The main cost is the visa application fee of EUR 90 (approx. INR 7,200). Additional costs might include travel insurance, document translations, and courier services (if needed).

How long does it take to get a Norway tourist visa from India?

Processing times can vary, but typically range from 10 to 60 days. You must submit your application well in advance (ideally 3-4 months before your intended travel date) to avoid disappointment.

What is the success rate for Indian applicants for a Norway tourist visa?

There's no official data on success rates. However, by meeting all requirements, providing complete documentation, and demonstrating a genuine purpose for your visit, you can significantly improve your chances of approval.

Do I need a cover letter for my Norway tourist visa application?

A cover letter is not mandatory, but it can strengthen your application. It allows you to explain your travel plans and itinerary in more detail, adding a personal touch.

Should I use a visa consultancy for my Norway tourist visa application?

For most Indian applicants, a visa consultancy isn't necessary. The application process is straightforward, and the UDI website provides clear instructions and forms. However, consider a reputable visa consultant if your situation is complex or you require specific guidance.

How much bank balance do I need to show for a Norway tourist visa application?

There's no official minimum amount mandated, but Norwegian authorities generally expect you to have enough funds to cover your living expenses during your stay. A good rule of thumb is to show daily expenses of around NOK 500 (approx. INR 4,000) for the duration of your trip through bank statements.

Can I extend my Norway tourist visa after arrival?

Extending a Norway tourist visa after arrival is generally not possible. Tourist visas are issued for a specific duration, and exceeding that limit can lead to legal repercussions. If you require a longer stay, consider applying for a long-term visa (residence permit) before your trip, but this process has different requirements and purposes.

What happens if my Norway tourist visa application gets rejected?

If your application is rejected, you'll receive a notification from the Norwegian authorities outlining the reason for rejection. You have the right to appeal the decision within a specific timeframe, typically mentioned in the rejection notice.

As an Indian citizen, experiencing this magic firsthand requires a Norway Tourist Visa. This comprehensive guide will equip you with all the essential information for a smooth visa application process.

According to the Indian embassy in Norway, a significant number of Indians visit Norway annually, with tourism being a major reason [Source: Royal Norwegian Embassy in India]. To cater to this influx, the Norwegian government has established a streamlined visa application process for Indian nationals.

Types of Norway Visas Available for Indians

Norway tourist visa (schengen visa).

The most common visa for short stays in Norway is the Schengen Visa, which allows Indians to visit Norway and other Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This visa is ideal for tourism, family visits, or short business trips. The Schengen Visa is highly coveted, not only because it grants access to Norway but also to 25 other European countries.

Norway Business Visa

For Indians traveling to Norway for business purposes, the Norway Business Visa is appropriate. This visa also falls under the Schengen Visa category and permits stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. It is suitable for attending conferences, meetings, or conducting business negotiations.

Norway Student Visa

Indians planning to study in Norway for more than three months will need a student visa, also known as a residence permit for studies. This visa requires proof of admission to a Norwegian educational institution, along with sufficient funds to cover living expenses and accommodation.

Norway Work Visa

The Norway Work Visa, or residence permit for work, is necessary for Indians who have secured employment in Norway. This visa allows the holder to work and reside in Norway for the duration of their employment contract. Applicants must provide proof of a job offer and meet specific skill and qualification requirements.

Norway Visa Requirements for Indians

Eligibility criteria for indian applicants.

Before diving into the application process of norway visa for indians , it’s essential to understand the eligibility criteria:

  • Valid Passport: Your Indian passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure from Norway and have at least two blank pages for visa stamps.
  • Proof of Accommodation: You’ll need to provide documentation confirming your stay arrangements in Norway, such as hotel bookings, hostel reservations, or a letter of invitation if staying with a host.
  • Travel Medical Insurance: Schengen regulations mandate travel medical insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 for medical emergencies, hospitalization, and repatriation costs.
  • Proof of Sufficient Funds: Financial stability is a key factor. You must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your living expenses during your stay in Norway. Bank statements, salary slips, or sponsor letters can fulfill this requirement.
  • Return Flight Tickets: A confirmed return flight ticket itinerary showcasing your exit from the Schengen Area is mandatory.
  • Employment Status: Proof of employment, like a leave letter from your company, strengthens your application.

Additional Considerations:

  • Previous Travel History: A strong travel history with a positive visa record in other Schengen countries can be advantageous.
  • Purpose of Visit: Clearly outlining your purpose of visiting Norway, whether sightseeing, attending events, or visiting family, strengthens your application.

The Application Process Explained

Now that you understand the eligibility criteria, let’s explore the application process:

  • Choose the Right Visa Application Center (VAC): VFS Global is the official partner for processing Norway visa applications in India. Locate your nearest VAC on the VFS website https://www.vfsglobal.com/denmark/usa/ .
  • Complete the Online Application Form: The online application form can be accessed through the Application Portal Norway https://www.udi.no/en/want-to-apply/ . Ensure you fill out the form accurately and comprehensively.
  • Gather Required Documents: Compile the necessary documents as per the checklist provided by the Norwegian Embassy or VFS Global. Double-check that all documents are valid, translated into English if necessary, and neatly organized.
  • Schedule an Appointment: Once your application and documents are prepared, schedule an appointment for biometric data collection (fingerprints and photograph) at your chosen VFS center.
  • Submit your Application: Visit the VFS center on your appointment date and submit your completed application form and supporting documents. The center will collect the visa fee and may require additional documents if needed.

Processing Time and Fees:

Processing times for Norway Tourist Visa for Indians typically range from 10 to 15 working days. However, during peak seasons or for complex applications, it can take longer. The standard visa fee for Indian applicants is approximately EUR 80 (subject to exchange rate fluctuations). It’s advisable to factor in potential delays and apply well in advance of your intended travel date.

Tips for a Successful Application:

  • Meticulous Document Preparation: Ensure all documents are genuine, valid, and meet the specified requirements.
  • Travel Insurance: Choose a reputable insurance provider with a coverage plan that adheres to Schengen regulations.
  • Proof of Funds: Provide clear documentation demonstrating your ability to support yourself financially during your stay.
  • Travel Itinerary: A well-defined itinerary showcasing your planned movements within Norway strengthens your application.
  • Be Truthful and Consistent: Maintain transparency and consistency throughout the application process.

Common Reasons for Visa Rejection and How to Avoid Them

  • Incomplete Application: Ensure all sections of the application form are filled out correctly.
  • Insufficient Financial Means: Provide clear evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay.
  • Lack of Travel Insurance: Obtain comprehensive travel insurance that meets the Schengen requirements.
  • Unclear Travel Purpose: Clearly articulate your reason for visiting and provide supporting documents.
  • Invalid Passport: Make sure your passport meets the validity and blank page requirements.

Travel Tips for Indian Visitors to Norway

Best time to visit.

  • Summer (June to August): Ideal for experiencing the Midnight Sun, outdoor activities, and fjord cruises.
  • Winter (December to February): Perfect for witnessing the Northern Lights, skiing, and other winter sports.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Norway is a nation known for its stunning landscapes, but its rich cultural heritage and social etiquette are also worth exploring. Familiarize yourself with some basic customs like respecting personal space, practicing queue etiquette, and tipping moderately. Embrace the concept of “friluftsliv” (outdoor life) and enjoy the numerous hiking trails, national parks, and opportunities to connect with nature.

Currency and Payments

  • Norway operates on the Norwegian Krone (NOK). While credit and debit cards are widely accepted in major cities, carrying some cash in NOK is recommended for smaller towns and unforeseen circumstances. Research currency exchange rates and consider using travel cards or prepaid forex cards for convenient transactions.
  • English Proficiency: Most Norwegians speak excellent English, so language barriers are minimal.

Transportation

  • Public Transport: Norway has an efficient public transportation system, including buses, trains, and ferries.
  • Driving: If you plan to drive, ensure you have an International Driving Permit (IDP) and are familiar with local traffic rules.

Obtaining a Norway Tourist Visa can be a smooth process with careful planning and preparation. By understanding the eligibility criteria, following the application steps meticulously, and addressing the common FAQs, Indian travelers can embark on their dream vacation to explore the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture of Norway. Remember, applying well in advance and ensuring all documentation is accurate and complete is key to a successful application. With this comprehensive guide, you’re well-equipped to navigate the Norway Tourist Visa process and turn your Norwegian adventure into a reality.

Passports can be picked up by:

  • Immediate family members (parents, children, spouse)
  • A group's single representative
  • Authorized individuals collecting for government officials, with official authorization
  • Company representatives with an authorization letter and company ID

Collectors should bring:

  • A photocopy of their ID
  • The original ICR (Invoice cum Receipt)
  • An authorization letter from the applicant

Applicants who cannot personally collect their documents or are not among the authorized categories should opt for courier delivery when submitting their application.

Processing Time

The processing time for Norway visa applications from Indian applicants usually ranges between 15 to 21 working days once the application is received by the embassy or consulate. If the application needs further examination by the Directorate of Immigration (UDI), the processing time may extend up to 45 days.

If your application for a Norway visa is declined, the embassy that made the decision is the place where you must send your appeal.

Who Can Appeal?

The appeal must come from the visa applicant themselves or someone who has been given the power of attorney by the applicant. This means if you want to appeal on behalf of someone else, like a family member, employee, or friend who planned to visit or live in Norway, you need their written permission.

When to Appeal?

You have a three-week period to file your appeal, starting from the day you or your legal representative were informed of the decision. If you can't collect all the necessary documents in three weeks, you should still appeal within this period and note that you will send additional information later. You will then get another two weeks to provide the extra documents.

How to Appeal?

Write a letter stating which decision you're appealing against and why you think it was wrong. This letter can be in Norwegian or English. Remember, your appeal won't be considered if it's not signed.

You should send this letter to the embassy. Include any new information or documents that support your case. The rejection letter will guide you on how to submit your appeal. There's no fee for appealing.

After you submit your appeal, the embassy will take another look at your application. They might change their decision based on your appeal or send it to the UDI (Directorate of Immigration) for a second review. The UDI will make a final decision on your appeal. If the UDI also rejects your appeal, you cannot appeal further.

Common reasons for Norway Schengen Visa denials in India

Most Indian citizens get their Norway Schengen Visa without problems. However, there are situations in which applications are denied.

These are common reasons for visa refusals , keeping an eye out for them will help you avoid delays/issues and improve your chances of a successful outcome:

1. Insufficient supporting documents: One of the most common reasons for visa refusals is the lack of proper documentation or the submission of incomplete information. Make sure to include all requested documents that support your travel purpose and meet the requirements.

2. Insufficient financial resources: Submit proof of your financial stability, such as bank statements, sponsorship letters, income statements, or other supporting documents.

3. Inadequate travel insurance: Have travel insurance that meets the minimum coverage and submit a valid insurance policy along with your application.

4. Lack of authentic travel reasons: If your purpose of the visit is not clearly stated or seems vague, the Norwegian authorities may doubt the genuineness of your visit. It is important to provide a detailed and credible explanation of your travel plans.

5. No strong ties to India: If you cannot show strong ties to your home country, such as work, property ownership, family commitments, or enrollment in a school, the visa authorities may question your intention to return to India. It is important to provide evidence of your ties to show you’re going to leave the Schengen Area before your visa expires.

6. Past visa violations: If you have a history of overstaying a visa or previous visa rejections, it can impact your current Schengen Visa application. Any previous violations may raise concerns about your compliance. Remember that countries can share information with each other if they doubt your intentions.

Addressing these major reasons for visa refusals will help you prepare for the Norway Visa process.

Norway Schengen Visa: Approval and denial for Indian citizens

When a Norwegian Schengen Visa application is processed in India, it can result in either approval or rejection. Here's what happens in each case:

Approval of the Norwegian Schengen Visa

If your Norwegian Schengen Visa application is approved , you will receive your passport back with the visa affixed to one of its pages.

The visa will indicate the validity dates, duration of stay, and any specific restrictions or conditions. You are then authorized to travel to Norway and the other Schengen countries within the approved visa period.

Rejection of the Norwegian Schengen Visa

If your Norwegian Schengen Visa application is denied , the embassy or consulate has determined that you do not meet the requirements for the visa.

You will receive a written notification explaining the reasons for the denial. The reasons may include insufficient documentation, lack of financial means, doubts about the purpose of visit, or concerns about your intention to return to India.

In the case of a visa denial, you can appeal the decision within a specified time frame, if applicable. The appeal process involves submitting additional documentation or addressing the reasons for the denial in a written statement. It is essential to carefully review the denial letter and follow the instructions.

However, it's important to note that the decision to approve or deny a visa is ultimately at the discretion of the Norwegian embassy or consulate. Receiving a visa denial does not guarantee that an appeal will be successful.

In 2022:  Switzerland rejected 13,984 of 1,06,025 visas, though the country’s overall rejection rate was significantly lower than the average at 13%.  France rejected 19.9% or 27,681 of 1,38,643 visas and  Spain declined 14,852 or 18.5% of 80,098 visas.  Austria rejected 5,945 of 24,791 visas at a 24% rejection rate, while  Greece rejected 34.7% or 9,118 of 27,457 and  Portugal turned down 1,593 of 5,326 visas (29.9%).  Sweden got 27,775 applications, and rejected 5,110 or 18.7% of them.

Best countries for Schengen visas for India travellers

It might also help to know that  Germany ( check flights ) had the lowest rejection rate for Indians, having rejected only eight out of 6,345 Schengen visas at the Bengaluru consulate, one application in Kolkata and two in Chennai.  Italy ( check flights ) and  Hungary ( check flights ) were next in line, with rejection rates of 11.5% (794 of 6,909 visas rejected) and 12.1% (1,098 of 9,046 visas rejected) respectively.

Where does India stand in the Schengen visa market?

Consulates around the world recorded 75,72,755 short-term Schengen visa applications last year.  Türkiye has taken the first spot with the most number of requests (7,78,409) and  Russia comes second (6,87,239).  India stood at number three–with Indians making 6,71,928 uniform visa applications to the Schengen region in 2022. Out of these, 1,21,188 were declined at the rejection rate of 18%. This is higher than the average rejection rate across the world, which stands at 17.9%. Only  Algeria fared worse than India in terms of numbers, with 1,79,409 of total Schengen visa applications being rejected.

Is there a trend?

Visa patterns may change over years. The world saw a significantly larger volume of applications in 2022 as compared to the year before that. In 2021, only 29,26,104 applications were filed all over. And yet, the numbers still haven’t matched up to pre-covid years. That’s not the only thing–average visa rejection rates too have gone up in 2022 from 13.4% in 2021. But the bright spots were Sweden, which declined only 18.7% of visa requests from India last year, against 42.26% in 2021, and Switzerland, which also granted a lot more visas to Indians in 2022, with the rejection rate dropping to 13% last year from 21% in 2021. France too issued more Schengen visas to Indian travellers last year than in 2021, with its rejection rate dipping from 30.8% to 19.9%.

Update: These 4 Countries Were Most Likely to Reject a Schengen Visa Application in 2022

Only three Schengen Area Member States are responsible for rejecting 66.5 per cent of the total number of short-term visas rejected in 2021.

Out of the total 379,207 Schengen Visa applications rejected by the Member States, excluding Croatia which in 2021 wasn’t part of the Schengen yet, as many as 252,522 applications have been rejected by France, Germany and Spain, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

In fact, France has the largest share of rejected applications, after denying a visa to 128,672 applicants, out of the 652,331 applications its embassies worldwide received in the same year, or over 21 per cent of them.

This also makes France the EU country with the highest number of applications for short-term visas in 2021.

The second Schengen country with the highest number of rejected visa applications is Spain, which in 2021 received 483,469 applications in total, becoming the second country with the highest number of visa requests received.

Though Spain rejected a smaller share of the applications, 15.5 per cent, it is still the second country with the highest number of rejected visas, or as many as 69,863.

Third is listed Germany, which after receiving 346,284 applications, rejected 53,987 of them. Germany is also listed third in terms of the highest number of applications lodged at its embassies worldwide, Schengen Visa statistics reveal .

While these three countries have the highest number of rejected applications, the list changes when it comes to the Schengen countries that have rejected the highest shares of the applications they received. In this regard, the list goes as following:

  • Sweden rejected 30.6 per cent of the 22,260 applications it received
  • Norway rejected 26.2 per cent of the 9,895 applications it received
  • France rejected 21.1 per cent of the 652,331 applications it received
  • Denmark rejected 21.1 per cent of the 26,469 applications it received
  • Belgium rejected 20.4 per cent of the 50,796 applications it received

This means that Sweden, Norway, France, Denmark, and Belgium were the most likely countries to reject a Schengen visa in 2021 .

Whereas, regarding the countries that rejected the lowest number of visas, these are Luxembourg with only 29 (out of 2,383 applications received), Slovakia with 107 (out of 3,886) and Iceland with 259 (out of 2,735).

Regarding the lowest share of rejected applications, Luxembourg tops the list again with 1.2 per cent, followed by Slovakia with 2.7 per cent, and Lithuania with 2.8 per cent out of the applications rejected out of 24,764 processed.

In 2021, the number of Schengen visa applications filed at the Schengen embassies and consulates worldwide has plummeted by 83 per cent , compared to 2019, before the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Moreover, the difference in the number of visa applications lodged in 2021 compared to 2019 is even deeper than the difference in the number of applications filed in the first year of the pandemic, 2020, and the year before, when 82.7 per cent fewer applications were lodged.
