In recent years, Pakistan has become more attractive and well-liked as a travel destination. Pakistan has lately been named the world’s top tourist destination for 2020 by an international travel publication, Conde Nast, and is now being sought after by many foreigners and travelers.

Now that we’ve discussed some of the tourist spots in Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan, it’s time to discover the magnificent and historical province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

In addition to sharing a border with Afghanistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also heavily incorporates Afghan culture into its language, attire, cuisine, and cultural activities. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is bestowed with stunning natural beauty, including mesmerizing crystal clear blue lakes, clean valleys, natural forests, and historical sites, some of which trace their origins to the Gandhara culture.

In actuality, KP served as the administrative center of the ancient Gandharan dynasty, and it still contains some of its monuments. The government is working to transform five dams in Haripur, Kohat, Swabi, Nowshera, and Abbottabad into picnic areas for domestic and international travelers. KP also has a good reservoir of water dams.

KPK seems to have it all, so you’ll never run out of ways to sate your inner sense of adventure. So let’s look at the most beautiful places in KPK.

Let’s have a look at the 20 best places to visit in KPK.

15.Fort Chitral

On the west side of the River Chitral, a stunning structure known as the Chitral Fort rises tall. The former rulers of the area previously resided there. The fort was constructed similarly to the Lahore Fort and reflected the Mughal design.

The former rulers liked to have open Kutcher in the secretariat, and under the towering chinar trees, an unique seating arrangement was built up in one area.

You might learn some amazing tales about Chitral Fort from a guide you hire. A 400-man British Army unit was said to have been stranded within the fort, according to one tale. Within a caravanserai from the Mughal era, a public park was created in Peshawar. It used to be where the traders and soldiers would relax. In one of the structures, the government built a museum that contains intriguing items and antiques. Additionally, there are small stores on the property where artisans offer handicrafts and handmade Peshawari shawls.

Gor Khatri excavations in 2007 brought Peshawar’s history back a few centuries. This makes it one of the oldest settlements in Southeast Asia. 13 strata from several civilizations were found by archaeologists excavating the site, ranging in date from the colonial period to the Indo-Greek period around 200 BCE.

The architectural design of the structure appeals to tourists, and many find its past to be fascinating.

18.Khyber Pass

The Khyber Pass, which connects Afghanistan and Pakistan, is the farthest north and one of the most significant. Through this pass, Peshawar and Kabul are connected. Historically, the pass has served as a conduit for invasions into the Indian subcontinent from the northwest.

The dry, fractured hills that go through the pass are also referred to by the moniker Khyber. The Spin Ghar (Safd Kh) Range’s last spurs are formed by them. The Khyber gorge’s beds are two little streams’ origins, one on either side of the connecting hill.

A few miles outside of Jamrud, Pakistan, in the Shadi Bagir gap, the Khyber Pass is a tiny gorge that runs between 600-1,000 feet (180-300 m) high shale and limestone cliffs. When Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, the tribal leaders would congregate in the mosque in order to gather unity amongst Afghans against the Soviets. The mosque has an entrance that leads to a large prayer courtyard.

An ancient Buddhist monastic complex, Takht-e-Bai is a major tourist attraction because of its historical significance. Founded in the early 1 st century CE, it has been listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. This monastery has some of the most significant relics from the Gandhara civilization. The building is located at a serene spot making it a treat for the tourists who can enjoy the rich history and beautiful location. The site got its name from the two wells on the hills. Takht means top and Bahi means spring, which means a spring emerging from the top.

the mud brick structure of Chitral Fort

A magnificent structure standing tall on the western banks of River Chitral, the Chitral Fort was used by the region’s former rulers. The fort resembles Mughal architecture and was set up along the same style as that of the Lahore Fort.

The fort is made of mud-bricks with a lavish use of deodar wood and consists of three portions – the barracks of the troops, secretariat and a residential area that opens up to the garden on the riverside. In the secretariat the then rulers used to hold up open kutcheris and a special seating arrangement was put in place in this area amidst tall chinar trees.

If you hire a guide, he will tell you some interesting stories about Chitral Fort. One of the stories say that a British Army troop having 400 soldiers were besieged in the fort because they helped a prince in the war of succession, which began among Prince Aman-ul-Mulk’s sons in 1892.

It is a public park in Peshawar, built within a Mughal-era caravanserai, where traders and soldiers used to stop by to refresh themselves. It is a fortified compound with two gates – one in the east and the other one on the west. The Gorakhnath Temple is situated in the centre of the caravanserai under a banyan tree, well-maintained by the Hindu community living in Peshawar. The government has built a museum in one of the buildings where important relics and artefacts can be found. There are also small shops in the premises where artisans display handicrafts and hand woven Peshawari shawls.

Interestingly, the excavations that were done in 2007 at Gor Khatri further push Peshawar’s age to a few centuries back, making it one of the oldest cities in South East Asia. Archaeologists that have done excavations at the site have found around 13 layers belonging to different civilisations, dating from the colonial era and going all the way to the Indo-Greek period in 200 BCE.

When you walk out of the western gate of Gor Khatri, you will enter Bazaar Kalan, which is one of the oldest parts of Peshawar. Next to it is the Sethi Mohalla, comprising 6-7 residences and having a main haveli built by Karim Bakhsh Sethi. The main haveli has a courtyard with a centuries-old classic fountain in the middle and colourful windows of the bedrooms open in the lounge area reflecting light from all sides. Tourists marvel at the architectural style of the building and take great interest in the history.

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (/ˌkaɪbər pəkˈtuːŋkwə/; Pashto: خېبر پښتونخوا; Hindko/Urdu: خیبر پختونخوا), commonly abbreviated as KP or KPK, is one of the four provinces of Pakistan. It is located in the northwestern region of the country, along the Afghanistan–Pakistan border, and the city of Peshawar serves as its capital.

While it is the third-largest Pakistani province in terms of both its population and its economy, it is geographically the smallest. The province is home to 17.9 percent of Pakistan’s total population, with the majority of its inhabitants being Pashtuns and Hindkowans. Within Pakistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa borders Punjab, Balochistan, the Islamabad Capital Territory, and the Pakistani-administered territories of Gilgit–Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Once a stronghold of Buddhism, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the site of the ancient region of Gandhara, including the ruins of the Gandharan capital of Pushkalavati (located near modern-day Charsadda). The region’s history is characterized by frequent invasions by various empires, largely due to its geographical proximity to the historically important Khyber Pass.

Although it is colloquially known by a variety of other names, the name “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” was brought into effect for the North-West Frontier Province in April 2010, following the passing of the 18th Constitutional Amendment. On 2 March 2017, the Pakistani government considered a proposal for a merger of the adjoining Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as well as a repealing of the Frontier Crimes Regulation, which Pakistan had inherited from the British Raj in order to govern the region following the partition of India in 1947. However, some political parties opposed the merger and instead called for the FATA to be reorganized as a separate province. However, on 24 May 2018, the National Assembly of Pakistan voted in favor of the 25th Constitutional Amendment, which would merge the FATA as well as the Provincially Administered Tribal Areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa subsequently approved the bill on 28 May 2018; it was signed into law on 31 May by erstwhile Pakistani president Mamnoon Hussain, which officially completed the historic administrative merger process.

Northern parts of the province feature forests and dramatic mountain scenery, as in the Swat District.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sits primarily on the Iranian plateau and comprises the junction where the slopes of the Hindu Kush mountains on the Eurasian plate give way to the Indus-watered hills approaching South Asia. This situation has led to seismic activity in the past. The famous Khyber Pass links the province to Afghanistan, while the Kohala Bridge in Circle Bakote Abbottabad is a major crossing point over the Jhelum River in the east.

Geographically the province could be divided into two zones: the northern zone extending from the ranges of the Hindu Kush to the borders of the Peshawar basin and the southern zone extending from Peshawar to the Derajat basin.

The northern zone is cold and snowy in winters with heavy rainfall and pleasant summers with the exception of the Peshawar basin, which is hot in summer and cold in winter. It has moderate rainfall.

The southern zone is arid with hot summers and relatively cold winters and scanty rainfall. The Sheikh Badin Hills, a spur of clay and sandstone hills that stretch east from the Sulaiman Mountains to the Indus River, separate Dera Ismail Khan District from the Marwat plains of the Lakki Marwat. The highest peak in the range is the limestone Sheikh Badin Mountain, which is protected by the Sheikh Badin National Park. Near the Indus River, the terminus of the Sheikh Badin Hills is a spur of limestone hills known as the Kafir Kot hills, where the ancient Hindu complex of Kafir Kot is located.

The major rivers that criss-cross the province are Kabul, Swat, Chitral, Kunar, Siran, Panjkora, Bara, Kurram, Dor, Haroo, Gomal, and Zhob.

Its snow-capped peaks and lush green valleys of unusual beauty have enormous potential for tourism.

The climate of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa varies immensely for a region of its size, encompassing most of the many climate types found in Pakistan. The province stretching southwards from the Baroghil Pass in the Hindu Kush covers almost six degrees of latitude; it is mainly a mountainous region. Dera Ismail Khan is one of the hottest places in South Asia while in the mountains to the north the weather is mild in the summer and intensely cold in the winter. The air is generally very dry; consequently, the daily and annual range of temperature is quite large.

Rainfall also varies widely. Although large parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are typically dry, the province also contains the wettest parts of Pakistan in its eastern fringe especially in the monsoon season from mid-June to mid-September.

The Swat Valley is often described as the fertile land where there’s a plethora of produce amidst its lush green fields. The climate is very pleasant. There is a rich history of Buddhism just waiting to be discovered. Within the valley, you will find many ancient remains such as monasteries, carvings, inscriptions, forts, and petroglyphs. Locals and tourists call Swat Valley a paradise on earth.

Malam Jabba

Malam Jabba, the only and most incredible Ski Resort in Pakistan, is one to remember for decades after visiting and guaranteed to take your breath away. It is annually open to all visitors every winter. It’s shadowed by the Hindu Kush Mountains and is by far one of the best family getaways full of nature, fun, and adventure. Malam Jabba offers family-friendly ski slopes, including classes for beginners, and thrilling slopes for the more experienced. You’ll be able to get all your gear on-site, so no need to worry about packing any equipment, just bring yourself! The best time to visit for skiing is from January to March, but that doesn’t mean that summers are any less special. Get your adrenaline pumping with zip-lines and trekking down beautiful trails surrounded by greenery in the summers. There are so many wonders and unimaginable sceneries to take in. If all this wasn’t enough, prepare yourself to witness and explore ancient Buddhist Stupas that are over 2,000 years old, and ancient Monasteries scattered around them.

Kalam Valley

Located in Upper Swat, 99km from Mingora, Kalam Valley has so much to offer. The fertile valleys boast gushing streams and lakes where the Swat River gives birth to the Gabral and Ushu Rivers. Though the valley starts at 6600ft elevation, some of its most beautiful tourist attractions go up to 20,000ft high. Be prepared to experience huge glaciers and dense forests on top of Matiltan from where the highest snow-capped peak of Mount Falaksair can be observed. Utror hill station is another serene location surrounded by colorful mountain peaks and Kundol Lake. Gabral is the perfect place to experience medicinal springs and the local Brown Swati Trout Fish. Mahodand Lake, one of the largest and most scenic lakes at 40km from Kalam, is worth a visit and perfect for boating, fishing, and staying overnight. Kandol Lake is another great option at 20km from Kalam. The best option is to stay overnight in Kalam Valley where the hotels are open for you all year long. This way you’ll have enough time to explore these beautiful spots. Scrumptious BBQs, bonfires, and social gatherings are something you can look forward to on your stay there.

Ayubia National Park

For the wildlife lovers out there, you may get very lucky whilst visiting the Ayubia National Park. The protected forest homes many migratory birds such as the Himalayan Cuckoo, Kashmir Nuthatch, and a handful of very special species that are nearly extinct such as the Kalij and Koklass Pheasants. It’s truly a magical experience to camp and indulge in some wildlife watching spotting animals such as the Red Fox, Kashmir Flying Squirrel, or Golden Jackal. If it’s your day, you may just spot the Indian Leopard too. Apart from the wildlife, the park gives home to 104 species of plants including Horse Chestnut, Silver Fir, and Oak. Many of these plants are known to have anti-carcinogenic effects and botanical properties. The trek to the park is kind and easily maneuvered even by children. It’s incredibly rewarding to visit this place on your trip to KPK. To further the experience, you can hike along the pipeline which leads to Dungagali, and from there it’s straight to Muskhpuri.

Nestled high up in the hills of Abbottabad, Mushkpuri is the epitome of nature at its best. Starting from Nathiagali, another MUST-visit location, it’s a three-hour, safe and easy trek to the top. The journey is just as beautiful as the destination, taking you through a spiral of tall pine trees and seasonal flowers carpeting the ground. Another track starts from Dungagali. This option is great for those who want to view Ayubia National Park from up top. The final destination rests approximately 9452 feet above sea level on the second-highest hill of Galyat. Upon arrival, you’re greeted with a beautiful lake that embodies the sky’s reflection within its clear waters. You’ll also be presented with a view of the infamous Kashmir Valley. Not only will you experience absolute serenity and beauty within Mushkpuri, but you’ll be viewing the surrounding locations too. Worth it.

Naran and Kaghan Valley

Though two different places, people visit them together as a two-in-one package. The best place to visit within the valleys is Siri Paye. The meadows are like out of a fairytale, with clouds hanging below your feet amidst the endless and truly magical plains. To make things even better, you can travel into the Siri Paye meadows on horseback. After every vibrant hill crossed there is an even more beautiful one appearing in sight. If you go far enough you can even start to see glaciers. The further you go the more magical and pristine the landscape becomes. The green mountains of Naran Kaghan are just incomparable to any other destination. The best time to visit is in the summer months as these mountains can get very cold. Shogran is an honorable mentionable here as it is in the same area and is truly a wonder on earth. Be sure to consider hiring professional drivers though that can be easily found in these areas when deciding to venture up the mountainous roads.

Takht-i-Bahi

Translating to “throne of the water spring”, this surreal location is an Indo-Parthian archaeological site of a Buddhist Monastery in Mardan. The remarkably well-preserved monastery dates back to the 1st Century CE and was inhabited until the 7th Century. Within the Takht-i-Bahi you’ll find the Stupa Court where a collection of Stupas can be viewed. There are monastic chambers, individual cells settled around a courtyard and dining area. A later constructed temple complex also consists of Stupas and lastly, the Tantric Monastic Complex consists of small, dark cells that have low openings. They’ve been believed to have been used for spiritual, Tantric Meditation. The entire site had been constructed from local stone and then had been mortared with lime and mud. It’s truly an enriching journey to visit this mystical, historical site and to get to know more about the Buddhist heritage of Pakistan.

Kalash Valley

For those craving to delve deep into the culture of KPK, look no further than Kalash Valley located in Chitral. The only conundrum you’ll be facing here is deciding whether the place is more beautiful or the people and their hospitality. Descending from the oldest South Asian tribe, the locals of Kailash will be more than happy to shower you with their glorious culture, ancient language, unique art, and colorful festivals. There are three main valleys to visit. Bamburet being the largest and most populated one is reached by road from Ayun in Kunar Valley. Rimbir is North of Bumburet and lastly, Birir is adjacent to the Kunar Valley, south of Bumburet. The lush green valleys, stretches of tribal villages and colorfully divine fruit farms all await you in Kalash Valley. In plain words, it’s a promised land of dreams.

  Katora Lake

Translating to “Bowl Lake”, the place is exactly what it claims to be, a lake in the shape of a bowl. The turquoise waters are truly mesmerizing from June till October, whilst being eerily frosted over from November till May. Both sceneries are worth it though summers may be easier in terms of climate and traveling safely. You’ll be blown away by the awe-inspiring backdrops here, surrounded by mountains either carpeted with luscious green or chilly white. The glacial water spills down from one point to create a mystical waterfall. The journey is quite a long one to this magical lake, about 10 hours from Islamabad. Once there, you can opt to stay overnight in the fertile Jahaz Banda Meadows to be well-rested for the journey back the next day.

Translating to “tear-drop lake”, the place is exactly what it claims to be, a lake in the shape of an eerie teardrop. Elevated at 13,927 feet above sea level, one of the highest lakes of the Himalaya Range, it’s a site worth visiting. The lake rests within Malika Parbat, “Queen of Mountains”, the highest mountain in the mystical Kaghan Valley. You’ll be blown away by the awe-inspiring backdrops here, surrounded by mountains either carpeted with luscious green or chilly white. The lake stays covered in snow during the whole year apart from July and August. You can reach this hidden gem through trekking via two routes. One option is to go from lake Saif-Ul-Malook, another spectacular site to visit. The other is from Mahandri through Manoor Village. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (abbreviated KP or KPK), borders the rest of Pakistan to the south and east, central Afghanistan to the west, and the Wakhan Corridor to the north.

The region has a varied landscape including rugged mountains, valleys, hills and dense agricultural farms. There are a number of Buddhist archaeological sites from the Gandharan civilisation such as Takht Bhai and Pushkalavati. There are a number of other Buddhist and Hindu archaeological sites including Bala Hisar Fort, Butkara Stupa, Kanishka stupa, Chakdara, Panjkora Valley and Sehri Bahlol.

The region has had other names. In the era of the British Raj , it was generally called the Northwest Frontier . After Pakistan's independence, much of it was known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, FATA . On maps, it was part of the Raj and is now part of Pakistan, but neither Britain nor Pakistan has ever fully controlled the area; the local Pashtun tribal chiefs remain very influential.

In the era of the British Raj , this region was known as the Northwest Frontier and the British called its Pashto -speaking people Pathans; today we would say Pushtuns. It was both a perennial trouble spot and the source of many fine recruits for the empire's forces; there were whole regiments of Pathan irregular cavalry. Today there are many Pushtuns in Pakistan's military.

For decades after Pakistan's independence in 1947, the region was divided into the Northwest Frontier Province and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), then in 2018 they were merged into a single administrative unit, today's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa .

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa offers invitation to a spectacular landscape and cultural diversity. Peshawar is the business and administrative hub of the province though other cities have their places. Some of the tourist’s hotspots include Khyber pass, old interior city, industrial estate famous for smuggled goods, Islamia College, Peshawar fort, (KisaKhawani) story teller bazaar. Its food street is famous for barbecued mutton as well as karahi meat.

There are very amenable people in this area, especially in the mountains in Shandoor and Kalash regions.

Pashto is the main language of the region, and many people have it as a first language. It is also common in Afghanistan. Many people also speak one or both of Pakistan's Urdu or Afghanistan's other main language, Dari (a dialect of Persian). Many of the more educated people speak English.

Other languages spoken in the region include Hindko, Saraiki, Khowar and Kohistani.

Prior permission from the Pakistani government is required before non-Pakistanis can travel to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa given the poor security situation in the region. Such permission, known as a No Objection Certificate (NOC), must be obtained from the Pakistani Foreign Ministry. Failure to obtain an NOC and attempting to enter Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could result in arrest.

Peshawar International Airport ( PEW   IATA ) is in the center of Peshawar. It is served by all Pakistan carriers including national flag carrier PIA. Moreover, many Middle East airlines also serve this airport, such as Emirates, Etihad, Gulf, Kuwait and Qatar airlines.

The connections from other Asian, European and American cities are available via Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad airports. The domestic flights to/from Peshawar Airport are Chitral, Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore.

Chitral Airport ( CJL   IATA ) from Islamabad and Peshawar.

Buses and minibuses run from many parts of the country from here.

Peshawar is connected with Islamabad via Motorway M-1 and via national highway N-5 .

Northwest Pakistan is an exceptionally dangerous area . The locals have a long history of tribal warfare and banditry. Terror attacks are a common occurrence in the region. Before going to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Swat, and Peshawar, check for travel advisories from your government.

The towns bordering tribal areas are not considered particularly safe, and nor are the Afghan-Pakistan border regions, as the Pakistan government has little to no authority in these areas and cannot aid you in an emergency. You should always seek information about off-limits areas before travelling to this region. Prior permission from the Pakistani government is required before non-Pakistanis can travel to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa given the poor security situation in the region. Such permission, known as a No Objection Certificate (NOC), must be obtained from the Pakistani Foreign Ministry. Attempting to enter Khyber Pakhtunkhwa without an NOC could result in arrest.

COVID-19: travel health notice for all travellers

Pakistan travel advice

Latest updates: Health – editorial update

Last updated: August 20, 2024 14:12 ET

On this page

Safety and security, entry and exit requirements, laws and culture, natural disasters and climate, pakistan - exercise a high degree of caution.

Exercise a high degree of caution in Pakistan due to the unpredictable security situation. There is a threat of terrorism, civil unrest, sectarian violence and kidnapping.

Regional advisory - Avoid all travel

  • the area within 50 km of the border with Afghanistan
  • the areas within 10 km of the borders with China, India and Iran
  • the areas within 10 km of the Line of Control, except the official border crossings at:
  • Wagah and the Grand Trunk Road leading there
  • Khunjerab Pass and the Karakorum Highway leading there
  • the section of the Karakoram Highway from Mansehra to Chilas
  • Pakistan-administered Kashmir
  • the province of Balochistan
  • the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with the exception of the following districts where we advise against non-essential travel:

Karachi - Avoid non-essential travel

Avoid non-essential travel to the city of Karachi, due to violence and the risk of terrorism.

The Government of Canada may not be in a position to provide consular assistance to Canadians in areas where:

  • there are serious security concerns
  • the Government of Pakistan prohibits entry
  • advance permission is required for entry

Security situation and elections

There have been ongoing political demonstrations since November 2022. Federal elections took place on February 8, 2024.

Security forces continue to be on high alert in the following cities:

The security situation is evolving and remains unpredictable.

  • Communication networks may be disrupted
  • Roadblocks could lead to significant disruptions to traffic and public transportation, including transit routes to airports

If you are in Pakistan:

  • avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • always be aware of your surroundings when in public places
  • carry photo identification at all times
  • expect an increased presence of security forces
  • be prepared to change your travel plans on short notice
  • monitor local media to stay informed on the evolving situation
  • follow the instructions of local authorities, including curfew orders

Border area with India

The level of tension between Pakistan and India is susceptible to sudden changes. You could experience difficulties when travelling between the two countries and may be subject to scrutiny if officials from either country become aware that you have recently travelled to the other.

The security situation in the Kashmir region, especially along the Line of Control (LoC), which separates India-administered Kashmir in the south from Pakistan-administered Kashmir in the north, and along the working boundary that continues south toward Sialkot, remains volatile. Since September 2016, cross-border gunfire and shelling have been occurring sporadically along the LoC.

Although the Wagah border crossing linking Lahore, Pakistan, to Amritsar, India, is regularly used by international travellers, it remains vulnerable to attack. Security measures are in place. Visitors may experience long delays.

Border areas with Afghanistan, China and Iran

Border areas with Afghanistan, China and Iran often experience terrorist activity, smuggling and violence. With the exception of official border crossings, foreigners are prohibited from travelling within 50 kilometres of the border with Afghanistan.

Bandits in border areas with Afghanistan and Iran are usually involved in drug trafficking.

Sistan-Baluchistan in Iran, which borders Pakistan, is regularly affected by ethnic conflicts and is also a known route for smugglers. Foreign nationals have been the target of kidnappings.

Terrorist attacks may also occur in this province.

If you decide to travel overland to Iran and Afghanistan despite this warning:

  • travel only on main roads
  • travel in organized groups
  • avoid travel after dark

Balochistan

The security situation in the province of Balochistan remains unstable, due to a long-standing nationalist insurgency and government counter-insurgency operations. Insurgents and militants may target commercial spaces and foreigners, in particular those associated with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Attacks on police and security forces occur frequently. Balochistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, is also a known route for smugglers.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province

The security situation in Central and Western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Province, including its capital Peshawar is unstable due to terrorism, sectarian and political violence and high levels of crime. North Waziristan, South Waziristan, and the Khyber District are particularly volatile and continue to be impacted by the security situation in Afghanistan. Attacks on security and military forces occur frequently. Civil unrest also takes place regularly.

Certain sectors of Karachi experience high levels of violence. These include:

  • Orangi Town

Extremist groups are present in some parts of the city and there have been terrorist attacks in recent years on high-profile targets, including the Stock Exchange and Chinese Consulate. Carefully plan any travel to, or in the city. Strikes and protest marches tend to take place in central areas of Karachi. These events may cause travel disruptions throughout the city and lead to violent civil unrest. Other criminal activities and violence that can occur in Karachi include carjacking, armed robbery, kidnapping and murder.

Gilgit-Baltistan

Clashes between protesters and security forces have occurred. Past demonstrations have led to traffic and public transport disruptions. Do not travel by road to Gilgit-Baltistan province.

Many parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province are unstable due to terrorism, violence, and crime rates, including Upper and Lower Chitral districts. Do not travel by road to this area.

Increased terrorist threat

On May 7, 2024, the U.S. Consulate General in Karachi issued the following security alert: "The U.S. Consulate General Karachi is aware of a threat of a terrorist attack at Karachi Port. In response to such situations, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates sometimes restrict access to certain areas for official U.S. government personnel. Karachi Port is temporarily restricted for official U.S. government personnel."

If you are in Karachi:

  • avoid the port and the surrounding area
  • monitor local media for the latest information

Security alert – United States Consulate General in Karachi

There is a high threat of terrorism in Pakistan. The security situation is fragile and unpredictable. Several terrorist groups are present and operate across the country. Incidents are typically attributed to extremism, ethnic divisions, sectarian strife, regional political disputes and the situation in neighbouring Afghanistan. Bombings, shootings and other terrorist attacks have been directed at a wide range of targets and have caused many deaths and injuries.

In the formerly Federal Administered Tribal Area (FATA) and in the province of Balochistan, attacks are frequent and are often directed at security and military forces.

Further attacks are likely. Attacks can take many forms, including:

  • targeted killings and kidnappings
  • armed assaults
  • suicide bombings
  • improvised explosive devices

Some attacks involve detailed planning to maximize casualties through multiple and consecutive explosions. Targets could include:

  • sects or minority groups
  • government and military assets and personnel
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners
  • elections-related events and polling stations
  • civil aviation facilities, including aircrafts

There is an increased risk of attack during religious holidays and days of national significance, such as:

  • National Day (March 23)
  • Independence Day (August 14)
  • the Islamic month of Muharram (particularly on the day of Ashura)
  • the Muslim holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha

Expect heightened security measures and associated disruptions during these periods.

In Islamabad, you should:

  • keep a low profile, particularly in areas regularly frequented by foreigners
  • avoid the Lal Masjid Mosque (also known as the Red Mosque)
  • be particularly cautious in or around western-style restaurants and shopping centres
  • only stay in hotels that have stringent security measures in place, including metal detectors and closed security perimeters

Military activity

Stay away from areas where military or militant activity is taking place.

The risk of kidnapping for ransom is high, especially in Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh. Pakistani citizens are particularly at risk. Express kidnapping also takes place.

  • Use varied and unpredictable routes and schedules when moving from one place to another
  • Maintain a high level of vigilance at all times

Petty crime

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, occurs. Cell phones, credit cards and passports are favourite targets. Credit card fraud is common.

  • Ensure that your personal belongings, passports other travel documents are secure at all times
  • Avoid showing signs of affluence
  • If travelling by car, keep valuable belongings out of sight, windows closed and doors locked
  • Avoid travelling after dusk, particularly in rural areas where road conditions are unsafe
  • Make arrangements to be met at the airport, especially if arriving after dark
  • Verify flight and airport operation details before travelling
  • Remain aware of the security situation on routes to and from airports

Demonstrations and civil unrest

Demonstrations take place regularly. Demonstrations can take place without warning, and some may take on an anti-western tone. They have the potential to suddenly turn violent. Deaths, injuries and widespread violence have occurred at such events. Demonstrations can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Women's safety

Women travelling alone may be subject to some forms of harassment and verbal abuse. Gender-based violence is common in Pakistan. Honour killings and forced marriages are frequently reported.

If you are the victim of a sexual assault, you should report it immediately to the nearest Government of Canada office.

  • Avoid travelling alone, especially at night
  • Remain particularly vigilant in less-frequented areas
  • Be careful when dealing with strangers or recent acquaintances

Advice for women travellers

2SLGBTQI+ persons

2SLGBTQI+ persons could be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or sex characteristics. Human rights organizations have reported discrimination and violence being committed against 2SLGBTQI+ persons in Pakistan, including the denial of basic rights and services, sexual violence and murder. Many hotels and similar establishments may only allow “married couples” to stay together, and same-sex couples should be prepared to stay separately while travelling.

Forced marriages

Forced marriage affecting foreigners occurs. It sometimes occurs without the affected person's prior knowledge or consent.

Some Canadians have been forced into marital arrangements and have been detained against their will. They have been subjected to threats, intimidation and violence by family members.

If you're in Canada

If you're in Canada and you believe that you're being forced to travel overseas or to marry, you should call your local police for assistance.

If you're in Pakistan

If you're in Pakistan and you believe that you're being forced to marry, contact the High Commission of Canada to Pakistan in Islamabad. You may also contact the Emergency Watch and Response Centre .

Family members may retain passports to prevent victims from returning to Canada.

  • Keep digital or physical copies of your travel documents in a safe place
  • General information and advice about forced marriage

Business deals can involve extortion and corruption. All business disputes, including those involving criminality, are subject to Pakistani legal proceedings. The High Commission of Canada cannot intervene on a Canadian's behalf in a private legal matter.

Overseas fraud

Trekking and climbing

No trekking is allowed in the closed zones located near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and near the Line of Control between Pakistan- and India-administered Kashmir. Trekking permits are required by the Government of Pakistan for peaks over 6000m, and in most national parks. Access to roads are limited, and often in very poor condition.

Only experienced climbers should go to the northern mountains of the Himalayas, Hindukush or Karakoram. Because of their great height, the Karakoram Mountains experience heavy glaciation, particularly on the southern, more humid slopes.

If you intend on engaging in trekking activities:

  • never do so alone and always hire an experienced guide from a reputable company
  • buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation from remote areas
  • confirm that the air ambulance firm contracted has a local agent in Pakistan who can ensure that local rescue teams provide the required emergency services
  • ensure that your physical condition is good enough to meet the challenges of your activity
  • ensure that you're properly equipped and well informed about weather and other conditions that may pose a hazard
  • inform a family member or friend of your itinerary, including when you expect to be back to camp
  • know the symptoms of acute altitude sickness, which can be fatal
  • obtain detailed information on trekking routes or ski slopes before setting out and don't venture off marked trails or slopes

In case of air evacuation, advance payment of the total evacuation cost is required from the insurance company before rescue teams will perform rescue operations. The Government of Canada is unable to intervene, provide, or pay for rescue services.

Road travel

Road conditions.

In many urban areas, roads may be narrow, crowded and poorly lit, with limited signage and poor maintenance. Outside major highways and main cities, roads are mostly unpaved and four-wheel drive vehicles may be necessary.

Mountain roads may have steep drops and lack safety barriers.

Weather conditions can change quickly, particularly during winter. Snow, ice, fog, rain can lead to dangerous driving conditions and disrupt travel. Landslides caused by heavy rain can block or wash away roads.

  • Check local news and weather reports along your route before you travel

Driving habits

Drivers can be aggressive and reckless, and they do not respect traffic laws. Accidents are common. If an accident occurs and you feel that your safety is threatened, leave the area and report the accident to the nearest police station.

Checkpoints may be set up without warning.

Karakoram highway/Northern region

Sections can be very narrow with precipitous drops and are sometimes partially obstructed by rock and earth slides.

  • Travel on mountain roads only during daylight hours
  • Consult local authorities regarding road openings, particularly during the monsoon rains and winter seasons
  • Avoid the section of the Karakoram Highway from Mansehra to Chilas

If you chose to drive in Pakistan:

  • avoid driving after dark
  • keep doors locked and windows up at all times
  • leave a travel itinerary with a third party
  • carry photo identification to present at police checkpoints
  • be well prepared and equipped with gasoline, water, food and a cell phone
  • call the police if involved in an accident

Public transportation

There are frequent rail accidents due to low safety and maintenance standards. Railways have been targets for riots and terrorist attacks.

Avoid using public transportation including taxis and trains. If you must use public transportation:

  • use bus lines that provide two drivers if you're travelling long distances
  • use radio-controlled taxis from reputable companies
  • consider using taxi hailing apps in major cities

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that can cause swelling of the brain.  It is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Risk is very low for most travellers. Travellers at relatively higher risk may want to consider vaccination for JE prior to travelling.

Travellers are at higher risk if they will be:

  • travelling long term (e.g. more than 30 days)
  • making multiple trips to endemic areas
  • staying for extended periods in rural areas
  • visiting an area suffering a JE outbreak
  • engaging in activities involving high contact with mosquitos (e.g., entomologists)

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Typhoid is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Travellers going to countries in South Asia should speak to a health care professional about getting vaccinated.

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is caused by parasites spread through the bites of mosquitoes.

Malaria is a risk to travellers to this destination.   Antimalarial medication is recommended for most travellers to this destination and should be taken as recommended. Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic before travelling to discuss your options. It is recommended to do this 6 weeks before travel, however, it is still a good idea any time before leaving.    Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times:

  • Cover your skin and use an approved insect repellent on uncovered skin.
  • Exclude mosquitoes from your living area with screening and/or closed, well-sealed doors and windows.
  • Use insecticide-treated bed nets if mosquitoes cannot be excluded from your living area.
  • Wear permethrin-treated clothing.

If you develop symptoms similar to malaria when you are travelling or up to a year after you return home, see a health care professional immediately. Tell them where you have been travelling or living.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

In this destination, rabies is commonly carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. In this destination, rabies treatment may be limited or may not be available, therefore you may need to return to Canada for treatment.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals).

Polio (poliomyelitis) is an infectious disease that can be prevented by vaccination. It is caused by poliovirus type 1, 2 or 3. Wild poliovirus (WPV1) and/or circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV1 or cVDPV3)) is/are present in this destination.

Polio is spread from person to person and through contaminated food and water. Infection with the polio virus can cause paralysis and death in individuals of any age who are not immune.

Recommendations:

  • Be sure that your polio vaccinations are up to date before travelling. Polio is part of the routine vaccine schedule for children in Canada.
  • One booster dose of the polio vaccine is recommended as an adult .
  • Make sure that the polio vaccination is documented on the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis. This is the only document accepted as proof of vaccination. It is provided at designated yellow fever vaccination centres .
  • Carry the certificate as proof of vaccination when travelling to this destination.

This destination is subject to Temporary Recommendations under the World Health Organization (WHO)’s polio Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

Temporary Recommendations (WHO):

  • Travellers who are visiting for longer than 4 weeks may be required to receive a dose of polio vaccine 1 to 12 months before they leave this destination. This may be required even if you have previously received all the recommended polio vaccine doses as part of the routine vaccine schedule in Canada.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Cholera is a risk in parts of this country. Most travellers are at very low risk.

To protect against cholera, all travellers should practise safe food and water precautions .

Travellers at higher risk of getting cholera include those:

  • visiting, working or living in areas with limited access to safe food, water and proper sanitation
  • visiting areas where outbreaks are occurring

Vaccination may be recommended for high-risk travellers, and should be discussed with a health care professional.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country. The level of risk may vary by:

The virus that causes chikungunya is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can cause fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is a viral disease that can cause fever, pain and bleeding under the skin.  In some cases, it can be fatal.  It spreads to humans through contact with infected animal blood or tissues, or from the bite of an infected tick.  Risk is generally low for most travellers. Celebrations which include the slaughtering of animals and contact with their blood and/ or tissues may increase the risk of exposure to the virus.

Protect yourself from tick bites and wear gloves or other protective clothing if you are in contact with the blood and tissues of  animals, particularly livestock. There is no vaccine available for Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever.

Cutaneous and mucosal   leishmaniasis   causes skin sores and ulcers. It is caused by a parasite spread through the bite of a female sandfly.

Risk is generally low for most travellers. Protect yourself from sandfly bites, which typically occur after sunset in rural and forested areas and in some urban centres. There is no vaccine or medication to protect against leishmaniasis.

  • In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Human cases of avian influenza have been reported in this destination. Avian influenza   is a viral infection that can spread quickly and easily among birds and in rare cases it can infect mammals, including people. The risk is low for most travellers.

Avoid contact with birds, including wild, farm, and backyard birds (alive or dead) and surfaces that may have bird droppings on them. Ensure all poultry dishes, including eggs and wild game, are properly cooked.

Travellers with a higher risk of exposure include those:

  • visiting live bird/animal markets or poultry farms
  • working with poultry (such as chickens, turkeys, domestic ducks)
  • hunting, de-feathering, field dressing and butchering wild birds and wild mammals
  • working with wild birds for activities such as research, conservation, or rehabilitation
  • working with wild mammals, especially those that eat wild birds (e.g., foxes)

All eligible people are encouraged to get the seasonal influenza shot, which will protect them against human influenza viruses. While the seasonal influenza shot does not prevent infection with avian influenza, it can reduce the chance of getting sick with human and avian influenza viruses at the same time.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

Medical services and facilities

Quality of care varies greatly throughout the country. Good health care is available in a small number of hospitals and clinics in some major cities, including in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore. Basic non-emergency medical care is available in major cities but is limited in rural areas. Emergency services, including ambulances, are virtually non-existent in most of Pakistan. Most medical facilities require prepayment in cash.

Medical evacuation can be very expensive and you may need it in case of serious illness or injury.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Pakistan.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Pakistan by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Pakistan to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

The country's customs, laws and regulations adhere closely to Islamic practices and beliefs.

To avoid offending local sensitivities:

  • dress conservatively
  • behave discreetly
  • respect religious and social traditions

Shorts are considered inappropriate attire for both men and women, particularly in remote locations. Women should consider carrying a headscarf with them at all times while travelling in Pakistan.

Couples should avoid physical contact, such as holding hands, in public.

These policies and restrictions may change. Consult with financial authorities such as the State Bank of Pakistan before you travel.

Pakistan is prone to extreme weather events such as:

  • dust storms
  • earthquakes

Extreme temperatures can occur in both summer and winter.

Seismic activity

Severe earthquakes can occur in the western and northern regions of the country. Landslides are possible in affected areas, and strong aftershocks may occur after the initial quake. Transportation, health and telecommunications services may be affected, and land travel could be disrupted.

  • Monitor local news reports
  • Consult advisories from the provincial disaster management authorities

Monsoon and cyclones

The rainy (or monsoon) season extends from June to September. Seasonal flooding can hamper overland travel and reduce the provision of essential services. It can also lead to landslides. Roads may become impassable and bridges damaged.

Flash flooding can occur, including in densely populated areas. There is a risk of flooding along rivers, including the Indus River.

Pakistan's coastline is subject to tropical cyclones, which are usually accompanied by high winds and heavy rain. During any storm, flash floods and mudslides as well as damage to transportation routes and infrastructure may occur.

Russia Travel Advisory

Travel advisory june 27, 2024, russia - level 4: do not travel.

Reissued after periodic review with minor edits.

Do not travel to Russia due to the consequences of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces. U.S. citizens may face harassment or detention by Russian security officials, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, limited flights into and out of Russia, and the possibility of terrorism. The U.S. Embassy has limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia. The Department has determined that there is a continued risk of wrongful detention of U.S. nationals by Russian authorities. U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Russia should leave immediately.

The U.S. government has limited ability to help U.S. citizens in Russia, especially outside of Moscow. The U.S. Embassy is operating with reduced staffing, and the Russian government has restricted travel for embassy personnel. Furthermore, all U.S. consulates in Russia have suspended operations, including consular services.

There have been reports of drone attacks and explosions near the border with Ukraine as well as in Moscow, Kazan, and St. Petersburg. In an emergency, you should follow instructions from local authorities and seek shelter.

Russia may refuse to recognize your U.S. citizenship if you are a dual U.S.-Russian citizen or have a claim to Russian citizenship. Russia has denied consular officers visits to detained dual U.S.-Russian citizens. The Russian government has forced citizens with dual nationality to join the Russian military and prevented them from leaving the country. In 2022, the Russian government mobilized citizens for its invasion of Ukraine. Military conscription continues.

In Russia, the rights to peaceful assembly and free speech are not always protected. U.S. citizens should avoid protests and taking photos of security staff at these events. Russian authorities have arrested U.S. citizens who joined protests. Moreover, there are many reports of Russians being detained for social media posts.

U.S. citizens should know that U.S. credit and debit cards no longer work in Russia. Due to sanctions, sending electronic money transfers from the U.S. to Russia is nearly impossible.

Commercial flight options are minimal and are often unavailable on short notice. If you wish to depart Russia, you should make independent arrangements. The U.S. Embassy has limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in leaving the country, and transportation options may suddenly become even more restricted.

Click  here  for Information for U.S. Citizens Seeking to Depart Russia.

U.S. Embassy staff generally are not allowed to fly on Russian airlines due to safety concerns. Recently, the FAA downgraded Russia's air safety rating from Category 1 to Category 2. Additionally, the FAA banned U.S. flights in some Russian areas, including the Moscow Flight Information Region (FIR), the Samara FIR (UWWW), and the Rostov-na-Donu (URRV) FIR within 160NM of the boundaries of the Dnipro (UKDV) Flight Information Regions. Check the FAA's Prohibitions, Restrictions, and Notices for more information.

Country Summary:

Russian officials have interrogated and threatened U.S. citizens without cause. This includes former and current U.S. government and military personnel and private U.S. citizens engaged in business. U.S. citizens may become victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion.

Russian authorities may not notify the U.S. Embassy about the detention of a U.S. citizen and may delay U.S. consular assistance. Russian security services also target foreign and international organizations they consider “undesirable.”

Russian security services have arrested U.S. citizens on false charges, denied them fair treatment, and convicted them without credible evidence. Furthermore, Russian authorities have opened questionable investigations against U.S. citizens engaged in religious activity. U.S. citizens should avoid travel to Russia.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has destabilized security in southwestern Russia. In October 2022, the Russian government declared martial law in the following border areas with Ukraine: Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, and Krasnodar. Under martial law, authorities can set curfews, seize property, and restrict movement. The Russian government may detain foreigners, forcibly relocate residents, and limit public gatherings. U.S. citizens should avoid all travel to these areas.

Russian authorities have questioned, detained, and arrested people for “acting against Russia's interests.” Local authorities have targeted people for posting on social media or supporting "anti-Russian" groups and punished individuals for criticizing the government or military. The Russian government's current "LGBT propaganda" law bans discussion of LGBTQI+ related topics. In November 2023, the Supreme Court labeled the so-called "international LGBT movement" as extremist. This decision effectively made it a crime to support the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons in Russia.

Terrorists continue to plan attacks in Russia. The March 2024 Crocus City Hall incident proved they can strike suddenly. Terrorists may target tourist areas, transport hubs, and markets. They may also target government buildings, hotels, clubs, restaurants, and places of worship. Parks, events, schools, and airports are also potential targets.  U.S. government employees under Embassy (Chief of Mission) security responsibility are not permitted to travel to the North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mt. Elbrus. U.S. citizens should avoid travel to those areas.

The international community does not recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea and does not acknowledge Russia’s purported annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya. Russia staged its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in part, from occupied Crimea and there is a heavy Russian military presence in these areas. There is intense fighting across these regions and Russian authorities there have abused both foreigners and locals. Authorities have specifically targeted individuals who are seen as challenging Russia’s authority.

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv administers consular services to U.S. citizens in Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya. However, the conflict limits the Embassy's ability to help U.S. citizens in these areas.

KP to become hub of tourism investment after completion of ITZs

KP to become hub of tourism investment after completion of ITZs

ISLAMABAD-The speakers at the tourism conference on Thursday said that after the completion of Integrated Tourism Zones (ITZs), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) will become a hub for tourism investment. They said that the all three KP government’s ITZs including Ganool, Mankiyal and Madaklasht were important projects of the provincial government, which would bring revolutionary changes in the provincial tourism. An Investment Readiness Conference for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Integrated Tourism Zones (ITZs) was held at a local hotel here in Islamabad to mobilize private sector investments and to promote responsible tourism. The event was attended by a huge number of national level investors. Presidents of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), representatives of PTDC, KP-BOIT and other trade associations were present on the occasion. The speakers said that after the completion of three ITZs, there was possibility of adding $10 billion to the provincial economy. Director General KP Culture and Tourism Authority (KP CTA) Muhammad Bakhtiar Khan in his keynote address, stated, “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is well positioned as a preferred tourism destination in Pakistan. It has a considerable competitive advantage due to natural endowments and a culture of hospitality. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is not only focusing on creating employment opportunities by promoting tourism activities but also making efforts to conserve the natural and cultural assets by promoting responsible tourism in the province.” He said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Department was committed to its objective of making the province a preferred tourist destination. Efforts are being made to not only develop new tourist sites but also better manage the existing tourist areas, he added and said that it is important for us to prepare the sites for handling the tourist influx during peak season and to harness this opportunity to create economic opportunities for the communities, he expressed. Chief guest Sardar Yasir Ilyas, former President ICCI appreciated the government of KP efforts in promoting sustainable tourism and urged the local investors to make investments in the tourism sector. He also explained steps taken by the Chamber and the government in facilitating investments in this sector. It is important to note that Upper Swat and Mansehra were impacted by the recent floods and there is thus a compelling case for disaster mitigation in order to conserve nature, and protect tourism assets and livelihoods of communities that rely on tourism receipts. Ali Asghar, Chief Economist KP, in his welcome address, briefed on sustainable tourism initiatives undertaken by the government, “The use of innovative approaches including, development planning for new and existing destinations, public-private partnerships, reduced carbon footprint and heritage preservation are at the center of project implementation.” The government is contributing extensively towards tourist facilitation, building the sector’s resilience against climate change and geophysical hazards and local economic development, he said. Ms. Kiran Afzal, Senior Private Sector Specialist, World Bank in her remarks congratulated the Department of Tourism and project team of the KITE project on achieving this milestone and mentioned that ITZs can especially help the tourism sector of KP in attracting investments which will lead to economic and social uplift of local communities. An exclusive discussion on the title ‘Real-estate and Tourism, A Public Private Partnership approach’ was part of the conference. The panel shed light on various aspects of sustainable tourism and opportunities for the local economy. The panelists appreciated the efforts of DoT, CTA and KITE project and recommended practical ways for the immediate implementation of these plans. The ITZs is a maiden concept in Pakistan which aims to open new destinations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to promote responsible tourism by suggesting diversity and quality in the tourism offering of these destinations and provide guidance for tourist planning and destination management activities. The ITZ feasibility and master plans were prepared by the KP’s Department of Tourism (DoT) through the World Bank sponsored Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Integrated Tourism Development (KITE) project with the support of international experts over a period of one year. The provincial authorities and other speakers shared the opportunities for private sector investments with the participants. As part of this exercise, customized plans for each destination have been prepared and will be used to invite investments from the private sector. It is expected that this approach of destination management will lead to improved visitor experience, better regulation of sites and mobilization of resources from the private sector for the identified investments.
