Among other buzzworthy tracks are Paradise, featuring Timberlake’s former boy band crew ’N Sync. Other guest turns include Fireboy, DML and Tobe Nwigwe. Everything I Thought It Was is the followup to 2018’s Man of the Woods. That album debuted in the Billboard Canadian and U.S. Top 200 album chart in the top spot.

By comparison, Everything I Thought I Was entered the same chart at number 17 . The review aggregator site Metacritic delivered a score of 51 based on 17 reviews. Not exactly a superstar point spread, but maybe Maria Sherman of AP News had it right when assessing the new album as “an enjoyable — if often derivative — reminder of Timberlake at the height of his powers.”

Given that those powers made Timberlake a household name back in the day, there is little doubt that the singer still has a formidable live draw.

The Forget Tomorrow World Tour has featured segments with Timberlake’s expanded 11-piece band the Tennessee Kids, as well as DJ Andrew Hypes. There is no opening act announced for the Vancouver performance.

Here are five things you need to know before JT kicks off his latest road show at Rogers Arena on April 29.

1 — Sexyback vs. Selfish : In the smash single Sexyback from 2006’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, JT delights in giving himself up to his lover: You see these shackles baby/ I’m you’re slave/ I’ll let you whip me/ If I misbehave.” On Selfish, he is reduced to admitting that his toxic levels of masculine jealousy are, y’know, not so rad: I want every bit of you/ I guess I’m selfish/ It’s bad for my mental/ But I can’t fight it. Sorry, but that kind of lyrical turn only brings creepy back.

2 — ’N Sync return? : In long ago times, the boy band battle between the Backstreet Boys and ’N Sync was often neck-in-neck. As time wore on, it became pretty clear that the Backstreet Boys kept finding new fans . Better Place, the first new track from ’N Sync in over two decades, featured in the 2023 film Trolls Band Together. It kind of vanished in the soundtrack along with strictly JT-fuelled numbers like Brozone’s Back and Perfect. Paradise, the new ’N Sync collab from Everything I Thought doesn’t appear in reported set lists for this present tour. Is ’N Sync coming back?

3 — Trolls tour? : What is making it into the tour is Can’t Stop the Feeling! The big number from 2016’s Trolls soundtrack. With its accompanying official video, the feel-good song is about as family-friendly as any Timberlake has released. Maybe a Trolls tour is in the works? What could be better than a product tie-in that dates back to most people’s grandparents’ childhood with a pitch man from the parents’ era on to today’s 20-somethings and their children?

4 — Man out of the Woods : Timberlake’s last album, Man of the Woods, was pumped up as a rootsy turn from the Tennessee-born former Mouseketeer. It turned out to be another platinum-selling release from the singer, but hardly the pre-emptive strike into the exploding world of country music that it could have been. That said, this critic noted that the performance was yet another upbeat, dance-a-thonic production from Timberlake . Fans are likely looking forward to a plaid-free, fake campfire-free experience that’s heavy on suits and style — and they appear to be getting just that.

5 — JT docu-something : Actor and filmmaker Fisher Stevens, who recently appeared in both Succession and Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, directed Timberlake in the 2021 Apple+ drama Palmer. He has gone on the record about filming some of the shows on the Everything I Thought I Was tour for a possible movie or docuseries on the singer. Given the popularity of music series ranging from Jon Batiste’s American Symphony to the Kid Laroi’s The Kids Grow Up, and films such as the Amy Winehouse story told in Back to Black and Bob Marley: One Love, it makes sense.

LD Nick Whitehouse and Fireplay Illuminate the MOTW Path

The Man of the Woods tour, Justin Timberlake’s sixth journey around the world, is now in its third leg, back in North America where the production launched a year ago, kicking off a few weeks after Timberlake’s Super Bowl LII halftime show. LD Nick Whitehouse and his Fireplay partners are at the helm of the production design for the ongoing tour.

Timberlake and Whitehouse have been working together after the two first crossed paths at a Coldplay show in Japan. Timberlake attended the show, liked what he saw, and they have been collaborating on looks for close to 15 years now.

Nick Whitehouse combined audience light with stage design to create the immersive effect Timberlake wanted.

Fireplay, formed by Whitehouse and his partners in 2017, served as the creative producers for the overall MOTW production, including video, lighting and set. “Justin had a concept and a general aesthetic about where he wanted it to go,” says Whitehouse. “The main thing was following up his Man of the Woods release, and he wanted to have the elements of playing a 360-degrees environment.”

Timberlake enjoyed what Nick and other collaborators had achieved on his previous world tour, the Nov. 2013-to-Jan. 2015 trek supporting the artist’s 20/20 Experience albums, where Timberlake performed in close proximity to his audience, reinforcing his connection with fans and enhancing the environment for both the performer and audiences.

“For MOTW , we wanted to bring an organic, really cool, never-before-seen, one-of-a-kind stage that wrapped all the way through the arena,” says Whitehouse. “Everything else layered on that.”

justin timberlake motw tour

Timberlake also wanted to be able to perform in the middle of the arena, which meant a separate performance space from the main stage needed to be created, as the idea of a standard in-the-round stage was never considered.

These conversations took place about a year before the tour when the Fireplay team sat down with JT. The design started with the stage footprint. Nick explains, “JT is originally from Memphis, so our production designer Josh Zangen went away and thought about what he could take from that environment — the woods and Memphis.” What Zangen presented to the team was a stage layout based on the flood plain map of the Mississippi River as it runs through Memphis, with all its curves and different elevations.

“Once we had that established, determining how to bring video into the production was the next step,” says Whitehouse. “The team researched a lot of different materials and “out there” ways to bring an organic shape to the stage and incorporate all those curves.

The determining factor presented itself when the specifics of how to pull this off as a live production that has to move between venues all the time. “We hit upon the roll drops as the solution,” says Whitehouse. “We took our drawings to Tait and they delivered the final product.”

The 36 Tait roll drops were there from the beginning, outlining the shape of the stage. 36 Barco UDX-4K32 provided the projection that the lighting design would incorporate as well as work around the translucent screens.

‡‡         Lighting

Flying above the main stage is a large piece of artwork, which Tait constructed. It looks like a form of hieroglyphics representing the Man of the Woods logo. The emblem acted as a focal point and anchor to the main stage. The majority of the lights for the main stage, Claypaky Unicos, are on the “logo truss.”

“I wanted something with an enormous beam for the opening effect,” says Whitehouse, “and also have gobos; mixing color and really good optics so we could go from super sharp pin beams to the full arena rig. The Unico was the obvious choice. It’s one of those multi-purpose, really bright, really punchy fixtures.”

Above the main stage, a few trusses are hung with Vari-Lite VL4000 spots. These are key lights. Their only function is to light the 16 piece band, the six dancers or Timberlake, when he is on the main stage behind roll drops.

All the lighting and video was supplied by Solotech, as were the 140 motors to hang those elements.

“It was hard to light around a lot of the projection, though I love the roll drops,” laughs Whitehouse. “We had to use key light from a lot of positions for that reason. Add in the fact the audience was all around the stage, so we couldn’t just light him or any performers from the front, as on a normal stage. The VL4000 has a good quality output, and we made all the players look great.”

Whitehouse chose GLP’s JDC1 fixtures for their capabilities as a strobe and as big color washes.” I spread them throughout the rig,” notes Whitehouse. “The fact they can tilt means we can do some really cool effects either lighting the stage or the audience.”

justin timberlake motw tour

The Robe Spikie also has a huge presence in the design, with more than 300 in the rig. “I needed a really small light that could fit in the roll drop trusses to give me beam effects and key light,” Whitehouse explains. “We actually took a little bit of a gamble on the Spikies. Most people use them as an effect light. We used them as everything,” including as a “key light.”

Vari-Lite VL3015 fixtures were used all along the dasher line. These brought out the audience lighting all around the arena. Whitehouse also uses them for audience effects and to help paint a larger scene on camera, so there is not just a black hole when highlighting a performer. “I’ve been using it for years and have to say, it is still my go-to fixture for that job.

“We also have a couple of trusses around the arena that have four banks of Claypaky Scenius Unicos on them, which are programmed into the Follow Me system to spotlight JT throughout the show,” Whitehouse adds. “I use the Unico’s because they look great and are fast enough to keep up with the system.”

Tait automation “grows grass” from beneath the stage. Photo by Ralph Larmann

‡‡         Automation

The show contains a lot of animation built by Tait and operated through their Navigator system. The effects range from the 36 video roll drops to elevation lifts beneath the main stage for exits and entrances, to risers that rotate so the band can play to and face the entire arena at one point or another.

The upstage catwalk is automated to reveal a wall of backlights. At certain points, it drops four feet to reveal the racks of lights so Whitehouse is able to have a back wall of lighting providing some amazing effects. A total of 180 lights travel in the racks. “The way Solotech built them is really ingenious,” he says. “They simply roll into position and flip up off their wheels.”

An integral part of the show is the campfire moment. “That scene is one of those things that became so important, we knew there could never be a show without the fire scene,” says Kelly Sticksel, Fireplay’s SFX designer. “We didn’t want to go down the road of using a silk fire. We knew it had to be actual flames and heat. We engineered something that had never been done before with a dual fuel system. Many venues won’t allow propane inside their building, so we developed a system that would also burn butane cylinders.”

On the campfire stage are a couple of lifts for entrances, exits and to put the campfire in place. But even more intriguing are the blades of grass that appear in performance space. Tait’s automation has a mechanism that actually pushes up blades of grass through the stage. “We grow grass with help from all the automation in that little deck,” Whitehouse smiles.

“The whole campfire scene is an effort to contrast this super high gloss black stage and technology by adding those elements that make it JT’s Man of the Woods show,” he adds.

‡‡         Lasers

Strictly FX provided the laser system and control, which is self-contained and operated separately from the grandMA. Kelly Sticksel, the laser designer and one of Whitehouse’s partners from Fireplay, cited the need for a separate control setup on the sheer number of effects, “and how complicated it was to program them. We knew it was really going to be intricate and timed. All the lasers do slightly different things, so it made sense for FX to program separately.” The 40 lasers in the grid range from 6W to 30W.

One of Whitehouse’s favorite moments in the show happens with lasers and Timberlake’s mic stand. “That piece is choreographed almost down to the millisecond,” Whitehouse says. “It was a lot of fun creating it, and Justin was really hands on, sitting with us, going through the programming and changing audio tracks to make it work visually. It was a fantastic experience, which took a week to program, believe it or not! In the 10-second performance, there are 150 cues.” Whitehouse credits Sticksel for “an incredible job making that come together.”

‡‡         Transitions

Partially into the tour, between the first North American leg and the European show dates last year, Solotech was asked by production to supply a disguise gx2 4K option, according to Lee Moro, account rep for Solotech. The design team was in need of doing some things with their 4K footage that they were unable to achieve without going to disguise for the best solution.

“We had the disguise people on board helping us and we put it together very quickly. It was a seamless transition with noticeable improvement in the operation and final output. Everybody was very pleased with the outcome. The next leg started without a hitch and the video was now running flawlessly. Kudos to disguise for stepping in with support.”

The Follow Me lighting tracking system Fireplay implemented came with a few technical hurdles due to the size and shape of the stage. Tait and Fireplay were very faithful to recreating the Mississippi floodplain so the elevation of the deck that routes through the audience changes just as the topography of the real river. Follow Me wrote a program that added a “Z” plane to account for these changes. “I believe, at the time, this was the largest scale project that Follow Me had done with different elevations,” says Moro.

“Every project has its uniqueness,” he adds. “This was just one of many, and the Follow Me people came through with great support and it is running smoothly out there. Though I have managed this project for Solotech for several years, Richard Lachance, our leader, who started the international touring division for Solotech, has had a relationship with the Justin team and Fireplay for a long time. He is the guy who put this together on the business side and helped with the creative side of things to get what the production needed. Without him, none of this would be possible. I feel sure Nick [Whitehouse], “Hydro” [Robert Mullin, production manager] and tour accountant Dan McGee would agree with that statement.”

justin timberlake motw tour

‡‡         Moments

“In every show you have to have the huge moments, but you also have to have the tiny moments where your senses can kind of recover before you build back up again,” says Whitehouse. “The Fireplay team had to exercise a bit of restraint building the effects for those moments because the instinct of a lighting designer is to follow the music, but for many moments, it’s more about the art that happens.

For the song “Cry Me a River” the creative team used low fog created from custom nitrogen tanks. As this fog rolled along the stage ramp that is the Mississippi flood plain, Whitehouse designed a simple chase that created the illusion of water flowing using the Robe Spikies positioned above the runway in a continuous line. “I was very impressed by the Spikies. They give a lot of light output for their size, and they hold their own against all the projection. For a 60-watt light, that is really impressive.”

justin timberlake motw tour

Projection onto the roll drop screens looked like tiny white particles in the air subtly moving in reaction to the music. The idea for this look came from the way camera filters were used to create what were once known as beauty lights. “Using the technology we had,” “we made it look like the people where being animated, but it’s just a trick with projection,” says Whitehouse. “It is a simple thing, but a statement piece.”

Therein lies the “Magic of Theatre.”

justin timberlake motw tour

“We run a lot of the show on timecode,” states Whitehouse.” It is such a big show with so many cues that it’s a lot simpler to timecode it. Some of these songs have a thousand-plus cues in three minutes. Timecode ensures everything is just spot on. However, it is programmed, so it can be run manually. I have Brian Vaughan, who is the lighting director out there, run the show manually every now and then so that he goes through it.”

The production places cameras mostly in the seats, along with a couple of hand-helds with really well experienced operators. The show is tightly choreographed and scripted as to where these shots are taken from. “We integrate all the I-Mag and all the shots into the content and use it for effect” says Whitehouse,” then drive it through Notch and through d3 [disguise]. It’s very important that the shots are right for these effects to work, and I think the guys pull this off very well every night.”

Before the doors open on the first show of the tour, Timberlake has put his eyes and ears on every single moment of the upcoming 90-minute performance. “He’s very involved, which is a joy and a challenge for us,” says Sticksel. “It’s our job to take his music which reflects who he is and where he is at this certain time of his life and present it in a way that puts his stamp on it.”

“In fact,” says Whitehouse, “there are times when he has sat with us at 2 a.m., running through a cue-to-cue with us, letting us know what he likes and what he doesn’t. He’ll even suggest changing up the music so it will flow better with a scene.”

Whitehouse’s design process begins for all his projects by looking at the moments he’s going to light inside the bigger production, noting that the way Timberlake works, “where everyone can have an opinion, and everyone can come to the table and bring what they do best into this little room. It’s not really a roundtable discussion so much as it is collaboration. It all starts with the vision of the stage and what we want to do,” says Whitehouse.

From Fireplay, the four leads were on the project full time for a lot of hours before anything even got into building. “It’s a very definite process,” agrees Sticksel — “one that is really fun to watch, be a part of and full of challenging rewards.”

The end results on the stage hold up through the smoke and mirrors. “It’s his show alright; it’s got his stamp on it,” says Whitehouse. “It starts with the little scenes. Everything comes back from that.”

Justin Timberlake kicks off #MOTW tour in Toronto Back to video

Tuesday night

RATING: **** (four outta five)

The Memphis-born Justin Timberlake is a Man Of the Woods on his 2018 album of the same name.

But on Tuesday night, as Timberlake launched his latest tour with the first of two nights at the Air Canada Centre, the 37-year-old singer-songwriter-producer was more like a man of the catwalk.

Make that a long, winding, snake-like all-black catwalk decorated with a few trees that extended from the main stage at one end of the arena all the way to the back of the floor at the other end.

#JustinTimberlake and his dancers head down the snake like catwalk for filthy at opening of #MOTWTour toronto pic.twitter.com/5AbLjZyAnj — Jane Stevenson (@JaneCStevenson) March 14, 2018

It was where Timberlake, his six dancers and massive Tennessee Kids band spent the majority of their time over the course of a slick, dance-happy, two-hour show, much to the delight of the people on the floor.

For those of us in the stands, it also made the cavernous ACC seem more intimate.

Sadly, given all that time spent there, it was dark and dimly lit, but Timberlake mostly made up for that with gorgeous visuals projected on scrims that descended from above him all night long onto which woods, a starry sky with a crescent moon, and the handsome, charismatic singer himself were seen in all their glory.

Timberlake seemed particularly stoked to be launching his latest trek in “The 6ix” or “The North” as he alternately called Toronto to big cheers, while handing out shots on a tray to his crew on the catwalk mid-show to celebrate opening night.

“Here’s to mf Drake!” he added during his toast, to even more screams from the crowd.

“We are thrilled to be here with the first night of our Man of the Woods tour!”

Opening the evening with the new song Filthy, Timberlake stood out best when he delved further back in his catalogue that now covers five solo albums starting with SexyBack and continuing with Senorita, Suit & Tie, Cry Me A River (with those scrims lighting up with beautiful, flowing light effects), Mirrors and Drink You Away.

Then it was time to slow things down a bit and literally sing around the campfire at the back of the catwalk.

Timberlake strummed an acoustic guitar and let his backup singers handle lead vocals on such covers as Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams, Lauryn Hill’s Ex-factor, The Beatles’ Come Together and John Denver’s Thank God I’m A Country Boy.

I enjoyed his generosity and then it was time to break out the dance moves again for What Goes Around … Comes Around, highlight the two best new songs Say Something and Montana, and end the show with such older crowd-pleasers as Rock Your Body and Can’t Stop The Feeling!

Timberlake returns for a second night at the ACC on Thursday night and has added a third show on Oct. 9.

I went to Justin Timberlake’s concert at Irving Plaza and it felt like the early aughts

The Grammy Award-winning entertainer sang old favorites and debuted new music in NYC last night.

Anna Rahmanan

Last night, I joined hundreds of Justin Timberlake fans in celebrating the former NSYNC member’s 43rd birthday at Irving Plaza, where he performed a one-night-only concert of, mostly, greatest hits that felt like a trip back to the early aughts.

Outside the Union Square ballroom-style music venue, hundreds of hopefuls stood in the cold for a chance to magically gain access to the arena, which was basically on lockdown: there was no way to get in without a ticket.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by *NSYNC UK LOVE | MAGZ 🇬🇧 (@nsync_uklove)

Tensions ran high upon entry as well: the space was filled with New York’s influencer elite peppered with a slew of lucky fans who were able to secure passes through a lottery. For two hours, everyone pretended to be famous by just being there—and it was pretty awesome.

Whether it was the intimate venue, the average age of audience members (“it’s my birthday, too, and this was my only plan,” read a sign held up by a 40-something woman in the crowd), the setlist—filled with tracks released in the early 2000s—or the fact that Timberlake will always don an aura of nostalgia given his rise to fame as the frontman of an iconic ‘90s boy band, the unique concert experience was akin to diving back into the era of cargo pants, tracksuits, all denim everything and baguette bags: the Y2K aesthetic was on fleek.

If it weren’t for the myriad of iPhones taking high-res videos throughout the night and reminding me that we are living in 2024, I would have bet money that Timberlake and his wife Jessica Biel—who, at one point, appeared on stage with a cake, leading the crowd into a heartfelt rendition of the “happy birthday” song—would end the evening at the formerly nearby and now defunct Coffee Shop, where celebrities of their caliber used to regularly hang out.

Following a 45-minute DJ set that included throwbacks by Eve, Destiny’s Child and Madonna, among others, Timberlake walked on stage singing “Sanctified,” a track off his new album “Everything I Thought it Was,” his first since the 2018 release of “Man of the Woods ,”  scheduled to drop on March 15.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Gabriela Acosta (@timberlakes.mx)

The evening continued with old favorites—”SexyBack!” “Like I Love You!” “Suit & Tie!” “Mirrors!” “Cry Me a River!”—and music from the Trolls soundtrack, the animated movie that Timberlake stars in and has helped open up the Timberlake universe to a whole new set of younger devotees.

My personal favorite moment of the night came courtesy of the singer's own rendition of Frank Sinatra's glorious "New York, New York,” which smoothly transitioned into a performance of the 2003 hit "Señorita," with Timberlake himself on the piano.

A true showman, the artist gave fans what they were craving midway through the show when he walked down towards the crowd, sang portions of “Gone” and “Girlfriend,” two NSYNC fans’ go-to’s, and debuted a new tune, “My Favorite Drug,” which—spoiler alert!—is the exact sound that Timberlake tends to stellarly dance to.

It was, indeed, a night to remember.

Couldn’t snag tickets? Worry not! Timberlake just announced his 'Forget Tomorrow' world tour and is expected to take on the stage at  Madison Square Garden on June 25 and June 26. Here is how to get tickets to the summer shows.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Billboard’s Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century: No. 14 — Justin Timberlake

Few artists this century have reached the heights of chart success and (eventually) critical acclaim that Timberlake scaled over the '00s and early '10s.

Trending on Billboard

But Timberlake’s transition from one-fifth of a blockbuster boy band to solo superstardom was never guaranteed. For every Michael Jackson, there are dozens of… well, we won’t name names, but for most boy banders, the group is the beginning and end of their success story. Timberlake was able to be the exception to the pop rule by choosing the exact right time to strike out on his own, and he had the most epic launch pad possible in the turn-of-the-millennium juggernaut that was *NSYNC.

Justin Timberlake

That perception was obliterated when *NSYNC’s new millennium kicked off with the January 2000 release of the top five Hot 100 hit “Bye Bye Bye,” leading up to March’s No Strings Attached – which marked not just their biggest album debut yet, but the biggest album debut of all time , selling an unprecedented 2.4 million copies in its first week (setting a record that held for 15 years, until Adele’s 25 ); topping the Billboard 200 for eight weeks; and producing the group’s lone Hot 100 No. 1 in “It’s Gonna Be Me.”

One giant album led to another, with *NSYNC returning the next year with 2001’s Celebrity , their second Billboard 200 No. 1, which saw Timberlake’s introduction as the group’s true star. While Timberlake and Chasez had shared lead vocals on every song to that point, there was a solo showcase on Celebrity that painted the picture of what was to come: “Gone” found JT – who traded his famous ramen-noodle curls for a bad-boy buzzcut – singing every verse (showing off his vocal range, from a gravelly baritone to a floating falsetto) and starring front and center in the black-and-white music video , backed by his groupmates for lush harmonies on the chorus. Another sign of Timberlake’s future: Celebrity ’s breakout hit “Girlfriend,” *NSYNC’s first foray into hip-hop-flavored pop and a Hot 100 top five hit, included a guest verse from Nelly and production by The Neptunes, foreshadowing the core sound JT would pursue on his solo debut.

Justin Timberlake

The beginning of the end for *NSYNC arrived in April 2002, when the Celebrity Tour, the group’s fourth and (so far) final trek, wrapped up and was followed by an indefinite hiatus. Also in the spring of 2002: Timberlake broke up with Spears – meaning his public identity as both a boy bander and Britney’s boyfriend were behind him as he headed into the summer 2002 creation of his debut solo album, Justified . For the 13-track set, he reunited with The Neptunes on seven cuts and connected with hip-hop heavyweight Timbaland for the first time on four songs. Just four months after pressing pause on *NSYNC, JT’s debut solo single, the Neptunes-produced “Like I Love You,” arrived in September 2002, followed by the Nov. 5 release of the full album.

“Like I Love You” peaked just outside the Hot 100 top 10, and Justified debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 – but the heat around Timberlake’s budding solo stardom had just started boiling. The Timbaland-produced “Cry Me a River” came next, climbing all the way to No. 3 on the Hot 100 by memorably mining the Britney breakup, fueling cheating rumors and deploying a Spears doppelganger in its eyebrow-raising music video. JT scored two more top 40 Hot 100 hits with a final pair of singles from the album: the MJ-indebted “Rock Your Body” (No. 5) and the Pharrell-intro’d “Señorita” (No. 27). Aside from his chart success, Timberlake also managed something on his debut album that *NSYNC never accomplished, picking up his first two career Grammys at the 2004 ceremony: best pop vocal album for Justified and best male pop vocal performance for “Cry Me a River,” from five nominations.

After back-to-back releases from *NSYNC followed quickly by his solo debut, fans had to wait a grueling four years for Timberlake’s next album. Led by “SexyBack” — his most experimental single yet, with a harsh but intoxicating electro-funk sound — FutureSex/LoveSounds debuted atop the Billboard 200 in September 2006 and signaled his arrival as a fully formed adult pop star. He leaned into his Timbaland partnership on the project, scoring his first three solo Hot 100 No. 1s with the album’s first three singles: “SexyBack”; the percussive T.I.-featuring ballad “My Love” and the two-part “What Goes Around…Comes Around,” basically a karmic sequel to “Cry Me a River.” He picked up another four Grammys across the ‘07 and ‘08 ceremonies for the project, cementing his spot as both a critical and commercial heavyweight. He also sprinkled his pop magic onto other artists’ singles in his downtime, returning the favor to Timbaland with the Hot 100-topping “Give It to Me” (also alongside Nelly Furtado) and gracing a trio of top five hits in Madonna’s “4 Minutes,” T.I.’s “Dead and Gone” and 50 Cent’s “Ayo Technology.”

That SNL success seemed to feed into Timberlake’s next move, as he took a nearly seven-year break from music to pour himself into an acting career, with varying degrees of success (there was Oscar-favorite The Social Network and charming Mila Kunis rom-com Friends With Benefits , but there was also The Love Guru ). At this point, it was unclear whether Timberlake would ever return to his recording career, but it was a testament to the level of stardom he’d reached that his fans never stopped anticipating his musical return, no matter how long he stayed on the sidelines.

He eventually found his way back to music, taking on a natty Rat Pack-inspired persona in a tuxedo and slick new hairstyle as he rolled out the smooth Jay-Z-featuring “Suit & Tie” (No. 3 peak on the Hot 100) in January 2013 and the eight-minute ode to wife Jessica Biel “Mirrors” (No. 2) in February ahead of the March release of The 20/20 Experience . The breathless excitement for Timberlake’s crooning comeback was made clear when 20/20 sold 968,000 copies in its first week – the largest solo week ever for JT – and finished as the year-end No. 1 Billboard 200 album for 2013. While the project was generally embraced by fans and critics alike, there were a few misgivings this time – including some hand-wringing over the songs’ excessive runtimes – compared to the flawless approval rating of its FutureSex/LoveSounds predecessor.

Justin Timberlake

After sticking to his electro-pop sound on top 10 lead single “Filthy,” Timberlake found another country moment on his February 2018 album Man of the Woods when he re-teamed with Stapleton for the strummy standout cut “Say Something” and scored another Hot 100 top 10. Days after the release of his fifth studio album – which debuted atop the Billboard 200, but with a much smaller first week than 20/20 — Timberlake returned to the Super Bowl stage, 14 years after the Janet incident, for a much less incendiary showing and headlining for the first time.

As JT made a memorable meme out of #SelfieKid in the Minneapolis crowd and paid tribute to hometown hero Prince at Super Bowl LII, some fans questioned why Timberlake was invited back to the Super Bowl when Jackson never was, and the pop star directly addressed that criticism years later in a 2021 Instagram statement . His comments were prompted by the February 2021 release of the documentary Framing Britney Spears , which put his post-breakup behavior in a new light and led to renewed criticism over the double-standard at play following the Super Bowl controversy, and Timberlake’s failure to properly support Jackson over the blowback she’d faced at the time, which he’d since expressed regret over. “I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed,” he wrote in part.

And that wasn’t all he had in store for fans who had been with him from the beginning: For his sixth studio album Everything I Thought It Was (led by top 20 single “Selfish”), the pop quintet got together yet again for “Paradise,” which they live-debuted just before the album’s March 15 release, and which seemed to speak directly to the fans who had been begging the boy band to reunite for decades (sample lyric: “I’ve been waiting forever/ Right here for this moment”).

Justin Timberlake

Aside from the *NSYNC reunion, JT’s latest album mostly underwhelmed, debuting at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and failing to produce any lasting hits. That lackluster performance was further compounded when Timberlake’s summer DWI arrest in The Hamptons amid the Forget Tomorrow World Tour became an online punchline, thanks to his police-reported prediction of “This is going to ruin the tour… the world tour.” But it didn’t : In fact, the recently extended trek is on track to land in the top 10 of Billboard ’s year-end tours list. And the hunger for a potential *NSYNC reunion tour is still raging as well: “Bye Bye Bye” even recharted on the Hot 100 this year – 24 years after its initial Hot 100 debut – off its use on the Deadpool & Wolverine soundtrack.

Lance Bass ‘Never Liked’ Diddy After He Told Justin Timberlake to ‘Drop’ His ‘NSync Bandmates

Lance Bass is spilling the tea on why he “never liked” Sean “Diddy” Combs .

The former ‘NSync singer, 45, said on the Wednesday, September 25, episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen that he once overheard Diddy, 54, tell his bandmate Justin Timberlake to leave the group during their final tour. Diddy opened for ‘NSync on various dates on their Celebrity Tour in 2002.

“I never had time to go to a Diddy party,” Bass said, reacting to the news of Diddy’s recent arrest on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering . “I forgot he had opened up on our last tour until all this came about. It’s kind of horrible.”

“I never kind of liked him,” Bass candidly said. “The very last show [on the tour], in Orlando, I overheard him talking to Justin and being like, ‘You need to drop these f-ers. You need to go solo. You need to drop [them].’”

Bass continued, “I was like, ‘I don’t like you anymore, Diddy.’ At my own show? What the hell!”

Bass was a member of the chart-topping boy band with Timberlake, Joey Fatone , JC Chasez and Chris Kirkpatrick . Though the group went their separate ways in 2002, they reunited in 2023 to record the song “Better Place,” which featured on the soundtrack to Timberlake’s movie Trolls Band Together .

Fatone, 47, recently told Us Weekly that an ‘NSync reunion tour is unlikely .

“The hardest part about that is, I think, we all [haven’t] had our brains together in a long time,” Fatone said. “All of us have probably different views, different points, different ideas, completely different things [to include] … now that we have been separated as a group.”

If a tour were to happen, though, Fatone said the group might have a hard time curating a setlist.

“In general, would you wanna put the old hits out? Of course, that’s what we would do [and] that’s what I would like to see,” Fatone told Us . “That’s probably what would happen if we did go on tour, but I think for us to do it, it’s gonna be a collection of a lot of different things that we do.”

He continued, “If we happen to go on tour and if it happens to take place, people are probably gonna see something they’ve never seen before — and everything they’ve seen before.”

For Fatone personally, he’d likely add “I Thought She Knew” to the setlist because it’s his favorite ‘NSync song to perform.

“It always was always my favorite,” Fatone said.

Lance bass says he ‘never liked’ sean ‘diddy’ combs after rapper told justin timberlake to ‘drop’ *nsync.

Lance Bass questioned Sean “Diddy” Combs’ character long before the rapper was arrested on sex trafficking charges.

The *NSYNC singer, 45, admitted that he stopped liking Combs after overhearing the Bad Boy Records founder advising Justin Timberlake to quit the band.

“I overheard him talking to Justin being like, ‘You need to drop these effers. You need to go solo. You need to drop these,’” Bass recalled on Wednesday’s episode of “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.”

“I was like, ‘I don’t like you anymore, Diddy.’ I’m like, ‘At my own show? What the hell!’” he continued. “So I never liked him.”

Host Andy Cohen joked that he would “not be hearing from Diddy about that,” to which Bass replied, “He’s got bigger problems than Lance Bass slagging him off on ‘Watch What Happens Live.’”

He added, “The gloves are off!”

Cohen, 56, went on to share that Bass held back some of the details about Diddy’s conversation with Timberlake once they were live.

“By the way, Lance said during the [commercial] break the Diddy conversation was even worse than he said,” the Bravo executive told viewers, to which Bass admitted, “I edited it a little bit.”

Bass confirmed that he never attended any of Combs’ star-studded parties – or his “freak offs,” in which the hip-hop mogul allegedly drugged and raped attendees, per the indictment.

“No, I never had time to go to a Diddy party,” said Bass. “I forgot he had opened up our last tour until all this kind of came about. But, yeah, it’s kinda horrible.”

Combs, 54,  was arrested  on Sept. 16 and  charged with  three counts: racketeering conspiracy; sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion; and transportation to engage in prostitution.

In an unsealed indictment , prosecutors claimed Combs “abused, threatened and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation and conceal his conduct” for decades.

He is also accused of “creating a criminal enterprise whose members and associates engaged in … sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery and obstruction of justice.”

Combs pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being held in a NYC jail after being denied bail.

Concerns over Combs’ allegedly abusive past surfaced in November 2023 when his ex-girlfriend, Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, sued him for raping and abusing her throughout their 10-year relationship.

Diddy denied the allegations and they settled the suit the next day. However, in May 2024, a video surfaced of the music producer beating Cassie at a hotel in 2016.

The “Me & U” singer’s lawsuit opened the floodgates and at least a dozen people have come forward with legal accusations against the father of seven.

Combs is allegedly planning on testifying in the sex trafficking trial, his attorney revealed this week.
