The New York Times names New Haven as one of its 52 places to visit in 2023
NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) - London, Madrid, Istanbul, and New Haven?
The Elm City is making headlines after making a recent list from The New York Times, naming it as one of its 52 places to visit in 2023.
It’s a nice honor for the Elm City, getting named alongside some world class cities and some trendy spots in the United States.
Sure, it’s known all over the world as being the home of Yale, and a place where people come from near and far for its famous thin crust pizza.
But a recent spotlight on New Haven is highlighting so much more.
“I think it feels like good, New Haven is finally getting its due,” said Jacqueline Pagano of New Haven.
Jacqueline Pagano and Corey Larkin have called the Elm City home the last four years.
So, the fact that The New York Times named New Haven as one of its 52 places to go in 2023?
“I think it’s not too surprising,” said Corey.
Checking in at number 50 on the list, the short write up describes:
“This is a big, big deal. Fifty-two places in the world, let’s be clear, 52 places in the world that are awesome to visit, and New Haven is one of them,” said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker.
With the focus on art, food, neighborhoods and culture, Elicker said the newspaper is just scratching the surface on what those who call this place home experience every day.
“The New York Times figured out what we all know in New Haven, that this is an incredible city, everything from pizza to soul food. We’ve got so much to offer, the diversity of the community and it’s nice to be recognized,” said Elicker.
The article mentions checking into the Hotel Marcel, the Old Pirelli building on Long Wharf which was recently turned into the first completely solar powered, energy neutral hotel in the country.
It gives a shoutout to out NXTHVN, described as a cutting-edge community focused art center. It was founded four years ago in two abandoned factory buildings in the Dixwell neighborhood, and home to a vibrant African American artists’ community.
New Haven is known for its restaurants, having something for everyone.
The write up insists you treat yourself to a great meal, mentioning Villa Lulu, a newer Italian spot on College Street.
“It has well known locations as far as restaurants, the Green is a highlight, well rounded, hospitality people,” said Lori Snell Savage of Norwalk.

Travel | grand junction named one of new york times’ 52 places to go in 2023, palisade plunge, area’s natural arch concentration are main features on list.
Citing the area’s similarities to Moab, Utah and Arches National Park, New York Times travel writer Elaine Glusac calls Grand Junction “a bonanza of canyons, arches and cliffs, without the hordes of tourists.”
Rattlesnake Canyon in the 123,700-acre McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area has the second-highest concentration of natural arches in the U.S., which are reachable by off-road vehicles or a 14-mile round-trip hike.
Also featured in the listing are the hiking trails in the Colorado National Monument about 10 minutes out of town.
The Palisade Plunge — a mountain bike trail from the top of 10,000-foot Grand Mesa down to the Colorado River — opened in 2021 and added a 32-mile trail and 6,814-foot descent to the area’s offerings.
“All trails lead back to downtown Grand Junction,” Glusac wrote. “Filled with shops, craft breweries, locavore restaurants and wine-tasting rooms from area vineyards .”
The area’s vineyards caused Food + Wine Magazine to recently dub Grand Junction as “the new Sonoma.”
The New York Times publishes its “52 Places to Go” list annually, and this year’s list also includes the likes of London, Istanbul, New Haven, Conn., and Monument Valley.
“Travel’s rebound has revealed the depth of our drive to explore the world,” the list reads. “Why do we travel? For food, culture, adventure, natural beauty? This year’s list has all those elements, and more.”

"Anyone who walks, bikes, or buses through the streets or along the shoreline of New Haven will quickly notice the ‘treasure trove’ of all there is to do and see and why we’re on the map with so many other extraordinary travel destinations from around the globe," Elicker said. "The description in The New York Times just scratches the surface of what New Haven has to offer, and I look forward to more visitors from across the country and tourists from around the world coming to enjoy the city and what we as residents get to experience every day."
The Times points to the city's architecture, the New Haven Preservation Trust's conservation work, and community-focused arts center, NXTHVN as among the reasons to visit.
The energy-neutral Hotel Marcel was also listed as a reason to visit.
As Hotel Marcel notes on its Facebook page, it is "powered solely by the sun."
"Hotel Marcel is designed to be the 1st hotel in the country to achieve Passive House and LEED Platinum certification," it reads. "It's a redux of the landmark Pirelli building designed by Marcel Breuer — famed modernist architect and our illustrious namesake."
And, new College Street Italian eatery Villa Lulu was mentioned as an eatery not to be missed.
It calls the city, "home to tinkerers and rebels, and a treasure trove of contemporary art and architecture.”
“We’re so proud to see New Haven included in The Times’ ’52 Places to Go’ list, and be in the company of such incredible destinations across the globe,” Market New Haven director Bruno Baggetta said in a news release. “We see this as a culmination of the hard work our city has put into community outreach and tourism. This honor only further energizes our efforts to cement New Haven as a hub for connection and innovation.”
New York Times travel editor Amy Virshup said the curated list was created by writers and photographers from across the world.
Elicker also noted that the city is "working hard" to support, recognize and celebrate New Haven's "traditionally under-represented local artists, cultural organizations, and civic institutions."
He said the city's "ongoing implementation of our first-ever Cultural Equity Plan is being created to "provide an even richer and fuller reflection of the extraordinary artistic and cultural contributions and heritage of our residents.”

Kerala featured in ‘New York Times’ list of 52 destinations for 2023
London features first in the list followed by morioka in japan, monument valley navajo tribal park in the usa, kilmartin glen in scotland and auckland in new zealand.
Kerala was selected as one of the 52 places to visit in 2023 by the New York Times.
Kerala has been listed at the 13th spot in the newspaper’s annual list of places to visit and is the only tourist destination listed from India.
The report described Kerala as a southern Indian State known for its beaches, backwater lagoons, cuisine and rich cultural traditions.
It also mentioned about the responsible tourism destinations in the State, including Kumarakom and Maravanthuruthu.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan took it to twitter and said it was recognition of the approach towards community tourism.
“The @nytimes has selected Kerala as one of the 52 places to visit in 2023. Our exemplary approach to community tourism that allows travellers to relish Kerala’s rich culture and breathtaking landscapes have been lauded. Yet another exciting achievement for @KeralaTourism,” Vijayan tweeted.

The report describes Kerala as a place where one can learn to climb a palm tree, visit a temple during an annual festival and get a sustainable taste of village life.
London features first in the list followed by Morioka in Japan, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in the USA, Kilmartin Glen in Scotland and Auckland in New Zealand.
Palm Springs in California, Kangaroo Island in Australia, Vjosa River in Albania, Accra in Ghana, Tromso in Norway, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil, Bhutan, Greenville in South Carolina and Tucson (Arizona) are also in the top list.
Kerala Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas, said the achievement was a global accolade for the State’s community-based activities in the travel and hospitality sector.
“The government considers sustainable tourism development meaningful if only it leads to the development of local communities. The global honour will give a fillip to the arrival of foreign tourists to the State,” Riyas said in a statement.
He said the government has been cooperating with not only other States but also with several foreign countries which are keen to replicate the Kerala model of Responsible Tourism (RT).
“Since the RT Mission has been transformed into a society, its activities can be widened to more areas. The government aims to buttress the local economy and transform it as a major economic source of the State,”he said.
The State government said the year gone by witnessed remarkable achievements and inspiring global and national honours for Kerala Tourism.
TIME magazine figured Kerala as one of the ’50 Extraordinary Destinations to explore in 2022′. Conde Nast Traveller featured Kerala’s Aymanam village among 30 best places to visit, while Travel & Leisure magazine chose the State for the Global Vision Award.
Last year, the STREET project, a part of the State’s Responsible Tourism initiative, bagged the global award at World Travel Market (WTM), London.

Morioka, Fukuoka among 52 Places to Go in N.Y. Times List
16:26 JST, January 14, 2023
NEW YORK (Jiji Press) — The Japanese cities of Morioka and Fukuoka have made The New York Times’ 2023 list of 52 places to go around the world.
Morioka “is often passed over or outright ignored,” while Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto are attracting many foreign tourists following Japan’s drastic relaxation of COVID-19 border control measures, according to the list released in the newspaper’s online edition Thursday.
Morioka is “a walkable gem without the crowds, just a short bullet train ride from Tokyo,” the paper said, adding that the city is full of buildings combining traditional Japanese and Western-style architectural aesthetics built during the Taisho era in the early 20th century.
The list also notes food-related attractions in the form of coffee and wanko soba, noodles in small bowls that are served one after another so customers can enjoy eating the noodles quickly.
Fukuoka “is one of the few remaining places in Japan where you will see rows of yatai street food vendors, the paper said, noting traditional ones offering ramen noodles and yakitori chicken skewers, as well as new types selling wine and coffee.
Visitors can savor “an endangered street-food tradition on the often overlooked island of Kyushu,” where the city is located, the paper said.

Best hotel in the world is ‘rare oasis’ with private pools, personal butler — and rates from $600 per night.
One night in Bangkok? Check into the so-called “best hotel in the world.”
An exclusive list of just fifty elite lodgings compiled by a noted organization has been announced — and the Capella Bangkok, “a calming riverside oasis” at the heart of the “cacophonous” Thai capital has been ranked number one.
The World’s 50 Best Hotels, compiled by the same group responsible for the splashy World’s 50 Best Restaurant awards each year, is a collection of jaw-droppingly attractive — and often shockingly expensive — hostelries from every corner of the globe, including two in NYC.
Bangkok’s long-running reputation for hotel hospitality appears to be in safe hands at the 101-room Capella, opened in 2020. All rooms face the Chao Phraya River at the property, which reviewers said “exudes the elegance of a grande dame” while offering the “intimacy of a boutique hotel.”
Voting on the list is conducted by 600 people sitting anonymously on regional panels of hoteliers, travel journalists and seasoned luxury travellers, according to the organization. Votes are based on stays within a previous 18-month voting period. Voting is reportedly confidential, all the way up until the list announcement.
“It gives us enormous pleasure to share the list of The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2024 and to celebrate Capella Bangkok’s ranking as No.1,” Emma Sleight, Head of Content for The World’s 50 Best Hotels said in a written statement.
“This year’s dynamic list underscores the appetite for a range of experiences, from busy city breaks to far-flung escapes, and honours the dedication and passion of the staff who make these exceptional experiences possible, while highlighting the remarkable breadth of talent in the industry worldwide,” Sleight said.
Rates at the Capella Bangkok start at $600 per night, the organization noted.
New York was nudged toward the nether regions of the prestigious list by dazzling spots like the “sumptuous” Passalacqua on Lake Como in Italy (No. 2), tucked into an “18th-century villa whose former premises housed Pope Innocent X.”
The highest the Big Apple could manage was No. 30, a slot awarded to the Upper East Side’s storied Carlyle , which reviewers called “an enduring symbol of elegance and sophistication in a discerning city.”
On 57th Street, the austere Aman — famed locally for the cast of characters involved in its development and a $135 million penthouse on the residential side that was the city’s most expensive property sold in 2023 — landed at No. 37.

Why Thousands of Haitians Have Settled in Springfield, Ohio
Businesses needed workers, and Haitians, many already authorized to work, heard living costs were low. But the newcomers have strained resources, and that has fueled tension.

Miriam Jordan reported recently from Springfield, Ohio.
Over the last few years, many immigrants from Haiti have settled in Springfield, Ohio, drawn by the low cost of living and plentiful jobs. But the pace and volume of Haitian newcomers have strained local resources and stirred some tensions. And now, ahead of the presidential election, the city has found itself caught up in the fiery debate over immigration.
JD Vance, the Republican nominee for vice president, invoked Springfield in July to criticize the Biden administration’s border policies. That month, the city’s mayor and manager went on the cable news program “Fox & Friends” calling for assistance to handle an influx that they blamed on the federal government. Then, during the presidential debate last week, former President Donald J. Trump repeated a debunked claim about Haitians in Springfield abducting and eating household pets.
What’s behind the rise of Haitians in Springfield?
Thousands of new jobs had been created there, thanks to a successful effort by the city’s leadership and Chamber of Commerce to attract new business to Springfield, which sits between Columbus and Dayton. Once a manufacturing hub, Springfield saw its economy shrink after factories closed and jobs migrated overseas. By about 2015, its population had dwindled to under 60,000, from about 80,000 in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Companies that set up shop, however, confronted a dire labor shortage.
Haitians in Florida, Haiti and South America heard from friends and family about Springfield and its need for workers. They began arriving to take jobs in warehouses, manufacturing and the service sector, and employers urged the new workers to encourage other Haitians to join them.
What started as a trickle swelled to a surge after the Covid-19 pandemic, coinciding with deepening political and economic instability in Haiti after the assassination of the president in 2021.
How many Haitians live in Springfield?
Estimates range between 12,000 and 20,000, according to city officials who have spoken with The Times. The estimates are based on data from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Springfield’s public schools, health care providers in the area and social service agencies, the officials said. While South Florida, Boston and New York have long had large concentrations of Haitians, they have also settled in sizable numbers elsewhere in Ohio, as well as in Indiana, Kentucky and other states.
How did the immigrants in Springfield arrive in the United States, and with what immigration status?
Most Haitians in Springfield are in the United States legally, city officials said.
Even though there have been periods of relative calm in Haiti, that nation has long been plagued by political turmoil and violence, with periods of foreign occupation and exploitation, decades of dictatorship and a succession of humanitarian crises. Haitians have been emigrating in large numbers for a long time, seeking refuge and opportunities in the United States, as well as in other countries including Brazil, Canada, Chile and Mexico.
Some of the Haitians in Springfield have lived in the United States for many years and have permanent legal status, or green cards. Some crossed the southern border or flew directly to the United States over the last few years.
Many are beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status, a federal designation that gives nationals of a country in crisis — typically after a natural disaster or political upheaval — the opportunity to remain in the United States legally, regardless of whether they entered the country lawfully.
The Biden administration granted Temporary Protected Status through Feb. 3, 2026 for Haitians who arrived in the United States on or before June 3, 2024, and that status can be renewed. Haiti is one of a number of countries whose nationals can qualify for TPS, including Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia and is at war.
Some of the Haitians in Springfield have applied for asylum, which allows them to remain in the country until their case has been adjudicated by immigration authorities. Still others have been aided by a Biden administration initiative that enables people from Haiti who have a financial sponsor in the United States to apply to enter the country and remain here legally for two years. They do not receive green cards.
The various programs made many of the Haitian newcomers to Springfield eligible to work legally, making them particularly attractive to employers.
Under federal law, many Haitian immigrants in Springfield are entitled to receive some public benefits, such as Medicaid and food stamps.
What challenges has Springfield faced as a result of the rapid growth of its immigrant population?
Springfield has struggled to handle soaring demand placed on health care, housing, schools and roads.
Some initiatives already underway include offering English language classes, driving courses and instruction about finances and the U.S. banking system.
Gov. Mike DeWine announced last week that the state would provide Springfield with $2.5 million to ease strains on primary health care and would deploy members of the state highway patrol to improve road safety.
The mayor of Springfield, Rob Rue, said that he was still hoping to receive federal assistance.
