Traveling is ubiquitous in our lives. From day to day work commutes to going on a trip or vacation with our family or friends, we are constantly traveling. And we thank God that traveling has also been made easy. We can turn to many modes of transportation to bring us to our desired destinations. However, traveling still remains a stressful activity. We worry about safety, the sudden change in weather, missed flights, or lost luggage. The list of what can go wrong while traveling is endless and daunting. How and what can we do to deal when such a situation arises? We can turn to our God and say a quick prayer for safe travel. 

Biblical characters like Noah ( Genesis 7:1-24 ), Abraham ( Genesis 12:1-20 , Genesis 13:1-18 ), and Moses ( Exodus 4:18-31 ) have also embarked on several epic journeys. They would have fervently prayed for a safe journey and blessings. Similarly, we should also pray each time we go on a trip. I personally believe that prayer for safe travel is a powerful thing to do before any trip. By praying, we are inviting God and trusting Him that He will get us to our destination, safe and sound. Here is a short prayer for safe travel that you can say right before your trip.

Lord, I know that You watch my coming and going. Today, I pray for You to watch over me as I travel. Keep me safe in Your loving arms. Let no harm come upon me during my trip and cover me under Your mighty wings. As I step out and start on my journey, I will choose to trust you and not give in to fear. Traveling for the holidays can bring a lot of worry and anxiety. What if we break down? What if we get a flat tire? What if we get stranded outside of nowhere? What if we get lost? Even with all our modern conveniences like cell phones, GPS and services like Onstar, anxiety can still set in. Still, we need to trust above all else, that the Lord will keep us safe. We shall start out on our road trips like we do any other journey in life, trusting the Lord to lead us, guide us, and keep us safe. With him, we can never be lost, and we’ll always find our way back home.

In this post I’m going to share with you my favorite prayers for traveling mercies and protection.

These prayers have guided me safely to my destination on long journeys around the world and even on short road trips near my hometown. I hope they will give you protection on your travels as well.

Traveling Mercies Meaning

The term “traveling mercies” does not appear in the bible, but there are hundreds of examples of God showing mercy for others. Mercy is God’s compassion or concern for us even though it is within His power to punish or harm us.

A traveling mercies prayer is said for someone who is going on a trip or starting a big journey. In the 19th century, these prayers were commonly said for missionaires, preachers, and volunteers who were traveling on behalf of the church. During those times travel was dangerous and unpredictable.

Today, prayers for traveling mercies are said for anyone that is embarking on a journey, whether that be by plane, train, car, boat or even on foot.

While it is easier and faster to travel than it was in the 19th century, when this term became popular, there are still many dangers in foreign lands. We need God’s protection now more than ever and we ask for his mercy through prayer.

Sometimes, we travel for business purposes.

Like all prayers, when we pray for safe travels, we pray as God calls us to.  We can praise God and petition Him on our behalf and others.

God asks us to pray for all things, for all circumstances, and to come to Him for all our needs.

How Do You Pray for Those Who Are Traveling

We know that prayer is powerful and we should pray for all things (without ceasing). But what are some ways to pray for a safe trip for yourself or a loved one?

We can pray for our own safe travel. And we can pray for the safe travel of others.

When we pray for safe travels, we are not just asking for physical protection, but also for guidance, clarity, and a smooth path ahead.

It’s an acknowledgment of the uncertainties and challenges that can arise during travel and a humble request for a shield against those potential adversities.

This act of reaching out in prayer can provide a sense of comfort, reducing anxiety and instilling a feeling of being cared for by a benevolent force.

Pray for your own safe travels to bring God into your travel plans. Praise Him for the gifts of travel and petition Him for a safe journey. Pray that He will guide you on every step of your journey.

No matter the circumstance, we can always find wisdom, guidance, and comfort in the Word of God. 

If you are looking for a couple of verses of scripture to meditate on while you are praying for your own or someone else’s travel plans, here are 3 that I would recommend:

• the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Psalm 121:8 NIV
• For it is written: “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; Luke 4:10 NIV
• The Lord is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV

In praying for someone who is traveling, we want to ask God to wrap His full armor around them during every step of the way to their destination.

Here are just a few example prayers that you can pray for either your own travels or for the upcoming travels plans of a loved one.

Prayers for Safe Travel and Protection

In any endeavor we embark upon in life, we want God to protect us from any dangers that may come our way.

When traveling, these dangers can be anything from dangerous road conditions and storms, to mechanical malfunctions of the vehicle (or plane).

Pray this prayer to ask for God’s protection and watchful eye while you are traveling.

Pray for a loved one’s safe travels to show God’s care for them through your intercession.

Pray for God’s guidance on their journey and for those responsible for their safety such as pilots or bus drivers. Pray that He will watch over them on every step of their journey.

When a friend or loved one is traveling, the biggest act of love we can give them is to pray for them!

6 Encouraging Prayers For Safe Travel

T he older I get the more I understand why my parents wanted to know when I was going to be home and who I was riding with if I wasn’t driving.  They were concerned for my safety and well-being.  Whether I was walking down the street, taking a bus trip with school/church, or just driving to a local restaurant, safety was their number one concern.  I am so grateful for my parents and the values they have instilled in me.  Here are 6 encouraging prayers for you or your loved ones who are traveling.

The Long Haul

You know the road before me.  This is a long journey I am about to take.  I pray for a safe journey these 700 miles, Lord.  I pray that if any problems come my way that Your hand would be with me and guide me through them.  I pray for the other drivers on the road with me.  Father, I pray for good rest for us all and that cell phones will be put away so no distractions take our eyes off of the road.  Lord, You are mighty and I love You!  Amen

I’m The Passenger

I thank you so much for Your everlasting love for me!  Guide my friend, John, as he takes us to the convention this weekend.  The journey isn’t too long, but traffic will be a mess and trying to find parking may be a problem.  Father, guide his mind, hands and feet to deliver us safely to our destination.  I place this journey in Your hands.  I love You!  Amen

For Family Coming To My Place

I just want to say “thank You” to all of the men and women who are on the road every single day delivering goods to our stores so we have food and clothing.  Lord, they go through so much stress making sure their freight is delivered on time.  When hazardous conditions arise I pray You keep them safe.  When they are running behind, give them Your peace in the moment.  Father, I pray for safe journeys for our truck drivers.  Without them I don’t know where we would be.  I am so grateful for the time they put in on the road.  Father I pray that You also deliver them home safely to their families on their days off.  Father, You are so awesome and I love You!  Amen

I often wondered if there’s a prayer suitable for setting off for a journey or adventure. As I am not English native speaker, I pray in my mother tongue, but people from all over the world travel for ages and it seems that our fears remain the same.

What you can find below is a compilation of a few prayers I found online. You can pray by saying one (or more) of them, or combine favorite parts of different prayers into your own, personal one, as I do. Everything is up to you

Simple Prayers for A Safe Journey

(simple, straight from the heart, easy to remember – I like them most)

„In the name of God I go on this journey. May God the Father be with me, God the Son protect me, and God the Holy Ghost be by my side.  Amen. „ „Lord, be our guide and our protector on the journey we are about to take. Watch over us. Protect us from accidents. Keep us free from harm to body and soul. Lord, support us with Your grace when we are tired. Help us be patient in any trouble which may come our way. Keep us always mindful of Your presence and love. Amen. „

4 Prayers for Safe Travels and Journeys

As we have the ability to move from place to place easily by car, plane or train for business or pleasure, we may think traveling is a modern-day phenomenon. However, a closer look at Scripture shows us that travel and journeys are major themes in the Bible. Throughout both the Old and News Testaments, individuals such as Abram, Jesus and Paul, for example, regularly traveled.

We can learn much from Scripture for our journeying, whether for pleasure or purpose. In particular, the theme of travel and journeys can be applied to our spiritual lives as the Bible has much to say about our spiritual journeying.

Use the prayers below for your physical journeys, but also for the spiritual journeys of yourself and others.

Preparation for the Journey

The Hebrew verb nasa can mean to set out on the beginning of a journey. The verb is used primarily in this way in the Pentateuch , the first five books of the Bible. It refers to the journey of the Israelites — the start of their journey from Egypt, and the different stages of the journey when the pillar of cloud or fire indicated they should move on.

Most of us have time to prepare before we set out on a journey. But the picture of the Israelites waiting in Egypt for Pharaoh to let them go is of suddenly leaving with no preparation. Exodus 12:39 says: “...they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.”

Numbers 33 outlines the stages of the Israelites journey and the 42 times they packed up camp and set out again. It may be hard to imagine what it was like to pack up all one’s belongings — deciding what to take or leave behind, organize children, round up animals, pack food and water, and not be too exhausted to leave at the allotted time. They even had an alarm to get them going ( Numbers 10:2-6 )! We often find packing a suitcase for a few days to be tiring, and need to set an alarm when our journeys begin early.

Maybe you have never had to leave on a journey without any preparation, although perhaps at short notice. Or perhaps the only time you have had to pack up everything is to move house. Many people in our world have to set out with no preparation and leave everything behind. In particular, we think about those who flee because of war.

In all these situations, whether you are preparing for a pleasant journey, or have to suddenly leave because of dire circumstances, you can be reminded that God is watching over you as with the Israelites ( Exodus 12:42 ). This prayer is for you.

I thank You for watching over me as I prepare for all my journeys whether it is to take a vacation, travel for business, move house, or one which is thrust upon me unexpectedly. Thank You for Your constant vigil while I sleep, when I awake, and as I pack my suitcases. Give me the strength to prepare well for my journeys. When I feel fraught and tired, help me to stay calm knowing that You care for me.

Heavenly Father, I ask You to watch over men, women, and children who have to flee their homes with no preparation — those who are running away from harsh situations and from war, just like the Israelites had to run away from Egypt. I thank You that I can choose what to put in my suitcase, but I pray for those who have to put their whole lives in a suitcase, choosing what to take and what to leave behind. I ask You to care for these people who are destitute.

The Route for the Journey

The word for “road” or “way” in both the Old Testament ( derek ) and New Testament ( hodos ) can refer to a physical road ( Numbers 21:4 , Matthew 21:8 ) but also figuratively to the actions of a person and the direction they are taking.

In Deuteronomy, the Israelites were instructed to walk in the ways ( derek ) of the Lord ( Deuteronomy 10:12 ; 11:22; 19:9). Jesus used the word hodos in the following verse “I am the way ( hodos ) and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” ( John 14:6 ).

We usually do not set out on a journey without knowing the way we are going — having directions, planning the route, purchasing tickets, or other details. Even though we are careful in planning our journeys, they often come with obstacles. Delayed flights, inclement weather, and unwanted detours can present challenges and frustrations. It was the same in biblical times. The Israelites became impatient because they had to go around Edom ( Numbers 21:4 ). Jesus “had to go through Samaria” ( John 4:4 ), an unwanted route for most Jews who tried to avoid contact with Samaritans.

However, Jesus’ journey through Samaria gave Him the opportunity to share the truth of who he was with the woman at the well , and through her witness many more came to have faith in Jesus.

Use the prayer below as you plan your way for any physical journey you are taking and for opportunities to show the goodness of God. Pray over your spiritual journey as well. The prayer below is based on Psalm 119:26-32 . I have paraphrased it for you:

Heavenly Father,

As I plan the route of my next journey, whether for business or pleasure, I ask that each stage of the trip will go smoothly so I can get to my destination easily. When it does not, help me not to get frustrated and annoyed, but to see the opportunities you have given me to show Your goodness and kindness, just as Jesus did.

Lord God, just as I carefully plan the physical routes for any journey I am taking, teach me the importance of being intentional with Your ways for my life. Help me to understand Your instructions so I can meditate on and follow Your wonderful teachings. Keep me from going the wrong way, or making wrong decisions. In Your goodness, gently guide me. Today, I choose to be obedient and faithfully follow You.

The Journey

Journeys such as road trips, flights, train rides, and more often give the opportunity to talk and share with those with whom we are traveling, and with strangers. They also provide teaching moments, especially for children. Deuteronomy 11:19 says we are to teach God’s words to our children “when you walk along the road...” Our trips provide a chance to focus on and speak about spiritual things, but not just with children.

Jesus took the occasions of journeys to instruct his disciples and others during his ministry and after his resurrection . In particular, we are reminded of Jesus walking with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus as He “explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” ( Luke 24:13-32 ). There are many other occasions, too, when Jesus used His travels for instruction — not limited to Mark 2:23-28 , Mark 9:30-34 , Luke 19:1-6 .

Journeys also present the opportunity to show compassion and love to others, as with the parable of the Good Samaritan ( Luke 10:25-37 ).

Use this prayer for your upcoming journey, to look for chances to show kindness to others, to share the Gospel and your faith with family or friends traveling with you, and even with strangers you meet.

Help me to see the journeys I take as opportunities to show kindness, compassion, and Your mercy, just as Jesus did. I want to bring glory to You by sharing, encouraging, and teaching about Your love and goodness. Give me the chance to talk about what You have done for me and in my life. Help me to share my testimony and my faith with those I am in the car with, sit next to on the plane, and walk with on the road.

I thank You for the example of Jesus, who did so much of His teaching and healing while He was on journeys. Thank you that it is not just about the destination, but all that we can experience on the way. Just as You have walked with those through history who placed their trust in You, be with me and those I am traveling with today.

The Destination

When we travel and arrive at our destinations we are, in a sense, sojourners. We make a temporary stay in places that are foreign to us, whether they are other countries or different areas of our own country.

To sojourn is a familiar theme throughout the Bible from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Abraham, for example, was a sojourner when he lived in Canaan. He sojourned in other places too: Egypt due to the famine ( Genesis 12:10 ), Gerar ( Genesis 20:1 ), and the land of the Philistines ( Genesis 21:34 ).

All of God’s people were sojourners until they arrived in the Promised Land . Then God reminded them to respect the sojourners among them because they were once foreigners ( Exodus 23:9 , Deuteronomy 10:19 , Leviticus 19:33 ).

Jesus, too, lived like a sojourner when on this earth. He said: “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” ( Matthew 8:20 ). He also relied on the hospitality of others to provide a bed and food for him.

The Bible tells us we are foreigners when we don’t know Christ, but as Christians, we have become members of God’s household ( Ephesians 2:11-19 ). Even though we are considered strangers in this world ( Hebrews 11:13 , 1 Peter 2:11 ), we are to treat non-Christians well.

As you travel and take up temporary residence in different places, pray that you will be given good treatment and that, likewise, you can show God’s love and goodness to those who are strangers in your own communities and homes.

As I think about temporarily staying in another country, area, or someone’s home, not only do I hope to be treated well, but help me to be respectful to those around me who have different customs and behaviors than myself. I want to be a good witness for You in the way I behave, the actions I take, and the words I say. I also ask for Your continued protection and safety, remembering that Your concern for sojourners was not just for biblical times, but it extends to me today. Keep me and my traveling companions safe. May we be shown the hospitality that we want to extend to those who come into our homes or into our communities and country.

Father, I am full of anxiety because of the possibility of an airplane crash with another airplane in the crowded skies, or an airplane malfunction. Within my heart, I know that you are the one that is in charge of my life. I know that you will protect me from danger. Let your righteous right hand be on the pilot and the entire crew. Protection against Accidents Prayer Dear God, as I start this journey today, I ask for protection against any accidents that the enemy has planned for me. I take refuge under your wings. Your faithfulness is my shield and rampart. Lord, protect me and my fellow travelers against any and all dangers we might encounter. Send your angels before us to go and crush any harm that the enemy has planned in our path. Take control of the pilots and drivers so that everyone follows the rules and pays attention while they are in charge of the vehicle. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Good Weather Prayer Father, you are the maker of everything in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.  As we start this journey today, Lord, give us good weather.  May the weather be clear from our starting place to our destination, and may it continue being good even when we come back. Lift away every strong wind, storm, heavy rain, flood, and any other adverse weather element not just in this place but across the world so that every traveler can have a safe journey. The sun will not harm us by day, nor the moon by night as we travel. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

Lord, go before me and make everything work out for my good. I place my confidence in you because I know you are watching over me, and you never slumber. You are keeping me and everyone that is traveling from harm. Thank you, Father, for protecting me on my trip, and also when I return. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Traveling Anxieties Prayer Dear Father, I present my request for safe travels to you today. I am full of anxiety because I am about to embark on a long journey. But I refuse to let anxiety rob me of this chance you have given to me to explore the world and its beauty. Instead of fear, fill me with peace. As I go to different places in the world, let me find serenity in your beautiful creations. Holy Spirit, please always remind me that Jesus is with me everywhere I go. Let me find favor with the people I am traveling with, and those with whom I will be interacting during my journey. In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

Loved Ones Who Are Traveling Prayer Dear Lord, I want to thank you for my family and friends that have taken time out of their busy schedules to come and visit me. Lord, as I wait eagerly for them to arrive, I pray that you watch over them. I cover the cars and planes they are using to reach this me with the precious blood of Jesus. Lord, take charge of every means of transportation that they are using to come to visit me. May your angels guard them against danger or anxiety.  When they arrive safely, we will gather together and glorify your holy name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your Plans, Not Mine Prayer Father God, thank you for enabling me to see this day. I have been looking forward to it, and it is finally here. Lord, there are so many things I have planned for this journey, I have taken all the necessary precautions, but you are the only one that establishes our steps. Establish my steps from the time I leave this place to when I reach my final destination. Let your word be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Let this journey bring me closer to you. May grace and mercy be upon other travelers and me so that we may reach our final destinations safely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

It is a joyful experience, as along the path others join us, attracted by the company of God's children, singing the same songs of praise that angels sing, following a path worn down by tears and joy, and sacrifice. Our walk with God is never a lonely walk, for he walks with us, on a track that leads to a glorious destination.

For each step that I might take, Be my guide, O Lord of life. For each load that I might bear, Be my strength, O Lord of life. For each mountain I might face, Be my power, O Lord of life. For each river that might impede, Be my safety, O Lord of life. For each place where I might rest, Be my peace, O Lord of life. For each sunrise and sunset, Be my joy, O Lord of life.

Lord, we would grow with you, New shoots reaching out, Hands stretched upward, Like leaves newly formed, Soaking up your light and warmth. Lord, we would grow with you

Stepping out with you is an adventure, is stepping out into unknown places, following unmarked paths, facing uncertain dangers, meeting unpopular people. Stepping out with you is an adventure, in faith.

Let my eyes be your eyes, sharing compassion, warmth and love.

Let my hands be your hands, bringing healing with their touch.

Let my ears be your ears, listening where there is need.

Let my words be your words, bringing comfort joy and peace .

Use these hands to carry the burden. Use this voice to carry your word. Use these feet to walk in your footsteps. Use this heart to transform the world.

God of the journey, may you be both traveling companion and mountain guide on this, our daily walk; lest unprepared or ill-equipped our feet should stumble on uneven ground, or clouds obscure the destination that we so long to see.

In this busy world that we inhabit grant us space to rest awhile - by the still waters of your peace, to hear the whisper of your voice and feel the warmth of your breeze within our souls. Grant us space to rest awhile.

Prayer For A Journey

Dear Lord, I pray for all those out on the roads today. I pray that they will be more cautious and less distracted. Help us to navigate the jam-packed roads on our way to our destination. I pray you will release your angels around every vehicle on the road and that no accidents will occur. I ask that all those traveling will reach their destination safely. In your name, I pray. Amen.

I come before you Father God and confess my fears about traveling. I confess my insecurities about connections and times, My concerns for my safety and security, And my anxieties around this journey. I come to lay these things down and choose to put my trust in you. My faith will rise up and lead me through. My hopes will find light as I praise your name. My love will remain strong and firm holding me steady. My peace will be your peace, one that surpasses all these worries. You are with me. I am safe with you. Thank you. Amen.

Jesus, wherever I go, I give you praise I lift you high above each space. No matter where or how I ride You will be here with me. Whatever the time, your presence is here You hear my prayers, you're always near. If ever I feel alone I know You will be here with me. Whenever I call, upon your name I journey with you, I travel safe. For every moment you hold my hand You will be here with me.

Lord, be our guide and our protector on the journey we are about to take. Watch over us. Protect us from accidents. Save us from danger. Keep us free from harm to body and soul.

Lord, support us with your grace when we are tired. Help us be patient in any trouble which may come our way.

I pray that I will safely reach my destination, and that returning safe and sound, I will find my family in good health.

Keep us always mindful of your presence and love. Blessed are you, Lord our God, you who hear our prayers. Amen.

Dear Lord, I pray for safe travel in our car today. I ask that no unexpected mechanical or tire issues will occur. Please keep us safe on these crowded roads as well as the others we are sharing it with. As the driver, give me the discernment as to when to take breaks so that I do not push myself to the limit. Release your angels to surround us and protect us until we get to our final destination. In your name, I pray. Amen.

Please protect us on the journey we are about to take. Support us with Your strength and grace when we are weary. Help us to be mindful of Your presence and love in times of stress and guide us to make our time together meaningful and memorable. Amen.

O God, our heavenly Father, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: preserve those who travel; surround them with your loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey's end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
