1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager review: Our expert's take

Plymouth, one of America’s oldest automotive nameplates, has faded in the last three years as Chrysler poured its resources into rebuilding its higher profile Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler brands.

Asthe 1996 model year gets under way, you’ll find just two vehicles are in the Plymouth lineup: the popular Neon compact and this week’s test vehicle, the Voyager minivan.

But Plymouth won’t be left high and dry for long. Smoother sailing – in the form of a new marketing strategy and fresh products – is on the way.

The new strategy: Plymouth products will be less expensive than Dodge and Chrysler vehicles and will be aimed at value-conscious, budget-minded buyers.

The new vehicles: Next spring a new midsize sedan called the Plymouth Breeze, an offshoot of the Dodge Stratus/Chrysler Cirrus, joins the Plymouth lineup. Sometime after the Breeze appears, Chrysler plans to add the Prowler – a flashy, retro-styled convertible hot rod – to Plymouth’s portfolio.

Until the new vehicles arrive, the all-new Voyager minivan will be Plymouth’s high-profile vehicle.

PERFORMANCE

The Voyager is available with numerous drivetrain combinations that range from a 2.4-liter, 150-horsepower four-cylinder engine and three-speed automatic transmission to a 3.8-liter, 166-horsepower V-6 and four-speed automatic with all-wheel drive.

Our test vehicle came with the midrange engine -a 3.3-liter V-6 – and four-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain adds $815 to the base price.

I found Grand Voyager’s performance to be quite good in all situations. This smooth and quiet-running engine is very responsive, providing ample verve from a stop. Such responsiveness makes city driving much more enjoyable.

There was also plenty of power available when I accelerated into fast-moving traffic. I heard the engine make noise only when the tachometer needle reached 5,000 rpm, and even then the muted whine it made was pleasing.

The Voyager’s four-speed automatic is the smoothest shifting automatic transmission I have yet to test from Chrysler. The transition from one gear to the next is close to seamless.

I would describe the Voyager’s performance as very carlike. It performs as well as the average midsize sedan. Acceleration didn’t suffer, even when the seven-passenger van was loaded with people.

Fuel economy is excellent for such a large vehicle. The Grand Voyager runs on the least expensive grade of unleaded. Fuel mileage came in at 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Unlike other minivans, the Voyager doesn’t have a stiff, bouncy trucklike ride. Rather, it rolls over the pavement in near silence and without any harsh movements from the suspension system.

In fact, the Voyager is the first minivan I’ve tested that rides like a luxury car. The van dips gently in one fluid movement when it rolls over a bump.

The Grand Voyager is the long wheelbase version; i t’s 6 inches longer than the base Voyager. That and 70 pounds of additional weight (the Grand Voyager weighs in at 3,766 pounds) help give this minivan excellent road manners, including the ability to roll down the highway impervious to crosswinds.

Chrysler uses gas-charged shocks, struts, coil springs and stabilizer bars up front and leaf springs connected to a tube-type axle in the rear. There’s nothing new here, but structural improvements in the Voyager’s body have enabled the suspension system to provide a smoother, quieter ride.

The Grand Voyager is very maneuverable for a large van. It can turn a complete circle in just 39.5 feet – a circumference 3 1/2 feet smaller than last year’s vans.

Power-assisted front disc/rear drum anti-lock brakes are standard on all models. They provide ample stopping power. The ABS system is quiet and effective, and it stops the vehicle easily and in a straight line on slippery roads.

FIT AND FINISH

I’m convi ced the Grand Voyager is the most user-friendly minivan money can buy.

It seems as if Chrysler’s interior designers took a close look at their old minivan – as well as competitive vehicles – and then set out to make the new Voyager better in every way.

For now, the Voyager and its siblings – the Chrysler Town & Country and the Dodge caravan – are unique in that they offer sliding doors on both sides. Traditionally, the sliding door has been available only on the right.

The left-side sliding door is a $450 option, but it is well worth it – it basically doubles access to the interior.

And getting in and out of the Voyager is one of the vehicle’s best traits. The door sill is very low, so you step in, not up.

Everything about the Grand Voyager, from the minimal effort required to slide open both doors, to the versatility of the seats, to the size, shape and layout of the controls, has been designed to be easy to operate.

From the driver’s seat, all important controls are less than an arm’s length away, and they require only a slight amount of attention to operate.

To adjust the temperature or change the direction of the air flow, all you do is turn a knob in the center of the dash. With only a small movement of my thumb, I could activate the cruise control (the buttons are located in the center of the steering wheel). Large buttons on the radio made it a cinch to change the stations or the volume.

Just underneath the radio is the very latest in cupholder technology. A pop-out tray has two cupholders that have a built-in ratcheting mechanism that grips the bottom of cups and cans. Nice touch. And by the way, these cupholders can hold the biggest convenience store drink you are likely to find.

Switches for the windows are housed on the door panel. The electrically operated rear side vent windows open outward about 3 inches, an exclusive feature on Chrysler minivans.

Our test van featured two rows of removable rear bench seats. The middle row came with built-in child safety seats. These bench seats are latched to the floor but can be easily removed. And because they are on wheels, the seats can be rolled into the garage. On the down side, the removable seats weigh 90 pounds each, so taking them out is more than most people can handle on their own.

With the rear seats out, there is enough room in the back to haul such things as sheets of plywood.

There is also plenty of room between the seats when they are in, so passengers can move about the cabin easily.

The rear area also has its own air-conditioning system with vents neatly integrated into the roof.

After a week and nearly 400 miles, our van exhibited nearly flawless quality. Sometimes the engine was a bit cranky when hot, but I discovered that it restarted much easier when I didn’t touch the accelerator.

All in all, it’s the best minivan money can buy.

Truett’s tip: The 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyag er offers an exceptionally smooth luxury-car ride, takes user-friendliness to a new level and puts Plymouth at the head of the parade of minivans.

Grand Voyager Van is my pride and joy.

I bought a new 1996 Grand Voyager SE. I have lots of people sometimes, so the quad of captains chairs and the bench seat for three was exactly what I needed. I also have a ceramics business and periodically haul large loads of items. Since the captains chairs unhook and the bench seat can be released from its rail, I can take all seats out with the exception of the drivers seat. The car itself is so comfortable, I never have a back problem. It is a very smooth ride. When I pick up dry cleaning, I hang it on pull down hooks on either side. This car also has two ports (front and rear for laptops or other items)Cup holders throughout, as is press to turn on lights. With over 100,000 miles, I have had minimal repairs. I would be lost without my van.

1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager: Help Me :(

  • Add to quote

13 mpg - is that city mileage ? I guess it is as 13mpg (US) works out at around 15.5mpg (UK). Some things you can do are : increase tyre pressures a little, say 38 psi instead of 36 psi, and make sure they stay at that pressure. Carry as little weight as possible. If you don't need 7 seats, take some out - the rear bench or middle captains. Don't run around with a full tank unless going a long distance. Petrol weighs 1kg per litre. Don't use the air-con if possible, it really hits fuel economy. And the biggest saver of all - go easy on the gas pedal ! These engines have decent torque, so let it do all the work. Keep the RPM down when pulling away and the van will easily reach 60mph without going over 2000 rpm. Other than that, keep on top of the maintenance.

grand voyager 1996 fuel economy

Great advice. Just want to add: > Play the lights. Keep in mind you don't want to be a hazard but if you travel a regular daily route make a mental note of green red patterns. If you see a light has been green a while slow down a bit. If looking ahead you see a light turn red take your foot off the gas and coast. Headed downhill? Coast. > Momentum is your friend. Starting from a full stop uses much more gas than if you accelerate while rolling. This comes into play when "playing the lights" too. When a light turns green as you're coasting to the red, you're rolling momentum will save you gas as you accelerate through the light. Any momentum will help - even 2-3 mph will save you in the long run.

and replace the air filter

You might check to see if it could use a new set of oxygen sensors as they are used to set the fuel air mixture so if they are malfunctioning, they can lead to very poor mileage. However the most important piece of advice I can give to a high schooler with a van is to never, ever, ever....come anywhere near my house and my daughters. Your life depends upon it.

grand voyager 1996 fuel economy

Man...do you have a fuel leak somewhere? Check it over real good front to back.

It's 13 average, I live in a small town, so there's not much traffic. Thanks alot for the advice, i'll be sure to go easy on the gas. Also, how much would it cost to change the air filter or Oxygen sensors??

DIY - $75 to $150 depending on which brand sensors you buy. I would steer clear of the cheapos. Shop/dealer - $200 and up Gaining MPGs by throwing parts at it is a crap shoot at best without testing. Do the math and consider the potential savings vs the potential cost and how long it takes to get the pay back even if you get lucky. The air filter? No brainer - change it. O2 sensors? Not so much.

grand voyager 1996 fuel economy

Being a young person, this is an excellent opportunity to learn some Do it Yourself mechanics. There are tutorials and advice on how to do maintenance items. Before you change the O2 sensor(s) you might want to hook up an OBDII tool and see what the fuel trim levels are currently running. If too rich, then a sensor may be going bad. If not, you may be wasting time/money changing it out.

Are you using the EVIC to determine your gas mileage or are you actually using the trip mileage and doing the math at fillup.

If you take the old upstream sensor off, you can do a bench test on it with a propane torch and a voltmeter. The red lead on the voltmeter gets attached to the sensor wire (typically black) on the O2 sensor and the black lead should be grounded to the metal on the sensor casing. When you put the tip of the sensor into the flame of the torch, the voltage should climb to around 1.00 volts (or at least higher than 0.60V) within a minute (this simulates a rich condition because the lack of O2). When you remove the sensor from the flame, it should return to near zero within 3 seconds. A good scan tool can also report the voltages and some can graph the voltage fluctuation which should cycle but average around 0.45 V in a properly functioning sensor. I just replaced my upstream sensor with a new one not because it tested bad but just because it was the original sensor, my van is at 193K miles and it was super easy to get to with the manifold removed. I'm going to bench test the old one just for kicks soon. By the way, RockAuto has them for about $20 which is less than half what they were at AZ or AA and the local stores only seemed ot have the Bosh's on hand which nobody likes so I ordered from RockAuto and had it in a few days at a big savings.

The $20 one at RockAuto that I was talking about is a Standard Motor Products and it is currently on a wholesaler closeout, hence the bargain basement price. I've had good luck with SMP on other items so that's what I got. Many people on this board like the Densos and even those are only $27 on RockAuto. They list the Delphis as the actual OEM part and those are still under $40. No use in paying the dealer big bucks for the same thing.

Hey, Im gonna give you some advice that you can just do on your own and some advice thats gonna cost you some money.... First off, what kind of engine is in your caravan?.. do you have the 3.3 or the 3.8L or the 3.0 SMOKERR??..I once had a 2003 with a 3.8 and all that thing did was eat up fuel to no end.. Im not sure about the Caravans from the 90's with the 3.8s... But Im gonna assume you have a V6 Keep up On the tire pressure, the More drag you have the more fuel your gonna use, cause the engine has to work harder to keep you at a desired speed.. Fill your tires to the tire MFG rating.. which is usually 35 lbs..Dont over fill the tires.. even tho that will keep the tires stiffer and allow the tire to roll more than it would with less pressure, the money you save in gas will be used to buy new tires earlyer than expected...overfilling your tires will run the inner tred out faster... Check out your front end.. Does your wheel pull to the left or the right?.. is your steering wheel always in a crooked position when driving?... when your alighnment is off not only are you wearing your front tires out quicker, depending on how bad your alighnment is you also creating resistance, slowing you down making your engine work harder to keep you up to the desired speed.. Check your tie rods and baljoints for play, replace if needed... Im doing a video on checking up your car for fuel economy in the next few days...Check my youtube channel out its http://www.youtube.com/user/905speedgta ..remember, ANYTIME you replace ANYTHING on the front end you need to get it alighned..dont let anyone tell you you dont have to.. Use the air conditioner all you want when your on the highway..Its a proven fact that there is virtually no fuel loss by using the a/c at highway speeds...using the a/c around town costs you about 1 MPG, so Drive with the windows down, thats your call....By the way, speaking of highway, do the speed limit.. you live in NJ, I live In NY and out speed limits range from 55 to 65 mph.. do 55 and 60..studies show that anything more than 60 mph you notice a substantial decrease in fuel economy..so keep your speed down, and also dont hit the gas pedal too hard when taking off, in other words keep your rpm's dowm...the less your engine works the better your fuel efficiency will be speaking of engine, how does it run?.. whens the last time you got a tune up?. is your throttle body clean?..is your PCV system working properly?. Do you have any vacuum leaks are your oil pan and valve cover gaskets leaking?..hows your oil and oil level?... yould be surprised how much better a engine can run when everything is operating correctly..I had a terrible leak in my valve cover gaskets and intake manifold gasket I replaced every gasket from the lower intake manifold up and Noticed a big difference in fuel economy after....I drove 67 miles round trip on the highway and used only 1/8 tank of gas, opposed to 1/4 like it normally did on the same route.. so check your ignition, pcv, and oil systems and make sure they are working propery... Some cars lose fuel economy after getting older..usually people do the bare minimum to a engine and expect to get good fuel economy forever, take all of what I said into consideration and spend a while checking everything..Im willing to bet after all I said your gonna find atleast something that is causing your fuel loss...good luck man Oh and btw, check your wheel bearings too or maybe a sticking caliper or drum...those all create drag...goodluck

I'll put my pitch in for doing a Seafoam treatment here. I was getting poor fuel mileage in my 3.0L (<20mpg in mixed city/hiway and ~22mpg hiway). I switched to 0W30 Mobil 1 and did a seafoam treatment in the oil, gas, and intake. After that, my mileage stayed at >25mpg hiway and ~20mpg mixed. I was astounded. Best $10 I ever spent on that van. Oh, and it also cured the sticky lifters. And another +1 for the light foot action. If you have the trip computer, amaze yourself by watching the Avg and Inst ECO using different driving styles. We got 23mpg mixed with our 3.3L last tank. There should be no reason you can't get there as well! :thumb: Travis
