Milan Transport Tickets and Travel Cards

Milan Transport Tickets and Travel Cards

One-way tickets, 24 or 72-hour passes, weekly travel cards... discover all the types of ticket and transport cards available in Milan .

All the tickets and travel cards are valid for all of Milan’s means of transport: urban buses , trams , Milan Metro and urban trains.

You can purchase the transport tickets in the various metro stations, in the off-licenses and in any of Milan’s parking meters. From 2020 you'll have to load tickets onto an electronic card, RicaricaMi, of personal use.

Public transport in Milan is free for kids under 14 years of age.

Most useful tickets for tourists

Single ticket.

The single ticket is valid for zones Mi1, Mi2 and Mi3 and can be used for 90 minutes from its validation, making multiple trips on surface transport and also on the metro by entering, exiting and passing through the turnstiles. The price is € 2.20 ( US$ 2.50).

24-hour travel card

This unlimited use pass is valid for 24 hours after its validation, that is, if you validate it one day at 12:30 you can use the transport until the next day at the same time. It is valid for zones Mi1, Mi2 and Mi3 and its price is € 7.60 ( US$ 8.50).

72-hour travel card

The three-day travel card permits unlimited travel and is valid for 72   hours since it's first validated, costing € 15.50 ( US$ 17.30).

Ticket for your luggage

You'll sometimes have to buy a separate ticket for your luggage, depending on its size, and note that if you have more than one suitcase, you might not be allowed to get on the metro, tram, or bus.

The suitcases which can be carried onboard are very similar to the dimensions of the ones allowed on an airplane. The small ones (50 centimeters) are allowed on for free and the larger ones (50 x 90 centimeters) must have their own Luggage ticket. Suitcases over 90 cm are not allowed on Milan’s public transport, so you might want to think about taking another means of transport because you could be fined if your luggage is too large.

Other tickets and travel cards

10 standard tickets.

The price of the 10-ticket card is € 19.50 ( US$ 21.80) , offering a small saving compared to buying it separately. This ticket is non-transferable, it cannot be used at the same time by several people. Each ticket is valid for 90 minutes from the first validation.

Weekly 2x6 ticket

This travel card is not very useful for visitors. It allows you to travel twice a day for 6 days during the same week for € 8.40 ( US$ 9.40).

Evening ticket

This ticket gives you unlimited access from 8 pm until the end of the service . The price of the ticket costs € 3 ( US$ 3.40).

Special tickets for the Fiera Milano (Rho Fiera)

A ticket to the Fiera Milano on Milan Metro’s line 1 costs € 2.55 ( US$ 2.90) per journey. This ticket will allow you to change lines and take other means of transport for 105 minutes after first validating it.

Travel Cards

As well as the already mentioned tickets, Milan’s public transport system also has weekly, monthly, and annual travel cards. These cards are not so useful for tourists unless you're planning on staying in Milan for over a week, as the card itself costs € 10 ( US$ 11.20).

Where can the ticket be bought?

Milan public transport tickets can be purchased at metro machines, tobacconists and kiosks. There is also an SMS purchase system, but it is not cost-effective unless you have an Italian cell phone.

How to Use the Milan Metro: Quick & Easy Guide for First-Timers

How to Use the Milan Metro: Quick & Easy Guide for First-Timers

Last updated on March 12th, 2024 at 03:57 am

From the Duomo di Milano to the quirky neighborhood of Navigli, or cosmopolitan Piazza Gae Aulenti to a soccer game at San Siro, the metro in Milan is one of the most convenient ways to get around. But, it can easily be confusing to navigate a city entirely new to you, plus making sure you use your time to the fullest. That’s why this quick & easy guide to using the Milan Metro will have you riding the subway like a true Milanese as soon as you arrive.

Whether you’re traveling to Milan for the first time or on a budget, or you’re a new expat in Italy trying to get the hang of local life, this guide is designed to make you as prepared as possible so you’re as confident as can be on the metro in Milan.

About The Milan Metro System

atm travel card milan

The Metropolitana, or metro, which is the underground subway of Milan, is operated by the Azienda Trasporti Milanesi . The company operates all Milan public transport in and around the city.

There are five Milan metro lines, all color-coded:

  • M1 Red line : From Sesto San Giovanni to Bisceglie and Rho Fieramilano (the line splits.) Major stops include Duomo and Cadorna FN.
  • M2 Green line : From Gessate and Cologno Nord to Assago Milanofiori Forum and Abbiategrasso. Major stops include Lambrate FS (train station), Centrale FS (main train station), Garibaldi FS (train station), Porta Genova (Navigli area).
  • M3 Yellow line : From Comasina to San Donato. Major stops include Centrale FS and Duomo.
  • M4 Blue line – New! : This new metro line connects Milan Linate Airport to the city center.
  • M5 Lilac line : From Bignami to San Siro Stadio. Major stops include San Siro Stadium and Garibaldi FS.

Good to know : Note that some lines split to take you in different directions , like the M1. You have to pay attention not only that you’re taking the tram going towards the right place but that you’re taking the right split.

At its core, the Milan Metro is not a complicated transportation system. But when you’re standing at the station in person, squinting to find your stop on the map, taking a turn down the wrong corridor, you’re wishing you had read up on the fundamentals of the metro system!

Pro Tip: Check the metro status of any of the five lines on the ATM official website .

Why You Should Use the Metro in Milan

I love to acknowledge and spread the word about walkable cities that are easy to explore and get the most out of on foot. Milan however is no such city.

Milan is huge – and it’s made up of a bunch of unique neighborhoods you would never come across unless you tired yourself out walking for hours on end.

It is also one of the cheapest ways to get around the city, perfect for budget travelers.

It’s Convenient & Fast

The metro is one of the most convenient ways to get around Milan because it is quick and efficient. Since it’s underground, it constantly keeps moving. There are no people, other vehicles, or intersections interrupting or delaying the system.

This is why the metro is ideal if you only have one day in Milan to explore and are trying to see as much of the city as possible on your busy northern Italy itinerary .

It’s Budget-Friendly

Starting at €2.20 for a one-way ticket, the metro is one of the cheapest ways to get around the city. It can be the perfect compromise for budget-friendly travelers trying to see a lot while saving money.

Good to know: You can also use your ticket on the more aesthetic (but not as fast) transportation, trams. Some trams are classic trolley cars which make them a cute way to get around, just not as convenient.

You Get a Glimpse at Local Life

Tourists are less likely to take the metro just because of how confusing and intimidating it can be. This means you’ll mostly be traveling alongside residents, which offers some fun (and interesting) insight into the Milanese way of life.

Keep in mind the city is one of the most multicultural in Italy, so you’ll also see hear many languages and see many foreigners that call Milan home.

Increases Your Confidence as a Traveler

This may be the most metaphorical and figurative reason to use the subway in Milan but it’s still important. Getting to know and successfully getting around a new city using the subway is a challenge!

So if you manage to do it, you gain confidence as a traveler, especially while traveling solo.

Metro Stations

atm travel card milan

Milan Metro stations are dotted all throughout the city. While the sign is large, the chaos and bustle of the metropolis can lead you to miss it!

When looking for a metro station, look for a tall sign with a bold red M on it . It is located next to stairs or, sometimes, escalators that lead you to the underground transportation.

Once you understand which line you have to take, you’ll understand which station you need to enter. There are overhead signs as you descend the stairs or escalator that indicate which lines service that station.

I wouldn’t say anyone’s traveling on the subway for the amenities, but I want you to leave this post knowing everything there is to know about the subway that could be of use to you.

As far as amenities go, nearly all stations have vending machines with food and drink. Many stations also have an “edicola” (newspaper stand) that sells newspapers, magazines and items like small snacks and water.

I haven’t been in every single subway station, but I have never seen a restroom facility. However, I discovered that many stations do in fact have bathrooms. They are not indicated on the maps you’ll find in the metro (which is why I didn’t know they existed), but you can find all the stations with a bathroom on this map .

Accessibility

Milan’s metro stations that are accessible for those traveling with wheelchairs or handicaps are indicated on the metro map by a blue handicap symbol or a white handicap symbol .

The blue symbol means there are elevators in the station, whereas the white symbol indicates that the station has stairlifts for those traveling in a wheelchair.

Read more about accessibility on the metro .

Buying a Milan Metro Ticket

There are several types of tickets for the metro in Milan, and important things to know about using them.

Where to Buy Tickets

atm travel card milan

  • The machines are also convenient because you can input what language settings you prefer for the transaction process.
  • I honestly wouldn’t recommend purchasing tickets on the app because it’s just not as simple and easy as buying them directly at the station. What is nice is that the app provides a timer so you know exactly when your ticket is about to expire.
  • At bars, tabaccherie, and newspaper stands – If you prefer to buy the ticket from a person, most newspaper stands (edicola) and tobacco shops (tabaccheria) sell Milan public transport tickets. However, note that these places usually only take cash.
  • More convenient than paying on the app but still not as simple as buying tickets at the ticket machines.
  • Good to know: The time frame of the ticket’s validity starts at the time of purchase with this method, not at the time you scan it on the turnstile.
  • You can print tickets purchased via SMS at the ticket machines in the station.
  • Pay contactless (New!) – You can now go right up to the turnstiles and tap your credit or debit card on the reader to start your journey. Just tap the same card on the exit turnstiles to have a completely contactless metro ride. You can also use Apple Pay and similar services as long as it is attached to a card. Find out more info .

Pro Tip: Even though paying at the ticket machines is my recommended method for buying your tickets, it is not uncommon that machines are out of order . That’s why it is good to know of these other options for purchasing your metro ticket.

Types of Milan Metro Tickets

atm travel card milan

Here are the most common types of tickets available you’ll be using:

  • Single-use ticket : Valid for 90 minutes, meaning you can take as many rides as you want 90 minutes from stamping your ticket at the turnstiles. Costs €2.20 euros. For this ticket, you would select Ordinary 3 zones on the screen, as you see in the photo above.
  • Daily ticket : Unlimited rides on the metro, valid for 24 hours from the time it is first stamped.
  • 3 day ticket : Unlimited rides on the metro, valid for 72 hours from the time it is first stamped.
  • Book of 10 Tickets : Also called a Carnet 10 corsi, it is ticket that allows you 10 rides on the metro.
  • Milan City Pass : Also called the Milano Card, it is ideal for tourists who will frequently use public transportation. The travel card gives you unlimited access to all Milan transport for either 1, 2, or 3 days, as well as benefits like discounted rates on attractions restaurants and more. It’s also convenient because you can buy the Milano Card online . I encourage you, however, to do your own research to decide if this is the option for you, as others have expressed concerns about the value of the card.

Under other ATM tickets, you’ll find options for traveling to the outskirts of Milan. The symbols Mi1-Mi3 represent the innermost zones of the city.

The other options on the screen include io Viaggio Lombardia, which is a pass to use all public transportation throughout the region of Lombardy. Ticket for San Raffaele H means the ticket to reach the San Raffaele Hospital.

Pro Tip: Children up to 10 years old don’t need a ticket to ride the subway in Milan.

atm travel card milan

Pro Tip: Your Milan metro ticket can be used on trams, buses, and the city’s characteristic trolley cars too!

Navigating the Platforms & Subway Lines

Turnstiles at Milan Metro station.

The Milan subway may only have a few lines but you can still easily be overwhelmed when entering a station, especially if it is busy.

Good to know: There are stickers on the ground and signs above that have the line and symbol (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5) to help you know where you’re going.

To get down to the platforms, you will have to get past a set of turnstiles. Here you will insert and validate your ticket.

It will then be stamped with a time, which is the time you will reference for how long your ticket is valid for (90 minutes for single ticket, 24 hours for travel pass, etc.)

When you make your way down to the platform, it is not only important to double check you are going to the right line but also to the train moving in the right direction.

For example, the M3 line has subways that go north and subways that go south. All you have to do is locate on the map next to the stairs (before descending to the platform) if your stop is highlighted on the map. If it is not highlighted in the line’s color, that means you have to go to the other platform which is traveling in that direction.

The platforms can either be right across from each other or separated by the tracks.

Helpful Resources

Pro Tip: ATM at the Milan subway does not mean an ATM where you can withdraw money. It stands for the operating company’s name – Azienda Trasporti Milanesi!

ATM Points are info points where you can carry out a variety of tasks: get information, buy tickets or yearly passes, subscribe to BikeMi, Milan’s bike sharing service, etc. You’ll most likely use them to get more information and get directions in case you’ve ended up in the wrong spot.

ATM points are located in the following stations:

  • Duomo (M1 and M3)
  • Cadorna FN (M1 and M2)
  • Centrale FS (M2 and M3, Milan’s main train station)
  • Loreto (M1 and M2)
  • Garibaldi FS (M2 and M5)
  • Romolo (M2)

Another resource you can take advantage of is the ATM app, which can provide timely information like planned maintenance.

Entering, Exiting, and On the Metro

atm travel card milan

A subway arrives typically every 2-8 minutes depending on the time of day. You can see exactly when it’s arriving once you’re on the platform. There are screens overhead that indicate how many minutes remain before the next subway arrives.

The interior of the metro is well-kept and you can sit or stand while holding onto the poles. It’s generally a smooth (but fast) ride, however, I still recommend holding onto something if you’re standing.

Once you’re on the metro, the systems make it very easy to know what stops are coming up next. Above the doors is typically a map of the stops on the metro line you can use for reference.

On newer metro trains, there are actually TVs that show you what the next stop is. And on top of that, a speaker calls out each stop in Italian and English – all you have to do is pay attention!

Whether you enter and exit on the right or left depends on the station , so it’s good to listen to the stop announcements to know which side you should prepare to exit from.

Pro Tip: Have a travel-sized hand sanitizer on hand. I’ve never seen hand sanitizer stands in the stations and the metro is a high contact place.

Most Popular Stops and Locations along the Milan Metro

atm travel card milan

  • Stop: Duomo (M1 & M3)
  • Stop: Centrale (M2 & M3)
  • Stop: San Siro Stadio DAZN (M5)
  • Stop: Garibaldi (M2 & M5)
  • Stop: Porta Genova (M2)
  • Stop: Cairoli (M1)

Using the Metro Beyond the City Center

Airport transfer.

Curious about using the Milan Metro as an airport transfer? It depends on which airport you are trying to reach!

The M4 metro now directly connects Milan Linate airport with the city center.

The other metro lines won’t get you all the way to Milan Malpensa, but there are several ways you can use the metro for part of your journey.

When looking at the map, you’ll want to look at any of the stops with a plane symbol next to them.

Any symbol with a bus and plane means there are airport shuttle buses near that metro stop (that go to multiple airports like Linate, Malpensa, and even Milan Bergamo Airport.)

And finally if you see a train symbol with a plane symbol, that is the Malpensa Express, a train you can take you directly to Malpensa airport.

Reach Nearby Cities

The Milan Metro also operates alongside intercity railways, a convenient transportation option for taking local day trips from Milan . The suburban railways connect you to places like Lake Como , Pavia, and Chiasso.

These railways are accessible from these metro stations: Lancetti, Porta Garibaldi, Repubblica, Porta Venezia, Dateo, Porta Vittoria.

Connect to All of Italy

Meanwhile, if you are traveling more of Italy by train , you can use the metro to get to any of the train stations in Milan. Just check your train ticket to confirm the station and then look at the metro map to locate the correct stop. All the train stations connected to the metro have a train symbol next to them.

Metro stops that are also train stations have an FS written next to their name , but some of the main train stations are:

  • Milano Centrale
  • Porta Garibaldi
  • Porta Genova

Tips for Taking the Milan Metro

  • If you can, avoid using the metro during high-traffic times , like rush hour on weekdays. Or, as a more unique example, when AC Milan or Inter, the city’s soccer teams, have a game! (Personally experienced this chaos!) The ATM operator company actually has signs to encourage people to take the subway on off-times if they can because of how high-traffic peak times get.
  • Move quickly. Stops are brief and when the metro and platforms are full of people, it is important to stay sharp and quick exiting and entering the subway. (I literally saw someone get smushed by the doors one time – as you can imagine, it looked like it hurt. Don’t let that scare you – just reminding you to stay attentive and quick!)
  • Keep your ticket on hand. As I mentioned before, you must hang onto your ticket because you’ll need it to exit the subway station. It’s best to keep it close on hand so you don’t have to rummage through your things to find the small piece of paper.

Italian Words to Know for the Metro

You are almost a Milan metro pro! Most everything is translated to English on the metro, but it will still be helpful to know some key words.

Here are some Italian words to sharpen your vocabulary and really master the metro. (Side note: Italians call the metro, metro, so you shouldn’t have any translation issues there!)

  • Biglietto – Ticket
  • Binario – Platform
  • Uscita – Exit
  • Fermata – Stop
  • Nord – North
  • Sud – South
  • Ovest – West
  • Metropolitana – Subway (the full term)
  • Stazione Ferroviaria – Train station

The SGTD Take

The Milan Metro can be an intimidating place for first-time visitors. Although a lot of it is straightforward, the overwhelm of a new city and travel worries can get the best of us and easily knock us off our travel game!

That’s why I hope this guide to using the Milan Metro has helped shed some light and prepare you for your upcoming trip.

The metro is fast and convenient, and ultimately is the easiest way to see many places in Milan even in a short period, so I highly recommend you give the underground a try to make the most of your itinerary.

What’s on your Milan bucket list? Let me know in a comment!

Italy Trip Planning Resources

  • Accommodation : For Italy, I mainly use Booking.com to search and book places to stay.
  • Booking flights : I like to search for flights through Skyscanner , but I also book direct depending on the airline.
  • Activities & experiences : For things to do that require a ticket, and for more unique trip activities, I use Musement .
  • Road trip : For renting a car, I get the best prices by comparing companies with AutoEurope . I then use ViaMichelin to estimate road trip costs and Autostrade.it to find gas stations/have live updates on traffic.
  • Transportation : Traveling by public transportation is a great way to see Italy. I use Trenitalia or Trainline to book tickets for trains and Flixbus for long-haul bus trips.
  • Accessories : I always travel with this portable charger to stay connected and with a universal adapter to accommodate Italy’s plug types.

Getting Around Milan: Guide to Public Transportation

atm travel card milan

peeterv/GettyImages

Milan, Italy has a modern public transportation system that connects almost all areas of the city, as well as its airports, via a combination of subway lines, trams and buses. The city has five main  train  stations, four Metro (subway) lines, and an extensive tram network. There's also a suburban rail system that reaches the bedroom cities of Milan. Buses also ply the city, but are most useful for connecting areas outside the city center.

Visitors to Milan intent on sightseeing will be able to get just about anywhere they need to go by way of tram or Metro. Metro is the fastest option, but many travelers prefer trams, in part because they can see where they're going on the above-ground tram cars.

How to Use Public Transit in Milan

Milan's public transportation services are run by Azienda Trasporti Milanese , or ATM for short. The ATM website has an English-language component, system maps and a route finder tool that lets you chart the best path from points A to B. ATM has an app, ATM Milano Official App , available for smartphones or Apple, that allows you to buy tickets and travel passes and access the system map.

Here are some basic how-tos for using public transportation in Milan:

  • Milan has four subway lines, called Metropolitana (Metro for short) and identified by signs with a bold "M" and the background color representing the respective lines. The four lines are Line (linea) 1, the red line, Line 2, the green line, Line 3, the yellow line and Line 5, the purple (or lilac) line. Some of the suburban rail lines crisscross the city and are shown in blue on maps.
  • Fares are determined by zone, with a simple ticket covering zones Mi1 to Mi3, the core of Milan and where virtually all attractions, shopping areas, main train stations, and tourist hotels are located.
  • As of October 2020, tickets for Metro, trams, buses and suburban rail lines within zones Mi1-Mi3 cost €2 and are good for 90 minutes, including transfers.
  • One and 3-day passes good for unlimited rides in zones Mi1-Mi3 cost €7 and €12, respectively.
  • The Milano Card travel pass, priced at €11 for 24 hours, €17 for 48 hours or €19.5 for 72 hours, includes unlimited public transportation access plus free or deeply discounted access to several major museums and attractions.
  • Tickets can be purchased in Metro stations, at tabacchi (tobacco shops) and newsstands, or via the mobile app. Note that most tabacchi and newsstand vendors will only accept cash for tickets.
  • On Metro, you need either your ticket or QR code (if you're using the mobile app) to enter and exit the train platforms. On buses and trams, you need to stamp your ticket in one of the machines when you board the vehicle.
  • The Metro system is largely accessible to wheelchair users and the physically impaired, with escalators, elevators and in some stations, stairlifts to allow passengers to reach the trains. Modern trams are wheelchair accessible though some vintage models are not. For more information, see the ATM mobility page or Accessible Milan .

Public Transportation Hours of Operation

  • Metro runs Monday to Saturday from 5.30 a.m. to 12.30 a.m. On Sundays and holidays, it opens at 6.00 a.m.
  • Trams operate from 4.30 a.m. to 2.30 a.m.
  • Buses operate from 5.30 a.m. to 1.45 a.m.
  • On Christmas Day and May 1 (Labor Day), all services run from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Getting from Milan's Airports to Central Milan

Milan's largest airport is Malpensa International, located northwest of the city. Malpensa can be reached by train using the Malpensa Express (MXP) from Centrale, Garibaldi or Cadorna stations. Tickets can be purchased online, in person at the airport or train station, or via the ATM mobile app.

Malpensa is also served by bus service to and from Milano Centrale. Malpensa Shuttle departs every 20 minutes. Shuttles also connect Malpensa to the smaller Linate Airport east of Milan.

Getting Around Milan

The majority of sights in Milan are within zones Mi1 and Mi2 and are therefore easily accessible via public transport. Here are the stops for some of Milan's most popular attractions .

  • The Castello Sforzesco is directly behind the Cairoli stop.
  • From the Porta Venezia station, one can easily visit the Museum of Science and Technology, situated in a former monastery.
  • The Conciliazione station, the first stop west of the Cadorna station, is near the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Leonardo da Vinci's ''Last Supper'' can be viewed.
  • From the Duomo stop, one can stroll not only the Duomo but through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele to La Scala opera house.
  • To reach the popular Navigli neighborhood, head to the Porta Genova or Piazza P.za Ventiquattro Maggio stops.

Getting Out of Milan

Thanks to Milan's geographic position in Northern Italy, coupled with its extensive rail system , it's a convenient point of departure for exploring neighboring countries in Europe or for reaching the rest of Italy. EuroCity trains connect from Milano Centrale to Zurich, Geneva, Bern, and other Swiss cities, and Thello trains offer direct service to Paris' Gare de Lyon station. It's also possible to catch direct trains to Monte Carlo, Monaco, and Nice, France.

Within Italy, Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains connect to Venice , Bologna , Florence , Rome and a host of other cities.

You can purchase your electronic card either online or in person at any ATM Point office.

Online purchase

Go to areariservata.atm.it , register, log in, and select   the button Nuova carta . Keep your  tax code handy.

Fill out the application form

Choose how to receive your card:

Pay by credit or debit card or PayPal.

You can buy an empty travel card, or you can already load it with a month or a one-year pass.

TIP: When making online purchases, the next calendar month becomes available for selection. For instance, if you make a purchase on November 3rd, you'll be able to select December. However, if you make a purchase after November 15th, you'll have the option to buy for January instead. Therefore, if you need to top up for the current month, it's advisable to purchase an empty card and refill it at ticket vending machines or authorized ticket resellers.

  • Read more on the ATM website
  • the application platform for your pass

When issued, the electronic card is “empty” and should be charged with your chosen travel card. You can top up your card with a monthly pass or an annual pass :

  • At automatic machines inside metro stations
  • At any tobacconist’s or newsstand that sells transportation tickets
  • Online on the ATM website or on the ATM app and then on the dedicated machine next to the metro turnstiles

To travel within the urban area of Milano (Mi1 zone) you can choose from these 4 options:

  • monthly pass for under 27: € 22 (valid for unlimited journeys during the month of validity)
  • annual pass for under 27: € 200 (valid for unlimited journeys for one year)
  • ordinary monthly pass: € 39 (valid for unlimited journeys during the month of validity)
  • ordinary annual pass: € 330 (valid for unlimited journeys for one year)

An Urban Travel Card allows you to ride across the whole ATM urban transportation network (within the borders of the city), as well as the urban portion of the S suburban railway lines (Trenord and Passante Ferroviario) departing from Cadorna, Garibaldi, Porta Venezia, and other underground stations.

Metro stations within the urban fare limits: Molino Dorino and Sesto Marelli on line M1, Cascina Gobba and Famagosta on line M2.

Towns surrounding Milano, (e.g.San Donato, Segrate, Gessate, Rozzano, Sesto San Giovanni, Corsico, Novate Milanese, Monza) are out of the urban fare: a suburban pass must be purchased depending on the number of zones travelled (from Mi1 up to Mi9 zones).

Go to ATM Fare System website  and select Zones and fares tables from the menu to see all the travel passes available (annual or monthly passes for young people under 26; weekly, monthly or annual ordinary passes).

You can always book a slot and show up at an ATM point to choose the right pass for you with the help of an operator.

At the start of your journey and every time you change the vehicle, you should tap your card on the electronic card reader at ticket barriers in the metro stations or on board of buses and trams.

The readers can also sell tickets to credit card holders: to avoid unwanted purchases, keep separate your pass from your bank cards when tapping it!

To obtain a new card please go to an ATM Point with a valid ID.

  • If your card is stolen, you should report it to the police and show the report at the ATM counters.
  • If you lose your card, you will need to fill in a lost card declaration form available at ATM Points and hand it to ATM staff.

In both cases, there is a charge of 15€ for the issue of a new card.

If you need operator assistance you can buy your pass at any ATM point office. You will need:

  • a passport-sized photo

Pick up an application form  Richiesta di rilascio tessera elettronica and fill it in with your data. Date and sign the form. Go to a counter, pay 10€, and get your card. You can ask the operator to top up the monthly or yearly fare.

Book your call number in advance through the ATM Milano app to skip the queue.

Use the app to get live updates on the transportation network status, and to grab your call number for the ATM Point counters to get your pass.

To book your call number for a new card, click on the "ATM Point" button, then choose "Ordinary services", "New card request", choose date and time slot, and confirm until you get your ticket. Show up some minutes in advance at the ATM point, skip the queue and your number will appear on the call screens at the time of the booking.

You can use the app to book a line ticket also for other operations, listed in the "type of appointment " menu, e.g. buying a replacement card in case of loss or theft.

Ratings and Reviews

It is a good start, unfortunately only sells tickets for traveling within the city limits.

The Giromilano section is great, but once you've found out which route to take... you can only buy tickets to travel within the city limits, which can easily bought at any vending machine. The App does not allow to purchase all the other tickets (extra-urbani) which are rather difficult to find.

Essential for Milan

This is the best public transportation app I’ve ever used in the States and abroad. With this app, there’s no need to purchase paper tickets for street level tram travel (show inspectors app screen to prove valid time remaining). For underground metro, we used the PNR codes to print out physical tickets or used the QR scanner via iPhone to use directly at the turnstiles. The journey planner provided accurate navigation routes. The app links directly to PayPal or credit card, which saved us from fishing for loose change every time we used public transportation The instructions in English are accurate and thorough. I only wish American public transportation authorities would develop a similar and effective app. This is essential for travel in Milan.

Back to the 90s

So you need to register on a mobile phone with email and phone, dig into your junk folder to verify the address, open a web browser to do that, then login again in the app. Choose from a badly described ticket options, which then moves you to a bank transaction page with too many fields, which doesn’t remember details, so you have to re-enter each time. The only nod to 2022 is the FaceID login, everything else is from the dawn of the internet, slow, not scaling, not using anything like apple/google logins/payment options, saving tickets to wallets, opening verification links in the app and not browsers, collecting information it doesn’t use like a phone number.

Requesting Your Card

If you wish to purchase a travel card for use on ATM routes and do not yet have an electronic card, you should go to whichever of the following outlets is most convenient: any ATM Point, any outlet located in the underground or one of our authorized outlets outside Milan (bars, newsstands, tobacconists, stationers). You will need to bring a passport photograph, a valid ID and your Italian social security number. At the outlet please collect a Card Request Form which must be completed in full with all the information requested and hand it in with a declaration that you are attending school or university. If you are underage the form must be filled in and signed by a parent. Forms are available from ATM Points, from all outlets in the underground and all authorized outlets outside Milan (bars, newsstands, tobacconists, stationers); a list of outlets is available on the Where to Buy Travel Cards page. When you hand in your completed request form, if the card will not be ready immediately you will be issued a request receipt. You should exhibit your request receipt when you collect the card.

Collecting your Card

You should collect your card from the same ATM Point or outlet at which you presented your request by exhibiting your request receipt. If you request your card from an ATM point it will be issued immediately between January and July; from August to September, when the majority of requests are made, cards are issued after 15 days. If you request your card from an outlet in the underground, cards are available 15 days after presentation of a request, whilst requests made at authorized outlets outside Milan are processed after about 30 days.

Validity and Cost

Electronic cards are valid for 4 years . You will need to renew your student travel card at the beginning of the school or academic year : this annual renewal, which is charged directly onto your card, costs € 10.

Renewing Your Travel Card at the Beginning of School or Academic Year

You will need to renew your student travel card at the beginning of the school or academic year: this annual renewal, which is charged directly onto your card, costs € 10. This operation serves to ensure that, during the current academic year, you are in fact a student and are therefore entitled to a student travel card. All you need to do to renew your ticket is to present your card at ATM Point, any of the ATM outlets in the underground or an authorized overground outlet and fill in the Student Travel Card Renewal Form , presenting a statement that you are a student. If you are underage the form must be filled in and signed by a parent.

Charging Your Card

You can charge your travel card onto your card at the ticket machines present in all underground stations, at authorized overground and underground outlets and at ATM Points: a list of addresses is available on the Where To Buy Travel Cards page. If you purchase a monthly travel card you may charge your card up to the 21th of the month. If you buy a monthly travel card for Milan city, you can charge your card with a maximum of 4 months at a time. If you buy an extraurban or cumulative monthly card, you can charge your card with a maximum of 1 month at a time. Annual travel cards can be charged up to the 21th of the month for validity from the 1st of the current month; from the 22th of the month onwards your travel card will be valid from the 1st of the following month.

Replacement Magnetic Coupons

At outlets not yet equipped to charge electronic cards, you will be issued with a magnetic coupon of the same value as your chosen travel card which should be carried with your electronic card at all times. To ensure that your coupon is valid, you must write the number of your electronic card and the type of travel card chosen on the coupon. Like electronic cards, coupons must be validated at the start of each journey and every time you change vehicle.

Renewing Expired Cards

When the card’s 4 year validity period comes to an end, you will need to go to an ATM Point with your card and fill in the Student Travel Card Renewal Form , presenting a declaration that you are a student. If you are underage the form must be filled in and signed by a parent. The cost of this operation is € 10.

Validating Your Card When Travelling

At the start of your journey and every time you change vehicle , you should swipe your card on the electronic card reader on board overground vehicles and at the ticket barriers in the underground. You should do the same with the magnetic coupon. On vehicles which do not have an electronic card reader you do not need to validate either your card or your magnetic coupon: in the event of a ticket inspection please present your coupon or the receipt for recharging your card which we advise passengers to store carefully and carry with them on all journeys.

Recommendations and Regulations for Use

The electronic card resembles a credit card in appearance and properties. As such it should be handled and stored with care; the card should not be bent, pierced or placed near sources of electromagnetic radiation. Cards are strictly personal and not be used by others. For the correct use of electronic cards on overground vehicles and on the underground please consult our FAQs on how to use the SBME (Magnetic and Electronic Ticketing system). Passengers not in possession of the valid card are liable to the fines specified in the regulations in force.

What To Do If Your Card is Stolen or Lost

To obtain a new card please go to an ATM Point with valid ID. If your card is stolen you should present a police report; if you lose your card you will need to fill in the lost card declaration form available at ATM Points and hand it to our staff. In both cases, there is a charge of € 15 for the issue of a new card. << Back to Student Travel Card page
