GERMANY Halal-friendly holidays

Germany halal-friendly holidays general information.

Halal-friendly holidays in Germany

With around 5 million Muslims, Germany is one of the most popular European destinations for halal-conscious travellers. During the economic boom, some Muslims came to Germany as guest workers. Many of them stayed and enriched the country with their culture. For the two generations after the guest workers, Germany is both home and abroad. For many it is the opportunity and happiness for a fulfilled and more successful life, but the longing for one's own homeland is always present. For many, economic stability is the reason for staying. This can still be seen today, especially in popular big cities.

The cityscape is characterised by many Muslim residents. From Turkish wedding shops to Arabic hookah bars, almost every culture has a unique selling point. Muslim women wearing headscarves now work in department stores or teach in schools. There are several mosques and a wide range of halal restaurants in all cities.

The colourful mix of many different cultures and countries makes Germany so unique. In some parts of the city you can even get by with your own native language without any problems. Germany is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Around 40 million tourists come every year to explore the multicultural country. The most popular cities include Frankfurt , Hamburg and Munich . The most popular travel destination is and remains the capital Berlin .

Mosques and prayer facilities in Germany

There are many magnificent mosques with minarets and domes in Germany, but most are smaller prayer rooms that can usually only be recognised with a signboard.

Cologne Central Mosque - Probably the most famous and magnificent among them. It is enchanting with its timeless architecture and is one of the most modern mosques in the world.

Sehitlik Mosque - The second largest mosque with over 1500 seats is located in Berlin. It is similar to the Hagia Sophia Mosque and reflects the beauty of the Ottoman Empire.

In Germany, you can almost always find a mosque in the immediate vicinity with just a few clicks on Google Maps. Therefore, you can shop carefree in the city without having to miss the prayer times. The mosques are usually very small, but always well maintained and clean. You always feel welcome.

The Islamic cultural heritage of Germany

After Christianity, Islam is the religion with the second most believers in Germany. This became established primarily through immigration from the Balkans and the Middle East. The majority is the Sunni branch. Almost 60% of Muslims living in Germany have a Turkish migration background, which is due to the recruitment of guest workers.

The remaining 40% consist of immigrants from Iraq, Iran, Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Morocco, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tunisia, Syria, Lebanon or German converts. Thanks to the large selection of German-speaking mosques, many German Muslims have the opportunity to live out their faith freely. In addition, many German schools offer Islamic lessons as an alternative to religious education.

Germany's most popular sights and activities for Muslims

Germany offers a huge selection of large shopping centres with renowned brands. Discount stores like Primark and H&M also attract customers with their low prices. So there is something for every budget. Europe's largest shopping centre with over 250 shops is located in Oberhausen . The Made In Germany seal stands for high quality and reliability worldwide.

One of the most popular activities in Germany are the numerous amusement parks . The most popular and largest among them is the Europa Park in Rust , with three million visitors every year. With thirteen roller coasters and over 100 attractions, Europa Park offers a lot of fun for young and old. However, due to the long queues, you have to plan for long waiting times. The smaller and quieter alternative would be the Skyline Park in Bad Wörishofen.

E-biking with a view like Canada? In Chiemgau you have the opportunity to experience the beautiful landscape of three lakes. It is the best option for nature lovers who want to relax in the fresh air. E-bikes can be rented inexpensively on site and even a boat tour over the lake is possible. The untouched nature and the beautiful hiking trails are an insider tip for hikers.

The Leipzig Zoo in Leipzig has been ranked number one among the best zoos in Germany for several years. It is characterised by its diversity of species and offers a huge tropical hall with 2,011 plants and animals from South America, Asia and Africa. A total of around 9,400 animals live in the popular zoo.

For travellers between October and January, Germany is an excellent destination for halal-friendly ski holidays . Numerous hotels in and around the popular ski areas attract visitors with their charming ambience and low prices. Even for beginners there are special slopes and instructors who will teach you everything.

Halal food and restaurants in Germany

Thanks to the high number of Muslim residents, Germany offers the perfect variety when it comes to food.

So it's not uncommon to see a street lined up with restaurants serving Turkish, Arabic, Egyptian and Indian cuisine. The largest selection is undoubtedly in Berlin. The capital is known for its colourful diversity and attracts several million tourists every year. It is the hotspot for many food trucks and food festivals with vegetarian dishes.

Since many German dishes consist primarily of pork, Muslims only have vegetarian alternatives, such as cheese spaetzle or potato dumplings. For meat lovers, world cuisine is a better alternative. The Halal certificate is subject to many requirements in Germany, so it gives the consumer a certain level of security when consuming food with the Halal certificate.

In addition to the numerous restaurants, there are many Turkish, Arabic and Indian supermarkets in Germany. This initially came about through requests from foreign residents. However, more and more Germans are enjoying such markets and are experimenting with foreign ingredients. It is no longer uncommon to find Turkish products in German discounters. The German market has adapted to the high demand.

A halal trip guide to berlin: food & attractions.

“Berlin is more a part of the world than a city. ” —Jean Paul, Writer, 1800

Arriving in Berlin in the midst of the winter solstice I shouldn’t have been taken aback by the chill in the air, the whiteness of the sky, snow falling on my face – but it was claustrophobic, looming above my head, closing in on me. The whole week I was there, I never saw the sun. Thankfully, the magic of the Christmas Market lights meant that even in its gloomy winter state, the city sparkled.

market 2

Berlin is littered with graffiti, trains juddering as they fail to sneak past the overlapping buildings standing low and high, never-ending. A place sprinkled with art and people from cultures worldwide, it reminded me of home in the best way. It’s cold, busy, alive, never sleeping. Similarly to London, the diversity of Berlin’s make-up means a halal experience isn’t hard to find – here is the best of what I tried.

Yarok – Fine Syrian Food from Damascus

kanafe

Oh boy, this place was so good we didn’t even stop to take a picture of our main meals! Here we tried Bamyeh – a lamb dish with okra, tomatoes, and spices served with rice, salad, hummus and customary flatbread for a happy price of around 7 euros. We also tried their mixed lamb and beef shawarma, which was exceptionally tender and tasty. I have never tried anything like that in London – it reigned supreme in the shawarma stakes. We topped off our homely meal with kanafeh, a middle eastern dessert to die for.

La Femme – a Turkish diner serving breakfast and more

breakfast femme

Want a meaty breakfast? I got you. La Femme is a Turkish establishment with three different branches across the city serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I went for breakfast there twice, devouring scrumptious plates of eggs, various halal meats, and potatoes cooked in spices accompanied by fresh salad, olives, and their famous Turkish bread. PS. their vanilla macchiato lattes are dangerously sweet but delectable.

SUPER Concept Space, Bikini Berlin

breakfast

Sure, lots of trendy brunch places can be found across Berlin, but I happened to stumble across this one first and was captured by the decor. Located in the shopping center Bikini Berlin , the space has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the city zoo. We watched the meerkats frolic below us as we enjoyed fresh juice and cress garnished eggs and spinach on muffins, surrounded by plants and Insta-worthy neon signs. They have other vegetarian breakfast options too, like veg omelets.

Tiergarten Quelle – traditional German food

cheese pasta

I wanted to try something authentically German, which was hard when most of those things seem to include some form of meat. Tiergarten Quelle has a pub atmosphere, but I loved it – dimly lit with candles and adorned with vintage signage, it is cosy and relaxed. We started off with a huge plate of Camembert served with whipped cream and cranberry dip, salad and bread. For the main meal, I chose the Cheese Spaetzle – fresh egg noodle dumplings coated in onions, red peppers, cream, herbs and hella cheese, served on a hot pan. We also tried their spinach and cheese pasta parcels, both of which were satisfyingly warming on a chilly day.

Seaside Restaurant – Fish & Seafood Bar

fish

This was a pricey one, with some more-than-worthy items. I started off with some scallops and the best lobster soup I will probably ever have in my life; every mouthful was a revelation. For mains, you choose the fish you’d like, which is laid in front of you on a bed of ice. We chose fillets of halibut and Norwegian fjord trout, one large octopus tentacle and two king prawns, which gave me a heart attack of a total of 121 euros. We ordered a side of crunchy vegetables and triple cooked chips and enjoyed our meal despite the bill because it was worth the price – it just depends on your budget.

Sidenote on being on a budget When we first arrived we popped to our local Lidl and did a big shop of water, fruit, and snacks to take with us on our days out which I’d recommend doing if you’re also on a budget – it was cheap and more convenient.

The city is filled with more halal options than I had time to try – so here are some other options for you to sink your teeth into:

Mustafa Gemuse Kebab Tuk Tuk (Indonesian restaurant) Huhnerhaus 36 (Nandos style diner) Sahar Imbiss (Sudanese restaurant) Vapianos (it isn’t Halal and there is one in London, but honestly, I’d have their Gamberetti e Spinaci – basically prawns in creamy pasta – anywhere in the world.)

Things To Do

There are loads of family friendly/halal activities you can enjoy in Berlin – here’s what I enjoyed the most…

1. Museum Island

20181225_152627

The island consists of five museums – one of which possesses the original bust of Nefertiti, which was incredible to see. The family of museums hold a plethora of Islamic art, as well as treasures from India, Syria, Egypt, and Africa to name a few.

2. Berlin Wall memorial

20181226_153701.jpg

An educational, tangible insight into what life was like when the wall was up.

3. Jewish Museum Consisting of two exhibitions, their permanent one on Judaism and a temporary one about Jerusalem, which gave a fascinating insight into the history of Palestine and tales of co-existence between the Abrahamic religions in the holy city.

4. Holocaust Memorial

memorial

5. Brandenburg Gate

20181227_165319.jpg

6. Computer Spiele Museum Kids and adult gamers alike will love this! Explore the world of gaming from its conception to the present day, and have a go playing some of the best.

Berlin has so many treasures to explore, I’m sure I missed a few – but I’m sure I’ll be back.

Halal hotels germany.

Like other tourists, Muslim travelers coming from Islamic countries have particular requirements when they choose the destination for their vacation. Among these requirements, Muslims are concerned about the availability of halal compliant foods (no pork or alcohol in food) and a clean place to pray.

Many international hotels in Germany  do serve halal  food that is slaughtered in accordance with the teachings of Islamic Sharia and is free of any substances forbidden by Islam such as pork and alcohol.

Other  Islamic countries  such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Oman and Brunei continue to be popular with  Muslim  tourists. Among non-OIC  countries , Singapore, Thailand , the UK, Japan and Taiwan remain the top five respectively, but show improved scores on the index.

The hotel itself was immaculate and had a very nice great room with  complimentary   coffee , juice and soda privately off the lobby Several newspapers and an on site concierge.

The on site restaurant was good for dinner but breakfast was a bit skimpy I think for the price. It included Champagne but not something I want everyday for breakfast. The staff are 6 Stars. Couldn’t do enough to make us comfortable.

The hotel is perfectly located for your stay in Düsseldorf whether it is for business or leisure. (And shopping, just across the Galeria Kaufhof ) I loved the private living room concept with  complimentary drinks and coffee  and just off the reception.
