QIAS has been involved in assessment, audit, and compliance work in the tourism sector for over 18 years as industry experts with experience in both Europe and Africa.

Working with TGCSA since 2010 (reappointed three successive times) through an ongoing business needs analysis programme, as part of the innovation and implementation forum, QIAS tailored a full solution to support the delivery of the Quality Assurance of South African Tourism Accommodation. Ensuring an enduring focus on continuous review and innovation, we delivered.

Through extensive research and consultancy lead by our current COO Ruth Robinson, QIAS were able to support TGCSA in driving participation numbers though several key projects.

Accolades & Standards Development

As a critical partner to TGCSA, QIAS played a central role in ensuring the work of TGCSA remained relevant, globally benchmarked, and abreast of technological developments affecting the sector and guest experience. A recognition mechanism geared towards shining a spotlight on niche market services and facilities, creating value for both product and consumers, accolades were introduced as part of an extensive triennial review and enhancement of the full TGCSA grading system and standards driven by Ruth and the wider QIAS/TGCSA team.

Basic Quality Verification

Having gained extensive insight via the launch of our own Safe, Clean & Legal™ accreditation, QIAS were able to provide TGCSA with a structured development programme to enable properties that did not meet minimum entry requirements of grading to access support and funding opportunities to develop their property’s offering qualified by a “Basic Quality Verification” with an objective to elevate the quality of product in the republic whilst also driving membership to meet the Core Requirements for formal grading over time.

Treeopia is an idyllic retreat, created for those who want to escape from a busy life, taking time out to relax and unwind in the peaceful surroundings of the Worcestershire countryside.

The site is built around a mature ash tree giving a unique and elevated living space that works with the tree’s architecture. The luxury treehouses are full of surprises, treats and no expense is spared in making sure your experience is one to remember.

Vivianna and Eathelin are set in 4 acres of beautiful and tranquil English countryside, each treehouse sits overlooking their own lake, brooks and surrounding woodland, abundant with wildlife.

Both have an open plan living area with a well-equipped bespoke kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms with super king divans, giving luxurious interior comfort, while outside there is a bbq/fire pit area for the outback cooks and lifestylers, you can lie back and relax in your own private hot tub and enjoy the surrounding wildlife or take a woodland walk with a picnic and relish the countryside.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Nicki from Treeopia wanted an accreditation to show guests that they were following Government guidelines and that they cared about visitor and staff safety in this uncertain time. The booking agency that they are with, Holiday Cottages, suggested that she look at the Safe, Clean & Legal™ accreditation with Quality in Tourism.

When asked about the experience of working with Quality in Tourism, Nicki explained how the assessors have been lovely, helpful and given lots of advice to help them understand and interpret the guidelines for their property.

Accommodation providers are given a set of cleaning protocols, sector specific guidelines and a risk assessment template to complete. The risk assessment is then returned for the assessor to review, before visiting on-site and talking through specific suggestions. Nicki said how she found this part of the process helpful as our assessor gave specific suggestions on certain areas of the properties.

Nicki has no doubt that the Safe, Clean & Legal™ accreditation will show guests that “Treeopia cares about both our guests and the staff that work here and I hope that this will boost consumer confidence to book with us directly.”

She continues “When the assessor arrived, it was a breath of fresh air, she was so supportive and full of helpful tips, it was lovely to actually speak to someone professional about COVID-19 rather than listening and reading all the conflicting and confusing news.

The Park Regis, Birmingham is the most distinctive 4* luxury hotel in the city. The hotel stands proud on the Birmingham skyline, with breathtaking views from the top, offering 253 guest rooms and suites, plus 11 function rooms for meetings, conferences and events.

To prepare the hotel for re-opening to visitors, John Angus, Managing Director identified the Quality in Tourism Safe, Clean & Legal™ accreditation as a useful tool to support their plans. We caught up with John to understand a little more about why he chose the scheme and the benefits it has brought for the hotel.

Why did you choose the Safe, Clean & Legal™ accreditation?

We felt the partnership between Quality in Tourism and The HBAA represented the markets that we were keen to cover. The opportunity to have the hotel audited by a professional, who could review all of our systems on site was key.

What did you think of the process and materials provided?

We felt the materials provided were very good. We did however have our own detailed SOP which made it a bit of a longer process.

Was there anything specifically that our assessor suggested that you found helpful?

Having someone actually walk around the hotel, reviewing the risk assessment with relevant members of the team was excellent. We found it really reassuring to know that a professional had supported us and checked our materials.

Was there anything you feel we could have done better?

The accreditation was excellent and we appreciated the speed. Overall, we were happy with the complete process.

How do you believe that this accreditation will help you in the future?

We wanted to give our guests the confidence that our venue is COVID-secure. We have spent 3 months preparing our hotel for the return of guests, it is great to have that recognised. We will be proud to display the accreditation as a pose to the various “self-certification” programmes that we will not rely on.
