Concert Review: The Eels: Lockdown Hurricane 2023 Tour

Life is hard, And so am I You’d better give me something, So I don’t die

The Eels is an American rock band known for their distinctive sound and introspective lyrics. The band was formed in 1995 by singer-songwriter Mark Oliver Everett, commonly known as E, who is the only constant member throughout the group’s history.

The Eels’ music spans a variety of genres, including alternative rock, indie rock, and folk rock, and they have gained a dedicated following over the years. The show I saw was the last of the Lockdown Hurricane 2023 Tour which had been postponed due to Covid. The opener was a rapper (I don’t like rap at all) that I hated.

He may have been good at what he does but I thought it was horrible. Next up was Puddles Pity Party starring Puddles (Mike Geier). The 6 foot-8-inch clown was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and has been based in Atlanta, Georgia since 1995. The sulking serenader gained momentum after hitting the road as a guest performer on the 2010 Aqua Teen Hunger Force Live tour and the 2013 Eels tour.

He was great! Actually, it was my first time seeing him but I wouldn’t turn down another chance. He is a very good singer and really funny. The Eels then hit the stage with 5 straight rockers before even taking a breath.

The show was well done with a mix of rockers and ballads. They had an ongoing comedy bit with an announcement on screen when each of the band members achieved their exercise goal on their Apple watches. Little Joe, the youngest member, and drummer had an excellent drum solo during the Nancy Sinatra cover, Drummer Man. I really enjoyed the overall performance.

This playlist may not be 100% correct – It is for the previous show on the tour

The light show and backdrop were very well done. They had a Moon that could be a vivid image of the actual Moon or change to the Earth. They would also project cartoon band member faces there too. I would definitely like to see the Eels again. E’s voice was pretty gravelly though, probably due to age and a long tour.

Eels postpone their UK, European and US tour to 2023

"We’re sure you’re getting tired of seeing announcements like this," the band said in a statement

Eels have postponed their upcoming ‘Lockdown Hurricane’ headline tour, which had been set to visit the UK next month, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Mark ‘E’ Oliver Everett-led band had been set to kick off the tour in Belfast on March 11 in support of their latest album ‘Extreme Witchcraft’ .

However, Eels have now confirmed that the tour is being pushed back to 2023 “due to the current state of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic-enforced travel and local restrictions”.

In a statement, Eels said “we’re sure you’re getting tired of seeing announcements like this”.

“When we planned our 2022 tour seven months ago we hoped we would be in a more ideal place to carry it out by now. Hopefully things are improving but unfortunately, because of the current state of the pandemic and travel and local restrictions, we’re not quite at a point where we can pull off a tour.

“Our spring ’22 tour of Europe and the U.S. will have to be postponed to spring ’23. We’d come sooner but the rest of this year has been reserved by artists who previously had to cancel. We’re extremely disappointed we won’t get to see you this year, it was going to be doubly rocktastic after not being able to tour in 2020, so we will rock you triply in 2023.”

Eels Announce Spring 2022 Tour Dates

In support of their latest album, Earth to Dora

Eels have detailed a 2022 spring tour in support of their latest album, Earth to Dora , which dropped in October 2020. The European and US trek will take place from March through May.

After kicking off the tour on March 11th in Belfast, the veteran indie rockers will travail across Europe while making stops in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, and more. The US leg starts on May 8th in San Diego and includes cities like Chicago, New York City, and Boston.

“We’ve got a lot of pent-up energy from all the time spent cooped-up and unable to rock,” said Eels mastermind Mark Oliver Everett about the tour. “It’s going to be an extra-special treat this time. We always have the greatest time playing live, but this is gonna get crazy. Attendees will want to keep their cameras rolling, because we may explode.”

Tickets will be available to the general public at Ticketmaster starting Friday, July 16th at 10:00 a.m. local time. Look for deals on the secondary market here once they sell out.

Eels’ long awaited Lockdown Hurricane tour, postponed three times and their first in 4 years feels like a band going all out at their blistering, bluesy best. They are truly making up for lost time with their UK dates including tonight’s sold out show Camden’s Roundhouse, with Glasgow’s Barrowlands and Manchester’s iconic Albert Hall coming up, followed by a European and North American tour.

Lead singer Mark Oliver Everett aka E clearly loves bantering with the band and the crowd, and in a particularly amusing aside exclaims that “We all have exercise goals!”. Joking that they need to get their steps in on stage tonight and are being monitored on their smartwatches, which has the crowd howling. Brilliantly colourful imagery in the lyrics "I ain’t that pretty for a dog-faced boy" highlight E’s comical imagination as a blistering drum solo breaks into an effortless riff from Chet, who has played with Eels for 20 years.

E says of his band “Little Joe is here in the good name of Dad rock! Big Al on the bass - in the fine tradition of granddad Rick! 20 years of me and the Chet - 20 years!”

In the first encore the band return to the stage with E teasing “we didn’t see that coming, you’re so sweet”, pretending to be the audience, adding “We’d love to play for you all night, but we simply can’t”.

Leaving the stage again with a lingering pause and coming back with a highly unorthodox second encore ending with a fantastic cover of God Gave Rock and Roll to You, E goes on a mad tangent about going on like a toddler, rounding off a superbly energetic and entertaining night of part blues and part stand up comedy from Eels.

EELS have announced details of a UK and European tour for the spring of 2022.

The Mark ‘E’ Everett-led band will tour in support of their Earth To Dora album, which came out back in October.

EELS will embark on their next UK and European tour in March 2022, kicking off in Belfast on March 11 next year. The UK and Ireland leg will conclude with a date at the O2 Guildhall in Southampton on March 18 before Eels then head to the continent. Their mainland Europe concerts begin on March 21 at the Zenith in Munich, Germany and conclude at AFAS Live in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on April 8. EELS ANNOUNCE NEW UK TOUR DATES!!

EELS have added five new UK dates onto their summer tour . The band are already due to be in the UK next month for V Festival, as well as to play a previously announced gig at Oxford's O2 Academy. The new dates will take place in Liverpool, Newcastle, Leicester, Glasgow and at London's O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire this September.

The band's summer tour of European festivals and headline shows follows the release of their critically acclaimed new album ‘Wonderful Glorious’ and a hugely successful Spring world tour.

I hope this past year hasn’t been too hard on you. It’s been a tough few years for so many people. I’ve learned a lot from people who have withstood great hardships and still managed to show me great compassion and kindness, and it’s these qualities that I’m always striving to show more of towards others. The past year hasn’t been all that tough for me compared to many people, but since you asked, it has not been uneventful.

Let’s see… After being cooped up in lockdown all those years and canceling tours, we finally went out and played shows for the first time in nearly four years last spring and I almost lost my mind during the early part of it. It was such a mind-fucking culture shock after being so isolated and in a completely different world all that time. But eventually I pulled it together and I think we ended up doing some of the best shows we’ve ever done. It was so great to see… people! And thank you to those who showed me kindness and understanding during its undertaking, and thank you The Chet, Big Al and Little Joe, the most kick ass band any singer could hope to be in the midst of.

Some months after the tour I had my first ever hospital experience. To make it this long without going to a hospital was a good run, indeed. Never doing anything halfway, when it finally came time to go to one, I made sure it was a doozy. The only good thing that came out of my father dying of a heart attack at age 51 was it taught me to stay on top of heart health. So I’ve had yearly scans to keep an eye on things, and it became apparent that, although I felt fine and had no symptoms, my aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body, had an aneurysm and if I didn’t replace it soon it was bound to explode and make me feel symptoms of… death. Probably sometime in the next few months. This isn’t related to what happened to my father, but it was because of him that I found out about this.

I had open heart surgery. They cut through my pecs, sawed through my breastbone and stopped my heart on the table. They put in a new aorta. Either I made it, or I really am in a parallel universe now. Either way, all good. I was in the hospital for a week with really wonderful people helping me through it all. And I’m fine now, thanks to Dr.s Bowdish and Cohen making sure my heart started back up, and thanks to nurses Shannon, Trisha and Michelle in ICU and Doreen and all the other amazing nurses and doctors in DOU.

One night a new nurse was on duty and I was having a rough night and kept asking her for pain meds or anything to help me sleep. In the morning she told me she’d heard I was in a band and looked me up. She said, “I saw that your top song on Spotify was called ‘I Need Some Sleep’ and I said, ‘yep, that’s him!’”

So that was my year. Pretty good, I’d say. Oh and then there’s one other thing: there’s a new EELS album. That’s right. Now it’s EELS TIME!

It seems the whole open heart surgery thing hasn’t managed to slow me down. Somehow the creative juices just keep flowing. I recently discovered that the previous owner of our studio house was an older woman who’s grandfather was Mark Twain’s lawyer, and she found the original manuscript of Huckleberry Finn in the attic that is now our recording studio control room. The manuscript had a lot of missing material that wasn’t in the published book and has since been added to all new editions. So it’s probably not me. It’s this house. It’s a hotbed of creativity. It’s got stories seeping out of the attic.
