Al Lubel has one of the funniest jokes I have ever heard

-jerry seinfeld, "al lubel is mentally al - his performance is like an elongated beat poem", -julian hall, the independent, "a terrifically funny comedian", -david letterman, upcoming shows.

Al Lubel became a lawyer to please his mother and a year later became a standup comedian in order to displease her.

Getting stage time is hard for a new comic so Al, unannounced, would suddenly stand up in the middle of restaurants while people were in the middle of eating dinner and do his five minutes. As Al says, “And I almost always got big laughs because, looking back on it, I think they were scared that I was insane.”

Al began getting work at comedy clubs and within a year won the $100,000 Comedy Grand Prize on television’s Star Search. Doing the Tonight Show was a childhood fantasy so he auditioned and luckily became one of the last comics to appear with Johnny Carson. He then went on to make a bunch of appearances on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Late Show with David Letterman.

In 1992, Al was the subject of A Standup Life, directed by Peter Lydon for the BBC.  A documentary about American standup comedy, it features Jerry Seinfeld, Bob Hope, Mort Sahl and Joan Rivers.

In 1990, Al played an attorney on the Blake Clark HBO Comedy Hour and in 2002 played basketball superstar Bill Walton’s sidekick in the the ESPN series, Bill Walton’s Long Strange Trip.

Al’s solo show, Mentally Al, won the Amused Moose Award Judges Prize as the best one person show in the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Two years later he was nominated for best performer of a one person show by the Barry Awards at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2016, Al was Marc Maron’s guest on WTF and a year later moved to London where he did standup for three years in the UK and Europe.

A new documentary about Al directed by Joshua Edelman, Mentally Al, is being distributed by Comedy Dynamics and can be seen on Amazon Prime and YouTube.

But Al does admit to missing the practice of law. “I’d like to have just one more trial, something serious like a murder trial because right before I give closing argument and my client’s fate hinges on every word I say I want to see his face when I turn to him and whisper, I’m a comedian!”

Having been a standup comedian for 17 years, it is not uncommon for other comedians to ask me if I am related to Al Lubel, since my last name is Lobell. As far as I know, we are not related (aside from the fact that we are both Jewish), but I do have a strong connection to him.

Lubel was the first comic I ever saw perform in a comedy club. I kept looking for more comedians like him, because he was so funny. There were none. His jokes were just so much smarter than everyone else’s.

Finally, the world is going to learn how much of a comedy genius Lubel is; he’s the star of a new documentary, “Mentally Al,” which follows him on his gigs, shows a glimpse into his personal life – like visiting his elderly mother in a nursing home in Florida – and features interviews with his contemporaries like Sarah Silverman, Judd Apatow, Kevin Nealon and Andy Kindler. Silverman talked about how Lubel was the first alternative comedian before alt comedy even existed.

The movie is directed by Joshua Edelman, and produced by Edelman and Daniel Marino (who is, fun fact, Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino’s son). It’s being distributed by Comedy Dynamics and is available on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Comcast, Spectrum, Apple TV and Google Play.

Despite the respect of his peers and his many career accomplishments, the whole theme of the documentary, Lubel said, is, ‘Why is this very funny guy not more successful?’

Despite the respect of his peers and his many career accomplishments, the whole theme of the documentary, Lubel said, is, “Why is this very funny guy not more successful?”

A former lawyer, Lubel never became famous, despite his winning a $100,000 grand prize for “Star Search,” and then going on to do sets on late night shows.

In the film, Lubel recounts a fellow comedian asking him a question that he found hurtful: “If you could do it all over again, would you still do comedy?”

Lubel explained that the question implied that he is a failure because this comedian wouldn’t ask that to Jerry Seinfeld. Though he is not a financial success, he said he does not see himself as a failure. He got to stop being a lawyer to do comedy. Every day that he’s a comedian and not a lawyer, he says he is a success.

Lubel is a sharp joke writer. One of my favorites goes something like this: “I don’t vote because I don’t think my vote counts. My friend said, ‘Al, what if everyone didn’t vote because they thought their vote didn’t count?’ Well, then my vote would count.” It’s a circular logic that he often uses.

One thing I love about the film is that it really makes you think. But then again, you’d be thinking without the movie. So to be more accurate, it’s the kind of movie that really makes you think about Al Lubel. And if there is one thing Al Lubel loves, it’s people thinking about Al Lubel.

As he says in the movie, his audience is people who don’t know about him. If they did, they would love him and come see him, but in a given crowd, there are often only some that love him but they are usually only just finding out about him then.

The comic, who is endlessly self-deprecating, can’t resist relating this story to me: “The director’s ex-girlfriend is a psychologist and she watched [the film] twice. She said ‘Al really intellectualizes everything.’ And I think that’s true. That’s a way of putting it. I didn’t like hearing it actually because it explains me and I think I am unexplainable. Is that all I was doing is intellectualizing? I thought I was more interesting than that.”

He continued, “I analyze everything to death and then don’t do everything. And that’s my excuse for not doing anything. Doing nothing is something, but at least it’s easier.”

Daniel Lobell is a comedian and podcaster living in Los Angeles. He is the author of the Fair Enough comic book series  and hosts the Doctorpedia podcast .

Al Lubel 's 2024 biography

Al lubel’s background.

Al is supported Jerry Seinfeld, who kindly mentioned “Al has one of the best jokes I have ever heard” and recently fellow comic Adam Bloom gave him high praise by saying Al had “the most original first ten minutes of comedy I’ve ever seen.”

Al Lubel became a lawyer to satisfy his mother. He then quit the law and became a stand-up  comedian  to satisfy his need to disappoint her. Al practiced law during the day and comedy at night. Getting stage time is hard for a new comic so Al would suddenly stand up in the middle of restaurants and do his act. And as he says, “I almost always got big laughs because I had everyone’s complete attention because everyone was scared that I might hurt them.” Al gradually began getting work at comedy clubs and within a year he won the $100,000 Comedy Grand Prize on television’s Star Search.

Doing the Tonight Show was a childhood fantasy, so Al auditioned and became one of the last comics to appear with Johnny Carson. He went on to make six more appearances with Jay Leno and five appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman. Al was the subject of the documentary, A Standup Life, directed by Peter Lydon for the BBC. A documentary about American stand-up comedy, it features Jerry Seinfeld, Bob Hope, Mort Sahl and Joan Rivers. Al has played an attorney on the Blake Clark HBO Comedy Hour. He has also played played Bill Walton’s sidekick in the the ESPN series, Bill Walton’s Long Strange Trip.

Al’s solo show, Mentally Al, won the Amused Moose Award Judges Prize as the best one person show in the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Two years later he was nominated for best performer of a solo show by the Barry Awards at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

But Al does admit to missing the practice of law. He says, “I’d like to have just one more trial, something serious like a murder trial because right before I give my closing argument and my client’s fate hinges on every word I say I want to see his face when I turn to him and whisper, I’m a comedian!”

The detroit free press, the detroit jewish news, nu detroit.

Wow, what a night!

Lives Well Lived: Wrinkles in Time is in the rearview mirror, but it left a warm afterglow (along with a bunch of leftover cookies.)

But nobody really came for the cookies. They came for the camaraderie, for the entertainment, and for the feel-good evening everyone needed in these challenging times. One attendee said “each moment of the pre-glow was filled with love being spread around the room.” She went on to say, “There were so many hugs and kisses, it will be a miracle if no one gets a cold after last night!”

Good lord, I sure hope we didn’t have the super spreader event of the season!

But more importantly, she said to tell everyone “how much we appreciate them for giving us such dignity as we get older and older.”

And that’s what Lives Well Lived and JSL are all about – warmth, love, fun, outstanding experiences, and dignity for our older adults (and cookies).

In addition to the bon homie of the pre-glow, event highlights included:

Great films – Wendy’s Shabbat, Death Metal Grandma, and Young at Heart, which won an Oscar in 1987, and the intervening three decades have proved it absolutely timeless.

A lovely tribute to Sue Marx by Jack Lessenberry and Bill Haney – Filmmaker, Detroiter and portrayer of older adulthood as a time when life and living continue, albeit at a slightly slower pace.

Recognition of the sponsors who make it possible for JSL to be a place where older adults have access to a wide range of arts, education, and entertainment activities, where people don’t just live, but thrive at any age.

The highlight for me was handing the copies of “Don’t Write Me Off!” to the writers, editors and sponsors, and watching the writers sign each other’s books. This project was a passion project for me and a labor of love for everyone who was involved, and it was the culmination of five months of hard work (and fun!). So it was a complete delight to see people finally get to experience this amazing collection.

Copies of “Don’t Write Me Off!” are available in our boutiques and on our website – they make great holiday gifts!

For the past 60 years, FSP has worked on hundreds of projects with dozens of non-profit and religious organizations – many of which serve Southeast Michigan and surrounding areas – to make visions become reality.

Principals James Pappas and Robert Shaffer, along with partners Joseph Loskill, Scott Kelley, and Daniel Haezebrouck, have been proud to be involved with developments that have meaningful, large-scale impacts on communities and organizations.

Whether it was helping a religious organization with a community center or assisting a Detroit non-profit to offer housing options for displaced residents, FSP’s work has always demonstrated the firm’s core values.

“It means a lot to us to make a difference in the lives of people in our communities,” Pappas said. “Everyone at Fusco, Shaffer & Pappas realizes the importance of their work, and that it’s more than just architecture – it’s creating environments for life and changing circumstances for residents. That’s what really matters to us.”

Now in our 60 th year, FSP remains committed to abiding by the principles that served as the foundation of the firm back in the early 1960s. We started in Ferndale, moved to Southfield, then to Farmington Hills, and now reside again in Ferndale. We’ve always been close to Detroit and will remain connected to the city and its surrounding communities for many decades to come.

FSP is proud to support the Friends of Jewish Senior Life and its ‘2023 FRIENDS of JSL Lives Well Lived’ campaign. Providing quality, affordable senior housing has always been a priority – and we couldn’t be happier to know that our support will help improve and update the Fleischman Residence/Blumberg Plaza, which has served as a cornerstone for area seniors for 40 years. We recognize the importance of a legacy, and the new enhancements will certainly pave the way for many more years of great services for JSL seniors.

Fusco, Shaffer & Pappas, Inc., is an award-winning, full-service architecture firm most notably recognized for our unique environments for life since 1963. Our extensive experience includes residential communities, specialized communities and continuing care retirement communities. With more than 60 years of history, our design innovation and problem-solving skills equip us with the capability to deliver an exceptional project to every client.

Fusco, Shaffer & Pappas, Inc., values honesty, integrity and responsibility. The success of our projects is dependent on a critical component of what we provide – service. Service to our clients, service to the future resident and service to the community. We are committed to designing buildings which exceed client expectations, along with environments that contribute to the overall well-being of the community.
