Table of Contents

Packing light in the winter is harder than packing light in the summer. That’s a fact. On cold-weather trips, you’ll need heavier clothes, more layers, and extra accessories. Your winter packing list should take this into account while still being short enough for everything to fit in your carry on bag .

Just because you need a coat and hat doesn’t mean you have to check a bag. But it does mean you’ll have to carefully plan what to bring.

Whether you’re headed somewhere colder for the holidays or going skiing in Hokkaido, here’s how to pack light for winter travel.

Bring everything you need without checking a bag.

  • Comfortable to carry

How to Pack for Cold Weather

Before we get to the packing list , let’s start with two basic principles of packing light. Four of the Seven Secrets to Packing Light take precedence when you’re prepping for a winter trip.

Pack Layers, Not Bulk

First, pack in layers, not bulk. Heavy sweaters and sweatshirts can take up a lot of space in your luggage.

Dress in thinner, insulating layers. Think base layers, long-sleeve t-shirts, and thin sweaters.

The individual layers will take up less space in your bag and give you more clothing options. We discussed this strategy at length in our article on  packing for an around-the-world trip .

If It’s Bulky, Wear It

Next, wear your heaviest stuff. Let’s say you have a heavy sweater that you love and want to bring on your trip. That’s okay. But you should only bring one and should wear it on the plane. Wear, don’t pack, your heaviest stuff. Wearing that sweater rather than packing it will save space in your luggage.

Of course, this also applies to your winter coat. Wear it onto the plane, even if you don’t plan to wear it throughout the flight. Take it off and stuff it in the overhead bin when you get warm.

Pack Your Lightest Pair of Shoes

For a winter trip, you might want a pair of boots to keep your feet warm, especially if you’ll be doing any outdoor activities.

Wear your boots. Don’t pack them. If you need a second pair of shoes, make sure they’re smaller and lighter than your boots. Pack that pair.

Wear the Right Fabrics

Wearing high-performance fabrics, whether natural or synthetic, is important in more extreme weather. In winter, wear wool for its high warmth-to-weight ratio.

Merino wool is “nature’s performance fabric” for its temperature-regulating and anti-odor properties. You might already own a wool sweater. We recommend merino wool for socks and base layers .

If you follow these rules, you’ll be able to pack for a cold-weather trip in a carry on .

Winter Packing List

The winter clothes you choose to travel in might be different than the ones you wear in cold weather back at home. Great winter travel clothes will pack down compactly, rather than adding unnecessary bulk to your bag. They’ll also hold up to the environment, since you’ll likely spend more time outdoors than normal. Finally, your winter travel wear should be easy to layer and to wear across multiple days and situations.

For cold-weather trips, here’s what you should pack.

Fitted Sweaters (1-2)

I live in San Francisco , so I already wear sweaters every day of the year. When I travel, I leave my fun, oversized sweaters at home and pack my fitted sweaters instead.

Lightweight merino wool, cashmere, or cotton sweaters will pack most easily.

Read the buyer’s guide to travel sweaters and sweatshirts.

Long and Short-Sleeved T-Shirts (2-3)

The best winter travel clothes are the ones that layer well. In addition to your sweaters, pack two to three tops to serve as your first layer.

Choose a mix of long and short sleeves, so you can be just as ready for a full day in freezing weather as you are for an evening by a cozy fire.

Read the buyer’s guide to travel t-shirts .

Base Layers

Pack a lightweight pair of long underwear (leggings and long-sleeve shirt) to make any outfit warmer. Any brand that makes good merino wool clothes will also make good base layers.

Smartwool sells multiple options, including long underwear and leggings, for men and women .

A warm, insulating base layer can be worm even under warm clothes like a sweater and jeans, especially if you’ll be outside.

Read the buyer’s guide to women’s base layers .

Bottoms / Pants (2)

For cold weather trips in urban areas, I’ll usually pack a pair of pants or leggings, a mid-length skirt, and warm, wool-lined tights. Jeans are also fine for winter travel, though not ideal if there’s any snow in the forecast.

Read the buyer’s guides to travel jeans , leggings , and men’s pants .

Down Jacket

Down jackets are the best coats for winter travel. They pack down small when not in use, are warm for their size, and will be more weather-resistant than more fashion-forward coats.

We recommend brands like Patagonia , Arc’teryx , and Columbia for well-made down jackets that will last through years of adventures.

Uniqlo’s Ultra Light Down is a good budget-friendly option for mild weather.

Read the buyer’s guide to winter travel jackets .

Warm, Lightweight Scarf

A scarf is a winter packing must. While you won’t want to sacrifice warmth, you do want a scarf that won’t take up too much room in your pack. A lightweight jersey or merino wool scarf will give you warmth without bulk.

Read the buyer’s guide to travel scarves .

Hat and Gloves

Wear a  wool or wool-blend beanie to keep your head warm and to retain heat.

For a different look, try the  Outdoor Research Transcendent Beanie  ($45), a down jacket on your head that packs down small enough to fit in your pocket.

Shoes: Boots and Sneakers (1-2)

For cold-weather travel, opt for a waterproof or water-resistant, neutral-colored pair of boots that pair well with all of your outfits.

If you’re looking for a new pair, Sorel is my go-to brand for both men and women for waterproof, winter-ready boots that actually look stylish.

Menswear site  Put This On  says,  “For minimum slippage on snow and ice, you want an outsole that is relatively soft with maximum tread.” In other words, choose boots with rubber, not leather, soles for inclement weather.

Depending on your trip and itinerary, you can also pack a pair of sturdy sneakers to wear on nicer days or for indoor workouts.

Read the buyer’s guide to travel shoes for every trip , even winter trips.

Socks (Several)

To keep your feet warm, grab a few pairs of wool socks. Again, merino wool is our preferred winter sock material, because it’s warm, odor-resistant, and sweat-wicking. Plan to wear each pair two or three times before washing and hand wash them longer trips.

Read the buyer’s guide to travel socks .

Max-Sized Travel Backpack

To fit all of your winter clothes, choose a maximum-sized travel backpack like the  Tortuga 40L Travel Backpack . You’ll have plenty of space for your layers while still being carry-on-compliant.

Packing Tips for Cold Weather Travel

No matter how much you try to reduce bulk, winter clothes simply take up more room in your luggage. Here’s how to pack bulky winter clothes for travel .

Use Compression Sacks and Packing Cubes

To create space for other items, pack your winter travel clothes in  compression bags or compression packing cubes . These nifty bags will press out any excess air from bulkier items like sweaters, jackets, and ski pants.

Stuff Small Items into Your (Packed) Shoes

Pack gloves, socks, and other small items in your second pair of shoes (if you’re bringing more than one pair).

Borrow or Rent Items at Your Destination

If you’re visiting friends or family, see if you can borrow things like sweaters or coats. No matter where you’re headed, you can also rent items at your destination, especially if you’ll only need them for a day or two.

Ship Items in Advance

Ship gifts directly to your family’s house before you go home for the holidays. Or, if you’re on a trip that takes you through multiple climates and destinations, mail some of your stuff home with USPS’s flat-rate service.

Traveling with Winter Sports Gear

Packing for a ski trip is a whole different challenge. You’ll need your gear and additional clothes.

With gear, you have two options: bring it or rent it. While shipping gear may seem attractive, frequent traveler and snowboarder Angelina says, “Never ever ship your skis or snowboard. There are horror stories of people never seeing their boards or skis again. It’s not worth the risk of losing an expensive set of skis or snowboard. If you have to ship, though, insure it.”

If You’re Bringing Gear

There’s no way around it: you’ll have to check a bag. If possible, pack everything but your equipment in a carry on so you can avoid paying for two bags.

  • Keep an eye on weather patterns. Will you need your heaviest coat? Or could you go with a lighter one?
  • Buy lighter gear if you can afford it.
  • Bring only what you need and leave non-essentials at home.
  • Optimize space by puting small gear in your ski boots.
  • Share the snowboard or ski bag with friends to save money on checked luggage .
  • Pack more than just your skis/snowboard in the bag. Keep it under 50 pounds, or you’ll likely have to pay an oversized luggage charge.
  • Get a good bag.

If You’re Renting Gear

Most serious skiers and snowboarders I know say they hate this option. Renting is expensive, time consuming, and the equipment is often not good quality. Still, sometimes you’ve got to rent, especially if you’re not very serious and don’t own your own gear.

  • Bring your own ski boots. They’re the one item you can still fit in a carry on , and you’ll feel more comfortable in your own shoes.
  • When renting gear, look for packages with your lift ticket.
  • Know where to rent. Resort demo centers have better gear. Local ski shops tend to be more affordable.
  • Need more than gear? Rent jackets and other clothes at outdoors stores like REI.

Packing for Winter

If you’re traveling in the winter or to a cold weather destination, you can still pack carry on only. To pack light for a winter trip:

  • Pack lightweight, easy to layer clothes in a max-sized carry on bag .
  • Opt for a down jacket.
  • Merino wool is one of the best materials for winter travel clothes.
  • Use compression sacks or packing cubes to shrink bulkier layers.
  • Wear your bulkiest layers in transit.
  • Borrow or rent larger items and sports equipment at your destination.

Ultimate Cold Weather Travel Essentials: Packing List for Winter Travel

Last Updated on May 9, 2024

Planning for a winter trip and overwhelmed with the packing errands? I get you. I have had a love hate relationship with the idea of travelling to cold weather places in winter. The hate is mainly for the cumbersome packing concerns, but I end up doing it any ways. So here in this article I am going to help you with the list of cold weather travel essentials and a printable winter trip packing list at the end.

My travels have taken me to North Sikkim, where I experienced my first snowfall at an altitude of 15,000 feet above sea level, and more recently, with my toddler to the hill stations of Kalimpong and Darjeeling, where I've never seen the Kanchanjunga in its full glory like before. So, cold weather travel is indeed enjoyable, but it requires more packing than usual, especially if you have a child.

Based on my experience and tips I have myself received from frequent explorers I have created this winter travel packing list that's the smartest way to travel light and pack right in this season.

4 day trip packing list winter

My Packing List for Winter Vacation of 1 -Week

Here is a sample packing list for a woman for 1 week. For myself alone I consider a cabin luggage and a daypack. But now I have a toddler, so my luggage size has doubled. So here's how I pack light (and right) for winter travel.

This is my personal checklist is for winter trip where I know that the temperature throughout the day would be above freezing point but goes to sub-zero levels at night. For extreme cold conditions you will need a different list and a lot of precautions.

  • 2 sets of thermal top and bottom
  • 2 denims and 5-6 tops (mostly full-sleeves)
  • 1 long puffer zipped jacket (my favorite)
  • 1 sleeveless zipped jacket (for less colder spots)
  • 1 hooed sweatshirt
  • 1 woolen tunic
  • 2 pairs of winter trackpants
  • 4-5 pairs of socks
  • a pair of good water-resistant running shoes
  • a pair of room-slippers
  • a pair of winter gloves with touch-screen compatibility
  • Beanie hat and scarf
  • Thermal Flask
  • Sanitizer (so that you can avoid washing your hands when it's extremely cold)
  • Baby wipes (for the same reason)
  • My first aid kit with medicines for nausea, vomiting, common cold, diarhea etc.
  • My skincare kit consists of moisturizer, an all-purpose antiseptic cream and sunscreen.

How big a luggage size I need to pack all these? Why do I carry running shoes instead of winter boots? What do I prefer – coats, puffer jackets or sweaters? I have answered them all in the later sections of this post.

Additional Notes on Packing

Check with your hotel to confirm that they provide electric kettles in the room. Most hotels in India do, but if you are booking a low-budget hotel or homestay and are not sure, doubly check. You will need to carry one to the cold-weather places if they don't provide it.

If you are visiting a place in winter where the temperatures go below 0 degrees at any time of the 24-hour day, make sure they have heaters or bedwarmers in place. If not, check with them what other facilities they have to manage the cold. Book your hotels carefully accordingly.

For kids you need to be extra careful. Since my toddler is getting potty-trained I need to room for a potty seat along with diapers. But soon he will get out of both, eagerly waiting for that.

Essential Tips for Packing for Winter Trips

Before we delve deeper into the winter essentials and why you need them, I want to share a summary of all my learnings from the winter trips condensed into this 8-point list.

4 day trip packing list winter

1. Layer Up: The Art of Smart Clothing

  • Base Layer: Start with moisture-wicking thermal underwear. This layer keeps your skin dry, essential in preventing cold-related discomfort.
  • Mid Layer: Depending on the temperature and amount of sunshine you can either just wear a nice turtleneck top as the mid-layer or add a layer of fleece or wool for insulation.  For really cold winters (read overcast sky and less than sub-10 degrees) this is your main defense against the cold, trapping heat close to your body.
  • Outer Layer: Finish with a waterproof, windproof jacket. It’s not just about warmth; it's also about staying dry and protected from the wind.

2. Footwear: Tackling Cold, Snow, and Ice

  • Water-resistant Running Shoes: Choose shoes that are insulated and offer a good grip. Slipping on ice isn't just a minor mishap; it can ruin your day or more.
  • Socks: Don't skimp here. Pack several pairs of wool or thermal socks. Cold feet can make the whole body feel chilly.

3. Accessories: The Little Things Matter

  • Gloves: Go for waterproof and insulated gloves. They keep your fingers nimble for those perfect winter snapshots.
  • Beanie and Scarf: A warm head and neck are crucial. They're not just accessories; they're necessities.
  • Sunglasses: The winter sun reflecting off snow can be blinding. Protect your eyes from the glare.

4. Skincare: Battling Winter Dryness

  • Moisturizer: Winter air can be harsh on your skin. A heavy-duty moisturizer is your first line of defense against dryness.
  • Lip Balm: Chapped lips are a common winter woe. A good lip balm is a small but essential item.
  • Sunscreen: Believe it or not, sunburns can occur even in winter, especially when it's sunny in the hill stations and you want to keep enjoying the warmth of the winter sunshine.

5. Health and Comfort: Staying Healthy and Cozy

  • Thermal Flask: A hot drink can be a great morale booster on a cold day. Plus, staying hydrated is key.
  • Snacks: Energy bars or nuts are perfect for quick, on-the-go energy boosts.
  • First Aid Kit: Include cold and flu remedies, just in case.

6. Packing Smart: Organization and Space Saving

  • Compression Bags: Ideal for reducing the bulk of winter clothes.
  • Packing Cubes: They're not just for organization. They also help you find what you need without unpacking everything.

Now let's dive deeper into this list.

Winter Travel Essentials – What You Need and What Not

I don't particularly like shopping and stuffing my wardrobe. At least that's what I think although somehow my wardrobe is still full, I wonder why. I guess it's because of all the sarees I keep getting as gifts and never wear.

Anyways, it's really important to understand what you think you might need to pack for your winter trip  but actually don't. And things that you really can't go for a winter vacation to a cold place without.

Girl in denims jacket and Nike runninh shoes, trekking in Sikkim's forest in winter

1. Travel Footwear for Winter

Footwear is critical in cold climates. You'll need shoes that not only keep your feet warm but also prevent slips on icy surfaces.

1. 1 Water Resistant Running Shoes – My Top Pick

Running shoes are my all-time favorite for any kind of vacation. For winter in India I don't look for waterproof shoes as the chances of precipitation is low. However partially water-resistant shoes are helpful to walk on snow covered surfaces.

1.2 Water resistant walking shoes

I love my walking shoes because I can simply slip into them without opening and tying knots. These are ideal for exploring temples and monasteries where you need to frequently open your shoes before entering the sacred rooms or strolling through the cities in winter. Look for shoes with good insulation to keep your feet warm and dry.

On my recent trip where I travelled to Dooars, Kalimpong and Darjeeling, I knew that I wouldn't be going to any snow-covered region like in my earlier trip to Sikkim. Neither did I intend to do any treks here. So, I chose a pair of walking shoes by Sketchers and they served me amazingly well.

1.3 Boots – Do You Really Need It?

If you live in a cold place where you need to go out in the snow-covered streets during the winter, you need those winter boots. It's a good investment because not only do you need them for your winter trip but even at home.

But for someone from the tropics like me, I really have no reason to invest in a pair of boots. When you go into the snow-covered spots in winter, you can rent a boot locally at Rs. 100 – Rs. 300.

Instead invest in a few pairs of long warm socks on which you can wear those rented boots.

There can be other reasons for buying a winter boot though. If you have an atypical foot size, it may be difficult to get a matching size of shoe to rent. If you regularly visit these snowfall destinations, then too it's a good idea to buy a stylish pair for yourself.

1.4 Warm Socks

Don't underestimate the power of a good pair of socks. Warm, thick socks are crucial to keep your feet cozy and are an essential item on any winter packing list.

2. Clothes and Accessories for Winter Travel

The right clothes can make or break your winter vacation. Layering is key to maintaining warmth and adapting to changing temperatures.

2.1 Thermal Inner Wear

4 day trip packing list winter

A good base layer of thermal wear is the foundation of staying warm. These are essential for any winter trip, keeping the cold out and the warmth in.

I opt for the light-weight body hugging thermals with a deep neck which I can wear underneath with any shirt or tunic or blouse. If it isn't too cold, I can also ditch the jackets and road around in my stylish outfits as if I'm not layered up at all.

2.2  Puffer Jackets

Black mid-length puffer jacket for winter

A puffer jacket , a staple in my winter packing list, is a type of coat that's lightweight yet incredibly warm. Distinctive for its ‘puffy' sections between the stitching, these jackets are filled with down insulation or synthetic fibers. The design creates small air pockets that trap and retain heat, making them exceptionally good at keeping you warm.

If I could pick only one winter-wear for my trip, I'd simply take my long puffer jacket along. Choose the ones with zipped pockets where you can keep your wallet and mobile phone.

2.3 Long Overcoats

4 day trip packing list winter

For a more stylish option that still offers warmth, long overcoats are a great choice. They're perfect for evenings out in a winter wonderland.

I have seen the locals wear these bright-colored overcoats in the north-east India and they look gorgeous.

I prefer puffer coats as they are water-proof and low on maintenance. But I think the overcoats look more chic.

2.4 Hooded Jackets

4 day trip packing list winter

Versatile and comfortable, hooded sweatshirts are my go-to in Indian winters. They come in various materials for different levels of cold. you can wear them above heavy woolens for colder regions.

2.5 Woolen Sweaters and Cardigans

4 day trip packing list winter

These are the classical choices that most of our parents still go for. Over time I have learnt to ditch cardigans for winter travels. I wear them only for casual outings or at home.

But they are still very useful as a middle layer. Personally, I don't mind wearing my favorite long woolen Kurti .

2.6 Accessories : Gloves, Beanie and Scarf

Girl in beanie hat scarves and gloves in the mountains of eastern Himalayas

To protect your hands from the biting cold, a good pair of gloves is indispensable. Waterproof and insulated options are best.

A warm beanie hat and scarf set are more than just accessories; they're vital for keeping your head and neck protected from the cold.

2.8 Denims with Thermal Bottoms

4 day trip packing list winter

While not the warmest, denims are durable and can be paired with thermal wear for a day out in the city. I avoid denims in summer because of the humid weather in India. But they are my top choice for winter trips when combined with a layer of thermal pants.

2.9 Winter trackpants

Denims are for outdoor exploration, but when you come back to relax in your hotel, you need something more comfortable. So never forget your winter trackpants. They are useful for long-duration train journeys and flights as well.

3. Winter Skincare

Navigating the winter months means facing the harsh effects of cold weather on your skin. Thus, incorporating skincare essentials into your travel packing list is not just a luxury but a necessity.

3.1 A Good Moisturizer

The cornerstone of winter skincare is a robust moisturizer. Cold air and wind can strip moisture from your skin, leading to dryness and discomfort. A heavy-duty moisturizer combats this effectively, keeping your skin hydrated and supple throughout your winter travels.

3.2 Body Oil

Adding a layer of body oil can amplify your skin's protection against the cold. Body oils are excellent for locking in moisture and providing an extra barrier against the harsh winter elements, keeping your skin nourished and resilient.

3.3 Boroline

I normally don't mention brands, but Boroline is not a brand for Bengalis, but a part of life. That was literally the tagline for Boroline antiseptic cream back in the day and it still is for this generations.

Boroline is a multipurpose product that addresses chapped lips, dry skin patches, mosqioto bites and even minor cuts, making it a versatile and invaluable addition to your cold-weather travel essentials. Its all-in-one functionality makes it a smart packing choice.

While you could take a travel-pack of your favorite cold cream, foot cream etc., I carry this one thing.

3.4 Sunscreen Lotion

It's a common misconception that sunscreen is only for summer. In winter, the sun can be just as damaging, especially when reflected off snow.

A quality sunscreen lotion (atleast spf 50+) is essential to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, no matter how chilly it gets.

4. Packing Organizers

The way you pack can significantly impact your winter travel experience. Smart packing solutions not only save space but also keep you organized and stress-free.

4.1 Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are a traveler's best friend, especially when dealing with bulky winter clothing. They help you compartmentalize different types of clothing, making it easier to find what you need without rummaging through your entire suitcase.

4.2 Compression Bags

organising my winter jackets with a travel compression bag

For the more voluminous items like jackets and sweaters, compression bags are a godsend. They help reduce the space these bulky items take up, allowing you to pack more efficiently and keep your winter gear well-organized.

That's a wrap to the winter packing checklist for adults. For kids, I would need a whole new post. Let me know if you want that. With this you are set to explore the best winter destinations or any place that has cold weather throughout the year.

Good list for a winter vacation! I like that you also recommend taking a thermal flask. While most people think about warm clothes I feel a hot drink often helps a lot. I even take a small electric kettle in winter.

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. They usually provide electric kettles even in the budget-range hotels in India, so this thought didnt come to my mind. But it’s a great point to check, I remember being shocked to not find the electric kettles in room on our Europe trip

ULTIMATE Packing List for Winter Travel (Stay Cozy and Prepared)

If you’re someone who’s not acclimated to winter destinations, making a packing list for winter travel may seem daunting. You might be wondering what appropriate clothes and shoes you should bring to prevent your fingers from freezing off and at the same time be sufficiently warm to enjoy your trip. And let’s face it, where do you even begin to stuff all those bulky clothes into a single bag or carry-on?

Well, we’re here to help! Whether you’re embarking on a frosty city break, chasing the aurora borealis, or shredding some powder on the slopes, we’ve got the essentials that’ll have you packing like a pro. So, sit back, sip some hot cocoa, and let’s dive into the cozy realm of winter travel packing!

What to expect during winter travels

Personal items: comforts & necessities, choosing what to wear, know before you go, stay charged, safety first, embrace the après ski life, wrapping it up.

First things first, here are the things you should know when traveling during winter:

The key to traveling in winter is to layer clothes, instead of bringing warmer clothes.

If you’re unused to the cold, chances are you will struggle worse compared to those who are more cold tolerant. Hence, you might need to bring warmer clothes. But don’t worry, you’ll survive and hopefully enjoy the trip with this guide!

Your winter travel essentials will depend on where you’re going, how long for, and what activities you’re going (e.g., are you going to be outside a lot of time, are you going for adventure activities, etc.). This will help you determine what clothes and other items to bring and whether you can use a one bag or need to check-in an additional suitcase + personal item.

Packing List For Winter Travel

Winter clothes for a packing list for winter travel

Winter trips demand more than just sweaters and socks. Oh no, they ask — nay, demand — layers, warmth, and waterproof wonders that laugh in the face of Jack Frost.

So without further ado, here’s the ultimate winter travel packing list to ensure you stay toasty from takeoff to touchdown and beyond.

Basically, what you need is called warm layering . This packing list covers essential top and bottom layers that you will need on your winter trip.

For the top, you will need:

  • Base layer . Start with a snug thermal that will help you trap precious body heat. Merino wool makes for a great base layer, as well as silk or hemp. Avoid non-insulating fabrics like cotton, which won’t dry out when you sweat and will draw heat away from your body.
  • Midlayer . A fleece or wool sweater. If it’s only mildly cold, a long-sleeve shirt will do.
  • Puffy jacket . A synthetic or down jacket that’s basically a duvet with sleeves.
  • Rain shell . In case you’re going in places with pretty cold temperatures.
  • (Optional) Sweaters: Cozy and stylish? Yes, please!

And for the bottom:

  • Heat-tech leggings and pants . Layer them up or go it alone on milder days.
  • Snow pants . For those planning on making snow angels or slope-side antics.

Keeping your head, hands, and feet warm and dry makes a world of difference and helps keep body temperature. For this, you will also need the following:

  • Wool Socks. Toasty toes are happy toes. Pack plenty!
  • Waterproof boots
  • Beanie, Scarves, Gloves: The terrific trio of winter accessorizing.
  • Sunglasses: Snow glare isn’t a myth; protect those peepers.
  • Daypack: To carry your essentials while you explore.
  • Insulated water bottle: Hydration at the right temperature, all day long.
  • Travel towel: Quick-drying and space-saving for any impromptu snow-soaked events.

Additionally, consider bringing other hydrating beverages, such as herbal teas or hot cocoa, to enjoy during your trip. You can also buy Maeng Da kratom , a natural supplement known for its potential energizing effects, to help you stay refreshed during your travels.

  • Smartphone with a sturdy case: Because cold hands equal butterfingers.
  • Battery pack: Cold zaps battery life — don’t fall victim.
  • Camera: Capture the winter magic without freezing your memories.
  • Headlamp/Flashlight: With fewer daylight hours, you’ll want this.
  • Chapstick and Moisturizer: Combat the chapped and the chafed.
  • Sunscreen: Yes, even in winter.
  • Travel first-aid kit: Always a good idea, no matter the season.
  • Prescriptions and medications: Include some cold and flu remedies, just in case.
  • Copies of important documents: Keep a digital and physical copy separate from the originals.

Tips for Traveling During Winter

Traveling in winter is a magical experience laced with a bit of logistical wizardry. Here are some pro-tips to ensure your trip is nothing short of spectacular:

Winter in NYC

As mentioned previously, layering is key to winter travels. You want to be flexible so you won’t overheat inside buildings or get too cold outside.

Don’t overdress when active; instead, bring a jacket that you can easily put on or remove when you start or stop to cool off. Opt for synthetic insulation when heading to a place with a wet cold climate and down for a drier climate.

Packing is tricky when it comes to winter clothes. Many people prefer to just use one bag, in which case you will need to wear or carry the bulky items on hand at the airport and pack everything else in the bag. However, if you want to be comfortable, it might be best to opt for a carry-on luggage and a personal item (backpack).

We recommend making a detailed packing list and planning your outfits in advance to avoid bringing unnecessary items. It’s fine to rewear clothes multiple times (especially jeans and tops like sweaters), especially as the climate will prevent you from sweating too much and hence preventing body odor. Plus doing a mix-and-match is fun!

If you find missing more items, look for shops such as Uniqlo, which offer reasonably priced but good-quality winter travel essentials such as heat-tech tops and bottoms.

Do your homework on your destination’s weather, festivities, and local customs during winter. Some places embrace the chill with open arms and winter festivals (looking at you, Quebec City!).

Keep your electronics close to your body warmth when outdoors to preserve battery life. Your future Instagram postcards will thank you for their prolonged life.

Check the weather forecast regularly and always let someone know your itinerary for outdoor adventures. Mother Nature can be unpredictable, after all.

Snow in Netherlands

Even if you’re not hitting the slopes, there’s nothing like a warm fireplace and a hot drink to relax after a day in the cold.

Winter travel is an incredible adventure that leads to unique experiences and unforgettable memories. By following this trusty packing list for winter travel, you’ll ensure you’re prepared for whatever your wintry expedition throws at you.

And remember — cold is just a state of mind (but so is frostbite, so wear your gloves).

The Best Packing List for Cold Weather: How to Pack Light for Winter Travel

This page contains affiliate links. Please read our disclosure for more info.

Packing light for cold weather seems impossible to many people. While it can be trickier than for a beach holiday, there’s no reason why you can’t pack light for winter travel too.

For the last decade we’ve been travelling full-time with just carry-on luggage and have travelled to cold climates many times.

Below you’ll find our tips on how to pack light for cold weather and an example packing list for cold weather that we used for a 10-day trip to Finland.

Pack for a Week

Wear layers, take a light, packable down jacket, wear your heaviest clothes on the plane, use compression bags or packing cubes to organise your clothes, tips for multiple climate travel, our cold weather packing list , more packing for cold weather tips.

We can travel for over a decade with just carry-on luggage because we never pack more clothes than we need for a week.

Although our Finland trip was only 10 days, we packed the same as we would have for three months, so the length of your vacation doesn’t matter.

After a week, you can do laundry, either in your hotel sink, as we did in Finland (I used the hotel shampoo), find a laundrette, or stay in a rental with washing machine.

Cold weather travel is actually easier as the same clothes can be worn more often than in hot sweaty weather, so we had to do less laundry than usual.

I also highly recommend packing winter travel clothes made from merino wool, as it’s not only warm and lightweight, but also odour-resistant so you can wear it multiple times without needing to wash it.

Back to Contents

If you are wondering what to pack for cold weather, the answer is lots of layers!

By packing layers, rather than one heavy jacket, you can adapt to changing weather conditions and your luggage will be lighter.

You can also wash your base layers more often—it’s easier to wash a t-shirt than a jumper.

A good layer system is a t-shirt, a lightweight but warm long sleeved top (merino wool is ideal), a fleece, and a packable down jacket (more on those below).

If it’s very cold, a pair of thermal leggings (long johns) can be worn under your trousers and are also useful for sleeping in.

Simon didn’t bother with these, but I wore my leggings in Lapland either under my ski trousers (which I rented) or my PrAna travel trousers .

If you’ll be hiking or expect heavy rain, you might also want to take a lightweight waterproof jacket to wear over your down jacket.

We didn’t find this necessary in Finland, but it was an essential part of our Iceland packing list .

We now travel with the light Marmot PreCip Eco Jacket , which packs down into its own pocket and features pockets, a hood, and pit zips.

Make sure you pack thick socks, a woolly hat, scarf, and gloves as these don’t take up much space but make a big difference.

If you are only travelling to a cold climate, you can break the rules slightly and take a heavier jacket, as long as you can wear it on travel days.

My knee length wool coat was my luxury item on this trip—it’s not at all packable, but as I wore it on travel days it didn’t matter, and I liked having something smarter for Helsinki.

If I’d been travelling to multiple climates, I would have left it behind.

The secret to packing light for cold weather is a puffy insulated jacket which is warm, ultra lightweight, and highly compressible so it’s easy to pack.

They usually have a nylon outer shell which is windproof and water resistant.

Goose down has the highest warmth to weight ratio—it keeps you toasty in a tiny package. The downsides are that it stops being warm when wet and takes ages to dry, so you’ll need to wear a rain jacket over it in very wet conditions.

There are also ethical considerations as sometimes the feathers are plucked from live birds. Patagonia and Mountain Hardwear use ethically sourced feathers or you could choose a synthetic down jacket instead.

Synthetic jackets aren’t quite as warm or compressible, but they work better in wet weather.

Simon travelled to Finland with the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer down jacket which is the world’s lightest full-featured down jacket with 800 fill power which is about the best you can get.

It really is insanely light (only 219 g / 7.7 oz) but kept Simon remarkably warm. If space and weight are limited this is an excellent option.

I went with the Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody which is made from synthetic down so it isn’t quite as compressible or light as a down jacket (it’s 292 g / 10.3 oz), but it isn’t a huge difference.

Synthetic down is also cheaper and I didn’t have to worry about the ethical issues of goose down.

Both were fantastic jackets that kept us surprisingly warm in such a light package.

They have similar features—two external zipped pockets (My Patagonia also has an internal zipped pocket), hoods, and they stuff into one of their pockets, creating a small package that is easy to pack.

Down jackets aren’t typically good in the rain, and many people wear a shell or waterproof jacket over the top. Both our jackets have a water repellant shell and they were fine in light rain—and it rained quite a lot in Finland.

They kept the wind out too. They were ideal for active pursuits like the snowboarding , hiking, and horse riding we did in Ruka.

We chose the hooded versions of our jackets but didn’t end up using the hoods very often in Finland as we had hats, so you could save a little space by choosing the versions without.

On a later trip to Iceland, the hoods came in handy to keep the powerful wind out, though.

I think black would have been a better colour choice as they would have looked a bit smarter for more dressy occasions.

Down jackets are expensive but they are worth it if you are travelling in the winter as they are so warm and packable. We’ve now had our jackets for seven years so they are good value in the long term.

Combined with other layers, a down jacket enables you to stay warm in very cold temperatures and is one of the best things to pack for cold weather.

They are perfect if you are travelling to multiple climates as you can easily store them in your luggage when you’re not wearing them.

This has been very useful for us in the last few years as we’ve travelled to a mix of cold and warm destinations including Hawaii, Japan in winter, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand (in all seasons).

Wear your heaviest and bulkiest clothes and shoes on the plane to save space and weight in your luggage. I always wore my jeans, boots, fleece and wool jacket on travel days.

You can also save space by stuffing your gloves and hat in your jacket pockets.

How you pack is just as important as what you pack. Using packing cubes makes packing winter clothes in a carry on easy.

By packing your clothes in compression bags or packing cubes you’ll keep things organised and save space.

For five years we travelled with compression bags —the kind you roll to suck out excess air. These work especially well for bulky items so are great for packing winter clothes.

The downside of compression bags is that you have to roll them up, which can be a bit of a pain, and your clothes aren’t accessible without releasing the air.

For our Finland trip we used Eagle Creek’s compression packing cubes instead and having been travelling with them ever since.

While these don’t suck air out like compression bags, they do squeeze packing cubes down into a smaller package with a zip around the side.

Eagle Creek compression packing cube review

We could easily fit everything into the cubes and had plenty of space in our backpacks. Compared to the compression bags, the packing cubes are less hassle to pack, we can easily access our clothes, and they cause fewer wrinkles.

I went with the Specter compression cubes as they are ultra lightweight—I use a full cube for my main clothes, a half cube for my running clothes, and a half cube for underwear.

Simon now travels with Peak Design packing cubes —he uses a medium cube for his clothes and a small one for underwear. They are a bit heavier than the Eagle Creek cubes, but he likes the stylish design and separate compartment for dirty laundry.

Peak Design Packing Cubes review

I think everyone should consider using compression packing cubes for packing winter clothes in a carry on. If you are really struggling with space, compression bags will save you even more space.

While packing for cold weather is easier if you’ll only be visiting wintery destinations (like on our Finland trip), it is possible to travel carry-on only to multiple climates.

For the last few years we’ve continued to pack light despite visiting a mix of cold and hot destinations.

For multiple climate travel, I give up the bulky luxury items I had in Finland—my boots and wool jacket—but manage just fine without them.

For mixed climates, pack compact clothes like down jackets and merino wool tops that have a high warmth to weight ratio, and multi-purpose items like a dress you can wear on its own in hot weather or pair with leggings and a cardigan when it gets cooler.

If you’ll be travelling for long periods of time in hot weather, don’t pack your winter gear— buy it when you get there . If the first three months of your trip are in Southeast Asia, there’s no point carrying around sweaters for when you get to New Zealand in the winter.

We always travel with a few items (jeans, cardigan, fleece) and anything else we need we’ll buy when we hit cold weather.

When we spent the winter in Melbourne, Australia, I needed warmer shoes so bought a pair of Allbirds Wool Runners , and have been travelling with them ever since (they’ve been ideal in New Zealand too).

I love how warm and cosy they are. They are so comfortable they feel like slippers and I can even wear them without socks. See my Allbirds review for more details.

I have since picked up a pair of Allbirds Mizzles , which are even better for a winter packing list as they are water resistant and have more traction for slippery surfaces. I’ve even worn them on hikes.

Allbirds review - Allbirds wool runners in natural grey

In northern Argentina when the weather turned snowy, we picked up thick socks, hats, gloves, and an extra thick fleece inexpensively at a local market.

You can find cheap winter clothes in second-hand shops, markets, and discount clothing shops like Primark in the UK and Target in the US—ask locals where to shop.

We borrowed and bought extra gear for our Finland trip in the UK. This doesn’t have to be expensive—a hat and gloves in the market cost £5 and my warm winter boots were £17.50 online at Zalando.

You can also rent clothes at your destination. We’ve rented snowboarding clothes in Finland, New Zealand and France and jackets for a trek in Nepal.

You can see our multi-climate Europe packing list for a trip from August to December.

This was our cold weather packing list for our Finland trip in early May. We packed for both active outdoorsy stuff (snowboarding, hiking, horse riding) in Ruka and city life in stylish Helsinki.

Both of our carry on backpacks weighed 8.6 kg (19 lbs). This was slightly over the 8 kg carry-on limit of Finnair but as usual they didn’t weigh our bags .

Finnair only allows one carry-on bag without an extra personal item, so Simon packed a cotton shoulder bag to use as a day bag in his backpack (we have since upgraded to a packable daypack ).

On the trip we had temperatures ranging from 2-12ºC (35-53ºF) although the wind chill factor often made it feel colder, and it rained about half the time.

Our layers and down jackets kept us warm and we never felt like we had a lack of clothes. We definitely could have managed even colder temperatures as we didn’t wear all our layers.

This winter carry on packing list includes everything that we wore on the plane so we didn’t actually pack all of this.

You can use this packing list for cold weather for any winter travel.

For Finland we travelled with carry-on backpacks. We have since switched to Away carry on suitcases —see our carry on packing list for why we changed.

  • Tortuga Outbreaker backpack (Simon) – Lots of space and a good hip belt to take the weight off the shoulders.
  • Osprey Farpoint 40 backpack (Erin) – The perfect size for me with good support and plenty of space.
  • Combination locks – To lock the zips of our backpacks.
  • Cotton shoulder bag – We used this as a day bag. Simon packed it in his backpack on travel days. I now recommend a packable daypack instead—we currently use the Matador Freefly16 daypack.

Erin’s Clothes

A winter packing list carry-on only - Erin's stuff

  • Eagle Creek Specter compression cube set – For clothes.
  • Eagle Creek half packing cube – For my underwear and other bits like Simon’s hard drive.
  • 1  Acai Skinny Outdoor Jeans   – My new favourite travel-friendly jeans are super comfy, have huge pockets, and are shower-resistant. They are UK based but ship internationally. See also my review of the  best travel pants for women .
  • 1 PrAna Halle trousers – Practical but decent looking travel trousers.
  • 1 Thermal leggings – To wear under my trousers.
  • 2 Tank tops – To layer under my other tops. I didn’t end up wearing one of them.
  • 3 Short sleeve tops – These could be replaced with extra long sleeve tops.
  • 1 Icebreaker long sleeve merino wool top – This is fantastic as it keeps me warm without taking up much space. Merino wool is not at all itchy and it never smells!
  • 1 Sweater – I like merino wool or cashmere sweaters as they are warm, light and dry more quickly than cotton.
  • 1 North Face lightweight hooded fleece – This comes with me everywhere as it’s warm and light.
  • 1 Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody Jacket   – Warm but amazingly light and packable. See my review above.
  • 1 Wool jacket – My knee length jacket is heavy and impractical for long term travel, but for this short trip I wore it on travel days so it didn’t matter. It was nice to have something smarter in Helsinki.
  • Running outfit: Capri leggings, t-shirt, long sleeve top, sports bra, running socks, fleece headband – If you don’t run/workout you obviously won’t need to pack these.
  • 7 Underwear – My favourites are the lightweight, quick-drying ExOfficio underwear .
  • 7 Socks (3 thick, 4 thin) – One pair were the ultra warm Smartwool Classic Hike Full Cushion Crew socks which I adore in cold weather.
  • Woolly hat – I love my Allbirds Pom Beanie made from merino wool as it’s cute, non-itchy, and super warm. They only sell it in the winter months.
  • Sunglasses and travel case
  • Winter Boots – I bought some cheap but warm boots (not these exact ones but similar—basically fake Uggs) which I wore every day. They weren’t waterproof so I would have bought better ones for a longer trip.
  • Running shoes – I currently travel with the Allbirds Tree Dashers . If you don’t need shoes for running but would like a pair of cosy warm sneakers, see my Allbirds wool runners review . An alternative second pair of shoes, if it’s not too cold, could be a pair of comfortable, lightweight ballet flats like my beloved Allbirds Tree Breezers .

Simon’s Clothes

A cold weather packing list in a carry-on - Simon's clothes

  • Peak Design Packing Cubes – Medium for clothes and small for underwear.
  • 1 Aviator Jeans – These are super comfortable, feature hidden zipped pockets, and the dark indigo colour looks great.
  • 1 Bluffworks pants – The most functional and stylish travel trousers Simon has found. They are lightweight, wrinkle-free, quick-drying, and have hidden zipped pockets, but still look good. He has worn them hiking, horse riding and to weddings.
  • 3 T-shirts – His favourite is the Bluffworks Threshold T-Shirt  (yes, most of his clothes are made by Bluffworks!).
  • 1 Long sleeve shirt – His Bluffworks shirt is wrinkle-free and quick drying.
  • 1 Icebreaker long sleeve merino wool top  – Warm, lightweight, and odour-resistant.
  • 1 Lightweight fleece
  • 1 Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Hooded Down Jacket   – Incredibly light and warm. See the review above.
  • 7 Underwear – A mix of Uniqlo AIRism and ExOfficio travel underwear .
  • 5 Socks (2 thick, 3 thin) – One pair were the cosy Smartwool Classic Hike Full Cushion Crew socks .
  • Scarf – He never wore it.
  • Waterproof hiking shoes – Simon had the Scarpa Margarita GTX shoes in Finland but now travels with the Keen Targhee III waterproof hiking shoes . They are rugged enough for hikes but neutral enough for city travel.

From now on, I will pack like your style. Very helpful, thanks. Few pairs of thermal socks are really helpful for me. Also maybe a tiny hot water gel pack instead of hot water bags. Gel packs are better for hand-luggages.

What a great post…thank you. I also have the Osprey Farpoint 40 and love it although at 38 liters I could use just a tiny bit more room. I think inspired by you I will pack less! What do you recommend for shoes for a multi climate trip that will include light hiking and a ton of city walking? Thank you!

I’m glad you like the Osprey too Lisa! Have you tried packing cubes or compression bags? We find that they make all the difference and allow us to fit extra items in. I wrote about them here: https://www.neverendingvoyage.com/how-to-use-packing-cubes-carry-on-travel/

Shoes are tough! Finding one pair of shoes that does everything is hard but maybe some lightweight sneakers/trainers in a neutral design so they don’t stand out so much. In cities I tend to wear my Tieks most of the time, although they are not ideal if the weather is rainy (then I have to wear my running shoes). Good luck in finding something!

Southern India – 10 pound backpack for 10 weeks. I wore nylon clothes, carried camcorder equipment and I also had paperwork, money and documents. The key was the nylon, which dried quickly, especially since it was Spring.

* not the zippered one, let’s say the small compartment!

Hello! Quick question. Does the eagle creek pro organizer fit in horizontal position in the Osprey’s smaller pocket (in front of the laptop sleeve)?

Yes it would. Although I tend not to put much in that compartment as it makes the bag look too bulky (and I try to make my bag look small so that airlines don’t weigh it!).

I also want to thank you for the inspiration. I am a frequent business traveler, my usual bags being a US-sized carry-on and a backpack. Even with all of the electronics I need for work, I wash laundry in the sink and I can extend a week’s worth of laundry to a month. Or several months. Though I will say that I become really really tired of wearing the same clothes over and over again. “Tuesday. Orange shirt, black pants, tan jacket. Again.”

Right now I have been reading your site for inspiration on a vacation trip to Norway with only a backpack. Even without the business computer and cables, packing layers in a single backpack is a challenge. And unlike you, the plan seems to be that we change hotels or fly somewhere every single day (not my choice!). I am concerned that doing my usual laundry in a sink will be a serious challenge. That said, your ideas on the compression sacks are very interesting. I’m trying them out for the first time and this may well change the way I pack going forward.

But I had some thoughts for you.

I always pack a laundry cord and a sink stopper (round plastic disk) to do frequent laundry. Too many times I find that hotel sinks and tubs do not have stoppers that work.Mine works in many places. And even in hotels with a built-in laundry line, I appreciate having two. But many places in Europe and Asia have nowhere to hang drying laundry.

As a female traveler, I have some clothing challenges. Quick-dry business wear! And pockets. So far, my working approaches include:

* Nike women’s golf pants. I know it sounds crazy, but they look surprisingly good and are completely quick dry. I’d be hesitant to ride horses or do other wearing activities in them, but for business wear they are great.

* Duluth Trading Company’s women’s line. Pockets! For hardcore activities that lead to wear and tear on my pants, I favor several of their cargo pants. I have an embarrassing number of pairs, which I use for everything from lawn care when I am at home (quick dry with pockets!) to family travel that tends toward hardcore house cleaning (DIRT! Lots of kneeling. Pockets to hold tools and work gloves!). They have everything from quick dry through winter pairs with flannel lining (currently packed for Norway!).

Thanks for the tips Di! You might want to look at Anatomie’s clothes. They are expensive but many travellers love them- they are travel-friendly but smart. Good luck on your Norway trip!

Wow, thank you for the thorough blog post! My husband and I just booked flights to Norway today (from USA) to visit my parents, but we could only afford to check one bag. I was worried about how we’d make it work, but after reading your highly informative and super empowering post, I’m excited for our new challenge coming up! Thank you so much! Great work!

Good luck Lindsay and let me know how you get on! Enjoy Norway!

This is fantastic. I love the content, organization, and photos. You are well-prepared but not overloaded with stuff.

Thanks for the packing tips! I found it much more difficult to decide what to pack for a cold than for a hot weather. You did a great packing! Extremely interesting post, which gives me a lot of useful ideas! Greetings

Glad you found it useful Bonnie!

I’m curious how you go about choosing new items you add to your luggage (such as the insulating jackets) when you are on the road. Do you buy online based on reviews or wait until you’re at a location with a good selection in the shop(s) to check the fit and features? (Or some combination of the two?)

Cheers, Liam

We usually buy new gear when we’re in the UK and the US. Most of the time we read reviews and buy online as it’s easier (and often cheaper) but sometimes we visit outdoor stores so we can try things on.

Thank you for giving the tips, I have never been into winter season, It’s such a big help and tip for me for future reference!

I’m about to head into the heart of a Southern winter here in Latin America, so this post is timely … thanks!

First off, I didn’t say this the first time I posted on your site in response to one of many great articles here, but the site is absolutely lovely. Second, I can’t even tell you how much help this is going to be for my family as we make our way to New Zealand which contrary to what many think, isn’t “always” hot. The organization factor really resonates with me, we always end up carrying far too much in our luggage and half your tips we hadn’t even thought about. You’ve made our upcoming trip a lot smoother, thank you so much.

Thanks Kyle and I’m so glad the article helped. We’ve been to New Zealand in winter so definitely know how cold it can get! Good luck!

Hi. I am a big fan of traveling with just a carry on. A few years back I purchased 4 big 24″ JanSport backpacks. Our family of four took a 2-week European summer vacation. Each one of us took their own toiletries. We also wear the heaviest clothes and shoes. Years later we took a winter skiing trip and again with the same bags. Everything fit! Skiing pants, sweaters, all layers, everything! The key is not to take your whole closet. Pack, as you say, for 5 days, and wash clothes along the way. We don’t use packing cubes, instead, we roll each piece of clothing real well and stuff the bag

That’s great to hear it’s possible with families and on a ski trip too!

Winter Packing List For A Four Day Trip: All You Need!

BannerImg

A winter packing list can be huge work if not planned. Winter clothes are heavy and bulky. They can take a lot of space and leave very little space for the essentials. Especially for a short trip, it is very important to make your winter packing list as crisp as possible. But crisp doesn’t mean miss your winter packing essentials at home and take along baby diapers knowing that you don’t have a baby! Here, I am going to tell you what to take for a four-day winter trip.

Winter packing list should have a pattern. Let me start stepwise.

Wherever you are heading, the first thing that you need to decide is the luggage. You obviously do not want to carry a huge suitcase for a day’s trip and you also don’t want to carry a medium sized luggage for a month’s trip. Choose your luggage wisely . Your clothes are supposed to be packed, not dumped!

Organisation

See, I am not telling you to have OCD. I am telling you to be organised for your own convenience. Packing cube , compression bags and packing folders are for your organised packing. You can either take all of them along and help yourself or else depending upon what you are taking, pick either of them.

List of what to take along

Your winter packing list for a four-day trip needs to be minimal. It is not important to take your entire wardrobe with you. You can do without most of your stuff… Think before putting anything extra in the bags because …

You will have to carry it, yourself!

So here is the winter packing list for a four day-trip for you.

I am not suggesting you take everything that is in the list below. Pick what is important for your trip and pack accordingly.

The basic requirements:

Business trip:.

  • Shirts (Maximum 2) for a business trip
  • Formal trousers (one dark coloured) that can go with anything.
  • One suit/ or a formal cardigan/ one long coat
  • Formal shoes
  • 2 pairs of socks and a necktie
  • Handkerchief
  • Undergarments

Casual trip:

  • T-shirts and tops ( 2 each)
  • Lightweight clothes (layering is the key)
  • Trousers/Jeans/Shorts (Dark colour is a magic colour that can be matched with any top)
  • 2 pairs of socks (Compression socks if you are planning hiking)
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Windcheater or a raincoat
  • Pyjamas/sleepwear
  • Accessories (not compulsory) – These can be packed in mini cubes

Toiletries:

Toiletry as well as skin care products during winters are important. Winters can be really harsh to your skin.

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste (Mouthwash and floss depends on how much cleaner you want your teeth)
  • Shampoo and conditioner (You might get these in hotels, but it is better to carry your own with you. Carry them in small bottles)
  • Makeup and makeup remover (for women, I don’t think men carry lipsticks very well)
  • Sunscreen with SPF more than 50
  • Moisturizer
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Glasses / Prescription sunglasses

Gadgets you probably won’t forget but you might forget their chargers. Don’t do that. Check the list here:

  • Camera and charger
  • Cell phone and charger
  • Laptop and charger
  • Travel speakers/earphones
  • Travel pillow
  • Eye mask and ear plugs
  • Electric converters
  • Travel apps (For language, directions and money conversions)

Health care:

Health care is important. Don’t forget yourself while travelling. Carry all important medicines or prescriptions with you.

  • First aid kit (bandages, gauze, adhesives, thermometer, painkillers, allergy medicines, diarrhoea medicines, sunburn medication, motion sickness, mosquito repellant, Cold medicines)
  • Personal prescriptions
  • Antibacterial ointment
  • Altitude sickness pills (if you are planning to hike)
  • Hand sanitizers

Travel documents:

  • Passport/ Visa
  • Identity proof
  • Cash and credit card(s)
  • Health insurance cards
  • Travel insurance information
  • Reservations and itineraries (hard and soft copies)
  • Hotel contact information
  • Travel tickets (hard and soft copies)
  • Emergency contacts and important addresses
  • Take a copy of each item mentioned above just in case you misplace your wallet
  • Guidebooks and maps
Quick tip: Remember that minimal packing is the key. The less you pack, the more effective is your packing.

Make sure you have checked everything at home before leaving!

So this was your winter packing list for a four-day trip. Make sure you take everything along with you and have a safe and comfortable trip.

Let us know in the comments section below if the list was helpful. Wishing you a very memorable journey and an amazing New year!

Happy voyage!

4 day trip packing list winter

Are you planning a winter getaway? Although it’s definitely not everybody’s cup of tea, winter can be a wonderful time to travel. Snowfall and sleigh rides and reindeer (and Santa, obviously!), it’s a peaceful and beautiful time of year. But it’s also bloody cold! So you’re going to need the perfect winter packing list to make sure you stay toasty warm.

What to wear in winter - My coat and scarf that I wore in Iceland in December

Packing for winter is considerably harder than packing for summer. Not only have you got to think about tops and trousers, but you’ll need but also consider layers, extras like a scarf and gloves, whether you need specialist snowshoes, how to prepare for the possibility of rain, (especially if you’re visiting Europe in winter) and how to fit all of this into your suitcase!

Where you’re travelling will certainly determine your winter packing list to some extent. For example, Budapest won’t be as cold as Iceland or Norway . But there are a few things that are wise to take with you wherever you plan on travelling.

✅ Don’t have time to read the whole article? Here’s my favourite winter coat , my favourite winter boots , and the outdoor trousers that I take everywhere with me.

How to Pack Light for a Winter Vacation

The secret to packing light for a winter vacation is all about layers and neutral colours. Bringing hundreds of thick jumpers is quickly going to take up your luggage space, especially if you’re travelling with carry-on luggage only . However, if you can only bring a couple of jumpers and pair them up with multiple different layers, you’ll save space and stay warm!

Winter in Germany

Also, don’t underestimate the power of good-quality thermals. Good brands like Icebreaker and Smartwool Merino will keep you a lot warmer than cheaper brands and will be much more effective at shortening your winter packing list.

the essential Winter Packing list

Winter is a wonderful time to travel. Full of twinkly lights, hot chocolate, sleigh rides , and snow, a winter getaway will charm you. Perhaps even more than a beach break!

Packing light & well for winter is considerably harder than packing for summer . So here’s the ultimate winter packing list to keep you cosy and dry.

1. Thick Coat

One of the basic essentials of your winter packing list, a thick coat is necessary for keeping warm. You’ll need something that will keep you toasty and dry, even after making snow angels or trudging through the winter streets.

Me in my Superdry Everest bomber jacket at Aber Falls - add this to your winter packing list

Getting something waterproof is a very good idea as winter weather usually brings snow and rain. My personal favourite winter coat is Superdry Everest . They have a whole range of options in their range from shorter bomber jackets to long, padded coats.

2. Padded Jacket

These are an absolute lifesaver, especially in the icier climates. They can also be great for travel because quite often, you can squish them down and make the suitcase worthy.

I recommend getting one with a hood, especially if you’re travelling somewhere (hello, England ) that is known for very unpredictable rain! I (once again) love my padded Superdry jacket and it definitely keeps me toasty and warm!

I’m a huge fan of oversized jumpers, cable knits or a turtle neck for even more warmth. Bring a couple of jumpers and go for neutral colours again or black, which goes with everything.

4. Thermal Base Layer

I know it can be tempting to pack a whole lot of thick clothing for winter but trust me – resist the urge! These can take up loads of unnecessary space in your luggage, especially if you’re just travelling with a carry-on in winter (which is what I usually do).

The winter gear that I wore in Stockholm, Sweden

Instead, prioritise layering and bring a few thermal base layers to go underneath. These can be lifesavers for travelling in places like Canada or Iceland in winter . Something like this is perfect for travel – it’s breathable yet warm, and perfect for wearing under a jumper. Plus, it’s made from merino wool , a perfect fabric for winter travel.

5. Thermal leggings

Wanna know the secret to wearing trousers in winter without freezing? Hidden thermals!

As well as a thermal base layer on top, I also like to wear thermal leggings underneath my outdoor trousers. This applies to both women and men!

Super comfortable and fleece-lined, ACAI Outdoorwear and Patagonia are my favourites, but try Under Armour too, as they also do great ones.

6. Trousers

A good pair of jeans usually comes with me anywhere, but they’re not ideal for winter travel. As such, I tend to wear either fleece-lined leggings or my favourite pair of water-resistant outdoor trousers from ACAI Outdoorwear. I typically go for black in the winter because it goes with more colours and is essential for your Europe winter packing list.

My water-resistant ACAI Outdoor wear trousers in Norway

I will occasionally bring a pair of jeans with me too, but only if they’re flexible enough to wear thermals underneath. And only if I’m going on a winter city break and not somewhere more remote.

7. Winter Boots

In winter, always go for boots, not shoes. Preferably ones that are easy to get on and off too as they’ll save you loads of trouble at the airport.

There are loads of different styles to choose from but make sure you get a waterproof pair to protect your feet from the snow. Also, ensure the pair you choose will be comfortable if you plan on walking in them for hours.

Me in my SOREL snow boots in Iceland - add these to your winter packing list

I’m personally a sucker for SOREL boots and love their snow boots and casual winter boots. They’re super comfortable and keep my feet dry, even in heavy rain. And these are perfect for men – durable, waterproof and slip-proof so great for the winter.

8. Merino Wool Walking Socks

Boots on their own won’t do much for keeping your feet warm so winter socks are a must for travelling. You can get simple thermal ones that go under your boots and keep your feet nice and warm.  Merino wool is once again your best friend – it’s breathable so keeps you nice and warm but doesn’t let your feet get too hot if you suddenly go inside.

9. Hand and Foot Warmers

For those especially cold days, these are a lifesaver. Simply slip them in your shoes and you won’t have to worry about the cold seeping through your socks and boots.

Winter in Germany

10. Travel Umbrella

As I’ve mentioned, winter can be rainy! This travel umbrella is super small and easy to fit into a day bag but will keep you dry if the heavens decide to open.

11. Insulated Travel Flask

Sometimes, a nice hot drink is just what you need! Especially when you’re out and about on a chilly day. This insulated flask is perfect for travel lovers and would make the perfect travel gift too .

Portable, triple insulated and completely leak-free, it will keep your drinks hot for up to 12 hours. It will also keep them cold for up to 24, making it super versatile for travelling.

12. Winter Accessories

Scarves, hats, and gloves are all winter travel necessities. Beanies add a touch of style to any outfit and are great for keeping your ears warm. There is nothing worse than cold hands so a good pair is gloves is so important. I also love a big fluffy scarf for extra warmth.

Glacier hiking in Iceland - an example of some of the clothing you should add to your winter packing list

13. A good Moisturiser and lip balm

I often forget how dry the cold makes you and if you’re out in it all day, it will literally lead to chapped everything. I am NOT kidding!

So be sure to bring a good moisturiser and keep a lip balm in your day bag to prevent your lips from getting cracked and sore.  I always use Burt’s Bees Lipbalms that you can just slip into your day bag.

Final Thoughts on Packing for Winter Travel

Winter packing can definitely seem more difficult than packing for the warmer months. Clothing is bulkier, it’s harder to fit everything in your suitcase, and you need to shell out on slightly more expensive gear to stay properly warm.

But, with a few tricks, you can both pack light and stay warm over the winter months. I hope this winter packing list has given you everything you need to pack like an expert this winter!

17 Essentials for Your Winter Holiday Packing List + Top Tips You NEED!

Packing for cold weather when you’re travelling is a whole skill in itself. This post isn’t about packing for the extreme cold, like, when you go skiing, but if you’ve got a wintry weekend break or week planned, and you don’t want to freeze , here’s my advice for your  winter holiday packing list.

Central Park cold

I’m writing this post because I went to Chicago in winter recently , and to The Hague, in November , and if I hadn’t have been warm enough, the trip could’ve been ruined (like, that time I went to New York in December ).

Genuinely, packing is preparation, and preparation is happiness when it comes to your winter travel packing list.

Winter holiday packing list

Here’s a list of what you should pack for your winter holiday, so you don’t end up wasting your money on stuff you don’t need while you’re out there. Bookmark this winter clothing list now!

1. Winter coat

Obviously , a thick, hooded coat is essential for any winter packing list . Try and get a long one to keep your bum warm too.

Me in my Didriksons coat

My favourite coat I think I’ve ever bought is this red puffa French Connection one from TKMaxx. It’s lightweight yet so warm. I’d totally recommend you have a look for something similar on SimplyHike – check out their down jackets for example.

Summer in Canada

I’d recommend you take both if you’re away for the week. It’s nice to have the variety when you need to wear a coat every day.

2. Wear layers

A winter packing list is all about the layers. Let’s look at some of the best and warmest clothes I own. This sports top, also from TKMaxx kept me from freezing to death in the middle of the night in Canada . It’s got a hood and is made from breathable material. It’s meant to keep you cool in summer, and warm in winter.

Very useful.

Trek America Mountie

I’d strongly advise you to go for sports clothes when you’re travelling to a cold destination, rather than high street favourites. They’re made better and designed to last a while, rather than just a few weeks.

Merino wool is a great material for a top that will keep you warm, preferably with a tshirt underneath and a thermal under that if you need. Wear a fleece on top and then a jacket over the top of that. If it’s going to rain you’ll also want some sort of rain jacket over the top of that too.

Take strappy tops but don’t put them under your thermals, the way thermals work is to work with your skin to help the air circulate. Wear over the top for an extra layer on your body, and to keep your thermals closer to your body too.

Few things to think about for your cold weather packing list there!

3. Take a hat

Staying warm when you travel

A hat is the easiest, cheapest and most portable way to keep warm when you’re travelling. You can pick up thick and decent ones from Primark. I loved this yellow one keeping me toasty in April Lapland, until I left it at the Elves Hideaway.

Hats are a great call for those January festivals – stay warm and cool. Hats are an absolute must for your winter vacation packing list.

4. Bring some scarves

Winter weather packing list

A cold neck equals a cold body. Pack a few scarves in your winter suitcase, of differing thicknesses, and you can change up any outfit. Same coat, same trousers, but different scarf = new outfit. Easy.

Also can be used as shawls on the flight over, so make sure not to pack them all in your cabin luggage. A scarf can be a lifesaver on a winter packing list!

5. Take tights

Along with a hat, tights are a great portable and cheap way to stay warm when travelling to cold places. Keep a pair in your bag for emergencies. Check the denier, and bring a range along so you can adapt to the weather around you in your packing list for winter.

6. Thermals

What to pack for a winter trip

When I agreed to stand on the top of a bus on the open air for three hours in Chicago’s late November , in the annual Magnificent Mile parade, I knew it was going to be COLD.

And so, I took my ski thermals along.

A long sleeve top, and some trousers to keep me warm in the freezing temperatures. Thermals are specially designed to allow the heat to circulate in the best possible way to keep you toasty, and keep the body heat in. I strongly recommend you get a set of these for your winter packing list.

7. Winter trousers

Your winter travel outfits really wouldn’t be complete without trousers, obviously. On my recent cold weather trips I’ve actually just taken my usual black jeans. I’ve layered them over thermals, or tights, sometimes both.

You can get special all-weather trousers, but it’s up to you if you want to justify the expense (and sacrifice style) for your packing list for winter.

8. Boots for winter travel

Footwear is THE most important thing when you’re packing for the cold. I got these beasts from Sorell and they’re all toasty with lambswool inside. Love the pink laces – love I can change the look using other laces too.

Winter holiday boots

Hiking boots are cool too but I’m guessing if you’re going on some sort of wintry city break, you’ll want something with a bit of style. There are actually lots of lined footwear options around on the high street, but it’s up to you whether you want to splash on something that will last forever, or just the next few weeks.

Do a test run of your shoes before you go away.

I found my Guess knee high boots the other day and thought, ‘why do I not ever wear these?’ I put them on and went out for the day and by the end of a day at a rainy Christmas market , I remembered. My feet were wet and freezing cold.

Also, buy your boots a little bigger so you can wear good socks.

9. Winter socks

Buy thermal socks for your winter packing list for the best results, and invest a bit of cash. I love Darn Tough socks – they’re the best for keeping your feet nice and toasty warm with their merino wool.

4 day trip packing list winter

Even in day to day life I think socks are something that are totally worth investing in. Sure, I have a few cheapo pairs, but do I get the same level of joy sliding my feet into them every day? No.

Get yourself a few good pairs of socks to keep you all the warmer in your winter holiday packing list.

9. Winter gloves

Like socks, I believe that investing in good gloves is important.

Protect your extremities.

10. Ear muffs

Maybe you want some ear muffs to keep you warm on holiday on your cold weather packing list?

Ear muffs aren’t for me. I feel too restricted and like my most important sense is being shut off, but something for you to think about.

11. Swimwear

Yllas Lapland

One of the nicest things about being cold, is heating up again. A lot of the cold countries I’ve visited: Japan, Finland, Germany and Canada for example, all have excellent spa facilities.

Make sure you’re ready for any opportunity for a spa and pack your swim stuff in too.

5 tips for your winter holiday packing list

1. Think about bringing some heat pads that you warm up in the microwave in your packing list for winter. You can insert them in your boots and gloves easily to keep you toasty.

2. Even if it’s warm keep hats, gloves and tights in your day bag just in case. If you’re out and about and freezing your ass off these are the items to buy to keep you warm and having fun.

albert road in southsea

3. When you’re in a cold country they usually crank the heating up in the hotels, luring you into a false sense of security. Don’t believe the heat when you get ready for the morning and if you can’t stick your head out the window to test, make sure to check the weather apps for a real reflection.

4. Eat wisely. Think about what makes you hot at home. For me, porridge and soup. You’ll burn more calories being cold and eating well will help you to stay warm. Not that I’m suggesting you travel to a new country and then just stick with porridge and soup – but something to think about when you’re reading the menu, right? #nosalads

5. Wear your heaviest winter travel clothes on the plane , that way you can get away with the baggage fees if you’re not going for too long. They’re not going to charge you for a coat!

17. Use packing cubes to compress and organise

When you’ve got this much bulky stuff, how you pack is just as important as what you pack. Use packing cubes to organise and compress your stuff, so you can fit it all in as easily as possible.

These packing cubes are great because you can actually see what’s in each one when you’re packed. This is a great packing hack if you want to save space.

winter packing list

Packing cubes are also great for organising your smaller items too, like your underwear, jewellery and socks.

I do use packing cubes, but not as in such a formulaic way. I basically have loads of smaller bags that I’ve picked up around the world and pack them together instead. If I was just starting out though, I’d totally order some packing cubes online .

Your winter packing list

Being cold on a trip can ruin it. I don’t want you to look back on a trip and just remember how cold you were rather than the amazing times you had. Often, when we can’t remember what exactly we did, we can still remember how the place made us feel.

New York is kinda tainted for me thanks to me going after a Caribbean cruise and being totally under prepared for the baltic temperatures. My winter packing list definitely needed work on that trip.

I was FREEZING.

My dream to visit New York in December , froze with the weather and not wanting to buy a whole new wardrobe for my four days. Don’t be like me. Get your winter holiday packing list sorted , so you can just enjoy the trip!

When planning a winter trip, it's important to pack the right clothing items to ensure you stay warm and comfortable throughout your journey. Whether you're going skiing, snowboarding, or simply exploring a winter wonderland, here are some essential clothing items you should pack for a 4-day winter trip.

  • Base Layers: Start with a good set of base layers, including long-sleeve thermal tops and bottoms. These will help regulate your body temperature and wick away moisture to keep you dry and warm.
  • Mid-Layers: Layering is key in winter, so pack a few mid-layer options such as fleece jackets or sweaters. These will provide extra insulation and can easily be added or removed as needed.
  • Winter Coat or Jacket: A warm and waterproof winter coat or jacket is essential for protection against wind, snow, and rain. Look for one with insulation such as down or synthetic fill for maximum warmth.
  • Waterproof Pants: If you plan on participating in snow activities, waterproof pants are a must. They will keep you dry and protect against wet snow and icy conditions.
  • Hats, Gloves, and Scarves: Don't forget to bring hats, gloves, and scarves to protect your extremities from the cold. Opt for materials such as wool or fleece that offer good insulation.
  • Thermal Socks: Invest in a good pair of thermal socks to keep your feet warm and dry. Look for socks made from merino wool or synthetic materials that wick away moisture.
  • Winter Boots: Choose a pair of waterproof and insulated winter boots with good traction. These will keep your feet warm and provide stability on slippery surfaces.
  • Thermal Underwear: To stay extra warm during extremely cold weather, consider packing thermal underwear. These are designed to trap body heat and provide an additional layer of insulation.
  • Neck Gaiter or Balaclava: Protect your face and neck from frostbite with a neck gaiter or balaclava. These will provide extra warmth and can be easily pulled up or down as needed.
  • Hand and Foot Warmers: If you struggle with keeping your hands and feet warm, consider packing hand and foot warmers. These small disposable packets generate heat and can be a lifesaver on extremely cold days.

Remember, layering is key when it comes to winter clothing. By packing a combination of base layers, mid-layers, and outerwear, you can adjust your clothing to the temperature and activity level throughout your trip. Don't forget to pack extras of essentials like gloves and socks in case they get wet or lost.

In conclusion, packing the right clothing items for a 4-day winter trip is essential for staying warm and comfortable. Consider the weather conditions and activities you have planned, and pack a combination of base layers, mid-layers, and outerwear to ensure you are prepared for any situation. Stay warm and enjoy your winter adventures!

When planning a winter trip, it is important to pack the right accessories and essentials to stay warm and comfortable in cold weather conditions. Here is a list of items you should consider including in your packing list for a winter trip:

  • Warm Clothing: Pack enough warm clothing, including sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, thermal underwear, and a heavy coat or parka. Layering your clothing is a good idea as it allows you to adjust your body temperature easily.
  • Hat, Gloves, and Scarf: These accessories are essential to protect your head, hands, and neck from the cold weather. Opt for hats that cover your ears and gloves that are insulated and waterproof.
  • Thermal Socks and Boots: Keep your feet warm and dry by wearing thermal socks and waterproof boots. This is particularly important if you plan on participating in outdoor activities such as skiing or hiking.
  • Hand and Feet Warmers: Hand and feet warmers can provide additional warmth during extremely cold temperatures. These disposable warmers are activated by shaking and can last for several hours.
  • Moisturizer and Lip Balm: Cold weather can cause dry skin and chapped lips, so make sure to pack moisturizer and lip balm to keep your skin hydrated and protected.
  • Sunglasses and Sunscreen: Even in winter, the sun can be harsh, especially when reflecting off snow. Protect your eyes with sunglasses and apply sunscreen to exposed skin to prevent sunburn.
  • Portable Charger: Cold temperatures can drain the battery life of your electronic devices quickly. A portable charger will ensure that you always have power for your phone and other gadgets.
  • Travel First Aid Kit: It's always a good idea to have a basic first aid kit with you. Include essentials such as band-aids, pain relievers, and any medication you may need.
  • Portable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important in any season. A portable water bottle will allow you to have access to water wherever you go, even in colder temperatures.
  • Travel Insurance: Winter trips can come with unexpected weather conditions, flight cancellations, or delays. Having travel insurance can provide you with peace of mind in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

Remember, this list is a general guideline, and you should adjust it based on your destination and planned activities. It is always a good idea to check the weather conditions and pack accordingly. Stay warm and enjoy your winter trip!

Essential Packing Tips for Your Royal Caribbean Cruise: What to Pack for the Perfect Vacation

When packing for a winter trip, it's important to carefully consider the number of pairs of shoes you bring. The weather conditions and planned activities will play a significant role in determining the appropriate footwear for your journey. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you decide how many pairs of shoes to pack for a 4-day winter trip:

  • Assess the weather forecast: Start by checking the weather forecast for your destination during the dates of your trip. Take note of the expected temperatures, precipitation levels, and any other weather factors that may affect your footwear choices.
  • Consider the planned activities: Think about the types of activities you'll be engaging in during your trip. Are you planning on skiing, snowboarding, or hiking? Will you be exploring urban areas or spending most of your time indoors? Different activities require different types of shoes, so make sure you pack accordingly.
  • Choose a versatile pair of boots: Regardless of your planned activities, it's always a good idea to bring at least one pair of sturdy winter boots. Look for boots that are waterproof, insulated, and have a good grip. These boots can be used for outdoor activities like hiking or exploring snowy landscapes, as well as for casual walks in the city.
  • Pack a pair of sneakers or walking shoes: If you're planning on spending a significant amount of time indoors or doing less strenuous activities, a comfortable pair of sneakers or walking shoes will come in handy. These shoes will provide you with the necessary support and comfort for walking around museums, shops, or restaurants.
  • Consider additional footwear needs: Depending on the specific requirements of your trip, you may also need to pack additional footwear. For example, if you plan on hitting the slopes, you'll need to bring snowboarding or skiing boots. If you're attending a formal event or have dinner reservations at a fancy restaurant, a pair of dress shoes might be necessary.
  • Minimize unnecessary shoes: While it's tempting to bring multiple pairs of shoes for different occasions, try to declutter your packing list. Remember that you'll be carrying your luggage, so minimizing unnecessary items is key. Stick to practical and versatile shoes that can be worn in multiple situations.
  • Consider the space and weight limitations: It's important to consider the space and weight limitations of your luggage. Winter shoes, especially boots, tend to be bulkier and heavier than summer footwear. Keep this in mind when deciding how many pairs of shoes to bring. A good strategy is to wear your bulkiest pair of shoes during travel to save space in your suitcase.

In conclusion, the number of pairs of shoes you should bring for a 4-day winter trip depends on the weather, activities, and specific needs of your journey. By carefully assessing these factors and following the step-by-step guide provided, you'll be able to pack the right amount of footwear for a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Remember to prioritize practicality, versatility, and comfort when making your shoe selection.

The Essential Checklist: What to Pack for Your Spain Adventure

When planning a 4-day winter trip, it is essential to consider the weather conditions and activities that will be enjoyed during the trip. Depending on the location and planned activities, packing winter gear and equipment such as a snow jacket or skiing gear may or may not be necessary.

Firstly, it is important to research and familiarize oneself with the weather patterns and average temperatures of the destination. If the location experiences harsh winter conditions with freezing temperatures, snowfall, and strong winds, packing appropriate winter gear is highly recommended. A snow jacket is essential to provide insulation and protection against the cold, while also keeping the body dry in case of snowfall or rain.

Additionally, if the trip involves activities such as skiing, snowboarding, or any other winter sports, packing skiing gear becomes necessary. Skiing gear typically includes ski boots, skis, poles, goggles, and hats. These are specific equipment required to engage in winter sports and ensure safety and comfort while participating in such activities.

Even if the trip does not involve skiing or other winter sports, it is still advisable to pack layers of warm clothing for the duration of the trip. This includes thermal wear, sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, hats, gloves, and warm socks. These clothing items will help to trap body heat and keep individuals warm during outdoor activities or sightseeing.

It is important to note that even if the destination might have a milder winter climate, unexpected weather changes can occur. For instance, a sunny day might suddenly turn into a chilly and windy one, necessitating the need for winter gear. Packing winter gear ensures that individuals are prepared for any weather changes and allows them to remain comfortable in varying conditions.

In terms of footwear, it is also crucial to pack appropriate winter boots or shoes that are waterproof, insulated, and have good traction. This will prevent slips, keep the feet warm, and protect against wet conditions such as snow or slush.

Lastly, it is advisable to consider the duration of outdoor activities. If the trip involves spending long periods of time outside, packing additional layers, such as a fleece jacket or thermal leggings, is recommended to provide extra warmth and comfort.

In conclusion, when planning a 4-day winter trip, it is necessary to pack appropriate winter gear and equipment depending on the location, activities, and weather conditions. A snow jacket, skiing gear, and layers of warm clothing are essential for staying warm, comfortable, and safe during the trip. It is always better to be prepared for any weather changes and variations in temperature, ensuring a pleasant and enjoyable winter getaway.

Essential Items to Pack for a Memorable Three-Day Trip in Wales

When packing for a 4-day winter trip, there are several additional items and considerations that you should keep in mind to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Winter travel necessitates extra attention to warmth, layering, and protection from the elements. Here are some helpful tips to guide you:

  • Check the weather forecast: Before you start packing, it is essential to know the expected weather conditions during your trip. This will give you an idea of the average temperatures, precipitation levels, and the need for additional layers or specific gear.
  • Pack warm and versatile clothing: Layering is key when dressing for winter. Make sure you have a good selection of thermal base layers, sweaters or fleeces, and a waterproof and insulated outer shell. Opt for materials such as wool or synthetic fibers that provide insulation even when wet. Pack enough socks, gloves, and a hat to keep your extremities warm.
  • Invest in quality footwear: During winter, it is crucial to have proper footwear that can withstand cold temperatures and provide traction on slippery surfaces. Warm and waterproof boots or shoes with good insulation are a must. Consider getting a pair with a non-slip sole or traction devices like crampons for added stability.
  • Don't forget about accessories: Accessories can make a big difference in winter travel. Pack a scarf, neck gaiter, or balaclava to protect your face and neck from the cold wind. Thermal or woolen socks will help keep your feet warm, and hand warmers can provide instant heat when needed. A lightweight, packable down jacket can be a versatile and warm addition to your luggage.
  • Prepare for wet and snowy conditions: Winter trips often mean encountering snow, slush, or rain. To protect your belongings, pack waterproof bags or use waterproof cases for electronic devices. Bring a compact umbrella, pack a reusable rain poncho, and consider carrying a waterproof cover for your backpack or day bag.
  • Consider the activities you'll be doing: Think about the specific activities you'll be participating in during your winter trip. If you plan on skiing, snowboarding, or any other winter sports, pack appropriate equipment and gear. If you're planning on taking scenic hikes, bring hiking poles and consider traction devices for your shoes.
  • Don't forget the essentials: Alongside the specific winter gear, remember to pack all your usual travel essentials, such as toiletries, medications, and travel documents. It's also a good idea to pack a basic first aid kit, including items for treating cold-related conditions like frostbite or hypothermia.
  • Consider the weight and size of your luggage: Winter clothing tends to be bulkier and heavier than summer attire. Make sure to pack efficiently and consider the weight and size restrictions of your chosen transportation method. In some cases, it might be more convenient to rent certain gear at your destination instead of bringing it with you.

In summary, packing for a 4-day winter trip requires additional consideration compared to other types of travel. Taking the weather forecast, layering your clothing, investing in quality winter gear, and considering the specific activities you'll be doing are all important steps to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip. With proper preparation, you'll be well-equipped to embrace the winter wonderland and make the most of your adventure.

Miscellaneous

  • ✅ Snacks: Pack some snacks for the journey, especially if you have dietary restrictions or preferences.
  • ✅ Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle.
  • ✅ Entertainment: Bring a book, magazine, or other forms of entertainment for the trip.
  • ✅ Travel pillow and blanket: Make your journey more comfortable with a travel pillow and blanket.

Remember, this packing list is a starting point, and you can customize it based on your destination, activities, and personal preferences. Be sure to check any specific requirements or restrictions for your mode of transportation and accommodation.

Packing light is a skill that can make your travels more enjoyable and hassle-free. Here are some tips to help you pack light for your 4-day trip:

  • Plan your outfits : Before you start packing, plan your outfits for each day. Choose items that can be mixed and matched to create different looks.
  • Choose versatile clothing : Opt for clothing that can be dressed up or down and worn in different combinations. This will help you pack fewer items while still having a variety of outfits.
  • Pack travel-sized toiletries : Instead of bringing full-sized toiletries, invest in travel-sized containers and fill them with your favorite products. This will save space and comply with airline regulations.
  • Wear your bulkiest items : If you’re traveling with bulky items like a jacket or boots, wear them during your journey to save space in your suitcase.
  • Roll your clothes : Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save space and help prevent wrinkles.
  • Use packing cubes : Packing cubes can help you stay organized and maximize the space in your suitcase. Use them to separate different types of clothing or accessories.
  • Minimize shoes : Shoes can take up a lot of space in your suitcase. Try to limit yourself to 2-3 pairs of shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits.
  • Pack lightweight fabrics : Opt for lightweight fabrics that are easy to pack and won’t take up much space in your suitcase.
  • Consider laundry options : If you’re staying at a hotel or Airbnb with laundry facilities, you can pack fewer clothes and do laundry during your trip.
  • Leave room for souvenirs : If you plan on buying souvenirs during your trip, leave some extra space in your suitcase to bring them back home.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to pack light and have more room for souvenirs or other items you may acquire during your trip.

Tips to Pack a Carry-on Suitcase

If you’re planning to travel with just a carry-on suitcase for your 4-day trip, here are some additional tips to help you make the most of your limited space:

  • Check airline restrictions : Before you start packing, familiarize yourself with the airline’s carry-on size and weight restrictions. This will help you choose the right suitcase and avoid any issues at the airport.
  • Pack travel-sized toiletries : As mentioned earlier, opt for travel-sized toiletries to comply with airline regulations and save space in your carry-on.
  • Wear your bulkiest items : Similar to packing tips for a larger suitcase, wear your bulkiest items, such as jackets or boots, during your journey to save space.
  • Use compression bags : Compression bags can help you maximize the space in your carry-on suitcase by compressing your clothing and removing excess air.
  • Pack essentials in your personal item : If you have a personal item, such as a backpack or tote bag, use it to pack your essentials, such as electronics, documents, and any items you may need during the journey.
  • Minimize liquids : If possible, choose solid or powder-based alternatives for your toiletries to avoid the hassle of packing liquids in a clear plastic bag.

Remember to always check the latest regulations and restrictions for carry-on luggage, as they may vary depending on the airline and destination.

3. Warm Socks And Gloves

A fresh pair of socks is another piece of clothing that can make your day. Make sure to pick the softest and most comfortable ones so your toes can stay toasty, whether it’s indoor or outdoor.

Tips For Winter Travel Packing

Aside from a great   winter travel checklist , you may want to know some tips and tricks for a smooth trip to a winter wonderland. These are plain and simple at first glance but can make a world of difference, especially when you want to travel light and hassle-free.

1. Choose A Perfect Backpack

We can’t stress enough how crucial a good backpack is for every winter trip packing list. Choosing the right one allows a traveller to maximise the space, bringing along the essentials, and save him or her from hours of packing and figuring out what to take and what to leave behind.

Furthermore, a water-resistant feature is a must. It protects your personal belongings from the water of the melting snow. CabinZero’s products check many, if not all, of the boxes. You should check out our recommendations in the next section.

2. Bring Along Several Layers

Winter Trip Packing Tip

Photo by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash

Just like a polar bear whose thick layer of fat and fur keeps it warm, we dress in layers to make ourselves all cosy and snuggle even when the temperature is rapidly falling. Winter vacation clothes   are all about form and function and the balance of these two elements.

Typically, there are three layers: the base, the middle, and the outer. You should wear each of them in a “loose” way instead of a tightening manner. Warm air is trapped between the skin and clothes this way, thus you are insulated better against the cold.

3. Packing Cubes For Efficient Space-Saving

After using these cubes once to compartmentalise the items on the packing list for winter vacation, anyone will become a believer. You won’t believe how they not only keep your things neatly organised but also allow easy access to everything when you need them the most.

4. Plan Ahead What You Will Wear

Winter vacation packing

When you visualise your outfits in advance, you will have an easier time deciding what to wear on the trip. Another tip is packing neutral-coloured winter vacation clothes. This makes the mixing and matching a breeze to get through.

5. Use Smaller-Sized Toiletries

Choosing travel-size shampoos, lotions, makeup, and hair products instead of their regular and bulky variants is another good idea. Or better yet, leave them off the winter travel checklist and buy them at your destination’s local stores. However, you should research beforehand to find out the availability and price of those items.

Fret not! This section will provide some insights into the most common question about things to pack for winter trips.

1. Can I Wear Jeans In The Snow?

Given how comfortable jeans are, people want to wear them in every setting, even in winter. Sadly, denim is not the material with the best insulation. However, we have good news for you,   flannel-lined jeans   are specifically designed for cold days in mind. You should opt for those instead of normal jeans when choosing this type of material for winter vacation clothes.

2. How Do I Pack Bulky Winter Clothes Neatly?

Sometimes it’s a headache trying to pack everything on the   winter road trip packing list   into the bag. With chilly winds come heavier pieces of clothing one must wear. Here are some tips and tricks to help you have an easier time schlepping all your winter outfits to the destination:

  • Rolling instead of folding: To maximise the use of space, the Ranger Rolling method is the way to go.
  • Wear bulkier clothes on yourself: This is especially handy when you are on a plane.
  • Prioritise pieces that you will wear at least twice: Avoid packing anything that you won’t use often.
  • Pack light layers and accessories like scarves: These won’t take up much space and can keep you warm if used properly.

3. What Should I Pack For A Child On Winter Trips?

Winter road trip packing lists need some slight changes when you travel with the little ones in the colder months. Depending on the ages of your kids, you may want to bring specific things to suit their own needs. Aside from clothing pieces or foods and snacks, you may want to add the following items:

How to Pack for Winter Vacation Trips

1. wear bulky items on the plane  .

If you’re wondering how to pack for a winter vacation, there is a trick or two that you can use for winter travel packing. The simplest way to save space, especially if you’re flying, is to wear all of your bulkiest and heaviest clothing and pack the smaller, lighter items.

I always wear my heaviest sweater and coat and cram a light down jacket into my luggage.  It doesn’t matter if it is too hot on the plane – you can take it off, but it doesn’t count towards your carryon allowance!

2. Layers are Key

Another key thing to keep in mind when you’re packing for winter vacation trips is to have plenty of layers.

When you wear layers, air is trapped between the layers and this air heats up and helps keep you warmer.

Plus, if you have layers, it is easy to adjust by taking them off or adding to them when the temperature changes.  And, this way your clothing can serve multiple purposes.  A T-shirt can add insulation during the day under other warmer winter vacation clothes and then be something casual to wear at night in a warm hotel room or to bed.

3. Wear neutral colors

A lot of active outdoor wear comes in bright colors so you stand out.  In general, though, I prefer to pack neutral layers, so that I can mix and match layers easily and still look good.

A dark outer coat and pants with neutral tops and sweaters care super easy to mix and match and no matter what combination of layers you use, you’ll look good. This versatility helps you be able to take fewer items and not overpack.

4. Fabric matters

Wool keeps you warm and is water resistant.  A sweater with at least 20% merino wool is a great investment.

A fleece (or polar fleece) is 100% polyester, but will also keep you warm.  Wool typically takes longer to soak in moisture than a fleece, and unlike fleece, insulates even when wet.  However, wool also takes longer to dry out once it gotten wet.

Down is also great insulation and has the added advantage of squishing down super small.  A trick for saving space: I squash my down jacket into a stuff sack ( get one here if you don’t have one) and it is amazing how small it gets and how little space in my luggage it takes up.

For outdoor active wear, water-proof synthetic material like Gore-Tex is best.

What to Pack for a Winter Vacation

Here are the essential items for your winter travel packing list / winter vacation checklist.

2 Jackets

N/A

Your packing list for winter travel should include two jackets.  First a bulky outer jacket (wear this one to save space in your luggage) and second a down jacket that you can squash down really small and it weighs next to nothing.

I have written a comprehensive guide to the best jackets for extreme cold weather , which you can check out to see exactly what to look for, as well as detailed reviews and recommendations.

For women, the best winter jacket is the Columbia Women’s Heavenly Hooded Jacket

For men, the top choice for best winter coat is the North Face Men’s Apex Insulated Jacket

2 Sweaters or 1 Sweater and a Fleece

N/A

When deciding what to pack for cold weather vacation destinations, you can choose whether to bring two wool sweaters or one sweater and a fleece.  Either way, the sweaters shouldn’t be too bulky unless you’re taking a road trip, in which case space is a little less important.

I have mentioned some pros and cons to wool and fleece above.  On balance, I like to take one of each, but if you really love wool, and won’t be hiking, go with two sweaters.  if you’re going to be hiking, then definitely take a fleece, as they wick moisture away from your body better than wool.

I love this Irish 100% merino wool sweater for men

I also love this Irish 100% merino wool cable knit sweater for women

There are great options for fleeces from Columbia.  You can pick up a Columbia Women’s Fleece Jacket and a Columbia Men’s Fleece Jacket using these links.

2-3 Collared Shirts

N/A

Make sure your collared shirts are for warm weather.  Flannel is a great winter fabric, and having at least one plaid flannel short is a personal favorite.

Any shorts you have in your closet are fine, but if you want to get something especially for your vacation, I’m loving this vintage look plaid shirt lined with sherpa wool.

For women, these ‘boyfriend shirts’ are super cute.

1-2 T-Shirts

T-shorts are super versatile.  You can layer them underneath your other clothing, wear them in a warm cabin or hotel room and even wear them to bed.

2 Pairs of Pants

Other essential things to pack for winter vacation destinations are pants.  It’s best to go with one pair of blue denim jeans, because they go with everything, and another dark pair, since they also go with anything and they also don’t show dirt, so you can wear them more than once.

Check out options for women here and a selection of men’s jeans here .

1 Pairs of Sweatpants

N/A

When you’re packing for winter trip destinations, don’t forget a pair of comfy sweatpants.  They’re perfect for lounging around your cabin, hotel room, Airbnb or campground at the end of the day.

If need some, pick up a pair of Icebreaker Merino sweatpants for men here

Or the Icebreaker Merino sweatpants for women here .

A skirt for going out at night will help keep your vacation outfits fresh and fun.

1 Pair of Warm Lined Leggings

Leggings are super versatile for women.  Make them even warmer by taking a pair that are lined with either fleece or wool. If you need some, pick up a pair right here .

2-3 Pairs of Thermal Underwear

Thermal underwear is one of the key elements to successful layering in cold weather.  You should have both tops and bottoms.  They really do make a huge difference.

The best thermal clothing for cold weather comes from Thermajane for women and Thermajohn for men.

N/A

Whether it’s a long wrap around scarf or a neck gaiter, you need something to keep your neck warm.

It’s hard to wrong with this cashmere plaid scarf .  It comes in multiple colors, but it’s best to go with a neutral color so it goes with all of your winter vacation outfits.

1 Warm Hat

You really just need one hat, but they don’t take up much space, so if you want to mix and match and have a few different looks in your photos, you could easily take an extra one or two.  You definitely need at least one beanie, though, that covers your ears and keeps your head warm.

I like this unisex striped one .

1 Pair of Warm Gloves

You’ve got a few options here, depending on just how cold it will be. If you’re headed somewhere super cold, then I recommend these gloves for men and women in extreme cold .

For a more everyday version, take a look at these unisex knitted gloves . They have touchscreen fingertips, so you can use your phone or iPad without taking your gloves off.

1 Pair of Boots

N/A

If you’re going to be hiking, then check out my recommended winter hiking boots below.  But if not, then a more stylish option for men is this Red Wing Heritage Men’s Iron Ranger Boot .

For women, a great stylish cold weather boot is the Sorel women’s Winter Carnival boot .

Check them out on the links or, if you want to go more in depth, read my detailed guides to the Best Men’s Boots for Winter or the Best Winter Boots for Women .

Several Pairs of Warm Wool Socks

No packing list for cold weather vacation destinations is complete without lots of warm socks.  I always take more than I think I’ll need.  I learned the hard way that if all your socks are wet, dirty or both, you will have a very uncomfortable winter trip!  Socks take up almost no space, so I always take more than I think I’ll need!

If you need more warm winter socks, get some more right here .

Rain Jacket

N/A

If there is any chance you will be outdoors when it’s raining or snowing, then you should take a rain jacket. An umbrella works for walking around a city in summer, but when you’re in the great outdoor or anywhere when it’s snowing, an umbrella doesn’t really cut it.

A tip: size up, so it fits easily over all your layers.

Check out this men’s rain jacket on Amazon .

Check out women’s jackets here

Toiletries/Makeup/ Chapstick & Moisturizer + Medication

Take all your toiletries with you, but if you’re flying, keep in mind the restrictions in liquids in your carryon (either check your toiletries or take travel-sized bottles).

Cold winter weather can really dry out your skin and lips, so you will definitely need moisturizer and a chapstick.

Travel Insurance

You should take travel insurance on every vacation, but it’s even more important in winter, when weather can play havoc with the best laid travel plans.

A great insurance option is Travelex.  It has coverage for all you’ll need. You can swap this link for  either choose the best travel insurance plan for your trip here or get a quote right now:

728x90 Get Quote

This is true whether you’re traveling in winter or in summer, you will want to make sure you have a comfortable daypack.  They are essential when hiking, but super helpful no matter what type of vacation you are having if you’ll be leaving your hotel for the day.

You want to make sure it is comfortable and easy to access. I like the Osprey series.

For men,  check out the Osprey Talon series on Amazon here .

For women, check out the Osprey Sirrus for women here .

N/A

Camera + extra Batteries

N/A

I love the GoPro for travel cameras.  they are waterproof and durable and take photos, video and even streaming! Plus, there is a built-in stabilization feature, which makes them a great choice for action shots when traveling.

Keep in mind that cold weather really drains batteries, so keep the camera and batteries warm.  Taking extra batteries is also a good idea.

Check out the GoPro HERO 12 here .

Polarized Lens Filters

Photography in winter can be tricky, because of the extra glare off snow.  However, a polarizing filter can reduce glare on snow and ice. It’s most effective when the sun is off to your left or right.

You can get a polarizing filter of your GoPro here .

Winter Hiking and Sports Gear

Winter has plenty of opportunities for fun outdoor activities, like hiking and snowshoeing.  If you’ll be doing this, make sure you have everything on my Winter Hiking Gear List .

Also check out my Guide to The Best Snowshoes and Guide to The Best Hiking Microspikes

The best winter hiking boots (men’s) are the Salomon Men’s X Ultra 4 Mid Winter CS Waterproof Hiking Boot s. Read detailed reviews of these and other top winter men’s hiking boots .

The Ultimate Winter Packing List: 30 Cold Weather Essentials

Provides a comprehensive list of cold-weather essentials for winter travel, including clothing, gear, and packing tips.

Written by

While taking a day trip, a road trip, or a vacation is preferable during the warmer months of the year, taking some time away during the winter is often necessary. Whether you enjoy the outdoor recreation, like skiing and snowboarding, that comes with winter or the solitude of spending time in a cabin in the snowy mountains, there are different sets of cold weather essentials you must think about when packing for winter weather travel.

The USA is a large country, but many of us experience cold, freezing temperatures throughout the winter months. With the season comes different types of clothing, safety gear, and essentials altogether. The Only In Your State staff is spread out across the country and has some input into what to pack during the winter. Here is a comprehensive list of cold-weather essentials to consider taking on your winter getaway.

alt

Winter Travel Essentials

Traveling during the winter is not for the faint of heart, but can be a rewarding way to enjoy the cold and the snow. From sports gear that can only be used in winter to items like chapstick, moisturizer, and a day pack to carry your gear, take a look at some of our favorite winter travel essentials:

Winter Sports Gear

alt

Winter brings with it the opportunity to enjoy sports and other recreational activities you just can’t experience any other time of the year. REI Co-op is perhaps one of the best stores to procure outdoor winter sports gear. If you’re in the market for a new snowboard , a set of downhill skis , cross-country skis , snowshoes , or ice skates , there’s no better place than REI.

alt

If you’re traveling by car to your winter destination, you may also want to consider purchasing a roof rack to carry your gear. The Thule Motion XT XL Roof Box , for example, is easy to mount on top of your car’s roof, and it can hold between five and seven pairs of skis.

alt

One thing that many of us often forget on our cold weather packing list is chapstick. We suggest the 100% Natural Lip Balm by Poppy & Pout . Made with beeswax, vitamin E, and organic coconut oil, this cruelty-free lip balm will help prevent chapped lips that happen so often in the cold months.

Moisturizer

alt

Moisturizer is another essential to add to your winter packing list. To prevent dry skin, you’ll want to pick out a face and body moisturizer, like Raw Elements Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30 and a hand cream, like Burt’s Bees Shea Butter Hand Repair Cream or L’Occitane, Shea Butter Hand Cream .

alt

Of course, we need something to carry some of our gear on our cold-weather trips, especially when we hit the slopes. REI has a wide range of day bags that are sturdy, roomy, and well-made. Check out the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Travel Day Pack made of durable nylon or the MYSTERY RANCH 2-Day Assault Pack with an adjustable harness and several pockets to organize what you need to carry.

Travel Outfits Winter: What To Pack For A Snow Trip

One of the most important ways we can stay warm during the winter months is through our choice of clothes. Layering is the name of the game this time of year and offers us the best chance to avoid hypothermia and frostbite. And don’t forget the footwear – a good pair of winter boots and wool socks can do wonders for our soles. Here are some of the items you should add to your snow trip packing list:

Base Layers

alt

From base layers like long underwear and fleece-lined leggings to outer layers like water-resistant pants, a down jacket, or a heavy coat, we can stay as toasty warm as possible.

  • Sweaters: A good sweater is not only warm but can be fashionable as well. Take a look at some of the choices on L.L.Bean, a leader in outdoor clothing. Offering sweaters for both women and men , there are some wonderful options to choose from.
  • Lined Leggings/Long Underwear: Base layers like long silk underwear pants or fleece base layer pants can work wonders when worn underneath snow pants.
  • Wool Base Layers: Light and breathable, Merino wool base layers are some of the warmest and most comfortable around. Best of all, they are thin enough, so if you’re short on packing space, they’re the way to go.

Staff Pick: Sr. Content Editor Megan Shute and her husband love the wool sweaters from Quince , "These wool pieces are not only affordable, but retain heat well, are breathable, and easy-to-pack! There’s nothing better for winter adventures!"

alt

Once you’ve layered up with leggings or long underwear, long-sleeve Merino wool t-shirts and tights, and sweaters, it’s time to throw on your outerwear. Choosing a good jacket, snow pants, hats or beanies, scarves, and gloves should not be taken lightly. Here are some options for you to consider:

  • Hats/Gloves/Scarf: Covering your neck and head is important as these are the areas of the body that lose heat the fastest. And a pair of gloves or mittens will help prevent your fingers from getting frostbite.
  • Packable Down Jacket : Down jackets provide the ultimate in warmth, and one that is packable will save space while you travel.
  • Water-Resistant Pants : What’s worse than feeling cold during the winter? How about cold and wet? Prevent being both cold and wet with a pair of water-resistant pants.
  • A wool sweater is also a great item to bring along.

Staff Pick: Social Media Manager Kristen Taylor loves tech gloves that make staying warm while using your phone a breeze. These REI Co-Op ones are fantastic, but if you want to splurge, you will love Vessi gloves .

How To Keep Your Feet Warm

alt

Don’t forget to choose a good pair of boots as well as some warm socks for your time out in the snow this winter. Here are some of our picks:

  • Weatherproof Boots: A pair of durable weatherproof boots is one of the top cold-weather must-haves. Sorel makes excellent boots for all weather conditions, and we love Teva brand boots , too.
  • Thermal Insoles : Putting a pair of thermal insoles inside your weatherproof boots will help keep your feet a bit warmer in below-freezing temperatures.
  • Wool Socks : Of course, a pair of wool socks should also be added to your winter vacation packing list. Not only do they provide cushioning, but they help regulate the temperature in your feet.

Staff Pick: Social Media Coordinator Madison Silveira and her sister live in snowy Utah love these walking cleats that you can add to your shoes for icy roads and sidewalks!

Travel Hacks For Winter & Cold Weather Must-Haves

Packing can be a bit challenging in the winter. After all, everything has a bit more bulk than our summer travel essentials. We love a good travel hack and hope you find our packing tips helpful.

How To Pack Winter Clothes In A Carry On

alt

Winter clothing is normally thicker and heavier than our spring and summer clothes. So, what are some of the things we can do to make packing our cold-weather essentials easier? Here are some ideas to help you pack light:

  • Osprey Ozone 2-Wheel Carry-On Luggage : This is a preferred brand for those who travel often. This Osprey is durable and has two wheels, a laptop sleeve, and a Travel Sentry Luggage ID to protect your bag from getting lost.
  • On travel days, wear your heaviest clothes , like your winter coat, to minimize what goes into your bag. If you’re intent on using a carry-on bag only while traveling during the winter, it’s best to keep your jacket and other bulky items on your person. Everything else, like your toiletries, a pair of shoes, and all your warm layers, can go in your carry-on luggage, especially if you have compression bags or compression packing cubes , which are massive space savers.

alt

Make sure your clothing items are as soft, lightweight, and travel-friendly as possible. For a carry-on, it’s best to roll like items together.

Winter Road Trip Essentials

alt

Road trips require a bit more preparation than flying somewhere. It’s always a good idea to bring your car to a mechanic to get checked out before going on a long road trip. Make sure your car isn’t due for an oil change, and have your tires and brakes checked. Double-checking the terms of your car insurance is also a good idea. During the winter, there are also several road trip essentials to keep in mind. Here are some road trip travel tips to consider:

  • Thermal Blankets : On the off chance you’re traveling somewhere and get trapped in a storm, a thermal blanket can be a lifesaver.
  • Hand & Foot Warmers : Singe-use hand warmers and foot warmers are absolute cold weather essentials, especially for all the time you spend outdoors in the winter.
  • Ice Scraper : When you travel by car during the winter, you may encounter a snowstorm depending on where you’re traveling. It’s imperative to have an ice scraper in your car for times your windshield and windows get snow or a layer of ice. One with a brush on the other end comes in handy and can be used to brush away the bits of ice and snow you scrape off.
  • Snow Shovel : In the event there’s a snowstorm, having a snow shovel in your vehicle can also be quite helpful, especially if you have to dig it out of a snow bank.
  • Tire Chains : To gain more traction in a snowy, icy situation, tire chains are a must-have in the winter. And, luckily, they are quite easy to place over your vehicle’s tires.

Staff Pick: Operations Manager Andrea Limke thinks these are the absolute best windshield wipers for winter weather.

alt

If you had no idea what to pack for a snow trip before, we hope that this list of cold-weather essentials helps. It can certainly be a bit overwhelming to prepare for winter travel, but once you have it down, you’ll be able to enjoy the snowy season without the stress and worry. We would also love to know any of your recommendations from your winter travel packing list!

Why TSA Pre-Check Is Worth Every Penny

When it comes to traveling by air, one of the most dreadful things is having to deal with everything that leads up to you actually getting to your terminal. Between waiting in long lines to check in and go through security, most travelers are doing everything they can to speed things along.

If you’re a frequent traveler who does all they can to make getting through the airport a quick and painless process, you might want want to look into joining the TSA PreCheck program, not to be confused with other trusted traveler programs for U.S. Citizens and lawful permanent residents like Clear or Global Entry, which aids in international travel.

Is TSA PreCheck Worth It?

If you are a frequent flyer, TSA PreCheck is absolutely worth it.

alt

Frequent travelers who are interested in joining the program will be required to pay a non-refundable application fee of $78 dollars and complete an in-person interview. The fee covers a 5-year membership and for TSA to conduct a background check and screen potential members.

alt

After years of meaning to join TSA Pre-Check and it slipping lower and lower on my priority list, I finally took the plunge this summer and officially have my Known Travel ID number in hand. My husband has had TSA PreCheck for years, and I was tired of splitting up through the security line so he could beeline to the closest airport coffee shop or skip the hassle of security screening with our toddler.

As a frequent flyer myself, if I had known how simple the process was beforehand, I would have signed up years ago, but I guess we’re better late than never.

Making A TSA PreCheck Appointment

The online application process for TSA Pre-Check is simple.

alt

Navigate to Transportation Security Administration government website , and click on “New Enrollment.” Check your eligibility, fill out the form, and make an appointment at your nearest enrollment center.

I made my appointment two weeks in advance at the Staples near my house, and while this location was simple to find and navigate, I have heard that many TSA PreCheck enrollment centers are in unassuming storefronts that can seem a bit, well, unassuming.

The In-Person Appointment

When I arrived, and found the TSA PreCheck kiosk in the store, which happened to be a makeshift cubicle (pictured below).

alt

Once escorted inside, I gave the worker my passport. He asked me a few questions about myself, including the city where I was born, my maiden name, and other identifying information. The in-person appointment includes fingerprinting, taking a photograph, and giving your signature.

The entire TSA Precheck application process — including making the appointment and the appointment itself — took less than 15 minutes, and all I needed was my passport. If you don’t have a passport, you can bring in other supporting documents to prove your identity and citizenship status, including your driver's license, federally-issued ID, and birth certificate. Your application will walk you through which documents you’ll need to bring with you.

Getting Your Known Traveler Number

alt

Three days after my appointment, during a holiday weekend, no less, I received an email that my application was approved. At the time of publication, most applicants receive their Known Traveler Number (KTN) within three to five days, though some applications can take up to 60 days. I added my KTN to an upcoming flight reservation and will report back with any issues as I use TSA PreCheck to get through airport security checkpoints for the first time. I look forward to the time-saving of avoiding regular security lines.

TSA PreCheck Fee Reimbursement

alt

If you’re on the fence about TSA PreCheck membership or are worried about the cost, many rewards credit cards will pay for the fee in the form of a statement credit or reimbursement. Two of my current travel credit cards – the American Express Platinum card and the IHG One Rewards Premier – offer this perk. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is a popular option among my friends as well. Other credit cards that offer this perk include travel cards from Bank of America, Capital One, Citi Bank, and MasterCard, as well as various airlines, from American Airlines and Delta to Southwest and United.

TSA PreCheck Benefits

Tips for packing efficiently for winter trips and holidays

Photographer and travel blogger Lean Timms knows a thing or two about packing for holidays in colder weather.  ( Supplied: Lean Timms )

If you're planning a winter getaway and you already feel exhausted by the thought of packing, you're not alone.

How many puffer jackets should you try and shove into that suitcase? How many long pairs of pants do you really need to take?

Photographer and travel blogger Lean Timms loves cold weather and braves travelling in the cold often.

Whether you're packing for a three-day trip or planning a longer stay, Lean offers her best tips to help you pack light on your next trip.

Be pragmatic

More important than the specifics of what you pack, is how you go about thinking about packing for a trip.

According to Lean, it's less about hard and fast rules and more about general principles.

When looking to pack light, especially during winter travels, you have to be willing to be pragmatic and make some tough choices, she says.

While it can be tempting to think you need to pack a quarter of your wardrobe, especially in winter, Lean says that what you'll end up wearing on holiday is often quite a similar reflection of what you wear at home.

"There's no point taking my entire wardrobe just in case there's a one-off scenario," she says.

"If I'm really desperate for something, or all of a sudden I want to go on some crazy adventure that I haven't packed for … I'll sort it out then. I'll hire or buy something."

Streamlining your toiletries can save major space

A tip Lean offers for saving weight and space is to streamline your toiletries as much as possible.

"I'm pretty light on my toiletries," she says. That's even in winter when our skin gets dry and sometimes needs a few extra products.

For example, when Lean travels, she takes oil that acts as a face, body and hair oil, and uses a bar that doubles as a shampoo and body bar.

"I think the toiletries thing has just changed my life – going from having bottles to having one shampoo and soap bar. It's also more sustainable," Lean says.

The general principle of being selective applies here. It might not be practical for you to carry one or two products, but thinking consciously about how you can minimise the products you use while you're away can help lighten your load.

Even for her longer trips, Lean manages to pack all her items into this waterproofed leather duffel bag.  ( Supplied: Lean Timms )

Focus on packing winter essentials

Only packing clothing and items you'll wear and use multiple times can help reduce the likelihood that you'll over-pack.

"When you're travelling, if you're not going to wear things more than once it's probably not the best thing to pack — with the exception of a special occasion," Lean says.

As far as specific items go, she offers a general guide on the types of clothing and quantities you might want to consider packing for a week-long trip:

  • A good jacket. When considering space and weight, a down jacket is often a lighter option. A jacket that comes up high can keep your neck toasty and means you don't have to pack a scarf.
  • Two sets of thermal tops and bottoms to wear underneath clothing. If you have the budget for them, Lean recommends thermals made out of merino wool. However, so long as they're thick, it doesn't matter too much.
  • A pair of shoes for both day and night. There's no specific rule on the type of footwear here, you can go with whatever suits the nature of the trip.
  • A fresh pair of socks for each day. Lean says it's a good idea to have a couple of thicker socks if you're not going to take a pair of slippers.
  • A fresh pair of underwear for each day.
  • A T-shirt for every other day.
  • Two to three warm jumpers.
  • Two pairs of pants.
  • A nice dress shirt.
  • A beanie or hat.

The above guide can be adapted to the length and nature of your trip.

"There's so many dependencies," Lean adds.

"If you're going somewhere adventurous, what you pack is going to look much different to what you pack if you're staying at a hotel."

It's a simple principle, but one that's worth reiterating anyway — when travelling between locations, Lean recommends wearing your bulkier items.

As for choosing luggage, Lean usually takes a simple leather duffel bag, even for her longer stays. However, a small suitcase can also work well and is easy to transport. Lean adds that it can be worth waterproofing whatever luggage you take.
