2004 6.0L excursion crank no start

  • Add to quote

I'm lost. Parked truck. Running fine. Went to start and cranks but won't start. Injector pressure between 600 and 1000 when cranking. Had a friend diesel mechanic that works at for ford dealership come check it out. He said the engine was not syncing. He put a crank angle sensor in it. Now engine is syncing but injector pressure now ar 10. Installed new ips last night. No change. Oil pressure guage on dash never moves. I've never looked at it when cranking to see if it does move. Cant figure out what could have possibly changed that would cause Icp to drop after installing crank sensor. I do have a large oil filter relocation kit. Don't know if that would cause a low oil pressure while cranking and make the guage/switch on dash not respond. Any ideas of anything we could have done when replacing crank sensor that would cause this. Thanks in advance.. Jimmy

Try unplugging the ICP and see if it will start. Is your ICP on the RH valve cover or under the turbo?

Under the turbo Under the turbo.

The aluminum hpop in the early truck aren't the best how many miles are on ur truck. What's ur Ipr % reading

This is the early style oil system then. I would try unplugging the ICP first. The early style are known for getting oil saturated and failing. Examine the plug and harness in the area too, as these are often oil fouled as well and need to be replaced. If that doesn't work you really need a way to read IPR desired vs. ICP to see if its building pressure.

How many miles on the truck?

2000 7.3L Excursion Starting Issues

  • Add to quote

I picked up the Excursion a few days ago, theft light blinking rapidly – was said to be because of the 6 position chip that was installed. Started everytime with no issue. Come to the problem, the truck sat overnight for 1 day without being plugged in (it was the coldest day we've had this week), and yesterday would not start, cranked but would not fire – theft light still blinking. Mechanic thinks its a PATS issue because of the theft light (his scanner showed U1147/U1262 - which seems to be PATS/PCM communication, but if PATS is disabled - with the tune - then I guess this should happen), and wanted to have it towed to Ford to diagnose – I of course opted not to do that being that the light had always blinked for me every day, and after reading through pages and pages, seems that the theft light does blink rapidly with a 6 position chip, and is 'normal'. Maybe, maybe not? So, after 2 hours of trying to get it to start, we got nothing. Tried the PATS reset procedure, start in neutral, keep the key in for 15 minutes, etc etc. At this point the batteries were drained, and wouldnt even crank. At last resort I thought why not plug in the block heater maybe it was too cold, and at the same time we put a jumper box on one of the batteries. Not even two minutes later, we inserted the ignotion key in and out of the lock cylinder a few times for ####s and giggles and went to start it and it fired right up. Not sure if it is related to PATS, the batteries, some other starting issue, or from it being so cold (not sure the block heater plugged in for 2 minutes would 'warm it up' but I could be wrong)? It has only been a day, but since that time it has started every time, drives fine – theft light still blinking. My question is, does this sound like something with the PATS, or loose wires or something electronic like that, or does it sound like some other starting issue? The battery voltage on the dash indicator seems good, but could it be a battery issue some how the truck not getting enough juice to start after sitting? Could the truck have been too cold and warmed up after 2 minutes with the block heater? Anyone run into something similar? Please help, thank you in advance.

How long have you had this Excursion? Did it start this morning in the cold? Did you have it plugged in? Here's what I would probably do: 1. Ignore the blinking light. Mine has been blinking for 80k+ miles and it hasn't caused an issue. 2. Watch this video. 3. Get an injector buzz test performed. If it is a hard start/no start when cold, but starts much easier after the block heater is plugged in, there's a very good chance that you have sticking injectors like the one vehicle in the video.

Less than a week. It didn't start one time - thinking something simple as the batteries or maybe the injectors. It appears the tune is pretty new, and it doesn't blow any black smoke in any setting, even on 140. I've read some places that the newer tunes don't smoke.. Not sure how true that is - or does it sound like a problem by not smoking on the 140 tune?

No smoke is preferable to me. Smoke = wasted fuel. Did you watch the video? He writes that 3 or more sticking injectors will cause a no start. My bet is that you have some sticking that need replaced. It wouldn't hurt to have the batteries tested, as well. I run Interstate batteries. Also, read this. Sounds like the same issue to me. https://swampsdiesel.com/files/7.3LInjectorDiagnostic.pdf

I agree, my THEFT light blinks due to my TW chip. Another possible issue could be a weak starter which would pull more juice and turn over slower causing poor starts when cold.

so, truck would only start when plugged in. and fired right up each time after being plugged in. both the glow plug and intake heater relay turned out to be bad. waiting to swap these out, will post up if still no dice. I have to investigate the tune, to see whats going on with that. fun fun. thanks for the input everyone!

2001 Diesel Excursion won's start!

  • Add to quote

I have a 2001 Ford Excursion with the 7.3L Diesel. It on occasion will not start hot or cold. Most problems are with the cold start. It cranks well. Glow plugs I'm assuming are working based on voltage changes when the key is turned on and the glow plugs are heating. After about 90 seconds the voltage increases when glow plugs have stopped heating. It then cranks normally and will not start. I drained and refilled the oil reservoir, cleaned and reseated all fuses, relays and sensor connections. I have just had the cam sensor replaced at the Ford dealer under the new recall (tach shows RPMs when cranking). Once started, it runs perfectly. Shut it down and it sometimes will not restart. Only errors were CAM sensor prior to sensor replacement and a P603. I can wait a while go back out and it will start up with nothing being done. Any help is greatly appreciated. It is currently dead in a parking lot. Started fine this morning (39deg), ran to the store 15 min. Came out, and it won't start! Cranks well. I am new to this forum. I have viewed many posting and I have gotten a lot of great information from this site.

Well, I went back to get the truck and yes it started. I did have to jump start it this time though after many earlier attempts.

Similar Problem! Looking for a solution, too... Hi! I left my truck at work today, too. I've got a '99 F-350 Powerstroke Diesel. Today I drove it at lunch-time without a problem. Went out about four hours later to come home and started the truck. It ran for about 5 to 10 seconds and then died suddenly. Engine cranks normally, and I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the key to the warm-up position, but there is no evidence of fuel (smoke of any color) in the exhaust. Tomorrow, I hope to trace to a fuel cut-off solonoid--I'm hoping to find one in the fuel circuit, but I haven't looked to see that there is one in the system, yet. :-( It may be a fuse or a failed solonoid, or it could be something I am not yet aware of...I am open to suggestions. Thanks!! -larry

hey guys welcome to the ORG ! Out of curiosity, when the truck cranks and won't start, what happens if you jump it? Will it start then?

I haven't tried to jump start it, yet. It cranks over with good speed--the batteries are solid. -larry

I had a similar problem not too long ago, random no starts, but plenty of crank speed. If it would not start, and I jumped it, it would fire right up. The batteries seemed good, even had them tested, I racked my brain trying to figure it out. I replaced the batteries, and no problems since then. I'm not suggesting for you guys to go buy new batteries, but a jump start test may not be a bad idea, hey it;s free:thumb: I'm sure some other folks will chime in on this as well, there is no doubt a number of other things it could be.

Thanks for the insight. I plan to try the jumpstart tomorrow, when I go to troubleshoot it. The batteries are less than a year old, and were replaced as a set then. -larry

  2. Excursion won't start

If the starter will not turn the engine over then probably it is the battery but since you said it is cranking (engine rotating) then it is not the battery. Check your fuses there is one that powers the coils and fuel injectors. If it is blown it will crank (engine rotating) but not start. Perry.
