When and Where to See Cherry Blossom 2024 in Korea

In South Korea, spring is closely associated with the cherry blossom season, known as beot-kkot (벚꽃) in Korean. This season is highly recommended for visiting Korea due to the mild temperature and picturesque sceneries that can be found throughout the country. From late March to early April, streets, parks, and mountainsides across the country burst into pink and white hues as the delicate petals of cherry blossoms bloom in abundance. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or simply seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, Korea’s cherry blossom season is an experience not to be missed.

Why you should not call it “sakura” in Korea

The term “sakura” has cultural and historical connotations specific to Japan, and using it to describe cherry blossoms in Korea may be seen as inappropriate or disrespectful to Korean culture. It’s important to respect the individual cultural identities and nuances of different countries and avoid conflating them or imposing one’s own cultural norms onto another. Instead, using the Korean term “beot-kkot” or simply “cherry blossom” when referring to cherry blossoms in Korea is more appropriate and respectful.

Every year, th e Korean Meteorological Administration releases a cherry blossom forecast that predicts where and when the cherry blossoms will bloom. The blooming period usually falls at the end of March and lasts until the middle of April, but this may vary slightly depending on the region. The forecast is especially helpful for planning trips to specific regions to view the cherry blossoms.

Find below the peak dates of the blooming season for each region:

Cherry blossom trees can be found all over Korea, but if you want to make the most out of your cherry blossom experience in Korea, festivals are usually the best to attend. Cherry blossom festivals are held in many cities in Korea to celebrate the arrival of spring. These festivals offer a variety of programs and activities, such as music performances, food stalls, and nighttime illuminations, which enhance the overall viewing experience. In addition, the festival locations are carefully chosen based on the cherry blossom forecast, ensuring that visitors can enjoy the full splendor of the blooms.

Which cherry blossom festival is the most popular in Korea?

While there are many great spots to view cherry blossoms in Korea, Jinhae (진해) is considered one of the best.

Jinhae is a district in the city of Changwon, located in the southern part of Korea. It is home to the famous Jinhae Gunhangje Festival, which is one of the largest and most popular cherry blossom festivals in the country. During the festival, the streets of Jinhae are adorned with pink and white cherry blossoms, creating a spectacular sight.

Quick Summary

✅ Spring is the cherry blossom season, which also makes it the best time to visit South Korea if you wish to see these flowers in full bloom.

✅ Cherry blossom festivals are celebrated in various parts of Korea, from the scenic Jeju Island to Seoul’s majestic palaces.

Cherry Blossoms in Korea Overview

The cherry blossom is usually associated with Japan, where it is known as Sakura. This is in part because the cherry blossom is the natural flower of Japan. In Korea, it is called 벗꽃 (beotkkot) . It’s a common Korean word around this time of year .

The cherry blossom tree is closely related to other common trees, including almond, peach, plum, and apricot trees. Even though these trees are all similar to the cherry blossom tree, none of these trees have the uniquely beautiful pink blossoms that the cherry blossom tree has. Cherry blossom trees also have a lovely scent – many perfume and cosmetic companies have tried to replicate it in sprays and lotions.

Cherry blossoms in Jeju Island

Most of the cherry trees in Korea are believed to be slightly different species of tree than those in Japan. The Korean cherry tree, known as the “king cherry,” originated from Jeju Island, which is also the first place that the cherry blossom occurred due to its slightly warmer climate. The King Cherry blossom tree is slightly different from most other types of cherry blossom trees because the blooms are huge, and they only bloom in full force for a couple of days at a time.

The blossoming starts on Jeju Island in late March, but although some die-hard cherry blossom pilgrims might make the trip to Jeju to see the first blossoms of the year, it might be better to save your trip to Jeju for another time and experience one of the many cherry blossom festivals on the mainland instead.

Below, we list some of the names in both Korean and English. If you can’t read the Korean alphabet yet, you can learn the basics in under an hour . And if you are already learning Korean , this will be excellent practice for you.

Gyeongbokgung Palace With Cherry Blossom In Spring, korea

For the budding photographer, the cherry blossoms are the perfect chance to visit one of Seoul’s palaces and capture some truly spectacular natural beauty. Gyeongbokgung or Changdeokgung are excellent spots to take amazing photos – the architecture is amazing, and the grounds ooze with a rich history. The best palace to see the cherry blossoms is the lesser-known Changgyeonggung.

Hidden away behind Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung Palace is best reached by taking a bus or subway to Hyehwa Station. Although it’s a little bit of a trek, it’s worth it once you get here! Having the chance to experience this lesser-known palace away from crowds with the cherry blossoms in full bloom is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Gyeongbokgung Palace With Cherry Blossom

The Japanese planted cherry trees in Changgyeonggung Palace during the period of Japanese rule, and as a result, this palace has more of trees than the other palaces in Seoul. Spending your afternoon checking out the palaces and cherry blossoms and finishing the day with a warm cup of coffee – what more can you ask for?

Cherry Blossoms in Gyeonggi Region

If you live on the outskirts of Seoul or you want to visit an area of Korea with fewer people, less traffic, and fewer crowds, then check out the cherry blossoms in the Gyeonggi region. Gyeonngi surrounds almost the entire area of Seoul, so you should have plenty of places to see the blossoms. That being said, read on to find out more about a specific spot you won’t want to miss!

Cherry Blossoms at Nami Island

Bonus points if you bring your special somebody and wow them with a quiet, romantic spot to see cherry blossoms and enjoy each other’s company.

Nami is a famous attraction in Chuncheon, Gyeonggi that attracts tourists, couples, and Korean drama fans. One of the reasons for its fame is because of a scene from the drama  Winter Sonata (겨울 연가 | gyeoul yeonga in Korean).

In addition to the cherry blossoms, you can also enjoy a theme park, shooting range, roller skating rink, and various water sports, so there really is something for every visitor that makes their way out to the island.

Nami fun fact: There are no telephone poles on the island! Instead of having the electrical wires in the air, they were run underground to make the island feel more natural. That means telephone poles won’t be cluttering the background of the pictures you take of the cherry blossoms!

There are many pavilions in the Gyeongpo area, but you’ll want to head to the center of the Gyeongpodae Pavilion to see the blossoms. Check out flower exhibitions and cultural performances while enjoying the rural northeast part of Korea. The festival brings together crowds of people every year who enjoy celebrating cherry blossoms and putting together performances for visitors, so it’s something you won’t want to miss!

If you’re looking for a region for a nice, relaxing warm weather beach vacation, you should definitely consider the Gyeongsang Region.

These days, it’s also gaining popularity for having some of the best areas for seeing cherry blossoms in Korea. The cherry trees in this region tend to bloom earlier than in the northern part of the country, so make sure you plan accordingly!

This also means if you happen to be in Korea a little bit too early in the year to see the cherry blossom blooms in most of the regions on this list, you can still soak up the beauty of the blossoms in Gyeongsang.

After all, you are going to want to take some gorgeous photos, and what better background to have than some old hanok houses or mountainside? Your pictures will end up looking like a quintessential Korean postcard!

Gyeongju has not one but three cherry blossom festivals around the city. There is even a cherry blossom marathon for those who like to enjoy the beauty of nature whilst experiencing fatigue and physical pain. If you’re one of the elite who can actually run 26.2 miles in a row, then put the cherry blossom marathon on your bucket list!

Gyeongju is a great place for riding a bike

For the cherry blossom observers a little less inclined to run for a couple of hours at a time, why not rent a bike and cycle around the city enjoying its historical sites as well as the cherry blossoms without breaking a sweat.

Bomun Lake and Dongbu historical complex, both a short bus ride (or long but scenic cycle ride) from the city center, have festivals with performances and exhibitions to enjoy. If you prefer to stay in the downtown area, you can see the cherry blossoms in Heungmu Park instead while still getting a taste of the downtown nightlife when the sun sets.

If you’re planning to see the cherry blossoms on Jeju Island, then you might want to add a few extra days to your trip. There’s plenty to see, the weather is beautiful, and the food is tasty–so you’ll be happy you did! It’s not a place you’ll want to leave readily when your trip is over.

Types of Cherry Blossoms in Korea

Let’s discuss the many types of cherry blossoms in South Korea. There are minor variations between these and the cherry blossom trees that bloom first, which is crucial to know if you intend to explore Korea’s cherry blossom landscape.

Yoshino Cherry Blossom

The Yoshino Cherry Blossom is the most common cherry blossom in South Korea. It blooms earlier than other types, usually around late March to early April. There are five petals on the pale pink flowers of the tree that can grow up to 15 meters tall.

  • King Cherry Blossoms

They are said to have originated on Jeju Island. But some people in Korea believe they’re the same as Yoshino trees. The blooms on this tree are larger and pinker in hue. Overall, the King cherry trees are somewhat rarer and bloom a few weeks later than the Yoshino trees, which bloom between early to mid-April and a bit later.

Maehwa Blossoms

Also called the plum blossom, this flower is part of the rose family. They have a subtle, sweet fragrance and usually bloom around late March to early April.

Azaleas Blossoms

These blooms come in various colors: white, pink, and red. They typically bloom between early April and mid-May and can reach a height of three meters.

Next, let’s discuss Korea’s cherry blossom forecast in more detail. Overall, the sequence of blooming usually goes like this:

  • Maehwa (and Sansuyu)
  • Azaleas (they last longer)
  • Yoshino Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossoms in Korea first appear in the south and then advance northward. So you may visit the cherry blossoms in Jinhae, Busan, Ulsan, Pohang, and Gwangju before moving on to Seoul for the ultimate cherry blossom experience.

When is the Best Time to See Cherry Blossoms in Seoul?

The first week of April is when the cherry blossom peak in Seoul generally occurs, although this varies from year to year. The Korean government expects cherry blossoms in Seoul to begin on March 28, 2023. People usually visit Yeouido Park for the cherry blossom festival during this time.

The blooming period is relatively short, only lasting about two weeks. So if you’re planning a trip to see the cherry blossoms in Korea, make sure to plan your trip accordingly!

Where to See Cherry Blossoms in Seoul (6 Best Spots)

Last Updated: Feb 28, 2024 by Max · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Spring is the best time to visit Korea because of Seoul's numerous cherry blossom festivals. From the end of March to mid-April, rows of Seoul cherry blossoms will bloom, creating beautiful paths of pink and light purple.

Despite the fluctuating weather, people come from all parts of the country to take pictures, have a picnic, or watch the song & dance performances by buskers and traditional performers from day to night.

This year, however, the parks in this list canceled the festival due to the pandemic but have remained open for people to enjoy the view of cherry blossoms.

Every year, Seoul celebrates the cherry blossom season by heading to Yeouido Hangang Park , where the Seoul Cherry Blossom Festival is. This park has the greatest number of cherry blossom trees in Seoul (approximately 1500) lining the paths, creating a trail you can complete in an hour.

Moreover, Yeouido Park offers a wide range of activities nearby, especially in spring . It’s large enough to rent a bike for a leisurely trip around the cherry blossom course, or you can choose to take a romantic cruise to appreciate the view from the Han River.

If you want to know more about what’s in store for you during spring, you can also download some of the travel guide apps for Korea.

I truly believe spring is the best time to visit Korea because of the cherry blossoms. Here’s a short guide on how to enjoy your trip to Korea in spring to the fullest.

  • Check the cherry blossom forecast (see above).

There are four notable cherry blossom variations across Korea. The blooming sequence begins with the pure white maehwa (plum blossom) and the bright yellow sansuyu , followed by the delicate pink someiyoshino (Yoshino cherry tree). Then the more profound and larger flowers of the wangbot namu (King cherry tree) bloom last.

It is also important to note that flowers from southern parts of Korea bloom first. Knowing when the blossoms start each year is essential because they only last about 10 days after the first bloom. You can refer to this site to find the cherry blossom forecast each year.

  • Visit places outside Seoul to maximize your cherry blossom viewing experience.

As mentioned above, southern parts of Korea experience spring first, making Jeju-do or Jeollanam-do the best regions to start your cherry blossom pilgrimage.

Be sure to swing by Gurye Sansuyu Village to see the yellow blossoms brighten the Bangok Village nearby, and then you can check out the snow-like coat of maehwa in Gwangyang Maehwa Village. All the blooms across Jeju-do bloom within a few days of each other, and feature all across the island.

best time to visit korea for cherry blossom 2023

  • Don’t just view the flowers during the day; go see them at night

Enjoying the whites and pinks should not be limited to daytime. At night, the Seoul cherry blossoms are just as beautiful because parks like Yeouido and Namsan are surrounded by skyscrapers that provide a spectacular city view.

  • Don’t touch the trees!

Because the blossoms only last for a short time, people are asked to be careful while posing next to the trees. Some people think pulling the branches down to create a beautiful effect for their selfie is okay, but the petals are actually incredibly fragile and easily fall off.

Other people sometimes shake the trees to create a petal shower, but this completely balds the tree and ruins the fun for other people.

  • Bring a coat or a proper jacket to keep you warm.

The weather around this time may be warmer, but especially early in the mornings there will be times chilly enough to warrant a jacket. Also bring a shawl or wear gloves if you get cold easily! Some may want to bring an umbrella because light showers are common during this season.

  • Rent a hanbok.

Wearing a traditional hanbok under the cherry trees not only makes for a good picture, but also makes your Korean experience more authentic.

If you decide to visit any of the 5 palaces in Seoul to see the cherry blossoms, there are plenty of hanbok rental places nearby. The best perk? People wearing hanbok are granted free entry to the Seoul palaces.

best time to visit korea for cherry blossom 2023

Korean winters are bitterly cold, and locals tend to bundle up and stay inside their homes eating tons of hotteok and gunbam to keep warm until March. When the weather’s kinder, people come out of their hibernations to see the sun and the white-pink blossoms that always signify the start of spring.

Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival

Neighborhood : Yeouido-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu

Stop & Exit Number : Yeouinaru Station (Line 5, Exit 2 & 3)

Dates : First week of April

Yeouido Park is the first place that comes to mind when people mention the cherry blossom festival in Seoul. The reason is that this park holds more than a thousand cherry trees that come into full bloom all at once, making it the pinkest part of Seoul during spring.

Here, street performances and food vendors greet you on every corner as you traverse the gorgeous path that borders the Han river. Furthermore, you can do plenty of things in the park after walking through the blooms, such as biking, picnicking, and even cruising.

best time to visit korea for cherry blossom 2023

Seokchon Lake Cherry Blossom Festival

Neighborhood : Jamsil-dong, Songpa-gu

Stop & Exit Number : Jamsil Station (Line 2, Exit 2-1)

Dates : 2 nd -3 rd week of April

A pleasant lake full of ducks, this cherry blossom area is also near the Lotte World’s Magic Island, with the Lotte World Tower Seoul Sky Observatory seen in the distance.

At a certain angle, this festival feels more of a medieval celebration, with buskers serving as modern-day minstrels, serenading passers-by as they enjoy the view of the cherry blossoms reflected on the water.

Namsan Cherry Blossom Festival

Neighborhood : Namsangongwon-gil, Jung-gu

Stop & Exit Number : Myeongdong Station (Line 4, Exit 3)

Dates : Last week of March to 1 st week of April

This park may have an astonishing view of the mountain, but its cherry blossom trail is just as breathtaking. Since this park is also known as the largest in Seoul, the aforementioned trail is also the longest.

After a pleasant stroll here, you can head to the N-Seoul Tower to see the entire park from an  observation deck  445 feet above the city.

best time to visit korea for cherry blossom 2023

Kyunghee University Cherry Blossom Viewing

Neighborhood : Kyungheedae-ro, Dongdaemun-gu

Stop & Exit Number : Hoegi Station (Line 1, Exit 1)

Dates : middle of April

During spring, Kyunghee University turns into a gorgeous destination in Korea. While walking around, you might chance upon a beautiful pond, installation pieces from the school’s art department, and a giant fountain in front of the main building.

All of these sights are made even more beautiful by the cherry blossoms in the backdrop. For the ultimate Korean student experience, try the savory haemulpajeon sold on the street carts while viewing the cherry blossoms here.

Bongeunsa Temple

Neighborhood : Gangnam-gu

Stop & Exit Number : Bongeunsa Station (Line 9, Exit 1)

Dates : mid to last week of April

This charming temple houses a great view of the cherry trees, even though it’s located in the middle of the frenetic streets of Seoul. Furthermore, it’s in front of Starfield CoEx Mall, a place designed to provide everything Seoul has to offer , albeit in a smaller venue.

It has a musical theater, and an aquarium, and because it’s the cherry blossom season in Korea, expect CoEx to hold events along this theme.

best time to visit korea for cherry blossom 2023

Seoul Forest Cherry Blossom Viewing

Neighborhood : Ttukseom-ro, Seongdong-gu

Stop & Exit Number : Seoul Forest Station (Suin-Bundang Line, Exit 4)

Dates : Late March to first week of April

This solemn park opens its gates to people who want to enjoy the white cherry blossoms in peace. Sure it will be crowded for the first few days, but at least compared to the other parks, the eco forest offers the chance for long periods of alone time.

This is because it’s not as popular, and the trails are long and wide. Moreover, if you want to see deer up close, you can visit the corral housing these gentle creatures somewhere in the park.

Dream Forest Cherry Blossom Viewing

Neighborhood : Wolgye-ro, Gangbuk-gu

Stop & Exit Number : Miasageori Station (Line 4, Exit 1)

This park needs to be talked about more because every spot is picturesque, and the spring foliage highlights the surrounding hanok structures bordering this park.

Since it’s not as popular as the other parks, the cherry blossom path is quieter and spacious enough to let you take all the pictures you could ever want without being disrupted by other people. It also has small pagodas that are the perfect location for a hanbok selfie.

Spring is when the world starts to revive after the cold, blistering winter months . In Korea, cherry blossoms bloom during March and April, bringing back the warmth and desire to come outdoors to the people. It’s a lovely sight that tends to encourage a festive mood and togetherness.

South Korean Cities with the Best Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossoms start blooming around 24 March on Jeju Island — the southernmost part of South Korea. If you’re planning to hit a few cities, start from the south and plan your route northward according to the bloom patterns.

Jeju Island is home to a native species of cherry blossom known as the Jeju Flowering Cherry (previously known as King Cherry). With slightly bigger petals than the ubiquitous Yoshino cherry species found in Japan, the Jeju Flowering Cherry was once misidentified as just another Yoshino until the late eighties.

Today, many visitors flock to Jeju Island during the months of spring to witness the blooming of the rarer Jeju native.

Best Viewing Spots: Downtown area of Seogwipo, Mt. Hallasan,  Jeonnong-ro, Hallim Park,  Noksan-ro, Jeonnong-ro cherry blossom street

Getting Around:  There are three public bus systems in Jeju Island, and they are all as inconvenient as they are confusing. So unless you have a lot of time in Jeju Island, we’ll recommend you forgo cost-savings and just charter a private car  or rent one to save both time and planning.

The biggest cherry blossom festival in the country would be the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival near Busan. And if you’re travelling around Busan or the southern area of South Korea, there’s also Gyeongju , the old capital of Silla, where you can feast your eyes on cherry blossoms galore.

South Korea is a pretty homogenous country and everywhere seems to be the same after a while, but Busan offers different views as a coastal city. If you’ve had enough of Seoul-searching, hop onto that train to Busan to experience a South Korea unlike any other.

Best Viewing Spots:  Hwangnyeongsan Mountain, Dalmaji-gil Road, Macdo Ecological Park, Samnak Ecological Park, Oncheon-cheon, Yeonji Park, Namcheon-dong Cherry Blossom Road, Gyeonghwa Station (in Jinhae), Yeojwacheon Stream (in Jinhae), Bomun Complex (in Gyeongju)

Busan is also a perfect base for a road trip , with underrated cities like Gyeongju and Daegu less than 3 hours away by car.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cherry Blossoms in South Korea

1) what do locals usually do during the cherry blossom season.

Cherry Blossom flowers in South korea - Sakura Guide

Similar to Japan’s Hanami , South Koreans also enjoy “벚꽃 놀이   ( beot-ggot nori or flower viewing)” during springtime. This comes hand-in-hand with another activity — springtime picnic!

Public parks and gardens in South Korea will be busier than usual during springtime, whether or not cherry blossom trees are in sight. To South Koreans, springtime picnics are simply get-together time enjoyed with family and friends. Mothers would dress their kids up and even prepare extravagant lunch boxes.

Other typical food items Koreans would prepare in their picnic baskets include  gimbap , dosirak (Korean lunchbox), gyeran-mari (omelette roll), and even makgeolli  rice wine and red wine!

2) What’s a Cherry Blossom festival like in South Korea?

Jinhae Cherry Blossom festival busan - Sakura Guide

Jinhae Gunhangje Festival (진해군항제).

Cherry blossom festivals in South Korea last from a week to a month and are often hyped up with makeshift markets, street performers and even staged concerts. South Koreans even have a term “봄을 타다 ( bom-eul ta da )”, which loosely translates to “ride the spring”, to represent a specific change of mood as spring arrives.

The fanciest cherry blossom festival of all is none other than the  Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival  in Busan. There’s a slow-speed sightseeing “cherry blossom shuttle train” that only operates during the period of the festival, and visitors can also expect fireworks displays on certain nights.

3) What should travellers be prepared for during this season?

Cherry Blossom Season - South Korea Cherry Blossom

In South Korea, there’s a term “봄비 ( bom bi )” that translates to “spring rain”. Though temperatures are generally climbing higher, light rain is expected to be quite frequent during springtime so pack warm and waterproof outerwear. There’s no need to bring along heat packs and umbrellas as those are sold at most convenience stores in South Korea.

Friends in Hanbok - South Korea Cherry Blossom

That said, the first rainfall marks the end of the freezing winter and it’s also a signal that flowering trees will start blooming. So that means it’s time to rent a hanbok (Korean traditional costume)  and be one with the spring scene of South Korea.

hi! just a quick question will still there be cherry blossom if i travel on May 16 to May 21?

Hi Reena, I’m afraid it will be too late to view cherry blossoms in May, as most will be in full bloom from late March to early April.

Hi, I will be visiting Seoul in 1 May, any chance there will by any cherry blossom left? 🙁

Hi YS, chances of spotting cherry blossoms in May are quite low as they are currently in full bloom now in Seoul. You might get to see azaleas though! Enjoy Seoul! 🙂

Can you get married under the cherry blossum trees in S Korea ?

Just the marriage ceremony ??

Don’t see why not! I guess it depends on where exactly the trees are at.

Hi. I am planning a cherry blossom trip to Korea next year 2024. Should I wait till exact blossom date to buy tickets and book accommodations?

Hey Dona! This is really a tough question to answer. Generally the closer it is and the more confirmed the forecast, the more expensive the tickets and accommodation will be. If you’re happy to take a chance, it’ll be much more affordable to estimate ahead of time.

Hi! I’ll be visiting Seoul from April 14th-16th and hoping there will be Cherry blossom left. Would you think it’s possible this year.

Hey Kasey, there’s a small chance but they probably will not be at full bloom as it’s supposed to be around 3 April. That said, they usually last about a week after full bloom and not every single location blooms at the exact same time, which is why there’s still a small chance!

Best (and Worst) Times to Visit South Korea in 2025

South Korea experiences four distinct seasons. Generally, the best times to visit South Korea are in spring (March to May) for the cherry blossoms and autumn (September to November) for the fall foliage . Both periods have mild temperatures with an average range of around 10–16°C (50–61°F), with more clear days than summer/winter.

The best time for you to visit South Korea could be different however, depending on what you want to see and your travel preferences. Read our article to find out the best times to visit South Korea based on different factors.

  • 1.South Korea Weather and Climate
  • 2. The Worst Times to Visit South Korea
  • 3. Best Times for Pleasant Weather and Fewer Crowds
  • 4. The Cheapest Time to Visit South Korea
  • 5. South Korea Travel Guide by Month

South Korea Weather and Climate

South Korea has four distinct seasons:

Spring (March to May): Being one of the best times to visit South Korea, the average temperature ranges from 8–16°C (46–61°F) , providing pleasant weather to enjoy the cherry blossoms and outdoor activities.

Summer (June to August): The sweltering conditions may make it uncomfortable for you to explore sightseeing spots during summer in South Korea. The average daily high during this season is 30°C (86°F) and there is frequent rainfall due to the rainy season. June is a better time to travel compared to July and August as it's cooler and has fewer crowds, with an average daily temperature range of 18–27°C (64–81°F).

Autumn (September to November): This is another one of the best times to visit South Korea. Cooler temperatures and decreased rainfall are the main features of this season. The average night-day temperature range is from 10 to 18°C (50–64°F). Many locals choose to go hiking during fall.

Winter (December to February): It is the coldest and driest time of the year, with temperatures ranging from 3 to 5°C (37–41°F) on a typical day. We don't usually advise visiting South Korea during this period because it is too cold for comfort. However, if you are going for skiing or snowboarding activities, it's a different story. A Japanese skiing/ winter experience is even better though.

The Worst Times to Visit South Korea

The summer months (July to August) in South Korea are the worst time to visit. High temperatures usually reach up 35°C (95°F) on the hottest days, and two-thirds of the annual rainfall occurs during this season, making heavy rainfall common. Therefore, you're recommended to avoid this period if you have a flexible schedule.

The second worst time to visit South Korea is in winter , from December to February. January is the coldest month of the year, with temperatures in Seoul sometimes dropping below -10°C (14°F) and occasionally falling below -15°C (5°F).

Best Times for Pleasant Weather and Fewer Crowds

Late April to May has mild weather in South Korea , with average daily temperatures ranging from 13 to 23°C (55–73°F), and there are more sunny days before the rainy season arrives. The crowds of people viewing the cherry blossoms have disappeared and the summer vacation has not yet started, making it a perfect time to do outdoor activities and go sightseeing.

June is the start of summer and the rainy season in South Korea. The night-day temperature range is about 18–27°C (64–81°F) and rainfall typically consists of steady drizzles, but it doesn't rain every day.

September marks the tail end of the summer crowds and the rainy season. The weather tends to be drier and cooler, with an average daily temperature range of 17–26°C (63–79°F). More crowds arrive in October and November for the colorful autumn scenery. South Korea usually has a 3-day holiday in September for the important Chuseok (Mid-Autumn) festival and some stores may close or open late. Chuseok would not affect your trip and could be a chance to see more of Korea's culture.

The Cheapest Time to Visit South Korea

Winter (December to February) is the cheapest time to visit South Korea, except during Christmas and New Year (usually from December 23rd to January 5th). Not only could you benefit from lower hotel prices and better deals on international flights, but also you would see fewer crowds. However, be prepared for the chilly weather!

October to November: Best Time for Autumn Foliage

  • Average temperature: 7–16°C (45–61°F)
  • Average rainfall: 52 mm (2 in)

October to November is one of the peak times to travel to South Korea due to the comfortable weather and sunny days. The whole country explodes with colors and you could enjoy the stunning red and yellow fall foliage scenery.

December: Celebrating Christmas

  • Average temperature: -3–4°C (27–39°F)
  • Average rainfall: 22 mm (1 in)

December is cold and dry in South Korea. Although it's not quite as cold as January, it's too cold for travel without being encumbered by lots of warm clothing. If you want to celebrate Christmas with your family in South Korea, remember to book your Christmas feast in advance.

Apart from Japan ‘s sakura craze, South Korea cherry blossom season is also a sought-after event in Asia — especially because it can be quite short! As such, this is one of the best times to explore the country and witness the unique beauty and vibe that the blossoms add to the local landscapes and sights.

Your top-of-mind destination will surely be the capital, Seoul , but I urge you to try and make time in exploring other places like Busan or Jeju Island .

South Korea Cherry Blossom Map Forecast

2024 South Korea Cherry Blossom Forecast

  • DISCLAIMER : The above data is as of March 2024. Take note that sudden changes in temperature, rainfall, and wind strength can accelerate, delay, or shorten the forecast above — but you can already use this initial forecast as a preliminary guide. Rest assured, I will keep this post updated once dates happen to change so come drop by from time to time!

In most parts of South Korea, the cherry blossom’s blooming dates start around the last week of March (starting in Jeju Island) and last until the first week of April; but cherry blossom season in Seoul, in particular, has blooms that come a little later.

Koreans typically call cherry blossoms beot-kkot (벗꽃) and they are not to be confused with similar-looking blooms like that from the almond, apricot, peach, and plum trees. Besides, South Korean cherry blossoms have a unique pink hue and a lovely scent that is somewhat different from that of Japan.

NOTE: The Korean cherry tree which is also known as ‘King Cherry’ originated from Jeju Island and it slightly differs from most other cherry blossom trees due to the fact that its flowers are larger. They also only bloom in full for only a couple of days!

All in all, if you’re planning a trip to South Korea any time soon, you should take note of these top places from ALL of the regions in the country that will give you beautiful cherry blossom views, as well as a chance to participate in bustling cherry blossom festivals!

Come and check out this list of the top things to do in South Korea which features the best activities and tours to do in places like Seoul, Busan, and more!

South KoreaTravel Guide

» best time to visit.

Any time and any season!  No matter if it’s spring, summer, autumn, or winter, South Korea has a ton of destinations and activities to fill up your itinerary! But if you want to avoid the peak seasons, you should visit either during autumn or winter. Why not summer? It’s when schools and Korean companies take a vacation so a lot of locals will be up and about; and of course, spring is extremely popular because of the cherry blossom season.

  • WINTER: Dec to Feb
  • SPRING: March to May
  • SUMMER: June to Aug
  • AUTUMN: Sept to Nov

» Getting in to South Korea

By air.  International visitors typically arrive at the main airport called Incheon International Airport (ICN) . To get here, I recommend browsing through  Skyscanner  to find the best flight deals from your point of origin.

» Visa for South Korea

If you’re NOT a citizen of any of South Korea’s  exempted countries , you are then required to avail of a visa beforehand. (If you’re from the Philippines, you can read my guide on how to get a  South Korea visa  in Manila  here .)

  • Check full visa requirements here as per your nationality.

» Where to Stay (South Korea Accommodations)

To search for the best hotel accommodation in South Korea at the best prices, I suggest cross-checking hotel prices between  Agoda  and  Booking.com . But if you’re rather interested in renting comfortable houses or apartments, you should search through AirBnB .

» South Korea Currency

South Korean Won (KRW / ₩) wherein KRW 1,000 is equal to about USD $0.9~, €0.7~ or Php 49.00~ (this is as of March 2024). In the event that you want to exchange your money for KRW, I highly advise that you do NOT exchange your money at the airport since the rates there are not competitive.

  • How to best exchange your currency? Either exchange your money at a bank or at a money exchanger in your home country or in Seoul’s city center. Better yet, just withdraw from an ATM with your debit/credit card (do one big withdrawal to minimize fees with your bank) . Speaking of cards, a lot of Seoul’s establishments accept credit cards but it’s always advisable to have cash on hand.

» Cost of Travel in Korea

(Values below show low budget to medium budget ranges).

» How to Get Around South Korea

By plane . South Korea has a great network of domestic flights that will take you, for instance, from Seoul to Busan, Jeju, Daegu, etc., and vice versa. Some airlines that operate these routes are Asiana and Korean Air as well as low-cost ones like Air Busan and Jeju Air. To look for the best flight deals, always book through  Skyscanner .

By train . A lot of the major cities in South Korea are connected by the national train operator called Korail. As a foreigner, you can take advantage of the KR Pass that grants you unlimited travel on any Korail Train for 2, 3, 4 or 5 days.

Meanwhile, when you’re mapping out your day-to-day route, just use  Google Maps  because it will show in detail the fastest connections you can do (by walking, by car, by bus, and by train).

» Staying Connected in South Korea

South Korea is said to have the fastest internet in the world (and yep, it’s true!) so you’ll be assured of great connection wherever you go. To add, most places even offer FREE WiFi — but in order to consistently stay connected online during your Seoul trip, I recommend getting your own pocket WiFi  or  SIM Card .

» Safety in South Korea

The Republic of Korea or South Korea remains to be one of the safest countries in the world — and also one of the safest countries for solo female travelers . Petty theft may happen but they are quite rare; so, just practice common sense at all times and you’ll be fine!

  • HOW TO: Find the right travel insurance for you

» Helpful Korean Phrases

English is not widely spoken in South Korea even if it is taught in a lot of schools, but you’ll have better luck in the capital of Seoul where a lot of people put time, effort and money in learning English. Nevertheless, it doesn’t hurt to learn a bit of the local language!

Great, informative and very comprehensive post. I’d love to visit Korea someday.

Birru

Hi Aileen, this is such a comprehensive information! I’m planning to witness spring in 2023 in South Korea – but likely be mid March. Will there be any cherry blossom at all during that period?

Aileen Adalid

Most of the blooms will start around the end of March, unfortunately. But if you’re going to stay there until the end of March to early April, then you should be able to see some! Otherwise, you will still be able to see some other blooms such as that of the plum trees.

Also, as you will also see in the map above, the yearly blossoms are often around those periods. They rarely change, only just a few days more or less. Enjoy your trip!

Alexa John

Thanks for such an amazing blog, I have always wanted to visit South Korea. It is such a peaceful and beautiful place to visit. I love cherry blossoms, I think they are the prettiest flower that exists in the world. Japan has cherry blossoms too but South Korea has my heart and I wish to visit one of these places you have mentioned to see cherry blossoms.

Bas

Wow, this is very comprehensive! Thank you!

I’m glad to hear that, I hope this helps for your future trip :D

Where To See Cherry Blossoms In Korea 2024

Spring in Korea doesn’t really begin until those beautiful light pink cherry blossoms bloom. At least in my opinion. Are you looking for the cherry blossom blooming forecast? You’ve come to the right place. Let’s see cherry blossoms this spring.

There are numerous places to see cherry blossoms in Seoul and around Korea with some being more popular than others. You could really walk down the most mundane neighborhood and see cherry blossoms though so while you should and probably will seek to find some of the more major spots, also just keep your eyes peeled for trees along the way.

Last year, the first blossoms I noticed were down the back alleys of Yeonnam-dong near Hongdae . It’s definitely not a spot people recommend to see cherry blossoms, but like I said, they’re everywhere.

PS, if you love these iconic light pink cherry blossoms, you should also be on the lookout for the double cherry blossoms that are fluffier, pinker, and bloom a couple weeks after these beauties.

Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival, Seoul, Korea

Called sakura in Japan and beot-kkot in Korean, cherry blossoms are often confused with other flowering trees including the peach blossoms and plum blossoms. I’ve been corrected a few times when people tell me what I shared was actually a peach blossom. Personally, I don’t mind as long as it’s a blossom, but yes, there are other flowering trees to be seen around the peninsula. My personal favorite is actually the King Cherry Blossom which you can see pictured in this guide to Andong . They are huge, fluffy and dark pink. Oh they’re gorgeous. But back to the guide at hand.

There’s lots of info here so feel free to skip around. Here’s what you’ll find in this post:

Pack The Right Clothes: Seoul has four distinct seasons and spring can really be quite chilly and quite warm. Be prepared. Check out this post for what to pack when you come to Korea which will also fill you in on spring in Korea and what to wear.

T-Money Card/Discover Seoul Pass:  To get around using the subways or buses or other public transportation options, you’ll need to get a T-Money card. This card allows you to put money on it and scan it at the turnstiles in subways and when you’re getting on and off buses and even works in taxis. HOWEVER, if you’ll be doing a lot of touristy things and visiting the touristy sites, then you might be better off getting the Discover Seoul Pass. This pass comes with a variety of perks like access to Hanbok rentals, palaces, view points and other major attractions AND it also works as a T-Money card. SO, if you’ll be touristy,  grab the Discover Seoul Pass  to get out and about. But do know how to use it. Here is a  guide and itineraries for using the Discover Seoul Pass  to the max.

Korea Rail Pass:  If you want to get out of Seoul and plan to use the train more than twice, then the Korea Rail Pass is the economical/budget choice you want to have on hand. You can get back and forth between the popular  Nami Island  nearby the city or go as far as  Andong  or even  Busan . The train line is the limits.  Grab the card here  and just head to the station with your confirmation and it’s as easy as that.

Cherry Blossoms, Ansan Mountain, Seoul, Korea

Cherry blossoms in South Korea from the end of March into April usually and they are rather fleeting so you want to try and plan ahead as best you can then jump as soon as you get confirmation that they are blooming. Here are is the projected cherry blossom forecast in Korea for 2024.

Korea Cherry Blossom Blooming Schedule 2024

  • Jeju Island: March 22
  • Gwangju: March 27
  • Jeonju: March 27
  • Busan: March 27
  • Yeosu, Jinhae: March 29
  • Daejeon: March 31
  • Gangneung: March 31
  • Seoul: April 3
  • Incheon:  April 8
  • Chuncheon, Nami Island: April 7

The blossoms start blooming in the southern parts and then work their way up over a week or so. If you plan to travel to see blooms, plan on going south for a weekend to see them down there and then move up. Watch the weather forecast closely because if there is a rain storm, it can often end the cherry blossom season early. We only get about two weeks of peak cherry blossom viewing so just go go go and rest later.

Where To Find Cherry Blossoms In Seoul

There are cherry blossoms everywhere! There really are. In this guide you’ll find a mix of the most popular and the hidden local favorites. Read along and see which spot will most meet your needs. Some are more easily accessible, and some hidden behind waterfalls. Which will you prefer?

Yeouido (여의도)

One of the most popular places to see cherry blossoms in Seoul is Yeouido Island. There are more than 1500 trees that line the boulevards that circle the island and there’s a park nearby that has even more. If you want to see what the Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival (영등포 여의도 봄꽃축제) looks like in action, check out this post I did a couple years back after attending. You can go whether the festival is on or not, so just hop on that subway when you’re free and head that way. The is one of the easiest parks to access so can get pretty busy in the spring.

If you’re planning to travel to Korea in the spring, stay in Conrad Hotel so you can visit this park just a block away. Another great thing to do while you’re in the area, take an Eland Cruise. The docks for this fun ferry ride is just in the park and it’s a fun addition if you’re headed to Yeouido.

  • Festival Dates:  Dates not yet set this year
  • Address: Gukhoe-daero, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul (서울특별시 영등포구 국회대로)
  • How To Get There: You can access the area via National Assembly Subway Station, or Yeouinaru Subway Station.

Dream Forest (북서울 꿈의숲), Seoul, Korea: Cherry blossoms

Dream Forest (북서울 꿈의숲)

Last year was the first time we headed up to Dream Forest but we had a gorgeous scene before us. Get there early because it started getting busy around noon. Dream Forest was previously known as Odong Neighborhood Park. It is the fourth largest park in Seoul and beautiful in the spring, it’s also beautiful throughout the year, so just go!

  • Address:  173 Wolgye-ro, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (서울 강북구 월계로 173)
  • How To Get There:  Head to Miasageori Subway Station and go out of exit 1. Walk north to the first intersection and turn right. The road will take you right into the park.

Ansan Mountain (안산)

This spot is definitely not widely known. In fact, I happened upon it when I was living nearby and went for a walk one spring day. Not only are the cherry blossoms bursting on Ansan mountain that is a very easy hike/walk, but there’s also a waterfall in central Seoul I bet you didn’t know about.

Walk beneath the cherry blossoms and up another path and you’ll find metasequoia trees and then you can walk down to find Bongwonsa Temple . It’s a gorgeous spot in the spring that is one of my hidden gems.

Cherry Blossoms, Ansan Mountain, Seoul, Korea

  • Address: 170-181 Yeonhui-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul (서울시 서대문구 연희동 170-181)
  • How To Get There: I’ve put the address to the waterfall on the mountain which is a great place to start because you can see the waterfall too! Lots of buses go nearby then you just have to walk back to the stream to find the mountain. Buses that go here include: 110A, 110B, 153, 7713, 7017, 7720, 7738, 567

Anyang Stream (안양천)

Over in Mokdong, this stream is lined with cherry blossom trees that are just gorgeous and provide a great canopy to walk beneath. If you’re on the west side of the city, this might just be the best place for you. The path lined with trees is pretty long so you can spread out from the crowds and get some great photos. This is definitely a spot more for locals and not tourists so if you want a quieter spot, check it out.

If you want festival vibes, there is probably a better spot. This stream is actually home to quite a few flowering fields and gardens so keep an eye on it through out the year. You can see what to find here in this post all about flower spots in and around Seoul .

Anyang Stream, Omokgyo, Seoul, Korea

  • Address: 52 Mullae-dong 6-ga, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul (서울시 영등포구 문래동 6가 52) (NOTE: This address is for the bathroom on the stream because it’s the only spot with an address so you don’t have to go exactly to this address… just in the vicinity.)
  • How To Get There: Go to Omokgyo Subway Station and go out of exit 5. You’ll want to walk that direction toward the stream but you’ll need to go over the highway/busy road in the area.

Cherry Blossoms, Ansan Mountain, Seoul, Korea

Namsan Mountain (남산)

A popular spot throughout the year because of N Seoul Tower sitting at the top, Namsan Mountain in the spring is gorgeous and rather than taking the gondola up to the top, many people opt to walk just to enjoy the numerous cherry blossom trees. If huffing your way up doesn’t sound appealing, take the gondola up anyway and then walk beneath the trees on the way down. Either way, enjoy the flowers in this easy to get to centrally located spot. This mountain also features yellow forsythias and purple azaleas too. Win win win!

  • Address: 109 Sowol-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul (서울특별시 용산구 소월로 109)
  • How To Get There: Myeongdong Subway Station, exit 2 or 3 and then you’ll want to follow signs up to the cable car or hop in a taxi and ask them to take you up.

Seoul Children’s Grand Park (서울어린이대공원)

Children’s Grand Park is actually popular for having more than just cherry blossoms. Enter to find azaleas and tulips too. Walk through the massive park to see the flowers in numerous shades from yellows and purples to the cherry blossom pinks. The park is a great place to spend the day as there’s also a botanical garden and a zoo too.

  • Address: 216 Neungdong-ro, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul (서울특별시 광진구 능동로 216)
  • How To Get There: Children’s Grand Park Subway Station, exit 1 or 2.

Seokchon Lake (석촌호수)

Another easily accessible location to see cherry blossoms in Seoul is Seokchon Lake. The area also becomes home to the Soekchon Lake Cherry Blossom Festival (석촌호수 벚꽃축제) when the trees in are in full bloom. The beautiful manmade lakes surround the popular and fun Lotte World Amusement Park which is a great bonus to visiting these flowers in the spring.

This park is also near Seoul Sky Tower which features the tallest observatory in Korea and the tallest hotel, Signiel Hotel.   Spend the whole day or weekend in the area while enjoying the light pink hues of the cherry blossoms.

  • Festival: Dates not announced yet.
  • Address: 148 Jamsil-ro, Songpa-gu, Seoul (서울특별시 송파구 잠실로 148)
  • How To Get There: Jamsil Subway Station, exit 2 or 3 and walk straight.

There’s something about taking pictures of blooms with traditional Korean eaves in the background. The grounds of all of the five palaces in Seoul feature cherry blossoms so you really can’t go wrong choosing one.

While Gyeongbokgung Palace is the most popular, Changdeokgung Palace is also widely known as featuring the gorgeous Secret Garden and the natural views there. Want to get away from the crowds, visit the more hidden Changgyeonggung Palace which actually features the most cherry blossoms of them all or Unhyeongung Palace and if you want to see a changing of the guard ceremony and visit an art museum within a palace, don’t miss Deoksugung Palace . They’re all beautiful and even more so in the spring with the flowers.

Seoul Forest (서울숲)

Near the Brooklyn of Seoul, Seongsu-dong , Seoul Forest is pretty massive which means you can get some space and spread out within the park and see plenty of blooms. There are even deer you can feed too! Many locals will take a mat and food and enjoy a picnic in this park on spring days so why not do the same?

  • Address: 273 Ttukseom-ro, Seongdong-gu, Seoul (서울특별시 성동구 뚝섬로 273)
  • How To Get There: Seoul Forest Subway Station and take exit 3 or 4.

Where To Find Cherry Blossoms In Korea

Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival, Seoul, Korea

Anyang Art Park (안양예술공원)

The Anyang Art Park is gorgeous in the spring and is awash with cherry blossoms along the stream that sits in front of the mountain that is home to numerous beautiful artistic installations. You definitely need to go at some point and definitely NOT in the humid heat of the summer so spring is definitely the best time.

We JUST missed the cherry blossoms when we went a couple years ago, but oh the pics from others looked amazing. Take an adventure on the subway line and see what you can see!

  • Address:   131 Yesulgongwon-ro, Manan-gu, Anyang-si, Gyeonggi-do (경기도 안양시 만안구 예술공원로 131 (석수동))
  • By Subway:   Top off   the T-Money Card   and head from Seoul down the blue line to Gwanak Subway Station.   Go out exit 2 and walk toward the main road where you can see a bus stop outside near Paris Baguette.   Take bus 900 just two stops.   Get off and cross the street to find another bus stop.   Take bus 2-1 which will go just three stops and drop you off right at Anyang Art Park’s parking lot and starting point.   The buses take a total of 12 minutes but if you don’t want to switch twice and wait, getting a taxi from Gwanak Subway Station is easiest and it takes just 5 minutes and costs about W4,000.

Nami Island (남이섬)

Nami Island is easily accessible from Seoul with buses that go there daily. It’s a fun place for families, a romantic spot for couples, and even has ziplines and other fun activities for the adventurer. From season to season the island is gorgeous and spring is no different. Cherry blossoms burst into bloom and the island that was built to celebrate nature, really does just that. You can also see nearby Petite France or Garden of the Morning Calm.

  • Address:  1 Namisum-gil, Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do (강원도 춘천시 남산면 남이섬길 1)
  • How To Get There:  There are shuttle buses that make the trip back and forth between Nami Island for the day as well as other buses. Check out that guide linked above for more transportation options.

Gyeongpo, which people flock to in the summer for the gorgeous beach there, is also home to a lovely lake that is surrounded by 4.3 kilometers of cherry blossom trees. Take a trip to Gangneung this spring to see some beautiful flowering trees AND take in those ocean views. The white sand and blue waters are gorgeous and made even more appealing with the flowers in the background. The area is also home to a few popular Kdrama photo-ops, so take your time and enjoy the views.

  • Address: 514 Changhae-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do (강원도 강릉시 창해로 514)
  • How To Get There: You can take a train from Seoul out to Gyeongpo and then make your way around on your own but you can also get a taxi driver for 3 hours to take you to all the hot flowering spots. Do the further away spots with the taxi and then see the lake before you jump back onto the train.

Gangjin, Korea: Cherry blossoms, Hallie Bradley

This is definitely a hidden gem. Last year, I happened to be in the area in the spring and was just stunned by roads and roads lined with cherry blossoms. There were fields of gorgeous flowering trees and NO people in sight. It was really just amazing to see cherry blossoms without the hoards of people. You really can find cherry blossoms all over the country in the spring so just keep an eye out.

But if you want to head to Gangjin this spring , rent a car and make the trip. You’ll likely have a ton of trees all to your self! Update: I went back to the area this year (2020) and have continued finding just stunning places to visit. Don’t miss Nammireuksa Temple which is so Secret Garden-esque. So stunning in the spring.

  • Address: Gangjin, Korea
  • How To Get There: Take a bus from Central City Bus Terminal down to Gangjin. It’ll take approximately 4.5 hours.

Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival, Seoul, Korea

The Jinhae Gunhangje Festival (진해군항제) is one of the, if not THE most popular cherry blossom festivals in Korea. 360,000 cherry blossom trees burst into bloom across the city but the most popular places to take in the spring vibes are Anmingogae Hill, Jehwangsan Park, and Yeojwacheon Stream. The stream is 1.5 kilometers long and people flock here to feel as though they’re walking through a tunnel of cherry blossoms. This festival attracts more than two million visitors each year so if you’re okay with the crowds, this is definitely the place to be.

  • Address:  Area of Yeojwa-dong, Jinhae-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do (경상남도 창원시 진해구 여좌동)
  • Join A   Tour:  Jinhae gets pretty popular in the spring so it can be difficult to find a place to stay. One of the best options is to join a day trip (a long day trip). A day trip from Seoul with Trazy or this tour with Klook are great options.
  • How To Get There: Take a bus from Seoul Nambu Bus Terminal directly to Jinhae. The trip takes around four hours and costs around W25,000.

Gyeongju is a gorgeous and historic city with so much to see and in the spring it is just so so much better. The city is gorgeous in the spring with cherry blossoms but for some extra fun, the city is also hosts the Gyeongju Cherry Marathon. If you’re into running, then see the flowers as you whiz by.

  • Address: Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do
  • How To Get There: Take a train from Seoul Station to right down to Gyeongju for the easily and most convenient way to travel.

Imcheonggakgun jajeong (임청각군자정), Andong, Korea: pink Cherry Blossom trees

Andong is another historic city that is a must see whenever you can but especially in the spring. The Andong Hahoe Village is surrounded by cherry blossoms of the white fluffy sort but there are also king cherry blossoms like the pink ones pictured above which are just stunning. These are my personal favorites. Make plans to head to Andong Hahoe Village this spring!

  • Address:  Andong, Korea
  • How To Get There:  Express buses depart from both the Gangnam Express Bus Terminal and the Dong Seoul Bus Terminal (also called the East Express Bus Terminal when translated). The trip is about three hours and buses run every 30 minutes to an hour so visitors can fairly easily rock up to the terminal and hop on the next bus without an issue.

Gyeongsangnam-do is blanketed in beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring and and the most popular spot is the 10-ri Cherry Blossom Road which is also known as “marriage road”. A legend says that if lovers walk down this road holding hands when the flowers bloom, they will get married and live happily forever.

  • Address: 58 Ssanggye-ro Hwagae-myeon, Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do (경상남도 하동군 화개면 쌍계로 58)
  • How To Get There:  Take a train down to Yeousu and then you’ll need to catch a taxi for the last 20 kilometers.

If you’ll be headed to Jeju, make sure you book where you want to stay before you get there. Here’s a guide to where to stay on Jeju Island . Jeju Island is the first place in the country to burst into bloom thanks to being the southernmost place in the country. Spots to check out flowers on Jeju include the Jeju Sports Complex and in downtown Seogwipo which is also where you can see the King Cherry Tree which has the largest petals of all the cherry trees. The Jeju King Cherry Blossom Festival (제주 왕벚꽃축제) might just be the most beautiful thing to see in the spring.

  • Address: Jeju, Korea
  • How To Get There: To get to Jeju Island, you’ll likely fly in from Gimpo Airport or Incheon Airport on mainland Korea down to Jeju International Airport.   Though if you’re in the region, you could fly in from another airport as well.   Check out   Skyscanner.com   for the best rates. Then, you’ll want to rent a car. Renting a car  does not have to be a hassle.   If you don’t want to go directly with a local shop,   check out Klook   which offers a great deal on rental cars and works really well for tourists.   It’s fast and efficient and you’ll land and be on the road in no time. If you won’t be renting a car, make sure to plan your airport transfer. If you’re headed somewhere in  Jeju City, you can book a transfer here .

Wolmi Island, Incheon, Korea

Jayu Park that sits just above Incheon’s Chinatown, the only official Chinatown in the country, has some gorgeous cherry blossoms trees in the spring and it’s an ideal location if you want to see flowers and plenty more. You can easily visit Chinatown or go to nearby Songwol-dong Fairytale Village.

  • Address: 14 Chinatown-ro 52beon-gil, Jung-gu, Incheon (인천광역시 중구 차이나타운로52번길 14)
  • How To Get There: Incheon Subway Station, exit 1. Cross the street and you’ll see Chinatown.

Guide to cherry blossom season in Japan

March 19, 2024

From March to April every year, millions head to Japan to see their famed cherry trees shower the landscape in pink and white petals

The annual blooming of sakura (cherry blossom) trees in Japan is a sacred occurrence that has been celebrated for over 1,000 years. While its origins are somewhat disputed, with some sources pointing to the 3rd century and others to the 9th, it’s generally agreed that the earliest hanami (flower viewing) parties were reserved for imperial aristocrats and later, the samurai class. By the turn of the 17th century, cherry blossom season was widely celebrated by ordinary folk and today, millions of locals and international visitors flock to Japan in March and April to see the blooms and join in the sakura festivities.

Why is cherry blossom season such a big deal in Japan?

These days, tourists visit Japan during sakura season to see the country’s most famous sights showered in delicate petals. But for the Japanese, the season has a much deeper significance. In addition to being appreciated for its splendid appearance, it has also come to symbolise the ephemeral nature of life and its fleeting beauty.

In Japan, Shinto and Buddhism are the dominant religions, with many people identifying as both. While the beliefs differ in some areas, many of the main ideas are shared between Shintoists and Buddhists, including the worship of nature and life’s impermanence. The short-lived bloom of sakura embodies this principle; it is a stunning yet temporary sight that, at the height of its beauty, quickly vanishes.

When do the cherry trees bloom?

Cherry blossom season is an annual event that occurs every spring, however the exact dates of the bloom vary from year to year, based on weather conditions. A warm spring often leads to early kaika (flowering), while cold temperatures might lead to late blooms. The one thing that’s guaranteed is the pattern of blooming, with the sakura zensen (cherry blossom front) starting in the southern islands near the beginning of the year and heading north, as late as May. For visitors wanting to see the deciduous trees flower in Japan’s most popular cities, Kyoto and Tokyo typically bloom in the last week of March and first two of April.

As the cherry blossom season is big business in Japan, its prediction has become a suitably grand affair, involving scientists, mathematic equations and many of the country’s leading meteorologists. For those wanting up-to-date information, the Sakura Navi app – developed by the Japan Meteorological Corporation – allows people to track the cherry blossom zensen in real time, alerts them when they’re near a viewing spot and contains blooming forecasts for the entire country.

Best place to view the cherry blossoms?

Traverse Japan in early April and you’re in with a great chance of seeing cherry trees in bloom, however the best spot to bask in their beauty requires a detour. Yoshino, a relatively quiet town east of Osaka, explodes in population when the sakura zensen arrives. The town has long been one of the most popular to visit during spring as it’s home to 30,000 cherry blossom trees, which blanket the mountainous region in pink and white.

In Tokyo , there are many places to spot sakura. Head to Chiyoda in central Tokyo, where hundreds of sakura trees line the edge of the Chidorigafuchi Moat, beside the imperial palace. Those looking for a perspective away from the crowds should rent a boat and paddle down the waterway.

Just as Kyoto is known for its beautiful temples and shrines, it’s also renowned for its blossom displays. Ditch the crowds at Kiyomizu-dera and set up your own hanami on the sakura-lined banks of the Kamo-gawa River, or visit the often-overlooked Konkai Komyo-ji Temple.

Which events take place during cherry blossom season?

Japanese people love a celebration, with hundreds of thousands of matsuri (festivals) taking place around the country every year. From giving thanks, to praying for a good harvest, there’s a festival to commemorate any occasion and when March arrives, the matsuris turn their focus to all things pink and floral.

Travel anywhere with flowering sakura trees and you’re bound to find people partaking in hanami celebrations, so grab a bento box and set up camp under a blossoming tree to bask in the beauty of the season. If you’re interested in a larger event, Tokyo’s Ueno Park hosts one of Japan’s largest cherry blossom festivals. With over 1,000 trees, food stalls and night-time illumination, it’s no wonder the park is a popular hanami spot for locals and visitors alike.

What special treats are available during cherry blossom season?

Japanese food is heavily centred around the seasons, with offerings dependant on fresh produce and seasonal flavours. The arrival of spring brings all manner of sakura-flavoured treats, from Kit Kats to soft-serve ice cream and yatsuhashi (a chewy rice flour triangle filled with sweet paste).

For some delicious sakura-flavoured wagashi (Japanese sweets), head to the iconic yet tiny Gion Manju Factory (103 Ooidecho, Sanjo Shirakawabashi-dori Nishi-iru, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture) in the centre of Kyoto, which has been serving up mochi (rice cakes), dango (rice dumplings on a skewer) and other traditional treats for almost 200 years.
