Head coach Faz  confirmed a squad of 19 forwards and 16 backs with Peter O'Mahony to captain the side.

There was a double blow for the boss as Leinster duo of Jamison Gibson-Park and Jack Conan being ruled out due to injury and personal issues.

The first Test is scheduled for Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday, July 6, with the second Test a week later at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban as Ireland make their first trip to South Africa in eight years.

Emerging ireland set to tour south africa in october.

The IRFU has officially announced that an Emerging Ireland squad will travel to South Africa this autumn to participate in a three-match series against Currie Cup and Super Rugby opposition. The tour aims to provide high-potential players with an opportunity to connect with the National Coaching Team and perform under the intensity of the National Team environment.

According to the official announcement from IRFU, “Following the success of the 2022 Emerging Ireland Tour, Ireland Defence Coach Simon Easterby will once again lead the squad to South Africa, assisted by Ireland Forwards Coach Paul O’Connell, Ireland Scrum Coach John Fogarty and incoming Ireland Backs Coach Andrew Goodman.”

The Emerging Ireland squad will assemble at the IRFU High Performance Centre on September 25 before departing for Bloemfontein three days later. The tour will kick off with a match against the Pumas on Wednesday, October 2, followed by a clash with Super Rugby outfit Western Force on Sunday, October 6. The campaign will conclude with a game against defending Currie Cup champions, the Cheetahs, on Wednesday, October 9. All matches will be played at Toyota Stadium.

The official announcement emphasized the tour’s importance, stating that “The Tour schedule is designed to challenge the players in a National Team environment, providing them with a window to impress the coaches and train and play to the National Team’s tactical and technical approach.”

The success of the 2022 Emerging Ireland Tour was highlighted, with players such as Jack Crowley, Calvin Nash, and Joe McCarthy making a significant impression and subsequently becoming part of Andy Farrell’s Men’s Guinness Six Nations-winning squad earlier this season.

Ireland Head Coach Andy Farrell expressed his delight at the confirmation of the second Emerging Ireland Tour to South Africa, saying, “This short three-match window will once again provide an opportunity for players within the system to come into a National Team environment, work with the National Team coaches and access meaningful game time in a green jersey.”

Farrell also emphasized the importance of broadening the selection pool and ensuring that young players are given opportunities to further develop and gain an understanding of what is required to perform for Ireland at the highest level, particularly ahead of the busy four-match Autumn Nations Series in November.

Emerging Ireland Head Coach Simon Easterby acknowledged the value of the 2022 Tour, highlighting the cohort of players who have since been capped at the Test level for Ireland. He also noted the challenge of the short preparation window leading into three tough matches but emphasized that it is part of the overall experience for the group, focusing on building connections and meeting the demands of playing in a green jersey.

Kick-off times and broadcast details will be confirmed in due course, and the Emerging Ireland squad for the tour will be announced in September.

Ireland back as World number one after shock Springboks defeat

South Africa’s 11-month reign as the world’s top-ranked rugby nation came to an abrupt end following their dramatic 29-28 defeat to Argentina in Santiago Del Estero on Saturday. The loss not only dented the Springboks’ Rugby Championship aspirations but also saw them relinquish their coveted number-one spot in the World Rugby Rankings to Ireland, who reclaim the position without playing a match.

The Springboks had held the top position since mid-October 2023 when they replaced Ireland following the latter’s quarter-final exit at the Rugby World Cup. However, the tables have now turned, with Ireland benefiting from South Africa’s unexpected stumble.

Ireland will sit atop with 92.12 points, while South Africa will drop to second place with 91.77 points, a mere 0.35 points behind when the latest World Rugby Rankings are released by World Rugby.

The loss to Argentina was particularly painful for the Springboks, as they had led 17-0 within the first 12 minutes of the match. However, a yellow card to Kurt-Lee Arendse proved pivotal, allowing Los Pumas to mount a stunning comeback. The match culminated in a nail-biting finish, with Springbok replacement fly-half Manie Libbok missing a relatively straightforward penalty kick in the 79th minute that would have secured both the victory and the Rugby Championship title.

For Argentina, the victory was not just about spoiling South Africa’s party. In ending their nine-game losing streak against the Springboks, Los Pumas will climb to sixth in the world rankings, leapfrogging Scotland. This remarkable achievement adds to their impressive Rugby Championship campaign, which has already seen them defeat New Zealand in Wellington and thrash Australia 67-27 .

The upcoming Springboks rematch with Argentina in Nelspruit now carries even greater significance. Not only is the Rugby Championship title on the line, but a convincing win could potentially see South Africa return to the top of the world rankings. Conversely, another loss could see them drop further down the rankings, with New Zealand sitting close behind in third place.

World Rugby makes landmark decision in appointing new Director of High Performance

World Rugby makes landmark decision in appointing new Director of High Performance

In a significant move for global rugby, World Rugby has announced the appointment of Nicky Ponsford as their new Director of High Performance . This decision marks a historic moment for the sport, as Ponsford becomes the first woman to hold such a position at the international federation on a permanent basis.

Ponsford joined World Rugby in 2021 as Women’s High Performance Manager, bringing with her a wealth of experience from her previous role at the Rugby Football Union (RFU). Since her arrival, she has been instrumental in reshaping the sport’s global high-performance structures and creating a targeted approach to performance gains.

Her achievements include resetting the approach for targeted unions to prepare for major events like Women’s Rugby World Cup 2021 and WXV, contributing significantly to reshaping the global calendar, initiating new coach education programmes, and deploying specialist performance consultants to raise global standards.

In her recent work as interim Director of High Performance, Ponsford combined her role across the women’s game with a broader remit. This included leading efforts to understand the needs and opportunities of unions preparing for the new men’s Nations Cup from 2026, working on a remodelled Men’s Rugby World Cup qualification model, and engaging in discussions around future women’s competition models.

Ponsford will be at the forefront of several key initiatives to raise the standard of rugby globally in her expanded role. These include the implementation of a two-division Nations Cup from 2026, a reimagined Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup, a new Men’s Rugby World Cup qualification model, and a review of global women’s competition models. These initiatives align with World Rugby’s core objective of raising standards for expanded men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups.

World Rugby Chief Executive Alan Gilpin expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment: “We are delighted to confirm Nicky Ponsford as Director of High Performance following a global process. One of the most successful and widely respected high-performance managers in the global game, Nicky will continue to bring her considerable experience and energy to a role that is pivotal in supporting our mission to grow the global game, broadening its appeal to more people in more nations.”

Nigel Cass, World Rugby Director of Competitions and Performance, further elaborated on Ponsford’s impact: “Nicky has made a huge impression across the game, playing a leading role in both redefining the women’s competition landscape, and reforming the way we partner with and support our unions to achieve their high-performance goals.”

Ponsford herself expressed her excitement about the new role: “This is an era-defining time for a sport with a clear growth mandate over the next decade and I am excited about working across the business, and more broadly with unions and regions to provide targeted solutions that sustainably support increases in competitiveness within a calendar that includes new competition models and expanded men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups and beyond.”

Does the reported ‘Greatest Rugby Rivalry’ tour signal the end of The Rugby Championship?

Does the reported ‘Greatest Rugby Rivalry’ tour signal the end of The Rugby Championship?

According to reports from the Daily Maverick and Daily Telegraph , South Africa and New Zealand have reached formal agreements to resume full tours between the Springboks and All Blacks, with the series being marketed as “The Greatest Rugby Rivalry”. The first tour under this new agreement will take place in South Africa in 2026, marking the 30th anniversary of the All Blacks’ last full tour to the Republic in 1996.

The tour will consist of eight matches, including three Tests, four contests against United Rugby Championship (URC) clubs – the Bulls, the Lions, the Sharks and the Stormers – and one match against SA “A”. There will also be a fourth Test between the Springboks and the All Blacks, likely to take place at Twickenham or in North America, but this will not be part of the official series.

The Boks will reciprocate with a similar eight-match tour to New Zealand in 2030. The income from these tours, in terms of commercial value and broadcasting rights, will be shared evenly, although the home union will take a larger share of the ticket and match-day revenue. While this development is expected to create massive interest in the game, it also raises concerns about the impact on the Rugby Championship.

SARU chief executive Rian Oberholzer has suggested that if a single-round Rugby Championship does not happen, South Africa will play one-off Test matches against Argentina and Australia. “The Rugby Championship will still happen, but it will probably be a single round, which we are pushing for,” Oberholzer said. “If it is not going to happen, we as Saru did say to Argentina and Australia that we will play one-off Test matches against them. That is a discussion that we need finally in the second week of September.”

The decision to prioritise these tours comes at a time when rugby is facing funding challenges, and the unions involved believe they need to create their own opportunities. The move also highlights the fierce rivalry between the Springboks and All Blacks, who have combined to win seven Rugby World Cups and have held the official No. 1 ranking for 985 out of 1095 weeks since rankings were introduced.

However, the lack of exposure to South African opposition at the club level has left the All Blacks short-changed when facing the Springboks away from home. Since South Africa’s departure from Super Rugby, New Zealand players have had fewer opportunities to face the physical, forward-oriented style of play that characterises South African rugby.

All Blacks loose forward Ethan Blackadder acknowledged this, saying, “Generally, everyone misses the South African games and the tours. It is a bit gutting that it hasn’t continued. But when we do get the opportunity like this, which is rare, you’re testing yourself against the world champs, a team that plays physical rugby. [It’s] gutting that it’s not regular, but exciting that we can do it.”

In conclusion, while the resumption of full tours between South Africa and New Zealand is an exciting prospect for rugby fans, it also presents challenges for the Rugby Championship and highlights the need for a long-term strategy to grow the game in the face of funding difficulties. The “Greatest Rugby Rivalry” may mark a new chapter in the storied history of Springboks vs All Blacks clashes, but its impact on the wider rugby landscape remains to be seen.

An Emerging Ireland squad will travel to South Africa this Autumn to play three matches against Currie Cup and Super Rugby opposition, providing high potential players with an opportunity to connect with the National Coaching Team and perform under the intensity of the National Team environment.

Following the success of the 2022 Emerging Ireland Tour, Ireland Defence Coach Simon Easterby will once again lead the squad to South Africa, assisted by Ireland Forwards Coach Paul O’Connell , Ireland Scrum Coach John Fogarty and incoming Ireland Backs Coach Andrew Goodman .

The squad will assemble at the IRFU High Performance Centre on 25 September, before departing for Bloemfontein three days later.

Emerging Ireland will face the Pumas in the campaign opener on Wednesday, 2 October, before going head-to-head with Super Rugby outfit Western Force on Sunday, 6 October.

Easterby’s side will then conclude the Tour against defending Currie Cup champions the Cheetahs on Wednesday, 9 October, with all matches being played at Toyota Stadium.

The Tour schedule is designed to challenge the players in a National Team environment, providing them with a window to impress the coaches and train and play to the National Team’s tactical and technical approach.

Two years ago, Jack Crowley , Calvin Nash and Joe McCarthy were among those who made a significant impression for Emerging Ireland as they claimed the Toyota Challenge title courtesy of wins over the Windhoek Draught Griquas, the Pumas and the Cheetahs, with all three part of Andy Farrell ‘s Men’s Guinness Six Nations -winning squad earlier this season.

On today’s announcement, the Ireland Head Coach said: “We are delighted to confirm details of a second Emerging Ireland Tour to South Africa later this year, the value of which cannot be understated. This short three-match window will once again provide an opportunity for players within the system to come into a National Team environment, work with the National Team coaches and access meaningful game time in a green jersey.

“Ahead of a busy four-match Autumn Nations Series in November, it is important we continue to broaden our selection pool and ensure young players are given every opportunity to further develop and gain an understanding of what is required to perform for Ireland at the highest level.”

Emerging Ireland Head Coach, Simon Easterby, added: “The 2022 Tour was of huge value, as evidenced by the cohort of players who have come through and been capped at Test level for Ireland since. It will be a short preparation window leading into three tough matches but that is part of the challenge for the whole group, building connections and getting up to speed to meet the demands of playing in a green jersey.”

Kick off times and broadcast details will be confirmed in due course, while the Emerging Ireland squad for South Africa will be announced in September.

Fans highlight glaring problem as details of Ireland’s 2024 tour of South Africa unveiled

Further details regarding Ireland’s tour of Rugby World Cup winners South Africa in the summer of 2024 have been confirmed, but some Irish rugby fans are not pleased.

Ireland will play two Tests against the Rassie Erasmus’ Springboks in South Africa next summer.

Andy Farrell’s squad face South Africa in Pretoria on July 6 and then in Durban a week later, the South African Rugby Union has announced.

It will be Ireland’s first trip to South Africa since 2016, when they lost a three-Test series 2-1 after winning the opening encounter in Cape Town.

Since that series, Ireland have beaten the Springboks on three-successive occasions – twice in Dublin and then during the recent Rugby World Cup pool stage in Paris.

However, some supporters have taken issue with the fact it will be a two-Test series between the nations, meaning it could eventually end in a 1-1 draw.

‘Tour to SA is great news but what in the world is the point of a 2 test series,’ one rugby fan wrote on social media platform X.

Another said: ‘So much for the 3 match series,’ while ‘Only two?!’ was the reaction of another perplexed fan.

‘Just as well it’ll be 2-0 to SA then,’ was the cheeky quip of another rugby supporter.

It is worth noting that Ireland would have not secured their famous Test series win in New Zealand in 2022 had there not been a third and deciding fixture, so fans have a right to feel short-changed.

South Africa will tackle Portugal for the first time on July 20 next year, in a slot where a third Test could have been slated.

Emerging Ireland tour to South Africa confirmed for October

THE IRFU HAS confirmed that Emerging Ireland will tour South Africa again next season, with three games confirmed for early October.

Simon Easterby will be head coach of the young Irish squad again, as was the case for the 2022 tour to South Africa, and they will play against South Africa’s Pumas and Cheetahs, as well as Australia’s Western Force.

All three matches will take place at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, the Cheetahs’ home venue.

With current senior Ireland head coach Andy Farrell stepping back from his duties in 2025 to take on the Lions head coach role, Easterby is the favourite to step up as Ireland boss on a temporary basis for that spell.

Easterby will be joined on this year’s Emerging Ireland tour by fellow senior assistant coaches Paul O’Connell, John Fogarty, and Andrew Goodman – who links up with the senior set-up as attack coach from this summer.

The Emerging Ireland squad will be named in September, with the group gathering in Dublin on 25 September before flying to South Africa three days later.

The 2022 tour was deemed a success by the IRFU as several talented young Irish players impressed, with Jack Crowley and Joe McCarthy becoming senior internationals soon after, while Calvin Nash has joined them this season.

As with the 2022 tour, next season’s South Africa trip will clash directly with the URC – something that caused major friction with the four provinces at that time. Players who travel with Emerging Ireland next season look set to be unavailable for at least three rounds of the league.

“The 2022 Tour was of huge value, as evidenced by the cohort of players who have come through and been capped at Test level for Ireland since,” said Easterby of today’s announcement.

“It will be a short preparation window leading into three tough matches but that is part of the challenge for the whole group, building connections and getting up to speed to meet the demands of playing in a green jersey.”

Senior Ireland head coach Farrell, who did not travel on the 2022 tour, also welcomed confirmation of next season’s trip to South Africa.

“We are delighted to confirm details of a second Emerging Ireland Tour to South Africa later this year, the value of which cannot be understated,” said Farrell.

“This short three-match window will once again provide an opportunity for players within the system to come into a national team environment, work with the national team coaches and access meaningful game time in a green jersey.

“Ahead of a busy four-match Autumn Nations Series in November, it is important we continue to broaden our selection pool and ensure young players are given every opportunity to further develop and gain an understanding of what is required to perform for Ireland at the highest level.”

The IRFU says kick-off times and broadcast details for the Emerging Ireland tour will be confirmed in due course.

Villiers School Team Tour to Salou - 2022

Just a quick note to say how brilliant the trip to New Zealand was. Everything went very well and we had a ball. The series win was fantastic and we celebrated as only the Irish can. Our fellow supporters and the leaders gelled together and, given how up in the air everything was over the past few months, the tour really was a triumph. Here’s to the next trip.

Linda & Lar, Dublin. NZ Summer Tour 2022

Valerie & Bobby, Portadown. NZ Summer Tour 2022

Ann, Cork. France v Ireland, Paris 2022

I just wanted to record my grateful thanks for a wonderful trip which went well beyond my expectations with regard to the service delivered. Everything that was within your control, and a few things that weren't, turned up trumps. Airport check-in, aircraft seating, transfers, hotel check-in arrangements, pre-match lunch, weather etc, were perfectly organised and executed.

Aidan, Dublin. France v Ireland, Paris 2022

I thought the trip was very well organised. I took my 14-year-old son on his first away trip, and he loved every minute. We never considered the ticket seat location in the stadium, that was an unbelievable surprise for him when he noticed we were in around the half way line. Very happy young man after his week. Thanks to all involved.

Anthony, Limerick. Toulouse v Munster, January 2023

Thank you for a wonderful rugby trip. From our first communication, Patrick and I felt so welcome and very much cared for. Thank you also for your generous hospitality in treating us to a real feast in Japan.

Anna Wasabi Tour - RWC 2019

We had a brilliant time. The whole tour was very well organised and it was great to see so much in a relatively short period of time. A first class tour! Thank you all very much.

Rickelton, Hendricks smash quick fifties to set up comfortable win for South Africa

ireland tour of south africa 2024

South Africa 174 for 2 (Rickelton 76, Hendricks 51) beat Ireland 171 for 8 (Campher 49, Rock 37, Kruger 4-27) by eight wickets

South Africa completed the highest successful chase in Abu Dhabi and notched up a win in the first T20I to keep their unbeaten record against Ireland intact.

It was officially a home fixture for Ireland but was played at the Zayed Cricket Stadium to solve cost and infrastructure challenges in Ireland. Ironically, South Africa seemed to be more familiar with conditions. After spending last week playing Afghanistan on dry, slow pitches in Sharjah, South Africa had adapted to the demands of the heat, and unlike in Sharjah, where the bounce was low, there was good bounce and carry in Abu Dhabi. Full, slower balls proved to be best wicket-taking options and South Africa understood that while Ireland struggled with dew and moisture in the field.

South Africa's strikes in the powerplay and at the end of Ireland's innings meant that although Ireland scored their second-highest T20I total against them, they did not have enough. Ireland were pegged back after almost every acceleration but a fourth-wicket stand of 59 runs off 41 balls between Curtis Campher and Neil Rock anchored the innings.

In reply, Reeza Hendricks and Ryan Rickelton shared in South Africa's third-highest opening stand, and highest away from home, in T20Is and reached important milestones of their own. Hendricks scored his first fifty in 15 T20I innings and Rickelton registered a career-best 76, which was also his first international half-century. They complemented each other well, with Rickelton hitting high and hard over the leg side and Hendricks playing the classy off-side shots he has become known for. Neither stayed to the end, but South Africa got there with 14 balls to spare.

Push and pull in the powerplay

Ross Adair, not due to play this game until Lorcan Tucker was injured in training, made the first statement of intent when he hit a Lizaad Williams short ball over mid-on for the first boundary of the innings. He went on to take another 10 runs off Williams' first over on the tour, after he missed out on the ODIs against Afghanistan, and hit Wiaan Mulder over his head for four before South Africa struck back. With Ross Adair's strength down the ground, Aiden Markram placed Tristan Stubbs on the long-on boundary and he was in a good position to take the catch that dismissed the batter, who tried one big shot too many. Then it was the turn of another overlooked player from the Afghanistan matches, Ottneil Baartman, who struck with his third ball when he bowled Paul Stirling with a delivery that angled in and sailed through the bat-pad gap. But South Africa could not claim the early advantage.

Campher, playing in his 100th international for Ireland, took five balls to get his eye in and then drove Baartman through mid-off and for two more fours to get his run-scoring underway. At the end of powerplay, Ireland finished on 63 for 2, their second-best against South Africa, after scoring 67 for 2 in Bristol in 2022.

Peter's timely breakthrough

In his third T20I, legspinner Nqabayomzi Peter had to wait until the 11th over to be called on and it was a fairly tough introduction. Campher and Neil Rock were settled, South Africa were rattled after they dropped Campher on 17 at the end of the ninth over and then misfielded to allow four at the end of the 10th. Rock hit Peter for four in an over that cost eight and he was replaced by Bjorn Fortuin and allowed to change ends. And then he struck. Peter bowled Rock with a delivery that straightened as he tried to sweep and ended a partnership that was threatening to take the game away. That wicket would prove crucial in the target Ireland ended up setting South Africa.

Death-bowling heroics from Williams and Kruger

At 163 for 5 after 18 overs, Ireland would have been eyeing a total over 180 but an excellent last couple of overs from South Africa's seamers kept them to 171. Williams bowled the 19th over and, with a wide slip in place, stuck to a selection of wide yorkers. All Ireland managed were singles off every ball in that over. Then it was over to Patrick Kruger , who took pace off with immediate success. Dockrell played a swipe too early and was caught behind. Off the next ball, Fionn Hand tried to ramp Kruger but could only get the ball as far as short fine leg. Kruger's hat-trick ball missed everything and cost a bye. His penultimate delivery brought another wicket as Mark Adair tried to hit him over the off side and was caught by Wiaan Mulder. Kruger finished with a triple-wicket maiden and South Africa only conceded eight runs in the last two overs.

Hendricks, Rickelton redeem themselves and South Africa's batting

The big picture of South Africa's batting woes against Afghanistan aside, the opening batters had questions over their form going into this game. Hendricks had only gone past 30 in three of his last 12 T20Is while Rickelton had a top score of 27 from eight white-ball internationals. Were they the best combination sans Quinton de Kock? Yes, they said, as they grabbed the chase by the scruff of the neck in the powerplay. Rickelton got the ball rolling with back-to-back boundaries off Mark Adair and showed his ability against the short and full balls. Hendricks only faced four balls in the first three overs but when given more of the strike, he made the most of it. He smashes four fours in six deliveries, to bring up 2000 runs in T20I cricket. Rickelton finished off the powerplay hitting Hand for two enormous sixes and South Africa were 58 for 0 in the powerplay. Two overs later, Rickelton reached his fifty off 30 deliveries. South Africa were 97 without loss at the halfway stage and the horse had bolted.

Ireland vs South Africa 1st T20I Live Score: South Africa captain Aiden Markam won the toss and opted to bowl first against Ireland in the series opener at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday. The two teams are squaring off in a two-match T20I series while will be followed by three ODIs.

Ireland captain Paul Stirling revealed that the players underwent sauna sessions to get used to the heat in Abu Dhabi,

“We’ve had a number of sessions in the sauna and steam room to try and adjust to it before we came out here, but nothing is quite like getting here in person. You do naturally get used to it,” he said prior to the start of the series.

Aiden Markram, the skipper of South Africa is in for a chat.

Paul Stirling, the captain of Ireland is in for a chat.

Ryan Rickelton wins the Player of the Match award for his stunning knock of 76 runs.

Stay tuned for the presentation…

Earlier in the innings, Ireland got off to a quick start, thanks to Ross Adair, but they kept losing wicket at regular intervals once he slipped out, which kept breaking their flow. Curtis Campher’s 49 gave them some boost, but the same story repeated in the death, when the wickets kept tumbling. Patrick Kruger stood out with the ball earlier with his four wicket haul.

Ireland, desperate for a breakthrough, found hope when Craig Young delivered a top ball to dismiss Hendricks. Soon after, Mark Adair struck, sending the well-set Rickelton back to the pavilion, giving Irish fans a glimmer of hope with both openers gone in quick succession. However, any chance of a comeback was swiftly extinguished as Aiden Markram and Matthew Breetzke comfortably guided their side home with 14 balls to spare. The dew proved to be a major setback for Ireland’s defense, making it difficult to contain the chase.

South Africa were off to a flier. Ryan Rickelton and Reeza Hendricks set the tone early, launching an aggressive assault during the Powerplay that left Ireland on the back foot. Rickelton, the primary aggressor, recorded a brilliant half-century, while Hendricks provided steady support. By the halfway mark, the pair had taken their team to a commanding 97 for no loss, with Rickelton on 56 and Hendricks on 34, making it a one-sided affair in the first half of the chase.

What a game! What a finish. South Africa win the game by 8 wickets. That is a dominant victory and they take a 1-0 lead in this two-match series. A tough day at the office for Ireland. They will try to make amends in the final encounter.

17.4 – FOUR! Breetzke hits the winning runs! Low full toss, around off. Breetzke times it through the extra cover and mid-off region, finds the boundary, and South Africa are home by 8 wickets with more than two overs to spare.
