Swift Dzire [2015-2017] Price List in India (Variants)

Maruti swift dzire [2015-2017] car specifications, maruti suzuki swift dzire [2015-2017] summary, maruti suzuki swift dzire [2015-2017] price:, maruti suzuki swift dzire [2015-2017] variants:, maruti suzuki swift dzire [2015-2017] colours:, maruti suzuki swift dzire [2015-2017] competitors:, maruti swift dzire [2015-2017] car review.

It is Maruti Suzuki’s offering for its Swift Dzire fans who drive a lot of kilometres each month, but do so mostly in stop and go traffic. The Swift Dzire AMT also works for those who don’t exactly love driving but end up driving a lot anyway, and would rather have convenience and ease of driving over driving pleasure. Finally, the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire AMT is the second only affordable diesel automatic in the country; the first of course was the Tata Zest AMT.

What is it?

How is it on the inside.

The Dzire AMT is practical, reasonably spacious and because it is only available in the top of the line ZDI trim, it is also well equipped. Features first. It comes with keyless or push button start, gets a single zone digital climate control system, and has a decently well specced audio system with USB and AUX inputs and Bluetooth telephony.  It also gets steering mounted controls, a height adjustable driver’s seat and a trip computer that throws up info on average fuel economy and range. There’s also ABS, and driver and passenger airbags on the safety front. And to reduce parking woes, the Dzire AMT gets rear parking sensors as well.

What’s equally appealing about the Dzire’s cabin is its practicality and ergonomics. It comes with two cup holders upfront (the passenger side is a push-out type), bottle holders on all four doors, and there’s some storage in the centre console too. And, it has comfy seats and a couple of charging ports. But, when it comes to space, the Dzire AMT doesn’t do all that well. The elbow and legroom upfront is fine, but at the rear, shoulder room as well as headroom is tight. It also has one of the smallest boots, hatchbacks included.

How is it to drive?

As we said at the start of the review, one shouldn’t buy a Dzire AMT if it’s driving pleasure one seeks. Now the engine is the famed 1.3-litre Fiat Multijet unit. So, no problem there. It only makes 74bhp and 190Nm of torque under the Dzire’s hood. It is the automated manual transmission or AMT that the Dzire is mated to that takes some of the fun out of driving. The AMT, a 5-speed unit, is the same gearbox from the regular manual diesel Dzire. But, robots and hydraulic actuators handle the clutch operation and shift gears automatically. So all you get are two pedals – an accelerator and a brake.

Drive the Swift Dzire AMT in normal or D mode, and it feels fine at slow city speeds. There’s a bit of shift shock given AMTs can never shift as seamlessly as regular automatics, but it isn’t uncomfortable. The throttle response is well configured to give the car predictive acceleration and unless you floor the throttle, the Dzire AMT works perfectly fine, even when cruising calmly on the highway.

Floor it though, and the shift shocks turn more pronounced. The lack of swiftness (for the lack of a better word) in shift times – both up and down the gearbox – also gets in the way of spirited driving. One can always move the gear shifter to the left to engage Manual mode, but apart from better control over revs, it doesn’t really improve the driving experience much.

The ride quality of the Dzire is impressive, nonetheless. At slow speeds or high, the bump absorption, the stability, and the vibe-free and quiet nature of the suspension, is right up there with the best in class. As a result, the Dzire tackles road joints, potholes, and rumbler strips at city speeds, and undulations, surface changes and square-edged flyover joints on the highway at speeds, without bother. It makes for a surprisingly comfortable car.

Should I buy one?

As a car that costs Rs 10 lakh on the road in Mumbai, there’s very little to fault with the Dzire AMT. It has pleasant, well-built interiors; it has the prerequisite feature list; and even though it isn’t exactly spacious, it has a practical and comfortable cabin. It rides well too. But, what matters most is that it is affordable for a diesel automatic. And, it is extremely fuel efficient. Plus, because the Dzire AMT’s gearbox is essentially a manual ‘box, it will be more reliable and less expensive to maintain. So, yes, as we said at the start: If you are a Dzire fan who drives a lot in stop and go traffic, get one. Also buy the Dzire AMT if you don’t exactly love driving but end up driving a lot anyway.

Where does it fit in?

Given that the only other diesel automatic at this price point is the Tata Zest AMT, the Dzire really is in a class of two. So, if you must have a diesel auto and have around Rs 10 lakh to spare, you can either buy the Dzire, or the similarly priced and specced Zest. That’s it. No confusion.

Expert Review on Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire

Maruti suzuki swift dzire.

There are so many choices available, it may be challenging to select the motor vehicle that best meets your needs. There are, however, a few things to keep in mind if you are looking to purchase a new automobile. The car's ability to get good gas mileage is among the most significant considerations. When it comes to this statistic, not all automobiles are created equal; some automobiles are far more fuel-efficient than others. The variety of prices that the car can be purchased for is also an important consideration. You don't want to overspend on a car only to be stuck with a large monthly payment after you've already driven it off the lot. And finally, you need to ensure that the automobile is both comfy and functional for your needs. When looking for your next vehicle, you should give careful consideration to its dimensions, the configuration of its seating, and its ability for carrying baggage. If you are in the market for a new vehicle, you should give serious consideration to the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire. It was introduced as a subcompact sedan for the Indian market in order to offer a sedan-like car in a smaller size. Later, in order to get the tax benefits offered to cars with a length below 4 meters in India, it was converted into a sub-4-meter sedan. It is equipped with all of the features that you would be seeking for in a vehicle, and yet the price tag is still manageable for most people. So, here’s welcoming you to a new world of comfort, convenience and style with the new Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire.

How is the Design?

Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is a tiny car that was first introduced to the market in India in 2013 and then to the rest of the world in 2014. The Swift Dzire is constructed on the same chassis as the Suzuki Alto and is powered by a 1.3-liter inline-four engine that produces 109 horsepower and 112 Nm of torque. You can choose between a manual and an automatic transmission with it. Air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, power steering, and traction control are among the standard features of the Swift Dzire. The platform that it is based off of, the Nissan Sunny, also offers the car with good fuel efficiency; the Swift Dzire has an urban fuel economy of 18.7 km/l and a highway fuel economy of 26 km/l.

How does it perform?

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is a small automobile that is offered with an engine that has a capacity of 1.3 litres. It gets great mileage for the fuel it uses and is quite comfortable to drive. Because of its remarkable performance relative to its size, it is an ideal option for navigating the streets of a city. Because of the car's competent handling, travelling over extended periods of time is a breeze in this vehicle. Both the brakes and the ride quality of the vehicle are satisfactory. The only real drawback is that the exterior appearance lacks the flair of some of Maruti Suzuki's other offerings in the same line-up.

Torque Figures of Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire Car

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is a midsize sedan that competes with the likes of the Honda City, Hyundai Elantra, Ford Figo and Toyota Corolla. Offered in three variants - 1.2 L petrol, 1.5 L petrol and 1.6 L diesel - the Swift Dzire offers fuel efficiency and competitive performance. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

As for engines, the Swift Dzire is available in three variants: a 1.2L petrol engine producing 68 bhp @ 7500 rpm and 112 Nm of torque @ 4000 rpm; a 1.5L petrol engine producing 104 bhp @ 8000 rpm and 150 Nm of torque @ 5000 rpm; and a 1.6L diesel engine producing 90 bhp @ 6000 rpm and 236 Nm of torque @ 4000 rpm. All variants come with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, while the 1.6L diesel variant also comes with an optional 6-speed automatic transmission.

As for dimensions, the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire measures 4152 mm in length, 1881 mm in width and 1490 mm in height, making it one of the larger midsize sedans on offer today. It has been designed primarily for urban driving conditions, with decent payload capacity (680 litres) as well as decent fuel economy figures (14.8 km/l on the 1.6L diesel variant

Power of Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire Car

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire has always been a popular car on the Indian roads. It is efficient, economical, and fun to drive. This 2018 model is no different. The powertrain options available in this car make it one of the most powerful on the market.

There are three engines available in the Swift Dzire: a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 118 horsepower and 115 Nm of torque; a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 151 horsepower and 150 Nm of torque; and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 224 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque. All three engines are available in both manual and automatic transmissions.

The 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine is the most powerful engine available in the Swift Dzire, and it offers good fuel economy as well. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is also very powerful, but it may be too powerful for some drivers. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine offers excellent fuel economy and great power, making it a great choice for many drivers.

TOP SPEED of Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire Car

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is the quickest car in its class. It achieves a top speed of 177 kmph on the national highways. The engines available in the car are 1.4-litre turbocharged and 2.0-litre petrol engines. The 1.4-litre turbocharged engine produces 136 bhp while the 2.0-litre petrol engine produces 150 bhp.

How’s the Mileage?

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is a car that is good on gas mileage and is efficient in its use of fuel. The refinement of the engine does only offer performance but also, great fuel efficiency. The automatic gearbox on the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which the brand calls the AGS, is really good and delivers smooth shifting. The automaker claims that the vehicle achieves an impressive fuel economy of 54 kilometres per litre (kmpl) in the city and 65 kilometres per litre (kmpl) on the interstate. When compared to other vehicles in this price range, the fuel economy rating is exceptional. The Swift Dzire also provides a comfortable ride and a responsive handling experience. The quickness, cornering abilities, and ride quality of the vehicle have all been lauded as strengths. In general, it is a car that offers a lot of bang for the buck.

How’s the Driving Experience?

When it comes to its speed and acceleration, the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is a car that lives up to its name. Power and acceleration are quite satisfactory thanks to the 1.2-liter engine. When compared to other vehicles in this price range, the Swift Dzire provides a more responsive driving experience when the accelerator pedal is depressed. Your other motorists will concur with you that the Swift Dzire is a car that handles curves effectively and is comfortable to drive for extended periods of time. Because of its agile handling, you can even use it to navigate your way across a metropolis if you want to go that far. The ride might be uncomfortable at times, particularly when travelling over bad roads, which is a drawback. However, we think that the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire offers a good driving experience all around. This is our overall opinion.

What’s the Interior like?

The comfortable cabin of the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is one that exudes elegance and contemporaneity. The cabin feels airy, making travelling in the Dzire a delightful experience. With comfy seats and light-shade colours on the inside, the interiors of the Dzire look premium which give it an upmarket look. The interface is streamlined and up to date, and it features a sizable display panel right in the middle. The chairs are pleasant to sit in and provide adequate support for the back. You are able to alter the height of the headrests to suit your needs. The front door armrest with fabric gives you the comfort you deserve. There are storage compartments located on the sides of the automobile, and they are large enough to hold most of the stuff that you could require while you are travelling. SO, all we can say is The big boot on the Dzire directly ups the comfort in the cabin as no luggage needs to be carried in the seating area allowing the passengers to really enjoy the journey. The amazing low fuel waring lamp facility gives you the necessary alert when you are low in fuel. The brand new car also offers leather wrapped steering wheel, modern wood accent with natural gloss finish, dual-tone interiors, outside temperature display, urbane satin chrome accents on console, gear lever and steering wheel, Tachometer, front dome lamp, co. driver side sunvisor with vanity mirror and driver side sunvisor with ticket holder. In addition, the automobile is outfitted with an entertainment system that features a touchscreen display of 8 inches in diameter. Using this technology, not only can you manage the playback of music, but you can also adjust the settings for the air conditioning and even make phone calls. Last but not least, this vehicle comes equipped with parking sensors, which will speed up the process of finding a spot to park in.

Tech and Infotainment

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire comes with a lot of amazing features and latest interesting technologies that is available at our fingertips. Like, smartplay studio system, coloured multi-information display and steering-mounted control with cruise mode etc. It is a high-performance car that is created for individuals who seek both a stylish and powerful driving experience from their automobiles. It has a slick design that is guaranteed to turn heads, and it performs so effectively that it will make you feel like the king or queen of the road. Both of these things are sure to wow people. The vehicle is outfitted with a number of technological and informational features, such as a touchscreen display measuring 7 inches, air conditioning, heated seats, and other amenities. It also has a tracking facility which allows to keep a track of the vehicle at all times offering a complete peace of mind. All of which are designed to make your life easier while you are driving.

Safety Equipment

Airbags, seat belts, and head restraints are all part of the standard safety package that comes standard on the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire automobile. The vehicle is equipped with Electronic Stability Control, which works to reduce the likelihood of sliding and loss of control. In addition, the safety alerts keep your safety paramount and ensures that in case of any emergency the notification and GPS coordinates will be shared.

Which variant to buy?

If you are interested in purchasing a new Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, you have the option of purchasing either the Petrol or Diesel model. Both of these models are available. Here is a simple guide to help you decide which version to purchase based on your requirements:

The Petrol model is the more cost-effective choice if you are concerned about fuel economy. The Diesel version's fuel economy and acceleration are both improved by using this one instead. However, it does come with a few small drawbacks, the most notable of which being a decreased maximum speed and power output.

If you require increased power, the Diesel version is the one that you should go with. It comes equipped with more powerful engines, which result in improved performance as well as acceleration. However, it does come with a higher price tag and it is possible that it will not be as cost-effective as the gasoline version.

Which Cars Compete in this Segment?

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is a compact automobile that competes in the third-generation sector of the market for cars in India. It comes with three different engine options: a combustion engine with electric power steering that is 0.8 litres in capacity, a gasoline engine that is 1.5 litres in capacity, and a diesel engine that is 1.2 litres in capacity. The Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Elantra, and Nissan Micra are some of the other subcompact automobiles with which the Swift Dzire competes. Maruti Suzuki Dzire has been topping the list of best-selling compact sedans for many years. The Dzire heavily outnumbered all of its rival products in February 2021 with the product seeing the sale of 11,901 units.

Verdict (Value for Money?)

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is an excellent vehicle for individuals who commute frequently throughout the city. It gets decent mileage for the amount of fuel it uses and has decent handling. The vehicle comes standard with potent engines that make it simple to navigate congested urban areas. However are a few drawbacks to the automobile. For example, the interior does not offer a lot of space, and the gearbox's response time might be sluggish at times. However, when considered as a whole, the car is an excellent choice for urban commuters with a huge network at disposal for the servicing of Maruti cars.

Dzire Tour Key Highlights

Latest on maruti suzuki dzire tour.

Maruti’s sedan offering for the commercial segment comes in the form of the Dzire Tour. It is based on the last generation Dzire and is offered purely for fleet operators and cab owners who are looking for an alternate to the Hyundai Xcent Prime. The Dzire Tour S, S being for ‘sedan’, like other commercial models from Maruti (Tour H1, Tour H2 etc) is feature stripped and comes at an attractive price point. It even gets a factory fitted CNG kit for markets like Delhi. This version makes up for a good chunk of the total sales of Dzire in India and is preferred due to good comfort levels, a peppy and efficient motor and Maruti’s long term reliability factor. Other factors that work in its factor, at this price point, include a company fitted speed governor (80 km/h), power windows, central locking, keyless entry and availability in three colours of white, black and silver. Depending on the market it is sold in, the Dzire Tour S gets a choice of either a 1.2 litre petrol or a 1.3 litre diesel unit. The same engines power the current gen Dzire.

Maruti Swift Dzire Review

Ankit

Maruti Desire is the latest car launched by Maruti Suzuki India in March 2008. The 3 box version of Swift was launched to replace Maruti Esteem. Maruti Esteem was an upgraded model of Maruti 1000 launched in 1990, which was India’s first sedan. Maruti Esteem with a 1300 cc petrol engine was launched in 1994 and has served as a backbone to Maruti in the Sedan market. It has been introduced in the Indian market in both petrol and diesel versions to take up Tata Indigo, Mahindra Logan. Maruti Dzire has seen a very healthy order book and the company is finding it hard to meet customer demand.

Engine & Interiors

Swift Dzire has been designed by Maruti in India and is a 3 box version of its successful Swift. It has the same engine, power train, wheelbase and weighs 30-35 kgs more than swift. The entry-level is available in 6 models, 3 each in diesel and petrol variants. The petrol engine same as Swift is a 4 cylinder 1298 cc multipoint fuel injection engine with 16 valves and a 32-bit computer. The engine develops 87 bhp @ 6000 rpm with maximum torque of 113 Nm @4500rpm.

Maruti swift dzire interior

Features and Specifications

The ZDi and ZVi have additional features as steering mounted stereo controls, automatic weather control, adjustable tilting steering, alloy wheels, Dual front airbags, Antilock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and seat belt pre-tensioner with force The interiors are nice Lxi, VDi has sliver black fabric trim, VDi and VXi have bluish-grey whilst the ZXi and ZDi are beige fabric trims. Maruti Swift Dzire has a boot space of over 400 liters.

The boot is added to swift as an afterthought, the panel gaps are not smooth. The design of boots seems to be inspired by a much famous bangled look in the BMW 7 series. The side look is not so pleasing to the eyes. The 1.3 liter Diesel appears to be underpowered for highway driving. The positive point is excellent city driving and 18-20 km per liter consumption in diesel version. Both petrol and diesel have been received well but Maruti needs to speed up the production to meet demand.

This can be a great buy for those who want a mean between luxury and price.

15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in St. Petersburg, Russia

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023

Moscow might be Russia's most modern, cosmopolitan city, but St. Petersburg is the cultural and historical heart of the country . Home to the Hermitage, one of the largest and most stunning art museums in the world, surrounded by canals, and home to beautiful white nights (when the sun never sets in summer), St. Petersburg is regal and inspiring.

First-time visitors should start at the Hermitage Museum -a museum so large, it is literally impossible to see it all in one day -and the beautiful Nevsky Avenue, flanked by opulent restaurants, churches, and palaces, and a great place for people watching. The Peterhof Palace Complex requires a day trip out of town, but it's a must-see and one of the highlights of a trip to St. Petersburg.

Whether you already know what to do when visiting or are looking for more ideas on how to spend your time, take a look at our list of top tourist attractions in St. Petersburg.

State Hermitage Museum

Peter and paul fortress, palace square, peterhof palace, eliseyev emporium, vasilyevsky island, nevsky avenue, church of the savior on spilled blood, mariinsky theater, rivers and canals, cruiser aurora, saint isaac's cathedral, map of tourist attractions in st. petersburg, russia.

State Hermitage Museum

Founded when Empress Catherine the Great started acquiring works of art in the late 1700s, the museum didn't officially open to the public until 1852. Today, the Hermitage is the second-largest art museum in the world after the Louvre, and it's home to a collection of over three million items.

The Hermitage technically occupies six buildings, although the main part of the museum (and the building most people associate with the museum) is housed in the Winter Palace, which served as the home of the Russian emperors until 1917, and it's a massive structure with 1,500 rooms.

In addition to French Neoclassical and Impressionist art, Flemish Baroque and Italian Renaissance exhibits, the museum also holds an impressive collection of Russian art from the 11th to 19th centuries, a sizable 19th-century Egyptian antiquity collection, and a hall showcasing prehistoric art. The Hermitage has the largest collection of paintings in the world, spanning many countries and centuries.

The Peter and Paul Fortress

The Peter and Paul Fortress was originally a fortified area meant to protect the state from foreign attacks. It was constructed in 1703 and then extended and modified for the following four decades. While the fortress never saw any actual combat, it still has a dark story behind it, as it served as a prison and execution quarters during the Bolshevik revolution in the early 20 th century. Today, it's part of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg.

Within the walls of the fortress and surrounded by beautiful gardens and stone paths, there are several buildings. Perhaps the best known is the 18 th -century Peter and Paul Cathedral , the final resting place of Russian czars. Prison cells, a city museum, and the Saint Petersburg Mint building (founded in 1724 to manufacture coins and still in operation) are also located within the walls of the fortress.

The Alexander Column in Palace Square

St. Petersburg's main city square is a massive open public space right in front of the Winter Palace. The Alexander Column , built in the 1830s of a single piece of red granite, stands 47 meters tall at the center of the square. It was commissioned by Alexander I to commemorate the victory against Napoleon.

Many major events in Soviet/Russian history have taken place right on the square-Tsar Alexander II was shot here in 1879, and Bolshevik troops started the Revolution here in 1917 by storming the Winter Palace, where the royalty lived. Since then, the square has also been used for marches and demonstrations, from military parades to celebrate Victory Day (which marks the end of WWII) to New Year's Eve celebrations.

Peterhof Palace

Located less than 30 kilometers from central St. Petersburg, the 18 th -century Peterhof Palace complex consists of a series of buildings, several formal gardens, and a total of 173 fountains fed by underground springs. Designed in the style of the Palace of Versailles , Peterhof is best known for its "Grand Cascade," which consists of 64 fountains located on a series of terraces outside the main entrance of the palace.

The opulence of the palace itself can be discovered through a guided tour. It features 30 rooms decorated with truly imposing gold colors, lots of marble, and items brought back from Asia mixing in with Baroque-style fireplaces and giant mirrors. Although it's possible to take a bus to get here, you can also catch a boat from St. Petersburg. The ride takes 45 minutes on the Neva River and offers great views of the shoreline along the way.

Eliseyev Emporium

When the Eliseyev Emporium building was inaugurated in 1903, it was one of the most luxurious structures of its time. This might not be the case anymore, but the Art Nouveau details, stained-glass windows, crystal and metal candelabra, and hand-painted wall patterns are still quite impressive. The main attraction here, however, is the window displays, which feature moving puppets representing characters from The Nutcracker .

Today, this retail complex focuses mainly on food, with the most famous stop inside being the Eliseevy Merchants' Shop , Russia's oldest confectionery shop, which also sells high-end meats, spices, and dressings. The Eliseyev Emporium is also home to a unique homemade ice-cream shop selling flavors such as spicy basic and strawberry, green tea with jasmine, and "tender violet." Beautiful, hand-carved wooden souvenirs of traditional figures from Russian folktales are also available here.

Vasilyevsky Island

Located just across the river from the city center and the Winter Palace and connected to the mainland by two bridges and a metro line, this small island is home to a number of landmarks and beautiful parks-including a Museum of Electrical Transport; the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography; the Old Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange; and the Baroque Menshikov Palace, which serves as a branch of the Heritage Museum and holds mainly 17 th -century Russian art.

The Russian Academy of Sciences has several branches on the island, as well-and visitors might particularly appreciate visiting the Institute of Russian Literature , which holds original manuscripts of some of Russian's most famous writers, including beloved poet Alexander Pushkin.

Nevsky Avenue

Named after the Alexander Nevsky Lavra monastery that sits on this same street, the 4.5-kilometer-long Nevsky Prospect (or Avenue) is the heart of St. Petersburg. Home to the 18 th -century Great Gostiny Dvor, one of the oldest shopping arcades in the world, Nevsky Avenue also hosts lots of high-end shops, fancy restaurants, and luxury hotels.

Nevsky Prospect is all about opulent architecture -here, palaces and churches stand side by side, including the Late Baroque Stroganov Palace; the early 19 th -century Kazan Cathedral; and the Russian National Library, housed in a building dating back to the 1700s.

Even if you don't plan on doing any shopping here, the lights and atmosphere of this avenue are still worth a visit. Along the way, you'll find street artists; an original movie theater dating back to 1913; and the Anichkov Bridge, which was seriously damaged during WWII and restored without removing traces of shell damage from Nazi guns as a reminder of what happened here.

Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

One of the most beautiful sights in St. Petersburg is this multicolored church designed in traditional medieval Russian style. Alexander III ordered its construction in 1883 on the site where his father had been assassinated two years prior.

It took over 20 years for the church to be finally completed, partly because of budget and partly because the materials needed for its interior décor (which included 7,500 square meters of mosaics to cover the walls and ceilings) weren't that easy to come by.

The church was seriously damaged during the Russian Revolution in 1917, then used as a morgue during WWII and as a potato warehouse right after. It took almost 30 years of restoration to get the building to its original splendor-but rather than reopening as a church, the structure is now a museum of mosaics .

Mariinsky Theater

Catherine the Great ordered the formation of the imperial opera and ballet troupe in the late 18 th century, but it wasn't until 1860, almost 80 years later, that the company got its own theater. Once it opened, Mariinsky Theater was the most preeminent music hall in Russia-the place where major masterpieces from Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky were first premiered.

A masterpiece of Neoclassical architecture with Neo-Byzantine design elements, the Mariinsky Theater looks opulent from every angle-from the U-shaped auditorium to the ceiling mural to the massive crystal chandelier.

Today, the theater is one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in St. Petersburg. If you plan on attending a premiere or a popular performance (such as The Nutcracker in December or January), you will need to get tickets well in advance.

Canal with the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood at sunset

St. Petersburg's canals once played an important role in preventing floods-and while they still do keep waters at bay, they are now mainly used for transportation and to enjoy beautiful cruises down the Neva.

The canal system stretches for over 300 kilometers, with hundreds of bridges (both pedestrian and for traffic) crossing over them. The two most popular waterways are the Griboyedov Canal and the Winter Canal. The Griboyedov Canal flows under 21 bridges and alongside some of the city's most famous landmarks, including the Church of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood. The city's shortest canal, the Winter Canal , runs by the Winter Palace and the Hermitage Theater.

Both small and large boats are available to travel through the canals-some offering food, live music, or special English-language tours-including special rides to watch the bascule bridges opening at midnight.

Cruiser Aurora

The protected cruiser Aurora is a retired Russian naval ship with an armored deck. Built in the earlier 1900s, it served during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905 and survived the Battle of Tsushima, where Russia suffered massive losses both in human lives and in the number of ships sunk or destroyed. It was also a shot from an Aurora cannon that marked the beginning of the Russian Revolution in 1917.

The Aurora is now anchored on the river Neva and is the most visited branch of the Central Naval Museum . Visitors can tour six different rooms onboard the ship, where they can see recreated snippets of everyday life (including how people ate and slept), photographs and paintings, and model ships.

While access to the Aurora is free, the engine room is only accessible for an extra fee. The view from the deck of the Aurora is stunning, with imperial buildings and rocking waters all around.

Saint Isaac's Cathedral

Technically speaking, St. Isaac is the world's largest Orthodox basilica , though the building has been converted into a museum, and religious service is rarely held here anymore. The cathedral was named after Saint Isaac the Confessor, a Christian monk who founded an important monastery in Constantinople.

The cathedral was finished in 1858, after 40 years of construction work plagued by criticism about the Neoclassical building being "plain and not too impressive."

The museum's collection features many ancient icon paintings, mosaic images, and colored stonework and marble. Perhaps the best reason to visit St. Isaac's Cathedral, however, is the 360-degree view you'll get from the platform at the 43-meter-tall colonnade - a magical mix of colorful rooflines, golden spires, and a number of city landmarks.

Grand Menshikov Palace

Menshikov began to build his residence here in 1713, at about the same time as Peter began work on his own estate at Peterhof. Menshikov seemed intent on outdoing his master in terms of scale and grandeur, and commissioned architects Giovanni Mario Fontana and Gottfried Schadel, who were already building the Menshikov Palace in St. Petersburg, to design his seaside palace. After over a decade of work, which eventually bankrupted Menshikov, the palace was completed.

Facing the sea, with a two-level terrace in front of it, this charming yellow and white building consists of a concave central block with two single-storey galleries leading to prominent octagonal pavilions, one of which houses the palace chapel. On the south side of the building, two large ancillary wings, the Kitchen Wing and the Ladies' Wing, run from the pavilions perpendicular to the central block.

Menshikov had little time to enjoy his new palace before he was arrested and exiled in 1727. The estate at Oranienbaum was passed to the state, and Menshikov's palace became a naval hospital. In 1743, the estate was presented by Empress Elizabeth to her nephew, the future Peter III, who commissioned Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the greatest late baroque architect working in Russia, to renovate the palace. Rastrelli left the exterior of the palace almost untouched, but created sumptuous interiors that have, sadly, long since been destroyed. At this time, the western pavilion became known as the Japanese Pavilion, thanks to the collection of Japanese and Chinese ceramics it housed.

The palace was altered again in 1762 by Antonio Rinaldi, who added a granite staircase and semi-circular balcony to the northern terraces and redecorated many of the interiors. After serving as a Naval Cadet College from the end of the 18 th century, the palace was used as a residence by both Alexander I and his brother Mikhail. During the 19 th century, several famous architects, including Luigi Ruska, Carlo Rossi, and Vasiliy Satsov, reworked the interiors of the palace.

Today, while the Grand Menshikov Palace is still extremely impressive from the outside, its interiors are in a parlous state, and major renovation work still needs to be done to prevent parts of the building collapsing. For visitors, there is little to see except a collection of portraits of the various owners of Oranienbaum.
