It seems that family road trips are making a comeback, especially for people who are interested in seeing the country from the ground instead of the air.  

We all have the advantage of knowing how kids can start to feel antsy during road trips because we have experienced it ourselves as children.  

Having a list of things to do during road trips is helpful for the entire family.  The miles go by much more quickly for a child who is busy and parents have the joy of happily entertained children.

With all the things you already have on your to do list for going on trips (which includes packing for pretty much everyone!), we thought you would appreciate some assistance with the in-car entertainment!

These games do not have to be complicated at all. 

For most of them, you only need your imagination and the optional piece of paper, so there is no worry about overpacking the car with a ton of activity related paraphernalia.

Keep this list at the ready for that time (probably within the first hour of your trip) that you hear the words dreaded by most parents….”I’m bored!”  or, my personal favorite, “Are we there yet?”

You will be able to quickly change the vibe in the car by introducing any of the fun road trip games we have listed below.  Best of all, you might all have a ton of fun and be at your destination before you know it!

1. Play Road Trip Bingo

I remember looking at road signs a lot when I was on a long road trip as a child.  Younger kids would love playing road trip bingo to make the miles go by faster.

3. See Who Can Find More Of Each Color Car

This next option is a road trip classic!  It is a great game especially for kids who are getting more familiar with colors.   

Everyone looks to see how many cars of each color they are able to find along the way.

To help keep track of the cars, we have this cute  car color find printable  to help keep track of everything.  

You could also include bonus points for unusual colors, interesting designs or trucks with different store logos on them!

4. Spot Items Of The Alphabet

Starting with the letter A, spot items on your trip that start with corresponding letters.  This is definitely a game that can include the entire family. 

 If you have little ones, it may be better to take turns and help them so they do not get lost in the shuffle of competition.  

5. Ask Each Other Fun Questions

Road trips are great ways to get to know each other even better than you already do!  Asking each other different questions can really give you a new insight into each member of your family.

The sky is really the limit with what types of questions you can ask.  Sometimes the easiest way to start on these questions is to ask some that make your kids laugh.  

A funny example of this would be  gross would you rather questions !  In addition to gaining instant interest, these questions will also get everyone laughing.

If your road trip happens to be during the summer, you can try out some great  summer would you rather questions  to celebrate the season of sun and fun!

Other questions that will get your kids chatting include  fun questions to ask kids  and the ever entertaining  this or that questions .  

You will definitely be surprised at the variety of answers you get as well as the priceless insight you may get into the personalities of the people in your family! 

The most important thing is to listen and take in the answers from your little ones!

6. Tell Funny Jokes

There is nothing better than hearing jokes from little kids!  It’s one of my favorite car activities.

If your joke bank is running low, we have you covered with  jokes for young children .

If you have kids that have outgrown their car seats and may have a more sophisticated sense of humor, we have also included  jokes for older kids .

Leave room for your kids to bring up jokes they have heard or even better, jokes they have made up by themselves!

7. Play Sevens

Each person in the car takes turns counting and anytime the number is a multiple of 7 that person has to say BUZZ or else they are out.

If you need to modify this game for younger kids, you can start with multiples of 2 and maybe work in teams so that an adult can help.

8.Play Cows And Graveyards

Each person in the car counts the number of cows they see, but when you see a graveyard, it cancels everyone’s cows. Designate one person to keep a tally of cows and graveyard losses.

The person with the most cows at the end wins.  

9. Play Hey Cow

If you spot a herd of cattle, one player rolls down their window and YELLS “Hey COW!!” as loudly as they can. You get one point if the cow looks at you.

10. Play I Went To The Market

The person who starts says “I went to the market and bought (something that starts with A- apple, maybe). The next person has to remember apple and add something with B.

This memory game will give everyone’s brain some needed exercise!

11. Play The License Plate Game

Who knew that you could use license plates to help teach your kids about United States geography?  That is precisely what this classic game is all about.  

Print off a map of the United States for each family member.  The maps will be used as score cards for everyone- kind of like a bingo card.

During the long car ride, each person keeps an eye on license plates of the cars on the road.  If the license plate is from the state you are in, it counts for zero points.

If the license plate is from a state touching the state you are in, it counts for one point.  Every state that touches a one point state is worth two points and so on.

When someone spots a license plate, they must call out the state to get the point for themselves.  This is a perfect way to help your kids learn about different states and their locations!

At the end of your long trip, you can tally the points on each score card to declare a winner!

12. Play Guess The Animal

This is one of the best games to keep everyone busy and learning at the same time.  

One person thinks of an animal and everyone takes turns asking only yes or no questions to figure out what animal that person chose.

For young kids, your best option is to keep answers and questions more simple to meet them where they are in their animal knowledge.  

However, the entire family will be surprised at how much your kids really know about animals!

13. Play Name That Person

Select a person in a passing car and make up their life story.  The story can be as silly and magical as you want.  

Make sure you give them a good backstory and a lot of side characters to follow the main character on their life story journey. 

14. Play The Strange And Unusual Game

Each time someone sees something strange or unusual, they get a point.  

15. Play The Counting Game

One person in the car starts with 1, then someone else (randomly without being signaled) says 2. If two people say it at the same time, you start back at one. The end goal is to get to 20.

You will be amazed at how much this will make everyone laugh!

16. Play Name The Song/Artist

Playing this game is such a good way to have your travel music playlist work double duty for you!  

It is also a one of the better road trip activities to take part in for those of us who experience motion sickness and have a challenge looking at things inside the car while it is moving.

There are a few variations of this game.  You can play the beginning of the song to see if people can guess it.  

You can also have someone say the lyrics to a song and everyone guesses.  

Make sure you have a kid safe playlist that has songs that kids of all ages can identify!

17. Play Triple Threat

Someone says three random nouns and the other people in the car have to tell a story about the three items.  

You could either have one person tell the tale, have each person tell a different story, or have everyone take turns and be involved in the same story.  

No matter what you choose, this game will score high in the creativity and fun category!

18. Have A Rock Paper Scissors Tournament

Among some of my favorite road trip games has to be rock paper scissors!  Make sure you go over the rules: rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper and paper beats rock.  

If there is a tie, the people who tied get to go against each other again until there is no tie.  The people who lose could wash the car windows on the next stop or help get snacks for the winners.  

The tournament could resume after each car stop.

19. Play Punch Buggy

Also called Slug Bug or Punch Bug, this game consists of looking for Volkswagen bug vehicles.  Make sure the kids are clear on what one looks like before you begin!

When someone spots a bug, he or she lightly punches the person next to them and says “Punch Buggy!”.   A variation of this can be to include the color of the bug vehicle that was spotted.  

You can designate a person to keep a tally of each family member’s finds.  Designate one point for a found bug and take away a point for each time punch buggy is called in error.

Go over the level of punch with your kids to start or you can change the rules to have them tap each other.  Sometimes the excitement of the game can lead to and overexcitement in the punch category!

That being said, keep the game light and fun and give each other kudos for their finds.  The only out of bounds area for this game is when passing by a Volkswagen dealership, or else mayhem may ensue!  

The winner can be declared the bug champion of the trip!

20. Play Mystery Phrase

It’s like telephone, but you spell the phrase out in a person’s hand.  To help ease the guessing a little bit, you could come up with themes, like summer items, animal names or shapes, for example.

This game is sure to get the laughter going in the car!

21. Play Fortunately, Unfortunately

This storytelling game will help you all create a story with tons of exciting ups and downs!  

The first person says something like:” Fortunately, I remembered to bring sunscreen”, and then the next person says something like “but unfortunately, it made my skin green!” and so forth while telling a silly story.

Every sentence starts alternately with Fortunately or Unfortunately, thereby changing the story for better or worse with each sentence.  Kids will enjoy the general silliness of this game!

22. Play Mad Libs

These road trip-themed Mad Libs are perfect for your next trip!

If you would like to reuse stories, depending on the length of the drive, you can put them in clear pocket folders and use erasable markers to fill in each blank.

23. Play I Spy

Each person starts their turn with the phrase “I spy with my little eye….”  and then they give some form of description about an item they happen to see out the window of the car.

For example, someone might say “I spy with my little eye something green” and then everyone else in the car starts guessing items outside that are green until someone guesses correctly.

24. Play The Quiet Game

For the times when things have gotten too loud and rambunctious (especially in the back seats!), this game will help chill things out, at least for a while!

As the name suggests, the point of the game is to stay quiet.  The last team or person to stay quiet the longest, wins the game.

While I can not guarantee that this game will last long, it will give at least a short break and most likely end in laughter!

25. Play The Category Game

One person chooses a category and a letter (for example, animals and the letter G).  Then each person takes turns naming items in this category that start with the chosen letter.

So for our example we would have gorillas, goats, giraffes, gerbils, etc.  The first person who can not think of a word for the category is out and gets to pick the next letter.

The remaining players continue to name items in the category, but now using the next letter that was chosen.  You continue to play the game this way until everyone but one person is out.

The winner gets to choose the next category and letter for the next game.

26. Play The Name Game

The first person in this game starts off with the name of their choice.  Then the next person has to figure out a name that starts with the last letter of the first name and so on.

For example: Adam, Mary, Yolanda, Aiden.  Anyone who can not think of a name or repeats a name already used is out.  The last person left at the end wins the game!

27. Play Two Truths and a Lie

One player tells everyone two things that are true and one thing that is a lie.  Everyone else has to guess which of these is the lie.

This can be quiet challenging since you are most likely traveling with people who know you pretty well!

28. Play Tic-Tac-Toe

For this simple game you can use a piece of paper and pass it back and forth.  If you want to do something a little different, you can find tic-tac-toe magnets and use a small cookie sheet to stick them to.

For a bonus, you can add other fun magnets with pictures of the alphabet that can encourage some independent play as well!

We sincerely hope that this list will help ease some of the pressures that can come with a long road trip.  

Time together with family can be wonderful, but it can also feel like a lot when you are all crammed in a small space for hours at a time!

While not every minute has to be life changing and amazing, it is good to have a plan to keep the kids (and adults!) busy and happy.  

Remember that it is also ok for the kids to do their own thing at times as well.  While it is nice to do things together, you also need a break every now and then and that is definitely ok!

Have fun and enjoy those sweet moments where you are all enjoying yourselves and laughing so hard that your eyes are watering!

There’s nothing quite like breezing down a highway with the windows down, the wind in your hair and a cooler full of sodas in the back seat. Whether you’re traveling alone or enjoying a road trip with friends or family, you’ll want to be sure that you’re covered with travel protections on your drive. This is as true whether you're embarking on a classic American road trip — like U.S. Route 66 — are or braving the roadways in a foreign country, in your own car or a rented vehicle.

Let’s take a look at road trip travel insurance, how it works and the best plans for auto travel insurance to suit your needs.

Road trips aren't immune to disruptions, and road trip insurance works similarly to travel insurance . Most plans require purchase before your trip begins and cover your prepaid expenses.

For rental cars

Not all third-party travel insurance policies automatically include coverage for a rental vehicle. Seek out plans that provide rental car insurance specifically — or book your car with a credit card that offers these specific protections .

Rental car travel insurance policies generally protect against damage to the rental vehicle only. Causes not within your control, such as collision, theft, vandalism, windstorm, fire, hail or flood damage are typically covered.

Because of the limited scope of rental car insurance, know that you may be on the hook if you’re liable for damage to other vehicles or if there’s bodily injury.

When picking up your rental car, you will likely be offered the insurance sold by the rental car company at the counter, typically called a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). You can decline this protection if you have sufficient coverage elsewhere (e.g., via a third-party policy or a credit card).

For your personal vehicle

Getting road trip insurance for your own vehicle isn't as common as travel insurance for rental cars , but it can still be a valuable consideration depending on your situation. For instance, access to roadside assistance can provide peace of mind if you are driving for long stretches in rural areas.

Finally, road tripping doesn’t end at driving a car. Other trip protections you may consider including in a travel insurance policy include medical evacuation, trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption coverage and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance . This is true whether you opt to drive your own vehicle or rent one for your trip.

With several travel insurance companies out there, it can be difficult to narrow down the one you really need. Before buying, always get quotes from multiple businesses.

This is because coverage levels and prices can vary dramatically. Insurance aggregators such as InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner) allow you to generate multiple quotes at once, plus they include filters for sorting so you can find the right policy for you.

Here are a few things to consider when looking for road trip insurance:

Our quotes were built using a hypothetical 37-year-old from California taking a road trip throughout the United States. The total trip time was 15 days, and the total trip cost was $2,700. Here were the top contenders.

IMG’s iTravelInsured Travel SE plan came out significantly cheaper than competitors’ plans at just $100.43. This includes primary rental car coverage and a whole host of trip protections.

$40,000 in rental car coverage — $5,000 more than similar plans.

$250,000 in primary emergency medical coverage . 

Pre-existing conditions covered. 

Rental car coverage is only for collision, theft or damage to the vehicle.

$40,000 rental car coverage maximum.

HTH Worldwide

HTH Worldwide is another top option for travel insurance for car trips. Coming in at $185.29, the TripProtector Preferred plan provides up to $35,000 for rental car coverage, as well as other unique coverage options.

Covers additional kennel fees for your pet if you’re delayed. 

Includes $500,000 in primary emergency medical coverage.

Offers up to $200 to reinstate frequent traveler rewards, which is handy if you booked hotels on points for your trip.

Max of $35,000 in rental car coverage.

Repatriation of remains covers just $25,000.

Coverage excludes trucks, campers, motor bikes, recreational vehicles and exotic vehicles (defined as antique, limited production or collectible car or any other private passenger vehicle with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price over $75,000).

USI Affinity Travel Insurance Services

USI Affinity’s Diamond plan rang in at $187, just a little more than HTH Worldwide’s plan. While it includes rental car insurance, the limit is quite low, making this a better option for those who are driving their own vehicles.

Travel delay starting at six hours.

$1 million limit for medical evacuation and repatriation. 

$50,000 limit for 24-hour AD&D. 

$1,000 rental car insurance maximum.

$100 deductible for rental car insurance. 

Maximum trip length of 30 days. 

AXA Assistance USA

AXA Assistance USA is our final recommendation due to its nonmedical evacuation policy, which will transport you to safety during a natural disaster or time of political or civil unrest. This can be especially important if you plan on driving somewhere remote with unknown weather conditions. The total for AXA’s Gold plan came in at $215.

Check out your own auto insurance policy. Within the U.S., your personal policy will usually also cover you when you drive a rental car.

Consider getting a travel credit card. Many travel credit cards include complimentary travel insurance as a benefit.

7. daylight – david kushner.

Perhaps a lesser-known song than the others, David Kushner’s “Daylight” has also dominated the internet with its calming ambiance and powerful vocals. The most recent release on this list (as it came out in April), it has secured Kushner his position in becoming a rising star, one that you should look out for as he grows even more prominent in the industry. Behind the lyrics, Kushner has stated that “Daylight” was inspired by the Bible, specifically that of Paul’s Epistles in the New Testament.

8. beautiful boy (darling boy) – john lennon.

Although “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)” was made public in 1981, there is a 2010 remastered version available across streaming platforms (like Spotify and Apple Music). With such a mesmerizing and soothing melody, it’s not a surprise that John Lennon wrote it as a sort of lullaby for his son, Sean. The boy is even named at the end of the recording as Lennon bids him good night. As a member of The Beatles, Lennon continued to prove his ability to stand alone as an influential and compelling lyricist through “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy).”

9. little talks – of monsters and men.

Of Monsters and Men released their song, “Little Talks,” in 2011 and received a generous reaction from both its American and European audiences. While the track already provides us with something worth listening to, its lyrics go deeper than you might think. Switching between two perspectives, “Little Talks” portrays two lovers being trapped in the same house they lived in after one of them has passed away. The feminine voice is talking to either her deceased soulmate or herself as she slowly loses her sanity (this is up to the listener’s interpretation). In contrast, the masculine voice responds to her from the other side of the afterlife or, perhaps, it’s not really there at all. Telling a tragic story, the song is beautifully and yet hauntingly written.

10. Life is a Highway – Rascal Flatts

Although “Life is a Highway” was originally recorded by Tom Cochrane in 1991, the Rascal Flatts made a cover of the song fifteen years later in 2006. As an exhilarating country rock track, this version is definitely worth the listen. Unfortunately, the group itself is no longer in production as it officially disbanded in 2021 but after nearly twenty years together, they made enough music for you to sing along to in the car for the rest of your drive.

One of our top tips for planning a family road trip is to arm yourself with an arsenal of fun and easy activities that can serve as entertainment while on the road.

Along with books, electronics, and our infamous road trip goody bags , our family loves to play good old’ fashioned word games while cruising the countryside.

The best word games to play in the car with kids have flexible playing rules and can be played by all ages.

Likewise, they are meant to be more of a time-filler versus an actual competition in order to keep things fun and lighthearted (which will keep the bickering at bay!).

If you are into keeping points, however, all of these word games to play in the car can be adapted to have a winner and loser.

1. The Alphabet Game

Start at the beginning and work through each letter of the alphabet.

Have kids take turns naming a word that starts with the respective letter. Keep going until someone can recite a word for each letter of the alphabet up until the end.

For older kids, consider selecting a category, i.e. food names, and have them take turns working through the alphabet until they get stumped.

Perhaps one of the most common words games to play in the car is the classic road trip game of I Spy.

Adding to its overall appeal is the fact that even when road tripping with toddlers , they can join in on the game!

This simple guessing game begins as one person spies (preferably something that will stay in sight and can be seen by all) something and keeps it a secret.

The other players take turns asking questions and guessing the object until someone guesses correctly.

• I spy with my little eye something that is pink.
• “Is it in the car?” ( yes /no?)
• “Is it soft?” ( yes /no?)
• “Is it mom’s shirt?” ( yes !)

3. Going On A Bear Hunt

Going On A Bear Hunt is another classic road trip word game that is known by many different names.

Regardless, it is a simple memory game where the first person starts by saying, “I’m going on a bear hunt, and I am bringing… [an item that begins with the letter A]”.

The second person repeats the sentence, repeats what the first person is bringing, and adds an object starting with the letter B.

This continues as everyone repeats all of the previous items before adding an item that begins with the next letter of the alphabet.

“I’m going on a bear hunt and I am bringing an a pple” “I’m going on a bear hunt and I am bringing an a pple and a b ike.” “I’m going on a bear hunt, and I am bringing an a pple, a b ike, and a c ookie.”

4. Categories

The Categories word game starts with a person selecting a particular category of items.

Each player must take turns naming items in that category until no one can think of any more items to add.

• Things to bring to the beach? (towel, sunscreen, shovel, etc.)
• Items found in a kitchen? (plates, oven, mixer, etc.)
• Names of candy bars? (Snickers, Milky Way, Butterfinger, etc.)

5. Heads-Up

One of our favorite word games to play in the car, Heads-Up is both a board game and a free mobile app on both Apple and Google Play .

One player holds up the mobile phone to their forehead without looking at it.

The other players will yell out clues for the first player to be able to guess the word that is showing on the screen.

The goal is to be able to guess as many words as possible in 2 minutes.

This game is a riot and your family is sure to love it!

6. Think Fast!

Someone picks a category or asks a question and the first person to shout out the answer wins.

The winner chooses the next category.

• Brands of cereal? “Frosted Flakes!”
• Names of country music singers? “Blake Shelton!”
• Colors of the rainbow? “Yellow!”

7. Word Trail

Word Trail is a word game played by naming and working off of compound words.

The first player starts by saying a compound word of their choice. The next player takes the last part of the word and builds a new one.

Keep playing until everyone is stumped.

8. Would You Rather?

Someone starts by asking a simple question of what someone would choose if given two options.

Feel free to get as creative and as personal as you want with the Would You Rather Questions !

When doing so, this word game often leads to good laughs and lively discussion as it is usually very surprising what each player says.

The person who answers gets to make up and ask the next scenario.

• Would you rather be an Olympic athlete or the President?
• Would you rather eat a raw potato or a whole lime?
• Would you rather be invisible or be able to fly?

9. Car Spotting

Everyone in the car tries to identify the make and model of the next car that is in the distance. This can either be the car that you are approaching from behind, or the car that is oncoming from the front.

Each person gets one guess.

Whoever correctly guesses the make and model wins.

10. Name That Tune

When it comes to traveling with kids , how about a little singing to help pass the time?

in the game ‘Name That Tune’, someone starts the game by humming a well-known song.

The first person to guess the tune correctly wins and gets to be the next “hummer”.

Name That Tune radio-style:

Try to be the first one to correctly guess the name of the song that comes on the radio.

Tweens and teens who love music can usually identify modern-day hits within a few beats of the song starting!

11. 20 Questions

20 Questions is the perfect word game to play in the car when you are needing to pass time!

Have someone start by thinking of an item and then telling the other players what category the object falls in to: an animal, vegetable, etc.

Each player takes turns asking yes or no questions up to a total of 20 Questions. Encourage players to ask questions that build on answers already given.

The winner is the one who correctly guesses the mystery object after asking their 20 questions.

• “Is the object bigger than a horse?” (yes/no?)
• “Is the object bigger than a baseball?” (yes/no?)
• “Does the object move?” (yes/no?)
• “Does the object move fast?” (yes/no?)

12. Celebrity Name Game

Designed for tweens, teens, and adults, Celebrity Name Game involves someone starting by naming a celebrity. This person can be a famous athlete, an actor, or a popular character, etc.

The next player needs to name a celebrity who’s first name starts with the first letter of the last name of the celebrity listed beforehand.

13. The License Plate Game

The goal of this road trip word game is to simply read license plates and identify plates from as many states (or countries) as possible.

Car spotting is the best!

Yes, we love that one too! Growing up, we lived along a highway and as kids, we’d playing Car Spotting from our living room window 🙂

Great ideas. We often play a car colour game to where you have to be the first to spot for instance 5 pink or gold cars (everyone has their own unusual colour).

It can also be fun to make a silly phrase out of the letters on a licence plate.

There is also a new App called Psych which my kids love. It has a range of trivia games and word games. In one of them you have to make up a word to fit a definition-battling against each other to fool the others that yours is the correct one. Even the adults are a bit addicted in our house.

U.S. gas prices are falling; demand at the pump is 'kind of shallow' despite summer travel

New driving habits, fuel-efficient cars, evs and crude oil prices are playing a part.

NEW YORK — Gas prices are once again on the decline across the U.S., bringing some relief to drivers now paying a little less to fill up their tanks.

The national average for gas prices on Monday stood around $3.44, according to AAA . That's down about 9 cents from a week ago — marking the largest one-week drop recorded by the motor club so far in 2024. Monday's average was also more than 19 cents less than it was a month ago and over 14 cents below the level seen this time last year.

Why the recent fall in prices at the pump? Industry analysts point to a blend of lackluster demand and strong supply — as well as relatively mild oil prices worldwide.

There are a few factors contributing to today's falling gas prices. For starters, fewer people may be hitting the road.

“Demand is just kind of shallow,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said, pointing to trends seen last year and potential lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Traditionally — pre-pandemic — after Memorial Day, demand would start to pick up in the summertime. And we just don’t see it anymore.”

Last week, data from the Energy Information Administration showed that U.S. gasoline demand slipped to about 8.94 billion barrels a day. That might still sound like a lot — but before the pandemic, consumption could reach closer to the 10 billion barrel-a-day range at this time of year, Gross noted.

Beyond pandemic-specific impacts, experts note that high gas prices seen following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and persistent inflation may have led many Americans to modify their driving habits. Other contributing factors could be the increased number of fuel-efficient cars, as well as electric vehicles , on the road today, Gross said.

Some of this is still seasonal. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, noted that gas prices typically ease in early summer because of refinery capacity. At this time of year, he said, many factors boosting prices in late winter and early spring — particularly refinery maintenance — are no longer present.

“Once refinery maintenance is done, output or utilization of the nation’s refineries goes up — and that contributes to rising supply,” De Haan said. And that stronger supply, paired with weaker consumption, has led to a “bit more noticeable" decline in prices this year. He added that U.S. refinery utilization is at some of its highest levels since the pandemic.

Separately, the Biden administration announced last month that it would be releasing 1 million gasoline barrels , or about 42 million gallons, from a Northeast reserve with an aim of lowering prices at the pump this summer. But De Haan noted that such action has little impact nationally — 42 million gallons equals less than three hours of U.S. daily gas consumption.

“Really, what we’re seeing right now with (declining) gasoline prices ... has been driven primarily by seasonal and predictable economics,” he said.

What about oil prices?

Experts also point to cooling oil costs. Prices at the pump are highly dependent on crude oil , which is the main ingredient in gasoline.

West Texas Intermediate crude, the U.S. benchmark, has stayed in the mid $70s a barrel over recent weeks — closing at under $78 a barrel Monday. That's “not a bad place for it to be,” Gross said, noting that the cost of crude typically needs to go above $80 to put more pressure on pump prices.

Oil prices can be volatile and hard to predict because they're subject to many global forces. That includes production cuts from OPEC and allied oil producing countries, which have previously contributed to rising energy prices .

OPEC+ recently announced plans to extend three different sets of cuts totaling 5.8 million barrels a day — but the alliance also put a timetable on restoring some production, “which is likely why the price of oil had somewhat of a bearish reaction,” De Haan said.

Could prices go back up?

The future is never promised. But, if there are no major unexpected interruptions, both Gross and De Haan say that prices could keep working their way down.

At this time of year, experts keep a particular eye out for hurricane risks — which can cause significant damage and lead refineries to power down.

“Prices move on fear,” Gross said. In the U.S., he added, concern particularly rises once a hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico — and even if it doesn't eventually make landfall, refineries may pull back on operations out of caution. Impacts can also range by region.

But barring the unexpected, analysts like De Haan expect the national average to stay in the range of $3.35 to $3.70 per gallon this summer. Gas prices typically drop even more in the fall, and it's possible that we could see the national average below $3 in late October or early November, he said.

What states have the lowest gas prices today?

While gas prices nationwide are collectively falling, some states always have cheaper averages than others, due to factors ranging from nearby refinery supply to local fuel requirements.

As of Monday, per AAA data, Mississippi had the lowest average gas price at about $2.94 per gallon — followed by $2.95 Oklahoma and just under $2.97 in Arkansas.

Meanwhile, California, Hawaii and Washington had the highest average prices on Monday — at about $4.93, $4.75 and $4.41 per gallon, respectively.

Change Your Name

The process to change your name on your passport varies depending on your situation. Expand the boxes below to find the process that applies to you.

Less than one year after BOTH my passport was issued and my name was legally changed

Submit the following by mail:

• Form DS-5504  (find mailing instructions on the form)
• Your most recent U.S. passport
• An original or certified document which shows that you changed your name less than one year after we issued your most recent U.S. passport. Examples include a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.
• One  passport photo

You will not have to submit any passport fees unless you want expedited service which costs an extra $60. 

More than one year after either my passport was issued or my name was legally changed

You may be eligible to renew your passport by mail using Form DS-82 or apply in person using Form DS-11.

Can I renew by mail?

You can renew by mail using  Form DS-82  if your most recent passport:

• Is submitted with your application
• Is undamaged (other than normal wear and tear )
• Was issued when you were age 16 or older
• Was issued within the last 15 years
• Was issued in your current name (or you can show your name change)

If you are eligible to renew, submit the following by mail:

• Your original or certified name change document, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order
• One color  passport photo
• Fees , which are different depending on your age
• Send Form DS-82 and supporting documents using USPS. UPS, FedEx, DHL, and other companies cannot deliver to the PO Box addresses listed on Form DS-82.

How do I apply in person if I cannot renew by mail?

If you are not eligible to renew your passport by mail using Form DS-82,  apply in person  and submit the following:

• Your evidence of U.S. citizenship and photocopy of that evidence
• Valid ID and photocopy of that ID
• Fees , which are different depending on your age

Please note : If your name has changed because you are married  and  you show us an ID issued in your new name, you do not need to submit proof of your name change. You must include the details of the marriage on the second page of Form DS-11.

Already using a different name but cannot show the change

If you cannot show the change with a court order, divorce decree, or marriage certificate, apply in person and submit:

• Your evidence of U.S. citizenship
• Valid ID issued in the name you are currently using and photocopy of that ID

What should I do if my name is different than what is on my citizenship evidence, or I cannot show my new name through marriage or on a court order?

You may need to fill out  Form DS-60: Affidavit Regarding a Change of Name  if:

• The name you are using is different than the name on your evidence of U.S. citizenship, or
• Your new name is not shown on a court order or through marriage.

This form must be completed by two people who have known you by both names. You must also submit three certified or original public records that show you have used the new name for five years or more.

Correct a Data or Printing Error

You can correct your passport if there is a data or printing error. A data error may include an issue with your name, gender, or place of birth. A printing error may include data is missing on the biographical page, discoloration, or crooked printing. We will correct the error at no charge if the passport is still valid.

The Sapphire Preferred Card is one of the best rewards credit cards with an annual fee under $100, with a generous welcome bonus offer of 75,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Beyond its rewards, the Sapphire Preferred Card comes with some of the best travel coverage available, including trip cancellation and interruption insurance and primary car rental insurance.

The Sapphire Preferred Card also includes a $50 annual credit for hotels booked through the Chase Travel℠ Portal, a 10% anniversary points bonus, and up to 5 points per dollar in popular spending categories.

You may find yourself interested in both the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Sapphire Reserve , but on the fence about paying a high annual fee. As long as your Sapphire Preferred Card is open and in good standing, your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points will not expire. However, if you close your card, you'll lose all the points in your account — so be sure to redeem them or transfer them to an airline or hotel partner before you cancel.

How to Earn Points With the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Sapphire Preferred Card members earn points at the following rates per dollar:

• 5 points on all travel purchased through Chase Travel℠
• 3 points on dining, including eligible delivery services, takeout, and dining out
• 3 points on select streaming services
• 3 points on online grocery purchases (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs)
• 2 points on all other eligible travel purchases

All other purchases earn one point per dollar. 

How to Use Chase Ultimate Rewards Points 

Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are worth 1 cent each by default when redeemed through the Chase Travel Portal. With the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you get 25% more value, or 1.25 cents per point.

Redeem Chase Points for Travel

You can redeem Ultimate Rewards points for flights, hotels, rental cars, and more through the Chase Travel Portal at the 1.25-cent rate with no limits or blackout dates. The redemption system searches many airline and hotel brands, with a similar feel and layout to major discount travel websites.

However, if you want to get even more value per point, you can transfer to Chase's airline and hotel transfer partners at a 1:1 ratio. That means 1 Chase point equals 1 point or mile in these programs:

You generally get the best value per point by transferring to airlines and booking premium travel, like a first-class flight or a hotel stay that would cost hundreds of dollars. Also, keep in mind that many transfer partner airlines are members of alliances that give you additional partner airline choices.

When you get a good deal, you can book a domestic round-trip flight for 25,000 points. With British Airways, for instance, you can book short-haul flights on partner American Airlines for even fewer points. Southwest also offers many great deals with no checked baggage fees for your first two bags.

If you earn the welcome bonus offer on the Sapphire Preferred Card, you'll have more than enough points for a round-trip award flight to Europe — and depending on the partner you redeem with, you could have points left over to jumpstart your next trip.

Redeem Chase Points for Other Purchases

There are plenty of non-travel options for redeeming your Chase points, but you won't necessarily get as much value as you would by transferring to partners:

• Cash back :  Cash in your points at a rate of 1 cent each toward a statement credit or direct deposit to your bank account
• Chase Pay Yourself Back : Use points toward eligible purchases at a rate of up to 1.25 cents apiece
• Gift cards:  Your points are worth 1 cent each toward gift cards from popular merchants 
• Apple, PayPal, and Amazon purchases: Use points directly for Apple (1 cent each), PayPal (0.8 cents each), or Amazon (0.8 cents each) purchases; the latter two options aren't a good value — you're better off paying for your purchase with the card, then redeeming points at 1 cent apiece toward a statement credit

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Benefits and Features

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card's benefits come in handy when traveling and shopping at home, online, or anywhere your travels take you.

When you're traveling outside the U.S., the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card does not charge any foreign transaction fees. Foreign transaction fees are typically 3% to 5% of your purchase, so they can quickly add up if you don't take the right card on your trips abroad.

Annual Hotel Credit

The Sapphire Preferred Card offers up to $50 in annual statement credits toward hotel purchases made through the Chase Travel Portal. New cardholders can start earning the credit immediately, while existing cardholders will be eligible after their next account anniversary.

Maximizing this credit is an easy way to shave up to $50 off the card's $95 annual fee — making your net out-of-pocket cost each year just $45.

10% Anniversary Point Bonus

Each year on your account anniversary, you'll receive a points bonus equal to 10% of all purchases made in the previous year.

For example, if you spent $25,000 on the card in an anniversary year, you'd receive a bonus of 2,500 points.

Primary Car Rental Insurance

The Sapphire Preferred Card card includes primary car rental insurance for damage due to theft or collision, which means it kicks in before your own car insurance and allows you to confidently pass up the extra charge of a car rental agency's own insurance whenever you rent a vehicle and pay with the Sapphire Preferred Card (note that it doesn't include liability insurance).

Most cars and countries are included, but check the terms and conditions for specific exclusions.

Trip Interruption/Cancellation Insurance

If you've paid for an eligible trip with the Sapphire Preferred Card and it's cut short or canceled for a covered reason like illness or severe weather, the card's travel insurance could reimburse you up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses.

Trip Delay Insurance

When you use your Sapphire Preferred Card to pay for your fare, its trip delay insurance can get you reimbursed up to $500 per ticket for hotel rooms, food, toiletries, clothes, or other reasonable expenses when your flight is delayed overnight or by 12 hours or more.

Baggage Delay Insurance

If you've paid for your travel with the Sapphire Preferred Card and your bags are delayed for six hours or more, you could be reimbursed for essential purchases (like clothing and toiletries) up to $100 per day for up to five days.

Lost Luggage Reimbursement

If the carrier damages or loses your bags, you and your immediate family members could be covered for up to $3,000 per passenger as long as you've paid for your tickets with the Sapphire Preferred Card.

Extended Warranty

The Sapphire Preferred Card extends the time period of a US manufacturer's warranty on eligible items by an additional year, on warranties of three years or less when you pay with your card.

Purchase Protection

If an eligible item you've bought with the Sapphire Preferred Card is damaged or stolen within 120 days of purchase, purchase protection could make you eligible for up to $500 in reimbursement per claim, and up to $50,000 per account.

Travel and Emergency Assistance Services

If you're traveling away from home and have a problem, you can get help with medical and legal referrals or other emergency assistance. This service is free for Sapphire Preferred Card cardholders, but any third-party costs are your responsibility.

Travel Accident Insurance

When you pay for your air, bus, cruise, or train transportation with the Sapphire Preferred Card, you're eligible for accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $500,000.

Roadside Dispatch

Sapphire Preferred Card cardholders can contact the roadside dispatch hotline for help with arranging services like towing and flat tire repair for a set fee.

DoorDash DashPass

With the Sapphire Preferred Card, you can receive a complimentary DashPass membership (for waived delivery fees on qualifying orders) through December 31, 2024. Enrollment is required to receive this perk. 

Instacart Benefits

Through July 31, 2024, Sapphire Preferred Card cardholders can enroll for a complimentary six months of Instacart+ membership, which comes with free delivery on orders of $35+ and reduced service fees. If you don't plan to keep the membership open beyond six months, be sure to set a calendar reminder to cancel, otherwise, it will automatically renew for another year (currently $99) once your free six months are up.

With the Sapphire Preferred Card, you can now also earn up to $15 per quarter in statement credits toward Instacart purchases (activation required). If you maximize this benefit each quarter, it's worth up to $60 per year — which makes up for much of the card's annual fee.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Fees

It is easy to see how you can get $100 or more in value from this card every year, but it isn't free. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card charges a $95 annual fee. However, you can use the card for international purchases without worrying about extra charges, because it doesn't add foreign transaction fees.

Like most other credit cards, you'll pay interest if you carry a balance (currently a 21.49% - 28.49% Variable APR), and there fee in other situations, including balance transfers, cash advances, late payments, and returned payments.

Compare the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Card

The Sapphire Preferred Card isn't the only credit card geared to travelers that offers top-notch benefits and generous rewards. Depending on your spending and travel habits, one of these alternative credit cards could be a better fit for you. 

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® , one of the best premium travel credit cards available, is the top-tier "sibling" of the Sapphire Preferred Card.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve has a $550 annual fee compared to a $95 annual fee on the Sapphire Preferred Card. 

The Chase Sapphire Reserve comes with up to a $300 annual travel credit and access to more than 1,500 airport lounges through its complimentary Priority Pass membership. Cardholders can also redeem Ultimate Rewards through the Chase portal at a value of 1.5 cents apiece, compared to the 1.25 cents apiece for Sapphire Preferred Card.

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders earn 10 points on Lyft rides through March 2025; 10 points on hotels and car rentals booked through Chase; 10 points on Chase Dining; 5 points on airfare through Chase travel; 3 points on other dining and travel; and earn 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

If you want a mid-tier travel credit card that earns American Express Membership rewards, the American Express® Gold Card is a good option for you to consider. Cardholders earn 4 points at U.S. supermarkets  and restaurants; 3 points on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel; and 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases.

New Amex Gold cardholders can earn 60,000 Membership Rewards® points after spending $6,000 on purchases on the card in the first six months of card membership, and can benefit from extra perks at Amex Hotel Collection properties when booked through Amex; secondary car rental insurance; trip delay insurance; baggage insurance; extended warranty; purchase protection; and up to $10 in Uber Cash each month, up to $120 per calendar year.

American Express® Gold Card cardholders who enroll in the benefit can can also get a $10 monthly dining credit at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Wine.com, Milk Bar, Goldbelly, and participating Shake Shack locations. This card has an annual fee of $250, which is significantly higher than that of the Sapphire Preferred Card but can be offset by all of the bonus credits if you're able to use them.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is nearly identical to the Sapphire Preferred Card, but for people who prefer Capital One as a credit card issuer. 

New cardholders can earn a welcome bonus of 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within three months from account opening. The card has an annual fee of $95, and earns a flat rate of 2 miles per dollar on most purchases. They will earn 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

Sapphire Preferred Card Frequently Asked Questions

To be eligible to apply for the Sapphire Preferred Card, you have a credit score in the good to excellent range. However, Chase only allows you to have one Sapphire card at a time, so if you already have the card (or its sibling, the Chase Sapphire Reserve®), you won't be approved.

The $95 is worth it for occasional and frequent travelers, even the annual fee might seem intimidating if you've only had no-annual-fee cards in the past. It's definitely worth it in the first year because the value of the welcome bonus far exceeds the cost.

The Sapphire Preferred Card earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points, which you can redeem for travel booked through Chase, statement credits, gift cards, and merchandise. The best way to use your rewards is usually by transferring them to Chase's airline and hotel partners, because you can often get outsized value from your points this way.

The Sapphire Preferred Card does not charge extra to add authorized users. Additional cardholders get their own card, but any points earned from their spending will belong to the primary cardholder. Keep in mind any transactions made by your authorized users are your responsibility, so only add folks you trust.

The minimum credit limit for the Sapphire Preferred Card is usually $5,000 because it's a Visa Signature card. Many people get approved for credit limits that are higher than that.

The difference between the Sapphire Preferred and Reserve is that the Sapphire Preferred Card is a mid-tier card with a $95 annual fee and generous rewards for spending. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a premium card meant for frequent travelers, and comes with upscale benefits and rewards in exchange for a $550 annual fee.

You can upgrade the Sapphire Preferred Card if you've had it for at least a year. Should you decide it's not a good fit, you can call Chase and ask to product change to a different personal Chase Ultimate Rewards earning card. For example, if you find yourself traveling more often and want perks like Priority Pass airport lounge access , you could ask for an upgrade to the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

You can downgrade the Sapphire Preferred Card if you've had it for at least a year. If you find that paying the Sapphire Preferred Card's annual fee isn't worth it for you, you could request a downgrade to the no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex℠ or Chase Freedom Unlimited®.
