Apple's iPhone 15 guided tour video might already be in the can and here's why

The new iPhones are getting closer.

Render showing iPhone 15 Ultra in four colors

We would all be very surprised if Apple didn't announce the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro devices on September 12 at this point, and now it seems that the company is getting its ducks in a row ahead of time.

Every year, following the launch of a new collection of iPhones, Apple shares a new guided tour video that highlights what they have to offer. It appears that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro version of that video has already been filmed in Mexico City.

If true, it's just another indication that Apple's best iPhones yet are just around the corner.

A trip to Mexico

The guided tour video appears to have been filmed around the Antara flagship Apple Store in Mexico City after TikTok creator Cris Martínez shared that they saw it all go down on August 4. According to them, Apple closed off the area around the store which might not normally mean all that much. Except there's a kicker - a famous face was in attendance.

According to the creator's video, spotted by 9to5Mac , they spotted the actor that has so far been the lead in Apple's guided tour videos. He was used for the iPhone 13- and iPhone 14-series videos and it appears they'll be present and correct this year as well.

If this all went down as we're told it did, it looks like the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro were inside that Apple Store a month or so before we expect them to be unveiled officially.

That official unveiling is expected to also see Apple show off the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 for the first time, with all of the new products likely to go on sale on September 22. We can expect a new guided tour video to arrive around the same time, too.

Truedepth camera and face id, triple-lens rear camera, battery life, 5g connectivity, emergency sos via satellite, crash detection, bluetooth, wi-fi, nfc, gps, and ultra wideband, iphone 15 and 15 plus, beyond the iphone 15 pro, iphone 15 pro changelog, iphone 15 pro timeline.

Apple in September 2023 introduced the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, its new high-end flagship smartphones that are being sold alongside the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. The iPhone 15 Pro models have an expanded feature set not available in the standard iPhone 15 devices, including more advanced camera technology, a better display, a faster A17 chip, and more.

Available in the same 6.1- and 6.7-inch sizes as the iPhone 14 Pro models, the iPhone 15 Pro models have a similar design, but there are some notable changes. Rather than stainless steel, Apple is using a frame made out of a new titanium alloy that's also used for spacecraft, and there are new titanium colors including white , black , natural , and blue . Titanium is lighter than stainless steel so the iPhone 15 Pro models weigh less than the iPhone 14 Pro models.

The titanium has a new matte, brush texture and it is accompanied by an aluminum internal frame that improves thermal dissipation and the repairability of the back glass . Apple also tweaked the design, so the frame has more contoured edges and the display bezels are much thinner . The front of the iPhone continues to be protected by Apple's Ceramic Shield material, which it says is the toughest glass used in a smartphone.

Apple is using the same Super Retina XDR Display from last year with Always-On display technology and a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate . The iPhone 15 Pro Max features a resolution of 2796x1290 , while the iPhone 15 Pro has a resolution of 2556x1179 . Aside from the slimmed down bezels, there are no display changes, and it also features the same Dynamic Island at the top.

Rather than a Lightning port, the iPhone 15 Pro models have a USB-C port that offers USB 3 transfer speeds up to 10Gb/s . Charging is now done with a USB-C cable, so you can use the same cord for charging the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. With the USB-C port, an iPhone can be used to charge AirPods or an Apple Watch directly . 15W MagSafe charging continues to be available, and Apple added support for Qi2 wireless charging .

There's a customizable Action button that's modeled after the Action button on the Apple Watch Ultra, and it replaces the mute switch. It can be set to one of multiple functions, such as launching the camera , turning on Flashlight , recording a Voice Memo , or activating a Shortcut . The Action button ties in with the Dynamic Island for visual feedback that accompanies haptic feedback.

An upgraded 48-megapixel Main camera offers improved low-light performance and a new 24-megapixel default image resolution that offers high-quality images at a practical file size, an improvement over the prior 12-megapixel default. The Main camera can be adjusted to different focal lengths , including 24mm , 28mm , and 35mm , and there's an option to capture 48-megapixel HEIF images that take up less space than RAW images.

Portrait photos are now captured automatically whenever a person or pet is in the frame or you tap to focus, so you can adjust depth and focal point after capturing an image even if you don't select portrait mode. Images include sharper detail, more vivid colors, and better low-light performance. Night mode is sharper than before and Smart HDR 5 captures subjects and backgrounds with more true-to-life skin tones and brighter highlights, richer midtones, and deeper shadows when viewed in the Photos app.

There's a new Ultra Wide camera that lets in more light. The iPhone 15 Pro has a standard 3x Telephoto lens , but the iPhone 15 Pro Max is equipped with an upgraded 5x Telephoto lens that uses a new tetraprism design . Apple introduced a new optical image stabilization system that includes an autofocus 3D sensor-shift module for clearer photos.

The A17 Pro chip is Apple's first 3-nanometer chip , built on an updated node. Apple says that it includes the biggest GPU redesign in Apple history, and GPU performance is up to 20% faster than the A16. CPU performance is up to 10% faster . The new Neural Engine is up to 2x faster .

With the 6-core GPU , Apple was able to add hardware-accelerated ray tracing that allows the iPhone to run console games like Assassin's Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 4 for the first time, plus it enhances augmented reality apps . There is a dedicated AV1 decoder for more efficient video streaming. The A17 Pro powers a feature that allows the iPhone to be connected to external storage for recording 4K 60fps ProRes video right to the storage device. To accompany this feature, Apple has added an option for Log encoding , making the iPhone 15 Pro models the first smartphones to support the Academy Color Encoding System used by filmmakers.

Later in the year, the iPhone 15 Pro models will be able to record 3D spatial video that can be viewed on the Apple Vision Pro when it launches next year.

Apple added a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip that allows two iPhones with the chip to connect at a 3x longer range. The improved connectivity powers a new Precision Finding for Find My friends feature that lets you locate your friends in crowded areas with Precision Finding. Wi-Fi 6E support is included for up to 2x faster Wi-Fi speeds and access to 6GHz bands when paired with a Wi-Fi 6E router. Thread support has been added as well, for future integrations in the Home app.

Emergency SOS via satellite is being expanded to include Emergency Roadside Assistance via satellite , so if you have a car issue in an area without cellular or Wi-Fi signal, you can use satellite services to contact AAA , Apple's partner for the endeavor in the U.S.

iPhone 15 Pro pricing starts at $999 for the base model with 128GB of storage, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a starting price of $1,199 for 256GB of storage. If you need more storage space, there are options to upgrade to higher storage capacities at an additional cost.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are available for purchase from the online Apple Store, Apple retail stores, carriers, and other authorized third-party retailers. Apple introduced the iPhone 15 Pro models at its media event on September 12 with pre-orders beginning on September 15 and availability starting on September 22.

Reviews of the iPhone 15 Pro were generally positive . While there weren't major design changes, Apple refined a number of features that make the iPhone 15 Pro a worthwhile update, especially if you have anything older than an iPhone 14 Pro.

The switch to USB-C will require getting rid of years worth of Lightning cables, but reviewers felt that the transition was worth it for the convenience of being able to charge an iPhone, iPad, and Mac with the same cable.

Apple replaced the mute switch with an Action Button, but some reviewers struggled to find a good use for it. The camera wasn't more convenient, for example, but it can be customized and changed until a useful function is found.

Reviewers were pleased with the titanium frame, and even though the iPhone 15 Pro is only nine percent lighter than the 14 Pro, it feels even lighter than that because of the different weight distribution. While Apple didn't announce battery changes, some battery tests found that the iPhone 15 Pro lasted longer than the 14 Pro.

The camera was described as the best camera Apple has come out with to date, particularly in the case of the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 5x zoom. For more on what reviewers thought of the iPhone 15 Pro models, we have a dedicated review roundup .

Some iPhone 15 Pro owners have complained about heat issues, with the iPhone overheating during benchmarks that stress the CPU and GPU. Other iPhone 15 Pro users have seen heat problems during the device's initial setup and when talking on the phone.

Apple said that there was a bug in iOS 17 that was causing the problem, along with issues in some apps like Instagram and Uber. Apple addressed the i0S 17 issue in iOS 17.0.3, and has worked with app developers to fix the app problem.

Some users have run into issues with power banks and CarPlay due to incompatibilities with the USB-C port. Apple will likely address these problems in an upcoming software update.

iPhone 15 owners who have a BMW might want to avoid using the in-car wireless charger, as there have been reports that it can damage the NFC chip in the iPhone. Several BMW owners have complained that their iPhone 15's NFC chip has become non-functional after using the charging pad, but Apple and BMW have not yet acknowledged the issue.

The 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max (measured diagonally at the display) have the same general design as the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, but with more contoured edges that change the feel of the devices in the hand and lend a more modern design.

iphone 15 pro

Rather than stainless steel, the iPhone 15 Pro models have titanium bands that encompass the glass front and back. Titanium is lighter weight than stainless steel, so the new models are much less heavy, and the material is also resistant to scratches and dings.

The titanium bands are bonded with an internal aluminum frame for strength and durability, with the titanium finish offering a brushed, matte look that sets the new iPhone 15 Pro models apart from the prior-generation devices. According to Apple, the finish is obtained using precision machining, sanding, brushing, and blasting. The titanium iPhone models are available in four colors: white, black, natural, and blue.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro lineup color lineup 230912

Aside from weight, the dimensions of the iPhone 15 Pro models are similar to the iPhone 14 Pro models, though they are thicker. The iPhone 15 Pro measures in at 5.77 inches (146.6 mm) tall, 2.78 inches (70.6 mm) wide, and 0.32 inches (8.25 mm) thick, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max measures in at 6.29 inches (159.9 mm) tall, 3.02 inches (76.7 mm) wide, and 0.32 inches (8.25mm) thick. The iPhone 15 Pro weighs 6.60 ounces (187 grams), while the iPhone 15 Pro Max weighs 7.81 ounces (221 grams). Both models are just a bit heavier than the their respective iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus counterparts, and are lighter than the prior-generation Pro models.

The iPhone 15 Pro models feature an all-glass front protected by Apple's durable Ceramic Shield material, which the company says is stronger than other smartphone glass.

There continues to be a pill-shaped Dynamic Island at the top of the display, housing the TrueDepth camera equipment. The display bezels have been notably slimmed down this year for more available screen space.

iPhone 15 Pro Internal Chassis

A set of antenna bands is located at the top and sides of the phone, and there is a power button on the right side and volume buttons and an Action button on the left. Exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models, the Action button can be set to do everything from turning on the camera to activating a shortcut, and it is customizable.

Underneath the power button, there's a 5G mmWave antenna, but this is limited to iPhone 15 models sold in the United States. Speaker holes and a microphone are located on the bottom of the iPhone 15 Pro models, along with another major design change - a USB-C port. The USB-C port replaces the Lightning port as Apple has swapped to USB-C charging technology. In some countries, there is a SIM slot on the left side of the iPhone, but the physical SIM has been eliminated in the U.S.

iphone 15 blue 2

The camera bump at the back of the iPhone is largely unchanged, and it features a triple-lens setup for the Wide, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto cameras along with a True Tone flash, LiDAR Scanner, and microphone.

Water and Dust Resistance

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have an IP68 rating for resistance to water and dust intrusion. The smartphones are able to withstand a depth of up to six meters (19.7 feet) for up to 30 minutes.

In the IP68 number, the 6 refers to dust resistance (and means the iPhone 15 Pro can hold up to dirt, dust, and other particulates), while the 8 pertains to water resistance. IP6x is the highest dust resistance rating that exists. With the IP68 rating, the iPhone 15 Pro can withstand splashes, rain, and accidental water exposure, but intentional water exposure should be avoided.

Water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions, according to Apple, and can deteriorate over time as a result of normal wear. Apple's standard warranty does not cover liquid damage, which means it's best to use caution when it comes to liquid exposure.

Compared to last year's iPhone models, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have the same OLED Super Retina XDR display with the same specifications including 1000 nits max brightness, 1600 nits peak HDR brightness, and 2000 nits peak outdoor brightness.

The iPhone 15 Pro has a resolution of 2556 by 1179 with 460 pixels per inch, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a resolution of 2796 by 1290 with 460 pixels per inch.

There is a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, wide color support offers vivid, true-to-life colors, and True Tone matches the white balance of the display to the ambient lighting for a paper-like viewing experience that's easier on the eyes. There's also a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating and support for Haptic Touch, which provides haptic feedback when interacting with the display.

The display continues to be protected by a "Ceramic Shield" material that is made by infusing nano-ceramic crystals into glass. The ceramic crystals were manipulated to optimize for clarity while maintaining toughness, with the display created in partnership with Corning. According to Apple, Ceramic Shield is the toughest smartphone glass, with a dual-ion exchange process ensuring protection against scratches and everyday wear and tear.

Dynamic Island

The iPhone 15 Pro models continue to use the Dynamic Island, which houses the TrueDepth camera sensor for Face ID and the front-facing camera. The proximity sensor for the setup is now under the display, and smaller cutouts are used for the camera, dot protector, and other components.

iphone 15 dynamic island expanded

The display has a small circular cutout on the right side that's for the camera, and a pill-shaped cutout on the left side for the TrueDepth system for Face ID. Apple is using software to combine these two cutouts into one pill-shaped cutout that makes up the Dynamic Island.

Apple has turned the Dynamic Island into part of the iPhone's interface, and it is used as a front-and-center information hub for notifications and other at-a-glance information from apps and services. When you make an Apple Pay payment, for example, Dynamic Island expands into a square shape to confirm your Face ID scan, and when on a phone call, it expands so you have phone controls at your fingertips.

It can display everything from Maps directions to timers to Apple Music and the AirPods connection status. It integrates with Live Activities for tracking sports scores, Uber rides, and more right from the top of the iPhone's display without leaving the app you're in, plus it can collapse down or open up when tapped.

The iPhone 15 Pro models support ProMotion technology with adaptive refresh rates that range from 1Hz to 120Hz.

The refresh rate of the display changes based on what's on the screen. So if you're reading a website that's static, the iPhone will use a lower refresh rate, but if you're playing a game, watching a movie, or scrolling through content, you'll see higher 120Hz refresh rates that provide a smoother and more responsive experience.

Always-On Display

Like the iPhone 14 Pro models, the iPhone 15 Pro models include an Always-On display. With the Always-On display, the time and widgets stay active on the Lock Screen, while the wallpaper is darkened to give it a subtle look. The status bar, flashlight, and camera buttons are hidden when the display is not active.

iphone 14 pro always on display

When the iPhone is in a pocket or face down, the screen does turn off completely to preserve battery life.

The iPhone 15 Pro models are equipped with the A17 Pro chip, which is Apple's first chip built on the new 3-nanometer process. The A17 Pro includes a 6-core CPU with two high-performance cores and four efficiency cores, along with a 6-core GPU.

A17 Feature Dark

The GPU is 20 percent faster than the GPU in the A16 Bionic, and the CPU is 10 percent faster. The 16-core Neural Engine is up to 2x faster, performing nearly 35 trillion operations per second.

According to Apple, the A17 Pro features the biggest redesign in the history of Apple GPUs. It includes hardware-accelerated ray tracing for gaming purposes, offering more fluid graphics and true-to-life lighting. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing is up to four times faster than software-based ray tracing, and with MetalFX upscaling, the GPU and Neural Engine are able to produce high-resolution graphics without a huge amount of power draw.

The iPhone 15 Pro is the first iPhone that is capable of playing console-quality games like Resident Evil 4 and Death Stranding.

Geekbench benchmark results have confirmed that the A17 Pro offers notably faster performance than the prior-generation A16 Bionic, earning a single-core score of 2,908 and a multi-core score of 7,238.

There is 8GB RAM in the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, up 2GB from the iPhone 14 Pro models.

Storage Space

The iPhone 15 Pro starts with 128GB of storage space, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts with 256GB of storage space. Both models are available with as much as 1TB of storage space.

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models are the first to feature a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port, allowing them to be charged with a USB-C cable. With this change, the same cord can be used for charging the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C charging case.

iphone 15 pro usb c

USB-C allows an iPhone to directly charge AirPods or an Apple Watch using a USB-C cable, and the iPhone is able to provide up to 4.5W. It's even possible to charge another iPhone with the iPhone 15 Pro models, though charging speeds are slow.

On the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the USB-C port supports USB 3 for transfer speeds of up to 10Gb/s. Note that to get these transfer speeds, an appropriate USB-C cable is required. The cable that comes with the devices is limited to USB 2 speeds.

The Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max replaces the Ring/Silent switch above the volume buttons on the left side. Apple designed the Action button to be customizable, and it can be set to perform one of several different actions in the Settings app.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro lineup Action button 230912

  • Focus : Activate or deactivate a Focus mode (Do Not Disturb is the default).
  • Camera : Take a photo (the default), a selfie, video, portrait, or portrait selfie.
  • Flashlight : Turn the flashlight on or off.
  • Voice Memos : Start or stop recording a voice memo with the Voice Memos app.
  • Magnifier : Activate the Magnifier app to use the iPhone's camera as a magnifying glass to zoom in on small text or objects.
  • Shortcuts : Open your favorite app, or run a shortcut created in or downloaded from the Shortcuts app, such as sending a message, playing a playlist, or controlling smart home devices.
  • Accessibility : Access to various Vision settings (Classic Invert, Color Filters, Detection Mode, Increase Contrast, Reduce Motion, Reduce Transparency, Reduce White Point, Smart Invert, VoiceOver, Zoom) Motor settings (Switch Control, Voice Control, Full Keyboard Access, AssistiveTouch, Apple Watch Mirroring, Control Nearby Devices) Hearing settings (Background Sounds, Left/Right Balance, Live Captions) and General settings (Guided Access, Live Speech).
  • Silent Mode : Like the Ring/Silent switch on existing iPhone models, toggle silent mode on or off, which will mute or unmute the ringer and alerts.
  • Translate : Later this year, there will be a Translate action that will launch the Translate app and start a text or conversation translation.
  • No Action .

Activating the Action button is done with a long press, which limits it from being hit accidentally.

The iPhone 15 Pro models continue to use Face ID, Apple's facial recognition system that's built into the Dynamic Island.

Face ID is used across iOS for unlocking the iPhone, allowing access to third-party passcode-protected apps, confirming app purchases, authenticating Apple Pay payments, and more.

Face ID works through a set of sensors and cameras. A Dot Projector projects tens of thousands of invisible infrared dots onto the surface of the skin to create a 3D facial scan that maps the curves and planes of each face, with the scan read by an infrared camera.

The facial depth map is relayed to the A17 chip where it is transformed into a mathematical model that the iPhone uses to authenticate identity. Face ID works in low light and in the dark, and with hats, beards, glasses, sunglasses, scarves, masks, and other accessories that partially obscure the face.

Front-Facing Camera

The iPhone 15 Pro models include the same 12-megapixel front-facing camera with an ƒ /1.9 aperture that was available in the iPhone 14 Pro lineup. The front-facing camera has a built-in Retina Flash, and it supports almost all of the same features available in the rear cameras.

Apple has included selfie Night mode, improved Smart HDR 5 integration, Dolby Vision HDR recording, Deep Fusion to bring out fine details, a Photonic Engine that improves low-light performance, and next-generation Portrait mode that lets you take images and turn them into portrait shots later.

4K video recording, QuickTake video, slo-mo video, Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting, and the Photographic Styles feature for selectively applying edits are also supported on the front-facing camera.

The iPhone 15 Pro models use the same 48-megapixel Main camera that was introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro, but with the A17 Pro chip, there are new capabilities. The camera features a 24mm focal length with an ƒ/1.78 aperture and second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization for less movement and crisper photos and videos.

This year, the lens supports 24-megapixel and 48-megapixel high-resolution photos through the Photonic Engine, rather than 12-megapixel and 48-megapixel. Apple says that the new 24-megapixel setting offers ultra high-resolution at a reasonable file size, and both the 24-megapixel and 48-megapixel photos can be saved in a standard HEIF image file format and are not limited to RAW.

f 4d62f49966d4af93a651379f09657fba6cc3c770

Using computational photography, the Main camera can be set to 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm focal lengths to better mirror what's possible with DSLRs. These different focal lengths can be tapped when taking a photo and are reflected as different zoom levels. Apple says that the triple-lens camera and the different Main camera options are the equivalent of having seven lenses in your pocket.

Apple is using the same Ultra Wide camera with an ƒ/2.2 aperture, and this lens is also used for macro shots. The third Telephoto lens is what sets the Pro models apart from the standard iPhone 15 models.

The iPhone 15 Pro has a 12-megapixel Telephoto camera that offers 3x zoom, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max is using an upgraded Telephoto system that allows for 5x zoom. The iPhone 15 Pro Max has a folded glass structure below the lens, which Apple refers to as tetraprism technology. It reflects light four times over, allowing for a longer focal length of 120mm.

Apple is using 3D sensor-shift optical image stabilization for the Telephoto lens in the Pro Max, and because it is able to move in three directions, it delivers twice as many microadjustments as before for crisp photos even when zoomed all the way in.

Video Capabilities

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max offer up to 4K video recording at 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. HDR recording, ProRes video, Cinematic mode, Action mode, slo-mo video, and time-lapse are all supported.

Portrait Mode Update

Apple overhauled Portrait mode with the iPhone 15 lineup, and there is no longer a need to specifically choose Portrait mode before capturing an image.

You can now snap a photo and if there is a person or pet, depth information is collected and Portrait mode is enabled automatically with a blurred background effect. This also works if you tap to focus on an area in an image, and you can turn it on or off in the Photos app.

The degree of background blur can be adjusted as usual, and you can also shift the focus between objects that are in the scene in the Photos app. Apple says that Portrait images feature more detail and richer color, even in Night mode, plus Portrait images can also now be Live Photos.

Spatial Video

With iOS 17.2, Apple is adding a feature that allows iPhone 15 Pro owners to record spatial video that can be viewed on the forthcoming Apple Vision Pro headset. 3D video just shows up as standard 2D video on the iPhone and other devices, but when the headset comes out, spatial videos captured will be in 3D on the headset.

spatial video iphone 15 pro

Several members of the media have been able to test the spatial video feature on the Vision Pro, and the feature has been described as so lifelike that it's almost creepy. The Wall Street Journal 's Joanna Stern said that it creates intimacy that 2D photos do not, while CNET 's Scott Stein said that the videos are easy to record with the iPhone 15 Pro models and look "compellingly realistic."

Other Camera Features

There are several other camera bells and whistles that Apple has been adding to the iPhones over the years.

  • Smart HDR 5 - Recognizes one or more people in a scene and optimizes contrast, lighting, and even skin tones for each person so everyone looks their best. Smart HDR was been upgraded in the iPhone 15 Pro to deliver better color and more true-to-life skin tones.
  • Photonic Engine - The Photonic Engine combines the best pixels from a high-resolution image and an image optimized for light capture, leading to a 24-megapixel image with detail drawn from an image twice the resolution.
  • Photographic Styles - Smart, adjustable filters that can do things like boost or mute colors without affecting skin tone. Styles apply selectively to an image, unlike a filter that's applied to the entire image. Photographic Styles include Vibrant (boosts colors), Rich Contrast (darker shadows and deeper colors), Warm (accentuates golden undertones), or Cool (accentuates blue undertones). Tone and Warmth are customizable for each style, so you can get the exact look that you want.
  • Night mode - Takes a series of images over a few seconds and aggregates them to allow for photography in extreme low lighting situations. Night mode scenes feature richer color and sharper detail with the iPhone 15 Pro.
  • Deep Fusion - Works in mid to low lighting conditions and brings out the texture and detail in the image.
  • Macro - The Ultra Wide camera activates when you are close to a subject, shifting into Macro mode.
  • Portrait Lighting - Changes the lighting of Portrait mode photos with effects that include Natural, Studio, Contour, Stage, Stage Mono, and High-Key Mono.
  • True Tone flash - True Tone flash is the built-in flash, and it is designed to match the ambient lighting so it doesn't throw off the white balance of the photo when used. The iPhone 15 Pro flash is brighter and it has more consistent lighting.
  • Cinematic mode - A video mode that keeps the focus on the main subject that you're filming even as you move.
  • Action mode - Enhances image stabilization to improve shaky handheld video.
  • Panorama - Captures panoramic shots up to 63 megapixels.

  • ACES support - The iPhone 15 Pro is the first smartphone that offers Academy Color Encoding System support, which is useful for pro filmmakers.

There is a 3,274 mAh battery in the iPhone 15 Pro, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 4,422 mAh battery, both just a bit higher-capacity than the batteries from the respective prior-generation models. The iPhone 15 Pro offers up to 23 hours of battery life for video playback, up to 20 hours for streaming video playback, and up to 75 hours for audio playback.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max offers up to 29 hours of video playback, up to 25 hours of streaming video playback, and up to 95 hours of audio playback. All iPhone 15 models are fast-charge capable and can charge up to 50 percent in 30 to 35 minutes with a 20W or higher power adapter.

iPhone 15 models show the battery cycle count for the first time, and there is also a built-in setting to prevent an iPhone from charging past 80 percent to preserve battery health.

The iPhone 15 Pro models are equipped with a next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 modem that supports 5G connectivity. Qualcomm says that the X70 modem features the first 5G AI system in a modem system, using AI to enable faster 5G speeds, better coverage, lower latency, and improved power efficiency.

In the United States, iPhone owners can connect to both mmWave and sub-6GHz networks, while other countries are limited to sub-6GHz. mmWave 5G networks are the fastest 5G networks, but mmWave is short-range and can be obscured by buildings, trees, and other obstacles, so its use is limited to major cities and urban areas along with venues like stadiums, airports, and other places where a lot of people congregate.

Sub-6GHz 5G is more widespread and available in urban, suburban, and rural areas across the United States and other countries. For the most part, when you use a 5G network, you'll be using sub-6GHz 5G. Sub-6GHz 5G is typically faster than LTE, especially when mid-band spectrum is used, but it isn't always the blazing fast 5G that you expect.

5G tests have suggested that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support 5G download speeds that are up to 27 percent faster than the download speeds available on the iPhone 14.

The iPhone 15 Pro models in the United States support more than 20 5G bands. The following bands are supported:

  • Sub-6GHz 5G - 5G NR (Bands n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n14, n20, n25, n26, n28, n29, n30, n38, n40, n41, n48, n53, n66, n70, n71, n77, n78, n79)
  • mmWave 5G - Bands n258, n260, n261

The iPhone 15 Pro models continue to offer Gigabit LTE with 4x4 MIMO for connecting to LTE networks when 5G is unavailable. The following bands are supported:

  • FDD-LTE - Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71
  • TD-LTE - Bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 46, 48, 53

All iPhone 15 models can connect to satellites in emergency situations when cellular and Wi-Fi connections are not available. Apple has designed the new Emergency SOS via satellite feature to allow the iPhone's antennas to connect to satellites operated by Globalstar.

emergency sos via satellite

Satellite communications are available in emergency situations where you can't connect to Wi-Fi or a cellular tower, and the feature is designed to be used in open spaces with few trees so the iPhone can connect to a satellite that's in the sky.

Apple has a walkthrough interface that instructs you how to hold the iPhone to connect to a satellite, and the company has developed a compressed messaging protocol because sending data via satellite can take minutes. In an area with no trees, a short message to emergency services can send in as little as 15 seconds.

Emergency SOS via satellite provides a series of important questions that you answer when it is activated, with these questions aimed at getting necessary details to emergency personnel as quickly as possible. The answers that you provide are sent directly to emergency services if text communication is supported in your area, or sent to relay centers staffed by Apple-trained specialists who can call emergency services on the user's behalf.

Satellite connectivity is mainly designed to allow users to contact emergency services in dire situations, but it can also be used to update your Find My location if you're camping or hiking off the grid, giving your family and friends peace of mind about where you are.

  • How to Demo or Use the Emergency SOS via Satellite Service
  • How to Share Your Location via Satellite With Find My

Emergency SOS via satellite is free for all iPhone 15 users for two years, and Apple has not yet provided details on what it will cost in the future.

Apple with the iPhone 15 models also added Roadside Assistance via satellite, which allows U.S. iPhone users to contact AAA for help if they have car trouble in an area without cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity. There is no charge for the satellite usage with Roadside Assistance, but a AAA membership or one-time fee for the AAA help is required.

There's a high dynamic range gyroscope and a dual-core accelerometer capable of detecting G-force measurements of up to 256Gs in the iPhone 15 models, and paired with other iPhone sensors like a barometer that can detect cabin pressure changes caused by deployed airbags, this hardware enables a Crash Detection feature.

iphone 14 pro car crash detection

The iPhone 15 models can detect a severe car crash and automatically dial emergency services when the car's occupants are seriously injured or unable to reach their phones. The GPS in the iPhone is able to detect speed changes, and the microphone is able to recognize loud sounds associated with severe car crashes. Crash Detection is also available on the Apple Watch, and the iPhone and Apple Watch work together to contact emergency services when an accident occurs.

  • How Crash Detection Works and How to Turn It Off

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max support Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) with 4x4 MIMO, and Bluetooth 5.3. Wi-Fi 6E is faster than the Wi-Fi 6 used in the iPhone 14 Pro models, and it allows the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max to connect to the 6GHz Wi-Fi network broadcast by Wi-Fi 6E routers.

There's an NFC chip with reader mode, and a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. The new Ultra Wideband chip provides improved spatial awareness, allowing iPhone 15 Pro models to more precisely locate other Apple devices with an Ultra Wideband chip. The chip allows two iPhones to connect to each other at three times the range as before.

The Ultra Wideband chip can be used for precision tracking, such as when locating AirTags. It is also used for directional AirDrop and for interactions with the HomePod mini, plus Apple has added a Precision Finding feature for locating friends with an iPhone 15 in a crowded area.

As for GPS, the iPhone 15 Pro models support GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, and BeiDou location services.

There continue to be MagSafe magnets at the back of the iPhone 15 models, with those magnets able to connect to the MagSafe charger and other magnetic accessories. Official MagSafe chargers from Apple and authorized third parties can wirelessly charge the iPhone 15 models at up to 15W.

magsafe charger new purple

Second-generation Qi-based charging is also available, but it still maxes out at 7.5W and does not support faster charging.

Apple is selling the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max alongside the more affordable iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus devices.

Compared to the iPhone 15 Pro models, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus have an aluminum frame rather than titanium, thicker bezels, the prior-generation A16 Bionic chip, no ProMotion or Always-On display, and no zoom lens. They share the same USB-C port (though the iPhone 15 models have slower USB 2 transfer speeds), 5G connectivity, and Dynamic Island.

The 2024 iPhone 16 lineup could see an update to the "Pro" iPhone display sizes, with the smaller iPhone 16 Pro adopting a 6.3-inch display and the larger Pro Max adopting a 6.9-inch display. There have also been rumors of an even higher-end "Ultra" model.

Other potential additions include solid-state buttons, a faster A18 chip, Wi-Fi 7, and notable camera improvements.

Why the new iPhone 15 and 15 Pro are game changers for travelers

Zach Griff

Sometimes, the smallest changes can make the biggest impact.

And that's especially the case with Apple's brand-new iPhone 15 and 15 Pro smartphones , which debuted last week at the tech giant's "Wanderlust" press event.

Now that the devices are available for sale in stores and online, you're probably wondering if this is the year to upgrade.

iphone 15 tour

As a road warrior, I'm always looking for devices that will upgrade my travel experience . After a few days of testing the new phones, I can confidently say that the iPhone 15 family will undoubtedly improve the way I get around.

Despite retaining the same general aesthetic as recent generations, this year's iPhone lineup packs some small but mighty updates that should make this the smartphone of choice for many travelers.

Here's why.

2-way USB-C charging

It all starts with how you actually charge the new iPhones.

iphone 15 tour

Over the last decade, you've probably become very familiar with Apple's proprietary Lightning port at the bottom of every iPhone. This year, however, the tech giant has officially retired the Lightning connection in favor of USB-C.

This universal standard is far more ubiquitous globally and has countless benefits for travelers.

For one, it means you'll no longer need to carry multiple charging cables for all your devices. The swap to a USB-C port means your iPhone, iPad and Mac (and many other non-Apple devices) can all now be charged with a single USB-C charging cable — no more separate cable required just to power your iPhone.

iphone 15 tour

Moreover, since USB-C is the new industry standard charging port, you should have no problem finding one of these cables on the go if you forget to pack one. (And don't worry, each new iPhone includes a stylish white braided USB-C charging cable in the box).

iphone 15 tour

The switch to USB-C has already helped reduce cable clutter in my backpack, but it gets even better.

With the introduction of USB-C, you can now use your iPhone to charge other small devices, including the second-generation AirPods Pro with a USB-C port, an Apple Watch or even another iPhone, as well as some smaller third-party devices, too.

Of course, charging other devices will eat up your iPhone battery — I lost about 10% of charge to deliver 25% of charge to my Apple Watch — but being able to use my primary smartphone as a battery pack is a very helpful "insurance policy" against my other devices dying.

iphone 15 tour

The switch to USB-C also speeds up data transfers and supports sharing to external displays, some features that many pro-level users will appreciate.

A handful of Apple products still use the Lightning port (including the AirPods Max and some iPads), but as the company fully transitions to USB-C, travelers have lots to get excited about.

iphone 15 tour

This small change at the bottom of every iPhone unlocks much more power — no pun intended — for every traveler with an iPhone 15.

Action Button for easier access

Until now, every iPhone model has shipped with a ring/silent switch. But if you're anything like me, your iPhone stays on silent all day long, essentially turning this little switch into a small space for dust to collect.

With the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple introduced an all-new Action Button (similar to what's found on the Apple Watch Ultra ) instead of the ring/silent switch.

iphone 15 tour

As part of the change, you now have nearly unlimited options for what this switch can do. You can program the Action Button during initial setup and in the settings app. Apple provides a handful of popular preprogrammed functions, including opening the camera, turning on the flashlight and recording a voice memo.

iphone 15 tour

I experimented with using the Action Button to open the camera, and I found this to be the fastest way possible to grab a shot while on the go.

iphone 15 tour

Unless you're like me and always snapping pictures while you're traveling, you may want to use this button for something else, such as checking your flight status.

The great news is that there are nearly infinite customization options through the Shortcut app. You can set it to open your favorite airline app or start a timer for when boarding begins. And, since it's entirely powered by software, you can change the function as frequently as you'd like.

iphone 15 tour

Another small change with powerful implications for travelers.

Dynamic Island on all iPhones

Last year, Apple introduced the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max , and this year, every single iPhone 15, including the base models, features this new island "destination."

iphone 15 tour

While the tech giant has created some helpful first-party notifications for this pill-shaped cutout, several third-party developers have taken this experience to the next level, especially for travelers. From keeping track of your flight status with United Airlines or Flighty to getting a live countdown until your Uber or Lyft arrives, the Dynamic Island has helped make life on the road more efficient.

iphone 15 tour

By bringing the Dynamic Island to the entire iPhone 15 family, Apple's most affordable new smartphones are more powerful than ever before.

Portability and durability

Both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models received a travel-friendly redesign this year.

iphone 15 tour

Most notably, the Pro models are now made from titanium. When this was first announced, I wasn't really sure how the Pro models would feel in my hand and pocket, but after just a few days, there's no going back.

iphone 15 tour

Not only are these the lightest Pro models Apple has ever made (definitely noticeable from the moment I picked them up), but the thinner borders also help make my content pop across the entire front face of the phone. Plus, the rounded edges feel better in my hand than the previous models.

iphone 15 tour

Of course, the shift to titanium should also bring some notable durability improvements to these devices — a key feature for frequent travelers who are always on planes and trains. I haven't dropped my phone yet, but the titanium design should, in theory, mean that it won't damage as easily as an older phone. (If it does get damaged, the good news is that the new back enclosure can now be fixed for between $169 and $199, relative to the much higher $449 to $549 out-of-pocket repair cost on last year's models.)

As a whole, the iPhone 15 family feels more premium than before. The back glass now embeds the color into a single piece of glass and has rounded edges.

iphone 15 tour

While Apple has taken a big step forward in the iPhone design, the same can't necessarily be said for the company's new first-party cases, some of which are now made from a proprietary so-called FineWoven material that replaces the leather cases Apple used to sell.

iphone 15 tour

In my testing, I found that the case quickly showed lots of smudges and nicks from fingerprints. I'd recommend ordering an Apple-branded silicone case instead (or just heading to Amazon for something more affordable).

Satellite connectivity gets more powerful

The iPhone 15 family takes satellite connectivity to the next "stratosphere." In addition to the existing Emergency SOS via satellite service , the iPhone 15 introduces roadside assistance in the U.S.

I don't currently own a car, but I am a frequent renter, especially when I'm traveling to national parks. I love the outdoors, which means I often go places without cell service.

iphone 15 tour

In the past, that meant I was entirely off the grid if something bad happened. But with satellite connectivity on the iPhone 15 family, I will be reassured that I can contact help if needed.

With the new roadside assistance feature, you can connect with AAA if something goes wrong with your car, even if you don't have cell service. (This service is free for AAA members and can be purchased on a one-time basis by nonmembers.)

I hope to never use this feature, but it's good to know it's there if something goes wrong.

The good news is that you don't necessarily need to upgrade to take advantage of this service. Every iPhone 14 features satellite connectivity and can also connect to the roadside assistance service as of Friday.

Camera boosts

As they say, the best camera is the one that's with you, and for many travelers, that's a smartphone.

iphone 15 tour

This year, Apple brought some serious camera upgrades to both the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro. While I haven't yet been on the road to put them to the test, my initial impressions are that this might just be the biggest leap forward yet.

iphone 15 tour

Not only do the phones include a range of new lens options — a whopping seven choices on the iPhone 15 Pro models — but they also feature upgrades to the software that processes images.

iphone 15 tour

I've already seen some noticeable boosts in low-light photography, which will be great for airplane cabins and hotel room tours taken at night.

Future-proof technology

There are no two ways about it: Upgrading your phone is a significant investment. However, these new devices are packed with technologies that shouldn't become outdated in just a few months.

Perhaps the most exciting one is a new Ultra Wideband chip. This technology tells you how close you are to an AirTag or a friend you follow on Find My Friends.

The new chip enables up to three times the range, which means that finding your friend or loved one (who also uses a new iPhone) at a loud concert or crowded airport will be easier.

iphone 15 tour

Other tech upgrades include Wi-Fi 6E (on the iPhone 15 Pro) and the second-generation Qi wireless charging standards for both models — two technologies that are slowly becoming more popular.

iphone 15 tour

Just like last year, iPhone 15 models exclusively support eSIM (or embedded SIM cards) , which means that connecting to your cell provider is done exclusively via software on the phone — a major change that Apple debuted last year .

IOS 17 upgrades

Along with the new hardware come some software improvements in the form of iOS 17, which was released to all recent iPhone users on Monday.

The software includes some travel-friendly features that I've already incorporated into my routine, including standby mode, Live Voicemail, check-in and shared AirTags.

iphone 15 tour

Standby mode essentially replaces the traditional alarm clock. It allows you to dock your phone in the horizontal orientation and view the time, weather and any other essential information while the phone charges overnight.

In the above photo, I'm using Belkin's 2-in-1 wireless charger stand, which works perfectly for standby mode.

iphone 15 tour

Meanwhile, Live Voicemail is a game changer for me when I'm busy on the road. When I send calls to voicemail, it automatically transcribes the message in real time. If I notice that it's something urgent, I can still pick up the phone without missing the call.

Note that this feature uses cellular data; additional calling rates may apply if you're roaming.

iphone 15 tour

Check-in lets my friends and family set automatic geofences to alert me when they get home, and sharing AirTags means that multiple people can track the same suitcase or backpack during the journey.

Bottom line

Smartphones have become an essential part of travel, and Apple's brand-new iPhone 15 family takes this experience to the next level.

In fact, three of the physically smallest changes pack major upgrades for those who are always on the move. This includes the all-new USB-C charging port, which can even charge other small devices, the Action Button on the Pro-level models and the Dynamic Island on the entry-level iPhone 15s.

iphone 15 tour

Combined with a new design on both models, along with serious camera upgrades and some future-forward technologies, these are Apple's best travel-friendly phones yet.

If you're still on the fence about upgrading, this might just be the year to do it, especially if you're carrying around an iPhone 13 or earlier.

iPhone 15 — 6 reasons to buy and 3 reasons to skip

Here's a closer look at the iPhone 15's pros and cons

iPhone 15 reasons to buy and skip

  • Reasons to buy
  • Reasons to skip

The new iPhone 15 figures to divide opinion. For some, it's a phone whose greatest claims to fame revolve around features introduced a year ago. For others, it'll be the chance to enjoy premium features previously limited to Apple's Pro handsets for a couple hundred dollars less.

For what's it worth, phones editor John Velasco came away impressed after his iPhone 15 hands-on time, praising the device's upgraded camera and the Dynamic Island feature it picked up from the iPhone 14 Pro . And phone shoppers are sure to be tempted by the $799 starting price — exactly what Apple charged for the more limited iPhone 14 a year ago.

But just because a phone offers some appealing feature doesn't mean it's necessarily the right device for you. Here's a closer look at the iPhone 15 features that impressed us and the ones that might have us considering another handset instead.

iPhone 15: Reasons to buy

A great camera upgrade.

Apple iPhone 15 held in the hand.

Yes, the iPhone 15 adopts an improvement that Apple introduced to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max — a 48MP camera sensor that replaces the 12MP main camera that's been an iPhone stable for years. But who cares when an improvement arrives so long as it's there now?

With a 48MP main camera, iPhone 15 owners will be able to shot at full resolution for intensely detailed shots. But the iPhone 15 picks up a neat trick from the iPhone 15 Pro when you want to detailed photos at more reasonable file sizes — the sensors bins pixels together for 24MP shots that balance lighting and resolution.

We'll have to take the iPhone 15 out into the wild for some marathon shooting sessions to put this new camera to the test, but if it performs anything like the iPhone 14 Pro did, iPhone 15 owners are going to be pleased with the output.

2x optical zoom

iPhone 15 camera app interface

Look, Apple may never put a dedicated zoom lens on its standard iPhone — that's just a feature the phone maker's decided should be on Pro handsets only. But at least the iPhone 15 provides a reasonable alternative by tapping both hardware and software to support a 2x zoom capability.

Specifically, you're using the main camera to zoom in on subjects by pressing a handy 2x button in the Camera app interface. That gets the 48MP camera to crop in on your subject to produce a sharp 12MP photo without the blur and noise that's sometimes visible in digital zooms. When you shoot video, the zoom is smooth and continuous, too.

Improved computational photography

Portrait Mode on iPhone 15

Have you gotten a sense that the cameras on the iPhone 15 may be the new device's marquee feature? That's not just down to the hardware improvements — Apple's also upgraded a lot of imaging software, too, with the end result being better shots, especially when it comes to portraits.

You don't even have to be in Portrait mode to take one now — the iPhone's smart enough to detect when people, cats or dogs are in the shot. Software improvements also let you adjust the focal point after the portrait's taken.

Night mode sees improvements, too, with Apple promising sharper details and more vivid colors in the images you capture when the lights are down. And the Smart HDR feature has been updated, with improvements to skin tones, highlights and shadows. Naturally, we'll need to test out these promised improvements for ourselves, but given Apple's track record with photo processing, you'd imagine the results will be pretty good.

A brighter display

Apple iPhone 15 held in the hand.

We thought the iPhone 14's 6.1-inch screen was all right, but it certainly could have been brighter, considering that both the Galaxy S23 and Pixel 7 outshone it in our testing. Apple clearly doesn't want that to happen again because it's ramping up the peak HDR brightness to 1,600 nits.

Meanwhile, peak outdoor brightness on the iPhone 15's screen is now 2,000 nits — double what it was on the iPhone 14. We've only ever seen the iPhone 15 display under the flattering light of Apple's demo area, but we imagine we'll have no trouble making out details on the panel when the sun is out shining.

Hello, Dynamic Island. Goodbye, notch

iPhone 15 vs iPhone 14 comp image

We're not sure which excites us more — the arrival of the Dynamic Island cutout that Apple introduced to the iPhone 14 Pro models or the departure of the notch after six long years of obscuring part of the iPhone's screen.

We'll say its because the Dynamic Island is here, because that feature stoked some serious envy among iPhone 14 owners. Not only does Dynamic Island house the True Depth and Face ID sensors in a fairly unobtrusive way, it also serves as a home for notifications and live activities. Now it's easy to check baseball scores, monitor timers, check your flight gate and departure time or see when that Uber your ordered might arrive just by glancing at the top of your iPhone's screen.

No change in price

Despite all these improvements, you'll pay the same for the iPhone 15 as you did for the iPhone 14 — $799 in the U.S., which we'll note is $200 less than the least expensive of Apple's Pro models. With some of the iPhone 15 deals emerging, you might be able to save even more money between now and when the iPhone 15 goes on sale September 22.

iPhone 15: Reasons to skip

Where's the always-on display.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max's always-on display with no changes

If there's an iPhone 14 Pro feature we wish the iPhone 15 could have stolen, it's the always-on display that Apple added a year ago . If you've got one of the iPhone 14 Pro models — and now an iPhone 15 Pro — you can set up your phone's display to show a darkened version of your lock screen when your phone's asleep. That keeps widgets, the time and even your lock screen wallpaper visible without any intervention on your part.

I suspect the lack of an always on display feature for the iPhone 15 comes down to the fact that the Pro models have a MotionPro display with a dynamically adjusting refresh rate and devices like the iPhone 15 do not. Still, I wish Apple would have found some way to bring AOD to all of its new iPhones, especially in light of the StandBy Mode feature available in iOS 17 .

iOS 17 standby mode

StandBy turns your iPhone into a smart display when you're charging the device and have it propped up horizontally, whether on a charging stand or leaning against some books. This mode displays everything from the time to whatever widgets you want to a slideshow of your favorite photos.

StandBy works great on an iPhone with an always-on display — all four of them now that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are joining the iPhone 14 Pro models. But on other phones, there's a frustrating limitation . After a few seconds of inactivity, your iPhone screen goes dark, as your device falls asleep. Only tapping the display keeps StandBy mode going, which kind of defeats the purpose.

So essentially, if you buy an iPhone 15, you're not going to see the best of one of iOS 17's top additions.

Last year's silicon is back

A16 Bionic chipset render

I've already argued that Apple's decision to use different chipsets on different iPhone models in the same phone family is a terrible strategy , and I'm not going to repeat myself here other than to say that I continue to find this a counterproductive way to separate Pro phones from standard models.

Look, it's not as if the A16 Bionic inside the iPhone 15 isn't a top performing chipset. We've got the benchmarks from the iPhone 14 Pro to prove it. But the chipset's been out for a year, and the competition is catching up.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered devices already beat out the iPhone 14 Pro on graphics tests like 3DMark's Wild Life Unlimited. You'd imagine that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 being announced next month is only going to further close the performance gap with the A16, taking the shine off some of Apple's performance claims about the iPhone 15.

No charging speed improvement

Apple iPhone 15 held in the hand.

Apple's move to USB-C is probably the right long-term decision for the company and its iPhones, but some of the main benefits of that switch have yet to materialize.

If you want faster data transfer speeds, you need to pay up for an iPhone 15 Pro, as Apple reserves that capability for its pricey phones. And if you want the faster charging you've seen in phones that use USB-C, you'll likely need to wait for the iPhone 16 because there's no improvement here — the iPhone 15 charges at 20W just like a bunch of iPhones before it.

iPhone 15 outlook

We'll have more to say about the iPhone 15's strengths and weaknesses as we spend more time with this device. Stay tuned for our full review. But right now, the iPhone 15 has a lot of things going for it, particularly around its camera. And that could be enough to overshadow our few complaints about the device.

Don’t buy an iPhone 15, even after the iPhone 16 launch makes it cheaper

The iPhone 16 launch is approaching fast, and some people will be excited at the prospect of buying cheaper iPhones come September. As always, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 models will each be $100 cheaper. But I think you’d be better served not getting either model, especially an iPhone 15 flavor, whether the base model or the Plus.

I had no problem recommending the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus last year. They’re essentially beefed-up iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max variants. They’re great devices that can last for several years. At the time, however, I could not anticipate the Apple Intelligence revolution coming to the iPhone.

The iPhone 15 software will get upgraded to iOS 18 , sure. But if you want access to Apple’s AI features, including built-in ChatGPT support in Siri, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are not powerful enough for Apple Intelligence.

You might think you don’t need generative AI features in your life. You might not even use ChatGPT and other AI chatbots right now. But I’m certain you’ll eventually want some of the features Apple Intelligence has to offer.

The more advanced Siri experience is just one example of AI use on mobile that you might want to take advantage of. The iPhone 15 can’t run it, and the iPhone 14 won’t run Apple Intelligence either. So why am I so focused on the iPhone 15 models?

iPhone 15 Plus

Apple will discontinue the iPhone 13, which currently costs $599 ($629). The iPhone 14 will get that price point after a $100 discount from the current $699 ($729).

A $599 iPhone 14 is still a device that can’t run Apple Intelligence. It’ll never get it. But that price point is much better. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus could be great devices for specific categories of buyers. Older adults who can’t be bothered with AI right now could do well with an iPhone 14 or 14 Plus.

If you need a new iPhone but can’t justify spending at least $799, there is a much better alternative. Wait for the iPhone SE 4 , which should launch as soon as early next year. It’ll cost between $499 and $599, but it should feature iPhone 16-like components inside an iPhone 14 body.

The iPhone SE 4 will support Apple Intelligence for years to come, which is what makes the $699 iPhone 15 such a bad deal.

Finally, if you already own an iPhone 15 or 15 Plus and want Apple Intelligence, you should consider trading in your model for one of the four iPhone 16 variants. Another upgrade path might be one of last year’s Pros. But Apple will discontinue the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max once the iPhone 16 arrives. You’ll have to look at carriers and other electronics retailers for iPhone 15 Pro deals.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Marks a New Era

Apple iPhone 15 Pro

Every new iPhone in the past few years may have felt like an iterative upgrade—slightly better camera here, slightly better performance there. But Apple's new iPhone 15 lineup is getting a few once-in-a-decade changes that make them stand out in a sea of visually similar iPhones. The company announced the new iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max at its annual September event in Cupertino, California. From the addition of USB-C to the removal of the ill-famed notch, here are all the top features of the new iPhone .

Closeup of the new USBC charging port on the Apple iPhone 15

There's a new port on every new iPhone. After 11 years of the Lightning charging port, its time has come to an end. Replacing it is USB-C , the reversible charging port that's available on Apple MacBooks , iPads , Android phones , Windows laptops , and many more types of devices across various categories. Often dubbed as the “universal connector,” its primary benefit here is that you can finally use the same cable to recharge most of your devices.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro connected to Apple MacBook via USBC

The new port also adds the capability for faster data transfer. However, for the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, Apple is limiting the data transfer speeds to the current 480 megabits per second. Upgrade to the iPhone 15 Pro models and you're able to unlock up to 10 Gigabits per second thanks to USB 3 support. The company is including a braided and color-matching USB-C to USB-C cable in the box, though this cable is limited to the baseline 480 Mbps transfer speeds. If you want to unlock the full potential of the Pro models, you'll need to buy your own capable cable .

Unfortunately, while USB-C could have opened the door to faster charging, Apple did not announce any improvement in charging speeds. On the company’s spec page, the official charging speed is still limited to 20 watts.

Apple has been adding USB-C to many of its own devices since 2015, but it has been collecting licensing fees for the Lightning port, which may partly be why the iPhone has been the longest holdout. However, last year the European Union ruled that USB-C must be on all new phones, tablets, and cameras by the end of 2024, and so here we are.

Along with USB-C, all four new iPhone models now have the Dynamic Island, which was first introduced and restricted to last year's iPhone 14 Pro models . This is the pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display housing the TrueDepth selfie camera. Gone is the notorious notch that debuted on the iPhone X . But the Dynamic Island, as its name suggests, is adaptive, almost acting like a second screen. If you're waiting for an Uber ride, the driver's arrival time will show up in the Dynamic Island. You can also see passive information from alarms, timers, flight information, and live sports game scores without ever having to hop into an app itself.

The 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus retain the same size as their predecessors. They come in black, blue, green, yellow, and pink. Outside of the Dynamic Island and USB-C, these two models aren't too different.

Apple iPhone 15 smartphones in various colors arranged in a row

They still only have 60-Hz OLED screens when nearly every other phone at their price has smoother, more fluid 120-Hz refresh rate screens . They're powered by the A16 chipset, the very same that powered last year's iPhone 14 Pro models, and they're also stealing the 48-megapixel primary camera from the Pro, enabling them to capture more detail than ever before. The 12-megapixel ultrawide camera is largely the same. Apple, as usual, has announced improvements to its Photonic computational photography engine, so you should expect nicer photos overall, but time will tell.

Front and back of the Apple iPhone 15

Apple has saved many more of the upgrades for the Pro models to make them more worthy of the moniker. They are powered by the new A17 Pro chipset, which promises 10 percent faster performance cores, and a 2X faster neural engine.

Apple says the graphics processor unit is also the “biggest redesign in the history of Apple GPUs,” citing a 20 percent speed bump over its predecessor. Apple says this new GPU can create more detailed environments in mobile games while drawing less power, and it now has hardware-accelerated ray tracing , which is 4X faster. Because of all this, Apple says you can play console games like Resident Evil: Village on the iPhone 15 Pro, and games like the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage will have an iPhone version alongside console and PC versions. It'll be interesting to see how the fidelity of these AAA games matches up to their console counterparts.

Closeup of the titanium frame on the iPhone 15 Pro

Nice brushed finish.

You still get the 120-Hz ProMotion screen on the Pro, but Apple has refined the design to slim down the bezels around the display and, more importantly, added a titanium frame. Instead of stainless steel, the titanium 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max are now much lighter and more durable, which should make the latter easier to wield with one hand.

The big new camera change here is the addition of a periscope zoom camera exclusively for the iPhone 15 Pro Max model. This technology isn't new—Samsung famously has had a 10X optical zoom camera in its Galaxy Ultra phones for a few years, and last year's Google Pixel 7 Pro uses a 5X optical periscope zoom camera. Here, Apple says it enables 5X optical zoom, allowing you to capture subjects at a distance in high quality. The smaller iPhone 15 Pro is, sadly, still stuck at 3X zoom.

Closeup of a person's hand holding the iPhone 15 and displaying the new Action Button feature

Another exclusive for the Pro models is the Action Button. If this sounds familiar, it's the same name Apple gave to the extra customizable button on the Apple Watch Ultra , except on the iPhone, it's replacing the classic mute switch that has been on every iPhone since 2007. You can customize this button to trigger certain actions, like muting the phone, turning on the flashlight, or taking a photo with the camera open.

Apple placed an emphasis on sustainability throughout its September event and announced that it was moving away from leather cases and straps for its devices. It announced a new sustainable fabric material called FineWoven, and it declared that its going to be phasing out leather in favor of recycled and plant-based materials.

Apple FineWoven Cases on the iPhone 15 Pro smartphones

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus remain at the same price of $799 and $899, respectively. The iPhone 15 Pro stays at the same price of $999, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max is getting a price increase to $1,199, a $100 jump from their predecessors. However, you now get 256 GB of storage on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and this is the same price as the 256-GB iPhone 14 Pro Max. These phones will be up for preorder on Friday, September 15, and will officially launch on September 22. Stay tuned for our review soon.

Apple Sets iPhone 16 'Glowtime' Event for Sept. 9: What to Expect and How to Watch

The iPhone 16 is ready for primetime.

Apple has sent invitations for a "special event" that is likely to include the launch of its next-gen iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. It's scheduled for Monday, Sept. 9, at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino; things kick off at 10 a.m. PT.

That's a day later than initially expected, notes Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who had tipped a Sept. 10 event. Typically, Apple's events are held on Tuesdays. That was the case for the launch of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 13 , though the iPhone 14 switched things up with a Wednesday event, so Apple clearly likes to keep us guessing.

As for what to expect, the tagline on Apple's invite says "It's Glowtime" below a glowing, multi-colored logo. That could be a reference to the redesigned Siri , which takes over the edges of an iPhone's screen in iOS 18 with a similar color-changing effect. But with Apple, it could mean anything.

Apple will livestream the event on its website and Apple TV.

We scoured the web for the most reliable and up-to-date rumors to give you the best idea of what to expect at the iPhone 16 announcement. Here's what's likely to be on tap.

When Does the iPhone 16 Come Out?

With an event on Sept. 9, we'll probably see the iPhones launch the following week. Gurman tweeted that Apple "scheduled an unusual and mandatory meeting for employees at all Apple retail stores for the evening of Sept. 12 or morning of Sept. 13...ahead of the iPhone 16 release a week later." If Apple follows its typical pattern, preorders for the new devices will begin on Sept. 13, with an on-sale date a week later on Sept. 20.

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence was the star of the show at WWDC, but we've since heard that it won't launch with iOS 18 in September and will instead arrive as a software update in October with iOS 18.1 . Siri Apple Intelligence features aren't expected until 2025 .

When it does arrive, you'll need at least an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max . Presumably, it will work across the iPhone 16 lineup, but we'll need to wait for confirmation from Apple on that.

New A18 Chip to Power Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence will need a boost in processing power to run smoothly. Apple looks to power the entire iPhone 16 lineup with an A18 processor  and at least 8GB of RAM,  9to5Mac reports . In the current lineup, the non-Pro iPhone 15 models have 6GB of RAM while the two Pro models have 8GB.

The iPhone 15 series also uses different chips ; the A17 Pro for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and the A16 Bionic for the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. But according to back-end code found by NicolĂĄs Alvarez, all iPhone 16 models will have the same A-series chip, MacRumors reports . Since Apple has relied on different chips to differentiate between the Pro and non-Pro iPhones for the last few years, it will be interesting to see if it differentiates them in another way.

Better Cameras, Smaller Bump, Fun Colors, New Sizes

9to5Mac says the Ultra Wide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro will increase from 12MP to 48MP, while the iPhone 16 cameras will get a redesigned and rounded camera module in order to potentially accommodate the recording of spatial video. There's no word yet if Apple will improve the iPhone Pro's video capture powers beyond 4K60 to 8K. Competing Android devices have been able to capture 8K video for years.

We got a good look at the new camera bumps on the iPhone 16, as Apple leaker Sonny Dickson shared a picture that showcases the backs and colors of the iPhone 16.

The two lenses of the non-Pro iPhones are stacked vertically on a rounded camera bump, a significant departure from the diagonally opposed arrangement on the iPhone 15. Apple will offer the phone in white, black, blue, green, and pink. Dickson also posted a photo of the backs of the iPhone 16 Pro, which include a three-camera setup, along with white, black, and tan colorways. Some commenters have suggested the tan color may actually be bronze.

Finally, he showed the different sizes we can expect across the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro lineup.

According to Dickson, the display on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will remain the same at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively, but the screen on the iPhone 16 Pro is in for a jump. The phone will now feature a 6.3-inch display (matching the new Pixel 9 Pro ) instead of the 6.1-inch size found on the iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone 16 Pro Max will also get bigger, as it will have a 6.9-inch screen compared with the 6.7-inch display on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The larger size will put it on even footing with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra .

Action Button for All

Last year, Apple introduced the Action button exclusively on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. It replaced the mute button and can be programmed to activate many different actions, including the camera, the flashlight, or a shortcut.

MacRumors reports that this button will make its way to all iPhone 16 models. At some point, Apple might also give the button new features, such as force touch, which would allow it to detect pressure changes. There’s no indication that this particular feature will appear any time soon, though it does seem likely that the current version of the Action button will make an appearance on the iPhone 16 this year.

Dedicated Camera Button

9to5Mac also reports that the iPhone 16 could see an additional button on the right side of the phone dedicated to bringing up the camera app and taking pictures. The button could also come with some kind of touch sensitivity, which would allow users to zoom in and out by sliding their fingers up and down the button. Camera buttons used to be a staple across high-end phones but eventually disappeared.

Longer Battery Life

More battery life is always better, and a report by MacRumors suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro Max might be in line for an even larger battery. This could potentially give the device the longest-ever battery life on an iPhone, topping over 30 hours of usage.

Apple already claims up to 29 hours of battery life on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, though it managed only 20 hours and 15 minutes in PCMag's testing. There's no doubt the Apple A18 processor will play a role in determining how efficiently the new iPhones run.

Apple Watch X and Ultra 3

This year will be the tenth anniversary of the debut of the Apple Watch , and Apple was originally thought to be marking the occasion with a big redesign. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks that the watch could be thinner but offer larger sizes. Kuo also says the two models could be larger—from 41mm and 45mm, respectively, to 45mm and 49mm. A new color may be included in the lineup, too.

However, newer reports from Mark Gurman suggest design changes , if any, will be minimal. "This year’s third-generation Apple Watch Ultra will have roughly the same look as the original, and the other watch models still resemble the Series 4 launched in 2018,” he writes.

Other potential upgrades include a new chip with better performance and the potential for AI features, longer battery life thanks to an upgraded display, and, of course, all the new tools built into watchOS 11 .

AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3

Apple hasn't introduced significant redesigns to its in-ear AirPods for a few years. The AirPods 3 have been around since 2021. And though the AirPods Pro 2 gained a UBS-C connector last year, the headphones have otherwise remained unchanged since 2022.

Leaker Kosutami recently suggested that both the AirPods 4 and the AirPods Pro 3 will be announced soon. Details about what may be new, however, are rather thin. Gurman suggests that Apple may introduce two models of the AirPods 4, one without ANC to replace the aging AirPods 2 and another with ANC to sub in for the AirPods 3. Other enhancements would entail improved audio and battery life.

Waiting on a new set of over-ear cans from Apple? Your wait may continue. Reports of a successor to the 2020-era AirPods Max , Apple's $549, ANC-equipped headphones, are few and far between.

iPhone 17 and SE Rumors

The iPhone 16 has yet to be released, but that hasn’t stopped speculation about the iPhone 17. Some of these reports, according to MacRumors , include under-display Face ID technology for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. This would remove the front camera cutout altogether in favor of a small, circular cutout for the camera.

We could also see even larger display sizes, plus the 120Hz ProMotion screen might trickle down to all the phones in the iPhone 17 lineup. There’s also talk of an entirely new model called the iPhone Slim , which would be thinner and only have one rear camera.

The iPhone 17 lineup could also be getting an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip, which could potentially better integrate with Apple’s existing hardware and software to get even faster Wi-Fi speeds.

Additionally, Gurman predicts that we'll see the first iPhone SE since 2022. This new version could look similar to an iPhone 14 but with an OLED display and even smaller bezels. It will also most likely have access to Apple Intelligence.

Apple officially announces iphone 16 event for september 9: ‘it’s glowtime’.

Avatar for Chance Miller

Apple has officially announced its highly-anticipated iPhone 16 event for September 9. The event, which includes an in-person component at Apple Park, will take place on September 9 at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. The Apple event invite teases: “It’s Glowtime.”

Here’s everything you need to know about next month’s Apple event, including expectations for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro .

Apple event details

Apple’s iPhone 16 event will take place at 10 a.m. PT on Monday, September 9. Here’s how that translates to other major time zones around the world:

  • Pacific Time (PT) : 10 a.m.
  • Eastern Time (ET) : 1 p.m.
  • Central Time (CT) : 12 p.m. (Noon)
  • Mountain Time (MT) : 11 a.m.
  • British Summer Time (BST) : 6 p.m.
  • Central European Time (CET) : 7 p.m.
  • India Standard Time (IST) : 10:30 p.m.
  • China Standard Time (CST) : 1 a.m. (next day)

  • Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) : 3 a.m. (next day)
  • New Zealand Standard Time (NZST) : 5 a.m. (next day)

The format is expected to be the same as the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 events , which combined an in-person experience for the press with a virtual experience for everyone else. At this event, Apple will offer the press hands-on time with the new iPhone 16 and Apple Watch Series 10 hardware.

But while these are our current expectations, Apple could have a surprise in store for this year. We won’t know the full details of the event until it takes place next month.

Regardless of the format, the entire iPhone 16 event will be live streamed by Apple. You’ll be able to tune in via Apple’s website , the TV app on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, and via Apple’s official YouTube channel .

What to expect at Apple’s iPhone 16 event

iphone 15 tour

The headlining announcement at the event will of course be the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. As a refresher, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to feature the following updates:

  • A18 chip with 8GB for Apple Intelligence support
  • Action button
  • Capture button for controlling the Camera app
  • Smaller, vertically aligned camera bump for spatial video recording
  • New colors: blue, green, pink, white, and black

Meanwhile, here are a few changes to expect from the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max:

  • A18 Pro chip
  • Larger displays: 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, respectively
  • New colors: Black Titanium, Natural Titanium, White Titanium, and Bronze Titanium
  • 5x camera on the iPhone 16 Pro

We’re also expecting Apple to announce the Apple Watch Series 10 , which will apparently come in larger 45mm and 49mm sizes. Other features rumored for the Apple Watch Series 10 include a thinner case design, improved performance, and new health sensors and features. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 will also likely be announced with improved performance.

In addition to the hardware, Apple will also announce release dates for its next round of software updates during the event. This includes iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, visionOS 2, and macOS Sequoia.

Apple reportedly announcing iPhone 16 lineup and more on September 10

iphone 15 tour

Apple will be unveiling new products on September 10, with the announced phones going on sale on September 20, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman .

That lineup will reportedly include the iPhone 16, with larger screens on the Pro models and a new button just for taking pictures. The phones should also support Apple Intelligence , the company’s suite of AI features announced earlier this year.

The event could also include announcements of the Apple Watch Series 10, which will be thinner than past models, with a larger screen, as well as new AirPods, with noise cancellation coming to more models.

While invites for the September 10 event have not yet gone out, the timing would be consistent with Apple’s press events in recent years.

Gurman also reported that Apple is planning to update its Macs with the M4 processors, but the new Macs probably won’t be announced until later in the fall.

Apple’s iPhone 16 launch event is set for September

Apple has announced the date of its next big event: September 9th, 2024, at 1PM ET / 10AM PT. The event, which has the tagline “It’s Glowtime,” will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park.

During the show, the company is expected to launch the iPhone 16 lineup. The big change to the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus is expected to be a switch to a vertically aligned camera system on the back. (If the final phones look like what we’ve seen on iPhone 16 dummy units , I’m already a big fan of this change.) The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max phones might get bigger screens but are rumored to keep Apple’s familiar three-camera layout. Those phones could also come in a new bronze color .

Picture of a glowing Apple logo with the words: It’s Glowtime.

All four iPhone 16 models are expected to have the Action Button, which was exclusive to the Pro line with the iPhone 15. Apple’s new iPhones may also have a new button dedicated to capturing photos and videos, but it’s unclear if that will be a Pro-exclusive feature or will be available on the regular iPhone 16 models as well.

AI and the company’s Apple Intelligence features will likely be a big part of Apple’s event, too. Right now, the only iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence are the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, but the full iPhone 16 lineup is rumored to be able to use Apple Intelligence. (Well, when Apple Intelligence is actually available , that is.)

Apple is also rumored to launch the Apple Watch Series 10 and two versions of new AirPods at the event.
