Your Guide to Summer Camp Insurance

Hosting a summer camp can be a rewarding experience for everyone involved. However, you also need to ensure that you’re protected in the event of an injury or major accident. When children are involved, there’s usually a risk of something bad happening. Summer camp insurance offers the protection and peace of mind that you need.

So, what type of insurance do you need? Here’s your ultimate guide to summer camp insurance:

What Is Summer Camp Insurance?

Summer camp insurance is a form of insurance designed to provide coverage for a variety of activities and scenarios that may occur at a summer camp.

The specific types of coverage included with a summer camp insurance policy vary depending on the insurance company and its offerings. However, most policies include general liability coverage and property insurance.

Why Do You Need Summer Camp Insurance?

Getting summer camp insurance is often necessary for a variety of reasons. Obtaining insurance may be a requirement in some areas. It also offers financial protection should an accident occur.

A wide range of potentially hazardous activities typically take place at summer camps. Sports, outdoor adventures, and swimming activities carry their own sets of risks.

If someone is injured at your campground, you could be responsible for their medical expenses and other costs related to the injury. Your insurance helps protect you in these situations. The coverage limit can cover the cost of lawsuits that arise from injuries, accidents, and other incidents involving campers, staff, or visitors.

Your insurance can also protect your camp’s physical assets. If a fire or storm damages the roof of your property, your insurance can help cover the cost of repairs or replacement.

What Does Summer Camp Insurance Cover?

Summer camp insurance generally covers accidents and damage to your property. These events are covered by your general liability coverage and property insurance. However, there are many other forms of coverage available.

Common coverage options for summer camp insurance include:

  • General liability
  • Property insurance
  • Accident medical insurance
  • Workers’ compensation
  • Professional liability
  • Business interruption
  • Commercial auto insurance

Choosing the right summer camp insurance requires understanding the specific risks associated with your camp’s activities. You also need to consider your location and the age group of your campers. Older campers may be more prone to accidents, as they’re often more rambunctious and have a greater potential to create hazards.

Here’s a closer look at the coverage options typically available for summer camp insurance policies.

General Liability Coverage

General liability policies cover claims of bodily injury and property damage that occur at your camp. This is the main type of coverage included with most summer camp insurance policies.

Depending on the insurance company, you may receive a limit of $500,000 to $2,000,000 in general liability coverage per incident. This means that if someone suffers an injury, your general liability coverage will cover costs up to the limit of your policy.

Property Insurance

Property insurance protects your property, such as the buildings and equipment, from damage or loss due to fires, storms, or theft. Along with general liability insurance, this is one of the most essential types of coverage to get with your summer camp insurance.

Most property insurance policies cover damage due to unpreventable issues, including natural disasters. You often need to pay a deductible. However, the insurance company covers costs beyond your deductible.

Accident Medical Insurance

Accident medical insurance is a type of insurance that provides additional coverage for medical expenses if a camper is injured. It covers accidents that occur during camp activities. It also helps cover costs not covered by personal insurance. You may also find that this insurance covers accidents not covered by your general liability coverage.

Workers’ Compensation Insurance

Workers’ compensation insurance is a necessary form of coverage for summer camps with employed staff. If a staff member becomes injured, your workers’ compensation policy can help pay their medical bills.

Professional Liability Insurance

Professional liability insurance is used to cover claims related to professional misconduct or failure to perform professional duties. For example, if a parent were to file a lawsuit claiming that your camp failed to provide the experience promised, your professional liability insurance can offer protection.

Abuse and Molestation Coverage

Abuse and molestation coverage protects the camp in cases where a staff member is accused of abuse. It’s critical coverage due to the sensitive nature of working with children. Abuse is also unlikely to be covered by your general liability insurance.

Business Interruption Insurance

If your camp must close due to a covered loss, this type of insurance can help cover lost income and expenses. You can receive payment to help cover your costs during the closure, which may include paying your staff, covering utility bills, and other payments.

Commercial Auto Insurance

If your summer camp owns or operates vehicles for transporting campers or large equipment, you may need separate commercial auto insurance. Commercial auto insurance covers damages and injuries that occur when operating a commercial vehicle, such as a commercial van.

Where to Get Summer Camp Insurance

Obtaining summer camp insurance requires you to contact insurance companies or insurance brokers with commercial offerings. These companies may specialize in commercial insurance, including insurance solutions for camps and recreational organizations.

Here are three of the top companies that offer summer camp insurance:

Great American Insurance Group

Woman filling Accident report

If you run a summer camp, you’re going to need summer camp insurance. Your insurance protects you in the event that an accident happens at your campground. You can get coverage for injuries and damage to your property.

When selecting an insurance provider, it’s important to ensure that they have experience with summer camps or similar recreational organizations. You should also review the specifics of their coverage options. Make sure that their offerings match the needs of your camp.

Compare quotes from multiple insurers to find the best coverage at a reasonable price. Check the insurer’s financial stability and customer service reputation to ensure they can provide reliable support and payout claims.

Keep these details in mind as you compare coverage options, get quotes, and choose a policy for your summer camp.

If you are operating a sports camp there are a number of things that you should get cover for as a priority.

Public Liability

This will cover any costs that are incurred if the camp was blamed for injury to a member of the public or for damage to their property. If that third-party decided to sue the business, your insurance would take care of the legal costs.

Equipment Cover

As a sports camp it’s likely that you will be using a variety of different things, such as balls, rackets, cones and goals. By adding equipment cover to your policy you ensure that your tools of the trade are protected against loss, damage or theft.

Professional Indemnity

Like Public Liability, having Professional Indemnity covers you if the business is blamed for property damage or injury, but it covers professional advice given by the business or it’s staff.

Employers' Liability

If you employ members of staff, it is a legal requirement to obtain Employers’ Liability. This covers the business should a member of staff blame it for injury or property damage.

Summer Camp Insurance Options

summer camp insurance options

Of course, Regpack is one of the best resources for getting people registered for your camp, but what about your other specific needs? One big thing that you should be thinking about is insurance. Camp is supposed to be a time for new friends, new skills, and fun. If – perish the thought – there should be an accident or other event at your camp, how would you pay for it?

Fortunately, there are a lot of different options in the insurance industry for covering your camp, your campers, and your staff. If you don’t own the camp that your organization is using, whoever owns the camp may already have some kind of insurance. If you are renting a camp, talk to the owner to see what insurance they may already have and what insurance you may still need.

1. Property Insurance

Property insurance insures permanent structures and some other items in the event that they may be damaged or stolen. Some property insurance policies cover the entire cost of the damaged structures or items, but others will only repay a partial amount and only under certain circumstances. Because there are so many different kinds of property insurance, you should be sure to understand your policy before you begin using the camp.

If you don’t own the camp, the owner of the camp probably already has property insurance. If this is the case, talk to the camp owner to understand how the policy treats camp renters, as well as other intricacies.

2. Specialty Insurance

Specialty insurance is similar to property insurance but typically covers larger items, like watercraft. It can also cover items in events that are not typically covered under other insurance policies. If these potentially expensive items are owned by the camp it is not your responsibility to insure them. If you rent these items from a vendor, they are probably already insured. You are only likely to need this kind of insurance if your organization owns these big-ticket items.

3. Special Event Insurance

Special Event Insurance is similar to specialty insurance in that it is a very flexible term that can be used in fairly unique circumstances. This kind of insurance is good for organizations that are doing something that they don’t usually do, or don’t do often. It can be helpful because it is good at weaving in between things that are already covered by various policies and by various holders. It can also be very time-consuming and expensive to set up a policy, however, so if your camp is a main feature of your organization, it might not be right for you.

4. Personal Property Insurance

Personal Property Insurance, also called renters insurance, is similar to property insurance but does not insure fixed structures. This is another kind of insurance that the camp owner might have, but it is likely to only protect things owned by the camp. If there are any expensive items that your organization will be using at the camp, you may need this kind of insurance to protect those items.

It is also possible that your organization already has some degree of coverage in this area. If that is the case, you should understand what coverage your organization already has before seeking additional coverage.

5. General Liability Insurance

General Liability coverage is the kind of insurance that protects an organization if an individual is injured on their grounds or during their activity.

This is another kind of insurance that you may not need if your organization does not own the camp that it is using for its outdoor activities. The camp owner may have general liability insurance, but you should be sure that this insurance covers renters.

There’s also a possibility that your organization already has general liability insurance. The same general liability insurance that protects your organization at the office may also protect it at camp. It’s important to understand your organization’s existing general liability insurance coverage. You don’t want to pay extra for coverage you already have, but you also don’t want to assume that you have coverage in a new place.

6. Participation/Volunteer Insurance

Participant/Volunteer Insurance is similar to general liability insurance, though it doesn’t require anyone to be legally “at fault.” In the case of general liability insurance, someone needs to be found legally “at fault” in order for insurance to pay out. In the case of the camp, it is usually the organization hosting the campers or whoever owns the physical camp.

Having participant/volunteer insurance instead of general liability insurance can result in faster payouts, and can prevent costs from going up in the event of a claim.

7. Workers Compensation

Workers Compensation protects employees who are injured on the job by paying their medical bills and at least a portion of any wages that they may lose while they are injured. It also protects your organization from being sued by workers who are injured on the job.

This is a kind of insurance that you should think about regardless of whether or not your organization owns the camp that it uses. Even if the camp owner has workers compensation insurance, it won’t protect renters – only people who work directly for the organization.

However, this is another form of insurance that your organization might already have. You’ll need to be familiar with your organization’s policy to understand how it works in relation to workers away from the office, volunteers, &c. For example, if your camp is staffed by volunteers, you may not need workers compensation because volunteers don’t suffer wage loss when injured and any medical needs may already be covered by general liability insurance or participant/volunteer insurance.

8. Vehicle Liability Insurance

Vehicle Liability Insurance covers vehicles in the event of various situations or hazards. For small operations, you are likely already covered. This kind of insurance is more commonly known as “Car insurance,” and most people have some form of it already. If you get your campers to camp in cars owned by your organization, or if the campers get there on their own, you don’t need to worry about this kind of insurance.

However, if you are using a larger vehicle, like a bus, to get your campers to camp, these vehicles may require special kinds of insurance. Of course, it’s probably been taken care of already by whoever owns the bus, like a bus company, the camp, or your organization. In the end, vehicle liability insurance is more of a box that you need to check than a check you need to write. You should know that all vehicles are insured appropriately, by whom, and what that insurance covers, but it probably won’t be an additional expense.

9. Business Interruption Insurance

Business Interruption Insurance covers the profit that a business might lose in the event of some kind of disaster. If you are a non-profit organization, you may not be liable for business interruption insurance. Further, business interruption insurance may be owned by whoever owns the physical camp, but then it’s not really your business … unless you own the camp. It’s a little complicated. In short, you only need business interruption insurance for your camp if you own the camp and run it on a for-profit basis. Then, if you have insurance, you can make a claim if you can’t open the camp because of something like a flood or a fire.

10. Management Liability Insurance

Management Liability Insurance protects the managers of your organization from lawsuits in the event of mismanagement or other crimes of a corporate or criminal nature. Many organizations already have management liability insurance as part of a larger business owner’s policy, but there are also insurance companies that sell these policies to non-profits.

Your organization should have some form of management liability insurance, but there’s a good chance that it already does.

Camp Insurance Providers

The kind of insurance that you get isn’t all that matters. Going with a good insurance provider can make all of the difference. While we encourage you to shop around, these are a few providers that we may recommend.

Markel Insurance

Markel Insurance has been in the camp business for a long time. They offer a number of comprehensive packages for whatever insurance needs your organization may need to provide the best camp experience. Their website is also a great place to learn about the intricacies of camp coverage.

Trusted Choice

Trusted Choice offers a great general liability policy including bodily injury, property liability and medical payments as well as camp and staff accidental medical insurance.

K&K Insurance

K&K Insurance offers policies for activity camps, boy scouts, conference centers, day camps, leadership camps, learning camps, religious retreats, resident camps, summer camps and more. Their policies include general liability, property, and more. They “take fun seriously”!

Travmark has a great resource on the top things to know when buying summer camp insurance which is a great resource to all Camp Operators. They also offer camp accident coverage and liability insurance coverage.

Other Providers

Most major insurance companies offer some of the services mentioned above. If your organization already has some kind of insurance packages, consider talking to your current provider. It may be cheaper to insure your camp activities through the same provider that ensures other aspects of your organization.

Final Thoughts

Finding the right coverage for your organization’s camp can take a long time and involve contacting a large number of people. It’s important to have all of your documents in order well in advance to give yourself all of the time that you need to shop around with different providers to get the best option at the best price. Summer camp insurance covers all your bases, unexpected events, and possible outcomes. Whether you run a day camp, overnight camp, or a specialty camp like sports camps and technical camps, protect yourself, your campers, and your employees with the right insurance.

father and son camping

Travel insurance can save you from costly rental car fees.

Renting a car for your big camping trip? There are two hazards to look out for. One is getting overcharged at the rental counter, when you may feel pressured to spend a ton on optional insurance. The other is accidentally scraping or denting your rental car, then getting a huge bill for the damage.

Here’s one solution to both problems: the OneTrip Rental Car Protector from Allianz Travel Insurance. This super-affordable rental car insurance provides primary coverage for covered collision, loss and damage up to $50,000, along with trip interruption and baggage coverage, for only $11 per calendar day.

Travel insurance can be there when you really, really need some help.

If you’re an experienced camper,  you know that sometimes, things happen that you could never predict. Maybe bad weather strands you on an uninhabited island. Maybe you dropped your car keys somewhere on the trail, and the nearest Lyft is 50 miles away.

If you’re facing a situation that you just don’t know how to handle, call 24-Hour Hotline Assistance. This benefit, included with every plan from Allianz Travel Insurance, connects you with an elite team of travel experts who can help you solve all kinds of travel dilemmas. They can assist with new travel arrangements, help you replace travel documents, connect you with loved ones back home, and much more.

Make sure you download the Allyz TravelSmart app from Allianz Travel Insurance before you go. This free app lets you contact emergency assistance, manage your policy, get coverage details and file a claim, among other uses.

Summer & Sports Camp Insurance: Cost & Quotes From $45/month

Home › Business Insurance › Summer & Sports Camp Insurance: Cost & Quotes From $45/month

Summer and sports camps are where parents take their children to unwind and get along with other kids during the summer. Activities here such as basketball , tennis, painting, capture the flag, and bike rides help children’s development and growth.

It’s not smart to own a summer or sports camp without having the right coverage. The kids are your responsibility while they’re on the premises. What if someone gets hit by a ball during a tennis coaching session? What if a child falls from a height while playing in the playground ? Yep, summer camps and insurance go hand-in-hand.

Summer and sports camp insurance might be the insurance package you’re looking for. Read this guide to know what policies are included, how much premiums cost, and the best companies.

What Does Camp Insurance Cover?

Camp insurance is a type of insurance that is specifically designed for summer and sports camps. It covers various protections, including:

Liability Coverage –Liability coverage is one of the most important types of insurance for summer and sports camps. It provides coverage for injuries or property damage at the camp

Commercial Property Damage Coverage – Property damage coverage covers damage to the camp’s property, such as buildings, equipment, and supplies

General Liability Insurance for Summer and Sports Camps

General liability insurance is a type of insurance that provides coverage for accidents and injuries that may occur at the camp. This will cover the medical treatment of the injured kid. This youth summer camp insurance policy can also help if someone losses a property due to an accident in your summer camp. General liability insurance can also cover attorney fees and other legal costs if parents and other concerned parties decide to sue. Use the table above to see which insurance company offers the best general liability insurance for sports camps.

Does General Liability Insurance Only Cover Accidents and Injuries?

Aside from bodily injuries and property damage, your summer camp can also use general liability insurance to cover claims for copyright infringement, slander, libel, and related offenses filed by another business.

Professional Liability Insurance for Summer and Sports Camps

Professional liability insurance covers errors and omissions that may occur at the camp. Particularly, you can leverage this policy if a parent or any other party decides to sue for negligence, inaccurate advice, and other related offenses.

In What Situations Can Professional Liability Insurance Help?

Here are some situations where professional liability insurance can help:

A child sustains an injury due to the instructor’s erroneous advice during a basketball training session in your summer camp

A child gets lost while dwelling on the premises of your summer camp

Use the table above to see which insurance company offers the best commercial property insurance.

How Much Coverage Do You Need?

It’s designed for small businesses and provides comprehensive coverage at an affordable price. Use the table above to see which insurance company offers the best business owner’s policy for sports and summer camps.

Shoulder repair expenses if your camp’s van or bus sustained damage due to collision, weather, or any other covered peril

Great platform. Terrible policy. There is no teeth behind it. No coverage. It's a fake policy that they sell. Sold us an EPLI policy that later we came to find out had no EPLI coverage. 7 Best Cheap Travel Insurance Companies in July 2024

Profile photo of Sean Cudahy

Many, or all, of the products featured on this page are from our advertising partners who compensate us when you take certain actions on our website or click to take an action on their website. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Finding the cheapest travel insurance is often a priority for travelers hoping to protect themselves and their finances while away from home.

But is it better to err on the side of affordable travel insurance or opt for a more comprehensive plan? That depends on your needs .

On average, a comprehensive plan that covers some combination of trip cancellation and interruption costs, medical coverage and baggage protection (and perhaps a number of other things) will cost you 5%-10% of what you paid for the trip, according to NerdWallet partner Squaremouth, a travel insurance marketplace.

That means a comprehensive policy for a trip that costs you $3,000 could run you anywhere between $150 and $300. Factors like the cost and length of your trip, the age of the travelers and how much protection you want can significantly influence what you pay for your plan.

Ultimately, Squaremouth recommends “the least expensive policy that offers the coverage [travelers] need.”

Factors we considered when picking cheap travel insurance plans

We considered a few factors as we looked for the most affordable travel insurance plans.

Price: If your goal is to find cheaper travel insurance, you want the price to be affordable.

Breadth of coverage: The best budget travel insurance is typically going to be a plan that offers a wide range of protections at an affordable cost, ensuring you’re protected with at least some coverage for a wide range of scenarios.

Uniqueness or customizability : While many travel insurance plans have similar protections, some stand out for particular coverage that can be helpful to certain travelers, like those needing to Cancel For Any Reason , those going on a cruise, or travelers with preexisting health conditions. We didn’t spring for the priciest plans with broad, deep coverage; instead, we picked those that meet a sort of budget "sweet spot" when it comes to cost efficiency.

An overview of the best cheap travel insurance plans

We looked at travel insurance quotes for a hypothetical 10-day trip to Italy in October 2023. The traveler is a 40-year-old man living in North Carolina who spent $2,000 on the trip, including airfare.

Reliable but cheap travel insurance providers

1. axa assistance usa (silver plan: $70).

summer camp travel insurance

Why we picked it:

The $500 missed connection benefit is great for cruise and tour participants. It covers additional transportation, accommodations and meal costs when you miss a cruise or tour departure.

Full trip cancellation and interruption coverage, along with up to $25,000 for out-of-pocket medical costs and baggage coverage.

Among the lowest prices we found.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more than AXA's $70 Silver plan, a Gold plan only costs $19 more and gets you deeper coverage amounts and up to $35,000 in collision rental car insurance.

2. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (ExactCare Value plan: $56)

summer camp travel insurance

Cheapest plan we found while still offering a wide array of protections.

Includes a preexisting medical condition waiver.

Add-on rental car collision coverage optional for $10 per day. You can pick how many days you want the additional coverage — it’s not all or nothing.

At $56, this plan comes in at less than 3% of the $2,000 trip cost.

3. IMG (iTravelInsured Lite plan: $77)

summer camp travel insurance

Treats COVID-19 like any other illness, which is to say, if your claim accepts flu, strep throat or appendicitis as an acceptable, covered condition, the coronavirus is, too.

Covers costs related to trip interruption up to 125%

Higher than normal limits on dental expenses, at $1,000. If your teeth are your Achilles heel (or your biggest fear), this plan might be for you.

The iTravelInsured Lite plan doesn’t offer some of the bells and whistles that other plans do, like rental car coverage , Cancel For Any Reason coverage or waivers for pre-existing conditions. But you’ll have relatively solid across-the-board trip protections.

4. John Hancock (Silver plan: $93 for a mid-tier plan)

summer camp travel insurance

Mid-level plan (as opposed to a basic plan) at an affordable price for travelers who want more coverage without paying too much.

Includes an optional Cancel For Any Reason add-on for travelers wanting flexibility. It is a bit pricey, at half the cost of the insurance ($46.50 extra for a $93 plan).

Reimburses up to $1,000 for lost baggage , far more than many basic plans.

Add-on rental car coverage for $9 per day.

At $88, John Hancock’s basic (Bronze) plan isn’t particularly affordable. But for just $4 extra, you can tap into the benefits of a mid-tier plan at still less than 5% of the total trip cost.

5. Nationwide (Essential plan: $76)

summer camp travel insurance

Includes a preexisting conditions waiver.

Add-on rental car coverage for $90.

Covers trip interruption at 125% of the trip cost while providing comprehensive emergency medical and baggage coverage.

6. Seven Corners (Basic plan: $75)

summer camp travel insurance

On top of standard trip protections, it includes a relatively affordable Cancel For Any Reason option for $31.50 extra.

If you plan to rent expensive sporting equipment, you might consider paying $10 extra to cover lost, damaged, stolen or destroyed gear.

COVID-19 coverage reimburses you for costs incurred if you have to quarantine .

Rental car coverage comes in at an affordable $7 per day.

Seven Corners’ Basic plan stands out because it offers a little bit of everything, appealing to athletic travelers, those who need affordable trip protections, those who want the flexibility to cancel for any reason and those still concerned about getting quarantined due to COVID-19.

7. Travelex Insurance Services (Basic plan: $71)

summer camp travel insurance

Straightforward: What you see is what you get. This plan’s coverage has fewer rules and caveats than many.

While not sporting the highest coverage amounts, it offers a solid range of protections to ensure you get at least something back when your travel is disrupted or you have a medical emergency.

Offers add-on rental car coverage for $10 per day.

At $71, the Travelex Basic plan’s cost is just over 3% of the $2,000 trip’s cost.

If you want to get travel insurance at the cheapest possible rate, here’s a trick. Put $0 as your trip cost, Stan Stanberg, co-founder of comparison site Travelinsurance.com said in an email.

“When excluding trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage the cost of a travel insurance plan goes down significantly,” Stanberg said.

That means you won’t get reimbursed if you need to cancel your trip or if it gets interrupted. But you may still have access to the plan’s medical, trip delay , missed connection, baggage and other protections.

You’ll often find comprehensive travel insurance plans cost 5%-10% of your total trip cost, according to Squaremouth. This will often get you full trip cancellation and trip protection, baggage protection, emergency medical coverage and often other benefits.

Typically, the more you pay, the broader and deeper the coverage.

For many plans, you can purchase travel insurance up until you depart. However, to get access to the most protections possible, booking two days to two weeks after making your initial deposit is the best rule of thumb.

That means you won’t get reimbursed if you need to cancel your trip or if it gets interrupted. But you may still have access to the plan’s medical,

, missed connection, baggage and other protections.

Camp Insurance

No matter what kind of camp you run, it must be protected against losses related to lawsuits, equipment failure, accidents, and more.

Little kids playing soccer outside at summer sports camp. Find Camp Insurance.

Camps are a great opportunity for kids and adults alike to get out of the house, explore, learn, and have fun. But as the camp owner or director, you have to consider the risks that come along with the trade. Camp owners can face lawsuits, property damage, theft, and other disasters that can lead to hefty losses. That's why having the right camp insurance is critical.

Luckily, an independent insurance agent can help you get set up with the right kind of camp insurance. They'll get your specific camp matched to all the coverage it needs. Until then, here's a breakdown of camp insurance, what it covers, why it's necessary, and more.

Top Liability Risks for Camps

Unfortunately, camps aren't immune to many different kinds of lawsuits. No matter what kind of camp you run, you likely have the following major liability risks to consider:

  • Premises liability:  Camp owners have a responsibility to review their activities and inspect their grounds and facilities to reduce the risk of injuries to the campers, staff, and visitors.
  • Failure to perform background checks:  Camp owners must conduct background checks on their employees, volunteers, and counselors. If they don’t, they can be held liable for any harmful acts committed to third parties during the program.
  • Risk of injuries:  Camp owners can be held responsible for camper injuries during high-risk activities like football or jousting, even if a waiver was signed.

Just one unexpected lawsuit could set your camp back thousands of dollars or even more without the proper protection. That's why the liability coverage provided by camp insurance is essential.

Who Needs Camp Insurance?

Pretty much any kind of camp can benefit from having camp insurance, which is a special form of business insurance . However, depending on the specific activities and conditions present at your unique camp, your coverage needs can vary. You likely need at least some form of camp insurance if you own or run any of the following:

  • Scout camps
  • Summer camps
  • Youth sports camps
  • Sports camps
  • Conference centers
  • Travel or adventure camps
  • Boys & Girls Clubs
  • Campfire USA camps
  • Resident camps
  • Special needs camps

An independent insurance agent can help you identify the risks present in your specific camp and get you matched to a policy that addresses any potential losses.

What Does Camp Insurance Cover?

Camp insurance is designed to protect you from a number of angles. Whether you run a summer camp, band camp, youth sports camp, or scout camp, it must be covered against liability, property damage, theft, and much more. A complete camp insurance policy is likely to include the following types of coverage:

  • General liability insurance: Covers costs associated with lawsuits arising from third-party claims of injuries or property damage caused by or at your camp.
  • Commercial property insurance: Covers the cost of lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed camp property, including buildings and equipment.
  • Premises liability insurance:  Pays medical expenses and lawsuit costs stemming from third parties who get injured or suffer property damage on your campgrounds due to unsafe premises.
  • Equipment breakdown insurance: Covers the cost of repairs or replacements to camp equipment and machinery that breaks down due to a covered cause, as well as lost income during necessary operations suspensions.
  • Loss of income insurance:  Replaces lost income and pays continued expenses such as employee wages if your camp operations are suspended due to a covered loss like extensive fire damage.
  • Commercial vehicle insurance:  Covers cars, buses, trucks, or other camp vehicles used for business purposes against costs associated with theft, accidents, lawsuits, and more.
  • Workers' compensation insurance:  Covers your camp employees if they get injured, ill, or die as a result of job-related activities, including paying for medical treatments and a portion of lost wages if the employee cannot return to work.
  • Professional liability insurance: Reimburses you for costs associated with lawsuits stemming from third-party claims of harm caused by professional services provided by your camp.
  • Inland marine insurance: Pays to repair or replace stolen, damaged, lost, or destroyed camp property if an incident occurs while it's in transit.
  • Cyber liability insurance: Reimburses you for costs associated with incidents of data breaches or cyber-attacks that may expose, sell, or distribute private or sensitive data.
  • Crime insurance: Pays for losses associated with acts of crime against your camp, including those committed by employees.
  • Employment practices liability insurance: Reimburses you for the cost of lawsuits stemming from camp employee claims of discrimination, sexual harassment, wrongful termination, etc.
  • Hired or non-owner car insurance: Covers costs related to incidents involving camp employees' personal vehicles used for camp-related activities.
  • Umbrella insurance: Extends your camp's existing liability insurance to limits of $1 million or greater to help pay for hefty lawsuits.

An independent insurance agent can help you assemble a complete camp insurance policy based on the risks of your specific programs, etc.

Accidental Medical Insurance for Campers and Staff

Accidents often happen at camp, but an accidental medical group insurance policy can provide medical care compensation if necessary. Group accidental medical coverage usually covers injuries or illnesses that happen while at camp or those that start at camp and continue for some time.

Some policies also cover dental injuries. This coverage normally comes packaged either as primary medical coverage or as a policy that pays excess benefits for those already insured by individual personal insurance.

Primary medical coverage

  • Necessary for groups that may not already have accident or health insurance
  • Pays claims first after an accident
  • Pays covered claims even if you have other insurance

Excess medical coverage

  • Generally covers personal plan deductibles, coinsurance, or expenses left over after your personal plan pays claims
  • Applicable to groups who are already covered by other insurance
  • Offers payouts even after your personal coverage pays for a claim
  • Coverage is not as extensive as personal insurance

With an accidental medical policy, you can choose to cover staff and campers or just campers. Typically, this insurance covers all sponsored and supported activities of the camp and travel to and from camp activities unless otherwise excluded from your policy.

How Much Does Camp Insurance Cost?

The cost of camp insurance can vary as considerably as the type of camp in question. Typically, the cost of coverage can depend on:

  • The type of camp
  • The location and size of the camp
  • The number of camp attendees
  • The number of camp employees, staff, and volunteers
  • The activities present at your camp
  • Specific potential risks at your camp, such as pools, lakes, or trampolines
  • Your camp's prior claims history

Regardless of what type of camp you run, an independent insurance agent can help you find the most affordable camp insurance near you.
