Best Travel Changing Pads for On-The-Go Diaper Changes

Have you ever had to change your baby’s diaper on the go? If you’re on a trip, in a hotel, running an errand, or just out for the day, a non-toxic travel changing pad will come to your rescue when your little one is ready for a diaper change.
Travel changing pads are foldable, flat pads that provide surface protection from germs, and a softer space to lay your baby. They might not offer a ton of cushion for your baby, but they will help get the job done.
Here are our favorite non-toxic travel changing pads! Slip one into your diaper bag.
Natemia Organic Cotton Travel Changing Mat
Buy on Amazon | Natemia
Made in Portugal. Stylish and convenient, Natemia’s organic cotton travel changing mats are perfect for on-the-go diaper changes with your baby. Featuring organic cotton and an Oeko-Tex certified polyfill, they provide a clean and safe surface for your baby, with just enough cushion for comfort.
This material is soft and safe for your baby but is not waterproof or wipeable. Keep this in mind while changing your baby.
Make Make Organics Portable Changing Pad
Buy on MakeMake Organics
Made in India. Make Make Organics offers a rather innovative portable changing pad. It has elastic straps to store essentials in so when you unfold it, everything is ready to go. Alternatively, you can tuck items like soiled clothing inside these elastic compartments after the diaper change to store until you you have time to launder it.

This portable changing pad is 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and coated in a water-resistant USDA-certified plant-based extract. This is an excellent option for on-the-go diaper changes especially if you want a blanket-like surface for your baby while being able to keep things organized and clean!
LilyMoon Portable Diaper Changing Pad
Buy on Amazon
Made in China. The LilyMoon portable changing pad gives you everything you need in one little bundle! With a padded pillow, diaper and wipes pockets, and more, you can stash everything you need in this handy little pouch.
As far as materials go, this travel changing pad is made from PEVA material that is Oeko-Tex certified. While I wouldn’t say this is totally non-toxic, it is a cleaner option that offers a lot of functionality. If you do buy this item, I would probably recommend laying a swaddle blanket underneath your baby, just in case.
But otherwise, it does look like a good and cleaner option for on-the-go diaper changes! I would totally get this for the convenience factor alone + the fact that it’s Oeko-Tex certified doesn’t hurt.

The 10 Best Changing Pads for Home and Away
Look for comfort, safety, and easy cleanup for those many, many diaper changes.

Your Questions, Answered
Parents / Kristin Kempa
Newborns can require diaper changes as many as 12 times a day, so a changing pad is a nursery must-have. This handy piece of equipment should ensure that diaper-changing time is as safe and comfortable as possible for your little one. The best changing pad is easy to use, clean, and fits well into your space.
“Choose a changing pad that has a concave top part to place your baby. This not only offers some more comfort and cushioning but might provide some added security,” says Nkeiruka Orajiaka, MBBS , a board-certified pediatrician. It's also important to note that a baby should never be left unattended on a changing pad, even when the safety straps are buckled.
Before you make your purchase, several factors must be considered to ensure your changing pad meets your and your baby's needs during diaper changes . Whether safety is your main concern or you're looking for a product made from organic material, rest assured that the right changing pad is out there. We carefully reviewed the material, value, design, ease of cleaning, and safety guidance to create this list.
Best Overall
Summer contoured changing pad, why we like it.
The Summer Infant Contoured Changing Pad is our top pick because it has everything you want in a changing pad: It’s safe, comfortable, simple to clean, and affordable. The quilted, double-layered vinyl is ultra-simple to wipe down quickly, and the high contoured sides and plush padding keep a baby comfortable and secure.
A security strap underneath keeps the pad steady on a sturdy changing table, and a strap on the top can keep a fussy or wiggly infant safe during a diaper change.
But Take Note
The material of the Summer Infant changing pad is lightweight but sturdy. Unfortunately, the changing pad isn't machine washable, but universal disposable covers fit the changing pad well for easy clean-up.
The Details:
- Dimensions: 32.5 x 16.5 x 4 in.
- Materials: Quilted, double-layered PEVA vinyl
- Safety straps: Yes
Best for Dresser
Keekaroo peanut changer.
Thanks to its slip-resistant base and peanut shape, the Keekaroo can be used on a dresser or regular table without having to purchase an extra changing table specifically for diapering your little one. We think the Keekaroo's cost will be worth it for some families, as it saves time and energy while providing easy cleanup and long-lasting durability.
We love the Keekaroo's ergonomic design, which is comfortable for infants, and its special polyurethane foam, which is resistant to damage like cracks, discoloration, or stains over time. Its soft but solid surface makes it virtually impermeable to liquids and mess during diaper changes, although the material may feel cold against the skin at times.
- Dimensions: 32 x 17 x 4 in.
- Materials: Polyurethane foam
Best Organic
Naturepedic organic contoured changing pad.
For babies with sensitive skin, and parents aiming to have fewer artificial chemicals in their home, Naturepedic's changing pad is made with an organic cotton fill and organic cotton fabric with food-grade polyethylene waterproofing made from sugarcane.
The pad is free of phthalates, formaldehyde, GMOs, latex, soy, vinyl, polyurethane foam, and flame retardants, all of which are potentially irritating and possibly dangerous. Plus, it meets eco-friendly and organic standards set by GREENGUARD and the Global Organic Textile Standard. The Naturepedic pad is about 16.5 x 31.5 x 4 inches, and your purchase includes a one-year warranty. It's long-lasting and durable, and its design minimizes rolling and wiggling.
The Naturepedic Changing Pad is plush and comfy, with thick padding and high contoured sides that keep little ones safe, secure, and cozy. We found that the material tends to bunch, but the company includes a furniture belt with screws for a secure attachment to furniture.
- Dimensions: 16.5 x 31.5 x 4 in.
- Materials: 100% organic cotton
Best for Safety
La baby waterproof diaper changing pad.
If security is your main concern, this changing pad will put your mind at ease. It has a slip-resistant base, four high contoured sides, and a safety harness with a quick-release buckle—plus, it comes with two screws to mount it even more securely to furniture. It’s also made of nontoxic, hypoallergenic material and is anti-microbial, phthalate-free, and waterproof. As with all changing pads, you should never leave your child unattended, even if the pad has extra security features.
This changing pad comes in two sizes, 30 inches and 32 inches long, and many parents choose the smaller one because it’s compact enough to fit some changing tables that other changing pads don’t. While it’s affordable, we found it may start cracking over time, losing its great initial durability.
- Dimensions: 30 x 16 x 4 in.
- Materials: Vinyl cover, polyester fill
Best With Entertainment
Skip hop baby changing pad.
Diaper changes might not be very fun, but that doesn't mean your little one can't be entertained. This changing pad features a tuck-away bar with dangling sun and cloud mirror toys to engage your baby's gaze. A safety belt and non-skid bottom keep the pad (and baby) secure during diaper changes.
The pad isn't quite as cushy as other options on our list, but the foam material is simple to wipe clean.
- Dimensions: 18.25 x 2.6 x 31.5 in.
- Materials: Foam
- Safety straps: No
Best for Changing Tables
Munchkin secure grip changing pad.
The Munchkin Secure Grip Waterproof Diaper Changing Pad is one of the most affordable options on the market. With a compact design that fits most dressers and typical changing tables, it also boasts easily cleanable material and an ultra-secure grip base, making it helpful for those with wiggly babies.
The Munchkin pad may have a chemical smell, especially when it's new, so consider letting it air out for a few days after unboxing it.
- Dimensions: 31.5 x 16.2 x 4.3 in.
- Materials: Polyurethane foam, non-phthalate polyvinyl chloride, cardboard, thermoplastic elastomer, polypropylene, polyacetel
Best With Baby Scale
Hatch baby grow smart changing pad.
We love the many different features of this durable baby changing pad, including its user-friendly app and easy upkeep. This changing pad doubles as a scale, so you can check your baby’s weight during a diaper change. While the app is required to use the scale, you don’t need the app to use the changing pad itself.
We appreciate the changing pad’s easy-to-clean material, which you can wipe off with a soft, damp cloth. Plus, it has a safety belt to keep your little one secure. According to some parents, the scale can break if you lean on it too much.
- Dimensions: 29 x 16 x 3.5 in.
- Materials: ABS plastic
Best for Wiggly Babies
Poopoose baby changing pad.
If your little one is a squirmer, consider this changing pad from PooPoose. Some babies may not like the feel of a traditional safety belt, so this changing pad features patented swaddle-like straps to keep your little one still (and cozy!). The foam pad itself is water-resistant and easy to wipe clean, while the adjustable straps are machine-washable. It also comes with safety anchors to attach the pad to your changing table. Plus, we appreciate the contoured shape to keep your kiddo safe and snug.
While the strap is this changing pad's main selling point, just be aware that not all babies will love it. Rebellious toddlers have been known to flip around onto their bellies while still strapped in.
- Dimensions: 32 x 16 x 3.5 in.
- Materials: Recycled Foam
Best Portable
Skip hop pronto changing station.
Perfect for families on the go, this changing pad has pockets for your baby’s necessities and a compact design for easy transport. Measuring 23.5 x 21.75 inches, it’s big enough for little ones to lie on during a diaper change. Whether you're stashing it in your bag for a trip to the store or packing for a family vacation, this changing pad’s foldable design and included carrying strap come in handy.
While the changing pad isn’t machine washable, you can spot-clean it with mild detergent.
- Dimensions: 11.75 x 4 x 8.25 in. (closed); 23.5 x 21.75 in. (open)
- Materials: Polyester
Best Disposable
Munchkin disposable changing pad.
Toting a bulky changing pad around can be a hassle, and you're not always near a good place to clean up afterward. These disposable changing pads are easy to toss into your diaper bag, use once, and then discard. The 10 disposable pads in the pack are infused with baking soda to combat odor, while the leakproof liner prevents liquid from seeping through.
It's not ideal for everyday use, especially as we try to reduce waste, but these pads are very convenient for families on the go.
- Dimensions: 18 x 26.75 in.
- Materials: Paper
Our Review Process and Experts
We chose the best changing pads by speaking with a pediatrician and reviewing guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to determine the safety and health criteria for the selections on our list. We researched reviews from customers and competitors and examined the features of dozens of changing pads on the market, considering attributes like design, ease of cleaning, material, and safety when making our picks.
We consulted with Nkeiruka Orajiaka, MBBS, a board-certified pediatrician, on how to use a changing pad safely and what to look for in this item.
Factors to Consider in a Changing Pad
- Design: A diaper-changing pad should provide comfort and safety for the little one who will spend a lot of time on it. Look for changing pads with features like a three-sided or contoured design to prevent them from rolling off, with additional cushioning to keep babies comfortable and protect their heads. Moreover, the changing pad should fit in the space you're looking at, such as a changing table dresser.
- Waterproof Material: It’s essential to make sure the changing pad has waterproof or an easily wipeable material because, with babies, anything (messy) can happen. Some changing pads come with a waterproof cover, or the pad itself wipes off. Make sure liquid can't leak into the pad, which could cause mildew or mold. Whether the changing pad or the cover is waterproof, double-check the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning. “Changing areas are huge breeding areas for both viruses and bacteria. Urine and feces are considered dirty, and if not cleaned off a surface, [they] can serve as a focus for most of these bugs to continue to grow,” explains Dr. Orajiaka. “When you place a baby on an unclean surface continuously, they may not only put their skin at risk of rash or irritation, but babies also touch all surfaces they are placed on and put their hands in the mouth. This can put them at risk of also getting sick from these bugs.”
- Safety Straps: Safety straps help keep your baby in place (since you do only have two hands). Many changing pads come with adjustable straps and a buckle so you can adjust to the proper size. Some changing pads also feature anchoring straps to attach them to a table or dresser, ensuring additional safety while changing your baby. Dr. Orajiaka recommends this option if possible. “Always buckle the straps while changing a baby, but don’t depend on this alone to keep your baby safe," she says. "Stay with your baby at all times while changing and avoid distractions. When you are done changing, remove your baby from the table first and to a safer location before removing your dirty diapers or clothing.”
Is it worth it to buy an expensive changing pad?
Until your little one becomes potty trained, they will need their diaper changed upwards of 3,500 times. So investing in a changing pad that saves you time (a pad that is easy to clean) and money (one secure enough to lay on top of any surface, meaning you can forgo buying a dedicated changing table), could be a good idea. What’s more, investing in a changing pad that stands the test of time means that you have the option of using it for more than one child.
However, there are plenty of safe, comfortable and easy to clean changing pads that are also affordable, so don't feel any pressure to spend more than you want to.
How many changing pads do I need to buy?
Having an extra or two might make life easier, but one changing pad is all you really need. If you live in a two-story house, having one changing pad upstairs and one downstairs will be more convenient than having to navigate the stairs every time you need to change the baby. Having a separate, portable changing pad that you keep in your diaper bag is also a worthwhile investment for on-the-go diaper changes.
Do changing pads come in a standard size?
Changing pads differ in dimensions, with the average size being approximately 17.5 x 27.5 inches. If you have a particular spot that you are planning to keep and use your changing pad, measure the space before you buy it to ensure that it fits. If you are using your changing pad on a changing table, dresser or another elevated position and is too big, it poses a safety risk. However, you may want to ensure that your changing pad is large enough to see you through to toddlerhood.

Most newborns get through an average of 10-12 nappies a day, so you can certainly expect nappy changes to be a major part of your daily routine with a new baby.
While you may have a changing table or comfortable ‘wedge style’ changing mat at home, changing your baby while out and about can be a little more unpredictable. Taking a travel changing mat with you on your travels can ensure simple and stress-free nappy changes, even in the absence of adequate baby changing facilities.
What is a travel changing mat?
Travel changing mats are small and lightweight changing mats that can be folded up into a compact carry-along package and can easily be stashed inside your changing bag or in the basket of your pushchair . Changing mats are a convenient option for day trips with your baby without needing the bulk or weight of a full-sized option.
Travel changing mats are also a hygienic option for changing your baby at service stations, airports or simply when visiting friends and family where you don’t have your changing mat to hand. They are generally made from wipe-down fabrics which are quick and easy to clean and some have built-in storage too, providing a small amount of space for your essentials such as nappies and wipes.
What to look for in a travel changing mat?
Here are some things to consider when choosing the right travel changing mat for you.
- Material: What is it made from? Whilst cotton can be soft and gentle against your baby’s skin, wipe-down fabrics are far easier to keep clean, with the ability to simply wipe down after use. Some changing mats are relatively thin, whilst others are padded or cushioned and may even include a small support pillow for additional comfort. Whilst comfort for your baby is important, the thinner fabrics are often more lightweight and tend to fold down more flat - handy if you’re particularly limited on space.
- Size: How big is the travel changing mat? Is there plenty of space for your baby and/or toddler to lie down? Does the changing mat fold or wrap to a smaller compact size for packing in your bag or suitcase? Does it have a carry handle or strap for portability?
- Storage: Does the travel changing mat include any storage? If you’re hoping to leave your full changing bag at home, it can be helpful if the travel mat offers the capacity to store at least a couple of nappies and wipes. Some have elasticated pockets, some have zipped areas and others even have integrated wipe dispensers - all of which can make a practical and convenient choice.

Storksak Organic Travel Baby Change Station
Best for: Great all-rounder
Material: Organic cotton with water resistant wipe clean lining made from recycled materials
Folded dimensions: H20cm x W30cm x D5cm
Unfolded dimensions: L56cm x W35cm
Storage: Concealed mesh wipe dispenser pocket and zipped back pocket
This stylish unisex travel baby change station from Storksak Organic is more than just a fold-out changing mat. A convenient change station for changes on the go, the Storksak is designed with busy parents in mind.
We love the one-handed quick-release velcro strap that allows you to open it up quickly and easily, even when holding the wriggliest of babies. Made from soft organic cotton with a wipe-down internal lining, the memory foam padding ensures your baby stays calm and comfortable during nappy changes. The changing mat can even be completely removed thanks to the velcro tabs around the edge.
With ample built-in storage, it makes a convenient alternative to your changing bag, with a concealed mesh pocket wipe dispenser and a spacious zipped compartment for housing your nappies, cream and spare clothing. If your pushchair basket is full (potentially with another supply of nappies), you can even attach the Storksak handle to your pushchair for easy access without taking up space.
Whilst it’s not the cheapest option on our list, the Storksak offers premium fabrics, a stylish design and the ultimate convenience. Best of all, if the changing mat gets grubby, you can simply pop it in the washing machine for a full refresh.
Bambino Mio Baby Changing Mat
Best for: Budget-friendly
Material: OKEO-TEX Standard 100 polyester
Folded dimensions: 20cm x 15cm
Unfolded dimensions: 43cm x 60cm
Storage: n/a
You may be familiar with the eco-friendly Bambino Mio brand from their bold and bright range of reusable nappies, but they also have a selection of convenient travel mats too, retailing at less than £15. With a simple folding design secured by a handy velcro tab, they’re ideal for popping inside your changing bag for a compact and portable nappy changing option when travelling or outside of the home.
Made from sustainable materials, the super soft surface is lightly cushioned for your baby’s comfort and if your baby has a tendency to wee the moment you remove their nappy, the absorbent padding can help mop up any little accidents that may occur.
Whilst this option doesn’t have any built-in storage, these striking designs are easy to wash, dry quickly and offer great value for money with a budget-friendly price tag.
Lekebaby Portable Nappy Changing Mat
Best for: Storage space
Material: Water-resistant polyester
Folded dimensions: 22×35cm
Unfolded dimensions: 63 × 35cm
Storage: Three inner pockets and a zipped outer pocket
If you’re looking for a portable changing mat that can house all your essentials without taking up valuable space in your bag or pushchair, the Lekebaby Portable Changing Mat is an excellent choice.
A number one bestseller on Amazon and with good reason, the Lekebaby Portable Nappy Changing Mat features four generously sized storage areas. As well as the zipped pocket on the outside, there are also three interior pockets including a mesh pouch, a pocket suitable for a handful of nappies and a large wipe pocket with a convenient wipe dispenser. The mat is a good size, offering good longevity and plenty of space for your baby as they grow.
The padding on the large fold-out changing mat is relatively thin, but you’ll find extra cushioning at the top, creating a soft and comfortable pillow to rest your baby’s head. When full, this fold-up changing mat is inevitably a little more bulky than some, however, we love the convenient carry handle, which can be suspended from the handlebar of your stroller with ease.
John Lewis ANYDAY Travel Changing Mat
Best for: Wipe down fabrics
Folded dimensions: H30 x W20 x D4cm
Unfolded dimensions: L93 x W54cm
Storage: Three small storage pockets (one with zip)
If hygiene is your top priority, you’ll love the wipe-down fabric on the John Lewis ANYDAY Travel Changing Mat, which allows you to wipe down or spray with a baby-safe antibacterial after every use.
With three small storage pockets, there is more than enough space to pop in a supply of nappies and wipes for a day trip out with your baby. Whether you opt for the velcro tab pocket, the interior mesh pocket or the flat zipped pouch to the outside, it’s easy to organise your essentials so that they’re always close to hand when you need them.
The unfolded dimensions may sound generous, yet the size of the detachable changing mat on this design is actually relatively small, so that’s worth bearing in mind if you have a baby in the taller percentile. Some reviewers also found that it also became worn quite quickly, so it may not offer the longevity of some of the more costly designs.
Avery Row Travel Baby Changing Mat
Best for: Luxury design
Material: 100 per cent GOTS organic cotton with recycled polyester filling
Folded dimensions: 26 x 20cm
Unfolded dimensions: 70 x 50cm
Storage: None
If you want the practicality of a travel changing mat but don’t want to sacrifice style, then the stunning Avery Row prints will certainly catch your eye.
Made from soft and snuggly cushioned organic cotton with a water-resistant lining, this fold-up changing mat has a simple press stud which pops open to create a spacious and comfortable base for your baby to lie on during nappy changes.
It’s worth noting that there is no integrated storage in this design, yet we love the ease of use and the muted colour palette, with coordinating muslins and wash bags in the range as an added bonus. Best of all, you can throw the entire thing in the washing machine on a delicate cycle to get it fresh, clean and ready to use again in no time.
Mabel & Fox Retro Florals Travel Changing Mat
Best for: Classic design
Material: Non-toxic PVC
Folded dimensions: 34cm x 16cm x 5cm
Unfolded dimensions: 60cm x 34 cm x 1cm
Whilst all singing dancing changing mats with enhanced features and a variety of storage pockets can be helpful, it’s often the most simple designs that are effective when looking for fast and efficient nappy-changing solutions on the go.
The UK-designed Mabel & Fox Travel Changing Mats come in a wide range of colours and patterns, with a simple fold-out surface that can be conveniently wiped down after use.
Lightweight and portable, yet filled with soft cushioned nursery foam, they’re comfortable and supportive for your baby whilst being spacious enough to use from birth to toddler. We love the newspaper-style fold which can easily be stashed into your changing bag or buggy without taking up valuable storage space.
Mama Shack Travel Changing Mat
Best for: Cushioning and support
Material: Non-toxic, BPA and phthalate-free fabric
Folded dimensions: 35 x 20 x 3cm
Unfolded dimensions: 60 x 34cm x 1cm
Designed for simple and straightforward nappy changes, this well-cushioned travel changing mat may have a pocket to store your nappies, but there are no fiddly zips or velcro to contend with as a result. Thanks to its thick foam interior, it provides superior comfort and support for your baby - so you don’t have to rush when getting your baby clean.
With a compact, flat and lightweight design, it can easily be popped into a changing bag or tucked into your pushchair basket before rolling out at the service station or changing room when needed. It can even double up as a comfortable playmat during your family’s visits to the park.
We love the modern monochrome print and the non-toxic, BPA and phthalate-free fabric which is both wipeable and waterproof, making it quick and easy to clean, whatever your baby may throw at it.
Splash About Baby Neoprene Changing Mat
Best for: Waterproof fabrics
Material: Neoprene
Folded dimensions: Unspecified
Unfolded dimensions : 41.5cm x 69cm
If you’ve ever taken your baby swimming during your travels, you’ll know that getting them clean and dry quickly can be quite a challenge, especially as they’re so sensitive to the cold.
Made from 3mm thick neoprene, these non-slip changing mats are ideal for nappy changes on the go - from changing room floors, to on a sun lounger or even during a day out at the beach. Simply rolling out as and when required, the compact ‘yoga mat style’ roll can then be secured with the velcro tabs before popping into your swimming bag ready for the journey home.
The naturally sanitising fabric can not only help stow away bacteria, but it’s also quick and easy to wipe down after use. Neoprene also retains heat, making a warm and comfortable base for your baby that won’t upset them when they leave the warmth of the pool. Available in four different shades, you can even coordinate with your baby’s swimwear - adorable!
Skip Hop Pronto Changing Station
Best for: Changing bag alternative
Material: Polyester
Folded dimensions : 22 x 28 x 2.5cm
Unfolded dimensions: 54.6 x 0.6 x 91.4cm
Storage: Front zipper pocket and mesh pocket
Last but not least, if you’re willing to spend a little more, this Skip Hop Pronto Changing Station makes a great alternative to your changing bag, with plenty of storage including a wipes case, mesh pocket and a front zipped pocket to the exterior.
With a modern monochrome zig-zag design, we love how the translucent wipes case helps you keep track of your supplies, and that there’s enough space to house a good stash of nappies and creams. The carry handle makes it lightweight and portable, but it can also be attached to your pushchair for a hands-free alternative.
With an extra wide removable changing mat, it’s spacious and be used with older babies, even including a cushioned head area with a ‘pronto pillow’ to keep your little one content and comfortable when they lie down. The only downside, the fastening clip is a little harder to open one-handed than options such as the Storksak Organic.
Whilst it’s a little more costly than some, we feel the Storksak Organic is worth the investment. With a modern unisex design, significant storage space and the ability to use one-handed, it offers quick and convenient nappy changes outside the home. The soft organic cotton is both comfortable for your baby and easy to clean, making travelling with your baby simple and stress-free.

Omsk Russia – Do not try to leave Omsk

Table of content
“Don’t try to leave Omsk” – thanks to this meme, the second largest Siberian city Omsk has become one of the most famous cities in Russia. But being well-known does not automatically mean having a good reputation.
Omsk – The worst city in Russia
Fyodor Dostoevsky, one of the most important Russian writers, spent four years in an Omsk penitentiary.
“Omsk is a lousy town. Hardly any trees here. Heat and wind with sand in summer, blizzard in winter. A dirty little town, military and bawdy to the max.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky
So pejoratively wrote Dostoevsky to his brother in 1854 shortly after his release. In various unofficial rankings, Omsk has been declared the worst city in Russia, including by the well-known Moscow travel blogger and photographer Ilya Varlamov , who ran for mayor in Omsk in 2012. He had the ambitious goal of making the much-hated Omsk the most livable city in the country. Varlamov was not elected, because Moscow and Omsk are far apart – not only geographically.
Bathe in cheese and be buried quickly
The so-called Omsk cheesemakers – former employees of a cheese factory who bathed in milk at a company party at the factory – are known throughout Russia. They posted pictures of this themselves on the Russian social network VKontakte. Father and son Golovanovi are also from Omsk. They are Russia’s fastest morticians and winners of the “Graves without limits” competition to see who can dig a grave the fastest.
But is the city really that bad and are its inhabitants as creepy as you know from the Internet? To answer this question, I went there myself. I had to accept the risk of not being able to leave the city.
Third capital of Russia
“In Omsk it’s like Paris, only better”, “We love Omsk and are proud of Russia” – with these graffiti the city greeted me. The locals are apparently not as negative about their homeland as some bloggers from the capital. By the way, from 1918 to 1919, during the Russian Civil War, Omsk was the capital of the anti-Bolshevik White Russia led by Admiral Kolchak.
According to a poll conducted in the summer of 2021, 49% of Omsk residents were in favor of moving the capital from Moscow to Omsk. The idea of moving the capital has been discussed for several years, but it is unclear where. When, as part of a program for the development of Siberia, it was proposed that five new cities be founded in Siberia, the satirical portal “Panorama” (comparable to the “Onion”) posted the message that one of these five cities should be founded in the place where Omsk is today. The joke was well received.
The egg of Poleshayev and the birth of the meme
In Omsk, a monument commemorates the city’s founder Ivan Buchholz. Because of its strange shape, this monument is also called the “Egg of Poleshayev”. During a storm in 2014, the seven-meter sphere fell from its pedestal and thus tried to leave Omsk. But the monument could not escape – it was caught again in time by tractors and hoisted back onto its pedestal. A second attempt to escape two years later was also unsuccessful.
According to another, less beautiful version, the meme arose after the documentary of the same name about the difficulties of Omsk’s youth in the local labor market. The meme has become so widespread that even the deputy mayor of Omsk, Alexander Burkov, called it the cause of the region’s economic problems and complained that it would scare off investors.
The shortest subway in the world
An interesting Omsk sight is the metro. With only one station, the Pushkin Library stop, it would probably be the smallest metro in the world today, but in 2019 it was decided to stop the project. While the Soviet Union was still in power, the directive was that every city with over 1 million inhabitants should have a metro. In 1991, work began on building a metro in Omsk. The project failed several times, allegedly for lack of money.
According to another version, the available money was not used for years in accordance with the goal. After all, there is a subway bridge in Omsk and a permanently closed subway station, where art exhibitions are now held regularly. What does not exist, however, is a functioning subway. The Youtube-Channel Railways of the World took a closer look:
But even if there is no working metro in Omsk, there is at least one good place where you can forget your pain about the missing metro. In the library building, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the metro station, there is a private brewery “ U Pushkina ” (To Pushkin) at 11 Krasny Put Street. There you can taste delicious, freshly brewed and tapped beer from Omsk.
The Siberian citadel of underground music
And even though Omsk lacks obvious sights, there are other treasures to be discovered here. Namely, Omsk is the hometown of a famous Siberian musician and poet. The founder of the punk band “Grazhdanskaya Oborona” Yegor Letov, about whom we report in this article about Russian rock music , is from here. His name is closely connected with the city of Omsk, even though he did not give a single concert here.
In 2018, ten years after Letov’s death, there was a proposal from among the population to name the Omsk airport after Letov as part of the “Great Names of Russia” project. However, the Minister of Culture Medinsky thought it was bad custom to name an airport after a living person. “Letov is alive, and Lenin and Lennon” – Medinsky replied to the justified remark that Letov was already no longer alive.
Even though there are no names comparable to Letov in Omsk these days, the city’s underground scene is still quite lively. Well-attended alternative festivals are regularly held here and in the surrounding area. Even before the pandemic, I was lucky enough to experience the performances of the Omsk band Altera Pars, which many Siberian festival-goers and visitors to underground clubs know.
From the Omsk oblast, more precisely from the city of Kalachinsk, comes the Nordic ritual folk band Nytt Lan, which should be familiar to fans of Nordic folk music. The stouner rock band Groggy is also known far beyond the borders of Omsk. So Omsk is at least an important center of attraction for Russian music culture.
Germans in Siberia
And also especially for German visitors Omsk can be quite interesting. Because the first German settlers existed in Siberia already since the end of the 19th century. They were civil servants, members of the military and farmers. At that time Siberia was attractive for many. A second wave of migration to Siberia during and after the Second World War was less voluntary: Stalin ordered several thousand citizens of German origin to be deported to Siberia.
Before the collapse of the USSR, about 130,000 ethnic Germans lived in the Omsk oblast, just under half of them resettled in Germany during the 1990s. According to a census, 50,055 Germans still lived in Omsk Oblast in 2010, 14,470 of them directly in the city of Omsk.
In the summer of 2021, shortly before the end of Angela Merkel’s chancellorship, the residents of the Omsk village of Wechhnij Karbusch made a video asking the Chancellor to asphalt the main road in the village, because the oldest and most important road in the village, founded by the Russian Germans, is in a pitiful condition and they have to be ashamed when guests from Germany come to visit. The villagers addressed their request to Merkel because they did not receive any help from Russian politicians and officials. Unfortunately, however, a spokeswoman for Angela Merkel denied the request.
Lenin monument in Omsk
And so people in Russia prefer to look back to old constants – like Lenin. Even 30 years after the collapse of the USSR, Lenin is still perceived by many in Russia as a kind of sacred cow. Whether small or large, there is at least one Lenin monument in every Russian city. Omsk is no exception, there were once even 18 Lenin monuments in the city!
But one of them was dismantled and provides space for new legends. In 2007, when the Uspensky Cathedral was rebuilt on the main square of Omsk, someone noticed that the cast-iron Lenin standing next to it pointed with his hand to the cathedral. However, Lenin was a great opponent of the church and religion.
The monument was first covered for a few weeks and then secretly dismantled at night. The Omsk Secretary of the Russian Communist Party reacted indignantly, saw the action as a crime, and reported the city council to the prosecutor’s office. However, the monument never returned. There are different versions of the legend, which say that it is either stored somewhere or was demolished. However, perhaps the people of Omsk simply do not want to believe that Lenin actually managed to leave Omsk.
The author of this text thanks his long-time buddy and Omsk patriot Andrei Vlasov for the unique city tours and Nikita Plisko for the introduction to the alternative Siberian music scene.

Omsk: Western Siberia's hidden gem
A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov
Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.
The mystery of Kolchak’s gold
Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.
Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.
Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the Omsk Regional Archives at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery. For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia
Dostoevsky and the Tsar
At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.
Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.
In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.
Omsk’s cultural heritage
The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.
One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of his works .
Milhail Vrubel's painting 'Demon Seated in a Garden' (1890)
Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.
Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams, Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.
Siberian punk, jazz and the classics
While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a musical theater built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band, Grazhdanskaya oborona (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.
In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.
