This was a great tour and well worth the money! Lucia was an excellent tour guide. She led us through the throngs of people to the key sites in both museums and offered extra information where applicable. There’s no way we would have been able to navigate the museums and see what we saw in the time we did by ourselves. The group size was perfect – 5 people. I highly recommend this tour. There is one area for improvement, though. It would be great if the groups could consist of people of around the same age and mobility ability.

Dacha was a super guide at the Musée D’Orsey. She knowledgeably reviewed The great impressionists and I came away Feeling educated and would recommend Dacha for your guide

We were on the Notre-Name, Paris Historical Walk, Lou e Museum Guide Tour. Our guide, Lucia, was friendly, knowledgeable, and a great tour guide. We would highly re ommend this tour. Particularly if you are fortunate enough to have Lucia as your tour guide.

This guided tour with Lucia was amazing! We learned, we laughed and we were amazed! Thank you Lucia!

We did the four hour tour. It was two hours in each museum with a lunch break in between. Our amazing guide was Lilyia. She combined the perfect amount of art, history and interesting facts. She was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. She was always interesting to listen to and moved the tour at a great pace. In four hours you get a great taste of two fabulous but potentially overwhelming museums. You will see the famous ladies like Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo during your tour. But you will leave the tour feeling like you have a greater understanding of how the art work integrated with the history of the times, how it was made and the messages they were trying to convey. Lunch was at a quick inexpensive lunch place. It was a great chance to get to know our guide and fellow travelers. Our tour had only 4 people and was worth every euro. GREAT WAY to experience these museums.

Nice walking tour of Montmartre, highlighting the history of the area, the life of impressionist artist Van Gogh who resided in this area (where we saw his apartment), and Picasso’s local hangout. After lunch, headed over to Museum D’Orsay, a former rail station back in its day where a large collection of impressionist paintings are housed and explained by tour guide. Overall a great day.

We had an incredible day visiting both the Louvre and D’Orsay museums. Our guide Tina was amazingly personable and knowledgeable. She navigated us through the museums stopping at each of the heighlights where she shared her incredible knowledge and passion for the piece, it’s artist, it’s history and its influence on the developing art community. Well done Babylon Tours!

I decided to book several tour with Babylon tours when my friends came to visit Paris and that was the best decision I have made. It was 3 of us and we were alone for every tour which we have booked!

Our first tour was Combo Museum tour: Louvre and Museum of Orsay. You may think that 5 hours could be long however time flied so quickly with our lovely guide Tina with us. With her beautiful storytelling, she gave us amazing insights in history of art skilfully connecting both museums in one big art story. She was also very personable, witty and eloquent making our tour an unforgettable experience.  Our second tour was Pere Lachaise Cemetery and amazing Tina was again with us, leading us through this magical place and sharing some of the most unusual stories with us.  Later on we have done Paris walk tour where we have visited Notre Dame Cathedral and Ile de la Cite with our amazing guide Lilya who proved to be an expert in history and art. She had tonnes of information and was able to answer every question we had.

Overall I would highly recommend Babylon Tours to anyone who wants to have personable tour from which one can learn a lot!

Brian Dennehy Claimed to Have Served a Five-Year Tour in Vietnam - He Never Did

B rian Dennehy gained famed for his memorable performances in films like First Blood (1982), F/X (1986) and Romeo + Juliet (1996), among others. Outside of his acting career, he served in the US Marine Corps, from 1958-63.

Dennehy sparked controversy and faced backlash for falsely claiming to have served in the Vietnam War. His repeated assertions were particularly upsetting to those who'd actually endured the hardships and sacrifices of the conflict.

Instances of people falsifying or overstating their military service, often called stolen valor, are not unusual. The motivations for this range from seeking financial benefits from government entities and the public to wanting the recognition granted to true war heroes who directly confronted the enemy.

Online platforms have made obtaining medals and uniforms easier, and social media provides a space for people to create any persona they wish. Even before the internet, fabricating military service was relatively easy due to the difficulty in verifying such claims. After all, who would lie about being a war veteran?

While it may seem unlikely for a celebrity to engage in such deceit, history has shown otherwise.

Dennehy got his start in Hollywood in 1977, featuring in two films and three television series. His breakthrough came with the inaugural Rambo film, First Blood , where he played Sheriff Will Teasle. This role marked one of his most memorable performances, leading to numerous opportunities in the following decades.

Dennehy earned the admiration of audiences worldwide, with his military service further enhancing his esteemed reputation.

Here is what we know about Dennehy's service in the Marine Corps. He enlisted on September 15, 1959, and was stationed for a time on Okinawa, where he played football. He left the military on June 4, 1963, just under four years later, before the Vietnam War had really begun to heat up.

Throughout his career, Dennehy claimed to have served in Vietnam. He told Playboy that he'd done a five-year tour during the war, during which he'd suffered minor injuries in combat. He appeared to go more in-depth when speaking with The New York Times , elaborating that the injuries he'd sustained were caused by shrapnel. He also claimed to have gotten a concussion.

He even acted like he knew the mindset of those who'd had to kill while serving, telling Playboy , "As for killing someone, anyone in combat would agree that it's pretty much accidental. It's not what you're thinking about. You spend a considerable amount of time just trying not to be in a combat situation. You're trying to avoid coming face-to-face with anything. So when something bad happens, it's usually accidental.

"But the implication in war movies is that war has this rational beginning, middle and end. And of course none of it does," he continued. "It's absolutely f*****g chaos. Apocalypse Now is the movie. Even more interesting is that it was made so soon after the war was over. It was and is the most sophisticated overview of the experience."

The truth is, Dennehy never served in Vietnam. In 1998, he issued a public apology after being called out by B.G. "Jug" Burkett, a real veteran dedicated to exposing cases of stolen valor . Dennehy told The Globe :

"I lied about serving in Vietnam and I'm sorry. I did not mean to take away from the actions and the sacrifices of the ones who did really serve there...I did steal valor. That was very wrong of me. There is no real excuse for that. I was a peace-time Marine, and I got out in 1963 without ever serving in Vietnam... I started the story that I had been in 'Nam, and I got stuck with it. Then I didn't know how to set the record straight."

As CBS News notes, the closest the actor ever got to "action" during the war was portraying Marine Sgt. Ned T. "Frozen Chosen" Coleman in the made-for-TV movie, A Rumor of War (1980).

Despite his admission, Dennehy began repeating the same falsehoods less than 10 years later. In 2007, he told a journalist at The Wall Street Journal that he'd served in Vietnam. As The Denver Post reports, it was more than clear he didn't feel that bad about stretching the truth of his service and wasn't truly sorry.

Apart from facing backlash from veterans and the families of servicemen who saw combat, Dennehy's professional career saw little impact following his confession of stolen valor. This could be attributed to a lack of complete understanding among the wider population on the gravity of his lies or to the common leniency towards such behavior  in the entertainment industry.

Each case of stolen valor deserves equal scrutiny, no matter the status of the person involved. Such claims diminish the true bravery of veterans who courageously served and sacrificed for our freedoms, and deserve recognition and thanks, regardless of their deployment in Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, or any other conflict.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

brian babylon tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

brian babylon tour

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

brian babylon tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

brian babylon tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

brian babylon tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

brian babylon tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

brian babylon tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Luke Bryan on How He's Changing His New Tour to Keep Things Fresh (Exclusive)

Luke Bryan at CMA Fest

Luke Bryan is committed to keeping his consecutive Mind of a Country Boy Tour and Farm Tour fresh for his fans.

Luke Bryan  says he will never let his tours get stale!

Talking with ET's Rachel Smith from CMA Fest in Nashville, Tennessee, over the weekend, the 47-year-old "Love You, Miss You, Mean It" singer said he prioritizes shaking up his shows so that concertgoers aren't getting the same performance they've seen before. As someone who has been performing on tours for years, Bryan knows it's important to put a new spin on the songs fans want to hear.

"We had songs that we did... last year," Bryan shared. "And then we rehearsed them this week for the new tour."

He added, "We have to be careful and not revert back to 2023. That's old news. I mean, this is my year."

For the country singer who has gone out on seven major tours throughout his career, constantly evolving and giving his fans something new is his number one priority. The singer is currently on his Mind of a Country Boy tour and is planning a sudden jump to the Farm Tour in September . His last performance on the former tour is Sept. 14 in Florida and he begins the ladder performances less than a week later in Virginia.

"I like to stay ready," he shared. "I wanna just be like, you call, I'm there. I'm like, you know, Superman in the phone booth."

It's a small price to pay for Bryan, who says he does everything for his fans. Talking with ET, he recalled some of his early years attending CMA Fest and standing outside in the hot sun to sign autographs for as many as eight hours. While looking back on his early career, he said that is one part he does not miss.

Bryan joked that while he loves his fans, if he could have an artificial intelligence [AI] version of him do the grunt work, he absolutely would.

"I let everybody else do stuff for me. I try not to interact with people generally," he joked. "This is actually the AI form of me. The other Luke is, you know, getting his feet rubbed on his tour bus."

Of course, Bryan was joking as he has repeatedly talked about his love for his fans and performing, including at CMA Fest.

Luckily for the country music legend, the performance in Tennessee went worlds better than his April show in Vancouver, Canada, when he slipped onstage after stepping on what appeared to be a fan's phone on the stage, coming down hard on his back.

Bryan hilariously picked himself back up after the now-viral moment and asked the audience, "Did anybody get that?" Being a good sport, he tossed the phone back into the crowd, jokingly adding, "My lawyer will be calling."

He later spoke with ET backstage from American Idol  and shared that while it was speculated that a phone caused his fall, he thinks the cause was actually something else entirely.

"Everybody is reporting [about the] cellphone, but I was kind of hamming that up," Bryan said at the time. "I don't think it was a cell phone. I think it was just slick."

Bryan was one of numerous major artists to take the stage during the CMA Fest at Nashville's iconic  Ole Red  venue for the Spotify House pop-up. The country music event was co-hosted by ET's own Cassie DiLaura and singer Lily Rose, and welcomed artists like   Shaboozey ,  Tanner Adell ,  Dasha ,  Lady A ,  Little Big Town ,  Tyler Hubbard ,  Brian Kelley  and more.

CMA Fest hosted by Jelly Roll and Ashley McBryde airs June 25 on ABC.

Such a great private tour, saved so much time and saw everything we wanted in 3 hours!

Josephine is an amazing tour guide. Remember when you were in school and you had that class that you could not wait to get to because the teacher was so good. A teacher that made the subject matter come alive for you. That is what it is like to have a private tour with Josephine. We learned so much on our tour. We actually had a large group tour a few days earlier and the experience was a night and day difference!

We were lucky enough to have a private tour guided by Carolina. She was so extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the museum and the art. We learned so much about the Louvre and the many schools of art represented there. I can't say enough good thing about Carolina and the entire tour! It was a wonderful visit! Merci Beaucoup!!

This was the perfect way to see the Lourve. She was very knowledgeable and brought us to the 'must see' works. We then stayed a while on our own to wander.

Our guide was fantastic. Highly knowledgeable about art history, and made the tour super fun and engaging.

Our guide Alexander was AWESOME! We would recommend this tour for all those wanting to really familiarize themselves with the Louvre. This was not our first visit nor will it be the last however, it was the most informative and fun! Dr. Piedad Kaye

Great Experience. Worth the Money to see the highlights in a short time. Wish we could see more. Highly recommend. Our guide was a American History teacher and was awesome

Excellent - very knowledgeable

First day in Paris, spent it at the Louvre. It is so packed inside. My tour guide Belen did an outstanding job hitting all the important artworks I may have missed if I toured the museum without a guide.

The Louvre-wow!!! Just amazing. We had a 2.5 hour private guided tour and our guire was outstanding. With only 2.5 hours though there is so much left to see. She was great at showign everything that is really important, however we went back later in the afternoon around 5:00 PM and stayed until they closed at 9:30 PM they are open late on Wednesdays and Fridays we were able to take our time and there were very few people there during this visit.

We met our guide Athina at the Louvre. She was prompt and got us in to the Louvre with our skip-the-line tickets and proceeded to give us a very thorough tour of the Louvre in the 2 1/2 hours that we had with her. She was not only a bundle of energy, but was knowledgeable and friendly. If you can arrange to get her for a tour, I would highly recommend her. Simply a delightful person and very, very smart and knew her stuff about all periods of art.

Amazing! I highly recommend a private tour - there is just so much to see and it was nice to hit all the top must see. Our tour guide was absolutely phenomenal I truly wish I could remember her name. I felt like I asked some crazy questions and she answered them all! She was so educated and I learned a ton from her. You absolutely cannot go wrong with this tour! Have fun!

Amazing experience to have a private tour. Our guide Belen was very informative and enhanced our tour greatly. Well worth the extra money.

One of the most knowledgeable, witty, and personable guides we have ever had on a museum tour!

We had a private tour with an art historian, Bellen. She was great - very informative! Saw more of the Louvre than we would have otherwise. She taught us a lot!

Having a private tour of the Louvre, particularly in the late afternoon, couldn't have been better. We were able to view important works of art with an excellent guide. Our understanding of the significance of these paintings and sculpture, made the Louvre more enjoyable and approachable. This was preferable than wandering through a gigantic museum with headphones or a guidebook. The shorter time frame was easier on older, tired feet. We went straight to dinner and discussed all that we learned in the museum. Europe can be so daunting, and one cannot cram 2,000 years of history and culture into one vacation. It is better to leave wanting more, rather than making every day a cultural cram session.

Fabrizia was wonderful and very knowledgeable. Was great tour...

Great tour with the guide having a wealth of knowledge about the paintings, artifacts and the history from which the paintings belonged. Highly recommend the tour if you do not want to roam the museum without knowledge and history and where to go and see the highlights. A lot to cover in a short time.

My husband and I had a 2 to 3 hour private tour of the Louvre with Lucia on 4/17/2017. She was spectacular! She was very knowledgeable about the history of the Louvre and she answered all of our questions. She went at our pace, not rushed, but not too slow either. We hit all of the highlights and she suggested a few things, based on what she could tell we were interested in. I highly recommend the skip the line tour, and I would make a special request for Lucia, she was great!

We've been to the Louvre several times even took a tour in the past, but this private tour was the best experience, by far. Our guide, Paulo, was amazing! He curated our tour perfectly. He gave us a very unique insider's perspective highlighting not only the mind-boggling art history but also focusing on the Louvre's complicated provenance and evolution over time. He pointed out so many additional awesome sights that were missed on our prior visits. This tour was well worth the investment. I would highly recommend it to everyone! Additionally, it should be noted that my husband is wheelchair-bound. Paulo's knowledge and navigation of handicapped access routes was seamless and essential to making this a fabulous experience.

We did a private tour with Bellen (sp?) of the Louvre. The tour was incredible and Bellen really gave us the framework for viewing art. We learned so much on the tour and the time flew by because we were so engrossed in the tour. I highly recommend booking a tour with Bellen.

We had a fabulous 2-1/2 hour tour of the Louvre with Christina (not sure if I'm spelling it right). She fully engaged my elderly parents as well as my teenage daughter. She was amazing -- so knowledgeable and so interesting. She did a great job of navigating the crowds and moving us along. I didn't want it to end!

Lucia was very knowledgeable about the art and the museum. We got lots of insider knowledge about the art and the facility - highly recommended

This was an incredible tour, and without a doubt exceeded our expectations. Our guide, Belen, was exceptional. She was of course very personable, polite, and thoughtful: she told us numerous times that we should tell her if she needs to speed up or slow down, to ask questions, etc. The amazing thing about her was how engaging she made the overall experience. She was clearly very passionate about the history of the city, and very very knowledgeable in topics ranging from history to architecture to art, religion and even Egyptology. Belen translated this passion into an engaging conversation with us, which made the whole tour feel like a true learning experience as opposed to simply memorize these dates and names because this is important per academia or popular for various reasons. The fact that she was quite funny also helped convey many of her points and material. This was a dense tour with lots of information, quite a bit of walking around Paris but not overwhelming, and inside the Louvre. Belen asked us about whether we wished to opt for a slower or more intense/fast pace to cover more ground. She suggested a few places to grab lunch, and offered some good advice about art galleries which we were after. We would highly encourage anyone to take this tour for an immersive and invaluable orientation, not only for first-time Paris visitors.

Our guide, Lucia, was outstanding. I am a college professor in America and found that Lucia's knowledge was illuminating and demonstrated a solid foundation of factual information. Her enthusiasm was especially inspiring, and her ability to engage in thought-provoking discussion was a highlight of the tour. From a practical perspective, her command of the English language was nearly flawless. As a result, we would recommend Lucia without hesitation to individuals that are genuinely enthusiastic about expanding their understanding of art and history. Thanks so much for a highly positive and memorable experience. We would happily hire Lucia for future tours.

This tour was amazing!

This was a private family tour (2 adults / 2 children). Our tour guide Claudia was superb! Friendly, informative and great with our children aged 9, 10 yrs old. Highly recommend her private Louvre tour. It is a massive museum and you can really get so much more out of your visit with a friendly and knowledgeable guide!

Guide was good. We saw the main exhibits and went at a good pace

Carolina was a great guide through The Louvre. She guided us to all of the main pieces and provided an historical overview of the building and the art. One can tell that she really enjoys the museum, which made our experience so exceptional. Tom with Babylon was also outstanding. The museum was closed temporarily due to the recent flooding, and he kept in contact with us to provide updates and offers to reschedule. We were fortunate that the museum re-opened just in time for us to visit. Will book through Babylon again when we return.

Perfect tour, thank you Heidi! Can't say enough good things about this tour and our guide. So glad we chose to do this, it's the perfect way to learn a little more about the city and absolutely the best way to see the Louvre. I visited the Louvre once before, many years ago and was completely overwhelmed. Heidi gave us the perfect introduction and made sure we saw all the highlights.

A!! our tour guide was so passionate and with so much knowledge that make this tour one of the best experience in Paris... and skipping the lines was a biiig plus!

Amanda was an excellent guide. We hit the highlights of the Louvre. Would highly recommend.

Lilly was our tour guide. What a spectacular guide she was!! Her deep knowledge of art and art history were awesome and there is no way anyone should ever go to the Louvre without the assistance of this type of guide. She makes me want to go back to college to study art history! I've visited the Louvre in the past - looked at the famous paintings and sculptures - and moved on. This time - I wanted to spend a week there, but only if I had someone who knew something about the back stories of the art explaining things to me. This is well worth the money (actually worth more than they are charging). Very satisfied!

Anthonette B

We enjoyed our tour and our guide, Lilia. We would never have had the exceptional experience without this tour. There are so many things to see and learn about. Definitely recommend a private tour.

Awesome tour with wonderful guide who took us through the different civilizations and art.

We had a great tour with Tina, a young, fun and funny young lady. She was able to break down the vastness of the Louvre and hit the highlights and other aspects of the museum. She was very well informed and prepared and created an informal feel to our private tour. Highly recommend private tour for this museum.

I really enjoyed this tour. Guide Josephine was terrific! Very knowledgeable. Was able to see more than expected and she explained what I was seeing. I was glad I did this tour.

Was awesome guide was excellent had a great intro for my daughter for my daughter

ELEFTHERIOS T

VERY NICE TOUR WITH MUCH TO LEARN WITHOUT BEING IN A HURRY.

Fantastisk fin guide: Lilian, men vanskelig ? finne ut av eksakt treffested! Veldig bra at guiden ringte oss og vi traff hverandre til slutt :-. Selve omvisningen var fantastisk fin!

The Louvre is both amazing and overwhelming. Having a PERSONAL tour guide to help you progress through this magnificent museum is entirely worthwhile. Our guide provided us with nearly three hours of uninterrupted attention, and customized our visit to match our interests. I highly recommend this tour!

Great tour. Our guide was amazing!! Her knowledge was incredible.

Damien Chazelle is obsessed with the punishing pursuit of perfection. Whether it's finding an immaculate tempo, hurtling into space, or making it big in Hollywood, his films feature characters who are willing to endure physical and emotional torture to reach the finish line. If " La La Land " was his wide-eyed, sentimental look at the movie machine, "Babylon" feels like a very intentional counter to the criticisms of that film. It's a lavish 1920s-period piece about how often the silver screen images that feel like magic are really the product of incredibly hard work, broken dreams, and a lot of luck. Multiple sequences in "Babylon" detail how much work goes into two seconds of film, whether it's a field of dozens of extras sitting around while a camera is obtained or the difficult perfection needed when recording sound. Those two excellent scenes remind us that none of this is easy, even if it all looks so much fun.

Is it all worth it? That's the tough question. Chazelle gives lip service to the idea that this version of landing on the moon is worth the trip, but he drags his characters and the viewers through so much misanthropy to get there that it's hard to believe him. "Babylon" is a film of stunning parts—both individual scenes, performances, and tech elements—but it feels like the magic touch that Chazelle needed to pull them together in an honest way eludes him. There's something to be said about a film being so robustly unapologetic, but I felt as manipulated and deluded as the outsiders in this film who are eaten up by the Hollywood machine by the time it was over. One might argue that's intentional—a "feel bad" Hollywood movie is rare—but it's the difference between pulling back a curtain and simply rubbing your face in elephant shit.

And that's how "Babylon" opens, introducing us to Manny Torres ( Diego Calva ), a Mexican American in the city of angels at the end of the silent film era. He's trying to get an elephant to an insane Hollywood party, the kind of drug- and sex-fueled affair that was only whispered about in the gossip rags of the time. Chazelle uses the orgiastic bacchanal to introduce his players, including an aspiring actress perfectly named Nellie LaRoy ( Margot Robbie ), who catches Manny's eye just as her star is about to rise. We also meet the suave Jack Conrad ( Brad Pitt ), a silent film star about to leave his third wife and be struck by the fickle finger of fame as talkies come into the picture and the wheel turns to a new era of stars. There's a jazz trumpet player named Sidney ( Jovan Adepo ) and the underwritten role of a cabaret singer named Lady Fay Zhu ( Li Jun Li ). Gossip journalist Elinor St. John ( Jean Smart ) writes about it all while recognizable faces like Lukas Haas , Olivia Wilde , Spike Jonze , Jeff Garlin , and even Flea flirt on the edges of the story.

It's an undeniably ace ensemble, led by another fearless turn from Robbie and a star-making one from Calva, but Pitt is the stand-out, conveying a sense of lost glory that sometimes feels almost personal. Pitt has been a star for over 30 years—he's seen legends like Jack Conrad come and go, and he imbues his performance with a relatable melancholy that gives the entire film depth that it could have used in a few more places.

Chazelle's ambitious tapestry approach focuses on the ascending arcs of the outsiders—Manny, Sidney, and Nellie don't understand they're part of a system that values them about as much as it does the equipment it needs to shoot the films (maybe less). Even the star Jack Conrad will discover how disposable legends can be. All of them become power players in their own way—Nellie holds the screen in a way that few actresses other than Robbie could convey convincingly; Sidney's musical talent ascends as sound takes over the silents; Manny is clearly one of the smarter people on a set, and that grants him an increasing number of decisions. There's an underdeveloped love story between Manny and Nellie, but this film is more about the love of movies and Hollywood history than romance. It is also loaded with an overwhelming blend of historical detail and urban legends. Chazelle clearly did his homework.

And, once again, it feels like the filmmaker's commitment elevated his team of craftspeople. Linus Sandgren's fluid cinematography gives the film a lot of its momentum—his shots are rarely flashy but always propulsive. Justin Hurwitz's score might be the best of the year, finding recurring themes for its characters that gives the entire piece more of a sense of opera—a connection that fits this story's dark tone and tragic endings. The production design straddles that line between feeling genuine and also larger than life at the same time. The intercutting of the stories sometimes feels like it gets away from the excellent editor Tom Cross , but that's more a product of Chazelle's occasionally unfocused script than anything in the editing room.

About that script. "Babylon" is a test of whether or not a film can be the sum of its gorgeous pieces. A great score, a talented ensemble, and expert cinematography—all are undeniable here. And yet there are narrative elements of "Babylon" that feel hollow from the very beginning and only get more so as Chazelle tries to inject some manipulative lessons into the final scenes. A film like "Babylon" can be aggressively bitter and contemptuous, but I found it hypocritical when it tries to play the "isn't it all worth it" card that everyone knows is coming in the final scenes. Fans of this film seem to be adoring this finale, but it struck me as the falsest material in Chazelle's career.

There's a sense that Chazelle is suggesting that we don't get " Singin' in the Rain " if lives aren't destroyed during the transition from silent to talkies, and isn't it great that we got that movie ? That's a deeply cynical and superficial way to look at filmmaking. If he thinks he's pulling back the curtain on a broken industry, he reveals himself to be a part of that warped system in the end. It's like he doesn't want to seriously consider how his beloved art will destroy its dreamers as long as his raging party keeps going.

Available only in theaters on December 23rd.
