Very clean and comfortable considering this is not a cruise ship. Dinner was well presented though on set menus the choice was limited and quantities were not over generous. Excellent on buffet evenings and could do with more of these. Breakfast buffet very good.

 Just back from our first ever cruise, which was on the Fred Olsen - Bolette to the Nordic Capitals 

I've got to say it was a fantastic experience, the ship is just the right size to enjoy the destinations, plenty of space to chill, or enjoy the entertainment, brilliant food and drink.

The staff were so friendly and helpful, it was like being with family after a day

I will definitely cruise again with Fred.

Glad you enjoyed it. We liked Bolette as well earlier this year.

I think after the Bolette the block of flats would be to big and busy.

The Philippine, Thai, Indian etc crew couldn't do enough for you, with a brilliant attitude and work ethic, shame that for that level of service, they are probably getting paid half of what a British crew would.

Looking forward to going again and maybe trying one of the sister ships

I understand that the crew on FOCLs are covered by International Transport Federation agreements and that in the past the wages paid are average or above for the industry.

Historically, all "Hotel Staff" staff (Bar staff, Dining Room staff, Cabin Stewardess and so on) have a monthly guaranteed wage paid to them by the Company and, as per the ITF approved Collective Bargaining Agreement. I believe that agreement is between the Norwegian Ship Owners Association and the Norwegian Maritime Unions.

The various companies that make up the cruise element of the Olsen Empire , Including FOCLs, all come under the immediate control of First Olsen Holdings Ltd of which both Fred. Olsen Sen and Anette Olsen are directors. 

Their last accounts are dated 31 December 2021. At that time they had 1,211 officers and crew whom they paid a total in annual salaries of £23,832,000 (including social  security and other pension costs)... my back-of-an-envelope calculation shows that averages £19,679 per person... although a Captain is paid more than a cadet!

Glad to be proved wrong, as they definitely deserve it.

The speciality restaurants colours and Taste (Asian) has its own separate area   and Vasco (Indian)  off The View when pre-booked both at £10  (£15 on board) are a must if you enjoy that food.  The ship is old built 2000 for Holland American Line , The main decor is very smart but the cabins are a bit old fashioned. You also may run the risk of getting a terraced  cabin on Deck 3 which some passengers do not like as it is on the Promenade Deck. The Observatory at the Bow of the ship deck 9 in my opinion is one of the best of the fleet. Braemar used to be my favourite but Bolette has taken over.

They are neither really. It’s a cabin with patio doors that open right out onto the promenade deck. The glass is one way for privacy and the cabins have allocated deck loungers.

Fred advertises these terrace cabins as "balcony cabins." Cabins that really have balconies are some time referred by Fred as "private balcony" cabins... perhaps that's "the Olsen way." If you remember the rather uneasy veranda cabins that Fred added to the Boudicca... these terrace cabins on the old HAL ships have something of the same awkwardness about them... people who have "paid" for a bit of the prom deck as their "balcony" and others who feel a bit awkward when they can't linger on the rail or sit there. (no public seating only loungers reserved for terrace cabin cruisers)

Hi Jean.. we know each other from elsewhere.. and we are on Bolette on Friday, and I'll let you know on our return.  My brother loves it ands only came back a month ago and is off again in two weeks.

The terrace cabins sound like those on Iona that front onto the promenade but with no rail.. ie patio doors straight on to the deck.  I think they are either loved or hated.

The Fred website has been sorted for a while, the Terraced Cabins are correctly described in the booking system.  There are lots of steamer chairs on the prom deck, only the ones by the Terrace cabins are reserved - the rest are public seating.  Nothing uneasy about the previous Terrace Balconies on Boudicca at all, we had been in them - they were raised a bit above the prom deck and had their own railed off area.  At least they were smoke free. 

We would not want a terrace cabin on the new ships though, partly because the prom decks are completely in shade.

There are a number of reviews on this site, I did a very detailed one about Borealis (basically the same ship) when she first sailed regards the differences from the previous ships.  We have not been on Bolette since March (also onboard in December).

There was plenty of seating area in the lounges and outside, so should still be fine if the ship was full as our cruises were when there was still social distancing with some seating not being used.  You could get views off the ship from a number of lounges, so the ships do not feel closed in.  We  have done some cruises in inside cabins and they were fine - very big with a generous seating area.  The window cabins have big windows which are better than the portholes we had used for some Fred cruises.  Fred still allows smoking on balconies, so we would not have an interest in them at any price.  The self service has lots of space and good views from the seating as well.  

Although there were teething problems as the ships started sailing, the staff are still very good and there was obviously extra training in place,  including with someone from head office, on a more recent Balmoral Cruise (the second after she started sailing), as there were a number of new staff.

The big advantage to us is the sailings from the North, which I know does not apply to you, but there are some good deals to be had at present for late bookings.  We have never liked the late booking as always prefer to choose our cabin, though Fred will move you if there is a problem with a cabin and another is available.  We are trying other options, though not impressed at all with a recent alternative.  We have some P&O ones booked for the winter, but wanted Balcony cabins on the bigger ships (especially Azura).  We have no future Fred cruises booked, though will have to see what the future holds.  Land holidays have more appeal to us at present.

Hmmm, now I have to work out who you are!!  But yes now I know what is meant by terrace cabin.  Fronts onto the Prom.  Awful.  Well we will still go our inside.  It suits us and I feel like a change from P&O.  Still got Aurora in October 2023.

 My friend has just returned from a British Isles cruise on Bolette and absolutely loved it.  She said the food was great, the entertainment was good and she had a great time.  Think we will have to give it a try.

That's good to hear. We are sailing on Bolette on the Scandinavian City Break cruise in September.

I have recently returned from a cruise on Bolette and had an oceanview cabin on floor 1. Windows were nice and large, the beds were comfortable, lots of room to put clothes etc and the shower was large and wonderful. That said we did hear one lady say that there was a constant loud humming from a door opposite her cabin that she could hear throughout the night so some cabins might possibly have a noise problem or she might be a very light sleeper. Can anyone confirm if this is a problem? I was fine in my cabin no complaints at all.

We'll let you have our thoughts on noise once we return from our Scandinavian City Break cruise later this month. We are also on Deck 1.

Did actually go round deck 1and deck 2 to see if I could hear anything that might be a problem , these are the cabins where there might be an issue for some people.

Deck 1 = cabins 1836, 1855, 1916 &1962,

Deck 2 = cabins 2631, 2628, 2640, 2704

To be fair, this was only noise in the corridor and it might not go on all night and not everyone would hear it in their cabin.

As I said earlier my cabin was great with no noise issues

When being able to choose cabins we would choose cabins between the front and mid ship lifts on those ex HAL ships, we have been in three of those and they were fine, but on deck 2 not deck one.  We had noticed there is some noise/vibration in the corridors between the mid and rear lifts on decks 1 and 2 on both those ships, so we would prefer to avoid those and we would also avoid cabins between the mid and rear lifts on deck 3 as the kitchens are above those cabins, so noise may be heard there with trolleys being moved around or from kitchen equipment, but I have no knowledge of individual cabins there - they may all be fine on Bolette, just something we are aware of from the past and prefer to avoid.  When choosing a cabin we always go by the often recommended advice of, "cabins above, below and to either side". 

We have also been in a deck three cabin about 5 or 6 back from the rear lifts and you do hear the propellers when the ship is maneuvering into port, but once docked it has been fine, so we could get back to sleep if we wanted to and it was quiet throughout the rest of the day/night.  We would not have been in the cabin as the ship left port, but assume we would have heard noise then as well.  It was a saver fare cruise so were happy to stick with that cabin as good in other respects.  The cabins on deck 1 and 2, to the rear of the lifts, (especially a distance back), would also likely have issues with that propeller noise - TBH I would expect it low down and to the rear on any ship.

I am very sensitive to any noise disturbance, so we are very picky about cabin locations, but many cabins which we prefer to avoid, may well be fine for others.  Fred will move you if you have problems and a quieter cabin is available though, even on a saver fare, so worth asking if your cabin is a problem.

 Sorry don't know - I have been on the Bollette in an inside  cabin in  25xx where xx was a low number. Heard no noise overnight and slept well.

During the past 10 months we've slept in three different cabins on the Bolette and all would have been very quiet if it hadn't been for bawdy behaviour by Fred Olsen staff late at night.

We have just booked a cruise on Bolette for January 2023.It will be interesting to see how she compares to Borealis which we sailed on last April and enjoyed.

Well having just returned from our Scandinavian City Break cruise on Bolette, I can't fault her or the staff.

We were in an outside cabin, number 185* on deck 1. The cabin was spacious with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. There was no disturbing noise or vibration and even the roof mounted air conditioning outlet was very quiet.

The ship is in beautiful condition and spotlessly clean in all areas. It was obvious that a lot of money had been spent on the refurbishment following the acquisition from HAL. 

Food choice and quality, entertainment, lounges and other facilities were excellent.

I thought the drinks prices were very reasonable. The gratuity policy at £5 per person per day was not out of order in my opinion, especially given the service we received across the whole ship.

All the staff were so cheerful and obliging. Nothing was too much trouble. 

The boarding and disembarkation process also went very smoothly.

The only hiccup we had is that the £25 per person on board spending offer had not been added to our account. But after a quick discussion with the customer services team on day 2, this was quickly resolved.

This was our first cruise as a couple without our children or my parents and we decided that the Fred Olsen way of doing things suited us perfectly. I don't think it would be great for families with young or teenage children as the entertainment and activities are orientated around those of us who are getting a little long in the tooth!

We booked a last minute deal and at £499 each, for 6 nights cruising, I think it was an absolute bargain.

As with previous cruises, we prefer to do our homework in advance on the ports of call and then do our own thing on arrival. So I can't comment on any of the tours organised by Fred.

I do hope FO can weather the current challenges in the industry as we will certainly look to book again next year if there are any more last minute offers to be had.

I have a cruise in mind for 2024, but not at the prices being offered at the moment.  Will wait until a couple of months before and see if they come down.  The ship sounds great though.

Looking forward to the African Adventure in November…..not been on Bolette but have enjoyed long cruises on Black Watch and Balmoral so hoping this will be as good.

Bolette is in Falmouth for repairs.  Nice to know our shipyards are being used.

but lets hope they test carefully before sailing, you may recall that last summer (was it?) Balmoral had not even got outside St Anthony head before they realised there was an engine problem and she had to return to the dry dock.

Fred. Olsen Offers Free Drinks on Select 2024 and 2025 Sailings

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is offering guests a free drinks package on select 2024 and 2025 voyages booked by October 31, according to a press release.

Sailing aboard the Bolette, Borealis and Balmoral, itineraries included in the offer will feature visits to Christmas markets in the Baltic, exploring Morocco and the cliffside towns of the Amalfi Coast as well as the chance to join a Mystery Cruise.

Sailings are available from Southampton, Dover, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Newcastle and Rosyth, with durations ranging from five to 22 nights.

Doug Glenwright, director of customer experience at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “Here at Fred. Olsen Cruises, we channel our 175 years of experience into making every single day on board special for our guests.

Fred. Olsen 7 night mystery cruise where the destination is kept secret

I f you have a sense of adventure, you may want to jump on board the new Fred. Olsen mystery cruise where the destinations are kept secret.

The seven-night trip starts at Liverpool on December 15, 2025, and is new to the cruise company's roster of journeys for the 2025/26 season. While a question mark remains over the itinerary, potential passengers will already know what they can expect if they step aboard the Fred. Olsen Bolette.

The Bolette liner is one of Fred. Olsen's flagships and is named after Fred Olsen's great grandmother. With 690 cabins, the Bolette can carry 1,338 guests and 657 crew members. The Bolette is the ship for a number of cruises including the two night mini cruise for £349 and the cruise to the volcanic land of fire and ice also from Liverpool.

It has a number of dining options with everything from traditional afternoon tea to daily buffets. The ship also has swimming pools, jacuzzis, dance classes, evening shows and cookery demonstrations so you will be spoilt for choice from the moment you step aboard.

They also have a full spa on board in case you want to use the mini cruise as a chance to unwind and relax. So while you sail away to the undisclosed location you can enjoy cruising luxury from £899 per person.

Commenting on the new cruise route for the 2025/26 season, Fred. Olsen said: "As a family-run business, we are free to do things a little differently, and our mystery cruises are a great example of exactly that. Your itinerary is kept secret – with only our journey planners (and of course our navigational team) knowing the full details.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines expands independent exploration options with TUI Musement

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has partnered with TUI Musement to offer guests greater flexibility in exploring destinations independently during their cruises.

TUI Cruises ' sister brand TUI Musement (a global tours and activities provider part of TUI AG) enables tourists to explore ports of call at their own pace by offering access to thousands of attractions and activities. These include booking tickets for cultural landmarks like the Chocolate Museum in Cologne or archaeological sites in Athens , as well as more personalized experiences such as bike rentals in Amsterdam , hop-on-hop-off bus tours in various cities, and tiramisu-making classes in Italy.

From September to December 2024, Fred. Olsen's smaller ships - Bolette , Borealis , and Balmoral - will visit a variety of destinations including the Azores, Norwegian Fjords, Iceland, and the Adriatic coast, providing numerous opportunities for independent exploration.

The collaboration with TUI Musement integrates seamlessly with Fred. Olsen’s digital platform, allowing guests to easily book activities online for all ports of call through their MyCruises account or by visiting fredolsencruises.musement.com.

A couple moved onto a never-ending, around-the-world cruise that's been stuck at port for 3 months — see inside the Villa Vie Odyssey ship

• Villa Vie says its residential cruise ship Odyssey will set sail on September 9 or 10 following a three-month delay.
• Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin left their home in Hawaii in the spring to move onto the ship.
• The couple said they were "very impressed" with Villa Vie Odyssey despite its delays — take a look inside.

Villa Vie Odyssey looks like any other cruise ship, complete with a modern pool deck, a buffet, a pickleball court, and excited travelers.

But Villa Vie Residences' 509-cabin vessel won't operate conventional Caribbean cruises or Alaska sailings.

Instead, the residential ship is readying to embark on a never-ending vacation that would circumnavigate the world every 3 ½ years, stopping at 147 countries and 425 destinations along the way — all while providing travelers with the comforts of a traditional cruise liner.

But not without hiccups. The ship has been stuck in Belfast, Northern Ireland for more than 3 months.

The cruise was initially scheduled to set sail in May following the company's acquisition of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines' more than 30-year-old Braemar vessel, now renamed Villa Vie Odyssey , in December 2023.

However, Villa Vie has said issues like the aging ship's rudder stocks and recertification have since delayed its departure.

Mikael Petterson, the founder and CEO of Villa Vie, told Business Insider in an email in September his "best guess" is that the residential vessel would set sail on September 9 or 10 with some changes to the itinerary.

"But it's a moving target if it's either of those days," he said.

The uncertainty isn't worrying would-be residents Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin.

The couple, both 54, uprooted their lives in Maui, Hawaii, in the spring to move onto Villa Vie Odyssey in May. Since then, they — along with another 100 to 150 guests — have stayed in the UK in anticipation of its departure.

Residents can spend their days on Odyssey but aren't allowed to stay overnight yet. In the interim, Petterson said the company is providing these would-be residents with lodging, shuttles to and from the ship, food, and drinks.

"We're stuck in the harbor, but we've met some really cool people from all walks of life," Bodin told BI. "We all have something in common. We're a little crazy and want to see the world."

'We went pretty much every day for two weeks and spent all day there until they kicked us off,' Canen said.

Canen spent much of these two weeks at Villa Vie Odyssey's business center, designed for residents like her who plan to work remotely at sea.

According to the couple's video tour of the ship — posted on their aptly named " Living Life on a Cruise " YouTube channel — the coworking space has shared desks, private offices, and conference rooms.

Villa Vie said the ship is also equipped with Starlink , an increasingly common amenity on cruise vessels.

Bodin, however, preferred to edit their YouTube videos in the observatory lounge.

The observatory is one of five bars and lounges on Odyssey. As its name suggests, the bright space has large windows with sprawling views of the ship's surroundings.

It's also furnished with a piano, which Bodin said has been frequented by a fellow resident and skilled pianist. "I'm sitting there getting a private piano concert."

That's not to say Villa Vie hasn't been providing its guests with professional onboard entertainment.

According to the couple's video , Villa Vie Odyssey has hosted live bands at the Coral Club and had a large Olympics viewing screen at the Neptune Lounge.

In the meantime, residents also have an open bar, like the one at Morning Light Pub.

"They're schmoozing us a bit to keep us happy," Bodin said. "They're almost being too serviced-minded. I don't need to be pampered all the time."

Besides drinks, the roomy watering hole is home to the ship's dartboard, which joins the outdoor shuffleboard, stack of board games, and, of course, pickleball court as onboard activity options.

Like any traditional cruise ship, Odyssey also has a fitness center, spa, and modern pool deck with two jacuzzis.

But unlike most cruise vessels, guests have access to the ship's laundry room.

Laundry could be one of the only chores guests have to do, but even then, it's not required.

Villa Vie said it'll provide residents with laundry and housekeeping services twice a week.

No need to cook or clean either — the ship has 3 restaurants, 2 of which are complementary.

In the morning, travelers like Canen and Bodin can wake up to the buffet at Palms Cafe, which offers breakfast options such as bread, fruits, cheeses, and an omelet station.

For dinner, the couple said they've been especially partial to the Grill's "really good barbecue."

To residents like Canen and Bodin, these spaces aren't just bars and lounges — they're living rooms.

As for their bedroom, the duo will be slumbering in their "obstructed view cabin."

The room is small, and a lifeboat obstructs its view, but they've already started to make it their home.

They've added risers under their bed to create additional storage. They also plan to remove the pullman bed to make space for a large world map, which they'll annotate as they continue their global journey.

Canen and Bodin declined to disclose the price of their accommodation, but windowless inside cabins are currently listed at $100,000, while those with ocean views are $50,000 more.

They'll also have to pay $3,500 in monthly fees.

Still, Canen said life on Maui was "way more expensive" than the Odyssey. "We're traveling on a budget. It's very affordable for the two of us."

You can explore cultural customs and experience a host of different tastes and smells, such as in Tangier, where you can indulge in tagine and refreshing mint tea, while in Tenerife, try the papas arragudas (wrinkly potatoes with spicy Mojo sauce). Here, you can discover Spain's tallest mountain, Mount Teide, which offers sweeping views across the surrounding islands, before continuing on to Fuerteventura, noted for its gorgeous sandy beaches and home to the majestic volcano of Calderón Hondo, close to Lajares, a quiet village nestled in the volcano's shadow.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat. 

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.
