Image Tours Heart of Europe Tour is a Bucket List Topper!

My parents took me on the Heart of Europe tour for my 50th birthday gift! What an experience! Everything was organized and easy to navigate from the time we left the airport until we returned. Our guide, Cynthia, was knowledgeable, friendly, and fun! She made this once in a lifetime trip even better with her historical accounts and personal anecdotes. If you’re questioning whether this is the right trip for you, the answer is YES!!!

It was a great trip

Everything was well organized, hotels were good, and meals were good. Tour guide and bus driver were wonderful.

Wonderful time on tour in Great Britain and Ireland

Wonderful time, very happy with tour guide, great places to see! Would do it again!

Date of experience : July 02, 2024

Would definitely book with Image Tours again!!

Our guide was very knowledgeable and made the information fun and interesting. There were a variety of hotels from family owned to national chains. We like the differences between them. The food that was included was great. Even though they needed to feed a large group, the food was fresh and at the correct temperature. The optional tours were fantastic!

The experience was made great because…I enjoyed every minute.

The experience was made great because our guide led our instruction, was clear, was precise, and had a sense of humor. We had no boring days. We trusted her. Our various stops were well planned and helpful to our learning. I think the places we visited, time spent at various locations while there, and the routes we traveled were very well thought out. I would only ask Image to get maps and information about towns, monuments, museums, and hotels to us sooner.

The Heart of Europe Circle Tour

The Heart of Europe Circle Tour was an excellent way to experience highlights of seven countries over a two week period. The tour director and all details (transportation, meals, lodging and optional excursions) were superb. The tour was a great value for the price.

The Capitals of Central Europe tour was…

The Capitals of Central Europe tour was well planned and conducted. Ger was the perfect tour guide - probably the best I have ever had. He was knowledgeable about every site and gave loads of information all along the trip. I was on mental overload the entire time, but everything he shared was so pertinent to the tour, I enjoyed every minute.

Fantastic experience with Image Tours

Let me start by saying this was my second trip with Image Tours. Both of my trips, the WW2 Memorial Tour and the Heart of the British Isles Tour, were not just interesting and enjoyable, but so well organized and coordinated that we never had a single concern, other than deciding what to do in our free time. The Tour Mangers Paola, and Rene, were extremely well versed on the current days activities and sights. They had the schedules down to the minute, so we had very little down time. Our comfort and needs were alway a priority. It was obvious to us that Image Tours obviously does exceptional preparation before their tours. In my humble opinion you will get what you are promised through Image tours. I highly recommend Image Tours.

Circle Tour of Europe

We were very impressed with our May 2024 Circle Tour of Europe. The group we were with, our amazing tour guide, Petra Wentzel, and our bus driver, Leike, all the places we visited—I can’t say enough positives about our experience. Image Tours does it right.

Our director and bus driver were superb. they went the extra mile to accommodate people on the tour and were extremely helpful. They were also great to get along with.

This was our second trip with Image Tours. Like before, the tour guide was outstanding. He always went above and beyond to make sure everyone's needs were met. The Italy tour pace was brisk but we saw and experienced so much. The food and hotels were fantastic. Take advantage of the optional excursions and you will realize an even greater value.

First trip to Europe and London

I would have to say that everything we experienced on our Heart of Europe Grand to include London tour was wonderful. We were always looking forward to the next country visited and enjoyed every minute of our trip. Our tour guide, Minni Hoeve, communicated with us throughout our trip. He is wonderful, kind and knowledgeable tour guide.

Terrific European trip

Our tour guide, Ron was awesome! Everything, including transportation, hotel stays, and most meals, and excursions were ALL taken care of! Even transfers to and from the airport. We’ve never been to Europe before, and the immersive type of the tour was very impressive. We didn’t stay @ chain hotels, but boutique and family owned properties. We were able to experience the true culture and people of the various countries we traveled.

The tour was wonderful

The tour was wonderful. The tour guide, Ger and bus driver, Ed were exceptional. Sitting in the back of the bus was not comfortable as the air conditioning was not distributed equally and it was very hot. The hotels that were not air conditioned were hot and uncomfortable as welI. We feel the tour company needs to book more updated lodging with the travelers comfort in mind mainly in the summer months. The rest of the year is not an issue as it is cooler then in Europe.

The image tours 15 day Heart of Europe…

The Image Tours 15 day Heart of Europe was the best trip I have ever taken. Our tour manager Richard Munning has so much knowledge and he talked about a lot of history of each country and area we were about to see. He is such a a caring man. He gave us a lot of tips to watch out for. I love that he walked slow so we can take pictures and love the whispers that we could hear Richard's talk about whatever he is showing us when we were a ways away. Hans our bus driver was really a gentleman and he help you coming down the stairs in the bus. I give this trip a 10+. Thank you Image Tours, Richard and Hans to make a memorable trip I will never forget.

Loved the tours and the tour guides but flight booking is poor

Loved the tours and the tour guides. This would have been 5 stars, but Image Tours has pretty lousy air booking arrangements. They keep air routes a mystery until the tour has been completely paid and then they treat those that prefer to book their own routes (because they don't provide the planned routes) as 2nd class travelers in regards to providing airport transfer times and insured flight coverage. Their flight prices tend to be more expensive than booking our own flights. Once the flights are purchased through Image Tour, you are at the mercy of whatever mystery route they have selected. Many others that used their flights regretted the poor flight itineraries they got. They are behind the times as other tour companies allow flight itinerary selection at the time of booking the tour. Room for improvement.

Reply from Image Tours

Thank you for your feedback and we are glad to hear that you loved the tours and the tour guides. When you book our Special/Discounted Tour & Air Inclusive option, Image Tours takes care of finding the best air schedules to connect with the tour and meet that pricing. Although more than 80% of our travelers booking Image Tours prefer this up-front pricing and full-service approach, Image Tours also offers the flexibility to book your air separately or to request a specific schedule and pay the price difference.

Barbara Kleinbussink-Heart of Europe Tour

Tour guide/Manager, Barbara Kleinbussink; was very professional, informative & knowledgeable about history of countries visited. Also, very witty. Motor coach Commanders Lieke and William are extremely skillful drivers. Tour cost worthy of number of days and countries visited. Amazing experience for someone visiting Europe for the first time.

The timing of the tour was very well-paced. The local guides were very informative and interesting. Overall, we were vey pleased with our tour and have recommended it to others.

Image Tours provided an outstanding tour experience

Image Tours provided an outstanding tour of Scandinavia and the Baltics. Our tour guide, Richard Munning, was terrific. Richard is very knowledgeable of each country visited, and he provided us with excellent suggestions on how to spend our free time. The travel by bus, the various hotel accommodations, the local tour guides, the optional excursions were great. Richard's caring and thoughtful leadership made this trip an exceptional travel experience.

United kingdom.

Regal. Charming. Scenic.

Comprised of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the United Kingdom definitely has dozens of reasons worth leaving home for. Mountains, valleys, hills and dales, forests and gardens, oh and no less than 25 UNESCO World Heritage sites scattered throughout, are but a few. You will find a slew of cathedrals, castles, palaces and country houses spanning history. Centuries of inspiring the world, influencing the arts, and forming natural beauty have developed this land into one great nation.

Destination Must-See's

UK ms1

A world in a city is a common way to describe the metropolis of London, the capital of England. A cultural melting pot of over 230 nationalities, London is the financial, political and cultural capital of the UK. It is booming with activity and bursting with sightseeing treasures. You’ll find historic highlights from the haunting Tower of London to the ornate Buckingham Palace and more modern attractions such as the world-famous Harrods department store and the towering London Eye.

UK ms2

The capital city and second most populous in Scotland, Edinburgh has been recognized for its historic and cultural attractions. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK after London. Great shopping, historic architecture and great Scottish whisky are just part of its allure. Its greatest draw is Edinburgh Castle. This sprawling medieval castle and fortress sits atop Castle Rock in the city center, dominating Edinburgh’s skyline.

UK ms3

Giant’s Causeway:

At the foot of the basalt cliffs on the coast of Northern Ireland’s County of Antrim lies the stunning Giant’s Causeway. Travelers flock to this UNESCO World Heritage site to experience the 40,000 massive dark columns rising from the sea. The natural phenomena has sparked legends of giants and magic, but its unique geology points to volcanic activity from over 50 million years ago. The Giant’s Causeway is a beautiful sight and the experience of a lifetime.

UK ms4

Cornwall, a region located on a peninsula in southwest England, is comprised of many different towns and villages that feature beautiful beaches and picturesque coastlines. Bordered by the Celtic Sea and the English Channel, one of its most popular towns is St. Ives. This seaside port town just north of Penzance on the coast of the Celtic Sea is known as the art center of West Cornwall and has a sub-tropical feel and beautiful beaches.

Destination Must-Do's

UK md3

England’s Lake District:

Lose yourself in the natural beauty of this mountainous region in northwest England dotted with tranquil lakes. One of the picturesque villages in the region is Grasmere, once home of and inspiration to the romantic poet William Wordsworth. Perhaps you will take a sail on one of the lakes and take in the peaceful backdrop of lush green mountains, serene shorelines and pristine calm waters dotted with tiny islands.

UK md2

Stonehenge:

Walk in the footsteps of so many before you when visiting prehistoric Stonehenge. This mysterious rock formation dates back to the Stone Age and remains one of the world’s most famous sites. Standing in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, Stonehenge is perhaps the most important prehistoric monument in England. The experience of seeing this timeless monument is not to be missed – it will surely be a highlight of your visit.

This large, deep freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extends approximately 23 miles southwest of the city of Inverness. Loch Ness is best known for the alleged sightings of the Loch Ness monster. While Loch Ness is not the largest Scottish loch by surface area, it is the largest by volume, with its deepest point at 755 feet. Along the shore, you will find the ruins of Urquhart Castle. This once mighty site rests on the headwaters of Loch Ness and dates back as far as the 13th century.

UK md4

Prepare to step back in time in the English countryside. The Cotswolds are roughly 25 miles across and 90 miles long, stretching from Stratford-upon-Avon to Bath. The region is known for its small towns and villages with homes made from golden colored Cotswold stone and grass roofs that sit among lush greenery and rolling hills. Stratford-upon-Avon is perhaps its most famous town. Lying along the River Avon, it’s famed for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare, one of the world’s great playwrights. Be sure to make a trip to see the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Expert Advice

diana

Think “go to the right.” It is their natural flow of traffic even when it comes to walking. It is important to not only look both ways when crossing the street, but also when on an escalator, stand to the right. When walking down the street, stay alert and follow the flow – to the right.

UK e2

Expect to be offered tea, a lot. The British love their tea and not only during afternoon tea, any time for any reason. But you should know there is a “proper” way to drink it. The rules are – sit up straight, do not blow on it, take small sips with your pinky down, and put the cup on the saucer between sips. Now you are prepared to sip away.

UK e3

Bring a raincoat and umbrella, as it rains one out of three days in the UK. It does vary from region to region, but generally speaking, they are important items to have on hand at all times.

We visit early Celtic Christian and pagan sites such as holy wells, enchanted forests, stone circles, dolmens of the dead and fairy mounds  – all with a story to tell. In these magical places we create the space for you to connect with your own inner wisdom, to receive messages from the ancestors, messages that have meaning for you in this lifetime. We provide you with information about the sacred sites, but the real experience is how you respond to the emotions the landscapes and sites bring forth as you pass through the veil of time.

Special guests

A highlight of our tours are the local guests who have specialist knowledge and insights into the history, myths and legends of the places we visit. They include authors, poets and musicians.

When is the best time to go on your UK trip?

Spring (late March to early June) and autumn (September to November) are the optimal seasons to visit the United Kingdom. During these times, the weather is typically warm and dry, offering visitors the chance to witness the blooming of beautiful spring flowers or the vibrant changing of leaves in autumn. This period also allows tourists to steer clear of the busier summer months, enhancing their overall experience.

Why choose a small group tour?

Since 1983, Odyssey has been a distinguished provider of educational small group tours tailored for seniors , with group sizes typically ranging from 6 to 12 individuals, capped at a maximum of 18 travellers. Specializing in enriching educational, cultural, and heritage journeys, our programs are meticulously crafted to stimulate minds and push boundaries. Geared towards active and curious explorers, our tours offer a unique small group setting conducive to immersive learning experiences.

What's the accommodation like on a group tour?

In urban centres, Odyssey accommodates guests in conveniently situated 3-4 star hotels, offering convenient access to public transportation. For smaller communities or rural settings, our preference leans towards family-operated hotels or cosy guesthouses. For extended tours where guests remain in one place throughout the itinerary, we opt for serviced apartments to provide a comfortable and homely setting for our travellers.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

Odyssey Traveller specializes in catering to travelers aged 50, 60, 70, or 80 and above, whether they are exploring solo, with a partner, or in a group of friends. Your fellow travelers are likely to resonate with your interests, ensuring a shared experience in a setting of mutual understanding. Our programs are thoughtfully crafted with the mature traveler in focus. Even when journeying solo, you are never truly alone – during leisure time for exploration, there will be other solo travelers or couples eager to accompany you if you so desire. Notably, single travelers comprise about a third of our groups, with many becoming regular participants in our tours.

How big are the group sizes on your tours?

Odyssey specialises in educational small group tours , for seniors , typically groups between 6 to 12 people, and averages at 12 participants per tour, a mix of singles and couples.

First solo trip with Odyssey?

Odyssey provides a curated selection of authentic small group tours, which are strategically priced to mirror the intimate nature of these experiences. Unlike larger tour operators accommodating groups of 18 or more, our small group tours typically consist of 6 to 12 individuals. This ensures a personalized setting where travelers can relish evening meals together around a single dinner table. By prioritizing smaller group sizes, we prioritize creating an atmosphere where our clients can immerse themselves fully in the unique and engaging experiences we offer, rather than aiming for the economies of scale achievable with larger groups on coaches – an aspect of travel that distinguishes our tours at Odyssey.

Odyssey tours are genuinely based around;

  • A Small group tour of less than 18 people for the mature traveller as holidays for a couple and holidays for solo travellers over 50.
  • Knowledgeable local expert guides and a great tour leader who has an interest in the theme of the tour.
  • Inclusive pricing, including all entrances, tipping and the majority of meals included. That means, no hidden extras with respect to cost. Transparent pricing of the single supplement for the single traveller.
  • A learning based escorted tour with a like minded fellow traveller.
  • Accommodation in 3 & 4 star hotels and self catering apartments.
  • A blend of group learning, touring activities and free time to explore a place further, whether on a discovery or walking holiday program.
  • No name badges or flags to follow when out and about.
  • Travel to places that extend your learning and curiosity, often where others will not follow.
  • Spending typically between 60 to 85% of the operating cost of the tour in the country visited, benefiting the local communities directly.

Do you have any other holidays that aren't with a group?

Odyssey welcome enquiries for private groups, at a minimum of 6 participants.

What is a small group tour?

Odyssey Travel’s small group tours typically span 2 to 3 weeks, with stays of 2 to 3 nights in each location at quality 3 or 4 star hotels. These escorted tours offer a balanced mix of sightseeing and leisure time. Travelers have opportunities to break away from the group for a half or full day to explore independently or with companions before moving on to the next destination. For solo travelers over 50, Odyssey offers a wide selection of holidays, although they do not provide regular river cruises or specific solo travel tours.

Solo travelers booking Odyssey Travel tours will incur a single supplement fee, covering the cost of single occupancy accommodations with a double bed (single bed rooms are generally not available across Europe) or a single cabin on cruises. There are no extra charges beyond the single supplement for clients aged 50 and above booking solo travel packages, ensuring transparent pricing for all travelers.

Which countries do small group tours go to?

Odyssey Traveller offers an array of captivating tours spanning the globe, including Europe , The British Isles , Asia , Africa , The Middle East , and The Americas. Embark on an enchanting journey to witness the mystical Aurora Borealis in the remote corners of Norway, delve into the lush jungles of Madagascar to immerse yourself in its breathtaking landscapes and wildlife, or marvel at the ancient splendor of Machu Picchu in South America. For those intrigued by history, partake in a thematic exploration of Britain’s historic canals and railways . If cruising is your preference, join our unforgettable venture through Mongolia and Russia, featuring a 10-night river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg, or set sail on the legendary Nile Rive r during our Egypt tour.

For travelers seeking adventures closer to home, we offer an exceptional selection of tours in Australia , ranging from Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory to Kata Tjuta, Outback Queensland, Kangaroo Island, Tasmania, and New Zealand. World-travelling moss photographer highlights Tasmania as global diversity hotspot for mosses

By Sarah Abbott

Topic: Nature

Moss expert Des Callaghan travels the world photographing mosses, and has just completed a trip around Tasmania.

Mr Callaghan says the state is "exceptional" for moss diversity and abundance on a global scale.

What's next?

The images of Tasmanian mosses taken by Mr Callaghan will be donated to the public and freely available online, and included in a series of books currently in production.

Des Callaghan has his own special way of appreciating rainforests.

“I have to wear knee pads because I spend a lot of time crawling around on the ground,” he said.

“And I wear waterproofs consistently because it’s … pretty wet.”

But wet rainforest floors are prime habitat for mosses, which the UK-based Mr Callaghan travels the world to photograph.

“Tasmania in particular is globally important for bryophytes [mosses and liverworts],” he said.

"Once you start taking a close look … you can see a tremendous beauty and diversity.”

Mr Callaghan has travelled the world photographing mosses, and describes Tasmania as a "hotspot". ( ABC News: Sarah Abbott )

Tasmania a moss hotspot

Mr Callaghan works full-time as a bryologist, surveying sites for mosses for conservation purposes, mostly in England and Wales.

“And in my spare time, I'm travelling around the world to the hotspots for bryophytes, mainly to take photographs of them,” he said.

A man in a forest full of tree ferns, looking closely at moss growing on a trunk.

Mr Callaghan said a completely different set of mosses grows in the southern hemisphere, compared with the north. ( ABC News: Sarah Abbott )

Tasmania is one of those hotspots, and Mr Callaghan has just completed an 11-day moss photography tour of the island.

“There's about 800 species in Tasmania, so it's really special,” he said.

“And the old-growth forests that are left, mainly over on the west coast, are particularly brilliant for bryophytes on a global scale.”

Mr Callaghan remarked on the unusual abundance, diversity and size of Tasmania’s mosses.

“There are many striking species here that do not exist in the northern hemisphere”, he said.

“A lot of them are much, much bigger than the British Isles species,” he said.

“[But] it's that overall diversity which has been a highlight for me.”

Spotlight on the small-scale

Mosses were not always the focus of Mr Callaghan’s work, which began with birds.

“Birds are these big things which hit you in the face, and you can't really not notice them … most people have been engaged with the beauty of birds,” he said.

But mid-career he wanted to "plough a new furrow" and try something different.

“So I purposefully searched for a group of species which were overlooked,” he said.

After thinking of specialising in fungi and then lichens, Mr Callaghan said he finally landed on mosses.

“The first time I took up a hand lens and looked at mosses in the field … I was hooked on them, and I've been working on them full-time ever since.

“Most of our lives we don't engage with the small-scale world, and we walk past it and don't notice it,” he said.

But by using a bit of magnification, you are "blown away" by the beauty and diversity of what you see, he said.

The moss ‘money shot’

Mr Callaghan said his moss photography had led to many adventures, including two years ago in British Columbia, Canada.

He had spent three weeks there, searching for a certain "primitive" and very rare moss.

Having not found it by the time he was nearing the end of his trip, he investigated taking a water taxi to a remote inlet on a fjord, where he thought his chances of encountering it might be better.

Mr Callaghan wasn't quite ready to give up on his mission to find a rare moss in Canada. ( ABC News: Sarah Abbott )

“It was going to cost 800 Canadian dollars, so I ummed and ahed about it… [but] I thought, ‘I've got to do it while I'm here’,” he said.

After a choppy two-hour boat ride, Mr Callaghan was dropped off on a rocky shoreline, while the skipper went out to deeper waters to wait for him.

“I was busy hunting for this tiny little moss in the spray zone of this magnificent waterfall, but I was mindful of the fact that I was paying [the skipper] $200 an hour to wait,” he said.

Mr Callaghan said he was just starting to think the whole trip an "absolute waste of money" when he saw the "fantastic" moss he had been searching for.

He took his photographs, scrambled back to the boat, and considers the "most expensive moss photo ever" to be "worth every dollar".

Moss photography lowdown

Mr Callaghan said one challenge of photographing moss was working around the weather.

“Consistent, heavy rain is not good, and snow, of course, is the worst thing,” he said.

“But, otherwise, it's really a game of patience and waiting to find the best [moss] shoot in the right condition.”

Making a good image of a moss involves using a technique called focus stacking, which requires taking 40 to 50 shots of it.

A photograph of a moss on the LCD screen of a camera.

One of the many photos Mr Callaghan took of this specimen, used with others to create one final image. ( ABC News: Sarah Abbott )

“Then you process those to come up with one in-focus image at the end,” he said.

The photographs Mr Callaghan has taken of Tasmanian mosses will be freely available online for people to "use as they wish", as are all Mr Callaghan’s moss images.

“The intention of the photographs is to capture the beauty of mosses,” he said.

“And if they inspire one young person to become interested in mosses, it will all be worthwhile.”
