La jolla historical society home tour to highlight ‘one of the birthplaces of modernism’.

The Modernism Home Tour will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, and feature a series of houses to be revealed the day of the event.

The tour offers guests “the opportunity to step inside these gorgeous private residences of really, really wonderful examples of Modernist architecture right here in The Village and the surrounding neighborhoods,” according to Historical Society Executive Director Lauren Lockhart.

Last year, when the Historical Society held its first Modernism Home Tour, the event sold out. Looking to make it an annual occurrence, volunteers set out to do more research on local Modernist houses.

“We discovered that La Jolla is actually one of the birthplaces of Modernism in the United States and maybe even the world,” said event chairwoman Joan Gand. “We were pretty excited to find that out, and a number of people were inspired by the first tour to say, ‘Hey, where did all this come from?’”

Local interest in Modernist architecture expanded in the early 1990s, “when people started rediscovering the styles of the ’50s and ’60s and realized we had something great there,” Gand said. “We had something that was actually … an American style of architecture and design. It wasn’t based on European castles and things like that. It was more based on log cabins with the post-and-beam construction, and Spanish Mission style was also an influence on it.

“And it all started here with Irving Gill, [who] was a very early Modernist. In 1909 … he built his first Modernist building here, which was way earlier than most parts of the country.”

Hallmarks of Modernist architecture, Gand said, include “the simplicity of it. It’s a form of architecture where they looked at all the previous architecture that we had and [thought] we really don’t need all this decoration and ornament if it doesn’t add to the function of the building. So it was also based on the function of the building and how it works and actually making it more low-maintenance, easier to take care of. … They found that by stripping down the architecture to simplicity, it was actually really wonderful to live in. It makes you feel good because there’s just no extraneous objects to catch your eye. … Often, they’re long and low rectangular designs.”

With Modernism’s surging popularity following World War II due to its cost-effectiveness and ability to use otherwise difficult lots, it had the added appeal of a connection to nature.

“Having the architecture feel thoroughly integrated into the landscape is a hallmark of Modernism, and it’s really well-illustrated in … this year’s tour,” Lockhart said.

The Historical Society intends not to repeat houses on the annual tours for as long as possible, she added.

The tour, inspired by another major Historical Society fundraiser, the Secret Garden Tour, will offer both a self-guided option and a Platinum Tour that includes lunch, bus transportation and an extra house to view. The self-guided tour will feature six houses; the Platinum Tour includes seven.

“The bonus house is located in a place where it could not normally be on the tour because there is zero parking,” Gand said. “But in this case, you can leave the driving to us and we’ll take you on the bus.

“A lot of the Modernism [architecture] here is kind of hidden down little streets, at the top of a hill or through very narrow roads, and we want to take you there, but we can’t always do it with just the typical tour.”

Volunteer opportunities are available for those who would like to be docents to guide guests at each of the houses.

CalHHS Secretary Dr. Ghaly to depart, CDSS Director Johnson appointed new Secretary

SACRAMENTO  – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the departure of California Health and Human Services (CalHHS) Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly, who has led the agency since March of 2019. The Governor appointed California Department of Social Services (CDSS) Director Kim Johnson to serve as the new CalHHS Secretary.

During Dr. Ghaly’s tenure, which spanned California’s nation-leading response to the COVID-19 pandemic, CalHHS pushed forward many initiatives that focus on providing more stability and opportunity to Californians. These initiatives crossed a wide range of health and human services issues, including addressing affordability and access of health care to deepening the connection between housing, homelessness and health, including behavioral health.

“Dr. Ghaly’s heroic service to the people of our state and his profound contribution to reshaping California’s health and social services cannot be overstated.

“For more than five years at the helm of CalHHS, his visionary and compassionate leadership and unwavering focus on protecting the most vulnerable among us has seen our state through unprecedented challenges and historic victories that improve the lives of Californians.

“He has been a driving force for transformative changes to make health care more affordable and accessible, and has overseen the state’s overhaul of our behavioral health system to better reach those most in need. His steadfast leadership of California’s nation-leading response to the pandemic saved countless lives and set the stage for our state’s strong recovery.

“I thank Dr. Ghaly for his tireless work to build a Healthy California for All, which will continue to make an impact in the lives of millions for decades to come.”

Dr. Ghaly will stay on at CalHHS through the end of the month to facilitate the leadership transition. The Governor today appointed Director Kim Johnson as the next CalHHS Secretary effective October 1. Director Johnson has led the California Department of Social Services since July of 2019.

Kim Johnson, of Sacramento, has been appointed Secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency. Johnson has served as Director of the California Department of Social Services since 2019 and served in several roles there from 2015 to 2019, including Deputy Director of the Family Engagement and Empowerment Division, Branch Chief of CalWORKs and Child Care, and Branch Chief of Refugee Programs and Child Care. She was Public Policy Director at the California Child Care Resource and Referral Network from 2012 to 2015. Johnson was Manager of the California Early Childhood Mentor Program at the City College of San Francisco from 2009 to 2012. She was Director of Program and Training at the Parent Services Project from 2007 to 2010 and Program Director at the Children’s Network of Solano County from 1999 to 2007. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $247,039. Johnson is a Democrat.

Liam Gallagher gets cranky, smug and rude with Oasis fans complaining about ticket prices

Oasis is back. And it’s the same old Oasis, as evidenced by singer Liam Gallagher, who went a few online rounds with fans Friday.

“OASIS are back your welcome and I hear there ATTITUDE STINKS good to know something’s never change,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter) after days of personality-free posts on his feed promoting the reunited group’s upcoming tour.

Fans jumped when they saw their guy had his hands on the wheel, and some wanted to discuss the drama that had marred their ticket-buying experience. Due to Beverly Hills-based Ticketmaster’s “dynamic pricing” policy, which increases prices when demand is high, fans were asked to pay “as much as £350 per ticket, around £200 more than had been advertised,” the BBC reported.

Translated to American, that’s about $465 per ducat or more than double the almost $175 promoted price. Three shows were added in response to the overwhelming demand — the band reunited after an unpleasant 15-year split that followed tumultuous years of togetherness — and those tickets were made available only to fans who had tried and failed in the original buying scrum.

In response to a fan who asked if Gallagher had any spare tickets, the singer pulled attitude, saying, “S— loads but there really expensive 100 thousand pounds Kneeling only.” He called one follower’s request for a free show “silly.”

“SMUG only kidding SMUG AS F— I told you all we were gonna get back together 1 fine day,” Gallagher told a fan who asked simply how the musician was feeling.

British rockers Noel and Liam Gallagher are reuniting as Oasis for a 2025 tour after they split up their Grammy-nominated band in 2009.

In its real-time response to last weekend’s Ticketmaster troubles, Oasis had a more measured approach, saying in a statement to the BBC, “While prior meetings between promoters, Ticketmaster and the band’s management resulted in a positive ticket sale strategy, which would be a fair experience for fans, including dynamic ticketing to help keep general ticket prices down as well as reduce touting, the execution of the plan failed to meet expectations.

“All parties involved did their utmost to deliver the best possible fan experience, but due to the unprecedented demand this became impossible to achieve.”

In a statement provided Tuesday to The Times, U.K. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy promised to “include issues around the transparency and use of dynamic pricing, including the technology around queuing systems which incentivise it” in parliament’s forthcoming consultation on consumer protections for ticket resales.

“After the incredible news of Oasis’ return, it’s depressing to see vastly inflated prices excluding ordinary fans from having a chance of enjoying their favourite band live,” Nandy said in her statement.

Justice Department sues Live Nation, Ticketmaster over their ‘stranglehold’ on concert ticket industry

The DOJ, California and other states sued concert behemoth Live Nation, the parent of Ticketmaster, alleging antitrust violations that could force the company to break up.

In the United States, Live Nation and Ticketmaster are under escalating antitrust scrutiny. In May, the Justice Department sued the company to break up the dominant concert promoter and ticket seller, accusing the combined firm of monopolistic practices.

Meanwhile, back in Europe, Oasis is inked to play 17 shows, traveling to Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin next summer, including five dates at Wembley Stadium. A longer, farther-reaching tour is expected but not yet locked in, with the band’s website stating, “Plans are underway for OASIS LIVE ’25 to go to other continents outside of Europe later next year.”

Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Welcome to Russia, where everything and anything is possible—especially riding on a tank, shooting an AK-47 and a bazooka, all while drinking vodka.

At Put-in tours, we have put together the ultimate excursion for men (and their girlfriends). Join us in our Soviet van for an entire afternoon of all-inclusive Russian fun on the battlefield!

Start by visiting Park Patriot, the impressive Russian army exhibition center and museum. There, try your driving skills at the T-80 tank official simulator ,  before you ride on two iconic Soviet armored vehicles (BMP-1 and/or BTR-80) on an off-road training path. Along the way, hone your skills while a drill sergeant shouts commands at you. You may not understand, but impress him anyway with your grenade launching technique and AK-47 assembling speed. Or suffer the consequences.

After that, take another shot of vodka , enjoy the army field lunch provided, and move on to the next activity…

Honey, I shot a bazooka!

Phase two brings a variety of iconic Russian war weapons to the tip of your trigger finger. Learn about and test the Makarov PM, PPSH-41, Kalashnikov AK-47, RPK, DP28 machine gun, several semi-auto or auto carbines and more… Firing off a bazooka is the grand finale, sure to leave you breathless—just before you send the photos to your mom.

To prevent you from inadvertently blowing up your best friend or transforming your girlfriend into a strainer, we only use non-lethal (but real!) ammo.

And because you’ll want to keep the good times rolling, we also offer a 10% discount on pub-crawl tickets.
