About brand new.

Brand New is an American rock band from Long Island, New York. Formed in 2000, the band consists of Jesse Lacey (vocals, guitar), Vincent Accardi (guitar, vocals), Garrett Tierney (bass guitar, vocals), and Brian Lane (drums, percussion); they are joined by Benjamin Homola (percussion) and Kevin Devine (guitar, vocals) for their live performances. From 2005 until 2013 the band also included Derrick Sherman (guitar, backing vocals, keyboards). In the late 1990s, Jesse Lacey, Garrett Tierney and Brian Lane were all members of the band The Rookie Lot. They eventually split off from the other members of the group, and in 2000 formed Brand New in Merrick, New York. The band signed to Triple Crown Records and in 2001 released their debut studio album, Your Favorite Weapon. Their second album, Deja Entendu, was released in 2003 and marked a stylistic change for the band, one that garnered an extremely positive critical reception. The album's first two singles, "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and "Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades", both received airplay on MTV2 and Fuse TV, entering the top 40 on the United Kingdom Singles Chart. Deja Entendu was eventually certified gold in the United States. Brand New moved to Interscope Records and released the critically acclaimed The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me in 2006. "Jesus Christ" became their highest charting single in the US, peaking at number 30 on the Alternative Songs chart. In March 2008, the band started their own record label, named Procrastinate! Music Traitors. Their fourth album, Daisy, was released in 2009 and became their highest charting album in the US, reaching number six on the Billboard 200. The band have been working on new material for some time, releasing new single "Mene" in April 2015 followed by "I Am a Nightmare" a year later in May 2016. Recent T-shirt designs and lyric book inserts hint at the band possibly breaking up in 2018. On August 17, 2017, the band released their fifth album Science Fiction, two days after announcing its release on vinyl, to critical acclaim and commercial success, becoming Brand New's first number-one album on the Billboard 200.

Brand New’s Current Tour Is The Intense And Triumphant Farewell Their Fans Deserve

Corbin Reiff

Nobody moves. The cavernous Aragon Ballroom in Chicago is a pitch black void and inside, 5,000 Brand New fans hardly breathe as a large metal fence descends from the rafters. Out of the shadows, six figures wander out onto the elevated stage to the thrill of their mesmerized acolytes. A low, instrumental rumble cuts through the expectant silence, followed by singer Jesse Lacey’s unmistakable croon: “It’s where you live, but you don’t know how it’s built.”

Even as the audience sings along, pouring all they have into every word of the first song of the show, “Lit Me Up,” they remain absolutely still. You can’t even see the band from behind the massive wall of steel and flaming LED lights, but hardly anyone shifts this way or that to get a better look. We stand as one, totally transfixed by the words and the foreboding music. It’s actually incredible. All of us have fallen deep under Brand New’s spell. All of us are yearning to open our hearts and say goodbye.

Brand New have made several allusions over the past few years that they have no intention in carrying on past 2018. Every show, every action they take could be their last, and those who’ve followed them since the beginning, back around the turn of this century, are sharing in their last act with an almost defiant sense of celebration. If you’re holding onto a ticket to their current tour expecting to partake in a funeral, you’ll almost certainly leave disappointed. Brand New seem more intent on giving their devoted following the intense, and triumphant wake that they deserve.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Live Nation IL (@livenationil)

Brand New is the kind of band who inspires almost cultish-levels of devotion. Their infrequent album release schedule combined with the fact that they’ve almost totally removed themselves from the promotional side of the business, rarely, if ever granting interviews, has caused to create this swirl of mystery around themselves that some find patently irresistible. It doesn’t hurt the cause that their discography is jammed with genre-defining, catharsis-rendering, emo masterpieces like Deja Entendu and The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me .

The depth of passion that Brand New inspires was on full display throughout the 90-minute set. Men and women alike belted out the choruses to cherished favorite tracks like their very lives depended on it. Crowd-surfers were frequent. Right in front of me, a girl with a shaved head burst into tears and began sobbing just as the guys onstage broke into the fourth song of the night “You Won’t Know.” Her friend wrapped a consoling arm around her and asked, “Are you okay?” She sniffled and responded “Not really.” Next to her a large, tough looking dude looked over and offered, reassuringly “It’s a totally reasonable reaction.” The girl glanced at him and smiled. “It’s been 16 years for me,” she replied while drying her eyes. “16 years,” she repeated.

Here’s where I make my confession. Prior to 2017, I wasn’t really all that into Brand New. I was aware of them in high school and beyond sure, but while so many of my peers were scrawling the lyrics to “The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows” on their arms in sharpie, I was simply in to other things. Some stuff just kind of falls through the cracks, what can I say?

Then, a couple of months back they unveiled what is purportedly their last album Science Fiction . I was intrigued, but waited a weekend before giving it a proper listen and then, ho-ly sh*t! I was hooked. From the disconcerting tape recordings, the slow-simmering melodies, the laconic vocal delivery on the verses, the bombastic throat-shredding fury through the choruses, and the twisted melange of unsettling imagery, I fell deep in the throes of a full-blown love affair. At the time of my writing this, there’s no doubt in my mind that Science Fiction is the absolute, number-one, best rock record of the year. It suddenly became extremely important for me to see them before the opportunity slipped away forever.

Fortunately, while Brand New paid a good amount of attention to some of their most-beloved older material throughout the show, songs like “Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades” and “Jesus” for example, almost half the set was filled out by tracks off Science Fiction. This suited me just fine. I actually admired the gumption it takes to stack the deck so heavily toward newer material at this stage in the game. The crowd rewarded their efforts by going nearly word-for-word on newer cuts like “137,” “Can’t Get It Out,” and “Out Of Mana.” The 11th song of the night, “In The Water” drew a particularly enthusiastic response.

Lacey made mention of the finality surrounding the show during one of the few times he deigned to address the crowd. While introducing the “Same Logic/Teeth,” he revealed the purpose behind it all, saying that “It’s pretty freeing that this will probably be one of our last pieces of music.” There were no tears then. Everyone cheered and the band blasted us into another dimension one more time.

Farewell Brand New. I hardly knew ye.

Formed in London, UK, Brand New Heavies are a pioneering jazz collective who helped create the sound of acid jazz, fusing funk, soul and hip hop production to create their unique sound.

Initially known as Brother International, the band began as an instrumental acid-jazz group in 1985, changing their name to Brand New Heavies after gaining their first record contract. The band were quick to gain a cult following, finding many fans in the burgeoning London club scene. Initially formed of Jan Kincaid (drums/keyboards), Simon Bartholomew (guitars) and Andrew Levy (bass/keyboards), the band soon added a brass section as well as vocalist Jay Ella Ruth.

The band signed with indie label, Acid Jazz, for their self-titled debut album, which garnered widespread critical acclaim upon its release. The band also gained a US distribution deal with Delicious Vinyl, with whom they re-recorded their debut for a US release. Jay Ella Ruth also left the group at this time, with N’dea Davenport brought in instead. Brand New Heavies found hits in the UK with “Dream Come True” and “Stay This Way,” but it was with “Never Stop” that the Heavies broke the US market, becoming the first group to break into the American R&B Chart since Soul II Soul’s success.

After collaborating with Q-Tip and MC Sech, the Brand New Heavies were inspired to incorporate more hip hop influences into their music, evident in their next album, “Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1.” The album brought in Main Source, Gang Starr, Grand Puba and The Pharcyde to feature on the 1992 recording, which peaked at 38 in the UK and 139 in the US.

Success continued for the Heavies with 1994’s “Brother Sister,” which went Platinum in the UK. Davenport left the group to pursue a solo career, with singer Siedah Garrett taking over vocal responsibilities, with her first feature with the band being on 1997’s “Shelter.”

After two successful greatest hits albums, released on both sides of the atlantic, Davenport decided to reunite with the group, joining them early in 2006. “Get Used To It” arrived a year later, after which they embarked on an extensive tour across the UK and Europe. The band returned to their instrumental roots with 2011’s “Dunk Your Trunk,” before once again uniting with N’Dea Davenport, as well as new vocalist Dawn Joseph, for 2013’s “Forward.” Joseph became the group’s sole vocalist on their 2014 release, “Sweet Freaks,” their first for Earmusic.

Live reviews

Acid jazz and punk outfit The Brand New Heavies are the epitome of eccentric and may be described as a small piece of London history. They soon approach the thirtieth anniversary of the band's formation and within that time they have achieved an awful lot yet as they work mainly underground you probably won't have heard about it unless you are in tune with Ealing's bustling music scene.

They have been consistently releasing albums although only two made any real impact on the UK charts, luckily for fans tonight's setlist is a collation of all their music and not just those albums. There is a great melange of material on offer including 'Midnight at the Oasis' and 'Dream On Dreamer' and a selection of other hits. The show is as eccentric as you would imagine with great costumes and theatrical performances from all four members. Your eyes are not sure where to look during the performance but this is part of the brilliance as it is so absorbing you leave feeling as though you have just entered an alternative world if only for a couple of hours.

I have to say that the Brand New Heavies do not produce my favorite style of music but I gave it a chance when a friend gave me some tickets. The venue that the gig was held in was awesome and I really enjoyed some of the new music I never heard before. I can only say one word from my experience and that it was awesome.

Some of the highlights for me were Jan Kincaid's lead vocals on their track Heaven and Dawn Joseph on their song Sometimes. What I came to learn as well is that this band are performers and they give a great performance for the money paid to buy the ticket. I went home after the gig and went and gave a listen to more of their songs and everything I really enjoyed a lot.

Go check them out because it will be one of the best experiences of your life. I would say if you have never heard of the band give them a listen before buying a ticket because their style of music is not for everyone. If you do end up liking their music go see a show when they come to a town near you because you will not be disappointed one bit.

Fantastic evening! The Heavies were on great form, and they didn't let a faulty guitar stop them.

They played all the classics and got the crowd moving to the grooves. The Clapham Grand was a great venue; good acoustics (thought at points deafening) and nice space for dancing.

My faves were 'Dream On Dreamer/Midnight at the Oasis', 'Sometimes', 'Spend Some Time', 'You Are The Universe' and 'Dream Come True'. The last two were played at the very end, and it was a fitting end to a brilliant gig.

All in all, a solid 9/10!

I have wanted to see the BNH for a while now since I'd seen them touring.

My mate introduced me to their music when we were at college together years ago.

Thoroughly enjoyed the gig, a mix of greatest hits and songs off the new album. They played to the crowd brilliantly and fed off the positive vibe.

I am so glad we went and hope to get the chance to see them again.

Absolutely one of best shows I ever seen in my 35 yrs of concert going. N'Dea Davenport's homecoming to ATL. She killed it! No gimmicks, costume changes or light show, just the band and a stage. Buckhead Theater perfect quaint venue. Must see.

Brand New Band Controversy & Jesse Lacey Allegations Explained

Jesse Lacey in Brand New band

After more than half a decade, there has still not been much resolution when it comes to the controversy surrounding the band Brand New and the allegations of lead singer Jesse Lacey.

For much of the 2000s, Brand New was a staple of the pop-punk and emo scene, coming out of Long Island, New York to great success.

However, after five full-length albums and years of touring, the group was suddenly disbanded in 2017 following scathing headlines surrounding the band members.

Breaking Down the Brand New and Jesse Lacey Controversy

Jesse Lacey in Brand New music video

Brand New shocked the music world back in 2017, seemingly breaking up and ending one of the most beloved runs in pop-punk history.

This came following the release of their 2017 album Science Fiction . After the LP's release, touring band member Kevin Devine announced via Facebook he would be taking a break from Brand New.

He explained he would "be quieting down the KD world for a while" and he was "tak[ing] stock & decid[ing] what comes next:"

"The reason for saying anything in public is to share that I’ll be quieting down the KD world for a while. There will still be a handful of odd shows here & there, and a few non-tour- or proper-record-related projects, but it feels good to do something else, take stock & decide what comes next, and “go away” a bit in some core sense. That’s it. Thanks as always & be good to each other - these are scary, brutal, psychedelic times, but you’re not alone."

The departure of the guitarist was the first public indication that the end was coming for the fan-favorite musical act.

Then in October 2017, during the Science Fiction tour, lead singer Jesse Lacey revealed, "We’re gonna be a band for about 14 more months," officially putting a timeframe on when Brand New was going to go their separate ways (per NME ):

“We’re gonna be a band for about 14 more months, so thank you so much for being here tonight.”

The group never reached that 14-month window though, as things came crashing down in late 2017.

On November 10, 2017, news broke of allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor being levied at Brand new frontman Jesse Lacey.

Coming by way of a public Facebook post, the accusations being made said Lacey has "solicited nudes from [the poster] starting when [she] was 15 and he was 24" (via UPROXX ):

"YES. He solicited nudes from me starting when I was 15 and he was 24. Manipulated the hell out of me, demanded specific poses/settings/clothing, demeaned me, and made it clear that my sexuality was the only thing I had to offer. He knew what he was doing was sh*tty so he wouldn’t touch me until I was 19. I should’ve known better by then, but he had screwed me up so much psychologically that all I wanted was his approval. It fucked me up to the point that I STILL have nightmares and wakeup in a sweat. I still breakdown and have panic attacks when people play Brand New in a bar. JESSE LACEY IS A PIECE OF SH*T."

This prompted several other women to come forward describing that they too had allegedly been groomed by Lacey.

Soon after the allegations came to light, Martha, the band supporting Brand New on their Science Fiction tour pulled out of the remaining European dates, with the band officially postponing the rest of the tour.

Lacey eventually issued an apology, positing he was "selfish, narcissistic, and insensitive in [his] past" (via NPR ):

"I was selfish, narcissistic, and insensitive in my past, and there are a number of people who have had to shoulder the burden of my failures. I apologize for the hurt I have caused, and hope to be able to take the correct actions to earn forgiveness and trust."

He continued, that he was "sorry for how [he has] hurt people, mistreated them, lied, and cheated:"

"I am sorry for how I have hurt people, mistreated them, lied, and cheated. I am sorry for ignoring the way in which my position, status, and power as a member of a band affected the way people viewed me or their approach to their interactions with me. And I am sorry for how often I have not afforded women the respect, support, or honesty that they deserved."

Since these allegations came to light, Brand New has never returned to the stage together. They continue to neither confirm nor deny an official breakup.

Will Brand New Ever Get Back Together?

As it currently stands, a Brand New reunion seems highly unlikely due to all the controversy surrounding the group.

In the court of public opinion, Jesse Lacey is still looked poorly upon for the allegations levied against him, and a resolution surrounding that situation still has - at least publicly - not come to light.

Since their last show in 2017, multiple attempts have been made to bring the group back together on stage in some capacity, but it has yet to happen.

In 2021, John D'Esposito, the man behind the Bamboozle musical festival, revealed on an appearance on The Wolff Den podcast that he had reached out to members of the band about potentially coming back to the stage as a part of the 2023 festival lineup.

However, that did not happen as the band declined D'Esposito's request.

The band's reputation as one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed emo acts of all time continues, but it is hard to deny just how much the allegations against Lacey and how everything ended with the group have negatively impacted Brand New's legacy.

In a world full of musical acts going on hiatus and coming back for a grand return (i.e. Paramore , Sum 41, and Blink 182), a Brand New reunion does not look like it has even a remote chance of being on the cards.

Jesse Lacey, singer of the Long Island-born band Brand New, performs in 2007. The singer apologized for past episodes of sexual misconduct in a statement over the weekend.

Updated 8:41 a.m., Tue., Nov. 14.

The band Brand New is postponing its comeback tour of the U.K. following accusations of sexual misconduct against its singer, Jesse Lacey, made public last week on social media.

In a since-deleted thread on Facebook (a request for comment from that poster wasn't immediately returned) — accurate excerpts from which were posted by culture blog Uproxx — a woman accused Brand New singer Jesse Lacey of soliciting nude photographs from her when she was 15 years old, and of having masturbated while video chatting with her (she did not clarify her age at the time of the Skype conversation).

Monday evening, Pitchfork published accounts from two women – one the initial accuser in that now-deleted Facebook post – who both described Lacey as having first cultivated relationships with them online while they were minors. The relationships described, spanning years, included both sharing nude pictures of themselves and of Lacey masturbating while video chatting. A request for further comment from a representative for Brand New was not immediately returned, nor were repeated requests for further clarification on the initial Facebook post accusing Lacey.

Lacey responded over the weekend with a blanket apology for his behavior, without admitting to any specific allegations. "I was selfish, narcissistic, and insensitive in my past, and there are a number of people who have had to shoulder the burden of my failures. I apologize for the hurt I have caused, and hope to be able to take the correct actions to earn forgiveness and trust," he wrote .

Lacey's statement arrives on the heels of comedian Louis C.K.'s admission of guilt and statement of contrition over his own history of sexual assaults. "There is nothing about this that I forgive myself for," C.K. wrote in a statement. "And I have to reconcile it with who I am. Which is nothing compared to the task I left them with." C.K.'s confirmation of The New York Times ' investigation was part of a broad wave of sexual misconduct allegations against many, including former NPR news executive Mike Oreskes, in what is being commonly referred to as a "post-Weinstein" moment, in reference to the disgraced Hollywood mogul.

Kevin Devine, a former touring guitarist for Brand New, posted a statement of his own, writing that he had "not heard the story prior to it being made public yesterday. I'm heartbroken for her and for every person who absorbs and subsequently has to figure out how to live with this type of trauma. We all need to do a lot better, myself very much included." Devine went on to cite his own struggles with addiction, and long-term sobriety, as offering a possible path to similar rehabilitation for Lacey.

The accusations and Lacey's statement also prompted the group Martha to recuse itself from Brand New's tour: "We have decided to pull out of the brand new shows. Support survivors always," the band wrote on Twitter.

Brand New emerged from Long Island, N.Y. in 2001 with Your Favorite Weapon , and broke an eight-year hiatus this past August with the release of Science Fiction . That latest record propelled the group to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart, one of just three guitar-reliant bands this year to do so, according to Billboard , and drew glowing reviews from music critics — including one published by NPR Music .

Requests for further comment from Brand New's publicist were not returned.

Watch Pulp premiere new song Spike Island on the opening night of their American tour

Could a new Pulp album be on the way? Speculation grows after the band debut a fourth unreleased song live

Pulp, live

Pulp kicked off their North American tour last night, Sunday, September 8, at Chicago's legendary Aragon Ballroom, and debuted a brand new song, Spike Island .

Jarvis Cocker's band are playing their first shows in the US and Canada since 2012. The Sheffield group have premiered a number of unreleased songs since their reunion, including A Sunset (co-written with fellow Yorkshireman Richard Hawley), Hymn Of The North (debuted at Sheffield Arena on July 15, 2023) and Background Noise , performed live for the first time at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico last November, during the Corona Capital Festival.

There has been no official confirmation that the band are going to record new material, although Cocker is reported to have told a fan in East London that his band were "back in the studio."

Introducing Spike Island , famously the scene of a much-hyped Stone Roses gig in 1990, Cocker said, “What shall I say about it? You’ll just have to make up your own mind about it. It’s called Spike Island and it sounds very much like this...”

Black Pumas delight at Surly Festival Field

Eric Burton of Black Pumas performed at Surly Brewing Festival Field on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Thanks for liking this song! We have added it to a personal playlist for you.

September 12, 2024

“Our first show here — at the Turf Club [in 2018] — was off the chain,” frontman Eric Burton of Black Pumas told the Twin Cities audience shortly after stepping onstage Wednesday night in Minneapolis. “This place elevates our music to another dimension.”

Playing outdoors at Surly Festival Field, Black Pumas proceeded to do exactly what Burton described.

Opening their set with the song “Fire,” the band’s robust sound poured out over the audience, accompanied by a swirl of light and fog. The upstage scrim featuring the Black Pumas’ iconic mirrored puma faces burst to life through illuminated eyes and teeth. It resembled the entrance to a funhouse, visually echoing Burton’s words of entering a new dimension. Over 90 minutes, this stunning visual display continued to morph and fascinate as Black Pumas delivered a nearly nonstop stream of their irresistible brand of rock ‘n’ roll and R&B.

A resplendent half-moon hung over Minneapolis, adding further set dressing to songs like “Black Moon Rising,” or to “Little Angel” as Burton crooned the lyric, “In the sea of the evening / As the moon comes to play…”

Dreamy and transporting as the music was, Burton kept engaging with the audience throughout the show. He slyly worked the name “Minneapolis” into song lyrics, directed handclaps, and led choreography, sing-alongs, and calls-and-responses. During “Know You Better,” Burton invited everyone in the audience to turn to the person on their right and on their left to ask each person’s favorite color, not only reflecting the song’s lyrics but also, as Burton put it, to build “just a little bit of community.”

It helped that there was a powerful communal feeling already in place. Burton asked the crowd, “Who’s been with us since the first album?” resulting in a collective whoop as a forest of arms filled the air. Taking in this response from the Minneapolis audience, Burton mused, “This feels like a second home.”

(Overheard before the show, a Black Pumas fan who had traveled to Texas to see the band compared notes and T-shirts with a couple who had traveled to Amsterdam for a Black Pumas concert.)

the band black pumas performing on outdoor stage at night

Although Burton is every bit the frontman, Black Pumas comprise a hardworking roster of musicians. The band Wednesday evening included Black Pumas cofounder and creative partner Adrian Quesada on guitar; backing vocalists Angela Miller and Lauren Cervantes; keyboardist JaRon Marshall; bassist Brendan Bond; drummer Stephen Bidwell; and auxiliary percussionist and backing vocalist Terin Ector. Pausing only when they could simply to hydrate between songs, this band poured their whole selves into the performance.

If Black Pumas had just called it a night after concluding their main set with a passionate rendition of “Colors” (off their 2019 self-titled debut album), it’s hard to imagine anyone at Surly would have gone home disappointed. But after a few minutes of nonstop cheering and applause, Burton returned to stage to perform a solo cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car.” In a particularly poignant moment, after Burton sang the lyrics, “I said, ‘Somebody's got to take care of him’ / So I quit school and that's what I did,” he breathed softly an interstitial remark, “I know the feeling … I know the feeling.” As a student, Burton left college in New Mexico to return to California to take care of his mother as she faced health issues.

ric wilson and his band performing on stage

Opening Wednesday’s show was Chicago rapper and activist Ric Wilson, who got the audience moving to his melodic, jazz-inflected brand of hip-hop. Foreshadowing Burton’s penchant for interaction, Wilson interfaced by looking out into the crowd, constantly making eye contact with people, leading clapping and dancing, and at one point even raising his glass and saying, “Hey Minnesota, let’s give a toast to Tim Walz!” Songs by Wilson that connected particularly well with the audience included “Hang Loose,” “Move Like This,” and “Sinner,” the latter anchored by a reggae beat.

Black Pumas concluded their encore and their show with an extended, jam version of “Rock and Roll,” the final track on 2023’s Chronicles of a Diamond . Near the song’s conclusion, Burton leaped over the barrier and ran up the center of the audience giving high-fives and never ceasing from singing the “Rock and Roll” refrain. He returned to stage for a few more stanzas and dance moves, his golden dreadlocks whipping joyously, then casually strode offstage, leaving the band to soak in the applause as they played the final measures of the song.

On a visit to The Current earlier Wednesday, Eric Burton told host Jessica Paxton, “Creating and performing is what I absolutely love to do.” For anyone in attendance at Surly Festival Field on Wednesday night, Burton and his bandmates brought those words to abundant life.

Frankie Beverly, Frontman of the Soul Group Maze, Is Dead at 77

A consistent hitmaker on the R&B charts for almost 50 years, he had announced just this year that he would be retiring.

Frankie Beverly, dressed all in white and wearing a white cap, stands on a stage with both arms extended and a microphone in his right hand.

By Derrick Bryson Taylor and Richard Sandomir

Frankie Beverly, the lead singer and songwriter of the soul and funk band Maze, whose songs, including “Golden Time of Day,” “Joy and Pain” and “ Happy Feelin’s,” provided the soundtrack to countless summer cookouts and family reunions for more than five decades, died on Tuesday. He was 77.

His death was announced in a statement by his family on his Instagram account . The statement did not say where he died or cite a cause.

“He lived his life with pure soul, as one would say, and for us, no one did it better,” the statement said. “He lived for his music, family and friends.”

Mr. Beverly had announced a farewell tour this year with a handful of dates. He had said that he would retire after going on the road one last time.

“Thank you so much for the support given to me for over 50 years as I pass on the lead vocalist torch to Tony Lindsay,” Mr. Beverly said in a statement to Billboard at the time. “The band will continue on as Maze Honoring Frankie Beverly. It’s been a great ride through the decades. Let the music of my legacy continue.”

With his smooth baritone, Mr. Beverly led Maze to success on the R&B charts and Black radio. But the band did not have a lot of crossover pop success.

“Frankie Beverly may be the biggest R&B star you never heard of,” J.D. Considine, the Baltimore Sun music critic, wrote in 1994.

That did not seem to bother him much.

“Yeah, I wish more people did know who I was,” he told Mr. Considine, “but if it’s at the expense of me giving up this thing we have, then I just have to wait until they find out. ’Cause whatever we have, whatever this thing is that we seem to have a part of, it’s a cult kind of thing.”

Maze placed 29 songs on Billboard’s R&B singles chart (now called Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs), including nine in the Top 10, and 14 albums on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, two of which reached No. 1. Four of its singles and 10 of its albums also made the Billboard pop charts.

It would be difficult to count the number of artists who have cited Mr. Beverly’s music as inspiration or sampled from his ever-expanding playbook of infectious melodies and harmonies. Many have covered his work, some with more fanfare than others. His 1978 song “I Need You” was sampled in “Hustler’s Ambition” by 50 Cent, “Talk to Em” by Young Jeezy and “I Need U” by Lil Boosie and Webbie.

And Mr. Beverly’s song “Before I Let Go,” though not a big hit, was covered by Beyoncé on her live album “Homecoming” in 2019. In the New York Times podcast “Still Processing,” with Wesley Morris and Jenna Wortham, the song was described in 2021 as having “a unique ability to gather and galvanize,” becoming “a unifying Black anthem and an unfailing source of joy.”

Howard Stanley Beverly was born on Dec. 6, 1946, in Philadelphia. His father was a truck driver, and his mother ran the household.

He was influenced as a child by the music he heard in church, by R&B singers like Sam Cooke and Lloyd Price, and by the doo-wop group Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.

“I was so blown away by Frankie that I changed my own name — my birth name is Howard!” he was quoted as saying in an online biography . “But after I heard Frankie and the guys, I was totally bitten.”

As a 12-year-old, he said, he toured the East Coast for about a year with the Silhouettes (who had a No. 1 hit with “Get a Job” in 1958) after they heard he could sing like Mr. Lymon. He then formed a few doo-wop groups of his own and recorded for one of the early record labels of the songwriter and producer Kenneth Gamble — who, with his partner, Leon Huff, would help create the sound known as Philly Soul.

Mr. Beverly transformed his group Butlers from a traditional vocal harmony ensemble into Raw Soul, which bore the influence of Sly and the Family Stone’s adventurous fusion of soul, rock and funk.

He and the other members of Raw Soul moved to San Francisco in 1972, but they initially had trouble finding success.

“We were going through hell,” Mr. Beverly told The St. Louis Post-Dispatch n 1978. “San Francisco was no Disneyland. It was real, with real hurts and heartaches. We didn’t have any bread and we were out in the street.”

They did manage to get booked at a few small clubs; at one of them, Marvin Gaye’s sister-in-law saw them perform and alerted Mr. Gaye to their talent. He persuaded them to change their name, took them out on tour in 1976 as an opening act and helped them get a deal with Capitol Records.

“He loved me like a little brother,” Mr. Beverly said of Mr. Gaye in the online biography, “and certainly working with him helped bring our demos back to life.”

The renamed band’s first album, “Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly,” was released in 1977. It was the first of nine albums by the group to be certified gold, including the two-disc “Anthology” (1996).

Information about survivors was not immediately available.

In 2009, when they closed the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans for the 15th straight year, Ben Ratliff of The Times described the experience of listening to Maze:

“The band’s shows are rehearsed rituals, working up to a rare and special audience feeling: deep, sentient serenity, not the usual kind of lose-yourself pop catharsis. It’s done by repetitive funk in slow to medium tempos, without a lot of instrumental flexing; moderation is everywhere.”

As for Mr. Beverly, he added: “His voice was half-scorched, and some of the usual traces of Donny Hathaway and Sam Cooke weren’t coming through. But he managed by keeping it in the middle register and by adding small vocal gestures to the rhythm cycles — percussive uh-uhs and dibba-dibbas, gospel grunts.

“His lyrics are about joy and desire, but he works realism, as well as a horror of hurting anyone, into his euphoria.”

KORN changed the world with the release of their self-titled debut album in 1994. It was a record that would pioneer a genre, and blur others-leading into a larger cultural movement. Since forming, KORN has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, collected two Grammys , toured the world countless times, and set many records in the process that will likely never be surpassed. KORN has continued to push the limits of the rock, alternative and metal genres, while remaining a pillar of influence for legions of fans, and generations of artists around the globe.

The level of KORN 's reach transcends accolades and platinum certifications. They are "a genuine movement in a way bands cannot be now," attests The Ringer . They represent a new archetype and radical innovation, their ability to transcend genre makes barriers seem irrelevant.

In a March 2024 interview with the WSOU 89.5 FM radio station, KORN guitarist Brian "Head" Welch spoke about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the follow-up to the band's 2022 album "Requiem" . He said: "Well, I'll just say, yes, we are passionately and intensely working on new music. We're a little bit behind. We've been really digging deep into sounds and tones and miking techniques and just really focusing on every aspect of just the miking and the sonic levels of everything because… I love the last few records we've done in the last 10 years, but I think — I just have something in me that thinks we could beat the tones. I love the songs that we've done, but tone-wise I feel like we can beat it. So we're spending a lot more time on this new music, we're spending a lot more money [ chuckles ], and we don't have any record label involved, so it's all coming from us. And we really want to dissect our sound and remember where we came from and how we did it back then. And having a vintage KORN feel with a modern twist — sonically, I'm talking about. So it's very intense. The songs are amazing. I'm very proud of it. I feel like we are closer than we've ever been in the studio. And Jonathan [ Davis , KORN singer] has been there every day."

According to Welch , he and his KORN bandmates are working on new music "off and on. We'll work for — I don't know — a couple of weeks. Then I won't see [ Jonathan ] for a month or two," he explained. "But it's starting to pick up now because we wanna put new music out. We're a little bit behind, but we're very proud of what we're doing. And we can't wait for people to hear it."

Regarding the musical direction of the new KORN material, Brian said: "I think it's the best and heaviest KORN stuff in years. And I think it's gonna be raw and just kind of more basic, as far as sound and recording and everything. I don't wanna give it all away, but we're just very, very pleased with where we're at right now."

Welch — who rejoined KORN more than a decade ago, eight years after leaving the band and at the same time announcing that he kicked his addictions to drugs and alcohol by becoming a born-again Christian — also clarified that he and the rest of KORN "haven't started recording" the band's next album "yet, but we're very passionately heading toward that direction. And we can't wait for everybody to hear it."

KORN bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu announced in June 2021 that he would sit out the band's tour in order to "heal" after "falling back" on some of his "bad habits." He has since been replaced on the road by SUICIDAL TENDENCIES bassist Roberto "Ra" Díaz .

Released in February 2022, "Requiem" , which was produced by Chris Collier and KORN , entered Billboard 's Hard Rock Albums chart at No. 1. The band sold 23,000 equivalent album units in the February 4-10, 2022 tracking week, according to Billboard . Of that sum, 20,000 units were from album sales. "Requiem" also landed at No. 2 on the Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts. On the all-format Billboard 200, it arrived at No. 14.

Despite the fact that he hasn't performed with his KORN bandmates for more than three years, Fieldy did play on "Requiem" .
