A Bit Of History

This idyllic, tiny island has been held in high esteem and cherished for centuries. Revered by the Maya as a holy place, it continues to be celebrated by locals and tourists alike. The history of the island dates back 1500 years when it was the sanctuary for the Mayan goddess Ixchel, known as the goddess of the moon, happiness, medicine and fertility. A temple to honor Ixchel was known to exist on the southern tip of the island and doubled as a lighthouse for those who would come to worship or harvest salt. The island remained a Mayan sanctuary until it was “discovered” by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1517.

Isla Mujeres Today

Isla Mujeres Today

These days, Isla Mujeres is celebrated as a different kind of sanctuary. One that provides a calm serenity from the intensity and party culture of its neighbor across the bay,  Cancun . The tranquil environment, charming people, gorgeous beaches and of course, delectable food are a warm welcome for all who visit. Although most visitors only come for a day, there are more than enough activities to keep people of all ages entertained for several days.

Is Isla Mujeres Safe?

Is Isla Mujeres Safe?

Isla Mujeres is widely known as one of Mexico’s friendliest places and is considered very safe. The island itself is very small, making it very hard for significant crime to occur.

Additionally, there is a decent-sized Navy base on the island, keeping things peaceful and calm. Any crime that does happen on the island is typically done by chance, so be sure to keep an eye on your belongings and use common sense.

Where is Isla Mujeres?

Isla Mujeres On A Map

Isla Mujeres  is a small island just off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, directly across the water from Cancun . Located on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (the second-longest coral reef system in the world), Isla Mujeres is in a perfect spot for turquoise Caribbean waters, white sand beaches, and world-class diving and snorkeling. This is DEFINITELY the island life!

The Best Time to Visit Isla Mujeres

Looking for the best time to go to Isla Mujeres? The tropical climate in Isla Mujeres is quite predictable and easy to make plans around. Without much of a temperature difference throughout the year (the average temperature lingers around 83 degrees F), it’s the rainy hurricane season that most travelers need to pay attention to.

January – April

Perfect weather-wise, but sees the highest influx of tourists. If you are not a people person, consider this.

May – October

The hottest and most rainy months of the year but still plenty of sunshine and fantastic warm water for snorkeling & diving. Also, the hurricane season peaks in September and October so keep an eye on the forecasts and definitely get travel insurance just in case. Fewer tourists mean you can typically expect lower rates at hotels, resorts and tour companies during this time.

November – December

The autumn-winter months are considered by many to be the best times to visit Isla Mujeres. The hurricane season has passed by this time and the humidity is low. Can be a little “chilly” in the evenings.

When Is Isla Mujeres Hurricane Season?

Isla Mujeres hurricane season begins in late May and lasts until early November, with the peak occurring between August and October. The odds of a hurricane hitting Isla Mujeres are low (less than half a dozen hurricanes have hit the Yucatan in the past 40 years), but hurricanes traveling near Isla Mujeres can still cause inclement and severe weather. Be sure to check weather reports ahead of time and we always suggest getting travel insurance during these months just in case.

How to Get to Isla Mujeres & Around

There are a couple of ways to get to Isla Mujeres and around the island. Note that some larger hotels in Isla Mujeres may provide free transportation to your hotel, so check ahead.

Yucatan Ferry: Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Holbox

Arrival By Ferry

The Ultra Mar ferry offers 3 places to disembark in order to get to Isla Mujeres, including Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas, and Playa Caracol.  We recommend Puerto Juarez. From Cancun, take a short taxi ride or a bus to the Puerto Juarez ferry terminal, where you can buy your tickets at the Gran Puerto Cancun (Ultra Mar) ferry dock. You can buy a one-way ticket for around $16 or a round-trip ticket for about $32. The boat leaves Puerto Juarez every half an hour from 5:30 am until 6:00 pm (they skip the 2:30 run, so there is an hour gap from 2 to 3 pm) and then every hour after that until 11 pm.

Isla Mujeres Catamaran

Arrival By Catamaran Day Cruise

Throughout Cancun & Playa del Carmen you can book a day trip to Isla Mujeres. These fun boats take you out on beautiful catamarans for a whole day of snorkeling and cruising. Full-day trips typically include all-day rum punch and buffet lunch on Isla Mujeres. Bring Sunblock! While you will have a limited time to explore the island, if you only have one day to visit Isla Mujeres this can be a fun adventure.

Book a highly rated catamaran tour here.

If you feel like upgrading, book a more luxury private catamaran tour here .

Isla Mujeres Golf Cart

Rent A Golf Cart

Golf Carts are a hugely popular way to get around the island and can be rented in town on Rueda Medina when you disembark from the ferry. The price will be between $50-$65 for a day. Make sure the cart is in good working shape when you rent it and we suggest taking a quick video of it before setting out, especially of any dings or dents already present. Prices are regulated and the same everywhere so look for the best quality and service.

Taxi in Mexico

Taxis On The Island

Taxis are plentiful on the island and can easily be flagged down or called by your hotel. Be sure to discuss the prices in advance of taking the ride so you don’t get overcharged. This is an easy way to explore the island.

Isla Mujeres Bicycles

Rent A Bicycle

Bicycles can be rented in town on Rueda Medina. Make sure the bike is in good working shape when you rent it and we suggest taking a quick video of it before setting out, especially of any dings or dents already on the bike. Make sure that a lock is included. Prices range from $10-$20/day.

Things to Do in Isla Mujeres

Isla mujeres top highlights.

There is plenty to do on Isla Mujeres. Whether you just want to relax or have an adventure, you’re sure to find something amazing to do. Here are some of our favorite recommendations.

Beaches on Isla Mujeres

1. Hit The Beach!

If it is pure relaxation you are seeking, Isla Mujeres has you covered. Easily laze away the day in a hammock at one of several beach clubs, splash around in the gorgeous sea, sip on a refreshing beverage in a coconut or get a massage at a pop-up stand on the beach. Your beachside options are endless. Playa Norte is the most famous beach on the island for its perfect white sand and clear waters. It often finds its way onto “Best beaches in the Caribbean” lists.

Eco and Historic Park Punta Sur Park in Isla Mujeres

2. Visit Punta Sur Park

A shockingly beautiful historic/eco park at the southernmost end of Isla Mujeres, Punta Sur is not to be missed for nature lovers. Complete with Mayan ruins, epic views, trails, cliffs, iguanas and more, taking a stroll through Punta Sur is a great way to get outside and experience something different on the island. Seeing the blue water here alone is worth it.

ISLAND LIFE TRAVEL TIP : GET TRAVEL INSURANCE

Travel Insurance is a must in our opinion. Standard health insurance likely doesn’t cover you while outside of the country so travel insurance will cover any emergency medical needs as well as trip cancellation, lost or stolen luggage (it happens), flight delays, missed connections and more. You can easily compare the top-rated travel insurance plans here .

MUSA Underwater Sculpture Garden in Isla Mujeres

3. See An Underwater Sculpture Garden

Go on a diving or snorkeling expedition to nearby MUSA Underwater Sculpture Park. Possibly the largest underwater sculpture project in the world, MUSA is home to over 500 sculptures of people, animals, cars, and so much more. Envisioned as an artificial reef, the sculptures are now growing plants and coral on them giving an otherworldly quality to the experience.

Explore snorkeling and scuba trips to MUSA here .

Dive, kayak, or snorkel at Parque De Los Suenos at Kin Ha in Isla Mujeres

4. Parque De Los Suenos at Kin Ha

Looking for a different way to spend your day? Diving, kayaking, snorkeling, boating, and everything in between are always on offer at Kin Ha. No matter where your mood guides you, you won’t be disappointed. This unique and wonderful beach club also has several terraced pools to relax and look out at the sea. The entrance fee gives you access to everything you may need such as lockers, towels and washroom facilities. Food and beverages are at an additional fee.

Snorkeling in Isla Mujeres

5. Go Snorkeling

While Cozumel gets most of the praise for its world-class snorkeling & diving, Isla Mujeres is no slouch either. Besides the MUSA underwater sculpture garden, there are several other lovely sites and reefs easily within reach. Perhaps the most famous is El Farito with its bright corals and and colorful fish. Or, if you are here at the right time of year (late May to early September), take a boat tour to experience snorkeling with the incredible Whale Sharks! The largest fish in the sea.

Check out this popular snorkeling tour

Relax at Garrafon De Castilla in Isla Mujeres

6. Garrafon De Castilla

This off the beaten path place to swim, sun and snorkel is a perfect place to relax. A spectacular setting, soft sand, lounge chairs and just the right number of amenities. With very affordable prices and few crowds, this may become your favorite place to snorkel on the island.

*DO NOT CONFUSE THIS with the Garrafon National Reef Park, which is an entertainment center that uses captive animals to entertain tourists. Not to mention houses said animals in small enclosures. We at Island Life do not support such places because we feel places like these are unethical and we love animals.

7. Eat Your Heart Out At Mercado Municipal

Mercado Municipal is the central market of Isla Mujeres and is the perfect place for an authentic, no-frills meal. This lively local market offers a glimpse into island life with authentic meals at unbeatable prices. The atmosphere inside the market is always bustling and vibrant, with locals gathering to haggle over prices and enjoy lunchtime snacks. Whether you want delicious eats, fresh juices, or local produce, you will find it at Mercado Municipal. Come with an empty stomach, explore the different stalls, and try a bit of everything.

Keep in mind that Mercado Municipal can be busy at lunchtime, but the craziness of the food market is one of the reasons we love it. Some of the most delicious, fresh food on Isla Mujeres is at the market. Don’t miss out on the vibrant fish tacos and savory empanadas.

8. Take A Sunset Cruise

Isla Mujeres is known for its stunning multi-hued sunsets, and one of the best ways to experience the golden hours of sunset is on a cruise. A sunset cruise off the shores of Isla Mujeres is the perfect way to end a day of exploring the island.

There are a few sunset tours on the island, but the most famous is probably the sunset cruise offered by The Joint Reggae Bar n’ Grill . This 3-hour sunset sail includes live reggae music, unlimited drinks and more!

9. Bike or Golf Cart Around the Island

You can’t beat exploring Isla Mujeres on a golf cart or bike. While cars are permitted on Isla Mujeres, very few are on the island. This makes golf cart rentals the best way to get around, and let’s be honest; they are so much fun! Isla Mujeres is also the perfect destination to rent a bike and explore. You can rent a bike on the island for around $10-$20 (USD) per day.

You can easily rent a golf cart when you disembark from the ferry, and it will cost between $50-$65 for a day. You will need a valid driver’s license to rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres. Once you get your golf cart, follow basic road rules and watch out for pedestrians. We recommend stopping at North Beach and Punta Sur to see the Mayan ruins dedicated to the Goddess Ixchel.

10. Marvel At the Street Art

Isla Mujeres is a beautiful and vibrant town positively covered in beautiful street art, from the well-known sea wall murals to intricate paintings on buildings downtown. Trust us, you will want to have your camera handy while exploring the island and looking for street art.

The sea wall murals on Isla Mujeres offer a dose of art and activism. Many of the ocean-themed art pieces were created to raise awareness about important issues, including ecotourism, sustainability, and the conservation of whale sharks. They are scattered all around the island, so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding some.

11. Go Deep Sea Fishing

Did you know that Isla Mujeres is a fishing paradise? It’s true! The breathtaking turquoise blue waters of Isla Mujeres offer various fantastic fishing options. Fishing here includes deep-sea fishing, spearfishing and inshore fishing. Whether you are an experienced angler or a beginner, fishing around Isla Mujeres is a great way to spend the day on the water.

Typically, the fishing excursions offered on the island include fishing equipment, bait, and tackle. You can catch a variety of fish, ranging from marlin and dorado to snapper, grouper and even tuna and mahi-mahi. It just depends on the season.

This highly recommended Private Inshore Fishing Experience is perfect for the whole family. Your group will board a private boat, head a few miles from the Isla Mujeres coastline, and spend time trolling for fish. Cast your line in the hopes of hooking barracuda, snapper, grouper and more, depending on the season.

12. Enjoy Yoga On the Beach

Is there a better way to enjoy island life than a calming yoga class with the waves lapping on the beach next to you? Build on those relaxing island vibes with a yoga practice that makes you feel centered and peaceful.

Most beach yoga classes on the island are 60-minute classes for around $20 (USD), and there are classes suitable for all fitness levels. Early birds can start their day with a morning session with the highly recommended Treehouse Yoga . If you prefer an evening practice, they also offer sunset yoga classes.

13. Stroll Down Avenida Miguel Hidalgo

Discover the charms of the Isla Mujeres pedestrian street of Miguel Hidalgo. This is a spot where you can enjoy the lively ambiance of the island. On this colorful avenue, you can find quaint boutiques, many restaurants, and a variety of tour operators.

We recommend visiting in the evening once the heat of the day cools down a bit and the entire avenue lights up. Avenida Miguel Hidalgo is a fantastic place to take an evening stroll and enjoy the fun island vibes of Isla Mujeres.

Remember that the restaurants in Miguel Hidalgo are catered towards tourists and can be slightly more expensive than those on the back streets. However, the quality of the meals is excellent.

14. Take A Day Trip to Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy is one of the most enchanting day trips in the Mexican Caribbean. Beautiful and uninhabited Isla Contoy is just 18 miles (30km) from Isla Mujeres. On the protected Isla Contoy, you can find stunning white-sand beaches, over 150 species of birds, and nesting grounds for sea turtles.

Many day trips to Isla Contoy include snorkeling, a tour of the island, and lunch. You’ll also have enough free time to explore or simply lounge by the beach and soak up the sun!

There are plenty of excellent day tours to choose from, including this highly recommended Isla Contoy Eco Adventure . This guided tour offers sailing and snorkeling on the beautiful Isla Contoy, along with a history of the flora and fauna of the island. After exploring, the tour includes a delicious lunch and open bar at an Isla Contoy hot spot. Note that most Contoy tours depart from Cancun so make sure you book a tour from Isla Mujeres if you are staying there.

15. Swim With Whale Sharks

Swimming with whale sharks is one of the best ways to experience the magic of Isla Mujeres. The waters around the island are on the migration route of whale sharks, making this one of the best places to spot them. From May to September, you can swim with these gentle giants in the waters off the coast and take in their enormous size and grace.

Whale sharks are incredible creatures, and seeing them in their natural habitat is nothing short of a spectacular experience. While snorkeling and swimming with whale sharks, you can also see manta rays and other marine life. Note that touching the whale sharks or inhibiting them in any way is strictly forbidden.

This highly recommended Whale Shark Swimming Tour offers a swim with whale sharks, followed by relaxing on Playa Norte beach with a fresh ceviche lunch. Be sure to request Isla Mujeres pick up when booking.

I’m new to traveling to Mexico and just started my research. Isla Mujeres sounds perfect! Would love a relaxing vibe versus big, party city vibe. How friendly is the island for Americans that don’t speak much Spanish?

Its very friendly. Many people speak English there. Enjoy!

Thank you for this brief but detailed information. I’ve been to a few cities in Mexico a few times but hadn’t heard of Isla Mujeres. I’m looking forward to going now and I can plan better because of what this site has put together.

I’ve never seen the ocean or flew on a plane! So I’m super excited to have so many first experience’s!!! February can’t come fast enough!!!!

I just came here to say that the underwater sculpture was one of my favorite parts of my trip to Mexico. I experienced it on a snorkeling tour and it was so worth it.

We had never heard of Isla Mujeres until coming across your guide when researching Mexico. This place looks amazing and now we’re going to make sure that we at least make a stop for a few nights here.

My family visited Isla Mujeres after coming across this visitor guide when planning our trip to Mexico. This place was great. We all especially loved Punta Sur Park. My teen enjoyed the Mayan ruins while my youngest loved all the little iguanas we found.

How is covid testing being handled on the island? We have been visiting Isla for over 10 years and haven’t been in over 2 years now due to covid. Planning on visiting at the end of October. Staying at Cabanas. We will need to be tested prior to returning to the US.

Testing is done internally at most large hotels and resorts, though many visitors choose to be tested at a local lab instead to avoid the possibility of a mandatory hotel quarantine if they get a positive test in the hotel. You can also get tested at the airport, but that’s sort of a last resort option in my opinion. I absolutely recommend getting Travel Insurance though just in case!

I had originally planned to just visit Mujeres for a day with my husband, then we read your guides about the place and decided to stay here. We love it. Such a relaxed vibe here, we ended up staying here for our entire vacation. Thank you!

Excellent guide(s), very helpful for planning a family vacation. We have been to the Yucatan so many times and it was such a pleasure to come somewhere new. Thanks.

I also recommend Guru Beach Club. Great guide here.

I was looking for a chill and amazing place for my birthday celebration and your guide sold me on Isla Mujeres..the island of Women! love that 😊 It was magical. Thank you!

Goodnesses me, ya’ll make it sound so exciting to visit Isla Mujeres! I have used this guide and the others to plan my whole visit! AAAAHHHHH I am so excited! Thank you for making it so easy for me. LOVE your guides!!!

Garrafon Natural Park is a must-see in Isla Mujeres , as it offers a beautiful place to relax and various activities.

The beaches of Isla Mujeres are often crowded and the great advantage of Garrafon is that it offers a much more peaceful and exclusive alternative . 😎

It is a small private beach that you can access by paying an entrance fee (the basic one starts at 1300 pesos) that includes lounge chairs, umbrellas, 3 zip lines, an oceanfront pool, kayaks and snorkeling equipment.

It is a perfect place for snorkeling, as Garrafón is part of the longest coral reef in the northern hemisphere and hosts a rich ecosystem.

You can also just relax in hammocks among the palm trees and enjoy a restaurant.

My Advice An interesting option is to take this all-inclusive tour to El Garrafon Park from Cancun that includes the round trip ferry, lunch and open bar on the boat.

And, of course, access to all activities. Make your reservation here:

  • How to get to Garrafon Park: It is located in Punta Sur , the southern end of the island (10min by cab from the ferry). Address: Carretera Garrafon Lote 9 km 6, Supermanzana 9, Isla Mujeres.
  • Important : try to get there early (around 10.30 am) because sun beds and umbrellas are included, but they might run out. 😉

Garrafón Park Isla Mujeres

Right next to Garrafón Park , you’ll find a cheaper, less crowded and quieter option: Garrafón de Castilla.

It’s not a luxury place, but it’s great for visiting Isla Mujeres on a budget.

It’s a simple beach club with the same amazing water for swimming or snorkeling, a restaurant and the basic amenities you need to enjoy yourself (lounge chairs, lockers, showers).

Go there now -before it gets too popular- because soon it will be full of tourists.

  • Entrance fee 100 pesos (includes snorkel equipment rental and lockers)

garrafon de castilla isla mujeres

South of Isla Mujeres lies Punta Sur, the highest point on the Yucatan Peninsula .

It is a must-see place in Isla Mujeres for its stunning ocean views, its Sculpture Park with 23 outdoor sculptures, and the ancient temple dedicated to Ixchel , the Mayan goddess of the moon and fertility.

You can reach it through the Garrafon Natural Park , along a beautiful path facing the Caribbean Sea.

punta sur isla mujeres

Playa Norte is one of the 10 best beaches in the world , according to the Travellers Choice Awards.

When you see its white sand and calm, warm, shallow waters, you’ll understand why!

You can walk about 650 ft into the sea and still be waist-deep.

It’s a 1 km long public beach with different sections. There’s a quieter part with restaurants (not bars) that’s ideal for families .

It’s a popular beach and it can get busy in high season, but it’s also one of the widest beaches in Mexico (328 ft wide), so you won’t feel cramped by the crowds.

Don’t miss the sunset at Playa Norte , it’s stunning. And if you’re an early bird (like me! 😉) the sunrise is also gorgeous .

  • You can rent chairs with umbrella (500 pesos for the whole day) or two lounge chairs (700 pesos for the day)
  • Playa Norte is 500 meters to the left of the ferry terminal

playa-norte-isla-mujeres

Playa Norte is the most famous beach in Isla Mujeres, but there are others worth a visit such as Playa El Pescador, Playa Tiburón, Playa Paraíso, Playa Na Balam, etc.

At Playa Pancholo , the sea is rough and therefore there are few people. It is ideal for sunbathing on the beach , but not for swimming.

Playa Lancheros is a small beach known for its restaurant serving Tikin Xic fish . It gets busy at lunchtime, so it is better to go in the morning or after 3 pm, when it is peaceful.

My Advice For me, the best beach on Isla Mujeres is Playa Sol .

playa lancheros isla mujeres

This is a little hidden gem, much less visited than the Playa Norte area.

Few people know about it and that is why it is a must-see in Isla Mujeres .

“El Parque de los Sueños”, also called Kin Há”, is a beach club that lets you enjoy the island to the fullest.

It is a small complex overlooking the Caribbean Sea that has a restaurant with terrace, an infinity pool with bar, several areas to relax under the sun, and easy access to the sea.

Kayaks, paddle boards and snorkeling equipment are available for rent.

  • How to get to Kin Ha : 15 minutes by cab from the ferry terminal (100 pesos)
  • Open from 8am to 11pm
  • Minimum entrance fee of 500 pesos.
  • Kin Ha Facebook page

Isla Mujeres has more than just beautiful beaches. If you have time, make sure to explore the island:

– Miguel Hidalgo Street : this is the main street of Isla Mujeres with 1,8 miles of shops, restaurants, bars and live music. You can walk along it day and night safely.

– The colors of Isla Mujeres : with its street art and colorful houses (check out the Crayola House ), wandering through its streets is a feast for the eyes.

– Walk along the boardwalk : this is the best way to tour the island from north to south in 40 minutes, with a view of the sea. Along the boardwalk, you’ll find several attractions such as the statue “la Trigueña” and the colorful Isla Mujeres sign (corner with Abasolo street) which is perfect for photos.

Snorkeling is a must-do activity on Isla Mujeres for two reasons: its clear waters and its closeness to the Great Mayan Reef which is the second largest in the world after Australia’s 🤩

If you want to snorkel in Isla Mujeres without booking a tour, you can go near the MIA hotel in Playa Norte. I also recommend you to go to beach clubs like Kin Ha, Garrafon de Castilla and especially Garrafon Park that provide you with the equipment.

but keep in mind that taking a tour lets you see much more!

El Farito (5 minutes by boat) is one of the most popular dive sites on Isla Mujeres . It is the smallest lighthouse on the island, surrounded by a reef with fish, corals and the submerged statue of the Virgen del Farito , the holy patron of the fishermen.

You can get there with a 1 hour tour, but I suggest taking the longer tour that also includes part of the Underwater Art Museum at Manchones reef .

snorkeling isla mujeres

Isla Mujeres has about 50 dive sites for all levels (from beginner to advanced).

My favorite one is Manchones Reef , which has lots of corals and fish, and is part of the MUSA, the world’s largest underwater museum with 470 sculptures.

These statues were made to replace corals that have been lost due to mass tourism and pollution. They are a new home for the biodiversity that lives on the ocean floor. ❤️

You can’t dive in Manchones by yourself because you need the equipment and a boat, so you need a guided tour .

  • Book the diving tour in Manchones here . It includes diving equipment and boat transportation from Cancun to the bay of Isla Mujeres:

diving isla mujeres manchones

A specialty of Isla Mujeres is Tikin Xik fish: a grilled fish with onion, achiote and other spices.

It is a Mayan recipe that I had already tried when I visited Isla Contoy , but I really suggest ordering it at the restaurant at Playa Lancheros or Playa Tiburón.

It is a large dish to share (about 290 pesos) with rice and salad.

Also, the view is very nice and the waves are calm so it is a perfect place to enjoy Isla Mujeres with kids.

poisson tikinchik

Only 30 km from Isla Mujeres lies Isla Contoy : one of the most beautiful places in Mexico !

This small, almost deserted island is a national park that hosts the most important seabird nesting site in the Mexican Caribbean .

Access is limited to 200 people per day, and it is required to book a tour to have the chance to enjoy its peaceful beaches and clear waters.

The visit to Contoy includes free time on the beach, a short guided tour of its trails (for those who want) and a delicious lunch of Tikinxik fish.

This is heaven on earth!

My Advice Tours to Contoy leave from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya around 9-10 am in the morning.

You can book the tour here:

This is an amazing activity to do in Isla Mujeres!

From June to September, whale sharks come to enjoy the warm waters of Isla Mujeres and Holbox , and you can see them up close.

They are protected, so you can swim with the whale sharks with a guide , following some rules:

-You can’t dive with them, but you can swim or snorkel near them at a maximum distance of 6,5 ft

-You can’t touch or feed them

-You can’t jump into the water from a boat

And don’t be afraid: the whale shark is the largest fish in the world, at 12 meters long, but it’s harmless 😉

  • Book this whale shark swimming tour , which also includes pick up from your hotel , all equipment, free time on Isla Mujeres and lunch:

If you want to bring back a souvenir from Isla Mujeres, I suggest that you stop by the Cooperativa de Mujeres Artesanas de Isla Mujeres . It is a very small place where several artisans sell bracelets, earrings and colorful necklaces.

It is the best way to support the local economy , in a responsible way and at a fair price. Besides, they are very friendly.

  • Address: La Gloria MZA. 160 Lot 5, Isla Mujeres. Facebook Page
  • Outside you will see a sign “The Women’s Bead Cooperative” and “Artesanías de Mujeres de Isla Mujeres”.

A catamaran ride in Isla Mujeres is one of the best ways to have fun in the sun and sea in the Riviera Maya .

It’s a day tour from Cancun with music and open bar (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), perfect for relaxing in a lively atmosphere.

It takes you snorkeling on the reef ( 1h), with free time in Isla Mujeres and lunch on the beach.

My Advice I suggest this catamaran tour to Isla Mujeres from Cancun with pick up at your hotel at a very good price .

You can book it here:

Built by “retired” pirate Fermín Mundaca in 1862, Hacienda Mundaca or Hacienda Vista Alegre then covered almost half of the island and was surrounded by beautiful gardens.

He dedicated it to a local beauty known as the “trigueña” to persuade her to marry him, but she chose to marry someone else.

Today you can visit what remains of the hacienda with its gardens, part of the house, some sculptures, canyons and a pond. There are also iguanas walking around.

  • Entrance fee 30 pesos, open from 9 am to 5 pm, the tour lasts 20-30 minutes
  • Located 300 meters from Lancheros Beach

You can fish in Isla Mujeres, both inshore and offshore, but there are several things to consider:

  • It is not easy to fish off the coast of Isla Mujeres : there are many rocks, and besides the swimming and snorkeling areas, you have to be very careful not to fish on the reefs , as they are protected.
  • The best season for fishing in Isla Mujeres is from January to the end of June.
  • Inshore, you can find mainly barracudas, other species such as yellowtail. Offshore you will find dorado, sarda, mackerel, etc.

My Advice   You don’t need a permit to fish offshore in Mexico , but you have to stay 656 ft away from swimmers.

You do need a permit to fish from a boat (even a kayak).

It’s better to go with a guide , on shore or offshore. When you rent a fishing boat, the captain includes the license in the price.

I love the colorful tombs in Mexican cemeteries.

It might be a strange visit for some, but I liked exploring the Isla Mujeres cemetery with its blue hues, flowers, candles and unique monuments.

There’s also the tomb of Fermín Mundaca (the one at Hacienda Mundaca that I told you about). You can spot it by the skull and crossed bones, a reference to his pirate life.

It’s actually empty because he died in Merida and was never brought back to the island.

The tortugranja, or turtle farm, is a place to visit on Isla Mujeres.

It’s not a place where turtles are exploited and where you can swim with them, but a conservation site.

There are sea and land turtles, and an aquarium with fish and other marine species.

Isla Mujeres is an important nesting site for giant turtles between May and September. They are now protected by the government and their eggs are moved to a safe place away from predators.

The baby turtles are kept in tanks, and then travelers and students from the island’s schools help them go back to their natural habitat.

This way, thousands of turtles are saved every year.

  • Admission 30 pesos, the visit is short, but it is for a good cause
  • Sac Bajo Highway Km 5, Fraccionamiento Mar Turquesa, Isla Mujeres

There are several yoga studios on Isla Mujeres , but the Treehouse is my favorite, as the classes are held in front of Playa Norte.

It is the perfect place to start the day with the sound of the waves of the Caribbean Sea.

Classes are Monday through Saturday at 7:30 am and 9:00 am, and Wednesday through Saturday at 6:00 pm.

I suggest taking the class in the morning because there is hardly anyone on the beach and it is very peaceful.

This is the only museum on Isla Mujeres , and of course it is a maritime museum.

The Captain Dulché museum features explorers Ramón Bravo, Jacques Cousteau and Ernesto Dulché Escalante. There are photographs, beautiful ship models, anchors and various maritime objects related to the island.

Besides the museum, there is a beach club with restaurant and bar, a volleyball court, a swimming pool, small cabanas and deck chairs on the beach.

  • The museum is free of charge
  • Captain Dulché Facebook page

Please do not do this activity on Isla Mujeres . ⛔

The big entertainment company Dolphin Discovery offers packages to swim with dolphins and take expensive photos with them.

This is not an eco-friendly activity, but the opposite. They keep dolphins captive as circus animals.

Sadly, this is one of the most popular activities in Isla Mujeres for families. Make a difference and don’t do this kind of activities.

If you love animals, why not see them in their natural habitat?

Swimming with whale sharks is done with respect for the species. Another good option is to swim with the turtles in Akumal .

  • Check out my guide: How to swim with turtles in Akumal?

I don’t recommend you to arrive at Isla Mujeres without a reservation because prices go up easily and everything fills up quickly.

Here are some of my hotel recommendations for all types of budgets:

  • Nomads Hotel Hostel & Beachclub : a gorgeous new hotel located in front of the sea, beautifully decorated, with pool, hammocks, bar and terrace. Nice rooms from 99 euros, but collective dorms cost only 10 usd per night ! An incredible price for this kind of service.
  • Posada Paso del Sol : small hotel with very good value for Isla Mujeres . Clean, comfortable bed, good location near the ferry, Playa Norte and restaurants. from 73 usd a night!
  • Privilege Aluxes:  this is a beautiful all-inclusive hotel on Isla Mujeres , reserved exclusively for adults. It is located on a sandy beach very close to Playa Norte, and has 2 pools, 2 restaurants, a beach bar, a spa, air-conditioned rooms and a king size bed. From 203 euros a night or 275 usd a night all inclusive!
  • Mia Reef Isla Mujeres Resort: is known for its unique location on El Yunque Islet . It is surrounded by water and has a private beach as well as a pool, bar and restaurant. The hotel is less luxurious than the Privilege Aluxes, but welcomes children (there is even a babysitting service and a game room). From 300 usd per night all-inclusive.

I like to watch my budget so I can travel more often. 🤓

If you’re like me, here are some tips to visit Isla Mujeres on a budget:

-The cheapest way to get to Puerto Juarez from Cancun’s hotel zone is by taking the R-1 bus (red) that drops you off right here , near the pier. The ticket costs 12 pesos.

-To save money on drinks on the beach, it’s best to buy everything (water, drinks, snacks) at the Oxxo at the Cancun Maritime Terminal or at the Isla Mujeres Oxxo, which is just to the left as you get off the boat.

-You can enjoy Playa Norte without paying for a sunbed . The same goes for Playa Sol , where it’s easier to find a shady spot under the palm trees. Don’t forget to bring beach towels, a hat and sunscreen, as the sun is strong.

-For cheap eats in Isla Mujeres , it’s better to avoid the beach. The municipal market is always a good option, and I also liked the restaurant El Poc Chuc (corner of Juarez Avenue and Abasolo street) with delicious tortas (sandwiches) for only 35-40 pesos.

-For a cheap hotel on Isla Mujeres , I recommend the great Nomads Hostel with its dorms at 15 usd a night.

-Sometimes taking a tour is cheaper than going on your own. In Puerto Juarez, you can join a tour to Isla Mujeres with the local cooperative: for 500 pesos, it’s a full-day tour from 9am to 5pm that includes the port fee of 50 pesos, boat transportation, 2h of free time on Isla Mujeres, snorkeling at El Farito and lunch (fish or chicken tikinxik).

Driving a car is not the best way to explore Isla Mujeres , as parking spaces are limited on the island.

You can choose from bicycles , or golf carts and scooters if you want a motorized vehicle.

The average cost of renting a golf cart on Isla Mujeres is 850 pesos for the day, from 10am to 5pm. You do need a driver’s license to rent one.

There are many rental companies and you can find cheaper prices as you walk away from the pier . Avoid the vendors who approach you when you get off the ferry: they charge extra.

You can also arrange to have your golf cart delivered to your hotel if you are staying on Isla Mujeres.

The island is small enough to walk around, but the sun is strong , so it’s better to start early and wear a hat or cap.

How many days in Isla Mujeres

Many travelers take one day to go to Isla Mujeres from Cancun , but you can spend 2 or 3 days on Isla Mujeres to better enjoy the beach.

Playa Norte is the most popular beach because it has everything (restaurants, sunbeds, etc.).

But if you want to see more of the island than just Playa Norte, here’s a one-day itinerary:

  • In the morning, catch the ferry to Isla Mujeres – book your ferry ticket here!
  • Rent a golf cart or a bike and head to Garrafon de Castilla Park to spend the morning there (snorkeling, relaxing, swimming)
  • Walk to Punta Sur to see the sculpture park and the temple of Ixchel
  • Go to Playa Lancheros to try the famous fish Tikin Xic
  • Go to Playa Norte , the most popular beach on the island
  • You can join a snorkeling tour at El Farito, but you need a group of at least 4 people (very easy in high season)
  • Watch the sunset at Playa Norte or Playa Sol, right next to it
  • Before leaving, you can stroll along Higaldo Avenue

How to get to Isla Mujeres: plane, ferry, bus

There’s no direct flight to Isla Mujeres, you have to fly to Cancun first.

Many airlines fly to Cancun (KLM, United, Aeromexico, Iberia, etc) from Europe and North America.

To find your cheap flight to Cancun , you can use our flight comparison tool, in partnership with Skyscanner: it’s the easiest way to get the best price!

It’s easy to travel to Isla Mujeres from Cancun airport .

First you have to go to Puerto Juarez to catch the ferry . Here are the different options:

  • Get a taxi: the advantages are that there is no waiting time and the trip is direct, but it is the most expensive option.
  • By bus : ADO buses leave every 30 minutes and go to downtown Cancun (90 pesos). Then you have to get from downtown Cancun to Puerto Juarez, by cab (about 90 pesos) or by bus 13 which is cheaper.
  • By public transport : colectivos (shared cabs) are the cheapest option but you have to wait for the van to fill up.

To reach Isla Mujeres, you have to take the ferry from Cancun .

There are different piers:

  • Puerto Juarez : only 3 km from downtown. With 2 docks practically next to each other, the newer and better one is called Gran Puerto. It’s a 30 minute trip with Ultramar, departing every 30 minutes from 5 am to 8:30 pm, then every hour until 11:30 pm.

The ferry has limited seats – Book your round trip ticket to Isla Mujeres (valid for 6 months after the departure date):

  • Cancun hotel zone : there are 3 docks with Ultramar – Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol, El Embarcadero (Playa Linda). Click here for the ferry schedules to Isla Mujeres.

To get from Playa del Carmen to Cancun to catch the ferry, it takes 1 hour, by bus or car.

If you don’t have a rental car, you can take private transportation (about 500-600 pesos one way) or the ADO bus that leaves every 15 minutes from the Alternate Terminal in Playa del Carmen for 80 pesos.

Make sure to choose the right arrival terminal and not the one at the Cancun airport .

Once you arrive at the ADO Terminal in Cancun , you can take a cab to Puerto Juarez ($100MXN) or a Route 1 bus that passes in front of the station.

Yes, your ticket includes 1 piece of luggage up to a maximum of 25 kg. Measurements: 45 x 70 x 27cm

In Puerto Juarez , someone might approach you saying that the ferry has been cancelled (which is not true) to offer you a private transport.

The shuttle is real and goes to Isla Mujeres, but it is much more expensive and longer than the ferry.

Yes, you can.

The only place to board the ferry with a car is Punta Sam , 8 km from Cancun.

It takes about 45 minutes to reach Isla Mujeres. I recommend arriving an hour early.

-Departures with Ultramar : see ultramar Carga schedules here . It costs 400 pesos and includes up to 4 people per vehicle.

-Departures with Marítima : 5h15, 8h15, 11h15, 14h15, 17h15, 20h15. It costs 482 pesos and includes passengers.

Yes, there is a large multi-story parking lot in Puerto Juarez .

The rate is 11 pesos per hour, and there are also daily rates.

And you can also find free parking in the area (on the street).

People often ask me which one is better , but they are very different.

There are more things to do on Isla Mujeres , more restaurants and shops, so it’s a great place for friends, couples and families.

But there are also many more tourists , and it gets busy during the day as most visitors come from Cancun for the day.

Isla Mujeres is not a place to relax in complete peace and quiet, but to have fun in the sun in a more lively atmosphere.

Holbox , on the other hand, is still less crowded than Isla Mujeres. The streets are dirt roads, the vibe is very laid-back and a bit hippy, with small hotels.

There are long sandy beaches with few people , it’s amazing!

But keep in mind that there are more mosquitoes and the streets get muddy when it rains.

  • To learn more about Holbox, check out My Complete Guide To Isla Holbox!

punta mosquito holbox

You can use U.S. dollars in Isla Mujeres , but the exchange rate is not good: it’s better to pay with Mexican pesos .

You can exchange up to 300$USD with your passport at HSBC, Banamex, Banco Azteca or CI Bank.

There are several ATMs where you can withdraw pesos but it’s important to use only bank ATMs .

Unfortunately, there are cases of card fraud on the island, so I suggest you use your credit card only to pay for the hotel.

Isla Mujeres is safe and there are police officers on the streets, but as everywhere (especially in tourist destinations!) there are skilled pickpockets.

So don’t leave your bag unattended, don’t leave valuables (e.g. your camera) in the golf cart, etc.

High season is from November to April: it’s dry and the temperature is around 77°F.

Low season is from June to October: risk of hurricanes, more rain, high humidity.

The best time to visit Isla Mujeres is from December to February.

Here is a map with the points of interest on Isla Mujeres:

Still not convinced? Watch this video of Isla Mujeres to see how beautiful the island is.

Renting a car is for sure the best way to explore Yucatan and make the most of your stay!

To rent a car, personally, I always use Booking.com Cars, for a few reasons:

  • You can easily compare the rental cars prices between all the agencies: for sure the easiest way to find the best rate!
  • Cancellation is often offered free of charge: no need to worry if you change your mind
  • Booking Cars offers full insurance coverage at a lower price than the rental companies , so it’s an instant saving with no effort

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Isla Mujeres, Mexico

This stunning Mexican island has gorgeous beaches, all-inclusive resorts, and an underwater museum.

Best Things to Do in Isla Mujeres

Best nightlife in isla mujeres, best restaurants in isla mujeres, best time to visit isla mujeres, how to get to isla mujeres, how to get around isla mujeres.

Itzel Garrido/Travel + Leisure

Just off the coast of Cancun's busy Hotel Zone is a sliver of Caribbean island paradise. A 15-minute ferry ride, but an entire world away from the rattle and hum of Cancun’s Avenida Kukulkan, Isla Mujeres is a five-mile-long tropical oasis where the natural beauty dials up and the pace of life slows way, way down.

"Isla Mujeres is a great alternative to Cancun with excellent beaches, crystal-clear turquoise sea, no seaweed, and a much more local feel," said Zach Rabinor, CEO of Journey Mexico .

Named one of the best islands in Mexico and Central and South America by Travel + Leisure , Isla Mujeres has a laid-back, local vibe in the early mornings and evenings, and a buzzier, beach-party island scene in the afternoons.

The island's history spans centuries, originally serving as a sanctuary for the Mayan goddess Ixchel, the goddess of fertility — hence the name, Isla Mujeres. In the 19th century, it was established as a fishing village. Today it is a thriving coastal community, with gorgeous hotels, perfect beaches, and toes-in-the-sand restaurants. But it is also a paradise for outdoor adventure, thanks to its position along the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world.

"The island's well-drawn and colorful main streets offer guests a taste of authentic Mexican hospitality with a relaxed and cheerful Caribbean atmosphere," says Erika Mitzunaga, an expert on Isla Mujeres and the public relations director for the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun All-Inclusive Spa Resort over in Cancun's Hotel Zone. "Only nine miles from Cancun, a visit to this corner of Mexico is a must. Its beaches, its pirate stories, and its culinary richness based on its history as a fishing village make it one of the best attractions in the state of Quintana Roo."

Best Hotels & Resorts in Isla Mujeres

Impression isla mujeres by secrets.

Secrets' newest resort to open in the Mexican Caribbean, Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets , is an adults-only, all-inclusive property. The five-star resort has a remote location on the south side of the island away from the busy Playa Norte. It features fabulous restaurants and, according to Rabinor, its rooftop bar and lounge, The Top, is the place to be. The hotel also has a notable sustainability program, Save Our Sharks, designed to protect the shark population in the area.

Privilege Aluxes Hotel

Perfect for those who like to be close to town, Privilege Aluxes Hotel is a short walk to the town center, located on the sun-bleached shores of Playa Norte. The five-star resort is adults-only, with a collection of exclusive suites, each of which has its own Jacuzzi or private pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

If you want to soak in the island’s beautiful sunrises, look no further than the sleek, modern Hotel Izla . The 123-room resort has an oceanfront pool and a small section of beach, but the star feature here is its stunning rooftop infinity pool with endless views out over the Caribbean.

Belo Isla Mujeres

Located on the sugary shores of North Beach, Belo Isla Mujeres is an intimate boutique hotel with 65 guest rooms and suites. Book the Luxury Ocean Front Villa, with two bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, and views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Don't sleep on the fifth-floor rooftop pool with private Bali beds, hot tubs, a bar, and a rotating roster of live DJs.

Karen Doody/Stocktrek Images via Getty Images

Although the island is only five miles long and half a mile wide, travelers will find that the atmosphere shifts on the island as you move from north to south, offering a wide range of things to see and do in between. The northern tip is home to Playa Norte, one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, and a hot spot of hotels, activities, restaurants, and bars. The southern end of the island is far more tranquil, rugged, and remote, serving as the jumping-off point from which to explore Punta Sur and Garrafon Natural Reef Park.

Isla Mujeres Underwater Museum

Just off the southern coast of Isla Mujeres is the Underwater Art Museum , one of the most unique things to do in both Isla Mujeres and Cancun. “An important attraction of the island is the Isla Mujeres Underwater Museum, with more than 600 sculptures created to facilitate the preservation of natural coral reef,” said Mitzunaga.

Swim With Whale Sharks

Isla Mujeres is one of the best places in Mexico to swim with whale sharks. These gentle giants flock to the waters known as The Blue, a two-hour boat ride from the island, between May and September. It is one of the largest aggregations of whale sharks in the world.

Enjoy the Beach

Isla Mujeres’ Playa Norte is considered one of the best beaches in Mexico , if not the world. Thanks to its selection of buzzy beachfront bars and restaurants, fabulous hotels and water attractions, and fine, powder-soft sand, the beaches of Isla Mujeres are its pride and joy. And because the western coast of the island is protected, expect calm, clear water and no sargassum.

Bike (or Golf Cart) Around the Island

Unlike nearby Isla Holbox , cars are permitted on Isla Mujeres. But the most popular modes of transportation around the island are golf carts, scooters, or bicycles. But more than just practical, this style of seeing the island is a lot of fun and allows visitors to enjoy the scenery as they get around. The pace of life moves slowly at the beach in general, and that is definitely taken to a new level on Isla Mujeres. Tip: If you’re opting to bike the island, Rabinor recommends an early start before the heat and the humidity of the day become too smothering.

"My recommendation," said Mitzunaga, "is to take the ferry early, before 10 a.m., rent a golf cart and drive the five-mile-long island." The stops she recommends are: North Beach, which is recognized as one of the best beaches in the world; Punta Sur, to visit a small Mayan structure dedicated to the Goddess Ixchel; and the newly reopened turtle farm, which is managed by a local cooperative.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Isla Mujeres is as versatile as it is beautiful, with a party scene that can transition easily from day to night. Just walk along Playa Norte to see the array of toes-in-the-sand beach clubs, or, when the sun goes down, stroll along Avenida Hidalgo for the best nightlife.

Come to Xantolo for the menu of regional specialties from around Mexico, but stay for the sexy cocktails, salsa music, and fabulous people-watching. Salsa music kicks off every night at 10:30 p.m. and doesn't stop until after midnight.

The dressed-down vibe at Stingray is what hooks travelers in. Well, that and the swing chairs that surround the bar. But what keeps people coming back to this Avenida Hidalgo hot spot is the music. The two-story bar is in the heart of downtown Isla, just a block from Playa Norte, and features live music upstairs underneath the rooftop palapa. Downstairs things get a little more performative with late-night karaoke. You may find regulars here singing until the sun comes up.

Open to guests of Impressions by Secrets, this rooftop oasis is decked out with low-slung white couches, hanging lanterns, and billowing white curtains. The vibe here is sexy and chic, matched only by the sweeping panoramic ocean views. Rabinor says, "Go here for magnificent views over the Caribbean Sea and great drinks, as well as great service."

For such a small island, it's rather overwhelming how many great restaurants there are on Isla Mujeres.

Mitzunaga recommends that everyone stops at Marbella. "Go here for the quality of its food, access by yacht, and its beach club," she says. The barefoot luxury experience has stellar beachfront views and an impeccable menu of grilled seafood, crudo, and a stunning raw bar.

ZaZa Yacht & Beach Club

ZaZa's is much more than a restaurant — it's a destination in its own right. Featuring a private dock, a large saltwater pool, beachfront access, and a palapa-covered dining area, ZaZa's is a place meant to leisurely unwind for the entire day. Guests can make a general day pass reservation or bump it up a notch and splurge on the all-inclusive day pass.

Loncheria Alexia y Geovanny

Of course, not everything on Isla Mujeres has to be high-brow. Rabinor recommends Loncheria Alexia & Geovanny for traditional homemade local food. The tacos and fresh fish here are superb, and this is one of the top spots on Isla Mujeres that is beloved by locals. You'll find this spot by the Mercado Municipal.

Coco Restaurant & Beach Bar

Perched directly on Playa Norte, Coco Restaurant & Beach Bar is where you’ll want to be for sunset. The fiery, painted sky pairs perfectly with a plate of fresh fish or steak and shrimp skewers. Sip a tropical cocktail on the second floor for the best experience.

Mitzunaga notes that the most famous dish on the island is the Tikin Xic fish. "It is the most representative dish of Isla Mujeres," she says. "It is marinated with achiote, wrapped in banana leaves, and grilled. It is then served with red onion, salad, and rice."

Mexico overall is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit Isla Mujeres is from December to March when days are bright and sunny and evenings are a bit cooler and breezy. The average high during these months is 83 degrees during the day. Visit Isla Mujeres in February or March for the Isla Carnival, a five-day festival of dancing, parades, and performances.

The high season is from January through April, when the weather is at its best but prices tend to be at their highest. Prices will be lower between May and December, but the low season (when you’ll find the best deals) is from September to November. This time, however, coincides with hurricane season, so expect a lot more rainfall during these months. The wettest month in Isla Mujeres is October.

While visitors can dock their own boats and yachts at the many clubs on the island, most people visit Isla Mujeres from the Gran Puerto Cancun ferry dock. The dock is located in Puerto Juarez, a few minutes from downtown Cancun. Ultramar ferry boats leave every half hour from 5 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., and every hour after that. The crossing takes 15 minutes.

Alternatively, the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun All-Inclusive Spa Resort, located in the Cancun Hotel Zone, has its own ferry stop for Isla Mujeres. Guests of the hotel get complimentary round-trip ferry tickets on a first-come, first-served basis by registering with the pool concierge the night before.

Isla Mujeres is not a car-free island, but most locals and visitors get around on two wheels or golf carts. Golf carts and scooter rentals are available all over Playa Norte. Guests can circumnavigate the island in about two hours, though plan for more time because you'll certainly want to stop and see the sights along the way.

A Day Trip to Isla Mujeres, Mexico: Everything You Need to Know

A colorfull sign reading 'Isla Mujeres' on a sandy beach with the sea in the background

Welcome to this guide on visiting Isla Mujeres.

And although I’ll describe how to plan a perfect Isla Mujeres day trip , after reading what the island has to offer you might decide to stay longer than just a day!

Literally translated as “Island of Women”, this beautiful island is located just off the coast of Cancún in the Caribbean Sea.

Known for its great beaches and lively party scene, it is a great escape from the more touristy areas of Cancún and Playa del Carmen and is only a short ferry ride away.

In this article, we will explore the island, how to get there, what you can see and do, the best time to visit as well as some recommendations for a perfect day trip.

The easiest way to plan a day trip to Isla Mujeres is by booking a full-day catamaran tour to Isla Mujeres .

But, you can also take a ferry to the island to spend the day exploring everything Isla Mujeres has to offer.

And that; both how to get to Isla Mujeres and the best things to do on Isla Mujeres is what I want to share with you.

A Day Trip to Isla Mujeres

a day trip to Isla Mujeres

With the region of the Riviera Maya being quite large, many wonder what Isla de Mujeres offers and why you should travel here rather than elsewhere.

Why Travel to Isla Mujeres?

The island as a whole is a lot quieter than the bigger cities of Cancún and Playa del Carmen , which is why many come here for more peaceful vibes. However, the island still retains a nice ambiance and atmosphere.

There is a nice mix of both busy and secluded beaches, with the option of a lively night out . So after soaking up the sun, you can head to numerous bars and clubs that are open until the early hours.

One of my favorite bars on Isla Mujeres is Isla Brewing Company, which is an excellent option on the northern end of the island, with a great range of craft beers!

On the north side of the island, there are lots of beautiful beaches and some of the best waters for diving and snorkeling in the entire region.

And to add to that, Isla de Mujeres also happens to be one of the most popular places in Mexico to get your PADI scuba diving certificate . This is due to the cheap prices, numerous companies that are based here as well as the great visibility of the waters and exotic marine wildlife that you can observe.

How to Get to Isla Mujeres?

Ultramar ferry docked at Isla Mujeres

A visit to Isla Mujeres is a popular day trip from Cancun , but also from Playa del Carmen.

And getting to Isla Mujeres is easy.

You can get the ferry either from Puerto Juarez or from two locations in the Cancun hotel zone : Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol. Puerto Juarez is the cheapest option and buying a round-trip ticket is slightly cheaper than buying two one-way tickets.

At all three locations the ferry is operated by Ultramar, which has a good website , in English, with timetables and prices. You can book online or go to the ferry terminal and buy your ticket there.

Alternatively, if you choose to take the ferry from Puerto Juarez, Jetway is another provider there with slightly lower prices than Ultramar.

If you are in Playa del Carmen (slightly more south than Cancun), then be aware that despite having a large port as well, they don’t actually offer ferries to Isla Mujeres . You’ll need to take a bus to Cancún and then take one of the ferries mentioned above.

Use the bus company called ADO — one of Mexico’s coach services. They run routes all over the country, are inexpensive and the buses are clean and modern.

Tip: if you are planning a day trip to Isla Mujeres, make sure you check the time of the last ferry back!

Things To Do on Isla Mujeres

In this part of the guide, we will look at some of the best things you can see and do when visiting Isla de Mujeres.

However, check out the “best time to visit Isla Mujeres” section below as well, as some of these may be impacted by the season.

1. Snorkeling and Diving

scuba diver getting ready for a dive

Isla Mujeres is one of the most popular places to learn to dive or to go diving as an already certified diver. Many travelers visit Isla Mujeres with the sole purpose of scuba diving the beautiful dive sites.

As well as some of the lowest prices, there are some really beautiful, crystal clear waters to explore on the north and western sides of the island.

Another great experience is swimming with whale sharks , and the best time to do so is between May and August. There are small tours you can join to see the whale sharks. However, because whale sharks are protected by the island, only one or two people can swim with them at a time.

If you like to snorkel on your own from the beach, Isla Mujeres unfortunately is not the best place. Although they do have Garafon Reef (where you can also go kayaking and zip-lining by the way), the waves around the island can be high and rough. Then there’s North Beach which is perhaps the calmest spot on the island, but visibility is not great.

The best snorkeling around Isla Mujeres is done by boat. So if you’re mainly interested in snorkeling and spending the day on the water, then scroll down and read my recommendations for Isla Mujeres boat tours.

Tip: if you are only planning a one-day trip to Isla Mujeres and want to go diving or swim with whale sharks, I highly recommend booking that in advance. Do a Google search for dive centers on Isla Mujeres. Almost all of them offer diving, snorkeling, and swimming with whale sharks (during the season). Read some reviews and choose the one you feel most comfortable with.

2. The Underwater Museum

MUSA underwater sculptures

Another really cool thing to do on Isla Mujeres is visit MUSA (Museo subacuático de Arte), which is a one-of-a-kind underwater museum located just off the coast of Isla de Mujeres!

There are over 500 life-size sculptures, spread out underwater between Isla Mujeres and Cancun.

Whilst you can’t visit independently, many dive centers offer trips here. And because the dive site is shallow, even if you’re not a certified scuba diver yet, you could, after some initial training, do a first dive here!

Do keep in mind that if you are not a certified diver, going diving here will take up most of your day. So if this is something you really want to do, you might want to change your day trip to Isla Mujeres into a multi-day trip.

And, although diving will give you the best experience, you can also snorkel here. Most sculptures are located in relatively shallow water, so you can easily see them while snorkeling above them.

3. The Beaches

one of the beaches on Isla Mujeres

The island has two main zones for beaches. You will find the best beaches for relaxing and swimming on the north end, with the best being Playa Norte (also known as Playa Cocos) where there are virtually no waves and plenty of space. However, this beach tends to attract more people.

The western side (which faces the busy hotel zone of Cancún) has many beaches where you can swim, and it has a nice range of amenities nearby. Two of the best beaches in this area are Playa Lancheros and Playa Indios.

The southern end of the island is more rugged, with a hilly landscape and shorelines, whilst the eastern side is wilder and is open sea until you hit Cuba (too dangerous to swim).

ruins of the Ixchel temple

On the southern tip of the island known as Punta Sur ( south point in English), you can visit the ruins of the Ixchel temple , which were dedicated to the goddess Ixchel herself.

Ixchel is known as the ancient Mayan goddess of medicine and midwifery, and many Mayan women used to make the pilgrimage to the island to honor her.

Nowadays, despite the ruins being mostly eroded due to hurricanes, you can still climb up the vantage point and get beautiful panoramic views of the island and sea .

5. Hiring a Golf Cart

driving around Isla Mujeres in a golf cart

Another fun thing to do on Isla Mujeres? Rent a golf cart and buzz around the island !

Renting one will cost you around $45 for the day, and allows you to venture more off the beaten path , and get from the north to south ends of the island a lot quicker.

Regarding safety; there isn’t a lot of traffic on the island. You’ll find virtually no cars but instead just taxis, some buses, scooters, and golf carts.

6. Shopping, Eating & Drinking

2 restaurants in Isla Mujeres

You’ll find the highest concentration of shops, bars and restaurants on the north side of Isla Mujeres.

This is also where the ferry arrives, which makes it easy to check out some shops and find a good place to eat, even if you are only visiting Isla Mujeres for one day.

You’ll find a lot of souvenir shops, jewelry stores, and a few liquor stores offering you tequila shots no matter what time of day you walk past.

But, there is also a great selection of restaurants. Whether you want some local tacos, a good pizza, or healthy vegan food, you’ll find a restaurant for it.

The area becomes more lively around sunset with bars filling up and loud music coming from all angles. If you’re looking for a good night out, you can surely find it here!

Travel Tips for Visiting Isla de Mujeres

The best time to visit isla mujeres.

the best time to visit Isla Mujeres

For the most consistent, hot weather you’ll want to visit Isla de Mujeres between January and April , where temperatures hover around 85°F (29°C).

If you are thinking of heading between June and October, then be aware that this time has an increased risk of wet weather due to hurricane seasons, where there is slightly more chance of an occurrence in September and October.

Overall, the best time to visit Isla Mujeres would be between November to early January. The weather is great this time of year and the high tourist season has yet to start, meaning generally lower prices for accommodation and travel.

If spotting whale sharks is on your to-do list , then the best time to visit is between May and September.

And for those who are coming to Isla Mujeres to dive , you should know that the best diving conditions around Isla Mujeres are between December and April.

My Recommendations for Visiting Isla Mujeres

travel to Isla Mujeres

Regardless of whether you are a certified scuba diver or not, I think one of the main draws of visiting Isla de Mujeres is the unique underwater museum , where you can observe over 500 statues near the coral reef.

During your day trip to Isla Mujeres you should also head to Centro and check out some of the murals along the sea walls, which have been painted by artists from all over the world.

In terms of the best beaches, I would check out Playa Lancheros for an all-rounder with some waves and local bars and restaurants nearby, and also Playa Norte for calmer waters!

Last but not least, for those who want to see more nature, head to Isla Contoy , which is located some 30km north of Isla de Mujeres. The island is one of the best places in Mexico to see nesting turtles and sea birds. If you want to combine a day trip to Isla Mujeres with a visit to Isla Contoy the best option is to book a tour that combines both .

How to Get Around Isla Mujeres

Taxis are the easiest way to get around Isla Mujeres. They are everywhere and fairly inexpensive.

2. Rent a Golf Cart

As I mentioned before, golf carts are a popular way to get around. They might end up costing a bit more than taking taxis, but they are so much fun!

You can rent golf carts by the hour or for one or several days. There are several rental locations close to the ferry terminal and prices are the same at all locations.

3. Rent a Bicycle

The island is small enough to easily explore by bicycle.

Several places on Avenida Rueda Medina rent bicycles, but make sure you get one that’s in good shape.

Booking an Isla Mujeres Tour

an Isla Mujeres tour by catamaran

As I said at the start of this article, the easiest way to plan a day trip to Isla Mujeres is by booking a tour.

Depending on what you want your Isla Mujeres day trip to look like, there are some pros and cons to booking an organized tour:

Pros of Booking an Isla Mujeres Tour

  • Everything is organized for you
  • Most tours pick you up from your hotel
  • You get to spend time on a beautiful boat
  • You get to explore some of the best snorkeling spots
  • You can combine a visit to Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy
  • Most tours offer snorkeling equipment, food, and an open bar

Cons of Booking an Isla Mujeres Tour

  • Your schedule is fixed
  • You have limited time to actually explore the island

Which Isla Mujeres Tour to Book

Depending on your interests, there are a few different Isla Mujeres Tours you can book:

  • A Full-Day Catamaran Tour On this tour you’ll spend most of the day sailing on a beautiful catamaran, taking you to different idyllic locations. You’ll be able to swim, snorkel, enjoy a delicious lunch, and a beautiful beach.
  • A Fun Catamaran Tour & Island Visit This fun double-decker catamaran takes you to a great snorkeling spot as well, but unlike the first option, it offers more time on Isla Mujeres to actually explore the island. Breakfast and lunch are served on the boat and you can enjoy unlimited drinks because they offer an open bar on board!
  • A Speedboat Tour to Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy This tour takes you snorkeling and lets you explore both Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy. If you want to see as much as possible in one day, then this might be the perfect Isla Mujeres day trip for you.

The Perfect Isla Mujeres Day Trip

And that’s all from this guide on visiting Isla Mujeres!

Having read this article, you should now have a better idea about what there is to see and do on Isla Mujeres, how to get there from mainland Mexico, and the best time to visit.

Isla Mujeres is a beautiful, lively, and affordable destination. And although it’s a perfect day trip, it’s also definitely worth spending more than a day here.

If you do decide to stay longer, there’s a wide range of hotels, resorts, and rental apartments on the island. And, if you were ever thinking about trying scuba diving, definitely consider starting on Isla Mujeres!

And if you love Mexican Caribbean islands, Holbox Island, which is listed as one of the best Caribbean islands , is also worth checking out.

If you’re staying in Cancun and are looking for more things to do in the area, this is a list of Cancun’s best day trips .

Table of Contents

Visit Isla Mujeres: the must-sees

1. garrafon park.

The  Garrafon Natural Park  is a must in Isla Mujeres because it offers both a place of relaxation and several activities.

It should be understood that the  beaches of Isla Mujeres  are quickly overrun and Garrafon offers a much quieter and more exclusive alternative.

It is a  small private beach  where you can access by paying an entrance fee of 90$usd which includes deckchair, parasol, shower and toilet.

It is the ideal place for snorkeling  because  Garrafon is part of the  longest coral reef in the northern hemisphere  and is home to a rich ecosystem.

It is also possible to go kayaking  ,  zip  line  (there are 3!), enjoy the  swimming pool  facing the sea and rest in the  hammocks  between the palm trees. In addition, there is a restaurant on site.

Tips for your Isla Mujeres itinerary: An interesting option is to take this  “all-inclusive” excursion to Parc El Garrafon from Cancun    which  includes the return ferry , breakfast on the boat, open bar on the boat for 18+, lunch on site.

In addition of course to access to all activities!  To book here.

  • Getting to Parque Garrafon  : it is located in Punta Sur, the southern tip of the island (10min by taxi from the ferry). Address: Carretera Garrafon Lote 9 km 6, Supermanzana 9, Isla Mujeres.
  • Important  : it is better to arrive early (around 10:30 am) because if the deckchair and parasol are included with the entrance, it is only according to availability.

Isla Mujeres itinerary 1 day

2. Garrafon de Castilla

Right next to Parc Garrafon is its cheaper, much less crowded and quieter version:  Garrafon de Castilla

You don’t come here for a luxury stay, but it’s the perfect option for a  cheap day out in Isla Mujeres!

It is a simpler beach club, but offers  the same beautiful water  for swimming or snorkeling, as well as an on-site restaurant and the basic facilities (deckchair, lockers, showers).

We must take advantage of the good plan now before it is known and invaded by tourists!

  • Entrance 150 pesos (includes snorkelling equipment rental and locker)

Castilla, Isla Mujeres itinerary

3. South Point Explorer

South of Isla Mujeres is  Punta Sur , the highest point on the  Yucatan Peninsula .

This is a  must-see spot in Isla Mujeres  for its magnificent sea views, but also for its  Sculpture Garden  and the ancient  temple dedicated to Ixchel , the Mayan goddess of the moon and fertility.

And as we are here far from the beaches, there are a lot fewer tourists!

It can be reached through the  Garrafon Natural Park , taking a pretty path facing the Caribbean Sea.

Tips for your Isla Mujeres itinerary: The best time to visit Punta Sur is at dawn because it is one of the first places in Mexico where the sun rises: it’s magic!

4. Relax on One of the Best Beaches in the World

For several years now,  Playa Norte  has been in the  Top 10 of the best beaches in the world  in the Travelers Choice awards  .

With its white sand, calm, warm and shallow water, we quickly understand why!

Indeed the water is so shallow that you can  walk 200m in the water  without having the water above the belt.

It is a 1km public beach with different sections, umbrellas, bars, but also a quieter section with restaurants which is the ideal place for a  family trip to Isla Mujeres .

It must be recognized that the beach is a victim of its notoriety and that it fills up quickly in high season, but it is also  one of the widest beaches in  Mexico  (100m) so it does not feel cramped like elsewhere.

On site, you can rent deckchairs, snorkeling equipment and kayaks.

Seeing the  sun set  behind the water in Playa Norte is a magnificent sight!

For morning people like me, the  sunrise  is also very beautiful, but I recommend  Punta Sur  on the other side of the island instead.

Visit Playa Norte

  • Rental of two chairs with an umbrella 400 pesos per day, or two deckchairs with umbrella for 700 pesos per day (prices vary depending on location)
  • There is a section of the beach where it is allowed to be topless
  • Playa Norte is 500m to the left of the ferry terminal

Part of Playa Norte at Isla Mujeres

5. Take Advantage of Less Touristy Beaches

Playa Norte is  the best known beach in Isla Mujeres , but there are others worth seeing like Playa El Pescador, Playa Tiburon, Playa Paraiso, Playa Na Balam, etc.

At  Playa Pancholo  the sea is choppy and that’s why there’s hardly anyone around. It’s great for sunbathing on the beach, but not for swimming!

Playa Lancheros  is a small beach known for its restaurant serving Tikin Xic fish. It fills up around lunch time so it is better to go there in the morning or from 3 p.m. when it is quiet.

Tips for your Isla Mujeres itinerary: For me, the  best beach in Isla Mujeres  is  Playa Sol . Located right next to Playa Norte, its  water is calm , perfect for swimming or snorkeling. In addition, it is  less crowded  and  less expensive  than Playa Norte!

Playa Lancheros to Isla Mujeres, 1 day in Isla Mujeres

6. Sunbathe at Kin Ha Park

This is a little hidden treasure,  much less crowded  than the Playa Norte area!

Not many people know about it and that’s why it’s a must-see place in Isla Mujeres.

“ El Parque de los Sueños ” also called  Kin Ha  is a beach club that allows you to  make the most  of the island.

It is a small complex facing the Caribbean Sea where there is a restaurant with terrace, an infinity pool with bar, several areas to relax in the sun, as well as easy access to the sea.

On site you can rent  kayaks, paddleboards and  snorkeling  equipment

  • Getting to Kin Ha: 15 min by taxi from the maritime terminal (100$MXN)
  • Open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Entry with a minimum consumption of 500 pesos
  • Kin Ha’s Facebook Page

Kin Ha at Isla Mujeres, Isla Mujeres itinerary

7. Walk in the Streets of Isla Mujeres

Of course,  Isla Mujeres  has more to offer than its beaches! If you have time to wander around a bit, here are some ideas:

-Miguel Hidalgo street  : it is the  main street of Isla Mujeres  which is 3km long, there are shops, many restaurants and bars, live music. You can walk there day and night without any problem!

-See the colors of Isla Mujeres  : and the island has no shortage of them! Between its street art and  its many colorful houses  (special mention to Casa Crayola), it is a feast for the eyes.

-Walk the malecon:  the perfect place to walk from north to south of the island in 40 minutes along the sea. Along the walk, there are several points of interest such as the statue “la Trigue ñ a ” and especially the  colorful sign of Isla Mujeres  (at the intersection of Calle Abasolo) which is the perfect spot to take a photo.

Isla Mujeres itinerary

8. Snorkel in Paradise

With such transparent water and its  Great Mayan Reef  which is the  2nd largest reef in the world,  snorkeling is a must do activity in Isla Mujeres.

To snorkel  in Isla Mujeres without a tower , you can go near the MIA hotel in Playa Norte, but I recommend the beach clubs like Kin Ha, Garrafon de Castilla and especially  Parc Garrafon   which provide the equipment.

On the other hand, taking a  snorkeling tour  allows you to see a lot more things!

El Farito  5 min by boat is the most popular snorkeling spot on the island. It is the smallest lighthouse on Isla Mujeres, surrounded by a reef with fish and corals. There is also the submerged statue of La Virgen del Farito, the patron saint of fishermen.

It is possible to get there with a 1 hour tour, but I recommend the longer tour which also includes part of the Museum of Underwater Art in  Manchones Reef . As it is 30m deep, it is possible to snorkel or dive there.

Isla Mujeres itinerary

9. Diving in Manchones

There are around fifty diving spots in the region for all levels (beginner to advanced).

My best recommendation is to explore the  800m long  Manchones reef at Isla Mujeres with its many corals and fish.

It is part of MUSA,  the largest underwater museum in the world .

With its 473 sculptures 8m underwater, it is definitely the  best place to snorkel in Isla Mujeres !

These statues were created to replace the corals that had disappeared due to pollution mass tourism. It is therefore a second habitat for the biodiversity that inhabits the seabed.

It is impossible to  dive in Manchones  alone, because you need the equipment a boat, so you have to take a tour.

  • You can  book the Manchones diving excursion  here. It includes  snorkeling equipment and boat transport  from  Cancun  to the bay of Isla Mujeres where you can see up to 400 statues!

Isla Mujeres itinerary

10. Taste the Local Mayan specialty

A specialty of Isla Mujeres is  Tikinxik fish : a grilled fish with onions,  achiote  and other spices.

This is a  Mayan cuisine recipe  that I had already tasted during my  visit to Isla Contoy , but I really recommend trying the fish from the restaurant in  Playa Lancheros  or  Playa Tiburon.

It’s a big plate to share (about 290$MXN) with rice and salad.

In addition, the view is very pretty and the waves are calm so it is a perfect place to enjoy Isla  Mujeres with children.

Tips for your Isla Mujeres itinerary: I recommend arriving around 1:30 p.m. to make sure the food is ready and you have to calculate about 30min for the preparation.

Isla Mujeres itinerary

11. Discover Isla Contoy

Just 30km from Isla Mujeres is  Isla Contoy  : one of the most beautiful destinations in Mexico!

This tiny, virtually deserted island is a  national park  that is home to Mexico’s most important Caribbean seabird nesting ground!

Its access is  limited to 200 people per day    so it is very important to book to have the chance to enjoy its calm, fine sandy beaches and transparent water.

The visit to Contoy includes free time on the beach, a small guided tour on its paths (for those who wish) and a good  Tikinxik fish  lunch .

it’s heaven on earth!

Tips for your Isla Mujeres itinerary: Tours to Contoy depart from Cancun or Isla Mujeres around 9am.

For my part, I did a  day trip to Contoy and Isla Mujeres from Cancun,   which can be booked here.

Isla Mujeres itinerary

12. Swim with Whale Sharks

Here is a  great activity to do in Isla Mujeres  while respecting the environment!

From May to September,  whale sharks  come to enjoy the warm waters of Isla Mujeres and  Holbox  and this is an opportunity to observe them a little closer.

Fortunately, they  are protected.  You can swim with whale sharks with a guide by respecting certain rules:

– it is forbidden to dive with them

-we can approach it by swimming or snorkeling  at a safe distance of 2 m

– it is forbidden to touch or feed them

– it is forbidden to jump into the water from a boat

There is nothing to be afraid of. With its 12m in length, the whale shark is  the largest fish in the world , but it is harmless!

  • You can book this   excursion to swim with whale sharks , which also includes pick-up from your Cancun or Riviera Maya hotel , all equipment, free time in Isla Mujeres and lunch.

Isla Mujeres itinerary

13. Encourage Local Craftsmanship

If you want to bring back a  souvenir from Isla Mujeres , I really recommend that you stop by the  cooperative of women artisans of Isla Mujeres  . It’s a very small place where several craftswomen work and sell colorful bracelets, earrings and necklaces.

It’s the best way to encourage the local economy, responsible and at a good price! In addition, they are very nice.

  • Address: L a Gloria MZA. 160 Lot 5, Isla Mujeres.  PageFacebook
  • Outside you will see a sign “The Women’s Bead Cooperative” and “Artesanías de Mujeres de Isla Mujeres”

Isla Mujeres itinerary

14. Take a Catamaran Ride

Catamaran sailing  in Isla Mujeres  is one of the best ways to enjoy the sun and the sea in the Riviera Maya!

It’s a small one-day cruise from  Cancun  with music and  unlimited drinks  (with and without alcohol), perfect for relaxing in a festive atmosphere.

The tour takes you  snorkeling  in the reef (1h), offers  free time  at Isla Mujeres and  includes lunch  on the beach.

The right plan I recommend  this catamaran tour to Isla Mujeres from Cancun . It has the advantage of including transport from your hotel (which is not always the case!) and at a very good price.  Easy to book here.

Isla Mujeres itinerary

15. Mundaka Estate

Built by the “retired” pirate Fermin Mundaca in 1862, Hacienda  Mundaca  or  Hacienda Vista Alegre  at the time covered almost half of the island and was surrounded by beautiful gardens.

He dedicated it to a local beauty nicknamed the “trigueña” to convince her to marry him. but despite everything she decided to marry another.

Today you can visit what remains of the hacienda with its gardens, part of the house, some sculptures, cannons and a pond. There are also iguanas that roam around.

  • Admission 30$MXN, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the visit lasts 20-30 min
  • Located 300m from Playa Lancheros

To know The hacienda is temporarily closed.

16. Go fishing

It is possible to  fish in Isla Mujeres , on the coast and offshore, but there are several things to consider:

It is not easy to fish on the coast of Isla Mujeres: there are a lot of rocks, and in addition to swimmers and snorkeling areas, you have to be very careful not to fish in the reefs because they are  protected .

On the coast, there are mainly barracuda, other species such as yellowtail. Instead of mahi mahi, sarda, king mackerel, etc.

The best season to fish off Isla Mujeres is from January until the end of June.

Tips for your Isla Mujeres itinerary:

In Mexico it is not  necessary to have a license  to fish on the coast, but you must be  200m from swimmers . To fish from a boat (even a kayak) it is absolutely necessary  to have a permit .

It is best to go with a guide, whether on the coast or offshore. When renting a fishing boat, the  captain includes the license in the price .

Fishing in Isla Mujeres represents a certain budget: around 200$usd for 4h or 400$USD to 2000$USD for 8h offshore fishing (it all depends on the type of boat, etc.)

17. See the Cemetery

I am always surprised by the  colorful graves in Mexican cemeteries.

The  Isla Mujeres cemetery  may be an unusual visit for some, but I really enjoyed discovering it with its many shades of blue, flowers, candles and various sometimes original monuments.

There is also the  tomb of Fermin Mundaca  (remember, that of the  Hacienda Mundaca ?). We recognize her by the skull in reference to her years of piracy.

It is to the right of the entrance, but it is empty! Because he died in Mérida and was never repatriated to the island.

Isla Mujeres itinerary

18. Visit the Turtle Sanctuary

The totugranja,  or the turtle farm, is a must-see place of interest in Isla Mujeres.

It is not  a place of exploitation of turtles  where we swim with them, but a place of preservation!

There are sea and land turtles, as well as an aquarium with fish and several marine species.

Isla Mujeres is an important  nesting ground for giant tortoises  between May and September. They are now protected by the government and their eggs are placed in a safe place away from predators.

Small turtles are placed in tanks and then local school children and travelers help  return them to their natural martin habitat .

Thus, several thousand turtles are saved each year!

  • Admission 30$MXN, the visit is short, but it’s a good cause
  • Highway Sac Bajo Km 5, Mar Turquesa subdivision, Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres itinerary

19. Treat Yourself to a Yoga Session

There are several  yoga studios in Isla Mujeres,  but the  Treehouse  is my favorite because sessions are on a loft facing  Playa Norte .

It’s the perfect place to wake up gently to the sound of the waves of the Caribbean Sea.

Classes are Monday to Saturday at 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., and Wednesday to Saturday at 6 p.m.

I recommend especially in the morning because there is hardly anyone on the beach and it is very quiet.

Isla Mujeres itinerary

20. The Isla Mujeres Museum

This is the  only museum on Isla Mujeres , and of course, it’s a maritime museum!

The  Capitan Dulche Museum  features explorers Ramon Bravo, Jacques Cousteau and Ernesto Dulché Escalante. There are photographs, several beautiful ship models, anchors and various maritime objects related to the island.

In addition to the museum, there is a  beach club  with a restaurant and a bar, a volleyball court, a swimming pool, small cabins and deckchairs on the beach.

  • The museum is free
  • Facebook page of Captain Dulché

To know The museum is temporarily closed.

Isla Mujeres itinerary

21. Dolphin Discovery

Here is an  activity to absolutely avoid in Isla Mujeres .

Entertainment giant Dolphin Discovery offers overpriced packages to swim with dolphins and take photos with them.

It is not an eco-responsible activity, quite the contrary. Dolphins are  kept in  captivity  like circus animals.

Unfortunately it is one of the most popular activities on Isla Mujeres with families. Make a difference and do not participate in this kind of activity.

If you like animals, why not  see them in their natural habitat ?

Swimming with whale sharks  is done with respect for the species. Another responsible option is to  swim with the turtles in Akumal !

Getting to Isla Mujeres

I do not recommend  arriving without a reservation at Isla Mujeres . Prices go up easily and everything fills up quickly.

Here are my top accommodation recommendations for all types of budgets.

  • Nomads Hotel Hostel & Beachclub  :  a superb hotel  facing the sea , beautifully decorated, with swimming pool, hammocks, bar and terrace. Beautiful  rooms from 130€,  but what surprises are the  dormitories at only 23€ per night!
  • Posada Paso del Sol  : here is a small hotel with a  very good quality-price ratio for Isla Mujeres  . Clean, comfortable bed, good location very close to the ferry, Playa Norte and restaurants.  From only 65€ per night!
  • Privilege Aluxes – Adults Only  : for more comfort, here is a magnificent  all-inclusive hotel in Isla Mujeres , reserved for adults. Located on a fine sandy beach very close to Playa Norte, it has 2 swimming pools, 2 restaurants, a bar on the beach, a spa, rooms with air conditioning and king size beds.  From €252 per night or €325 per night all inclusive!
  • Mia Reef Isla Mujeres Resort  : as we say in English:  location, location, location ! Indeed, the  unique location  of the MIA Reef is what makes its reputation. Located on Islote El Yunque, it is surrounded by water and has a  private beach  in addition to a swimming pool, bar and restaurant. The hotel is  less luxurious  than the Privilege Aluxes, but  welcomes children  (there’s even a daycare service and a game room).  From €266 per night all inclusive!

How to travel cheap to Isla Mujeres

Personally, I prefer to watch my budget to travel more often!

If you’re like me, here are all my tips for  visiting Isla Mujeres at a low price  :

-The  cheapest way to get to Puerto Juarez  from the hotel zone of  Cancun  is the  R-1 (red) bus  which leaves you  right here  close to the landing stage. 12$mxn the ticket.

-To avoid buying drinks on the beach, it is best to  buy everything  (water, drinks, snacks) at the  Oxxo  at the Maritima terminal in Cancun or at the one in Isla Mujeres, on the left when disembarking.

-It is quite possible to go to  Playa Norte without paying for a deckchair . Same thing in  Playa Sol  and it is easier to find a place in the shade under the palm trees! Remember to bring beach towels, a hat and sunscreen as the sun is strong.

-To  eat cheap in Isla Mujeres , it is best to avoid the beach. The municipal market is always a good option, otherwise I found that the restaurant El Poc Chuc (corner Avenida Juarez and Calle Abasolo) was really good with big  sandwiches  (tortas) at only 35-40$MXN.

-To sleep cheap in Isla Mujeres  I recommend without hesitation the superb  Nomads youth hostel  with its dormitories at  9 € per night . Otherwise  Mi Alegria Studio  is another very good option with wifi, air conditioning and a small kitchen with fridge  at only 20 € per night !

-Sometimes taking a  tour is cheaper  than visiting solo. This is the case of Isla Mujeres! In Puerto Juarez, I recommend taking a  tour to Isla Mujeres with the local cooperative .

For MXN$500, it’s an  all-inclusive tour to Isla Mujeres  from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. that includes: MXN$50 harbor fee, boat transport, 2 hours of free time at Isla Mujeres, snorkeling at El Farito and the lunch (fish or chicken tikinxik).

Depleted South Isla Mujeres

The car is not the ideal way to get around because there are not many parking spaces on the island.

The best options are the  bicycle , or the  golf cart  and  scooter  if you prefer a motorized vehicle.

The golf cart to Isla Mujeres costs an average of MXN$850 for the day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  It is important to have your driver’s license .

There are several rental companies and the prices go down the further you get from the wharf. Avoid touts when disembarking from the ferry: they take a commission.

Note that it is also possible to have the golf cart “delivered” to your hotel in Isla Mujeres.

The island is quite small, so it is quite possible to discover it  on foot . But the sun is strong so it is better to start the day early in the morning and wear a cap or a hat!

How long to visit Isla Mujeres

Many travelers make  1 day to Isla Mujeres from Cancun , but one can easily spend  2 or 3 days in Isla Mujeres  to better enjoy the beach.

1 Day Isla Mujeres Itinerary

The vast majority of people stay in Playa Norte because you can find everything there (restaurants, deckchairs, etc.).

But if you prefer to see a little more of the island here  is what to do in Isla Mujeres in 1 day  :

-In the morning, take the  ferry to Isla Mujeres –  Book your ferry tickets here !

-Rent a golf cart or a bike to go to  Parc Garrafon de Castilla  and spend the morning there (snorkeling, relaxing, swimming)

-Walk around  Punta Sur  to see Sculpture Park and Ixchel Temple

-Go to Playa Lancheros for lunch the famous  Tikin Xic fish

-Go to  Playa Norte , the most famous beach on the island

-It is possible to do a  snorkeling tour at Farito , but you have to wait for a group of 4+ to be formed (easy in high season)

-See the  sunset  at Playa Norte or Playa Sol next door

-Before leaving, you can take a walk on the lively  Avenida Higaldo

Getting from Cancun Airport to Isla Mujeres

It is easy to get to Isla Mujeres from the Cancun airport (Terminal 2 for international flights).

You have to get to Puerto Juarez  first . Here are the different options:

  • By taxi  : the advantages are that there is no waiting time and the journey is direct, but it is the most expensive option.
  • By bus  : ADO buses leave every 30 minutes and go to the center of Cancun. Tickets can be purchased on site at the ADO counter, around 90$MXN. Then you have to go from the center of Cancun to Puerto Juarez, by taxi (about $90 MNX) or cheaper, with bus 13.
  • By public transport  : colectivos (shared taxis) are the cheapest option, but you have to wait for the van to fill up. Also, it is not guaranteed that there are people going there at the same time. But you can still try before taking the bus.

Going from Cancun to Isla Mujeres by Ferry

To go to Isla Mujeres, you have to  take the ferry from Cancun.

There are different piers:

-Puerto Juarez   : just 3km from the center, there are 2 piers practically stuck together, the most recent of which with the best boats is called Gran Puerto. 30 min journey with Ultramar, departure every 30 min between 5 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., then every hour until 11:30 p.m. The ferry to Isla Mujeres from Puerto Juarez costs MXN$160 or MXN$300 return.

Spaces on the ferry are very limited, I strongly recommend that you  reserve them as soon as possible!

To book  your return ferry ticket to Isla Mujeres  (return valid for 6 months after your outbound date), click here.

-Cancun hotel zone  : there are 3 piers with the Ultramar company – Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol, El Embarcadero (Playa Linda). Ferry schedules  to Isla Mujeres see here .  The ferry from the piers in the hotel zone is more expensive than from Puerto Juarez – 15$USD or 21$USD round trip.

From Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres

To go from  Playa del Carmen  to the Cancun ferry, the trip takes 1 hour either by bus or by car.

If you don’t have a rental car, you can either take  private transport  (around 500-600$MXN one way) or the  bus.

I recommend the  ADO bus  which leaves every 15 minutes from Terminal Alterna in Playa del Carmen for 80$MXN. Be careful to  choose the right arrival terminal  and not the one at Cancun airport!

Once you arrive at  Terminal ADO in Cancun , it is possible to take a taxi to  Puerto Juarez  ($100 MXN) or a Ruta 1 bus which passes in front of the station.

Can we bring luggage on the ferry?

Yes, the ticket includes 1 piece of luggage up to 25kg max. Sizes: 45 x 70 x 27cm

Watch out for scams at the pier

In Puerto Juarez, it happens that you are approached saying that the ferry has been canceled (which is not true) to take you to private transport.

Transportation is real and does get to Isla Mujeres fine, but it’s way  more expensive and longer than the ferry .

Can we cross by ferry with a car?

There is little parking on Isla Mujeres, so it is not ideal to get there by car, but yes it is possible.

The only place to  take the ferry with a car  is  Punta Sam , 8km from Cancun.

It takes about  45 minutes to get  to Isla Mujeres. I really recommend arriving 1 hour in advance!

-Departures with  Maritima:  5:15 a.m., 8:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 2:15 p.m., 5:15 p.m., 8:15 p.m., 482$MXN, included with passengers

-Departures with  Ultramar:  see Ultramar Carga schedules here , 400$MXN includes up to 4 people per vehicle.

Is there parking at the Cancun Ferry?

Yes there is a large multi-storey parking lot in Puerto Juarez.

The rate is 11$MXN per hour, there are also daily rates.

It is also possible to find free parking in the area (on the street).

Choose Isla Mujeres or Holbox?

I am often asked which is the best, but they are  completely different!

There are  more activities to do in Isla Mujeres,  more restaurants and shops, so it’s a great place for friends, couples and families alike.

But there are also  a lot more tourists , there is a lot of hustle and bustle during the day since the majority come on a tour from Cancun.

We do not come to Isla Mujeres to rest in peace, but to enjoy the sun in a more festive atmosphere.

Even though Holbox has grown in recent years, it is still  much less touristy than Isla Mujeres . The roads are dirt, the atmosphere is very relaxed and even a bit hippie, with small hotels.

There are  long sandy beaches  with few people, however there are more mosquitoes and when it rains, the roads can flood.

  • To learn more about Holbox:  here is my complete guide to the island !

Isla Mujeres itinerary

Money in Isla Mujeres

The US dollar is accepted in Isla Mujeres, but the exchange rate is not favorable:  it is better to pay with Mexican pesos .

It is possible to change up to 300$USD per day (with passport) at HSBC, Banamex, Banco Azteca or CI Bank.

There are several automatic teller machines (ATM) where it is possible to withdraw pesos. It is important to only use  the counters inside the banks .

There are unfortunately a lot of cases of card fraud on the island, so I really recommend only using the  credit card to pay for the hotel.

Safety at Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is safe and there is a police presence in the streets, but there are, like everywhere (and especially tourist destinations!), skilled pickpockets.

You must therefore be vigilant: do not leave your bag unattended, do not leave valuables (eg camera) in the golf cart, etc.

When to go to Isla Mujeres

The  high season  runs from November to April: it is dry and the temperature is around 25C

The  low season  is from June to October: risk of hurricanes, heavier rains, very humid

The best time to go to Isla Mujeres is from December to February.

As an example, the temperature in Isla Mujeres in January is 19C up to 28C on average
