When, Where, and How To Watch the 2024 World Indoor Tour Gold Madrid. All Your Queries Answered

A s the ninth edition of the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold Madrid arrives, be ready to be fascinated by the electrifying indoor track and field world. Taking place across 54 meetings around Europe, North America, and Asia, this esteemed series features the finest one-day professional tournaments in the world. Following the recent Millrose Games in New York City on February 11, it reached the 7th Gold event in Madrid on February 23, which will take center stage.

Let’s dive into the lesser-known event details that will have you counting down the days until the sporting event takes over as the tour prepares for its Madrid leg.

When and where will the World Indoor Tour Gold Madrid 2024 be played?

The Villa De Madrid Indoor Meeting is an annual indoor track and field tournament, now part of the World Athletics Indoor Tour meeting taking place on 23 February 2024. Held in the capital thrice (2020, 2021, and 2022) since its inception in 2016, each time at the Gallur Municipality Sports Complex in the La Latina district. Further, the city’s heritage has been enhanced by athletes’ impressive records, like America’s Grant Holloway (7.29 in the 60-meter hurdles) in 2021 and Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas (15m43 in the triple jump) in 2020.

The 800-meter, 3000-meter, pole vault, shot put, 60-meter hurdles, and triple jump are scheduled in the men’s division, while the official timetables have not been announced for the World Indoor Tour. The women’s events feature events in the 1500 meters, 60 meters hurdles, high jump, 400 and long jump, promising an interesting and varied lineup. The battle is rigorous and financially lucrative, with huge stakes; each winner will get at least $3,000.

Athletes in the top four in each event receive three bonus points for setting a world record. Automatic intake to the Championships is given to the overall champions in their respective disciplines. Even more exciting is the qualification that leads to the Glasgow, Scotland-hosted 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships set for March 1-3. In addition, the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour offers spectators a chance to see the amazing abilities of sportsmen, however, the digital coverage also caters to the fans’ liking.

Heartbreak for Vicente after officials’ error published at 17:47 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021 17:47 GMT 23 February 2021

Maria Vicente

The pit of despair: Maria Vicente

A long jumper was reduced to tears when officials mistakenly erased her mark after a leap that could have won her the title at the Spanish Championships last Sunday.

Maria Vicente, 19, appeared to have jumped beyond 6.50m with her first attempt in the competition but two officials in the pit, believing she had fouled on take-off, brushed sand over her mark. Replays showed the Catalan athlete, already a gold medal winner in the pentathlon on Friday, had not fouled,

Offered a free attempt, a clearly distraught Vicente fouled on her extra chance but later returned to the competition to record 6.24m, a jump that gave her the bronze medal. The winner, Fatima Diame, jumped 6.51m and the silver went to Tessy Ebosele with 6.31m, suggesting Vicente should have at least taken silver.

“There's no excuse for what happened,” a tearful Vicente told reporters afterwards. “The judge saw that it was a valid jump but I don't understand why those in the pit thought it was a foul and wiped it out. I feel so emotional because I lost because of this.”

Record-breaker Crouser thriving in lockdown published at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021 17:46 GMT 23 February 2021

Ryan Crouser

The Covid-19 pandemic has been a problem for athletes attempting to stay safe while still training for the delayed Tokyo Olympics but not American shot putter Ryan Crouser, who has seemed to sail through the experience unaffected.

Crouser has had to be creative, taking his weight training to a garage and using a sheet of plywood behind an elementary school as a site for throwing practice. As a result, the 28-year-old American, who won gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, set a world indoor record of 22.82m last month.

“Not going to lie and say it's been easy,” Crouser told Reuters. “There's been a lot of improv - I have just kind of found my rhythm in my throw a little, just shutting my brain off and letting the throw happen.”

He is now gunning for the world outdoor record of 23.12m, set in 1990 by Randy Barnes, the 1996 Olympic champion who was banned for life after a second failed drugs test in 1998.

“I think if we can get the world record to be thrown under the scrutiny we have presently that would be a great step forward for track and field,” said Crouser.

Andrew Pozzi and Grant Holloway

Andrew Pozzi (left) and Grant Holloway (right) go head to head in the 60m hurdles

One of the highlights of Wednesday's programme will be the 60m hurdles, where Great Britain's Andrew Pozzi, the reigning world indoor champion, will face Grant Holloway of the USA.

Holloway ran the second-fastest time in history in Lievin, just 0.02 seconds behind the long-standing record set 27 years ago by Colin Jackson.

Elsewhere, Gudaf Tsegay returns to the track after breaking the women's 1500m record in France three weeks ago, this time taking part in the 3000m event.

Eight of the ten discipline titles will be decided this weekend, with US$20,000 prize money and a guaranteed entry into next year's World Athletics Indoor Championships up for grabs.
