Comparing attractions: which one is right for you.

When thinking about the best places for Puerto Rico families, you should consider things like age-appropriate activities, safety and security, comforts, and costs.

As a tourist who loves to try new things and see new places, my recent trip to Puerto Rico was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me. 

While I was there, I was able to go to the JungleQui Zipline Park.

I loved the rush of energy as I flew through the bush.

Everyone could find something they liked at the park because the trails were of different lengths and difficulty levels.

My next stop was the El Yunque National Forest.

Even though it was hard to get to the top of El Yunque, the view of the trees and mountains from there was worth it.

I also liked swimming in a waterfall because it was cool and exciting.

To Jet swim with turtles was a once-in-a-lifetime thing to do.

The water was so clear that you could see all kinds of fish and turtles.

It was fun, and I’ll never forget how close I got to the turtles.

Want to enjoy something more peaceful and beautiful? 

Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve had different kinds of places to live.

The bioluminescent bay was an excellent choice for El Yunque National Forest because it was beautiful and had amazing shining animals.

The first time I went ziplining at JungleQui Zipline Park, I felt like I was flying through a beautiful jungle.

Even though there are safety rules, ziplining can be expensive, especially for groups or families.

The next thing on my list is El Yunque National Forest, a gorgeous place for people who love nature.

As soon as I entered the forest, I was blown away by the beautiful views and lush greenery all around me.

El Yunque National Forest is a great place to see wildlife, but it can be hard to get to during busy times, and the weather is hard to predict.

Go to the Jet Snorkel for a once-in-a-lifetime diving adventure. 

The most amazing part of my experience was swimming with friendly sea turtles, which are known for being calm and moving elegantly.

The bioluminescent bay is one of the highlights of my tour at Las Cabezas de San Juan.

You can visit the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay , walk through the only rainforest in the United States, and even zipline through a nature reserve!

I grew up on the island, and I’ve done almost every one of the items on this list.

In this article, I will cover the 17 best things to do in Puerto Rico if you have kids:

1. Bioluminescent bays (5+)

Kids will feel surrounded by magic when they see the glowing water of a bio bay.

Keep in mind kayaking tours may not be suitable for younger kids.

Boat tours are available and may be more accessible for babies, toddlers, or larger families.

2. Beaches (all ages)

Going to the beach is the number one thing to do when you visit Puerto Rico!

Out of our 30 favorite beaches , I’d recommend swimming in the South and Southwest.

The water is calmer and clearer, so supervising kids is easier. 

If you’re traveling with little ones, avoid rocky beaches with strong currents or beaches that require boat access.

3. Movie night (all ages)

Movie night doesn’t have to be exclusive to your living room. 

Caribbean Cinemas has theaters across the island, offering every current major blockbuster. 

Kids are sure to love the theater lobby at Plaza Las Américas.

At a minimum, kids must be 4 feet tall and 100 pounds, so smaller children may not be able to participate.

5. Las Cascadas Water Park (all ages)

Located in Aguadilla , Las Cascadas Water Park is the perfect place to visit if you want a break from the ocean.

There are several slides, obstacle courses, a lazy river, and pools for both kids and adults.

Keep in mind some slides or sections can have height restrictions for safety.

6. Toro Verde Urban Park (all ages)

Toro Verde has a second location in San Juan with more variety.

Aside from smaller zip lines and indoor climbing, Urban Park has a giant arcade with both traditional games and VR experiences. 

It’s the perfect place if your kids are of mixed ages or interests — there’s something for everyone!

7. Carabalí (all ages)

This is another adventure park more fit for older kids.

Carabalí excursions include ATVs, horseback riding, and go-karts!

Younger kids can have fun on their tractor-pulled hayride.

8. Snorkeling and Scuba Diving (6+) 

If your family loves the beach, take it a step further and go snorkeling or take a scuba tour .

Kids need to be 6+ to go on snorkeling tours and 10+ for scuba tours.

9. Summit Trampoline Park (all ages)

This indoor park in Mayagüez is an action-packed experience your kids will love.

Some of the larger areas include climbing walls, dodgeball, wipeout, and more!

There are also soft-play areas, so young children can have fun in a safe space.

10. Museums (all ages)

Not as action-packed as some of the other items on this list — visiting museums. 

If your children aren’t fans of high-energy activities, take them to the Children’s Museum, the Puerto Rico Art Museum ( MAPR ), or the Ponce Art Museum ( MAP ). 

My absolute favorite is Museo El Cemí in Jayuya . It’s a one-of-a-kind look into Puerto Rico’s native history. 

I’m sure many kids like myself will find the experience unforgettable. 

11. Ice Cream! (all ages)

Heladería Lares is famous for its unusual ice cream flavors!

Here you can try flavors like sesame, rice and beans, codfish, garlic, and more! 

Common flavors like vanilla and chocolate are also available if you have picky eaters.

12. El Yunque (5+)

Hiking across El Yunque is the perfect plan if your kids love exploring.

Remember to bring water, snacks, and bug repellent.

The rainforest can be overwhelming so make sure you’re prepared.

13. La Marquesa (all ages)

La Marquesa is located in Guaynabo , not far from San Juan .

This forest park is great for animal lovers.

After taking a gondola over the forest, there’s a large aviary with lots of colorful birds.

14. Arecibo Lightouse (all ages)

If you have little pirates in your house, you can’t miss the Arecibo Lighthouse . 

The historic lighthouse is attached to a pirate-themed waterpark, complete with pirate ships, an aquarium, and a mini zoo. 

This spot was a childhood favorite of mine — the perfect mix of sightseeing and kid-friendly fun. 

15. Visiting Old San Juan (all ages)

Old San Juan is the most frequented tourist destination in Puerto Rico. 

The colorful buildings, restaurants, and shops can be a fun time for kids of any age.

16. Flying Kites at El Morro (all ages)

El Morro’s green hills are known for being the perfect spot to fly kites.

Kids can even choose their own kite from the local vendors and have a fun time playing.

Toddlers can play in water jets and shallow pools while adults relax at wave pools and lazy rivers.

Snorkeling is one of the best kid-friendly things to do in Puerto Rico. The beaches in the archipelago have high underwater visibility that makes it easy to spot sea turtles, manta rays, corals, and schools of fish even from a distance.

For example, turtles, blue tangs, yellowtail snappers, and damselfish swim at Escambrón Beach’s artificial reefs, located right in San Juan. Offshore, the islands of Vieques and Culebra mesmerize visitors with the thriving reefs on their coasts.

You’ll find snorkeling gear rentals on popular public beaches like Flamenco Beach and Seven Seas Beach, but if you’re planning to visit remote beaches without facilities, it’s best to bring your snorkeling gear with you.

Explore San Juan's historic fortresses

Castillo San Felipe del Morro , also known as El Morro, and Castillo San Cristóbal are two of the best things to do in San Juan with family. These fortresses were built by the Spaniards in 1539 and 1634. 

Kids visiting will rave about secret tunnels, dungeons, and courtyards while learning about pirate attacks and epic battles. The esplanade outside El Morro is a popular kite-flying spot. Visit in the late afternoon for cooler temperatures.

Be entertained at a vibrant festival

Puerto Rico has three "bio bays" with a dense concentration of microscopic algae that creates a glowing effect in the dark. Head out on a family adventure to kayak in the brightest bio bay in the world at Mosquito Bay in Vieques or in Laguna Grande near Puerto Rico's main airport. 

For a literal immersive experience, dive at La Parguera in Lajas and watch the water light up with every movement.

Fly through the sky on a zip line

Adventure-loving families shouldn't miss the second-longest zip line in the world at Toro Verde Adventure Park in Orocovis or the tallest zip line in the Caribbean in Jayuya. El Yunque also offers multiple zip line parks that make for a fun family day out.

Learn to surf

There are plenty of beaches in Puerto Rico to ride waves with your family at any time of the year. Surfer’s Beach in Aguadilla, Middles Beach in Isabela and Domes Beach in Rincón, are sought-after surfing beaches on the West Coast. 

Find surfing shops and rentals near Hobie Beach in Carolina, Aviones Beach in Loíza and La Pared in Luquillo on the north coast. Don’t shy away from the experience if you’re new to the sport. Rincón Surf School , Water World Surfing School  or Surfing Puerto Rico offer group surfing classes, perfect for keeping active teens busy.

Planning tips

While beaches are one of the best things to experience in Puerto Rico with kids, not all of them are safe for swimming. Always check locally and look out for red flags on the beach before dipping in.

To prevent mosquito-borne illnesses – such as dengue, chikungunya, or zika – use bug repellent. You can easily find it in drugstores and supermarkets in Puerto Rico.

A car is recommended for moving between towns. However, historical city centers or downtown (often known as pueblo ) in places like Old San Juan, Ponce Pueblo, Aguadilla Pueblo, Rincón Pueblo, Isabel II in Vieques, and Dewey in Culebra are pedestrian-friendly areas with the main plaza, restaurants, shops, attractions, and hotels within walking distance.

20+ Fun Things To Do In Puerto Rico With Kids

My list of the best things to do in Puerto Rico with kids to help you plan your trip!

There are SO many fun things to do with kids in Puerto Rico it’s hard to know where to begin. 

In fact, I’d argue that Puerto Rico is the most affordable and kid-friendly island in the Caribbean. 

It is easy to get around with a rental car and has a huge variety of activities to keep kids busy .

Where else can you hike up a mountain in a rainforest, swim in crystal clear waters, and kayak in a bioluminescent bay, all in one day?!

Read on for my top things to do in Puerto Rico with kids , compiled over many visits to the island. 

All of these activities are accessible from the northeast part of the island, which is where I recommend you are based when traveling with kids. 

El Yunque National Forest

My top pick for things to do in Puerto Rico for kids is a visit to El Yunque National Forest. 

That’s because there are SO MANY things to do there with kids! Here is a list: 

• Visit the only tropical rainforest in the US Forest System
• Swim under a waterfall that is only a 5-minute hike from the road
• Hike to a tower on top of a mountain for incredible views (easy enough for most kiddos)
• Explore a scenic river
• Ride horses
• Learn about the human history of the rainforest
• Soak up lots of knowledge in the Vistor’s Center
• Eat some authentic Puerto Rican food
• Slide down a natural rock waterslide

You’ll see exotic plants, waterfalls, scenic rivers, and historic sites within the park. 

Here are my suggestions for what to do with kids in the rainforest: 

• Short hike (5 minutes) to Juan Diego waterfalls (bring your swimsuit!)
• Moderately difficult 1.6-mile roundtrip hike up Mt Britton to the tower (if your kids aren’t up for that hike yet, climb up Yokahua Tower instead)
• Short and easy 1-mile roundtrip Angelito Trail to play in Rio Mameyes
• Check out El Portal Visitor’s Center for exhibits, the gift shop, and lunch

All of these activities are located in the La Mina Recreation Area.

Currently, you no longer need a timed reservation to access many of the experiences in the rainforest. 

If you want your trip to the rainforest to be extra educational, you can spend a few hours exploring the Visitor’s Center. You’ll see Puerto Rican parrots along with other interesting exhibits.

The rainforest is not to be missed on a Puerto Rico family vacation!

Day Trip To Culebra & Flamenco Beach

My absolute favorite day trip in Puerto Rico is a visit to Culebra.

Culebra is a small island 17 miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico. It and Vieques ( a nearby island) are sometimes referred to as the “Spanish Virgin Islands”.

The main attraction for us was Flamenco Beach, which often makes it on lists of the best beaches in the world!

First of all – Flamenco Beach did not disappoint. 

I feel like I am spoiled for beaches forever.

It’s a challenge to get to, however, which is part of what keeps it so nice!

There is an abandoned tank from the Navy on the beach you can walk down to check out. It’s really cool to see and take pictures with. 

We brought our snorkeling gear and were able to see some fish around the reefs off the beach. 

It was my daughter’s first time snorkeling outside of the pool and it was the perfect introduction. The water is clear, calm, and shallow. 

Here was my spot in the sand for the day. Looks like paradise, right? 

Here are some of the things to do with kids on Culebra:

11. Rent a golf cart and explore the island 12. Snorkel off the beach to see fish and more 13. Take your picture with a WWII tank that has been turned into a work of art 14. Chill on one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet

In fact we were having so much fun we couldn’t bring ourselves to go home!

I was able to get us tickets on the late ferry so we could spend an extra five hours in Culebra. 

We grabbed dinner at a little restaurant next to the ferry dock and were joined by a new friend (This might have been the highlight of the entire trip for my daughter.)

We are still talking about our day on Culebra years later.

Bio Bay Kayak Tour

One evening we ventured over to Fajardo, which was about 45 minutes from our condo, to take a kayak tour of the Laguna Grande “Bio Bay”. 

Bioluminescent plankton live in abundance in the Bio Bay. They give off a neon blue-green color when you disturb them. 

There are only five places in the world where they live in such high concentrations that the water appears to glow – and three of these places are in Puerto Rico!

Here are the fun things kids get to do on this tour:

15. See bioluminescent plankton glow on your hands 16. Paddle through a mangrove forest in almost total darkness 17. See fish jump out of the water right by your boat (happened both times I have done this tour)

I had to see this amazing sight for myself so I booked a kayak tour of Laguna Grande, the most popular of the three Bio Bays.

Unfortunately, you can’t capture the glowing plankton on camera, but here we are paddling into the bay as the sun sets. 

We went on a night with cloud cover and a moon about half full, making it hard to see the glow without help. 

So our tour guides pulled a giant tarp over all of the kayaks to make it darker.

Then we could easily see the “bling bling”. They looked like thousands of tiny diamonds in the water!

I booked our kayak tour with Pure Adventures through Viator and was really happy with it.

The price was reasonable and the adventure and unique experience made it worth it for me. 

You’d be fine on this trip even if you’ve never kayaked before. 

Our guides gave basic instructions and safety information and were super professional. 

Tours left at 6:15 and 8:15 and we took the earlier one since the later one was after my daughter’s bedtime. 

If you want to best chance to see the bioluminescence, I suggest booking on a night with as little moon as possible.

Since my daughter wasn’t into paddling herself, I did all of the work for both of us, which made it pretty tiring. 

But with two people to paddle, it would be an easy trip. I highly recommend booking a Bio Bay kayak tour on your trip to Puerto Rico.

Things To Do In Puerto Rico with Kids: El Morro

One of the top places to visit in San Juan is the huge fort known as “El Morro” or more officially Castillo San Felipe del Morro . 

It occupies the northwest corner of the city and was designed to guard the entrance to San Juan. 

We visited on the last day of our trip and it ended up being a highlight for us!

El Morro was built from the 1500’s to the 1700’s and is such a cool piece of history. 

It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is managed by the US Park Service. 

Kids get in free and adults are $10 each unless you have a National Parks Pass – then it’s free!

You also get admission to the other fort in San Juan, Castillo San Cristóbal , if you visit within 24 hours. 

We spent several hours exploring the fort and had a blast.

It’s rare to be in a building so old in the New World!

18. Get your picture sitting on a cannon 19. Explore a historic fort that looks like real-life Pirates of the Caribbean

You can learn about the Spanish colonization of the Caribbean, the era of pirates, and how Puerto Rico became a US Territory at the fort. 

The historical treatment of native people of the island is sad and upsetting, but important to understand as a visitor. 

I highly recommend setting a few hours aside to explore El Morro.

I think it’s one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico with kids. 

There are lots of beautiful public beaches along the northeast coast of Puerto Rico that are perfect for a beach day with kids. 

Here are a few of our favorites!

Luquillo Beach is the closest beach to El Yunque. There is ample parking right in front of the beach that is usually free on weekdays and a few dollars on weekends. 

There is plenty of space to spread out which is a great benefit of this beach. 

There is a kiosk that is usually open that sells tropical drinks and snacks. 

The waves are calm and you’ll see lots of kids swimming in the water.

Plus the Luquillo Kiosks are a short distance away with tons of options for dinner afterward!

Friends of ours who used to spend the winter in Puerto Rico recommended the Luquillo Kiosks as a place to grab some local food. 

The kiosks are mostly restaurants but there are some gift shops and bars in the mix, too. 

We went on a weeknight and it was pretty empty – but I’ve heard that the weekends bring the crowds. 

There were lots of places to eat dinner but we chose Kiosk #20 – Terruno. 

We enjoyed some authentic Puerto Rico food that was SO delicious. Even my seven-year-old daughter loved everything.

Most of the restaurants have open-air dining that looks out on the ocean. You can find something for everyone at the kiosks. 

Don’t be scared by their ramshackle appearance – the kiosks are essential Puerto Rico and you won’t be disappointed!

Another beach that is nearby is Seven Seas Beach in Fajardo . You’ll see fewer tourists here – it’s more of a local beach. 

You can rent kayaks off the beach at Seven Seas beach which is a great activity. 

Parking is usually just a few dollars (if there is anyone working at the gate). 

There isn’t much beach at high tide so if you can plan a trip at low tide you’ll have more space. 

The water is calm and clear so this is another great beach for young kids!

There is also a restaurant with a take-out window just across the street in case you get hungry. 

Seven Seas Beach is another great option for a beach day with kids in Puerto Rico. 

Things to do with kids in Puerto Rico: Explore Old San Juan

While I’ve already mentioned a visit to the historic fort, El Morro, exploring the rest of Old San Juan on foot is another fun activity for kids. 

Here kids can 

20. Take a picture with colorful buildings or under a giant Puerto Rican flag

21. Visit the cats at Callejon Hospital, and

22. Eat lots of yummy Puerto Rican treats.

It’s a beautiful, historic city that’s easy to navigate. 

We grabbed some lunch in a little café that was very affordable.

You can find them all around the city and they are tourist-friendly. Pretty much everyone in the city speaks English. 

We loved the colorful buildings and the old steps. It’s a quintessentially Caribbean vibe.  

Definitely make a stop by Calle de la Fortaleza – it’s the street that was previously covered by colorful umbrellas and the Puerto Rican flag. 

It’s the perfect place to take a selfie or a group photo to remember your trip. 

I also have to mention the amazing frappes we had at San Juan Frappes – they were so good!

Be sure to stop in and grab a drink if it’s hot. 

Also, it would be criminal to skip paletas, so be sure to stop by Senor Paleta and grab one. 

Exploring the streets of Old San Juan is a must-do on a Puerto Rico family vacation. There’s also lots of shopping if you are into that. 🙂

One Week In Puerto Rico With Kids: Best Itinerary For Unlimited Family Fun

Are you looking for information, insights and tips on how to spend one week in Puerto Rico with kids? At This Mom Is Going Places we do thorough research prior to visiting each destination. After each family trip we share our best tips and our itinerary in hopes to make it at bit easier for you to plan your family vacation.

In this post, we will share with you an itinerary for seven days in Puerto Rico with kids, focusing on the north and west side of the island. We will add attractions in the East and South parts of Puerto Rico once we complete future trips to the “Enchanted Island”.

Although I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, I now live in Florida, USA with my family. This is the first time we visit the island since we relocated back in 2016 when my daughters were only 6 months and 2 years old respectively. In order for my children to discover where they were born, we took them on a trip for Spring Break 2022 to Puerto Rico. It was amazing to see the island through their eyes.

We want you to discover everything we experienced! So, without further a due, here’s our itinerary to spend one week in Puerto Rico with kids.

Itinerary for One Week In Puerto Rico With Kids

Day 1: old san juan.

Old San Juan is the second oldest city in the Western Hemisphere. It is also the oldest city in the U.S. and its territories. Listed as the Old San Juan Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, it is also a National Historic Landmark District. Many historical buildings and structures in the city have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983, including the Fortaleza, city walls, and the castles of El Morro and San Cristóbal.

Things to do in Old San Juan

Visiting Old San Juan is like traveling back in time. Fortresses and castles dating back five centuries, romantic and bohemian ambiance, exquisite cuisine, and festive atmosphere make it a popular location. We particularly love the architecture, the cobblestone streets and the amount of things to do with kids such as flying kites in El Morro, feeding the pigeons at the Pigeons Park and walking through the Paseo de la Princesa.

As for dining we loved El Jibarito restaurant at Calle Sol. They specialize in Puerto Rican food and it was amazing.

Day 2: El Yunque National Rainforest & Luquillo Kiosks

About El Yunque National Rainforest

El Yunque is the only national rainforest in the US National Parks system.  It’s an awesome place for hiking. The trails vary on difficulty and some of them reward your hike with waterfalls.  Right now reservations are required for most of the trails. Here you can take a look at the description of each trail. Reservations are made through this website .

Angelito Hiking Trail at El Yunque

My favorite is La Mina but it’s currently closed. If you are looking for waterfalls then you might want to try the Juan Diego trail. We opted for the Angelito trail for two reasons:

• it’s an easy hike so it was doable for my kids and my mom
• you don’t need reservations for this trail because you don’t enter through the portal

To get to the Angelito trail you need to put this address on your GPS: Road 988 km 3.6. Parking is roadside wherever you find a spot. As you enter this short trail you will immediately go though a cute bridge and then you will descend through a low-mountain forest to the Río Mameyes, an officially designated “Wild and Scenic River” by the federal government. Near Las Damas Pool and other swimming spots, the roar of rushing water draws you onward.

Las Damas natural pool was just amazing. We got into the cold water and it was so refreshing. The views are incredible and the connection you feel with nature is difficult to describe. This was an amazing family getaway for sure.

More Things to Do Nearby El Yunque

One thing we wanted to do but didn’t have the time was to visit Las Pailas (just put it like that in your GPS). It’s another part of the rainforest where there’s a natural slide made out of rocks. While we can’t talk by own experience, I have heard a lot of good things about it, so I thought I’d mention it in case you want to give it a try.

Luquillo Kiosks: Teruño

We ended our magical day heading to the Luquillo kiosks for dinner at Terruño . Food is delicious and best of all, it has beach view. Stay tuned for an upcoming blog post about my favorite restaurants in the island in which I’ll provide more details on this and other places to eat in Puerto Rico.

Mom #ProTips:

• Bring water shoes to El Yunque if you want to get in the river. Rocks are slippery.
• Bring snacks and drinks but please make sure to also bring your own trash bags and take it back with you. It’s the least you can do to help preserve such a beautiful place.
• Make reservations ahead of time to dine at Terruño and get there with enough time to find parking which can be difficult sometimes, depending on the day (kiosks get crowded on weekends).

Day 3: Northern Coast

Drive towards the west side of the island and take the coastal route to enjoy the beach views. Make the most out of your day by visiting these three places:

1st Stop: Lunch at Arrecife 681, Arecibo

Make a first stop to have lunch at Arrecife 681 . A friend recommended this restaurant and I have to say that it didn’t disappoint. It is a non-pretentious spot right by the beach with a breathtaking view. They serve Puerto Rican food and tropical drinks.

My husband enjoyed a red snapper filet with mofongo (a traditional smashed plantain dish). I had the mero bites with Puerto Rican tostones and it was amazing! The girls had mero bites and chips with a side of fries. My picky eaters ate it all! For drinks we had acerola juice. I hadn’t have one for years! So good!

A nice feature about Arrecife 681 is a wooden made Puerto Rico flag which doesn’t have the blue triangle. This was intentionally left out so that the blue of the sky filled that part. Brilliant! They also have a bench were you can seat and just enjoy the view.

2nd Stop: Guajataca Tunnel

If you’re into historic places this is for you. Tunnels were an integral part of the national railway system that connected the island during the first half of the 20th century. The railroad tunnel called Guajataca Tunnel was declared a historical monument in 2000.

This makes for an excellent one-day getaway that can be enjoyed at any time of year. First you will see amazing murals perfect for pictures. Then let the kids have fun in the swing and enter the tunnel for an easy hike. Experiencing the beach on the other side after walking through the tunnel is the most spectacular part of the trip. You will find caves and hidden areas that kids will enjoy exploring. My daughters had a lot of fun climbing the rocks. It’s really worth checking out.

On weekends there are food stalls, music concerts and artisan markets in the Guajataca Tunnel. Entrance and parking are free.

3rd Stop: Cara del Indio in Isabela, Puerto Rico

Isabela welcomes visitors with this impressive rock carving alongside the highway. Cara del Indio is a monument honoring Cacique Mabodomaca, who ruled in the territories now known as Isabela and Quebradillas in Puerto Rico. During the Battle of Guajataca, Cacique Mabodamaca and his Indians fought bravely against the Spanish. Sculpted in 1987, it was created by Juan Ramón Rodríguez Román. It’s always fun to stop by and take pictures. Visiting Cara del Indio is definitely among the signature things to do in Isabela.

Where to Stay in Isabela? Villas del Mar Hau

Finish your day by checking in at your hotel. We were hosted by Parador Villas del Mar Hau and we couldn’t have asked for a better place! The rooms were clean and comfortable and we enjoyed the best beachfront views. It was perfectly located near all the attractions that we wanted to visit during our visit to the West Coast.

Day 4: Enjoy the Hotel and Playa Montones, Isabela

Staying at such a beautiful hotel deserved a full day to enjoy the amenities. Villas del Mar Hau is located right by Playa Montones, one of my favorites. On one side of the beach you can do kite surfing and on the other side there is a natural pool that is great for swimming and is safe for small children.

You should also spend some time walking and taking advantage of their multiple spots for photo opps. We especially recommend the big chairs – there’s two- and the blue door. Other cool amenities are the pool, a basketball and tennis court and a restaurant called Olas y Arena.

At Olas y Arena we enjoyed an amazing view while tasting one of their signature dishes: Montones. That’s Spanish for “bunches” and that’s really what you get, bunches of delicious flavors. I would also recommend order their frozen drinks. We tried the mango frappe and piña coladas and both were perfectly refreshing after a beach day.

Day 6: Cabo Rojo

Cabo Rojo is one of my absolute favorite beach towns in Puerto Rico. When I lived on the island, this used to be one of my go-to places when I did local tourism. Beaches are beautiful, food is delicious and the vibe is just amazing. That’s why I was so excited to introduce Cabo Rojo to my daughters.

Have You Ever Seen Pink Water? – Las Salinas Salt Flats

Even though I’ve been to Cabo Rojo multiple times, this was the first time visiting Las Salinas. I had heard a lot about it and had seen pictures so it was a very interesting experience to see it by ourselves.

It was when I came across a sign in the road on our way to Los Morrillos lighthouse that I learned the Salinas are right there. We parked aside of the road and went in to explore. This is a commercial salt-harvesting operation site.

The water in this area seems to be very salty and this is a plant that processes salt. They flood the pits and let the wind and sun evaporate the water. This forms salt crystals that they scrape and scoop out once there is enough salt built up in the pits. I intentionally didn’t edit my pictures so that you can have a real idea of the pink color in the water. It’s a light shade of pink but it is certainly noticeable.

This is a nice stop before going to the lighthouse. It doesn’t take long. We spent probably about 10-15 minutes.

Los Morrillos Lighthouse

Cabo Rojo’s lighthouse is located at Los Morrillos Peninsula and it marks the southwest tip of the island. It was the second lighthouse built by Spain in Puerto Rico and it is one of 27 sites included in the National Register of Historic Places.

The road from the Salt Flats towards the lighthouse premises is bumpy. We were driving a Raptor pickup truck and felt every single bump so take that into consideration. The GPS will take you to the parking lot. From there you will see the trail to walk towards the lighthouse. The hike is short, easy and worth it.

Los Morrillos lighthouse in Cabo Rojo has a beautiful Spanish-colonial style architecture. It wasn’t open when we visited but the 360° views of the ocean were absolutely breathtaking! Words cannot describe how beautiful it is. Definitely a must-see experience!

Mom #ProTips

• Although the hike is short and easy, the area has no shades. Therefore, I recommend you wearing light clothes and bringing enough water. Good walking shoes is also a good idea.
• While enjoying the view and taking pictures please, don’t get too close to the edge of the cliffs. We found a little stone that served as memorial for one person who fell off. You don’t want to be the next.
• Make the most out of your visit by stopping by Playuela, also known as Playa Sucia, which is right in that same area as well as the natural rock bridge formation.

Boquerón Village

A main attraction in the southwestern region of the island is the village of Boquerón, located on Boquerón Bay. Enjoy wandering around the charming village’s main street and waterfront boulevard. It is a beautiful small town with colorful street art as well as small restaurants and vendors right by the lovely turquoise water.

Taste freshly cooked street food from stalls that are shaded by colorful umbrellas or enter a tropical rustic restaurant. We enjoyed lunch at Cabo Beach House. Food was delicious and location was unbeatable. If you want a really good sea food definitely check it out.

While in Poblado de Boquerón, make sure to snap some pictures at the swing, the Puerto Rico flag bench and the Muelle de la Libertad (Liberty Pier). Then head to Boquerón Beach.

Boquerón Beach

It is not uncommon for the beach at Balneario de Boquerón to be awarded with a Blue Flag, a coveted award granted to beaches around the world that meet very strict standards, particularly when it comes to water quality and safety.

There are shallow spots along the beach with clear water that are great for kids to play in. We loved the white sand and pristine calm water. Many palm trees offer shelter from the sun. Stay until sunset! Boquerón beach is so good for a family escape, you’ll have a great time. Fully recommended!! A must-see in Cabo Rojo.

It is a good beach for water sports like snorkeling or kayaking.

Day 5: Gozalandia Waterfall, San Sebastián

What is Gozalandia?

Gozalandia is a hidden piece of heaven with impressive waterfalls located in San Sebastián, Puerto Rico. You don’t need a guided tour to enjoy it. Just get there and choose among two options.

Gozalandia Lower Falls

You will see the first path right away. Take the stairs and go down to the first area. This is where the waterfall looks most beautiful in my opinion but it’s also the most crowded. You are able to climb the rocks and jump but please, be very careful as you should only do this in the deeper areas.

Gozalandia Upper Falls

You will see the second path towards the right when you get to the entrance. This one requires a moderate hike uphill but it’s so worthy! The waterfall looks amazing as well and there’s even a rope that some locals have fixed so that you can swing and fall into the water. That was my husband’s favorite part. I enjoyed getting into the natural pool with the girls. The whole atmosphere is perfect to disconnect from the world.

Gozalandia is definitely one of the cheapest and most worthwhile attractions you’ll find in Puerto Rico.

• Bring water shoes. You’ll have to go through some slippery rocks to get to the natural pool.
• Bring rash guards as well. The water is very cold.
• Additionally, bring cash. You will need to pay $10 for parking.
• There’s a restaurant in the premises. In my opinion it’s overpriced. You can bring your own food or dine at near restaurants.
• Know that this is a small place, so you can easily combine Gozalandia with a visit to other nearby attractions such as Crash Boat beach in Aguadilla or the Camuy River Caves in Camuy.

Day 7: Gran Parque del Norte Hatillo

This is the last day and it’s time to head back East towards the airport. One thing you can do on your way back is stopping at the Gran Parque del Norte in Hatillo.

It is a big park where kids can enjoy running around and having fun at the playgrounds. Other things you can enjoy at El Gran Parque del Norte are beach volleyball or basketball courts, the lookout, a wooded swing, the boardwalk, gazebos and seats by the beach. There are showers and restrooms where you can change clothes. Bring snacks and drinks and take a really nice break here. Make sure to look around for some cute instagramable spots!

On weekends there’s additional things to do like rides, food trucks and music as well as a little train for the kids. Entrance and parking are free.

Is Puerto Rico a good place to go with kids? Absolutely! Puerto Rico is one of the best travel destinations in the world because of the amount and variety of experiences it offers in just one place. thank you for the wonderful resources! I believe were staying in El conqui so we’ll do El Yunque, Hacienda Carabali, an so on, but when we head out west we’ll definitely keep your Boqueron and Cabo Rojo suggestions in mind!

I have stayed at El Conquistador and it’s really good! You will love the lazy river at the Coqui water park. Definitely take the boat to Palomino, it’s so beautiful there and it’s good for snorkeling. Also after el Yunque dine at Terruño at the Luquillo kiosks… and try the piña coladas!!! One thing I’ve done in the East is kayaking at the bioluminiscent bay. We booked the tour with Yokahu and it was worth every penny, but that depends on how old are the kids. Best time to visit Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a great place to visit any time of year. With a tropical climate, the Caribbean Island stays warm year-round. However, when deciding what time of year to visit Puerto Rico on a family vacation, keep in mind the months of August and September are hurricane season. 

High season for tourism is typically November through January, as it is less rainy and great for those looking for a tropical escape during the winter months. 

If you are looking to plan a summer trip to Puerto Rico with kids after school lets out, aim for early June to avoid crowds, get the best prices, and have the best chance for enjoyable weather. 

How many days do you need in Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is a great, family-friendly place to visit for a long weekend, a full week, or even a couple of weeks. Unlike many islands that only offer beach activities, Puerto Rico has mountains, rainforests and caves, as well.

There are lots of fun things to do in Puerto Rico with kids that can entertain you for weeks, if you desire.  

Give yourself no less than 4 days in Puerto Rico with kids, but if you want to explore the entire main island as well as travel to the other islands of Vieques and Culebra, you’ll want to be sure to have at least one week in Puerto Rico.

Where to stay in Puerto Rico

If you are spending most of your time in San Juan, there are two main areas to stay in Puerto Rico. 

Old San Juan

Staying in Old San Juan puts you within walking distance to the forts, restaurants, shops, and the general atmosphere of this beautiful, historic area. Be sure to select a hotel with a rooftop pool , as it will be a great place to relax during the heat of the afternoon.

We stayed at Hotel El Convento; a former convent built in 1646 that has been renovated into a beautiful hotel. While it has a great rooftop pool, guests also get access to the beach resort at El Convento’s sister property , where you can enjoy a day splashing in the ocean and access to bathrooms, lounge chairs, and a beach bar and restaurant.

Isla Verde is another popular option, particularly for families seeking a beach vacation.

Isla Verde is lined with large hotels, resorts and beach clubs that offer a relaxing beach holiday for those who want to play in the waves or put their toes in the sand. 

While a day at the beach is still an option even if you stay in one of the boutique hotels in Old San Juan, if you are primarily looking for a beach holiday in Puerto Rico, Isla Verde is a great way to go.

Getting around Puerto Rico with Kids

Although taxis and Ubers are readily available in Puerto Rico, if you plan to do a Puerto Rico road trip or even a self-guided day trip to some of the fun places outside of San Juan, you will likely need to rent a car . 

You can get around San Juan using Ubers or taxis , but to get to the El Yunque rainforest, other cities in Puerto Rico, or one of the bioluminescent bays, you will either need to book a guided tour or have a car.

Things to do in Puerto Rico with Kids

While Puerto Rico is a diverse island with lots of unique activities there are certainly some that are more suited for those visiting Puerto Rico with children.

Wander the streets of Old San Juan 

San Juan is one of the oldest cities in the Americas . With blue cobblestone streets, colorful facades, and colonial architecture, wandering through the streets of Old San Juan is a memorable and cultural experience.

Similar to Old Town Cartagena, Colombia , there are lots of centuries-old buildings, beautiful doors and historical churches that the whole family will love exploring. 

You’ll also find lots of colorful murals tucked away down narrow alleys and streets. It is a great place to hire a local photographer and take professional family photos or simply wander and take your own pictures.

Stop in local shops, eat traditional Puerto Rican food at one of the locally owned restaurants, or enjoy a pina colada (without alcohol for the kids) at the birthplace of the sweet drink . 

Your kids will also love finding, and sometimes petting all of the stray cats that roam the streets. Don’t worry, they are all vaccinated, and many of them are friendly and even adoptable through Save a Gato Cat Sanctuary , a wonderful nonprofit organization that feeds, vaccinates, and spays or neuters the stray cats. 

To learn more about the history of San Juan and the settlement of Puerto Rico, you can join a guided walking tour through the town, which is a great way for older kids to combine vacation and education!

Explore the fortresses of El Morro and San Cristobal

All kids love fortresses and castles, and luckily San Juan, Puerto Rico has two of them!

The old defensive forts of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo de San Cristóbal are impressive fortresses originally built to protect the island from invaders. Nowadays, they are historical sites and museums that are fascinating to visit. 

With lots of kid-sized nooks and crannies to explore, kids can squeeze through small tunnels and gaze out at the ocean through small windows in the fortress.

The fortresses are in full sun and can get very hot, so be sure to bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen, a hat, breathable clothing, and sunglasses to keep you cool while you explore. 

Enjoy a Day at the Beach

No island trip would be complete without at least one day spent at the beach.

Puerto Rico has some beautiful beaches, including those near Rincon, on the island’s west side and those near Fajardo on the east side. But even within the capital city of San Juan, there are several beaches where kids can swim and play in the waves or sand. 

Along Isla Verde, hotels and family-friendly resorts line long, clean stretches of soft sandy beaches. All beaches in Puerto Rico are public , so even if you are not staying at one of the hotels, you can visit and enjoy the beaches in front of them.

Just make sure you bring your beach essentials with you!

Explore Caves 

One of the best things about visiting Puerto Rico with kids is the diversity in the types of activities on the island. Puerto Rico boasts the third largest cave system in the world , Rio Camuy Cave.

Tours of the cave are kid-friendly and take you along a well-defined path through stalagmites and beneath stalactites. But that isn’t the only cave on the island. 

A day trip to the northern coast of Puerto Rico, near the town of Arecibo, allows you to explore Cueva del Indio , an inexpensive hidden cave along the coast and Cueva Ventana .

While in this region, you can also go cave tubing at Tanama Eco-Adventure.  

You can book a guided cave tubing tour that meets up in Arecibo or book a day trip from San Juan that takes you to Cueva del Indio and Camuy Caverns if you prefer to let someone else make the arrangements and do the driving. 

Hike in the El Yunque National Forest

El Yunque Rainforest is the only rainforest in the US National Forest System. It is a great place to experience the diversity of a tropical climate and teach kids about the environment.

There are several popular hikes in El Yunque that are easy and kid-friendly, including la Mina Trail, which was damaged in Hurricane Maria but could reopen in late 2024.

The trail follows a river and then ends at a picturesque waterfall that cascades into a small natural pool that is gentle and shallow enough for a family swim.

For families visiting Puerto Rico with kids over the age of five, you can book an excursion that takes you to the El Yunque National Forest and to an area with natural waterslides .

One of the most unique experiences in Puerto Rico for kids and adults alike is the bioluminescent bays. While this natural phenomenon is not common in many places on earth, Puerto Rico has three bioluminescent bays where you can experience the bioluminescent glow in the water!

While its brightest bioluminescent bay, Mosquito Bay , is located on the island of Vieques, there are two others located on Puerto Rico’s main island. 

Having visited both of the bioluminescent bays on the main island, La Parguera , located in southwest Puerto Rico, is the best bioluminescent bay for families , and the only one that allows you to swim in the glowing water. 

However, the other one at Bio Bay Laguna Grande near Fajardo, is closer to San Juan.

Bioluminescence is caused by microorganisms in the water that emit a short burst of light when disturbed, so with every movement of your hand as you tread water, a greenish-blue glow is created in the water.

In the words of our daughter when she experienced it, “it’s the coolest thing ever!”

From beaches to rainforests, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, zip-lining, bike-riding down the boardwalk; endless activities and things to do in Puerto Rico with kids.  Or if you want to relax, listen to the waves, and feel the ocean breeze. Puerto Rico offers this, too.

#5 ~ You can learn tons of history. 

The Taínos were the dominant indigenous culture when Christopher Columbus arrived in 1493.  Many years (and wars) later, in 1898, Puerto Rico became a possession of the United States.  And the rest is “history.”

#6 ~ To experience a unique culture. 

Rich and passionate, a culture that is a mixture of Spanish, African, and Taino.  The food, music, and attitude are colorful and exhilarating.

#7 ~ Puerto Rico is not crowded at all, but it will be. 

Puerto Rico is a hidden gem of a destination and people will find out about its charm very soon.  NOW is the time to go.

#8 ~ Puerto Rican cuisine is the best. 

Sample some of the tastiest food in the world.  A multicultural fusion of ingredients and cooking methods, creating a cuisine known as cocina criolla. You will return with a couple of extra pounds, maybe more.  But, it will all be worth it. HERE are my favorites (pictures included).

Puerto Rico is the rum capital of the world.   The production of Rum has been integral to the economy of Puerto Rico since the 18th Century.  About 70% of the Rum consumed in the United States is produced in Puerto Rico. They know Rum!

#10 ~ To sip on the local light beer, Medalla. 

The local light beer, Medalla, is refreshing, tasty, and lo-cal.  (This may be the only thing lo-cal that you will find on the island). 

#11 ~ The music. 

Loud, a bit rambunctious, fun, and addicting. 

#12 ~ The weather.

Puerto Rico provides an endless summer with perpetual beach weather.

#13 ~ There are no venomous snakes.

You got that, right? There are NO venomous snakes in Puerto Rico. Well, not 100% true. The only venomous snake in Puerto Rico is the Puerto Rican Racer, which is said to be somewhere between venomous and non-venomous. I would, however, stay away from any snake, venomous or not.

#14 ~ Experience multiple wonders of nature.

The bio bay, caves, reefs, waterfalls, and the rainforest; all on one dreamy little island.

#15 ~ The coffee.

Puerto Rican coffee has Starbucks beat by miles.

You may recall from history class, a famous Italian explorer by the name of Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico and claimed the territory for Spain in 1493. He named the island San Juan Batista after John the Baptist. The town was named Puerto Rico “rich port” because of the location and the abundance of natural resources, specifically gold. Eventually, those named were reversed, and the island remained Puerto Rico, with its capital, San Juan.

Juan Ponce de León became the first Governor in 1508, on behalf of the Spanish Empire. The island was under Spanish rule for four centuries. In 1898, nearing the end of the Spanish-American War, Spain gave control of the territory over to America.

Fast forward to the present. Puerto Rico is considered a Commonwealth of the United States. It is not part of a state, and it is not a state itself. However, all Puerto Ricans are United States Citizens. They have held US Citizenship for over 100 years. However, Puerto Ricans do not have voting representation in US Congress, AND they do not have the right of an electoral vote for the President of the United States.

Colorful, loud, fun, casual, vibrant, warm, and friendly. And that is just the beginning.

The culture of Puerto Rico is a mix of Taíno, Spanish, African, and now American influences. Beginning with the intermingling of the Spanish and Taíno, add the imported slaves from Africa, then Italians and French arrived.

Americans began sneaking over in the late 1800s. In the ’60s, Cuban’s freeing themselves from Communism arrived, and lately, citizens from the Dominican are coming over for a better economic life.

Wow, imagine all of that in one culture?

• Location ~ Located in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands.
• Size ~ 3,515 square miles.
• Population ~ 3,294,626 (as of July, 2018).
• Elevation ~ The lowest point is sea level; the highest point is Cerro de Punta 1,338m.
• Climate ~ Tropical with an average temperature of 80 degrees F year-round ( in the lower area). Up in the mountains, the average temperature is a bit lower at 70 degrees F year-round.
• Natural wonders ~ Bioilluminescent bays, rainforest, caves, reefs, waterfalls, rivers, and, of course, blissful beaches.

Hurricane Maria has been labeled the most devastating storm in the modern history of Puerto Rico. On September 20, 2017, Maria swept through the island demolishing everything in her path. The entire population lost access to power. Thousands of homes were destroyed, roads washed away, and agriculture was decimated.

Over 3000 deaths have been confirmed due to the effects of this treacherous storm; lack of access to electricity, medical care, and clean water. Hurricane Maria caused over $80 billion in damages. The island is bravely recovering and getting better every day.

Many families depend on tourism as their main source of income to recuperate what they have lost. So, imagine this, sipping on a Mojito (made with Puerto Rican Rum, of course), eating authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, catching some rays on the pool deck of a newly renovated resort, and giving back to a struggling economy all at once. Everyone wins!

In addition to contributing to the economy, you may wish to spend part of your time giving back to the recovery effort of Puerto Rico. There are multiple ways to accomplish this listed below.

Traveling to Puerto Rico from anywhere in the United States is rather easy. There is a direct flight from Orlando and Miami, Florida that is less than three hours. There is a direct flight from New York, as well that is 3 1/2 hours.

Once you land in Puerto Rico, grab your bags and walk over to the car rental area. A quick pick up of a Jeep and you are rolling. Jeeps are perfect as the roads are rough these days. Jeeps are rugged enough to handle the bumps and holes. Reserve a car beforehand, if you can.

There are three main areas in San Juan that are great to stay for visitors of the island: Condado, Isla Verde, and Old San Juan. Your choice of neighborhood depends on your taste and what you want access to.

Stay in Condado.

Condado is the perfect area to stay if you love fashionable shops, lively bistros, and vibrant nightlife, all within walking distance. Plus, Old San Juan is only about two miles from the Condado area. However, there is typically lots of traffic on the way, so driving may take about fifteen minutes.

The beach in the Condado area is kinda rough from a family traveler’s point of view, however, the Condado lagoon is wondrous. You can rent stand-up paddleboards, go kayaking, or swim with the manatees in clear and calm waters. Take a jog or go for a walk listening to your favorite podcast around the lagoon.

In the Condado area, there are multiple hotels and resorts including the family-friendly and adult playground of Marriot San Juan Resort and Stellaris Casino . The new Serafina Beach Hotel is described on the Website as “a boutique hotel in Puerto Rico with sexy & playful beach house-chic vibes.” And La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort (another Marriott Property) that boasts “a lifestyle beach resort and nightlife destination.” They all seem irresistible.

Stay in Isla Verde.

Inevitably, Isla Verde always wins in my world. Coconut tree-lined beaches, family-friendly vibe, close in proximity to the airport, and about 20 minutes from El Yunque National Rainforest.

We stayed for years at The Intercontinental in Isla Verde. However, The Intercontinental is currently closed, undergoing extensive renovations. The Ritz in Isla Verde is closed, as well. So, we stayed next door at El San Juan Hotel, a Curio Collection Hotel by Hilton . There are multiple hotels directly on the beach in this area including Water Beach Club Hotel , Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort .

The El San Juan Hotel is a dream. We booked a room directly on the beach. I was serenaded by coquis as I drifted off into a peaceful slumber every night. Everything about this newly renovated hotel is top-notch – the room, the welcoming staff, the impeccable grounds, the pool, and then the food and drink.

If you stay in Old San Juan, you get the blue cobblestones at your doorstep, rich history, and culture, delectable food and drink choices. Plus, you are across San Juan Bay from the Bacardi Distillery (which is a must, by the way). However, there is no beach.

The most charming hotel in Old San Juan is the Hotel El Convento. The Website states that Hotel El Convento is “just steps from historic landmarks and nightlife. Old world charm and elegance meet contemporary comfort and luxury at the El Convento.” Nothing else needs to be said, except that I want to stay here next visit.

There are other hotels in the area of Old San Juan including the Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel (another Marriott property), La Terraza de Old San Juan , and Hotel Milano , in the heart of Old San Juan.

El Morro ~ Castillo San Felipe del Morro (El Morro) is a majestic military structure guarding the entrance of San Juan Harbor. El Morro is one of the most recognized images of Puerto Rico and is an absolute must for any travel to Puerto Rico. Old San Juan ~ The perfectly preserved Spanish colonial district is a feast for the eyes and offers many fun things to do in Puerto Rico with kids of all ages. Old San Juan is known for its combination of history, art, architecture, culture, flavor, and shopping.  And of course, some of the best Instagrammable spots you will find on the planet!  Another absolute must for your vacation in Puerto Rico. El Parque de las Palomas.  ~ One of Puerto Rico’s most famous landmarks is Paloma Park, located at the end of Calle Cristo. Tourists flock here to feed the pigeons free to roam in this urban park; there are thousands of them. Purchase dried corn from the vendors, and the pigeons become your best friend. Kids love this up close and personal experience. And the view of the Bay of San Juan is breathtaking.  

El Yunque National Rainforest ~ Travel from the beaches of San Juan to the stunning tropical rainforest of El Yunque National Forest in less than an hour. The tropical forest boasts hundreds of acres with streams, waterfalls, and hiking trails. Kids will be amazed by the different species of plants and animals they can find here, and parents will love the surrounding views of this jungle wonderland.

El Yunque was decimated by Hurricane Maria and there is still a massive clean-up in progress. A well-spent $4 at the Visitor’s Center will provide you with the information you need regarding which trails are accessible.

A Relaxing Day at the Beach ~ A relaxing beach day is in order after touring El Morro (inside and out), walking the vibrant streets of Old San Juan, and hiking the rain forest. So many beaches, so little time.

Plaza and a Movie ~ The perfect break from the heat and humidity of the island of Puerto Rico is a day at Plaza Las Americas (“Plaza” in local lingo).

Kayak the Biobay ~ Kayaking the bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico is simply a magical adventure. There are three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico.  Mosquito Bay, in Vieques Island, Puerto Rico is considered the brightest bio bay in the world.  There are two bioluminescent bays on the main island, in Fajardo and La Parguera. We booked a kayaking tour with Viator , and they did all of the work for us.

Camuy Caves ~ Camuy River Cave Park is a natural attraction boasting one of the largest cave networks in the world.  Another unique adventure in Puerto Rico that is just WOW!

Casa Bacardi Tours and Tastings ~ We finally put a checkmark for touring Casa Bacardi, although there have been plenty of rum tours at my house over the years. Catch the Old San Juan Ferry ($0.50) at Pier #2 to get to Cataño. A taxi will take you to Casa Bacardi. We took the kids and they loved it, too. Of course, we did not opt for the tasting tour, unfortunately. You can book ahead of time a Casa Bacardi Rum Tour with Cocktail Class and Old San Juan Panoramic Drive with Viator.

Jet Ski Tour in Isla Verde ~ Isla Verde Beach is always a family favorite for exercising, lounging, and dining. But, the beach has about every water sports opportunity you can think of on a tropical island.

The Jet Ski Tour will take you down the stunning coastline all the way to the San Juan Lagoon where you may spot a manatee or two.

Horseback Riding ~ Hacienda Campo Rico is about fifteen minutes from San Juan and my favorite trail ride on the main island. Hacienda Campo Rico has several additional activities to choose from.

If you wish not to partake in any of them, you can relax at El Mojito Bar with TVs, an ice-cold Medalla, and stunning views of the valley.  They have ATV rides, Archery Tag (didn’t know this was a thing), and ziplining.  They also provide an eco-tour of the Plantation. Find out more HERE .

Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico ~  Absorb yourself in local art in this contemporary art museum in Santurce, filled with sculptures and paintings and the host of concerts and festivals. Perfect for a rainy day or when you need a break from the sun.

Here is a list of popular museums to visit on a rainy day or if you need a break from the heat.

• Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico.  ~ Open Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. $5 donation for your visit.
• Museo del Nino.  ~ A museum to provide kids with an interactive, hands-on way of exploring Puerto Rican history. It’s open from Friday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm.
• Museo de la Música Puertorriqueña.  ~ This museum, located in Ponce, showcases the work of Puerto Rican composers with a strong focus on the development of the music. It’s open Wednesday to Sunday from 8:30-3:30.
• The National Gallery   ~ This art gallery is the perfect place to learn about Puerto Rico’s history and culture through its most prized possessions, all of the original paintings by Puerto Rican artists, such as Francisco Oller and Jose Campeche. 
• The Sports Museum.  ~ Museo del Deporte de Puerto Rico, considered the top five best sports museums globally, covers sports memorabilia from athletes from Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Watch a Baseball Game.  ~ Did you know Puerto Rico has a baseball league? Four teams play in the summer — Conquistadores, Pelicanos, Peregrinos, and Tainos. And these teams play in the winter — Creoles, Giants, Indians, Crabbers, and Athenians.

Puerto Rican Cuisine ~ It may seem funny for some to hear food referred to as an “attraction.”  But hear me out on this. Yes, Puerto Rico is a beautiful island filled with stunning beaches, nature, history, happy and friendly people, lively music, and vibrant colors.  But, don’t miss out on the unique cuisine of the island. H ERE are my favorites .

Cave Tubing ~ Tanamá River Adventures offers not only cave tubing, but hiking, swimming, cliff jumping, and rappelling. The Tanamá River is about an hour and a half drive from San Juan. Cave tubing? I never thought I’d see the day, but I did it. And it was one of the most fun, unique (and somewhat challenging) experiences that I have ever had. Loved it and I highly recommend you try it out.

Take a Cool Cave Tour ~ The caves at Camuy River Cave Park were formed over tens of thousands of years, and you can join a guided tour that will take you through caverns and underground rivers. The Camuy Caves are about an hour and twenty-minute drive from San Juan, Puerto Rico. They have re-opened since the devastation of Hurricane Maria, and you will need a reservation to visit.

Condado Lagoon. ~ Stand Up Paddleboard, kayak, or take a waterbike tour of the Condado Lagoon, and maybe you’ll see a manatee or two.

Piñones ~ Off the beaten path and VERY local. Piñones is about twenty minutes from San Juan. Full of life, authentic Puerto Rican food, and the cheapest beer. Rent a bike for $10 from COPI which is located across Boca de Congrejos Bridge (look for the green fence on the right). Cycle down the boardwalk bordering the ocean, worlds away from the bustle of San Juan.

Go On a Walking Food Tour. ~ A walking food tour is more for tweens or teens, especially food lovers. Taste Puerto Rican Coffee, grab some ice cream and gather up ingredients at the local market for the Mofongo that you are going to learn how to make yourself. And they teach you how to make an authentic Mojito.

San Juan Bay Sunset ~ After your full day of exploring charming and historic Old San Juan, sail off into an unforgettable sunset in San Juan Bay on The Amazing Grace. You can book a sail on this topsail schooner through Viator , and take in the view of Old San Juan from the bay. Enjoy some cocktails, snacks, and top it off with the San Juan Bay Sunset.

Zipline ~ There are numerous zipline adventure offerings in Puerto Rico, including Hacienda Campo Rico, which is about a fifteen-minute drive from San Juan. However, if you are a massive adrenaline junkie, check out the ToroVerde Zipline Adventure in the mountains of Orocovis, Puerto Rico. ToroVerde is the largest aerial adventure park in the Americas with the longest zipline on earth (certified by Guinness Book of World Records).  Not for me, but I know you are out there. Here is the WEBSITE . I can’t wait to see the pictures.

Luquillo ~ Known as La Capital del Sol (the sun capital), Luquillo sits between El Yunque National Rainforest and the Atlantic on the Northeast coast of Puerto Rico. With glorious beaches and kiosks filled with authentic Puerto Rican delights, Luquillo is a must. Stop by after your morning of hiking El Yunque for a relaxing stroll on the beach and some refreshments. Have a picnic on one of the beaches along “El Condado,” build sand castles, explore tide pools, play paddle ball, or go for a swim.

Arecibo ~ About an hour from San Juan, Arecibo is home to the world’s largest radio telescope along with captivating vistas, and a landscape characterized by beaches, mountains, sinkholes, and one of the most mesmerizing views on the island, Cueva Ventana. Visit the Arecibo lighthouse, hike through the Cambalache State Forest, tour Casa Ulanga, a historic colonial building, or relax on a boat gliding through Lago Dos Bocas.

Save your appetite for one of our favorite restaurants, Salitre Mesón Costero . Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Salitre is Arecibo’s most famous restaurant, specializing in fresh, locally caught seafood in dishes like paella and mofongo. The menu is worth a read, check it out on their WEBSITE HERE . *Salitre is not open on Mondays or Tuesdays.*

Parque de Bombas  ~ El Parque de Bombas is considered the oldest municipal fire station in the Western Hemisphere and is one of the island’s most instagrammable spots. Located in Ponce and built in 1803, it’s still used to fight fires today and has been a significant part of Puerto Rican culture through the years. El Parque de Bombas was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Visitors will find an array of outdoor art, historic buildings, and memorials within its walls.

Daytrip to Culebra or Vieques ~ It is hard for me to explain in a few lines the beauty of these two unique islands off of the east coast of Puerto Rico. Known as The Puerto Rican Virgin Islands, Culebra and Vieques are more than worthy of a day trip.

We have spent weeks at a time on both of these islands, both so different and both with so much to give. Vieques, with the brightest bio bay in the world. Culebra, with Flamenco Beach, considered the best beach in the world. Cultural landmarks, a foodie’s paradise, and even a black sand beach. I could go on and on.

This is a great guide to Puerto Rico. Not sure I would ever travel there but I love how well you’ve covered everything. Safety-wise, are there any concerns?

Same as many places. We always stay in a populated area. There is plenty of police presence in most areas where tourist stay. And, be smart about not looking showy and not showing off expensive things. AND stay aware of your surroundings. We have never had an issue and we are there once or twice a year.

This was by far one of the best travel blogs I have read and it so happens my husband and I are planning a trip to Puerto Rico next February! Thanks for all this great information.

This is such a helpful, detailed guide! We recently visited PR and loved seeing Umbrella street, trying a pina colada and enjoyed a food tour. So much to do there!

Fun Activities for Kids in Puerto Rico

It's not hard to imagine a great day with the kids when you're on the island of Puerto Rico . Heading to the nearest beach will probably do the trick, but there's more to kid-friendly Puerto Rico than sandcastles and waves. Not everyone enjoys the beach, or if your visit coincides with bad weather you'll likely need a backup plan.

The island offers various types of historical, cultural, and outdoor activities for all different ages. Whether they're exploring a museum or exploring underwater, your kids will never get bored in Puerto Rico.

Museo Del Niño

Young kids normally don't get too excited about visiting a museum, but the Museo del Niño , or Children's Museum, is a worthwhile exception. Located in the town of Carolina about 20-minutes outside of San Juan, the Museo del Niño is a world that blends learning and entertainment specifically designed for little ones.

Some of the kid-friendly exhibitions include learning about magnets; playing with different instruments; and a "mini-city" for kids to make believe they are firefighters, bankers, supermarket clerks, or whatever they can imagine. Kids can learn while having fun through the many interactive exhibits that focus on alternative energy and conservation.

The museum is closed every Monday and Tuesday.

Go visit El Morro on a Sunday and you'll likely find the large green plaza in front of it filled with families picnicking and the skies above filled with colorful kites. Kite flying is a popular pastime here, and if you've dragged the kids out on a day of "adult" sightseeing this can serve as a nice reward. You can purchase kites (called chiringas in Puerto Rican Spanish) at vendors on the street right on the corner of Norzagaray Street at the entrance to the fort grounds. The fort, designated a National Historic Site by the U.S. government, makes for a lovely visual backdrop.

Located in Guaynabo, Scuba Dogs is so named because they claim to be the "Diver's Best Friends." Cute, eh? What's even cuter is Scubadoo Club, Puerto Rico's only scuba kids club for children aged 8 through 14. The training program includes:

• One day of scuba diving
• Scuba gear rental
• Educational materials
• PADI Seal Team certifications

Scuba Dogs also offers swimming lessons for all ages, including toddlers.

Plaza Las Américas

The mall is a common getaway to take the kids, whether you're on vacation or just getting out of your house. But Plaza Las Américas , the largest mall in the Caribbean and second largest in Latin America, offers entertainment options besides shopping and the cinema.

Time Out is a video arcade that's popular with young kids and teenagers. You likely didn't travel to an island to play video games, but when kids get tired of the beach or the weather is limiting, an arcade can be a godsend.

For the youngest members of the family, there is also a children's play area just outside the Sear's exit into the mall designed for children aged 5 and under.

Meet Puerto Rico

Paseo La Princesa, the lovely promenade at the foot of Old San Juan, is a busy place and a great destination for families, romantics, and people looking to mingle. There is almost always something going on here, whether it's a traditional Lei Lo Lai dance performance or just a gathering of locals and tourists soaking in the beauty of the magnificent Raíces (“Roots”) Fountain.

But on the third Sunday of every month, Paseo La Princesa caters to children, hosting an event called Teatro de los Niños , or "Children’s Theater." Held in the afternoon, this free event includes games, live music, clowns, puppet shows, and other treats for kids.

Coqui Water Park

This kid-friendly activity in Puerto Rico is also the most exclusive. The Coqui Water Park in Fajardo is the first-ever water park along the banks of the Caribbean and overlooking the Atlantic. Almost 2.5 acres, the park includes waterfalls, rapids, a jungle rope bridge, a 40-foot vertical drop, and a 26-foot serpentine flume body slide.

There's only one catch: the park is open only to guests of the El Conquistador Resort & Golden Door Spa. It's the culmination of a massive renovation project undertaken by the hotel, but it also puts the hotel a notch above anything else on the island when it comes to entertainment.

Albergue Olímpico

The Albergue Olímpico in Salinas is off the beaten path for San Juaneros (it's less than an hour from the capital and about a half hour from Ponce), but it's also the only facility of its kind in Puerto Rico. An outdoor recreation center with plenty of aquatic entertainment, the focus here is sport, fun, and education.

More than just a gym, the Albergue Olímpico contains swimming pools and water parks; baseball, softball, and soccer fields; miniature golf; and rock climbing, all with tropical rainforests as the backdrop to your activities. It's a place where the whole family can enjoy a day out.

Five Top Kid-Friendly Excursions in Puerto Rico

Many friends I know who’ve been to Puerto Rico think it’s all about piña coladas and hotel spa treatments. Not so! There are oodles to do outside resort walls that kids and adults flip for. Here, my top five picks for family fun on the island that boasts it all-beaches, deserts, caves, rivers and a rain forest.

Old San Juan

Viejo San Juan (as locals know it) is a seven-square-block area made of cobblestone streets and bursting with pigeon-filled plazas. Quaint and charming-it reminds me more of Paris than an old Caribbean port.  It’s a perfect place to stroll with kids.

There are parks and plazas around practically every corner and the area’s not hurting for kid-friendly-but authentic-food. Head straight for El Morro , a fort surrounded by ginormous stone walls and cannons. Initially built in 1540, it’s pretty much a maze filled with tunnels, dungeons, ramps and secret passageways. Bring spare change to buy a kite to fly on its vast grassy area, where kids can run free and you can savor the fabulous views of San Juan Bay.

A rainforest in the United States-who knew? El Yunque National Forest is the one and only and-lucky for us-it’s super-accessible. Only an hour from San Juan, it gives you the feel of being in the thick of the jungle. You can drive right in and park within just a few steps of plenty of cool observation areas, waterfalls, hiking trails and lookout points.

There’s also a welcome center to get a better grip on what to see. Kids will get a huge thrill out of all the coquis, tree frogs that make non-stop “ko-key” noises. Keep your eyes peeled for the Puerto Rican parrot, one of the most endangered birds in the world, but don’t hold your breath-spotting one isn’t a sure thing. Bring rain gear-it is, after all, a rainforest and 100 billion gallons of rainwater is dumped on it every year.

Drive to the southern side of the island to find calmer waters-this half is on the Caribbean Sea, whereas the northern side is on the Atlantic Ocean-and a genuine feel for local living. Go to town square first, for the Old Ponce Firehouse and Museum (Parque de Bombas), a way-cool firehouse that’s painted with bold red and black stripes (a surefire kids’ attention-grabber).

Hit it on a Sunday night and you’ll be treated to a free concert, courtesy of the municipal band. After tromping around the firehouse, walk over to Ponce’s boardwalk, aka La Guancha Paseo Tablado, for good local eats and a ferry ride to Coffin Island, which has gorgeous beaches and an old lighthouse. Rio Camuy Cave Park

The cool factor at these caves is through the roof-it’s the third-largest cave system in the world, formed more than a million years ago. Translation: Convincing kids to visit is as good as done. The trails take you 200 feet down into the earth.

You can take a trolley ride through the caves and sinkholes, which have some odd types of fish (they’re blind!), plenty of bats and tons of ferns. Go on your own or pre-arrange a guided tour; either is an adventure. This isn’t just a way to kill an hour-plan on an entire day. Bring a picnic lunch, a camera to record all those crazy stalactites and stalagmites, and some extra coin for souvenirs. Click here for more info.

Yes, my favorite Puerto Rican adventures are outside hotel walls. But truth be told, some of the best family resorts in the world are in Puerto Rico, so why not sink your teeth into them? Most offer multiple pools, gobs of beach activities, lively family events, a fully equipped recreation center and a daily kids’ club, so spending a few days on the property is just plain good judgment!

My suggestion: Alternate between active excursions and leisurely resort days and you’ll go home relaxed, refreshed and revived.

Hi Bridget, I checked with our Caribbean Family Travel Advisor and she said the Ritz San Juan is lovely and they have a full Ritz Kids’ program http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/puerto-rico/san-juan/area-activities/ritz-kids . There are many great restaurants in San Juan, so from that perspective, you will have access to a wide variety of options in this location. She also mentioned http://www.wyndhamriomar.com/ but has not stayed here for a few years, so keep that in mind … you’d want to look up current reviews. Amie

Travel with Kids: A Family-Friendly Puerto Rico Itinerary

When my mom mentioned retirement, she also brought up taking a trip with the whole family – including six kids ages 6 through 13. She wanted to go somewhere warm, on the ocean, safe, no passports needed with plenty of activities for all ages. After some research and discussion, we were going to celebrate her retirement from 50 years of cutting hair with a 14-person trip to Puerto Rico.

The vacation was absolutely epic and I immediately looked forward to sharing our experiences here on the blog since we found it hard to locate details about so many parts of Puerto Rico, especially when it came to visiting with children. So here it is – our 5-day itinerary with tips, details, and suggestions to consider when planning your adventure to Puerto Rico with kids in tow.

General Info Puerto Rico is an island and U.S. territory located in the Caribbean on the Atlantic Ocean. It hosts 300 miles of beaches, three of the world’s five bioluminescent bays, the second longest zipline in the world, beautiful views, incredible sunsets, and the only tropical rainforest in America. The official languages of Puerto Rico are English and Spanish and their currency is U.S. dollar. There is no passport needed for United States citizens to visit Puerto Rico and the best months to visit are mid-April through June (winter is busy, summer is rainy, fall is hurricane season).

Direct and non-stop flights area available to Puerto Rico from major U.S. cities, but price definitely prevented us from choosing that option. We were traveling from MSP to SJU –the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan – and wound up choosing a Delta flight after a rescheduling debacle with JetBlue.

If you can get a window seat, do it. The views over Puerto Rico are beautiful. Our flights took us to New York and then SJU with a total travel time (with layover) of 7 hours. The way back was a similar time but the layover was in Atlanta.

Lodging Before we got too far into planning our trip, we wanted to make sure we could find a place that could hold all 14 of us and meet most of the criteria. We wound up renting this beautiful VRBO on the ocean. It was located in Loiza, a very local and smaller town 30 minutes from the airport and about 45 minutes east of San Juan and 25 minutes west of Luquillo Beach. The house was spectacular – with a beach out the door, a pool (that got used more than the ocean), plenty of bedrooms, seating, and space for 14 people to not be on top of each other. And because the weather is always beautiful, we spent most of our time at the house on the patio…because that is so not a Minnesota-in-March thing to do. Jacob the owner was super cool and works very hard to help build up his community and its people.

Airbnb and VRBO offer plenty of options for lodging for larger parties. If you have a smaller group, you might want to consider doing an all-inclusive or hotel/resort closer to San Juan or near Luquillo Beach, depending on what your plans are. Discover Puerto Rico suggests these family-friendly resorts if you are looking to just keep it simple. Also, groceries – our house offered shopping and delivery for a fee, but their local markets DO have free order and pickup if that’s something you’re interested in doing. Order your groceries a couple days before your arrival and swing by to grab them when your plane lands. The Pueblo Supermarket is 8 minutes from SJU and offers pickup service.

Hot Tip: RENT A CAR. The island is spread out and even though we stuck to one fraction of the island, getting from A to B would not have been an easy feat without a rental car. Unless you’re staying directly in San Juan the entire time, I would definitely rent a car. We rented from Enterprise right at the airport. It was convenient, quick, and we got the minivan we hoped for (I know we’re cool. You don’t have to tell me.) RideShare options are not available once you leave the main city and driving is just like at home, except gas prices are listed by the liter – not the gallon.

Whenever we drove from spot to spot, my husband insisted we try to do the ocean view road instead of the main interstate. Usually the travel time was relatively equal, so why not see turquoise waters out your window, right? The roads were mostly good, albeit bumpy and sometimes quite narrow. Look for “speed humps” when in more rural areas, and yes, you will likely see stray cats, dogs, horses, cows, and chickens on your ventures. While it was hard to see dogs and cats wandering the cities, we actually saw less than I expected and Puerto Rico has many rescues and efforts in place to help protect and save these animals.

So…how did we spend our days in Puerto Rico? Here’s the breakdown :

• Luquillo Beach and Bioluminescent Bay
• Old San Juan
• Zip Lining at Toro Verde Adventure Park
• Catamaran and Snorkeling Vieques
• El Yunque Rainforest

Day One: Luquillo Beach and Bioluminescent Bay

Luquillo Beach Exhausted from travel, we wanted our first full day to be relaxing. And what says relaxation more than a day at the beach? With its calm turquoise waters and plentiful palm trees, Luquillo Beach is an easy win for families – especially with its food kiosks and local vendors. We visited Luquillo twice on our trip actually. The first time we parked further west than the main beach entrance and was directly in front of the strip of food and shopping kiosks. While the beach area here was not as beautiful, it was fun to be close to the row of vendors (and we saw a giant iguana cross through the parking lot and met a parrot named Todos who happily charged us for photos with the kids).

The kiosks were ok. We found it a little difficult to decide on food for all ages, but the variety was nice. The highlights were the empanadas, the homemade tacos, the drink-in-a-pineapple, and the fact that you could walk the kiosk strip with a Medalla Light (the local lager – a super delightful treat for basic beer lovers). We wound up grabbing food from different places and hunkered down at a large table in the back of one of the kiosks. The general vibe felt a bit chaotic, honestly. But we found some cute souvenirs and definitely enjoyed the beach time.

Hot Tip: CHOOSE YOUR TIME WISELY. We noticed a lot of islanders don’t show up to the beach (or anywhere, for that matter) earlier than noon, but that’s wise because the hottest part of the day is around 3pm (we were here late March). So you can choose – go early for an emptier beach but not as much heat or go later for a busier beach and tons of sun.

The second visit to the beach we went to the main beach (parking was $4/car), also called La Monserrate Beach, on a Sunday. Yes, it was busy. But no, it was not annoyingly busy. The walk from the lot was easy enough and between 12 of us, we were able to carry our beach chairs, towels, sand toys, sunscreen, life jackets, and beach bags. We did not need water shoes at Luquillo and didn’t see a lot of people snorkeling in the main beach area The highlight was the concession stand right on the main beach where my newly-retired mother bought everyone strawberry smoothies (kids) and piña coladas (adults). They even came with a cute drink umbrella!

Everywhere seemed to accept credit cards (but bring change and hand sanitizer for the bathroom) and all the people on the beach were friendly and considerate of space and belongings. The water was warm too, which was just a lovely bonus. Do note that riptides can be a thing at all beaches along the north coast and the beaches are marked with colored flags. Green means “yup, come swim” while Red means “stay away.” Follow these rules please. The ocean is no joke. Oh, and they had bathrooms you could use for a small fee (I believe it was $.50/person).

Bioluminescent Bay Puerto Rico is home to three of the world’s five bioluminescent bays. What is it? A “bio bay” is a body of water where microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates grow in quantities large enough to produce a “glow-in-the-dark” effect when you touch or move them – like a sea of stars. Literally.

Doing a bio bay was high on our list of “want to dos” but the more we read about them, we just didn’t know if they were in the cards with six smaller children. We quickly eliminated the Mosquito Bay option since that required tons of logistics (a ferry ride and a night on the island of Vieques) and the La Parguera Bay is in the opposite corner of Puerto Rico, so we landed on Laguna Grande in the city of Fajardo. Fajardo is a one hour drive from San Juan in the northeast corner of the island and is the most visited bay on the island due to ease of proximity.

Our family found a tour through Pure Adventure (same tour company we used for the catamaran) and we are so happy we booked with them. Here’s the general deets if you’re considering this bio bay tour:

• Cost is $58/per person
• Tours start at either 6pm or 8pm and last two hours (including the short lesson beforehand). We did the 8pm tour because the sky would be darker. It definitely made for a spookier kayak ride through the narrow lagoon.
• Provided kayaks are all two-person. We partnered one adult with one child each. It worked out nicely since they say the weight limit per kayak is 400 pounds. They also provide life jackets (even though the water in the narrow waterway was only about 3 feet deep).
• Children must be at least six years old to do the tour. And keep in mind, the smaller the kid, the less they can help paddle. And that can get hard when….
• the kayak ride is 1.5 miles out and 1.5 miles back – through narrow waters surrounded by trees. I thought it was awesome. My 8-year old niece thought it was a little scary. The kayaks have lights on the back so you can stay with your group. I’d say they sent about a 15 or 20 kayaks out with our group so it was easy to stay together, but sometimes proved difficult to paddle through in a single file line without running into each other.
• We wore shorts and t-shirts with a water shirt over top. We got wet from sitting in the kayak and splashing water on ourselves, but not soaked by any means. Waterproof shoes were good (we wore our crocs) and we all actually got super sweaty paddling three miles so the water felt amazing! Also packed pajamas for the kids to change in to when we got back to the car.
• Don’t expect to take any amazing pictures. In fact, they advise you leave keys and cameras behind at the main desk before heading out. I brought a dry bag and did bring my camera but was too busy paddling to even get it out. This was one of those “remember with your mind” adventures.
• Bring bug spray in case you need it. We had zero bugs the night we went, but I’ve heard horror stories about mosquitos on these tours.
• Extreme bioluminescence is not guaranteed. Depending on the moon, the water activity, and other factors, sometimes the brightness of the water can be underwhelming. Our guide had us go under a large black tarp to see the colors more strongly and I was happy about that since the bay was not on its highest wattage.
• The guides were great – very sweet, knowledgeable, and helpful.

Hot Tip: KNOW YOUR CROWD I am definitely happy we took this excursion, but it was not the easiest thing I’ve ever done with kids. With young ones, I’d probably recommend the earlier tour. Come ready to work hard and you shall be rewarded with snacks and a good night’s sleep at the end of the day.

Day Two: Old San Juan

Before our trip I researched Old San Juan like it was my job. By the time we headed out to see it with our own eyes, I was so pumped I nearly passed out. I LOVE old towns with rugged (not stroller-friendly) cobblestone roads, beautiful architecture, tall white churches, a rich history, and a story to tell. Old San Juan did not disappoint. In fact, we revisited on our last day because one day proved not to be enough for our crew.

What makes it so cool? Well, the pastel-colored buildings for one. The iconic landmarks to visit for two. The fact that the city protrudes into the ocean for three. It’s the perfect mix of old and modern with good food, great shopping, gorgeous sights, and busy streets.

Our day started with finding parking. We visited on a non-weekend, which was helpful to avoid busyness. The ramps are pretty easy to find if you search your Google Maps and cost next to nothing and no matter where you park in Old San Juan, the walk to the other side is no more than 20 minutes. Keep in mind, it can feel like a hilly city in parts, so hit the side of the streets with shade on hot days. We parked in this ramp for the curious. It was close to the cruise ship port so there were cute little snack stands (try the dried plantains) right by the water and it felt safe and clean.

Hot Tip: PUBLIC BATHROOMS ARE NOT APLENTY. Be sure to time your bathroom visits. There is a nice public bathroom near the cruise ship port and a few sprinkled throughout businesses and in the fort area, but be prepared to purchase food or drink for bathroom access.

Notable places to visit:

• Café Cuatro Sombras – Start your day with the best latte I’ve ever had. Watch them grind the beans, sit in their adorable outdoor chairs, or take it to go. Oh, and use their nice bathroom. Those are few and far between in Old San Juan.
• Parque de las Palomas (Pigeon Park) – I thought this small concrete park near Fortaleza Street would have a couple cute pigeons walking around looking for food. Nope. I could not have been more wrong. You walk under a gateway into a very Manhattenesque park bench-laden alley area to see hundreds of these happy well-fed birds. And you bet your butt they will land on you – on your head, on your shoulders, on your feet, on your arms. Depending on who you are (my brother-in-law was disgusted and kept his distance overlooking the water) you could stand there forever mingling with cheerful pigeons just waiting for some dried corn. Corn is sold by the street vendor right inside the park and it is a blast feeding them. My nieces have sensitive skin and got pretty scratched up from pigeon toenails, but they all said it was worth it. Maybe a long sleeve shirt just for this moment would be handy. And watch out for poop. I mean, you can’t really avoid it so I don’t know why I even wrote that, but there will be poop. Oh yes, there will be poop.
• Anita’s Gelato – Anita really is la Mama del Gelato. Worth. The. Calories. We stood in line maybe 10 minutes to get our delicious scoops of this nummy sweet goodness and I would do it again in a heartbeat. There had to have been 25+ flavors to choose from, many unique (don’t get just one scoop!). They have a small seating area in the back and a bathroom so depending on the crowds, it’s a great place to cool off and scarf. And the prices were on par for what you’d pay at a Coldstone.

• Calle de la Fortaleza – If you follow anyone on Instagram who has been to Puerto Rico, you will surely see Fortaleza Street on their feed. Namely, you will see its hanging umbrellas or whatever seasonal street art ceilings the path leading up to the governor’s palace. We were there for colorful umbrellas – which made my day! Deceiving in photos, it’s not that long a street and you cannot actually walk on it, but you can stand in front of it and take your photos. This is classic Puerto Rico and you won’t want to miss it.
• Pizza Pirata – When six kids get hot and hungry, you feed them immediately. Many of the restaurants in Old San Juan are a bit tighter on space but we found the open air of Pizza Pirata to be perfect for our group for a peaceful and filling lunch. I have to say, we were all pleasantly surprised by how delicious the wood-fired pizzas were. The Luna was the winner (so many cheeses) and the kids ate until their hearts content. It’s located right on Fortaleza Street and sold drinks and appetizers as well. Ps. You can walk the streets with a beer in hand. Just sayin’.
• Scryer Rum Barrelhouse and Rooftop – Ok, so this one isn’t for the kids. But adults need to vacation too, right? Scryer was such a cool looking place with a warm rooftop and an awesome cocktail and cigar menu. The vibe was totally Sherlock Holmes meets the cast of Clue and I was so there for it! We got this private sitting room in between floors with couches and space for the kids to play games while we enjoyed our whiskey flights and rum daiquiris. They don’t serve food and the drinks are pricey, but it was all about the experience. You can also schedule a tour (kids are allowed) and it was only $10-$25 for the tour plus tasting (like a billion dollars cheaper than the Bacardi tour).

• Castillo San Felipe del Morro – There are a couple historic forts in Old San Juan but we only visited this one and I was happy with our choice (the other is Castillo San Cristóbal and that’s beautiful looking as well). The forts are more than 500 years old so seeing them is worth it for the history alone. But let’s not forget how cool it is for the kids to play in, on, and around all the cracks and crevices in the old fort. It overlooks the ocean (like, you look out the windows and you’re staring into the blue waters) and you can see how soldiers used the fort to fight and protect what was theirs…cannons included. There was a $10/person fee to enter the fort for anyone over the age of 15. Kids were free. Once you’re in, you can wander around all three levels of winding staircases, hidden “jail cells” (that’s what the kids called them), and towers galore. Watch your kids! There are definitely places on the fort that could be dangerous for adventurous children. We did not let ours step out onto any of the ledges, but they went into the ones with walls and peeked out windows. It was also very windy and not shaded in the fort. Bring snacks (there’s a small gift shop but no food) and use the bathroom if you have to – it’s a nice National Park Service amenity. The fort closes at 4:30pm so be sure to get there well before that. We spent maybe 90 minutes exploring and taking photos and that was plenty for our group. Hot Tip: FLY A KITE. If you have time, fly a kite in the open park in the fort’s front yard of the Fort. We packed a kite but never made time to fly it and I sort of regret it. They also sell kites at local street vendors. The wind is strong so it’s the perfect opportunity.
• Souvenir Shops – If there is one thing there is no shortage of in Old San Juan, it is souvenir shops. Our kids each got some cash from Grandma and boy did they spend it! After awhile it all starts to look the same, but now and again, you’ll find a diamond in the rough. I got myself a Panama hat and a Christmas ornament and am very pleased with the purchases the kids made too (bracelets and boxes and wooden turtles and hats and shirts galore). It’s vacation. Souvenirs are part of the experience.

Before leaving Old San Juan, we made sure we saw the Gate of San Juan (the big red doorway to the city). We did not go down to it, but we took pics from above. We toured a Catholic Church (the Basilica was closed) called Iglesia de San Jose and relaxed in the plaza. We also walked through Save a Gato, which is basically a free range sanctuary space on the streets of San Juan where stray and abandoned cats receive food, drink, and care as available. While it is hard to see stray animals, seeing water dishes and food along the streets for them was pretty cool and very admirable. Check out their website here. There was fro-yo and fountains and more little bars and cantinas than we could handle. Old San Juan stole my heart and it was completely manageable with large groups and kiddos.

Day Three: Zip Lining at Toro Verde Adventure Park

Full Disclosure: This activity is for older kids and is slightly terrifying (says the mom). It hosts the second longest zip line in the world. So we HAD to do it, right?

I can only speak to the tour we did, which was the Toro Pass for $99/person and included all 7 “main” zip lines plus The Beast and The Monster (both of which live up to their name). You can see all other pass options on their website and choose what works best for you.

General details and tips:

• Minimum weight is 100 lbs and max is 270 lbs. to do the zip lines. You must be 4 feet tall and 12 years old.
• Close toed shoes are required. And make sure they’re comfortable to walk in and can get muddy.
• This park is very inland and was a two hour drive for us from our home in Rio Grande. The tour is nearly 3 hours long (start times are 8am, 9am, 10am, and 11am) and the park is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
• My husband wants me to tell you to get gas before you get to the last 30 minutes of the drive. It’s a windy, hairpin-turny adventure and goes up into the Orcovis Mountains (which is actually what you zip line over).
• It will likely rain on you. Just a little bit hopefully, but the likelihood is high. Bring an extra change of clothes and I suggest wearing layers.
• There are parts of the zip line tour that require some hiking and stairs. Like, no joke stairs. So be prepared for that.
• They let me bring my phone and diabetic supplies with me on the zip lines, but they had to be in an on-body and very small waist bag that could zip or close tightly. For obvious reasons.

You’ll want to show up 30 minutes early to sign waivers, etc. You’ll get geared up and sent on your merry way doing one zip line after another until the seven are complete. Each one gets progressively higher and longer so by the time you get to The Beast and The Monster, you’re ready for it. Except that…

you do them on your stomach, facing forward!!!! Yup. Strapped in like Superman. Like a really scared, sushi-rolled, plastic-wrapped Superman. It is not for the faint of heart.

But ya know what? We did it. A mile and a half of forward-facing beauty flying 1,200 feet above the green mountains, creek beds, and rocks. I felt oddly safe and after a mile of soaring, I loosened up and truly enjoyed myself. If you have an adventure-loving kid (or one that just wants to conquer a fear and say they did it), this is worth every minute, every penny, every panic attack. And I was so stinking proud of my 13-year old who is afraid of heights. He did it. I was blown away by his courage. Video proof:

Day Four: Catamaran and Snorkeling Vieques

On day four, we all had to wake up suuuuuuper early to get to our snorkeling tour. I’m talkin’ leave the house by 6:15am with six kids (one who is a teenager – woof!). Know what though? It wound up being one of the best decisions of the trip! Our family used the same tour company as we did for the Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Tour, which provided us a discount of $10 a person for the snorkeling tour and we definitely recommend Pure Adventure for any of these excursions. The staff was SO friendly and helpful and good with the kids. Since only one of the kids had snorkeled before, one of the staffers even gave them a private “lesson” before setting out.

We had originally signed up for the full-day catamaran tour taking us to the island of Culebra (with Flamenco Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world) but the night before, we got word that it was too choppy to go that way so we were switched over to the half-day tour which went to the island of Vieques . Zero complaints whatsoever (plus we got reimbursed for the cost difference) and it actually worked out better since the tour was only 8am-noon instead of 8am-3pm. Honestly, by the time the kids finished the 20-minute boat ride out, the two snorkel spots, and the ride back, they were already pretty exhausted. It was a blessing in disguise (although, yes, I would’ve loved a few hours on Flamenco).

When you arrive at the check-in building, you will place your order for the lunch sandwich you want and sign your waivers. Drive over to the catamaran across the street and climb on board. No shoes allowed on the boat – and bring towels, sunscreen, and a life jacket if you prefer your own (they provide tons of life jackets and floating devices as well). We were lucky with the weather and the sun was in our favor. We first stopped near a beach on one side of Vieques and got to splash around. We could practice snorkeling (we even saw an octopus!), go paddle boarding, or just walk the sand.

After an hour or so, we headed to another spot in more open water. My mom and youngest son weren’t comfortable in that water so they stayed on the boat. The rest of us piled in the water and saw sea turtles, sea urchins, and even a sting ray flat against the sand.

This second leg of snorkeling was choppier and far more difficult. I would say the age for it would be minimum 8 and a good (enough) swimmer. All snorkel gear, lunch, snacks, and drinks are provided.

Hot Tip: MAKE ROOM FOR PALETAS. After we pulled back in to the parking lot, we tipped our staff and changed into dry clothes. I found a sweet little stop that I wanted to be sure I mentioned – Fres K Paleta in Fajardo. It is a small local chain but the paletas were SO FUN! It’s like a creamier popsicle but can be decorated to your liking. The pumpkin spice one was divine and I was also a fan of the S’mores. Kids loved it. Definitely a good stop to break up the trip back home.

Day Five: El Yunque National Forest

There is one standalone tropical rainforest in the United States and it is in Puerto Rico. So of course we had to go!

Hot Tip: Reservations are no longer required! It’s now first come, first served. El Yunque National Rain Forest is about a 45-60 minute drive from San Juan and is free to enter. Reservations used to be required but as of August 2023, that has been lifted and they are no longer necessary. Like most popular attractions, arrive early and as close to open as you can to avoid the crowds and to make sure you have enough time to explore the area. There is a a visitor center that technically sits right outside the park called El Portal Visitor Center . On our trip we decided to skip it, but if you do to it is $8 per adult with kids being free.

As far as planning your time in El Yunque, it is not a huge rainforest, but it holds tons of hiking options for all skill levels. Some people say to wear a swimsuit to the rainforest. My family preferred shorts and tank tops with a long sleeve over in case it rained/got chilly. Then we packed a change of clothes because we knew we were going to hit up the waterfalls.

Bring shoes that can get wet. The hiking was muddy since it rained that morning, but we were grateful for our water shoes when we went into the falls. And I packed a waterproof backpack with my important items in a dry bag in case we got rained on.

How did we navigate the rainforest?

• We started with the Yocahu Tower right inside the entrance. This is simply the tower. You get out, walk to the top of the “Rapunzel Tower” (as our kids called it) and walked back down to the car.
• We drove passt Juan Diego Falls (which is the second stop on the map) because we wanted to get wet last. First things first – the one “big” hike we were making the kids do. We continued to drive the 5-10 minutes until we got to the Mt Britton Trail. Mt Britton was about 2 miles long, mostly uphill, and the end had another tower overlooking the rainforest. I knew they could do it – and they did!
• The paths on Mt Britton trail were narrow but sturdy (mostly not mud or dirt either). The paths are most definitely not stroller-friendly but little legs can handle them. There was plenty to look at, from ferns to snails to frogs. It took us 45 minutes for us to get to the tower and we were all relieved when we arrived. Take it all in. The views at the top were stunning. I could’ve stayed up there all day. The hike back to the car was obviously easier, but slightly slippery.
• Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, and wear layers if the weather looks iffy. It IS the rainforest after all. Some folks bring ponchos (you know, the thing you pack for every vacation but never actually use)
• We got back to the car and decided it was picnic time. There are a couple small rest areas for families to purchase food and drink, use the restroom, or sit at a table to enjoy a pre-made picnic, which is exactly what we did. My husband got a 6-pack of Ocean Lab craft brews for the adults and the kids were in heaven with their PB&Js and crackers. It was much needed and surprisingly delicious.
• Since that’s all we had planned for “real hikes,” our last stop had to be water! Juan Diego Falls seemed to be the most kid-friendly, only a short 5-minute hike from the car but was sort of rocky and uphill. The falls were powerful and the water was ice cold, but that didn’t stop us from dipping in. There is a hike upwards to a second higher falls but it really was an upward climb. I bowed out but my husband and sister did it with some of the kids, including my 6-year old niece. Don’t lose each other – no cell service.
• I found THIS MAP from the USDA Forest Service to be very helpful when selecting our hikes and stops.

If we had more time, we would have liked to hit up Angelito Falls, which is actually just outside of El Yunque’s entrance (so go here if you didn’t get a reservation). A short walk to the falls and lots of shallow, nice swimming holes for young kids. Check it out . And remember El Yunque closes its gate at 5pm daily.

As far as other trails in the rainforest go, many sounded quite difficult in both length and physical condition. My marathon-running brother did nearly all the trails in the rainforest and had stories to tell about muddy climbs, slippery slopes, downpours, fog, and general difficulties. I’ve heard La Coca Falls is an easier option as is the Caimitillo Trail. But beauty? THAT is everywhere in El Yunque.

Our Puerto Rico vacation ended with a “free choice” day so we did Old San Juan again with a night relaxing at the house pool trying to consume all the leftover food we had ordered. It was a mozzarella-stick, chicken-nugget, leftover-hotdog kind of night. And it was absolutely perfect.

After another long travel day, we all made it home from the trip content, fulfilled, joyful, grateful, fatter, braver, tanner, and happy. Was the most wonderful way to ring in retirement for a strong leader of a woman –

Here are some of the best destinations to vacation in Puerto Rico if you have children.

Getting to the beautiful island of Vieques will only cost you one quick ferry ride. You can explore the black-sand beaches, or you can watch the wild horses roam. The island has much to offer in the way of entertainment. Spend the day beach hopping, kayaking, birdwatching, snorkeling, paddleboarding, hiking, and even horseback riding.

While you’re there, the Esperanza neighborhood is renowned for its delicious cuisine, so stop by and taste the authentic Puerto Rican fare. Perhaps one of the most distinctive attractions is the wonder of Bahia Bioluminiscente at Mosquito Bay ; witness the bioluminescence of the glowing organisms and behold its beauty. What’s more, the touring companies will allow you to view the glowing bay through kayaks which have transparent bottoms.

To get a better idea of what the island has in store for you, try out Crystal Clear, an eco-tourism operation in Vieques, Puerto Rico, that offers mermaid classes, snorkeling tours, and even mermaid for hire for events and parties. Dorado is on Puerto Rico’s north coast, and the town is full of beautiful resorts. Dorado is quite possibly the most extravagant destination in all of Puerto Rico.

Take you and the family to the stunning Dorado Beach. Children are safe when in the water; thanks to the wave breaks, large waves don’t occur very often. While you’re at the beach, don’t forget to take in the palm trees and the spectacular ambiance that you’ll be submerged in. Bring your camera!

The number of water sports to experience while on the beach is seemingly endless. Indulge in kitesurfing, fishing, swimming, and snorkeling. Moreover, there are even four different quality golf courses that you can choose from when you’re looking to have a good game. There’s also food, a theater, and even playgrounds scattered throughout the immediate area.

Finally, if you and your children are looking for excitement, be sure to stop by the La Plata Zipline Experience. This particular attraction is great for children beginning in their teens. On another note, the Puerto Rico Sportfishing Charters are willing to arrange a full day for you and the family to embark on a fishing adventure. There are even two water parks, Gran Parque and The Watermill, both designed to provide an entire day’s worth of thrills.

Culebra is a small island that you can reach either by boat or plane. If you manage to make it to Culebra, be sure to head to Flamenco Beach. You may be surprised to find a nice area specifically designated for camping. This island offers everything that you want out of a beach. There’s sun, beautiful sand, and blue waters to wade around in.

Furthermore, you can take the family to Culebrita island, but the first one must charter a boat or visit via a local tour company. The ride takes about 25 minutes, and quite frankly, it’s a beautiful experience in and of itself. 

This island is also known for its spectacular beaches and deep blue seas. Additionally, there’s a historic lighthouse from the 1800s that you can visit as the icing on the cake.

If keeping the children entertained is a priority for you, the Museum of History or even the Culebra Public Library are great destinations to achieve this. At the library, kids can participate in many events and activities such as storytelling, arts and crafts, and much more. 

If you wish to have an invigorating day trip, Aquafari hosts awesome excursions. The guides will allow everyone to explore the bays and the stunning beaches while teaching you about marine life.

Lastly, the Reserva Natural de Culebra is a stunning nature reserve park that you and the children will have a blast exploring. You can walk around, hike, and sit down to have a picnic and allow the children to play in the open space.

Ricon is a unique beach town in that it’s specifically known as a beach fit for surfing. Rincon is in the west coast region of Puerto Rico. Furthermore, Rincon has breathtaking sunsets every day of the year. If you and the family wish to experience a genuine beach town in a peaceful atmosphere, then Ricon is the destination for you.

It will also be worth your while to visit the Rincon Lighthouse Park . Lighthouse lovers are sure to be thoroughly entertained by this attraction. The views in these areas are something to behold; Punta Higuero is a location that comes to mind when thinking about a good place for pics. 

Moreover, there’s an active cultural center named The Plaza of Rincon, where many events take place throughout the year. We advise that you try to make it out there on a Sunday so that you can take part in the farmer’s selling fresh produce and the lovely live music. 

There are many shops located all about the plaza. Children also have the option to go snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding, swimming, and even sailing in Rincon.

Lastly, the Aguadilla Skate and Splash Park. This destination is both a playground and a water park. As you can imagine, this place is tons of fun for kids! 

This small city is quaint and endearing; once you’ve stayed for just a few days, you are bound to have difficulty leaving. The atmosphere is captivating, and most people simply fall in love with the place and all that it has to offer.

Without a shadow of a doubt, families must prioritize going to JungleQui Zipline Park at El Yunque National Forest, especially if you’re looking for family fun and safe adventure. While you’re there, you will traverse beautiful hiking trails and thrill-inducing zip-lines while enjoying stunning aerial views of the lush rainforest.

Another must-see destination is the Mt Britton Lookout Tower. From this vantage point, you’re able to enjoy majestic views of the rainforest. The summit tower allows you to see three coastlines in addition to the rainforest mountain ridges.

The attractions are seemingly endless, and the El Yunque National Forest is a majestic rainforest that spans 29,000 biologically diverse acres in Northeast Puerto Rico. And just outside the entrance of the El Yunque is a small town where you can grab food and buy souvenirs.

The El Yunque is sure to captivate your children as there are many unique plant and animal species littered throughout the huge environment. The hiking trails are all designated according to their difficulty. 

Mt. Britton Towers and Yokahu are two places where you can witness breathtaking waterfalls, picnic areas, and even restaurants where you can dine in. Thanks to the sheer size of El Yunque, it is easy to spend an entire day exploring, so be sure to come with a plan so that you can visit all of your desired spots.

Isabela is a beautiful city that embodies everything that you’d want in a relaxing environment. The weather is amazing, the sun is perfect, and the city has abundant lush green plants and wild tropical flowers. There are more than three miles of coastline and placid trails for you and your family to explore.

This beautiful city also happens to be a popular place in Puerto Rico for cycling. The town has a coastal trial that has spectacular views of the sea with beaches and local restaurants that you can conveniently dine at. A nice spot that you may want to visit is Middles Beach . 

Here you can observe talented surfers riding the waves of the Atlantic. Additionally, the Guajataca River is a great place to take the children and the family to experience a kayaking adventure.

You should also take a day out of your schedule to visit Jobos Beach. This beach has very calm waters, making it ideal for families with children in tow. Interestingly, you can also find some rough waters ideal for surfers. There’s also ample opportunity for the family to participate in scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, canoeing, and even windsurfing.

When it comes to the Metro Region of Puerto Rico, Isla Verde has the best beaches in this particular region. This city has large palm trees, beautiful golden sand, and blue, cerulean seas. This place is simply a sight to behold.

You can choose from any number of water activities such as parasailing, flyboarding, and boat tours. What’s more, you can rent a jet ski or even go on banana boat rides!

In addition, the El Yunque National Rainforest is just a half-hour drive from Isla Verde. As mentioned previously, this rainforest is one of the top natural attractions in all of Puerto Rico. You can hike through this beautiful rainforest and observe all that it has to offer.

Located just 45 minutes from Isla Verde is the Laguna Grande , one of the bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico. You must book your space ahead of time since it’s one of the most popular natural attractions in Puerto Rico.

Situated along the Atlantic coast of Puerto Rico, San Juan is the capital city and the heart of culture and history for the island. There are so many things to do for the family; you’ll never be bored should you choose to vacation in this beautiful coastal location. 

Let’s start with Old San Juan , which is a residential district located in San Juan. It’s like an enormous museum that has numerous attractions that you can reach on foot. The buildings are splashed with pastel colors, and there are several cafes, historical landmarks, restaurants, unique shops, and more. 

Once you’ve finished sightseeing, you can take a trip to The Paseo de la Princesa. This trail is perfect for cycling, hiking, a relaxing stroll, or exploring. As you walk, you’ll run into a children’s playground for kids of all ages.  

Next up, if you’re staying in San Juan, there’s an MD-82 American Airlines plane. It’s a great site for kids to explore, and it’s near a children’s petting zoo, excellent for rainy days. 

For those that aren’t staying in Puerto Rico very long and don’t want to do too much traveling around, consider Hacienda Campo Rico . They have a lot of children’s games and activities like zip-lining, horseback riding, ATV trail rides, and much more.

Out of all the kid-friendly destinations in the city, the Wildlife Museum is amongst the most popular. It is the only museum of this magnitude in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean as a whole. They have over 200 mammals in their exhibits. It’s also an interactive space, making the experience even better. They’ll also see lions, elephants, giraffes, and other animals.   

And if you just want to have a relaxing day with fun in the sun, head to the lively Condado District, where you can find Condado Beach. You and your family can enjoy miles of white sand and crystal blue waters.

Cabo Rojo is a region located in southwest Puerto Rico. Families that love to see and interact with animals will get the most out of a vacation to Cabo Rojo. The National Wildlife Refuge in this city has tons of exotic animals and coral reefs to explore. 

Another family-friendly location is Boqueròn Bay Beach, where the waters are always warm, you can participate in watersports like snorkeling and scuba diving, and there are plenty of food spots nearby.   

Families that have older children may enjoy visiting The El Faro Los Morrillos, a historic lighthouse in the area. It sits on top of limestone cliffs 200 feet up. After renovation, the lighthouse still functions, but it’s more of a tourist center where guests can learn the history behind the landmark. 

Less than 45 minutes away, Gilligan’s Island has shallow waters that are perfect for children to swim and play in the water safely. The slow currents are gentle, and there are playgrounds near the island, making it the ultimate kid-friendly beach. 

Additionally, for a little more excitement, book a kayaking adventure or go island-hopping and see how many beaches the family can hit in one day. Everyone can sit down together throughout the day and enjoy a meal at one of several picnic areas on the island. The gorgeous palm trees provide shade while you eat and relax before heading back into the world. 

In eastern Puerto Rico, Fajardo is an excellent choice for families that have kids. This region is well known as one of the best locations for water sports. If you’re booking a Caribbean vacation, and the beach is a focal point, Fajardo has the best activities. Most notably, Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve has the bioluminescent lake Laguna Grande that is nothing short of amazing.

You and the family get to take a nighttime trip by kayak through the woods and down the river as you observe the bright blue, glowing organisms beneath you. It’s such a cool sight to see! During the daytime, take the kids to explore the offshore waters and watch the manatees, turtles, and dolphins in their natural habitat. 

Seeking thrill? Stop by the Coqui Water Park to enjoy over two and a half acres of thrills. They have a variety of rapids, water slides, and a hip restaurant. Toddlers to teens will have a blast for hours at the water park, and parents can relax by the pool or join in the action. 

What else is there for kids? Well, Puerto Rico’s largest theme park, the Carabalí Rainforest Adventure Park, is the perfect destination. Explore the rainforest while riding an ATV, go horseback riding on the beach or through the forest, or race your family on go-karts for maximum enjoyment. 

If you want to explore the deep blue sea, rent a sailboat through Erin Go Bragh Sailing And Snorkeling Charters. They offer a nature cruise worth trying for passengers of all ages. You’ll travel to uninhabited islands, and the biodiversity is unmatched. Please be respectful and do not disrupt the environment, as many of the species are endangered. 

Arecibo is a Puerto Rican city on the coast, about an hour away from San Juan. You’ll find some of the best exploits on this island, starting with the karst landscape. The expansive cave systems, limestone formations, and subterranean rivers await. 

Want something cool for the kids to do? The Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park, constructed in 1898 by the Spanish government, is the site for a cultural theme park. Kids get to roam around like pirates on the north shores of the island. As you make your way to the lighthouse, you get to see three replications of Spanish ships that sailed to the New World. 

There’s also a recreated village where children are free to walk around and explore, and they can even climb aboard the pirate ship and pretend to be captain. For educational activities, parents can take their kids to the on-site museum, to the aquarium, or the small water park that they’re sure to love. 

No worries when it comes time for lunch; with the variety of food vendors on the premises, this can easily become a pleasant day trip for everyone. If you want to keep with the theme of pirates, visit the Faro y Parque Histórico de Arecibo. It’s a family-friendly amusement park with rides for young children and older children as well.

Another attraction that’s fun for children is the Arecibo Observatory . Take your kids aged seven and older to observe the wonders of the universe first-hand. There are a wide array of exhibits and interactive activities to help kids understand the earth and the planets that surround us. 

It’s a great opportunity to ask questions and understand our responsibility to the planet we inhabit. You can also grab food and drinks at the observatory. 

Carolina, PR is on the northeastern coast. 

They have a lot of great events and attractions for children, starting with the Museo del Niño de Carolina . Children get to be hands-on and experience the exciting displays that focus on music, electricity, volcanoes, and more. There are designated spaces to play dress-up, roam through a mini-city, mock construction sites, and other simulations to hone their creativity. 

 Another exciting activity is Just 4 Fun, an amusement park for children located in the Plaza Carolina shopping center. There are playgrounds here for preschoolers and middle schoolers as well. 

It’s packed full of obstacle courses, rocking chairs, chorreras, bouncy houses, a cafeteria, ball pools, and even a video game arcade. They’ll never want to leave, and you’ll have no problem keeping your children entertained for hours on end. 

If it’s a hot day, try the Parque Acuatico Infantil Aquasol . This water park is surrounded by lush greenery, making it even more exciting, as you feel like you’re in a tropical rainforest. They have water slides for different age groups, several water triggers, water cannons on a pirate ship, a water tower, and more. Lifeguards are always on duty, ensuring that your children are safe while exploring the grounds. 

And if you have older kids, they might enjoy the Carolina Bowling Center, which has 42 lanes of high-tech bowling fun. They serve food and drinks, and they also host parties if you’re traveling for someone’s birthday. Of course, like the other destinations on the list, there are always multiple beaches nearby with an abundance of water sports to enjoy.

We haven’t done many beach vacations since having kids. Too much stuff to schlep, too much sunscreen to apply, and not nearly enough time with a good book and a cold drink. But when we started planning a spring break trip with our good friends and their baby (who live on the East Coast), Puerto Rico with kids was an easy choice.

At the time, our son was 2.5yo and I was pregnant with our daughter (and yearning for a babymoon ) so we wanted a low-key, relaxing vacation that still offered interesting activities beyond the beach. Puerto Rico checked all our boxes and exceeded our expectations! If you’re looking for a first “big trip”, you won’t regret a family trip to Puerto Rico.

Why you should visit Puerto Rico with kids

• The logistics are easy. No passport and no currency conversion. Flights from the mainland to Puerto Rico are not too long, easy to come by and reasonably priced. Driving in Puerto Rico is the same as the mainland US.
• Limited language barrier in Puerto Rico, but still a unique cultural opportunity. Almost everyone we encountered spoke at least some English, but it’s very different from the mainland US – the food, the social norms, the history.
• Great mix of activities in a compact area. During our week on the island, we didn’t drive more than an hour (though we only stayed on the eastern half of the island) but we enjoyed pristine beaches, mountainous rain forest, luxurious time out on the water, interesting history, and a vibrant city scene.

Thanks to all of these features, I’d rank Puerto Rico as one of the best places for your first vacation with kids. Even for seasoned travelers, it’s a top destination for family travel.

Where is the best place to stay in Puerto Rico? After months of research, we decided that Luquillo Beach was the best place to stay in Puerto Rico with kids. Luquillo Beach truly has everything we could have wanted:

• Beautiful beach with easy amenities (umbrellas and chairs are plentiful and cheap, plus you can buy ice cream and alcoholic drinks while the kids play in the soft sand)
• Quiet life compared with the bustle of San Juan
• Central location allows easy access to city, rainforest, nature preserve and water activities
• Great dining options at all price points

We snagged a great 2 bedroom apartment for our party of six. We love staying in vacation rental apartments when we travel with kids because it allows us to have adult time long after the kids go to sleep. Renting apartments saves us money and stress because we have a kitchen to prepare breakfast and lunch and laundry facilities to minimize our packing. We also considered staying in nearby Fajardo, adjacent to the marina, where there are many luxury high-rise buildings; however, we preferred the lower cost and more central location of Luquillo Beach.

There are some many things to do near Luquillo Beach! Here are some of our favorite activities near Luquillo Beach with kids:

Luquillo Beach – Monserrate Balneario

How can you beat this view? As I mentioned above, the beach is pristine and there are nice amenities (even a locker room and changing rooms!). Mature palm trees provide opportunities for shade, and we had no trouble getting a prime spot during our March trip. Entry into the water is quite shallow, making this beach a great place to dip those tiny toes. We bought some inexpensive sand toys at the grocery store on our first night and left them in our Airbnb for the next family to enjoy. You do pay a nominal fee to park at Luquillo Beach, which funds the routine cleaning and maintenance that keeps the beach so lovely. A wagon with big wheels may come in handy to lug all your kid gear down to the beach! Don’t forget these other toddler beach essentials .

El Yunque Rainforest

You only have to drive 15 minutes from Luquillo and you’ll arrive in the middle of El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system. Why should you visit El Yunque? Just take a look! The scenery is so different than anything else in the United States, a real taste of the tropical ecosystem. Start your day at the Visitor’s Center, which offers informational signs and even a movie to get your oriented. You can also use the restroom and get the kids situated here before venturing out into the rest of the forest.

Head out in the car and climb up to the top of Yokahú Tower for sweeping views above the rainforest canopy. Once you’ve had your fill of the view get down where the action is and take the kids to see La Mina Falls. I recommend taking the Big Tree trail to the falls, as is under a mile in each direction and has limited elevation change (though there is a section with steps). There are even informational signs along the trail, which is great for educating your budding naturalists. Jacob did the entire hike himself, and our friend Alicia did the hike while wearing her infant son.

Pro tip: If you (or your kids) plan to splash in the cold water, wear the right shoes! Many people love Keen Newports , and our favorites for Jacob are Geox sandals . Some adventurous visitors wear their swimsuits for the hike and dive into the pool completely!

Boat Rides from Fajardo

What better way to see the Caribbean than from the water? There are so many options for a boat trip off of Puerto Rico. If you’re traveling with older kids (or without kids!), you can’t beat a full-day trip boat trip to Vieques to Culebra from Fajardo. Culebra offers great snorkeling and kayaking adventures, while Vieques offers those activities and a stunning bioluminescent bay lit by mosquitos. A visit to the bioluminescent bay often arrives back in Fajardo after 10pm, so it would make for a very long day with young children. On our next trip to Puerto Rico, we intend to visit some of the smaller islands.

For our crew, we decided it wouldn’t be the best choice. Instead, we found Erin Go Bragh Sailing & Snorkeling Charters and we couldn’t have been happier! Since were were such a large group, the cost of chartering our own yacht for the day was in line with the total we would have paid for spots on an organized tour. Chartering your own boat is the best way to go sailing with kids on vacation (we’ve done it in Vancouver too!). Captain Dan of the Erin Go Bragh and his first mate, Bam Bam, took care of all our needs including drinks, snacks and a delicious lunch. They provided snorkel gear, flotation devices and towels as well. We loved the flexibility of setting our own schedule and itinerary. We visited two lovely snorkel spots, and Jacob even got to steer! My favorite memory from our sail was watching my normally-anxious little guy leap off the back of the boat to meet me for some snorkeling. After a good swim and a filling lunch, he drifted off to sleep while watching a movie thanks to the calming ocean waves. I’ll never complain about more adult time on a trip with kids! If your family is visiting Puerto Rico, I highly recommend a day at sea on the Erin Go Braugh.  Want to try snorkeling with kids? Make sure to get them the right gear!

Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve

How can you see a bioluminescent bay without going all the way to Vieques? There’s one right at Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve! That tour initially drew us to visit the Nature Reserve. Before we arrived in Puerto Rico, we booked a night tour for our group – they require booking in advance, as the tour is only offered three nights per week and the staff needs to coordinate the tour language, as it’s available in both English and Spanish. The night tour covers all the highlights of the Nature Reserve by a combination of tram car and foot: the beach, the lighthouse and finally the bioluminescent bay at Laguna Grande. Visitors can see the bioluminescent bay on foot by walking along a boardwalk (it’s dark, so be careful with little ones or use your baby carrier). You can “stir the pot” with a stick and the fish leave a glowing trail behind as they swim along!

A traveler’s most important skill is flexibility. The night tour is only offered three nights per week and we arrived on Saturday in mid-afternoon. We knew we’d be tired, but at least our family had a four hour time zone advantage and our friends had an hour so we figured we would make it work since us grown ups were so excited to see one of Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays. Man plans and God laughs, right?

After we had settled into our vacation apartment in Luquillo and gotten the little boys down for naps, the Dads headed out in our rented minivan to buy provisions in nearby Fajardo. When their trip dragged on and on until dangerously close to the starting time of the tour and they hadn’t called, we started texting and calling hoping everything was ok. Eventually we got in touch and found out that they had been the victims of an attempted car-on-car hit-and-run in the parking lot!

A local backed into their car hard and then tried to drive off, only to be stopped by the parking lot guard — apparently these things happen often, which is why the stores pay for guards in the lot. The guard was a nice guy and insisted on calling the police to file a full report, while Ronnie and his friend waited around and picked up small snippets of conversation with their limited Spanish skills. Unfortunately, us Moms couldn’t get anyone to pick up at the Nature Reserve to explain the situation since it was 7pm on a Saturday night. Sadly we weren’t able to see the bioluminescent bay in Fajardo during our trip, but we’re sure that we’ll visit Puerto Rico again.

We’ve had to use it a few times over the years and it’s worth its weight in gold! The claims process is smooth and they have never given us a hard time. Fortunately, we had plenty of time during our trip to Luquillo to return to the Nature Reserve during the day. The daytime tour covered many of the same areas as the night tour, but allowed more time and a very different (and brighter) perspective. Our guide explained the ecological challenges of the region, showed off local flora and fauna, led us to a trove of fossilized coral on the beach (which Jacob still remembers three years later!) and showed us the far-reaching views from atop the light house. On the ground level of the lighthouse there’s even a learning center where you can check out some of those bioluminescent fish – no matter what time of day you visit. While our visit to Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve with kids didn’t proceed exactly as we had planned, we still had a great time, saw new things and learned a lot.

The centuries-old city of San Juan has so much excitement that it could fill an entire blog post on its own. If your family is more interested in a bustling city experience, San Juan could be a great place to stay. We preferred to stay in Luquillo for its quieter atmosphere and proximity to outdoor activities, but dedicated a full day to exploring San Juan (an easy 45 minute drive). The city is small enough that you can park your car in one of the underground lots near the fort and forget about it all day. Exploring the city on foot allows you to duck into the colorful side streets, hear music wafting out of doorways and stop for ice cream as often as you the kids want.

Our first stop in San Juan was San Juan National Historic Site, where we visited Fort San Felipe del Morro. The five hundred year old fort is still well-preserved and offers excellent interpretive panels throughout to provide context for the building. In addition, the views from the end of the islet are unbeatable. If you visit on a weekend, there are numerous guided tours available that are led by rangers, but on any day you can visit the fort solo.

Beyond the fort itself, you’ll find expansive grounds that are freely available for public use. Though we visited the fort in the morning, we returned to the grounds at dusk for a little casual kite flying. Street vendors sell ice cream, kites and other necessities on the sidewalk adjacent to the park, so just bring your camera and a smile.

Apart from visiting Fort San Felipe del Morro, we didn’t have a set agenda for our day in San Juan with kids except to soak up the feeling of the city. We strolled through old town, drank from fresh coconuts, watched boats come in by the harbor, and then walked along Paseo de la Princesa to see San Juan Gate and eventually return back to the fort. We arrived at sunset just in time for our son to learn how to fly a kite on the beautiful grounds of the fort.

Now that I’ve returned to Puerto Rico and spent more time in the city, I put together the perfect itinerary for one day in San Juan . You’ll see the best highlights from history to food to culture and more!

For a taste of Puerto Rican food, we ducked into El Jibarito in Old San Juan. Is El Jibarito a tourist trap? Perhaps somewhat. When we visited, the wait was long and it was thick with kids on spring break from New York; however, once inside we saw a clientele that included both tourists and locals. The food was good, the drinks were strong and the waiter was gracious and very helpful with translation and keeping our kid happy. I’ve read great recommendations for Cafe Manolin as well; I’ll definitely put it on our list for the next visit, asmany feel that the food and vibe are more authentic, plus the prices are better.

Bacardi Factory Tour

Whether you’re staying in San Juan or just don’t mind a little more driving from Luquillo, the Bacardi Rum Distillery historical tour looks like a fun way to learn a different side to local history and industry. We didn’t have time to go on this tour, but always enjoy touring distilleries around the world. The historical tour runs several times every day and is even free for kids!

In US cities, we have food trucks. In Puerto Rico, they have the Luquillo Beach food kiosks. These buildings look almost like shacks, but looks can be deceiving. There are dozens of choices, from local cuisine to drinks to desserts. We ate at different kiosks almost every day; many even offer a take-out option for those evenings when you’re traveling with kids.

A family trip to Puerto Rico offers something for everyone. Outdoor activities, history, culture and beautiful beaches. So parents, forget the passports and take the kids to Puerto Rico!
