Essai Kawasaki VN1700 Voyager : fausse jumelle

Essai Kawasaki VN1700 Voyager : fausse jumelle

Alfonse Palaima

Kawasaki is retiring the old 1600cc V-Twin cruiser powerplant in favor of this new engine and chassis that underpins four new models. It starts with the basic Vulcan Classic stripped-down cruiser, then morphs into the Classic LT version with a windshield and bags. The Nomad adds a larger windshield and hard saddlebags, along with a new cruise control. The top-of-the-line model is a new Voyager full-dresser in ABS and non-ABS versions.

Kawasaki says that 86% of the cruiser market is in big-bore form, so it’s dropped the 1600cc engine and supplied the Vulcans with a 1700cc long-stroke V-Twin powerplant based on the Vulcan 2000. But instead of the V-2000’s pushrod-actuated overhead-valve arrangement, the new 1700s use single-overhead cams. Compared to the old 1600, the 1700 is said to produce 15% more torque and 20% more horsepower. Kawi claims a beefy torque peak of 108 ft-lbs at 2750 rpm, with a horsepower peak of 89 at 5000 revs. Twin counterbalancers keep vibes from the single-pin crankshaft from being objectionable. Its liquid-cooling is assisted by cylinder fins.

2009 kawasaki vulcan 1700 voyager motorcycle com, The 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager is being touted as the first Japanese full dress V Twin touring motorcycle

The powerplant is backed by a 6-speed transmission that offers overdrive ratios in the top two gears. It sends thrust rearward through a new 28mm wide carbon-fiber-based belt drive with 40% more strength than a Kevlar belt found on all the Nomad models. The narrower belt is said to be more flexible and forgiving than a shaft-drive when working with the high torque outputs of the big-bore cruiser.

A new single-backbone, double-cradle steel frame ties everything together, using some forged-steel parts for a weight reduction of 4.4 pounds and a rigidity increase of 40%. Its claimed curb weight is 761 pounds. A shorter distance from the seat to the steering head keeps it more manageable than the stretched out Vulcan 2000, as does a tidier 65.6-inch wheelbase. Its seat height is set at a cruiser-low 28.4 inches.

2009 kawasaki vulcan 1700 voyager motorcycle com, The Voyager features an integrated audio system with MP3 and iPod support

Instrumentation is provided by comprehensive, multi-function LCD displays on the tank-mounted cluster. It features a gear-position indicator, fuel gauge, clock, odometer, dual tripmeters, remaining range and average fuel consumption, all controlled by switches on the right handlebar.

The biggest and most dramatic 1700cc Vulcan for 2009 will be the flagship Voyager tourer. Touted as the world’s first Japanese full-dress V-Twin touring motorcycle, the new Vulcan 1700 Voyager is packed with technologies and amenities, some never before seen from Kawasaki. A luxury cruiser-tourer, it offers an advanced cruise control, integrated premium audio with MP3 and iPod support, and a full-feature trunk capable of holding two full-face helmets.

2009 kawasaki vulcan 1700 voyager motorcycle com, A cluster of switches on the right handlebar controls the LCD display and cruise control

The Kawasaki Advanced Co-Active Braking Technology (K-ACT) is Kawi’s answer to ABS linked brakes and exclusive to the V17V ABS model. It is engineered to unobtrusively enhance the rider’s ability with more efficient and effective braking of the motorcycle. The K-ACT system is what they call a smart system, automatically disengaging under 12 mph to alleviate the herky-jerky start and stops often found on linked brake systems at parking lot speeds. When maneuvering that much bike about tight turns, it helps to know exactly how, when and how much braking pressure is making it to the wheels.

The 2009 Voyager will come in Candy Diamond Red, Two-tone: Candy Plasma Blue / Metallic Diablo Black and Two-tone: Metallic Titanium / Metallic Diablo Black and will be smartly priced in competition with the Harley-Davidson Ultra, but no prices have been given at this time.

Along with the new Vulcan 1700s, Kawi’s 2009 line will also include the popular Vulcan 900 LT, Classic and Customs. For 2009 you’ll also find the Eliminator 125, the last year for the Vulcan 500 LTD and the Vulcan 2000 in base, Classic and Classic LT trims.

Full-dress Vtwin flagship with looks and performance!

Designed for riders who set their sights beyond the horizon, Kawasaki’s new Vulcan® 1700 Voyager® offers everything needed for comfortable long-distance touring with or without a passenger. Kawasaki’s first full-dress V-Twin touring motorcycle, the new Voyager features a large frame-mounted front fairing and windshield, ample storage, a new 1700cc, long-stroke, liquid-cooled, V-Twin engine and a compact, lightweight frame.

The flagship Voyager is also loaded with the latest technology. Its standard equipment includes Kawasaki’s first fully Electronic Throttle Valve system (ETV), Kawasaki Advanced Coactive Braking Technology (K-ACT), cruise control and multi-function instrumentation with an audio system that’s compatible with iPod®, MP3 players and other systems.

The cruiser’s cutting-edge technology is headlined by Kawasaki’s sophisticated new Kawasaki Advanced Coactive Braking Technology (K-ACT) enabling riders to execute controlled, balanced braking. Available on the ABS equipped Voyager, the new system is designed to complement the rider’s braking inputs, and utilizes control valves to distribute the ideal amount of brake force for maximum stopping performance.

With input from pressure and speed sensors, the brake ECU sends directions to the motor-driven hydraulic pumps so they deliver the proper amount of pressure to the brake calipers. This speed sensitive system provides a progressive engagement and disengagement that delivers a natural feel to the rider. With the anti-lock braking (ABS) function incorporated into the K-ACT, the wheels are prevented from locking up, even under strenuous braking.

For maximum control in tight corners and when executing parking lot maneuvers, K-ACT’s coactive function does not engage when braking is initiated at speeds below 12mph and the ABS function is automatically disengaged at speeds below 4mph. Two robust 300mm front disc brakes with four-piston calipers and a single rear disc brake with a two-piston caliper provide the stopping muscle.

More unique technology is found in Kawasaki’s new fully electronic throttle valve system which makes its debut on the all-new Voyager. Working with the rest of the fuel injection system, the electronic throttle valve offers a smooth, natural engine response. It also helps the ECU to deliver an ultra-precise metering of both fuel and intake airflow to the engine and helps provide accurate cold-engine idle speed control, reduced rider fatigue and a “natural” throttle feel.

The system utilizes dual sensors; an Accelerator Position Sensor (APS) on the throttle body and a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on the throttle. Both of these sensors feed data to the ECU, which in turn adjusts the throttle plates with exacting precision. The system is capable of functioning on one set of data alone, offering redundancy in the unlikely event of a sensor failure.

kawasaki vulcan voyager 2009

The Voyager’s light, compact frame holds a newly designed 1700cc V-twin engine based on that of the Vulcan 2000. However, it uses a single overhead cam in each cylinder head, rather than push-rod actuated OHV arrangement. This permits higher revs and quick acceleration from the new engine – delivering superior passing performance at highway speeds. The new engine’s compression and displacement increase, and long-stroke design delivers significant torque and power gains over its predecessor.

This is no V-twin from yesteryear. The Voyager’s fuel injection system, like those in use on Kawasaki’s Ninja® 650R and Vulcan 900 motorcycles, utilizes one sensor in place of the usual three for less complexity and weight. Besides the obvious advantages of FI like improved fuel economy, the system also permits easy hands-off warm-up and idle control.   The Voyager’s FI and exhaust are tuned to deliver its peak torque and horsepower at higher rpm – ideal for its open road operating environment. More touring refinement comes from the clutch, which features six damping springs and progressive three-stage damping for smoother torque delivery and easier shifting from the big 1700cc engine under hard acceleration. Kawasaki’s latest innovative technology is matched with essential touring features like cruise control and a six-speed transmission with overdrive fifth and sixth gears. The cruise control is conveniently operated from the right side of the handlebar and can be activated between 30 and 85 mph in third gear or above. Disengagement is easily accomplished by using the brake lever, clutch lever, rear brake pedal or closing the throttle.

The new six-speed transmission features overdrive and a super strong carbon fiber drive belt. The tall fifth and sixth gears contribute to relaxed riding and better fuel economy at highway speeds. The new carbon fiber drive belt has a 40-percent higher tensile strength than current Kevlar units, and allows it to use a thin and light 28mm belt that helps keep the width of the Voyager to a minimum.

The Voyager supplies superior protection from the wind and the elements thanks to a large frame-mounted windshield and front fairing, as well as leg shields. Mounting the fairing to the frame transfers any wind buffeting to the bike rather than the handlebars, reducing rider fatigue on long trips. Airflow to the lower extremities can be adjusted via air vents in the leg shields.

kawasaki vulcan voyager 2009

Nothing needs to be left behind thanks to the color-matched, top-mounted 13.2 gal (50L) lockable trunk – large enough to fit two large full-face helmets – and the sealed and lockable, top-opening saddlebags offer another 8.6 gal (38L) of volume each. Besides this ample storage, the Voyager also has lockable glove boxes up front providing a handy place for storing small items and accessories. An iPod player jack (optional iPod accessory connector required) is located in the left-side glove box.

Comfortable seating for the rider and passenger is a must on a touring bike and the Voyager delivers again with plush deluxe seats that are sculpted for all-day comfort. Contributing to long-distance passenger comfort is a luxury backrest with integrated passenger grab bars and floorboards for both the rider and passenger.

Advancing the riding comforts to the next level are the instruments and built-in radio on the Voyager’s classic automotive style console. The image is reinforced by the classic font used on the large round dials of the instrumentation and the radio that’s reminiscent of 8-track players from the 1960s.

Mixed in with the retro analog dials is a multi-function LCD display in the center of the instrument console. It’s controlled by switches on the right handle and features a gear position indicator, clock, odometer, dual trip meters, remaining range and average fuel consumption.

The intercom headset-compatible, 40W, twin-speaker audio system features a three-band (FM/AM/WX) radio that is also compatible with an iPod, a XM radio tuner or a CB radio unit. The audio system (and iPod) can be operated by an integrated controller on the left handlebar. Besides volume, the rider can adjust the bass, treble and balance levels of the system.

The Voyager also features a water-cooled alternator with rare-earth magnets that produces an impressive 48.5 amps of electrical output; enough to power add-on navigation systems and other electrical accessories that enrich modern touring. The Voyager has a convenient cigarette lighter-style power port on the dash and two power outlets under the seat – ideal for plugging in electrically heated vests.

The designers were able to infuse the abundant technology into the new Vulcan 1700 Voyager with the presence and visual appeal expected of a Kawasaki flagship. Like the dashboard, the Voyager’s bodywork continues the 60’s muscle car inspiration with its study of muscular curvature. The meticulous attention to detail and exquisite craftsmanship expended on both bodywork and engine covers is revealed in the contoured forms that look good from any angle and are as pleasing to the touch as they are to the eye.

Designed from the start to be as light and slim as possible, the new single backbone double cradle frame uses the minimal amount of forged parts and metal for a reduction of 4.4 pounds and a 40-percent increase in rigidity. With a shorter seat to steering head distance, the new lightweight chassis is more compact and shorter overall with a corresponding decrease in wheelbase. The easy-to-reach handlebars facilitate better low-speed maneuvering and contribute to greater rider confidence and comfort.   Adding to the light and easy handling of the new chassis design are the new suspension components, which are tuned to match the Vulcan 1700 Voyager’s touring performance. Dual adjustable rear air-shocks provide 3.1 inches of travel, and include air adjustable spring preload and rebound adjustment to ensure a comfortable ride feel with unique settings for the Voyager. Up front, a large 45mm fork offers four-way preload adjustment, 5.5 inches of travel and promotes precise steering feedback.

The Voyager rolls on new nine-spoke cast wheels, which use tubeless tires and complement its new muscular styling. Mounted on the attractive wheels are a 130/90 front radial tire and a wide, 170/70 rear radial tire. These aren’t the giant size tires that can "dull" handling, but beefy treads that offer good traction, smooth ride and good style. Offering a stylish alternative to traditional V-Twin tourers, the new Vulcan 1700 Voyager combines Kawasaki reliability with the performance, comfort and amenities that long-distance touring riders demand.

Fiche moto Kawasaki VULCAN 1700 Voyager 2015 Une Electra née au Japon

Kawasaki

Ouhla !

When?? Has anyone heard (from a reliable source), when this motorcycle will hit the dealers?

I heard from a reliable source that they will be arriving the first week of April. Whhat have you heard about the performance?

Performance Only what the Kawasaki sight says in their promo. If it is indeed 20% higher in horse power than the old 1600 engine, it will be a pleasing machine.

Voyager 1700 - Waiting for the revieiws I sold my 2006 Harley Dyna a couple of weeks ago anticipating the arrival of the Voyager 1700. I had seen it at the cycle show in Long Beach, CA in January and saw that it had all of the features and then some, of the Harley Road Glide that I was looking at, and after taking a 50% loss on a 3 year old Harley I'm not running there to by another one. I'll likely be putting a deposit down on the Voyager this weekend.

I know what you mean. I sold a perfectly good Goldwing (at a loss of course), to buy a 2000 Classic LT. I was a bit sorry about that switch and when the Voyager made an entrance I was more than curious. If you get one soon, keep us posted, please.

Voyager 1700 - Reviews Has anyone seen any reviews from the Vulcan Voyager 1700? I heard that it was to be released yesterday but haven't seen anything yet.

Have one at the local dealer, did not throw leg over or I would never get it back. Sweet bike though, brought back my Goldwing days. Saw one fly down the freeway last week also.

WOw, and I thought I lived in the sticks.

Word has it that our local dealer got 2 of them in on Saturday. The owner said that Kawasaki will only allow every dealer to have 2 to start with ... and only the better dealers (sales wise) are getting them right away. I intend to run over there tomorrow and see what all the fuss is about.

And???????????

(Homer Simpson Voice.....) DOH!!!!

2009 Vulcan/1700....Its' here!! I've worked at a Kawasaki dealer as a Gen.Sales Mgr., now for the past 12 years.. Im here to tell ya....this is one very nice bike indeed! I cannot say the customer response has been "Gosh, I can't wait to see it!!" With the current situation we are faced with in this country at this time.... a new $12,300.00 base motorcycle doesn't have folks beating the door down to purchase them just yet! On a postive note....this a very attractive, well balanced, engineered bike. I am anxious to ride one an experience the ride and handling....expecially the new 6-speed tranny and belt-drive. I must say....it sounds very healthy, even at an idle....and the stock pipes are "even" good looking. But, as we all know....there will be loads of things to make the bike more appealing to us all in the very near future! On a pers. note: "Why Kawasaki would drop the VN1500/FI from the current line-up is a mystery to me and all my sales-people....as this was always one of our MOST popular models and always the biggest "bang for the buck" on the show-room floor". To be able to purchase that much bike for UNDER 10k, always had customers looking at this model for ownership and enjoyment. It will be missed greatly by the sales-staff and our customer base. I am very fortunate to own a 2000 model with 53k....and cannot TELL you how many bikes were sold off of my pers. ride. TSTOCK. Cycle Specialties, Inc. Cincinnati, Ohio

I agree, financial crunch now-a-days, everything is slowing down. I figure with gas back up to $2.30 per gallon, now is the time to ride, though I wish I had a larger touring capacity on the gas tank (only about 140 miles I think, I am still running my first full tank). Used bike market should really heat up though, yes?

Used bike market.... The used bike market is and always has been a tremendous success area for any dealership. This is where the customer heads first because of price of course. I have never seen an increase as "strong" as 2009....in the past maybe a one or two hundred bucks on the increase, but this year I've seen new bikes job $1000 or more in alot of cases. The day of "affordable" motorcycles... is not going to be around too much longer for the average guy. And I used to think this was just a Harley problem..."Too much money....not enough bike"!! TSTOCK Cycle Specialties, Inc.

Base model!! The base model VN1700 starts out at 12,300.00! It goes up from there for the up-graded models!!

Found a couple of Nomads Live outside of DC and have found 2 dealers that have a 1700 Nomad on the floor. Took my wife up to look at one just last weekend. Good news is she likes the back seat. Now looking for some one that has had one on the road.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been on a Harley Fatboy and the Yamaha Roadliner so I have a general idea about heavier bikes. Never ridden a Kawasaki and no one I ride with has one, so really looking to jump into some new territory for myself with this. Just trying to make that final decision on how comfortable I am with a First year model bike and see if anyone out there has actually ridden one of these new 1700 and what their thoughts are.

Hey everyone, I bought a 1700 Classic LT 3 weeks ago. Great bike. Put nearly 1700 miles on her so far. Handles great in the twisties. Good acceleration. Beefy sound. Good vibrations. 6th gear is nice. Averaging about 36 mpg. But I'm riding her pretty hard. Can get 39 mpg if I drive like an old man. Bike will scoot. I really like this bike.

Bought One Purchased my VOYAGER 05/09/2009 I have a Roadliner, so size wasn't an issue. Price is OK. Ride is great. One question, is the Kawaski transmission always this noisy or is it just this model. There is a whining noise around 32½ MPH, it doesn't matter what gear your in it still makes the noise. Heading for the dealership Tuesday. Like the bike, looking for a backrest and risers for better ergonomics.

Went by the dealership, apparently the back wheel was out of line and the belt was too tight. Dealership performed corrections under warranty and all is well. I'm really enjoying the Voyager. I've about got the 500 miles, so maybe tomorrow I'll be able to run her above 2500 RPM but below 3500. As it is I'm running 70 MPH @ 2500 RPM. Getting an average of 40+ MPG.

OK, if the forum allows photos. I took the bike in for it's 600 mile short service today and am supposed to get the bike back tomorrow around noon. I'll try to take some photos and upload them ASAP. If you're in in a hurry go to http://www.kawasaki.com and check out the titanium colored 1700 Voyager, that's mine. Be sure to look under the "Touring" heading.
