Emmerdale Village Tour

Read reviews

The live, working TV set located within the Harewood Estate in Leeds has played witness to many a spectacle and has opened its gates on a select few weekend dates, as cast and crew down scripts, allowing guests to tread the tarmac and indulge in a fully guided Emmerdale  set tour of the popular, fictional village.

Visitors will be able to marvel at the beauty the picturesque farming village boasts, as they meander down the lane to the surreal sight of stone-clad shops and homes nestled amongst the rolling hills.

Sauntering past the familiar haunts of Bob’s Café, The Woolpack, the village Church and rows of stone cottages known as home for over 43 years to your favourite  Emmerdale  characters, guides will share secrets, stories and reveal fascinating facts behind the making of the multi-award-winning ITV soap.

Emmerdale village, as it is today, was purpose-built in the grounds of Harewood House in 1997 after the programme’s former location of Esholt became so popular with visitors that filming scenes became impossible.  Its secluded and somewhat secret home at Harewood has been steeped in security to stop general public access.

Immerse yourself in the poignant world of the small, extraordinary rural village of Emmerdale, where the only real drama will be if you miss out…

NOTE:  This Emmerdale Village tour is purely a walking tour of the outdoor filming set of ITV’s hugely popular ‘Emmerdale’. Interior scenes are filmed elsewhere and not available on this tour. This tour is NOT suitable for those requiring a wheelchair as there are cobbles, grass and steps.

BOOKINGS FOR THIS TOUR ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR CANCELLATION OR REFUND AND RESCHEDULING IS ONLY PERMITTED PRIOR TO THE 4 WEEK PERIOD BEFORE A BOOKED TOUR DATE – ANY RESCHEDULE REQUESTS RECEIVED WITHIN THE 4 WEEKS PERIOD LEADING UP TO A BOOKED TOUR DATE WILL BE DECLINED.

A loverly little ad break! Continue reading below.

For over 50 years, Emmerdale has been captivating audiences with its gripping storylines and unforgettable characters.

Now, fans have the extraordinary opportunity to step behind the scenes and immerse themselves in the world of their favourite soap opera.

The Emmerdale Village Tour offers a unique glimpse into the heart of Yorkshire and the magic of television production.

The Emmerdale Village Tour: A Yorkshire Hidden Gem

Behind the scenes: secrets of soap opera magic, walking in the footsteps of favourite characters, the yorkshire experience: more than just a tv show, a slice of history, practical information, a must-do for emmerdale fans.

Nestled within the picturesque Harewood Estate in Leeds, the Emmerdale set is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. This purpose-built village, constructed in 1997, has been the backdrop for countless dramatic moments and heart-warming scenes.

As you approach the village, you’ll be struck by the surreal sight of stone-clad shops and homes nestled among the rolling Yorkshire hills.

Exploring Emmerdale Village

The tour offers exclusive weekend access to this normally closed set. When the cast and crew wrap up filming on Friday, the village transforms into a visitor attraction, allowing fans to tread the same paths as their beloved characters.

Your 90-minute guided tour will unveil the secrets behind the making of this award-winning ITV soap. Expert guides, brimming with knowledge and anecdotes, will lead you through the village, sharing fascinating facts and behind-the-scenes stories that bring a whole new dimension to village life.

Behind the scenes at Emmerdale Village

You’ll have the chance to visit iconic locations such as:

  • The Woolpack : Stand outside the famous pub where countless dramatic scenes have unfolded.
  • Café Main Street : Peek into the window where village gossip is exchanged over cups of tea.
  • The Village Church : Explore the exterior of this picturesque location, site of many Emmerdale weddings and funerals.
  • David’s Shop : Strike a pose for a photo opportunity outside this colourful village staple.

As you wander through the village, you’ll gain insights into the production process, from set design to special effects. You might even discover how the team manages to create those explosive storylines in such a quaint setting!

For die-hard fans, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of standing in the same spots where iconic scenes have been filmed. Imagine yourself in the shoes of Cain Dingle as you lurk outside The Woolpack, or channel your inner Charity Dingle on the streets of the village.

Your guide will point out locations where some of the most memorable moments in Emmerdale history have taken place. You might find yourself on the very spot where a helicopter crashed into the village hall, or where a dramatic confrontation unfolded on a stormy night.

For an extra special experience, consider booking a Star Tour. These exclusive events offer the chance to meet a surprise member of the Emmerdale cast, adding an unforgettable touch of star power to your visit.

Harewood Estate

While Emmerdale may be fiction, the tour offers a genuine taste of Yorkshire life. The village’s stunning location showcases the natural beauty of the region, with its rolling hills and picturesque countryside. It’s easy to see why this landscape has inspired not just television producers, but generations of artists and writers.

After your tour, why not explore more of what Yorkshire has to offer? The Harewood Estate itself is home to a magnificent 18th-century house and gardens, providing a perfect complement to your Emmerdale experience. Leeds, with its rich industrial heritage and vibrant cultural scene, is just a stone’s throw away.

Where to Stay: Harewood Holidays

Extend your Yorkshire experience by staying in one of Harewood’s historic cottages. Harewood Holidays offers a range of unique accommodations that perfectly complement your Emmerdale Village Tour adventure.

Harewood Holidays

Each cottage in the Harewood Estate has its own fascinating story to tell. From former worker cottages to ancient hunting lodges, these Grade II Listed buildings are steeped in character and charm. As you relax in your temporary home, you’ll be surrounded by the same breath-taking landscapes that have inspired Emmerdale’s creators for decades.

The Emmerdale Village Tour runs on selected weekends from March to October. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Duration : The guided tour lasts approximately 90 minutes.
  • Meeting Point : All tours start from Weetwood Hall Hotel car park, where you’ll board a coach to the secret village location.
  • Accessibility : While efforts have been made to accommodate all visitors, please note that the tour involves walking on uneven surfaces and some areas may be challenging for wheelchair users. A printed script is available for hearing-impaired guests.
  • What to Bring : Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather. Don’t forget your camera!
  • Booking : Pre-booking is essential as tickets are limited.

The Emmerdale Village Tour offers a rare opportunity to peek behind the curtain of one of Britain’s best-loved television shows. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to the world of Emmerdale, this tour promises an unforgettable experience that brings the drama and charm of the Yorkshire Dales to life.

As one satisfied visitor put it: “From start to finish it was amazing. The walk itself was at a lovely pace. To see the set in all its glory on such a lovely sunny day was perfect.”

Emmerdale Village Tour

Ever fancied taking a tour around the iconic Emmerdale village , retracing the footsteps of characters past and present, and having your picture taken outside The Woolpack pub?

Well, you can!

Yes, that’s right – the Emmerdale Village Tours gives lucky fans the opportunity to visit the show’s outside set which is featured in nearly every episode of the ITV soap.

The famous village is home to its cast and crew during the week. But when the cameras stop rolling it’s open to visitors who’d like a sneak peek behind the scenes.

This popular experience has been running for a number of years and makes the perfect gift for any soap lover.

But where are the tours held? How often do they run? And how can you get your hands on a ticket to join in the fun?

Here’s all you need to know about the Emmerdale Tour…

Harewood House front view with statue in the middle

Where is Emmerdale filmed?

The recognisable village of Emmerdale is actually a purpose-built set, located on the Harewood House Estate in West Yorkshire. It’s situated a short drive away from the centre of Leeds and Harrogate.

When Emmerdale debuted in 1972 , filming took place in the village of Arncliffe. It then relocated to Esholt in West Yorkshire.

By 1998 the residents of Esholt decided they wanted the cameras out and their village back. So a replica set was built deep in the grounds of Harewood House.

The majority of the interior filming – character’s homes, businesses, and of course, The Woolpack is all done at the ITV studios in Leeds.

Occasionally the villagers will venture out into the fictional town of Hotten. This is actually the real-life town of nearby Otley.

How to visit the Emmerdale set

On select weekends and bank holidays, Emmerdale’s exterior set turns into a tourist attraction, giving visitors exclusive access.

Your ticket on The Emmerdale Village Tour enables fans to see the exterior locations of landmarks such as The Woolpack, the café, the local shop and many more.

The Emmerdale Village Tour has two different experiences on offer – The Standard and Tour and The Star Tour.

But what do each of these entail?

The Emmerdale sign on the outskirts of the village

The Standard Emmerdale Tour

On selected weekends, Emmerdale welcomes visitors for an unmissable guided tour of Yorkshire’s most famous village.

You will be collected from a designated meeting point (either Harewood House or Weetwood Hall Hotel depending on the day) and taken via a coach transfer to the village film set.

Over 90 minutes, an expert guide will take you on a full tour of the exterior set. This will allow a sneak peek behind-the-scenes and share tales and soap trivia along the way.

There’s plenty of opportunity to take snaps of landmarks from David’s Shop to the Grange B&B – and posing next to the Emmerdale sign is an absolute must.

There is also a small unit on site, which serves hot and cold drinks as well as snacks and light bites.

And you can round things off by purchasing a piece of Emmerdale merchandise from the gift shop as a keepsake of your day out.

Moira Dingle aka Natalie J Robb in Emmerdale

The Emmerdale Star Tours

Expect the same wonderful experience as you get on the Standard Tour. However, this one has the added bonus of being able to meet one of Emmerdale’s cast members.

The actor will greet you on the set, and the cast line-up for The Star Tour is kept strictly under wraps so you get the surprise of who it is on the day.

Since the launch of these exclusive events, fans have enjoyed appearances from fan favourites. These have included  Danny Miller (Aaron Dingle), Roxy Shahidi (Leyla Harding), Lisa Riley (Mandy Dingle) James Hooton (Sam Dingle) and Natalie J Robb (Moira Dingle).

So if you fancy getting a selfie with one of Emmerdale’s stars make sure to nab yourself a ticket because they go fast!

How can I book an Emmerdale Tour?

Popular dates do sell fast so book early to avoid disappointment.

Tickets for both the Standard Tour and 2024 Summer Star Tour are currently on sale and will be until 1st September.

Unfortunately walk up bookings are not accepted.

How much are the Tours?

Prices do vary depending on the tour. The Standard Emmerdale Tour is from £35 per person. Meanwhile the Emmerdale Village Star Tours start at £55 per person.

This flexible gift option means the vouchers can be redeemed within 12 months of purchase and used to make a booking during on or off-peak times.

Booking can be easily made online via the website.

Emmerdale star Claire King smiles and waves her hands in the air in front of the audience at An Audience With Claire King

What other experiences are available?

Recently Emmerdale branched out and held their first An Audience With… Lucky fans were treated to a Q&A with Claire King, hosted by This Morning soap queen Sharon Marshall.

The event was held at Weetwood Hall Hotel. Claire talked about her lifetime of Emmerdale memories with excited fans. As well as Sharon asking the questions, there was also an audience Q&A.

After the evening Claire spoke about how much she had enjoyed the experience. She revealed: “It has been an extraordinary evening looking back over all these years and watching all those scenes whilst sitting with such a huge group of people who probably know more about Kim Tate than I do!

“Evenings like this are rare and it was an absolute joy to step away from the studios and spend this time with the show’s fans. Let’s face it, without them none of us would be able to do what we love, bringing our characters into their living rooms every single week. It was a night to remember for a very long time. ”

Emmerdale is planning to do more of these events in the future, with details set to be released on their socials.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Where is Emmerdale filmed and can you visit the famous village?

Emmerdale village sign

Emmerdale has been on our screens for over 50 years, and during that time we’ve seen plenty of drama grace the famous village!

The iconic ITV soap, set in the Yorkshire dales, first aired in October 1972. However, for the first seventeen years, it was known as Emmerdale Farm.

The quaint daytime serial followed the everyday life of the Sugden family in their farmhouse, and occasionally ventured down to the village, then known as Beckindale, to explore the lives of their neighbours.

With flagging viewing figures and an audience more accustomed to the high drama of rival soaps Coronation Street and EastEnders, the show was moved to primetime, sexed up with the arrival of the Tate family and its name was shortened.

As a result of these changes, it became the roaring success that it is today.

Emmerdale celebrates 10,000th episode in May 2024

After half a century on British TV, you might be wondering where the show, with its many streets, houses, shop buildings and external locations, has been filming for so long.

And if you’re a long-term fan, you’ll probably be keen to see the real Emmerdale for yourself.

So, where is Emmerdale filmed – and can you visit the set? Here’s Metro.co.uk’s guide to what you need to know.

Where is Emmerdale filmed?

Emmerdale’s exterior scenes are primarily shot on a purpose-built set located on Harewood House Estate in West Yorkshire .

The estate, owned by The Earl and Countess of Harewood, is near Leeds and Harrogate, and has also been used for filming shows such as Downton Abbey.

The show had been using a number of nearby buildings, including those currently occupied by the Dingle and Sharma families, throughout the 90s – but it wasn’t until 1998 that a replica (with some creative license) of the village was constructed on the estate.

Prior to this, the West Yorkshire village of Esholt was used, but as you can imagine, filming in a real life location caused a number of issues for production staff who had to impose on the residents each week and avoid fans seeing spoilers!

The landlords of Esholt’s Commercial Inn even changed the name of their pub to The Woolpack in response to the tourist trade.

Originally, between 1972 and 1976, Arncliffe was used for filming Beckindale life, whilst Lindley Farm in Leathley doubled as the Sugden’s homestead.

With the houses and businesses constructed of timber, interior scenes are mostly filmed at The Leeds Studios, on Kirkstall Road in the city centre.

However, whenever you see characters inside of the church, veterinary practice or the B&B, they are actually inside of their respective external counterparts.

Scenes set in the fictional nearby market town of Hotten are shot in Otley.

During 2021’s Survival Week episodes, the Emmerdale cast and crew headed beyond Yorkshire to nearby County Durham for filming at High Force Waterfall – as well as the Tees Barrage International White Water Centre, which is located in Stockton-on-Tees.

Can you visit Emmerdale’s set?

The Woolpack in Emmerdale village

Luckily, yes – you can! Since 2015, tours have operated of the private village set in Harewood.

Fans can expect to see the main village and cemetery whilst walking in the footsteps of their faves, plus can buy special souvenirs in the show’s production hub.

With this being an external walking tour over rough terrain, you should definitely pack your wellies if you’re planning to book tickets.

It should also be noted that a few areas are off limits – including Pollard’s Barn, Wishing Well Cottage and Holdgate Farm – as these belong to the estate, not ITV.

Emmerdale: The Village Tour ticket prices

  • £35 to £38 weekend tour:  A guided tour of the show’s exterior backlot set on the Harewood estate, taking in sights such as David’s Shop and The Woolpack.
  • £55 weekend star tour and experience:  If you fancy splashing the cash, you can do all of the above, plus meet a member of cast at the end of your tour for a selfie and an autograph.

The Mill in Emmerdale village

You’ll also not get to walk into any of the interior sets, which means pulling a pint in The Woolpack is off limits. Prior to the pandemic, tour managers Continuum Attractions operated a separate site known as The Emmerdale Studio Experience, though this has not reopened.

Kim Tate’s house, Home Farm, is private residence Creskeld Hall in Bramhope so therefore access is off limits. As is Butler’s Farm, owned by Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) in the programme. Brooklands Farm across the road from the village set doubles for this property and they provide the animals used in scenes.

Can you visit the former filming locations?

Malandra Burrows, Leah Bracknell and Clive Hornby on set during filming of Emmerdale Farm in 1989.

Die-hard fans may also want to pay a visit to the real villages of Arncliffe and Esholt.

Esholt isn’t too far away from Bradford, and could be considered a step back in time given its representative of how Emmerdale looked for two decades before their big move.

Just don’t do what one couple who paid Esholt a visit in March 2022 did, and complain when they found out that the village doesn’t look exactly the same as the modern-day set!

Arncliffe, meanwhile, is about one hour, 10 minutes away from Esholt by car, and is located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
