While flying alone can be incredibly stress-inducing, traveling can be even more so for large groups. However, in an attempt to appeal to a larger market and offer travelers an anxiety-free experience, American Airlines, the largest airline in the world, makes group travel easier via the American Airlines Group Travel feature that facilitates every step of the way.

Over the years, American Airlines has stepped up its group travel policies for a better customer experience. But before we get into its policies, what constitutes group travel? According to the carrier , group travel includes ten or more passengers flying together on the same itinerary. With that settled, let's look at its group travel policies.

(Still) The World's Largest: The American Airlines Fleet In 2024

American Airlines won't be retiring any of its aircraft for the next six years. Much of what you see now is what you'll get through 2030.

Terms and conditions

Like with any special ticket, travelers must meet specific criteria and adhere to attain the benefits. Group travel is no different. For starters, group travel on American Airlines is only available to groups of ten or more passengers. According to the Dallas-based carrier, groups traveling on business can book a discounted flight ticket. Although groups flying for leisure also get discounted rates, they do not get the same discount. Although rare, as with any ticket, Americans clearly state that they have the right to cancel group bookings if the flight is unavailable or in the event of an emergency. Group travel can be booked in any cabin offered on American Airlines and to all destinations served by the airline or by its oneworld alliance partners.

The airline offers one free name change per ticket up to 48 hours before departure. This means that if a group member cannot make the flight, the organizer can switch their ticket for someone else as long as it is two days before departure. This gives group travel organizers lots of flexibility, as they can switch tickets instead of leaving the seat empty if the person cannot make the flight.

Other rules that must be followed include passengers that are traveling in groups must have at least one common flight segment; for any international outbound segment except from the United States to Canada or vice versa, the group will need to travel together, all groups members must begin their outbound travel on the same date, and each traveler needs to return within a week with the time difference between the first and last person returning can not exceed 168 hours apart. Lastly, groups can add members with the same or adjacent travel dates after booking the group ticket. It is important to note that if any of the requirements are not met, American can cancel their reservations, meaning unless travelers adhere to all the conditions, they will not be able to book a group flight.

Booking group travel

As with any trip, planning a group trip begins with the booking process, and there are multiple ways to book a group ticket. However, when booking for a large group, you must undergo a slightly different process than booking one or even five tickets for a future trip. The first way for groups to reserve tickets for more than ten passengers (as classified by American as group travel) is to book tickets under bunch travel on the American Airlines website. Group travel can be booked up to eleven months in advance and as late as 48 hours before the flight's scheduled departure. However, booking as much as possible in advance is suggested to ensure there are enough seats on the aircraft to accommodate the whole party.

As such, similarly, when booking a flight on American Airlines, someone looking to purchase over ten tickets will head to American's website and select the "Group Travel" Option. Unlike booking a regular ticket, group organizers will have to request a group rate first before being able to book. After selecting the "Group Travel" Option, a series of prompts will pop up, all needing to be answered regarding essential details about the upcoming trip. After the data, which ranges from the flight details to the number of people on the group ticket, is inputted, the carrier will reach out with a quote (price) for the flights. After receiving the quote, there are two options: the first is to purchase all the tickets then, or the other is to lock in the quote; as the price often increases as the departure date gets closer, a person from the group will have to pay a small deposit to hold the tickets. Then, they will pay the total amount as the departure date approaches. For the second option, once a deposit is made, American will ensure seats on the flight will be allocated.

The Story Of American Airlines - How The Airline Is What It Is Today

American has a long history.

The other option for those who are not as tech-savvy is to book over the phone. American has a personalized group travel desk where customers can call a dedicated team that will assist in not only the booking process but also answer any questions a customer may have. Booking over the phone is similar to the online booking option, except in a faster manner.

Different fares and perks

For group bookings, there are two different types of fares: "Air Only" and "Zone Fare." For starters, "Air Only" fares are for ten or more people flying together from one or multiple origins to the same destination for any reason. For those who fit those criteria, Americans will offer a guaranteed fare. Some of the notable peaks of the "Air Only" fares include the ability to block space up to 330 days ahead of departure, automatic seat assignments, and return flight changes as long as it is within a six-day window, among others.

The other type of fare, known as "Zone Fare," is for groups of ten or more passengers from two or more countries traveling to the same destination. This ticket can be purchased for travel from the United States or Canada to any destination in Europe, the Pacific, North America, the Caribbean, or the Pacific. Some perks of the "Zone Fare" ticket include adding other names later, transparent pricing with set fares, flexible booking options and refundable tickets, and automatic seat assignments.

American Airlines not only makes it easy to purchase group travel but also makes it as appealing as possible. As previously stated, when booking group travel, each seat has discounted fares . Another perk is sitting together as a group. American ensures that as long as the ticket is booked in advance, they will try to seat group members together to stay connected.

Bottom line

American's newly established group travel platform makes traveling with friends and family easy and less expensive. However, to ensure a hassle-free experience, it's better to book as early as possible to tailor the trip to your liking.

We have made a list of the most frequently asked questions and their answers for you below.

A group trip consists of at least 10 passengers travelling together and who are entitled to seats. Please note that children under the age of 12 years may only travel if accompanied by adults.

Bookings for a group who are starting their journey in Germany, Austria or Switzerland can be requested online using the above form.

If your departure airport is not in one of these three countries, please contact a travel agency you trust to make your group booking. Travel agencies are kindly requested to contact their relevant Lufthansa service team.

The price for a group is calculated independently of the lowest online price. It is calculated individually according to capacity and can be higher than the single seat fare sold online. The number of seats available in the aircraft decreases per booking. It may therefore be the case that a seat is still available for an individual passenger at a lower price, but not to a group because of the number of travellers.

344 days – for a trip only using Lufthansa flights 344 days – for Lufthansa flights with the participation of Austrian Airlines and SWISS, providing the return flight is within this time frame.

Yes, providing the required group size of at least 10 people remains and the group terms and conditions permit it.

Summary invoices for group bookings can be requested via our groups service after the tickets have been issued.

What are airline alliances, and who's in them?

Alberto Riva

If you are an even moderately frequent flyer, you have taken advantage of the perks that airline alliances offer passengers. And if you've flown at all in the past two decades, you have heard their name spoken in an onboard announcement: Thank you for flying Air X, a member of the Y Alliance.

There are three of them: Star Alliance, SkyTeam and Oneworld, in order of size. They make connections and mileage collecting and spending easier. Since their appearance in the late 1990s, they have been a welcome innovation for flyers who have elite status, which gets recognized by all partner airlines . If you're a Delta Air Lines Medallion member, for example, you can get priority treatment from all other airlines that are members of SkyTeam.

Not everybody is a fan. Weekly magazine The Economist calls them price-fixing cartels , asserting that those benefits have come at the cost of higher fares because alliances reduce competition.

Pretty much every major airline is in an alliance, with relevant exceptions among the big global players being Emirates, Virgin Atlantic and TPG Awards winners Etihad and Virgin Australia. Several large regional airlines also aren't in; that's the case of Southwest, JetBlue and WestJet in North America, Ryanair and EasyJet in Europe, and Air Asia.

Code-share flights and mutual collections of miles don't happen just between alliance members, though. Often, airlines outside alliances partner up with one another. You can for example transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to Emirates' Skywards program, and use the resulting miles to book a flight on JetBlue.

So, here's a list of what airlines are in which alliances. You'll notice that each one of the big three U.S. legacy carriers was a founding member of each one, and Oneworld is the only alliance with two U.S. carriers, having welcomed Alaska Airlines on March 31, 2021.

Star Alliance

The first airline alliance was founded on May 14, 1997, when Air Canada, Lufthansa, SAS, Thai Airways and United Airlines came together in a globe-spanning partnership. From its first day, Star served every inhabited continent, in a clear illustration of why alliances exist: You can travel pretty much everywhere on alliance carriers. Wherever you're based, if you are a frequent flyer there's an alliance with a value proposition for you based on the perks of loyalty and seamless connections.

Star has since grown to 26 members, flying 727 million passengers . It's the biggest alliance by most metrics. It's also the only one with at least one full member from every inhabited continent. Members include:

  • Aegean Airlines
  • Air New Zealand
  • All Nippon Airways (ANA)
  • Austrian Airlines
  • Brussels Airlines
  • Copa Airlines
  • Croatia Airlines
  • Ethiopian Airlines
  • LOT Polish Airlines
  • Scandinavian Airlines (SAS)
  • Shenzhen Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • South African Airways
  • Swiss Airlines
  • TAP Portugal
  • Thai Airways
  • Turkish Airlines
  • United Airlines

Like in the other two alliances, Star members paint one or more of their planes in special alliance colors. It's become a tradition for alliance airlines, and those planes make coveted targets for aviation geeks with cameras, who collect images of as many special-color planes as possible.

The newest alliance, founded in 2000 by Aeromexico, Air France, Delta Air Lines and Korean Air, has since grown to be the second largest by airline members and people carried on its planes.

Its 19 members, based on all continents except Australia, fly 630 million passengers a year . Airlines include:

  • Aerolíneas Argentinas
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • Czech Airlines
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Kenya Airways
  • Vietnam Airlines

Like in the other alliances, its members paint some planes in alliance colors — but with a silver fuselage.

airline group travel

The second alliance to be formed — in 1998, by American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas — is the smallest, with 14 carriers and 535 million passengers in 2018 .

This year, it grew to 14 members and become the only alliance with two members in the U.S., the biggest aviation market in the world, with the entrance of Alaska. The fifth-largest airline in the country carried nearly 47 million people in 2019, so its addition will represent a significant jump in passenger numbers for the alliance.

Oneworld members include:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Japan Airlines
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Royal Air Maroc
  • Royal Jordanian
  • S7 Airlines

Oneworld members also paint some planes in alliance colors, but unlike Star and SkyTeam, there's no alliance logo on the tail.

5 instances airline miles aren't worth your money, but travel credit cards prove useful instead

Airline miles have always been considered the most valuable award travel currency

Airline Miles Travel Rewards Points

Dubai: Let’s say you signed up for an airline credit card and met the minimum spending requirement to earn a certain amount of miles. The next obvious step would then be to start searching for the flight you want, now that your miles safely stored away in your account.

While airline miles are widely considered the most valuable award travel currency and is most often far more useful and cost-effective for first-class tickets, the reality is even with the potentially high valuations or benefits, miles are not always worth earning.

“Anyone who has long been a player in the frequent flyer game will tell you that earning miles is the easy part,” said Dubai-based travel agent and itinerary consultant Richa Dev. “No matter how many airline miles are accrued, limited availability can make it difficult to redeem miles in the way you want.”

So if you may want to go to a country overseas, you can only use your miles to go there if you find award availability on dates you can actually travel. If not, well, you may wind up redeeming your miles for something other than airfare — or letting them languish in your account until they expire.

While there may be several other reasons why you may want to think twice about earning airline miles, here are five signs airline miles may not even be worth your time, energy and most importantly – your money.

1. If available flight tickets are already low-priced, with less demand for them

“Before you sign up for a travel credit card to rack up frequent flyer miles, it's always worth checking the current price of the airfare you hope to book one day,” said Sophia Sanchez, travel planning manager at a UAE-based European tour operator.

“You may be surprised at just how affordable travel can be to certain destinations around the globe. And if you don't check, you might waste your time and money earning airline miles to get there.”

So in other words, if the flight to the destination you want isn't too pricey, it can make more sense to save up the cash instead of dealing with airline programs and limited award availability. Even better, you can sign up for a card with travel credit and then use points to cover the cost of any flight you book.

2. If your dates are flexible and you can afford to wait for a sale or any offer

“Even if your destination isn't always cheap to get to, you could still wait for a discounted sale. This is especially true if your dates are flexible, or you can book at the last minute since the best deals typically go to those who can travel any time or without much notice,” said Dev.

If you have some flexibility, Dev suggested signing up for a travel rewards card that will let you redeem points however you want, and then wait for a sale. And you don't have to do it on your own. There are now plenty of websites great for finding sales abroad, so make sure to check them regularly.

“You can also follow both on social media and sign up for notifications for sales from your home airport. If you can wait it out, you may be able to find round-trip flights to destinations around the globe for Dh2,000 or less,” added Dev.

3. You need to book tickets for your entire family or a group of relatives

Another reason airline miles may not be ideal is when you need to book airfare for several people at once. This is because it’s a fact that many airlines limit award seats for individual flights, which means that you may not be able to find more than one or two seats that are bookable with miles at one time.

Sanchez suggested that you may be able to get around this by opting to pursue airline miles with a program that doesn't limit award availability. However, even this strategy has its limitations, since all airlines may not fly where you want to go.

“While airline miles can be lucrative even if you have a big family, from my experience, you will likely need to have a plan for your miles and book extremely early if you want to score several seats on the same flight,” said Sanchez.

“If you're not an early planner, you may be better off pursuing flexible travel credit, and watching for prices to drop so you can take advantage when the right opportunity comes along.”

Your flight-booking conspiracy theories, debunked

4. You need to book on specific dates at specific times

Another time you may want to skip airline miles is if you have to book a specific flight at a specific time. This is often the case if you're traveling for a wedding or a work event, or if you have exactly seven days of vacation approved and have to plan your trip during that time frame.

“Since frequent flyer programs are often restrictive and may only offer award seats on certain days, you can be left out in the cold if you need to travel on a very specific timeline. In this case, you would be better off pursuing flexible travel credit so you can book the flight you want,” added Dev.

“As an alternative, you can also consider flexible travel credit cards that let you transfer points to airlines. With this strategy, you could earn a big sign-up bonus and start racking up points then decide later whether transferring to an airline is feasible.”

5. You're not sure of your travel plans or when you can travel

Airline miles are rarely useful for consumers who want to travel but aren't sure they can. If you earn a ton of airline miles and don't find any time to use them, you could end up wasting them or redeeming them in a less than optimal way (e.g. for gift cards or merchandise at a much lower rate).

Both Dev and Sanchez agreed that it is worth considering travel credit cards that offer several options when it comes to redeeming points, particularly if you're unsure you can travel enough to use up the miles you earn.

“Look for a card that lets you book travel direct, transfer points to hotel and airline partners, or redeem for gift cards or cash-back. With all of those options available, you'll be able to use your points whether you travel or not,” added Sanchez.

Irish Ryanair passengers furious after airline reschedules flights to give them just 25 minutes at destination

The group of pals have been left scrambling to find alternative travel arrangements after the low-cost airline rescheduled their flights

A Cork group's travel plans have turned into a nightmare after Ryanair changed their flight times, leaving them with a mere 25 minutes to spend in Cologne.

The friends had arranged to jet off from Dublin Airport to the German city for the renowned Carnival, departing on Sunday, November 10 and returning on Wednesday, November 13. However, they were gobsmacked when the budget airline rescheduled their flights to leave Dublin at 6.25am and return from Cologne at 9.40am on Monday, November 11, reports Dublin Live .

The new schedule means the group would land in Cologne at 9.15am, giving them only 25 minutes before they would have to fly back. One of the holidaymakers expressed his disbelief to Dublin Live, saying: "When I saw the email I honestly couldn't believe it, there's absolutely no point even offering a pair of flights that would give us 25 minutes in Germany. We're travelling up from Cork to catch the flights and we'd spend longer in the car than we would on our holiday."

He added: "With the time we'd be waiting to get through security and back I don't think we could make the return flight even if we tried. It's impossible, I don't get how an automated system would allow for this."

The passenger also shared their frustration about the long-anticipated trip, noting: "We've had this trip planned for a while now and we were meant to fly out on the Sunday and come back on Wednesday. We're heading over for the Cologne Carnival on November 11 and that's one of the city's busiest times for tourists."

In a dash for alternatives after Ryanair changed their flights, the group claim they've been left high and dry with unsuitable flight options.

"Some of the group of us going have had to book off their holidays months in advance and they won't be able to get more time off, never mind getting an extra night's accommodation in Cologne during Carnival season," one of the passengers revealed.

"We got the news this morning and now we're scrambling to find another way to get to Germany for the dates we have our accommodation booked. Right now it looks like we'll be either paying hundreds of euros for direct flights to other nearby airports or we'll have to fly out of London and wait 10 hours for a connecting flight on the day we fly back, it's a disaster."

Reacting to the fiasco, a Ryanair spokesperson clarified the situation when speaking to Dublin Live: "This customer booked a return flight from Dublin to Cologne for travel on 10 Nov, returning 13 Nov. This flight was scheduled to depart at 13:10 on 10 Nov but was subsequently rescheduled to a 06:25 departure the next day, 11 Nov.

"The return flight on 13 Nov was also rescheduled to 11 Nov at 09:40. This customer was notified of the flight changes by email (3 Sep) and advised of their options to either accept the flight time change, change the flight free of charge to the next available flight, or to receive a full refund.

"Ryanair sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused as a result of these schedule adjustments. To date, this passenger has not selected any of the provided options."

Austin to travel this week to Ramstein Air Base to discuss more military support for Ukraine

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is traveling to Ramstein Air Base in Germany to meet Friday with allies and discuss further military support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, according to the Pentagon.

Austin and Air Force Gen. Charles “CQ” Brown, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will participate in the 24th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which consists of nearly 50 countries that have banded together to provide military assistance to the Ukrainian forces battling Russia’s invasion since February 2022.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy repeated his appeal to Western allies on Tuesday looking for longer-range munitions and asking nations to ease restrictions on what Ukraine can target on Russian soil with the weapons provided.

“Granting Ukraine these approvals and providing us with this weaponry would be the biggest step toward a real, just end to this war,” Zelenskyy said on X.

The request comes after two Russian ballistic missiles blasted a military training facility and nearby hospital Tuesday in the central-eastern Ukrainian city of Poltava, killing at least 50 people and wounding more than 200 others, The Associated Press reported.

The U.S. made a policy change in May that allows Ukrainian commanders to fire American weapons into Russia for the limited purpose of defending the northeastern city of Kharkiv.

“I’ve made it clear … what we support and don’t support,” President Joe Biden said about lifting weapons restrictions.

Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon’s top spokesman, told reporters that he did not have any policy changes to announce.

Meetings of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group are often followed by new announcements of more military aid. The U.S. has provided more than $55.5 billion to Ukraine since the invasion, according to the State Department.

Gospel group The Nelons’ frightening final moments before deadly plane crash revealed in new report

A preliminary report revealed the final moments of the July 26 plane crash that left members of gospel group The Nelons dead .

The National Transportation Safety Board released the report on Aug. 28, nearly a month after the fatal crash took the lives of six plane passengers and the pilot. Three of the deceased were members of the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame quartet.

The report revealed the pilot declared an emergency after the loss of autopilot and told the Salt Lake City Air Route Traffic Control Center controller he was trying to regain control of the aircraft. Witnesses also described the moments before and after the crash.

"One witness located near the accident site heard a ‘loud whining noise’ that diminished and then increased followed shortly thereafter by smoke emanating from the area of the accident site," the report read. "Another witness observed the airplane overhead in a ‘barrel roll’ maneuver and heard the airplane’s engine ‘roaring loud’ until they heard the airplane impact terrain. The witness stated that they saw the smoke in the area shortly after."

"Thank you for the prayers that have been extended already to me, my husband, Jamie, and our soon-to-be-born baby boy, as well as Jason’s parents, Dan and Linda Clark," she said at the time. "We appreciate your continued prayers, love and support as we navigate the coming days."

Amber's husband Nathan Kistler, their assistant Melodi Hodges, the pilot Larry Haynie, and his wife Melissa were also killed in the crash, according to Nelon Streetman.

Prior to the single-engine Pilatus PC-12/47E turboprop airplane crashing , Dr. Alan Diehl, a former NTSB, FAA and U.S. Air Force Crash Investigator, Aviation Psychologist and author of, "Requiem for Camelot," described to Fox News Digital what the passengers on the fatal flight may have experienced.

"Dark terror. That's what you usually hear in my novel when I talk about [John F. Kennedy Jr.] falling from the sky," Diehl shared. "I said it was all over, but the screaming, and that's based on, you know, he didn't have a voice recorder on his airplane, but I'm sure that he and his two passengers were just in terror as the plane was falling out of the sky, much like this one."

"But of course, in this case, you know the actual breakup, we don't know — the plane may have lost pressurization. And in a way… if the breakup occurred early enough, and they lost pressurization, they may have actually been unconscious or semi-conscious at the last minute or so. And that would be merciful. They would say that was God's mercy."

A group of holidaymakers are facing travel "disaster" after Ryanair rescheduled their flights leaving them with just 25 minutes in their destination.

The pals from Cork had booked to fly out from Dublin Airport to Cologne on Sunday, November 10 and return on Wednesday, November 13. The group are planning to head to the German city for its famed Carnival but were stunned when the low cost airline rescheduled the flights with departure from Dublin at 6:25am on Monday, November 11 and returning the same day at 9:40am.

The departing flight only lands in Cologne at 9:15am, leaving the group just 25 minutes in the city before their return flight. One of the passengers told Dublin Live he couldn't believe his eyes when he saw what was being offered.

Ryanair has offered the passengers the option of a refund or the opportunity to book alternative flights. However none of the flights are suitable for the group and they are now frantically scrambling to find alternative ways to travel for their city break.

“Some of the group of us going have had to book off their holidays months in advance and they won’t be able to get more time off, never mind getting an extra night’s accommodation in Cologne during Carnival season," the passenger told us.
