Local News | Sandpipers Holiday Homes Tour returns to in-person event Dec. 3 to 5

manhattan beach holiday home tour

Holiday Homes Tour, one of Sandpipers’ largest fundraisers, raised more than $100,000 last year, despite the event taking place on computer screens.

“It went really well, but it was kind of an isolating experience,” Alex Mandas, director for the Holiday Homes Tour, said of last year’s virtual event. “We are thrilled to be able to take it back to in-person and get that face-to-face community experience.”

In 2019, the last time the tour had people actually visiting homes, the event raised more than $140,000.

This year’s Holiday Homes Tour, from Dec. 3 to 5, will feature one home in Manhattan Beach and two in Redondo Beach. Ticket buyers can choose how many homes they want to visit per day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All proceeds from the home tour will fund Sandpipers’ Holiday Baskets Program.

The Holiday Baskets Program distributes basic necessities to hundreds in need of all ages in the South Bay. Each basket contains more than $900 in essentials, including clothing and personal hygiene items, as well as toys and gifts.

A group of South Bay women started the Sandpipers in 1931, when many local families struggled during the Great Depression. They started a bread line in Hermosa Beach, according to its website, and helped feed and clothe those in need.

The nonprofit supports more than 60 local charities, said Sandpipers Board of Directors President Nikki Binford-Marshall.

“Through the generosity of tour ticket holders, community partners and over 200 volunteers,” Binford-Marshall said in an email, “we are able to support Sandpipers’ philanthropic programs right here in the South Bay.”

Besides the three homes on tour, a holiday boutique and a café will be set up at the Neptunian Woman’s Club, 920 Highland Ave., in Manhattan Beach. The boutique and café are open and free to the public during the same hours as the tour.

Masks are required for entry into homes and inside the Neptunian Woman’s Club when not consuming food and drinks. There will be no shuttle this year and ride sharing is encouraged, according to organizers.

Presale tickets for the homes tour are available for $30, plus credit card fees. Starting Dec. 3, tickets will be $35 plus fees.
