Finding manatees in Florida Keys can be a challenge, but your chances of seeing these gentle and lovely creatures are substantially higher if you’re in the islands!

You’ll probably understand why manatees are called “sea cows” after seeing one in person; these slow-moving grazers may weigh up to 1,000 lbs and reach heights of 10 feet. According to National Geographic , manatees are typically observed alone, in pairs, or tiny groups of no more than six creatures. 

The animal’s snout and nostrils are frequently the only parts of it that are visible from above the water’s surface. Although manatees never leave the water, they must come to the surface to breathe because they are marine mammals. 

A manatee may stay underwater while resting for as long as 15 minutes, and while swimming, it needs to come to the surface every three to four minutes.

Manatees can change their behavior in the wild if they get used to being near people. This could make them lose their natural fear of humans and boats, making them more vulnerable to injury.

Although manatees have a large number of teeth, they don’t bite. Like their elephant cousins, they could only grow new teeth six times in their lifespan. 

They eat seagrass and other plants with their teeth. They can grow to over 14 feet long and weigh 3,000 pounds. They are heavy eaters and the largest herbivore in the ocean.

7 Great Spots To See Manatees In Florida Keys

While it is possible to see manatees in the Florida Keys year-round , the best time to see these amazing, slow-moving large mammals is when the water temperatures drop in the northern parts of Florida. Like most visitors to the Florida Keys in winter, the manatees prefer warm water .

The species you’ll find is a subspecies of the West Indian Manatees called the Florida Manatee . Unfortunately, this is an endangered species due to climate change and rapidly depleted habitat. They are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

Seeing manatees in the wild is a magical experience, but keep your distance and never touch or feed them . Touching or feeding them can upset the delicate balance of their natural ecosystem.  

As with all wildlife, where to see manatees in the Keys depends on their timing. There is no guarantee that you will see them but for your best chance at a sighting, here are seven suggestions.

1) John Pennekamp State Park

The John Pennekamp State Park is a one-stop shop for marine life in the Florida Keys. Visitors can snorkel under the water with the tropical fish and living coral in this undersea playground. Kayaking above the water is another excellent way to see the rich sea life of the Florida Keys .

There are miles of paddling trails that take visitors through the mangroves and into the shallow waters of Largo Sound. Stop by the concessionaire stand for a trail map. To spot manatees in John Pennekamp State Park , turn your kayak towards the mangrove channels and the seagrass beds, where the manatees spend most of their time.

Manatees are slow-moving grazers and like to hang out in the mangroves and sea grass, searching for food and resting. The mangroves provide a quiet, sheltered place for the manatees to raise their young calves.

Kayaks, canoes and stand up paddle boards (SUP) are available for rent in the park.

2) Indian Key Historic State Park

A great place to search for manatees is in the sheltered spots around the tiny island of Indian Key . The manatees like to hang out close to the island to seek respite from boats.

Indian Key is an uninhabited island of only 11 acres. Visitors can paddle out to the island and disembark to explore the ruins of a ghost town from the 1800s. This once-thriving town was the first county seat for Miami Dade County.

Searching for manatees, sunbathing, hiking, and snorkeling are popular activities here.

3) Cow Key Marina

If you are staying in Key West, head to Cow Key Marina for a chance to spot the resident manatees . The marina is located on Stock Island, about five miles north of the Southernmost Point.

Locals and visitors report almost daily sightings of the gentle giants who call this area home. Most of these manatees are easily recognized as long-time residents with unique personalities.

The marina offers boat rentals, fishing supplies, kayak rentals, and restrooms.

4) Dry Tortugas National Park

One of the least visited national parks in America is the Dry Tortugas National Park. Getting there is only possible by boat or seaplane, which tends to deter some people.

The Dry Tortugas are a series of seven islands that include Garden Key, Loggerhead Key, Bush Key, Long Key, Hospital Key, Middle Key, and East Key. Most visitors will focus on the attractions on Garden Key, which includes historic Fort Jefferson.

Take a kayak or stand-up paddleboard into the water to spot the diverse marine life. While not as common as in some areas in the Florida Keys, manatees are often spotted in the Dry Tortugas National Park. Kayak and SUP rentals are available. To launch a watercraft here, you will need to get a free boating permit, available on Garden Key.

5) Key West Bight Marina

The Key West Bight Marina is located in the heart of the Key West Historic Seaport, a short walk from Duval Street.

Manatees are occasionally spotted at the marina. However, for your best chance at a manatee sighting, you should get out on the water. Take a kayak, SUP, or even a jet ski and escape to a quiet spot to find manatees in the Florida Keys.

Manatees love to hang out in warmer waters and like to spend their winter months in Key West. Look for manatees, lemon sharks, and mudskippers in the protected mangrove tunnels.

6) Garrison Bight Marina

The Garrison Bight Marina is centrally located in Key West, on the island’s northern side. This bustling area is surrounded by hotels, restaurants, and shops.

If you prefer to stay on land and search for manatees, it is possible to see them in the Garrison Bight area. There have been sightings from land. However, your best chance at a sighting is by heading out on the water. Rent a kayak or join a kayak tour and get out into the mangrove tunnels where the manatees love to hide.

The manatees also search for freshwater sources. Boaters who use a freshwater hose to clean their boat sometimes attract manatees. Look in the area around the boats and see if they have attracted a visitor.

Floridans in general and residents of Key West in particular hold a special place in their heart for the manatee, affectionately nicknamed sea cows by the natives. Those planning to go on a Key West snorkeling tour should make a definite effort to keep an extra eye out for these gentle giants, who are the state's official marine mammal. Though it is illegal to hunt or harass manatees, there is no rule against pictures, as many delighted tourists can attest. These animals, while large, are remarkably placid and can be safely observed even at a close distance.

Manatee Appearance

Manatees belong to the order Serenia, romantically named by presumably shortsighted sailors who thought they were seeing mermaids. They are large barrel shaped marine mammals with gentle eyes who usually weigh about 1,300 pounds, though a large one can also weigh more than twice that number on occassion. Likewise, a large full grown manatee can be as long as 13 feet long, making them an intimidating sight, though most are not quite that long. They are a long lived animal and can live easily to 50 or 60 if not killed first by predators or by a boat propellor, an avoidable tragedy that claims an unfortunate number of manatee lives each year. They use a paddle shaped tail to proppel themselves, though they don't move very quickly as a rule. Manatees usually have only a single calf per pregnancy, though occassionally twins may also be born. These calves take several years to mature and are not considered adults until they are about 9 feet long and 5 years old. One physical quirk of the manatee is that they still have fingernails, a remant from a time when they still lived on land. There is also a hand-like bone structure in their fins, further evidence of their landlocked past. They are a grey color, but can look green sometimes since algae grows on their back.

Manatee Eating Habits

Manatees are herbivores who enjoy munching on seagrass and other marine plants. They will occassionally accidentally eat a fish, but generally stay away from eating anything but plants. They can eat up to 200 pounds each day, or about 15 percent of their body weight. Due to the wear and tear the tough plants and sandy particles cause to their teeth, they replace them throughout their life, with the newer teeth coming in at the back of their mouth. They usually have no more than two dozen teeth at a time.

Manatee Habitats

There are three living species of manatee, and though they all prefer warm water the only specie found in the waters around Key West is the West Indian Manatee. Despite their size they get cold easily and need to stay in warm water, and can in fact die of hypothermia in waters colder than 60 degrees. Due to this and their plant diet, they prefer warm, shallow coastal waters where plenty of vegetation grows.

In 1983, the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge was established in Kings Bay to specifically protect the Florida manatees that consider this area their home. King’s Bay is fed by 40 natural springs, which maintain a constant temperature of 72 °F (22 °C) — a temperature that the Manatees love and need.

Ryan and Jessica were great to tour with, extremely knowledgeable, and went out of their way to look for manatees further away from the crowds when possible. We saw several manatees and a few calves with their moms. Fun 2 Dive staff are very friendly and respectful to the environment and the animals which I hope we all learn from in the years to come. They also take excellent photographs, so you can leave your camera at home.

Just went on our first trip out to see the manatees. Captain Jason and guide Bree were amazing and so patient. The knowledge they both shared made the trip magical. If you come to see manatees I would definitely go with Fun 2 Dive. The entire staff was awesome and worked together to ensure we all had great tours and made memories to last a lifetime.

This was worth the money. We visited in the "off season" for manatees and were a little worried we might not find one. However, our guides knew all the best places and we were in the water for over 2 hours within a few feet of them. The equipment provided was like new and we were given helpful instructions on appropriate behavior when interacting with the manatees. We chose the 6 people or less in a group option and I would say the smaller the group had better the experience.

One of the absolute best experiences we’ve ever had. My dive partner Ryan, and our Captain Jason made this trip one of the best we’ve ever done. They are professional, knowledgeable, and absolutely delightful to be with. Even if you’re not swimming & you just stay on the boat to observe it's a fabulous way to spend a few hours. I can honestly say this was my greatest experience to date. Dani was very knowledgeable and made us feel comfortable searching for manatees. She took great pictures and made sure our group was all accounted for. Captain Ryan, our boat driver, was very informative about the areas and waters. He knew key spots to dive into. Jake and Evan were awesome. They were great with instructions and making everyone comfortable. They gave a flash drive at the end with amazing pictures for us to remember which they included. Most tours charge extra for this. The best part was the experience though. They definitely know where to go and the best time. We did the early morning but SO worth it. Evan and his team personalized my trip and went out of their way to make my experience perfect. We went out with Evan & Jake last week and had a FABULOUS experience! There were 5 in our group (age range 16 - 80) so we were able to rent the whole boat and have a private tour. We lucked out and hit the jackpot in terms of seeing lots of manatees. We were nervous because we weren't able to go out until the 10:15 tour (due to having to drive a distance first), but Evan knew right where to take us and we saw lots of manatees - even an adult and nursing youngster! Evan drove the boat and kept my mother-in-law company (who chose not to swim). Evan shared lots of interesting information with her while Jake hopped in the water with the rest of us. He gave us lots of tips and took pictures. At the end of the tour they gave us a thumb drive with the pictures - included in the price! Evan & Jake are very personable and made it a fun tour four all 5 of us. They are clearly knowledgeable about the area and the manatees and shared lots of interesting information. Their smaller tours are definitely the way to go!

An experience we will never forget! These guys were full of information and got us up close to many different manatees including a mother and calf. They were able to find them away from other groups which was great because it can get a little crowded in places. The guide in the water (and one watching from the boat) was tremendously helpful to spot the manatees and get us right to them. The benefit of having a photographer taking photos in the water is priceless! We have these awesome pictures to look back anytime we want! To top the trip off, we found some dolphins and followed them around and watched them feeding. Recommend these guys 100%! Fyi… they were with another top rated company and went out on their own. I called the other company, they were booked, and they recommended these guys and I’m so glad they did.

This was probably one of my favorite life experiences! We got really lucky with the weather and due to a last minute cancellation, it was just 3 of us with Hina as our guide and Carlos as our captain. We were able to see around 6 manatees, including two pairs of moms with babies. Hina is really knowledgeable and told us lots of great info such as how we could tell that one of the babies was adopted by another momma manatee. She also got great photos for us! I recommend getting an early morning tour, it’s rough waking up but worth the sunrise and the experience! Hina and Carlos did a great job of making it a fantastic morning!

We had a great time on our swim with the Manatees! We liked that the Nature Discovery boats take out smaller groups. Once we got to the springs, there were quite a few other boat and people, but being on a smaller tour gave us more individual attention from our guide and boat Caption. We got to see and swim along side many Manatees. They are super big, and being next to them is an amazing experience. We were provided with wet suits, masks, and snorkels. The equipment was in Excellent condition. The store front where we changed was clean, and they have a cute gift shop. I love that the guide took photos of the experience. I would definitely recommend Nature’s Discovery Manatee Tours!!

For over 20 years, I've wanted to swim with the Manatees. When you've built something up for that long, it has the potential to not live up to expectations. Thankfully for me, it was amazing. The staff made sure it was everything I'd hoped for. They were super friendly. Explained clearly both expectations and what was included. Ample pictures were taken, and a real effort was made to take multiple "$ shots". They were also dog friendly which was huge for us. I loved my experience and will definitely use them again if we ever come back to Crystal River. I really loved Hina, our guide.

Where To See Manatees In Key West – 2024 Guide

Welcome to the sunny paradise of Key west where the warm waters are home to some of the most gentle and fascinating creatures on earth – manatees!

I’ve been to Key West several times now and every time I visit, I always seem to find a new spot with tons of manatees.

Based on firsthand experience, the best place to see manatees in Key West is at Cow Key Marina where you’ll find a large population of manatees.

I’d recommend booking onto a kayaking tour from the marina to drastically up your chances of seeing a manatee! You’ll get an up close & personal view.

In the rest of this article, I’ll cover all of the exact locations where you can see manatees in Key West.

Best Places To See Manatees In Key West

You actually have a really great chance of seeing manatees in Key West as they love to hang out here due to the abundance of seagrass (their favorite snack). 

You’ll often see them poking their heads out of the water in several spots across Key West.

Cow Key Marina

Hands down, the best place to see manatees in Key West is at Cow Key Marina. 

Cow Key Marina is located between Stock Island and Key West. It’s a known location where manatees love to hang out so it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll spot one in the area. 

Every time that I’ve visited Cow Key Marina, I’ve seen at least 6 manatees swimming around!

There are many resident manatees that live in the marina and they even have cute names like Marshal, Big Moe, Speedy, Pete and Little Rich. They are all named after their unique personalities.

The best way to see them is to get out onto the water itself.

Best Tours From Cow Key Marina:

• Kayaking Tour – top pick , explore the nearby mangrove forests to find manatees
• Stand-Up Paddleboarding Tour – includes a lesson if you’re a beginner

I love the stand-up paddle boarding tour because it’s a super fun way to explore the area – don’t worry if you’ve never done it before as the experienced guides will show you how.

As you’re paddling or kayaking through the mangrove forests in this area, you’ll be able to see manatees as well as tropical fish, birds, small sharks, rays and more. 

💡 Top Tip: Bring along a GoPro to capture some super cool underwater footage of the manatees! 

I’m so glad I did this when swimming with dolphins because the video always brings back the best memories.

Key West Bight

This historic seaport features restaurants, bars, art galleries, museums, hotels and more.

I’ve often spotted manatees from the marina itself but for the best chance of seeing one, I’d recommend getting out onto the water.

There are tons of fun water activities that you can do in the marina. One of my favorite activities in this area is jet skiing ! 

You can book a jet ski tour from Key West Bight where you’ll be taken out into the ocean on your jet ski. 

Watch out for manatees, dolphins, stingrays, sea turtles and more as the experienced guides take you through the various tropical waterways of Key West.

The last time I visited Key West Bight, I saw a family of manatees gliding around together and I saw a dolphin too.

This is a super popular tour so I recommend booking in advance as it often sells out. 

• Key West Jet Ski Tour

Dry Tortugas National Park

If you have time, I’d recommend heading over to Dry Tortugas National Park to see manatees.

This national park is a series of islands that sits around 70 miles from Key West and makes for the perfect day trip if you love history, white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and marine life.

It also features the impressive Fort Jefferson, an enormous octagonal-shaped fort which occupies one of the islands.

Only around 60,000 people visit this national park every year which is minuscule compared to other US national parks so it feels like an untouched haven that few people know about. 

How To Get To Dry Tortugas National Park

The only way to get to Dry Tortugas National Park is by either boat or seaplane.

I’d recommend pre-booking this day trip from Key West as it includes a boat transfer to and from the island. This is the tour that I personally did and I can only saw great things about it!

It’s a stunning 2 & a half hour journey to the island where you’ll likely glide past manatees, sharks, rays and sea turtles. 

Key features of the tour :

• On-board naturalist who will tell you about your surroundings
• Transport to and from Key West aboard a luxury catamaran
• Swim & snorkel around a coral reef (chance to see dolphins & sea turtles)
• Breakfast & lunch provided
• Visit tropical beaches, a historic fort & a national park

Just a quick heads up, this tour often sells out as it’s super popular so I’d recommend pre-booking online in advance to ensure you get a spot.

If you opt for the seaplane option, you’ll get there much quicker (45 minutes) but it will cost a lot more. 

When I first arrived on this island, I was amazed at the white sandy beaches and the untouched coral reefs where you’ll find the manatees! I saw at least 4 or 5 manatees here.

• Day Trip To Dry Tortugas National Park

Garrison Bight

This marina, which is centrally located in the heart of Key West, has fresh water which often attracts manatees.

Whilst you can often see the manatees from the marina, you’ll have a better chance of seeing them if you get out into the water itself.

I’ve always managed to spot at least 2 or 3 manatees here every time I’ve visited.

If you want to get out onto the water, there’s tons of water activities that you can join when you get there. You could also try this super fun sunset and cocktail cruise .

Climb aboard the Catamaran boat with an open bar and look out for manatees in the surrounding waters as you glide along, enjoying the scenic Floridian coast.

Best Time Of Year To See Manatees

It’s possible to see manatees in the waters of Key West year round as there’s a resident population of manatees that live there.

Whilst you can see them at any time of year, the best time is during the winter months when more manatees arrive from up north.

During the winter, water temperatures drop so manatees who usually live in places like Fort Lauderdale migrate south to Key West and Miami to stay in the warmer waters during the winter months (November to March).

The West Indian species of manatee, which lives in Key West, only breeds in warm waters.

In fact, they die in water colder than 60 degrees so they wouldn’t survive in the winter further north.

What Is The Best Time Of Day To See Manatees?

You can see manatees at any time of day in Key West but the best time is in the morning.

In the morning, manatees often move around in groups and are very playful. You’ll often be able to see them eating and playing.

The manatees spend about half of their day eating and half sleeping. You’ll often spot them throughout the day when they’re looking for food.

Manatee Spotting Tips

Manatees are still considered to be an ‘endangered’ species so it’s important that we do all we can to protect them.

Unfortunately manatee numbers are declining due to a variety of factors including habitat loss, collisions with boats, entanglement in fishing gear and climate change.

It is illegal to touch or feed the manatees in Florida so follow these simple tips to keep them safe:

• Don’t feed the manatees.
• Don’t touch the manatees.
• Try not to be too loud as this could startle them.
• Don’t get too close. Give them enough space to move.
• If you are in a boat or on a jet ski, stay a safe distance so the manatees do not get injured.

These simple guidelines help keep both you and the manatees safe.

Can You Swim With Manatees In Key West?

Unfortunately, you are not able to swim with manatees in Key West or anywhere in the Florida Keys. 

Don’t worry though you can take part in lots of other fun activities involving the manatees including kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and jet skiing.

This rule is designed to protect the manatees and luckily it doesn’t stop you seeing them out in the wild.

We had a great experience renting two kayaks.  They even gave us a free ride to the kayak launch spot to paddle out to Indian Key and then we paddled back to them through the mangroves and had some incredible views! 5 stars

This was our first time paddle boarding, and what a fun time we had. Mark was very knowledgeable and helpful. The equipment was perfect for our needs. With a little instruction we were out the back door and on the water. We would definitely stop back again!

Super-professional Service! Rented a SUP on the spur of the moment and had it delivered within 30 minutes because he happened to have an extra one on board when making a delivery to our area. SWEET!!! Rates were very reasonable! Had a blast. HIGHLY recommend!

Your Family's Gotta Try This: Snorkeling with Manatees in Crystal River

When you get up-close-and-personal with a manatee, the first thing that you notice is its gargantuan size. Adult manatees are normally 9-10 feet long and weigh around 1,000 pounds, but they can grow to over 13 feet long and weigh more than 3,500 pounds. 1,000 pounds is the size of the average horse. That’s a big animal—whether you’re atop a paddleboard, in a kayak or boat, and particularly if you’re swimming next to one.

The second thing you notice is how cute they are. A manatee face is akin to something out of a cartoon, with tiny, round eyes and a shrunken, smushed- in version of an elephant’s trunk for a snout—big, soft and grey, complete with a smattering of whiskers. Their profiles are blimp-like, and they have two forelimb flippers they employ to steer and to hold vegetation while they munch on it.

Algae and barnacles cling to their backs, a hint at their speed—or rather, their lack of it. They normally lumber around at about five miles an hour, but have the capacity to motor up to 15 miles per hour in short bursts, should the rare occasion warrant it. They’re gentle beasts with no natural predators, and as they eat more than a tenth  of their weight in food every day, grazing is a focal point of their days.
