After the revolution of 1917, Christmas was banned in the country just like the other celebrations and it was only in the year of 1992 when it was observed openly again. Almost all the Russians celebrate the occasion of Christmas on January 7 when the families get together to attend the church services that take places on the Christmas Eve i.e., 6 January. It is considered one of the most religious Russian Moscow festival celebrations when people enjoy their ‘holy supper’ including a dish made of porridge with the raisins known as Kutia. On either the Christmas Night or the Christmas Eve, you also have the opportunity to attend the conventional midnight mass in the beautiful Russian Church. There are many people who like to stay awake all the night at the church while others prefer to visit the churches on the Christmas Morning itself.

On Location: Filming ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Was Like Throwing a Festival in Vermont
After Tim Burton’s whimsical horror film Beetlejuice premiered in 1988, fans made many pilgrimages to the quiet Vermont town of East Corinth, which stood in as the fictional setting of Winter River. It was only fitting that the small town, which has a population of less than 1,500, got to reprise its role in the long-awaited sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice , alongside Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder.
“No one knew what it would be like,” says production designer Marc Scruton, who previously collaborated with Burton on the Netflix series Wednesday . “No one had been back there since the first film, other than the fans. But when I flew there, you could tell it was pretty much unchanged. It was the same town it had always been and you could see why they’d gone there in the first place.”
Scruton and his team spent 12 weeks in East Corinth rebuilding the Winter River sets, including the hilltop house owned by the Deetz family and the town’s main street. The interior sets, meanwhile, were created in London at Leavesden Studios. In total, Scruton and his team built 77 sets, most of which needed to take the film’s practical effects into consideration.
The film sees Ryder’s Lydia Deetz, her stepmother Delia (Catherine O’Hara) and her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) returning to Winter River for a sudden funeral. Lydia’s presence reignites the interest of afterlife spirit Betelgeuse (Keaton) and plunges the family into a comedic, bizarre adventure between life and death. The story showcases even more of Burton’s fantastical universe from Beetlejuice , including clever expansions of the afterlife and Winter River’s graveyard.
“Every day was bonkers,” Scruton says. “And because everything was real, you just roamed around in this bananas world and it just made you smile. Everybody enjoyed the frivolous craziness of the whole thing.” Here, Scruton discusses returning to East Corinth, developing the film’s stylized afterlife, and the love of the fans.
Much of the original cast is back for the sequel to Beetlejuice , including Catherine O’Hara (left) and Winona Ryder (third from left).
Was it a challenge to film in such a small town?
Definitely, especially with the size of construction we were doing on that job! We rebuilt the Deetz house on top of the hill. We rebuilt the covered bridge. The street with Maitland Hardware needed to expand into a much bigger row of shops. That’s quite a big undertaking for somewhere that has no real infrastructure. Luckily, the residents were all very game for it. We had to bring in a lot of people and a lot of equipment. We filled out all the hotels in the local area with our crew.
It was such a lovely town, but there wasn’t much around. But honestly, when we shot there, it was like a festival. The word spread that we were shooting back at East Corinth and people were being bussed in from all over. We had to have crowd control. They would turn up early in the morning and be on lawn chairs when we arrived at 6 a.m. A few people dressed up and showed up on horseback. There was some wild stuff.
Was there anywhere in town that you liked visiting while you were there?
There was one place we would go to regularly called The Little Grille on the Mill in Bradford. It was in a town up the road. It was about the only place we could find that was able to cope with the crew turning up and demanding food quickly, but it also had a magnificent view of a waterfall.
Several decades have passed since the first film. Has Winter River changed at all?
Yes. At one point, it got really big in the story and became a whole big town, and then we realized that knocked the character out of what it really was. So we just made it a little bit trendier. In the script, they reference things like micro-breweries. It wasn’t a pastiche of a cool town, but it needed to feel like it had become a hip place to go to. We had the Maitland Hardware store, so we turned that into a cool coffee shop and we added a couple of extra buildings with a pet grooming parlor and a vintage clothing store.
Jenny Ortega (pictured) joins the cast as Astrid, the daughter of Winona Ryder’s character, Lydia Deetz, from the original film.
Why did you have to rebuild the covered bridge?
The bridge is there, but it has been widened into a modern two-lane highway. Interestingly, the original bridge that had been built there was moved down the road and used in a local ski area [ Northeast Slopes ] as a shelter for people waiting for the ski lift. It was still there, but 38 years later it was on its last legs. So when we finished shooting our film, we took our red bridge there and replaced the old bridge.
Where did you film Winter River’s graveyard?
The graveyard and the church were built in West Wickham in London. It was a beautiful little valley, which gave us the perfect environment to build it in. We built the church and put the graveyard in.
Michael Keaton (pictured) reprises his role as Betelgeuse.
Did you use any other real-world locations?
For Delia’s art gallery [in New York City ], we went to Shoreditch in London. It was a place called Protein Studios , which was perfect because it had an interior next to a street and it was vital that a character could walk straight out of the art show and onto the street. It had the right flow and feel of a hipster-cool area. We went to Princess Helena College in Hitchin, England, for Astrid’s boarding school. It had been a private school, but closed a few years before we arrived. We had to renovate the whole place and make it feel like a high-end New England boarding school. And of course, we had to put one of Delia’s sculptures on the lawn.
How many pieces of Delia’s art did you make?
Lots and lots! That was wild, actually. We had to decide what she’d been making since the first film and where she’d gone. In the end, it was actually Catherine O’Hara herself who came up with a lot of the ideas, and Tim and I came up with the rest. We made all these huge artworks and canvases. All sorts of stuff that’s a pastiche of modern art. A lot of work went into the gallery, although you don’t see it in the film. We did it like a proper art show.
Winona Ryder (pictured, right) returns as Lydia Deetz; Justin Theroux plays Rory, Lydia’s boyfriend.
How did you conceptualize what the various aspects of the afterlife—like the police station and the immigration office—would look like?
The first film set the rules and we wanted this to very much feel like a continuation of that. So we had to stick to the rules of the general look—the patina on the walls, the textures, the use of lighting, all of which we amped up to give it a fresh feel. For Wolf Jackson’s police office I studied all the 80s cop shows and films that I could, to get the essence and then apply the Beetlejuice aesthetic.
How did you design the soul train, a train the dead ride into the afterlife, that is modeled on the TV series Soul Train ?
That was a great set because it was just so much fun. We had a real New York subway train that we brought over and we re-sculpted the front to look like a skeletal, evil face. And then our graphics department went wild. We tried to design the most abstract, surreal subway station we could possibly imagine that would then come to life with disco balls. At one point I had the whole platform built like a proper underlit dance floor, but sadly the budget got the best of me.
Monica Bellucci plays Delores, the undead ex-wife of Betelgeuse.
Is the fall foliage in the film real or did you have to cheat that?
Some of it was real. Some of it was cheated. There was a bit of digital help because we were shooting during the summer. But we filmed the scenes of Astrid riding her bike through Winter River and visiting a house in Melrose, near Boston , and had to pause right before for the actors’ strike. We waited and waited. There were these classic fall colors. We were about to lose them and then the strike finished and we were on a plane the next morning. It was the most beautiful fall day. The weather was right. The leaves were perfect . It looked exactly how we wanted it to look. And we got to shoot our Halloween scenes on actual Halloween.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, starring Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, and Jenny Ortega, is out on September 6.
