Famously known as the ‘Queen of Satpura’, Pachmarhi sits pretty amid the Satpura range at 1100 m (3608 ft) in Madhya Pradesh. Adorned with gorgeous waterfalls and ancient caves, there are plenty of captivating places to visit in Pachmarhi.

This charming hill station was discovered in 1857 by James Forsyth, a British Army Officer. It once served as the summer capital for the Central Provinces during British rule in India.

Pachmarhi gets its name from the Hindi words ‘Pach’ (five) and ‘Marhi’ (caves). The history of Pachmarhi dates back to the Mahabharata era.

Legend has it that the Pandavas excavated these 5 caves for their shelter when they were passing through Pachmarhi during their fourteen years of exile.

It is listed as Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO for the abundance of flora and fauna in the region.

I decided to explore this hill town towards the end of March which is the beginning of the summer season in many parts of India. But, the weather was pleasantly cold and sunny in the daytime and nights were a bit colder.

If you are looking for that perfect two-day Pachmarhi itinerary, here is the one well-crafted for you. Scroll down to know which are the popular places to visit in Pachmarhi in a two-day trip.

Best Places To Visit in Pachmarhi

The pristine town of Pachmarhi is irresistible with its refreshing weather and stunning landscapes. This well-designed itinerary will help you cover the most prominent attractions of Pachmarhi in two days.

Start your day by visiting Apsara Vihar, if you wish to visit the waterfalls first. Another option is to start with Pandav caves, so you can visit the day 2 attractions on day 1.

1. Apsara Vihar

Apsara in Hindi literally means ‘fairy’. Encircled by hills and verdant forests, true to its name Apsara Vihar feels like a fairyland. You can hire a gypsy from Pachmarhi town to reach here.

A fantastic nature trail through the forests takes you there. From the gypsy drop point, there is around 0.5 km of trekking to go to the Apsara Vihar waterfall.

Plunging down a height of 30 ft, the waterfall forms a shallow pool at the base which is perfect for leisurely swimming. On the same trekking route, I stumbled upon another charming pool known as Panchali Kund.

The entire place is heavenly and the trek was so refreshing that I didn’t feel even a bit tired. Apsara Vihar is indeed one of the most scenic places to visit in Pachmarhi.

Here is an interesting thing about this falls. A few scenes of a famous Bollywood song ‘san sanana…’ from the movie Ashoka were picturized here.

Tip: There are no shops or eateries around in this complete stretch. Remember to carry drinking water, especially if you are traveling with kids.

2. Rajat Prapat

Also known as Silver falls, Rajat Prapat is another breathtaking waterfall cascading down with a single drop from a massive 351 ft height. It is known as the 30th highest waterfall in India.

From Apsara Vihar waterfall, it is almost a km trek to Rajat Prapat. Experience the magnificence of the falls from the opposite side as no one is allowed to go near the base of the falls.

It is a perennial waterfall, so there is always some water even in summer. Come monsoon, the grandeur of the falls grows manifold.

3. Reechgarh

After experiencing the splendour of the Pachmarhi waterfalls, head over to Reachgarh. Locals say that Reechgarh used to be the home of bears long ago. It derives its name from Reech (meaning ‘beer’) and Garh (meaning ‘home’ or ‘abode’).

Reechgarh is a short drive from Apsara Vihar. It involves a few meters of climbing down through a rough and steep pathway. But don’t miss this gem of nature, it is one of the best places to visit in Pachmarhi.

Once you reach there, get rewarded with awe-inspiring views of natural rock formations. This place is believed to have been inhabited by early humans from the stone age. Spend some time exploring this natural wonder.

4. Bee Falls

The majority of tourist attractions in Pachmarhi involve some bit of climbing up and down. Bee falls is no exception and one needs to climb down nearly 400 uneven steps to get there.

Undoubtedly, Bee falls is one of those places to visit in Pachmarhi that will unleash the adventurer in you.

Set against densely wooded forests, this 150 ft high waterfall presents an enchanting picture to the visitors.

The plunge pool at the base is home to numerous tiny fishes. So if you put your feet in the water, they love doing a free pedicure for the guests. 🙂

Tip: You may skip this if you are traveling with kids and senior citizens. It involves an arduous trek to visit this attraction.

5. Pachmarhi Lake

One of the most serene places to visit in Pachmarhi, this picturesque lake lies in the heart of the town. Enjoy a scenic boat ride in the lake or indulge in adventurous water sports, like banana ride and speed boat.

Though the lake is not quite known as sunset point, the picture-perfect background of the lake stands out during sunset.

6. Jata Shankar Caves

The mystical Jata Shankar caves are an important place of worship for the devotees of Lord Shiva. It houses a naturally-formed Shivlingam and a rock structure looking like the hundred-headed snake, known as Sheshnag.

Almost all the caves in Pachmarhi have some mythological stories associated with them. According to legends, it is believed that these caves hid Shiva from a demon named ‘Bhasmasura’.

The caves derive its name from Jata (matted hair) and Shankar (another name of Shiva). Explore different rock-cut structures resembling the matted hair of Shiva. This place is not more than 20 minutes drive from Pandav caves.

7. Pandav Caves

An iconic landmark of Panchmarhi, Pandav Caves are believed to be home to the Pandavas during their days of exile. The five caverns situated on a hillock are named after the five Pandavas brothers.

It is located in the center of the town and is easily accessible by road. You need to climb up through rock-cut stairs to reach the caves. Entry into the caves is not allowed but you can click photographs from outside.

A beautiful garden at the base of the cave enhances the beauty of the surroundings. The panoramic views from the top of the cave will leave you mesmerized.

8. Rajendra Giri

Next, you can visit Rajendra Giri which is roughly 10 minutes drive from the Pandav cave location.

It’s a beautiful botanical garden named after the first president of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The garden also houses a statue of him.

It offers splendid views of the Satpura range from the hilltop. You will love this place if you admire colourful flowers and plants.

Tip: Though Rajendra Giri is also popular as a sunset point, Dhupgarh sunset is considered one of the best in Pachmarhi. Try visiting Dhupgarh for watching a gorgeous sunset view.

9. Handi Khoh

Head over to Handi Khoh next. Set amid the lush green dense forest, Handi Khoh is one of the most popular places to visit in Pachmarhi. It got its name from Handi (pot) as the ravine resembles the shape of a pot.

Handi Khoh is a viewpoint which offers spectacular views of the 300 ft gorge. If you drop a stone in it, you may not hear the dropping sound immediately but only after a few seconds.

10. Bade Mahadev Cave

This 60 ft long cave, known as Bada Mahadev Cave hosts a temple of Lord shiva. As per mythical stories, this cave is the place where Lord Vishnu killed the demon Bhasmasura.

The continuous dropping of water from the cave walls forms a pool, considered as sacred. It is believed that taking a dip in this pool exonerates one from all sins.

11. Gupt Mahadev Cave

Also known as Chhota (small) Mahadev, Gupt Mahadev is a 40 ft long cave situated about a km away from Bada Mahadev cave.

A narrow winding pathway leads to the shrine of Lord Mahadev (Shiva). The small crevices inside the cave make the walk exciting.

You need to literally squeeze yourself to move ahead. For adventure seekers, it is one of the must-visit places in Pachmarhi.

There are a number of resorts in Pachmarhi, operated by Madhya Pradesh Tourism (MPT).

We stayed in Champak Bungalow which is located near the Pachmarhi lake. The resort is well maintained and beautiful. They have tent cottages to provide a camping experience to the guests.

Apart from MPT-run hotels, there are many private resorts in Pachmarhi.

You can check WelcomHeritage Golf View . It is a nice mid-range resort located in the heart of Pachmarhi town. The Pandav Cave is about 5 minutes drive from here.

The resort offers standard rooms as well as suite rooms. They also arrange sightseeing excursions on request.

History of Pachmarhi

The Pandavas of the Mahabharata are known to have lived in the panch (five) madhis (caves), hence the name Pachmarhi. According to legend, the Pandavas spent much of their exile in the five caves. Pachmarhi had faded from public consciousness until the early colonial era when a British captain of the Bengal Lancers stumbled upon its unspoilt beauty. Captain James Forsyth and his soldiers faced off against the powerful Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi in 1857. But along the way, his troops encountered unexpected terrain. Lush green undergrowth replaced the barren tree trunks and dry yellow grass. Ferns and moss covered the damp banks of streams that flowed with clean, cool mountain water, providing a welcome respite for his thirsty and exhausted warriors.

Forsyth described this mountain beauty as "as far as the eye can see lie range upon range of forest-covered hills, tumbled in wild confusion."

Places to visit in Pachmarhi

1. bee falls.

Pachmarhi is home to a number of stunning waterfalls, with Bee Falls being one of the most popular. Known as Jamuna Prapat, it supplies water to the historic centre of Pachmarhi. You have to climb over 400 steps to reach this waterfall. However, it is well worth the effort as the 150-foot waterfall offers some of the most breathtaking scenery you will ever see. The nearby pool is full of small fish and many people dip their feet in for a free, all-natural pedicure. However, use additional care around young children and the elderly as the presence of algae makes the ground extremely slippery.

2. Satpura National Park

Put your hat on, grab your binoculars, and buckle up for an exciting trip in the Jipsee through Satpura's lush, green forests, where you might be able to see tigers roaming free and the rare black giant squirrel. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it is also home to numerous leopards, bison, wild boars, and more than 1300 different plant species. The Denwa River flows through the centre of the park, adding to the beauty of the landscape when you are on the safari. There is a Rs. 1250 entry fee for Indian citizens to enter the park, which is open from 8 AM to 6 PM.

3. Dhoopgarh

No trip is complete without watching a stunning sunset with your loved ones. Dhoopagrah is the highest point in the Satpura range, rising to a height of 1352 m. We are sure it will be one of the most breathtaking sunsets you have ever seen.

4. Pandava Caves

These caves, as their name suggests, are a collection of five Buddhist temples carved out of rock that were given to five Pandavas as sanctuary during their exile. These were constructed in the ninth century, and the cave contains numerous exquisite carvings and sculptures. The cave also boasts a lovely garden with some of the most exquisite flowers you will ever see. One should take some time to enjoy the tranquillity and solitude of this location.

5. Pachmarhi Lake

One of Pachmarhi's calmest and most serene locations is this lake. The boat ride is one thing you really must not miss, and it is right in the midst of the town. Banana rides and speed boat rides are only two of the thrilling water sports that are offered here. The lake is a great place to spend time with friends and family since the scenery looks absolutely gorgeous at sunset.

Just One For The Road

Bulgaria’s Black Sea Resorts

A montenegro road trip, le mans 24 hours – then and now, rouen – the city of a hundred spires, pachmarhi travel guide, india.

Shreya Patel

This Pachmarhi Travel Guide is from guest author Shreya Patel. Here is what she had to say about Pachmarhi – a hill station in Madhya Pradesh in the very heart of India :

Pachmarhi, Queen of Satpura or Satpura ki Rani (in Hindi ), has an abundance of eye-tempting attractions to explore. Although the place is lesser known, once you visit Pachmarhi, its beauty will leave you in awe.  The good thing is that the government has kept it in the same condition, which means a plethora of unadulterated natural beauty for all travel junkies. Encompassed with lush greenery, rich wildlife, pristine waterfalls and picturesque landscapes, this Central Indian spot offers a high level of tranquillity for those who prefer hill stations over beaches.

So, being a wanderlust Indian myself, I am always keen on exploring those untraversed spots and so my curiosity led me to this beauty. I visited Pachmarhi with my family and booked a local gipsy camp to enjoy the beauty of this place better. We covered several attractions and I must say, the warmth and remarkable aura of Pachmarhi left me awestruck and happy.

In this Pachmarhi Travel Guide, I will be listing all the places you must visit when heading to this beautiful undiscovered part of India.

An Introduction to Pachmarhi

Located at a height of 1607 meters above sea level, Pachmarhi is in the second largest state, Madhya Pradesh. Since it’s the only hill station and the highest point in the state, it serves as a vantage point and is the most visited by locals and tourists across the nation.

The place is also home to wild animals – leopards and bison. The town isn’t very large and is a perfect cosy retreat for tourists from metropolitan cities.

Pachmarhi Travel Guide Facts

Some amazing fun facts I learned about this place are:

Pachmarhi was named a Biosphere reserve by UNESCO in May 2009.

A lot of cave paintings found in the caves of Pachmarhi are believed to be about 10,000 years old.

Dhoopgarh is the highest peak point of this hill station. During my trip, I visited here during sunset, and I can say that the views from the peak were unmatchable.

The name of this place, Pachmarhi, is derived from the words “Panch (Five) and Marhi (Caves)”.

Many Bollywood movies have been shot in this beautiful location. When I visited Reechgarh, a local guide told me that scenes of the popular movie Ashoka the Great, (starring Shah Rukh Khan & Kareena Kapoor), were shot here.

Bee Falls Pachmarhi

Amongst the count of waterfalls, the Bee Falls Pachmarhi is the most renowned. Also known as Jamuna Prapat, it offers the most extreme tranquillity one could ask for. The hiking trail, which is a wonderland in itself, leads visitors to this waterfall. Amid the trail, you’ll see 2-3 picturesque spots. Tourists here can be often found pushing and shoving to get a click with the mesmerizing view, especially the first-timers.

People sit and relax by the brooklet, while many dip their feet in the water and enjoy fish offering a very natural and free pedicure. It may be a little exhausting to hike down to the Bee Falls Pachmarhi, but as you arrive, the drizzle from the fall, the soothing sounds of gushing water, and the view will be enough to take away the fatigue.

Jatashankar Caves – A Lord Shiva Temple

The Jatashankar Caves is the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage site. It is said to be the place where Lord Shiva concealed himself from the wrath of Bhasmasur. Although it’s a long walk to reach the temple entrance, it’s all worth it. On the way to the entrance, you will come across street sellers selling different items such as pipe fryums, papad, labdo ber, and herbal oil.

Here at the Jatashankar Caves, water seeps from the rock above and flows into the temple’s courtyard, making one’s feet numb. You may come across a lady, who sits on the cliff, and chants mantras of Lord Shiva, and her voice echoes can be heard throughout the entire cave. There is a cave built in the rock, from which you have to stoop to reach and worship before the idol of Lord Shiva.

Jatashankar Caves, India

Bade Mahadev Caves

Sitting in the lap of rugged nature is this Lord Shiva shrine, which goes by the name of the Bade Mahadev Caves. The temple also consists of the idols of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Ganesha, which are of major significance in the Hindu religion. At the entrance to the cave, there is a lot of Trishuls and Damru, symbolizing the tenacity of Lord Shiva.

Natural water streams inside the cave, which forms a holy pool. It is believed that whoever bathes in this pool, can wash away their sins. Here also, you will have to stoop to get to the end point of the cave, where you will find the idol of Mahadev and all the above-mentioned Gods.

As an extra travel tip for your visit to the Bade Mahadev Caves, beware of the monkeys roaming around, as they can snatch your food and bag.

Bade Mahadev Caves, India

Pandav Gufa Caves

Pandav Caves or Gufa are well renowned and have a reference to Indian mythological characters Pandavas, hence the name. These caves are said to be the place where Pandavas ( 5 sons of Kunti ) stayed during their exile period. It is now a protected tourist spot, and people from all over India visit here to witness this place. Built in the 9th century, these caves are adorned by beautiful sculptures and ancient carvings.

A pathway from a large beautiful garden leads to the Caves.  Here you can see a group of five small caves, covered with grills, and carved on a hilltop. The caves are covered with lush greenery and provide a tranquil aura away from bustling cities.

This was, however, the least interesting place for me in Pachmarhi.

Pandav Gufa, India

Reechgarh is a huge cave hidden in the folds of Pachmarhi. A myth says that a giant bear (reech in Hindi) used to live in this cave, and hence, a local legend gave this place the name Reechgarh. Here you’ll get to see sunshine peeking through craggy rocks, making it a beautiful place to take pictures. The climb above the cave offers vistas of lush greenery and this cave serves as a natural air conditioner since a cool wind blows through them.

However, to enjoy the best views of this place, you will have to hike down through the streak boulders. And, while doing so, you need to be very careful to avoid tripping over.

Dhoopgarh is the highest point in Pachmarhi and is located at a height of 1352 meters. It serves the most eye-tempting views of the place. It is the best place to admire sunrises and sunsets, and hence, most people come here during these times only. The vistas are truly incredible, and people often enjoy this view with snacks and tea.

However, you can only reach here by trekking up to the peak. The route isn’t easy either. The path passes through certain waterfalls and valleys, therefore making the way as steep and challenging as you can imagine.

For first-time visitors it’s best to visit Dhoopgarp with an experienced Pachmarhi Travel Guide, as the hike can be a little overwhelming.

Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh, India

Being one of the most beautiful ravines in central India, Handi Koh is a v-shaped ravine covering a 300-foot-deep precipice in the heart of a dense forest. This place has a rich mythological history and is said to be closely linked with Lord Shiva. Although it was said to be a lake earlier, it dried up due to the wrath of a giant snake. Now Handi Koh is well known for hiking, trekking, horse riding, and photography.

Here you will get a view from the cliff of a ravine laden with trees, and greenery. Local people will hand over binoculars and telescopes for a fee. Indigenous people use a rope to get down into the jungle to get herbs for medicinal virtues.

Handi Koh, Pachmarhi, India

Best Time to Visit Pachmarhi

The best time to visit Pachmarhi is anytime year-round, thanks to its pleasant weather and topography. The days here are pleasant with chilly nights, which makes it a perfect getaway destination. However it would be best to avoid the monsoon (July to September) since the precipitation is quite high in this region.

In my experience, the best time to visit Pachmarhi would be in the summer season (April to June), which is perfect to escape the dry heat of the plains. Not only is it less crowded, but it also tends to be much cooler as compared to other hotter parts of the country. The weather is just as perfect as any hill station encounters. Plus, what’s the best time to enjoy playing around in waterfalls? It’s always the summer.

How to Reach Pachmarhi

Being the only hill station of Madhya Pradesh, it’s the most visited and hence is well connected with major cities of the region. Bhopal is one of the nearest cities to reach here (210 km). Those taking a flight from Delhi, Mumbai or any other Indian city, can utilize Raja Bhoj Airport to reach Bhopal and then take a taxi to Pachmarhi (which is a 4-hour drive).

If you’re someone who prefers travelling by train, then a useful Pachmarhi Travel Guide tip is to take a train to reach Pipariya Railway Station, the closest to Pachmarhi (only 54 km). This train station is linked directly with several major stations including Varanasi, Surat, Delhi, Nagpur, Kolkata, etc. When you reach Pipariya, take a taxi to Pachmarhi and you will reach in about an hour.

If you prefer a road trip, then you are most welcome to bring your vehicle. Although driving can be exhausting, you will get to enjoy the stunning vistas as you drive. Remember that the travelling time will depend upon the traffic and whether you make stops in the middle.

For the road route, you can also opt for a bus ride. Yes, several state-owned and private buses are accessible for Pachmarhi from nearby cities like Bhopal, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Indore, and renowned tourist attractions like Kanha National Park and Pench National Park. Being a cantonment town, the road conditions here are quite phenomenal.

Accommodations in Pachmarhi

It makes sense that being a popular spot amongst the locals and tourists, there are a handful of accommodations accessible in Pachmarhi. From budget stays to chic hotels, there is a suitable option for everyone. That said, budgeted hotels are available for a stay starting from INR 600 to INR 1500. Although these hotels are affordable the quality of stay provided isn’t questionable.

But for me, the budget wasn’t the issue, so I decided to book a lavish hotel. And since hill stations call for a chic stay with a mind-blowing view from the balcony, I went for a hotel that offers the same. Fortunately, there are plenty of incredible options nearby Satpura National Park, Dhoopgarh, and Pandav Caves. And since hill stations call for a chic stay with a mind-blowing balcony view, I went for a hotel that offers the same.

Final Takeaway

I have always preferred natural beauty over man-made attractions and this place offered it all. And indeed, a trip to a cosy hill station can better rejuvenate your entire soul. Pachmarhi is truly a gem brimming with a myriad of remarkable attractions and offers the most tranquil vistas you could ask for.

The best thing I realized here was that even with an excessive population, such a mesmerizing gift of nature still exists in the country. If you’re in India or ever plan to visit here, then make sure to spend some time exploring the beauty of this hill station.

Not only will this place offer you peace, but will take you a step closer to the tales of Indian mythology. I will also recommend you carry strong grip shoes for rugged trails, sunglasses and a hat to avoid being smothered in dust, as well as some motion sickness tablets.

Pachmarhi -15 best places to visit in pachmarhi.

Tallest Waterfall Of Pachmarhi

One of the most visited destinations in Madhya Pradesh is the hill station of Pachmarhi. Having lost count on the movies in which I could spot this beautiful strip of land, this fact didn’t come across as much of a surprise either. Along with this comes the creamy frosting of being recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

A dreamy hill station enveloped by little greens and a pleasant breeze.

Tropical climate toned down by the sprinkles of freshness from the waterfalls.

Single drop to tiered falls leading to natural pools waiting to calm your senses.

One of the richest and exotic portions of a national park, enhanced by natural caves ornamented by murals.

If the imagery isn’t convincing you enough to pack your bags, let me take you through 15 such magical places that would do the work.

Table of Contents

Top 15 places to visit

1. rajat prapat.

Distance: 6.5 km

Opening Hours: 10 am – 6pm

The tallest waterfall of Pachmarhi and the 30th highest in India is the Big Fall or more commonly known Rajat Prapat . Falling gracefully from a height of 106 metres, it flows straight through a gorge that’d bring a shimmer to your eyes with its silver streaks.

A good amount of time can be spent during the golden hours watching the waterfall create a beautiful show of reflections. What makes this place a must-visit is that it can be both calming and adventurous at the same time.

Taking prior permission from the forest department, you can trek your way up to these majestic falls. It can be quite challenging and risky during the monsoon downpours, so choose an appropriate time for the visit based on your trekking experience.

2. Pandav Caves

Distance: 1.2 km

Opening Hours: 8:30 am – 5:30 pm

Tracing back to the exile of Pandavas, there are five rock-cut temples built in honour of the five brothers. Believed to have been built as a shelter during their exile period, it was later inhabited by Buddhist monks for meditation.

Resonating with a mystical vibe, the place is home to simple and subtle carvings.

The temple can be spotted amidst the forests of Pachmarhi  and has an attractive floral garden right around the entrance.

Set against the grand Satpura ranges, these humble caves are a beautiful contrast and definitely, a must-visit.

Pandav Caves are also believed to be the place from where the name of the hill station was derived – “ Panch” meaning five and “ Marhi” means caves. So Pachmarhi was a contribution of the five caves where the history of this hill station was unearthed.

3. Bee fall

Distance: 4.4 km

Opening Hours: 9 am – 5 pm

While you’re metres away from this picturesque spot, you’d hear a bee-like sound, which explains the naming of the falls.

Don’t get it wrong with the annoying buzzing, it’s instead more like a rhythmic sing-song to the ears.

Cascading from an altitude of 35 metres, the waterfall is also a major source of water for the locals living around here. So while you’re around here, you can completely trust these waters and stoop down to drink out of it.

Most of the adventure junkies conduct a circuit trek from the Bee falls to Prapat Kund via Apsara falls.

There are also accompanying off-road jeep rides that’d surely give you all the right thrills and scares. Either this or you could peacefully sit by the waters and dive in for a refreshing swim.

4. The Mahadev temples

Distance: 15 km

Opening Hours: Open at all hours

Two cave temples dedicated to Lord Shiva lie not far from the hills of Pachmarhi . The 60m long caves conduct regular pooja and aarti , due to which there’s always a crowd of people here. Tourists and locals both flock down here ritually.

The place has great mythological importance as it is said that Lord Vishnu had transformed into the celestial Mohini here to kill Bhasmasura. Which makes this cave an important pilgrimage site as well as a symbol for goodness prevailing over evil.

This also reflects architecturally, as the narrow caves are quite dark until you reach the temple, where the lights reflect brighter.

Bada Mahadev and Gupt Mahadev shrines are among the oldest in Pachmarhi , and so would require certain caution for getting around. A flashlight would always come handy in this narrow cave. It can only accommodate one person to get through the cave at a time and is wider around the place of worship.

5. Dhoopgarh

Distance: 4.6 km

The tallest peaks of Madhya Pradesh are the Dhoopgarh, and so they give undoubtedly the best views of the entire town. Ascending up to the peak which is located at 1350 metres above sea level, is a thrilling and fun-filled experience.

Just sitting by here and watching the sunset down upon the hill station is something you’d want to tie up your shoes and climb the hills over and over again for.

If this vacation was a getaway, these peaks are where all of it unfurls. With the unfiltered view of the Satpura Range and Mount Dhupgarh, it is an ideal spot for some relaxation and picnic.

At night, it’s even more sublime with the city lights from the neighbouring towns of Itarsi lighting up the view.

So be it a trek or a drive up to the hills, you’re in for some breathtaking taking view.

6. Chauragarh

Opening Hours: Accessible at all hours

Trek your way up to the heavenly abode of Lord Shiva in Pachmarhi. The Chauragarh Temple is on the third highest peak of Pachmarhi at an altitude of 1330 m, with above 1,000 stone stairs. An easy climb of 3 km along with a moderately difficult one for a km would lead you to this architectural masterpiece.

It’s a common sight here to watch devotees going up to the temple, holding a trident and chanting mantras. Especially during the Mahashivratri and Nagpanchami celebrations, where lakhs of Trishuls are kept in the temple as offerings. It’s a view that reflects the immense faith of people and is something that’d remain captured in your mind forever.

The holy Dharamshala, natural pond, architecture dating back to the Gond dynasty –  all of it makes the temple complemented by the Chauragarh fort, a visit you’d not want to miss out on.

7. Handi Khoh

Distance: 3.7 km

Opening Hours: 7 am – 5 pm

A canyon that’s going to catch the eye of every nature lover. En route Chauragarh, this 100m gorge can be spotted amidst hills towering at almost thrice it’s size.

The vantage point offers a clouded view of the Chauragarh and the Priyadarshini viewpoint making it a perfect pitstop with a preview of the spectacles that lay ahead.

Naturally formed were previously a lake had dried up, the gorge is shaped like a horseshoe or an earthen pot with falling edges. After which the locals named it the “Handi Khoh”.

The silence that lingers in the air here is often interrupted by the sounds from the ravine and the forests that envelopes it. The terrain of the cliffs here is ideal for trekking, cycling, hiking, horse riding and so on.

8. Apsara Vihar

Distance: 1.8 km

Opening Hours: 9 am – 3:30 pm

A small natural water pool en route to Bee Fall from Rajat Prapat. Just as celestial as its name suggests, it’s a hidden gem within the forests. Ideal for some solitary time and to enjoy the calmness of this hill station.

It’s a short trek from Rajat Prapat and is a sight to behold during the monsoon season when it cascades in all its glory.

The waters trickle down from rocky boulders and get collected up in the pool below. Being formed naturally, it has been often associated with mystical stories that gave it the name which translates to “Fairy Pool”.

Take a leap here or just sit on the dewy grass dipping your legs in the water, it’s going to be a pitstop that’d make you wish you could halt for longer.

9. Christ Church

Distance: 450 m

Opening Hours: Sunday Mass Hours

The British touch in Pachmarhi. Built around the late 1800s and early 1900s, the simple sandstone structure gives off the much-needed country vibe to the hill station. With the perfect amount of aesthetics, lattice works and stained glass windows accommodated in an otherwise humble-looking structure.

The Gothic style would strike your fancy instantly, and exploring further you’d come across more interesting stories around the church. Said to be built without even a single supporting pillar, the church has stood all tests of times and is a marvel worth visiting.

Just around the church, there’s a cemetery where you could trace the tombs back to the period of World War. So it’d be safe to say that the grave affair would surely interest the history buffs.

The church doesn’t observe frequent prayers other than the Sunday masses, but a visit just to understand the age-old architecture and craftsmanship falls on the list.

10. Reechgarh

Opening Hours: NA

Nature sure has its way with surprises, and this place remains proof to that fact.

A mysterious cavern that opens from both the ends and has everything in between that could challenge the traveller within you. Looking out for the cave amidst the dense and thickly covered forests itself is a task and then comes ahead of the actual challenge.

Scramble your way through the dirt track opening and make your way to through the cracks and crevices of the boulders that illuminate the path. It’s believed that the caves were earlier populated by the sloth bears Orr “R eech” , and it’s their natural home that we take the liberty of exploring.

Halfway through you’d be greeted by a narrow canyon that streams water during monsoons and remains drier otherwise. To make it to the other end of the cave, you’d have to pass through this canyon and trace your path to the exit.

11. Duchess fall

Distance: 7.1 km

From Reechgarh, follow the roaring sound of masses of water crashing on boulders and you’d reach this elfin waterfall.

Nestled away in the foliages with a pond of crystal clear water, this place looks right out of a fairytale land.

An arch of entwined branches towering over you and leading your path through the 2-3 hours hike. The steep inclination can be extremely difficult for some, so carry some essentials. Once you reach the falls, you could dip your legs in the pond filled with Doctor Fish that’d relax your limbs. It’s a sort of natural spa treatment, one of the other wonders of nature.

It’s quite tiring, yet really really worthwhile.

12. Pansy pool

Distance: 7 km

Opening Hours: 7 am to 6:30 pm

Picture perfect and picnic perfect. Also known as the Vanashree vihar , this small yet stunning lake offers some really good time in Pachmarhi.

Located at Denwa brook, you can carry your picnic mats to this place and savour the most beautiful sunset.

If you’re looking to pepper up a dull day, then you’ve come to the right place. With quad riding, horse riding, boating and camel riding, you’ve got just in luck to try your hand at new and exciting adventures.

There are several eateries that are lined up around, to offer warm snacks to munch on to with a cup of refreshment. Along with the spellbinding view, these cafe-like set-up’s are an addition to boost up the tourism sector, and it sure seems to be working out fine.

13. Ramaya Kund

Opening Hours: 8 am – 6 pm

How does a hilltop pool with a picturesque view sound like? You wouldn’t know until you take the leap, and here’s your chance at it.

Not farther away from Reechgarh is this beautiful series of the fresh stream. From the underground, it falls back into a K und , from where a small hike away is the Sangam/ Fuller’s Khud . This is where the waters converge and even more further goes the pools of shallow crystal waters within the deep forest.

Most people come here for a refreshing stop or a brief picnic. Splashing around the waters and sipping out of a warm flask with friends and family gives you the much-needed break.

Along with all that, watching the mountain streams coming down and converging at a common point, trying to pick out the different shades of the waters, and watching the clouds mystically reflect on the waters is something that’d leave an imprint on your diary of memories.

14. Satpura National park

Distance: 7.9 km

The 524 sq. km bewitching park coming under Satpura Tiger Reserve includes the Bori Sanctuary and the Pachmarhi Sanctuary . The home of many including the Bison, Panther, Black Buck, Blue-Bull, Four-horned deer and so on, has been conserved since the 1980s.

Since then there have been constant efforts to develop it to accommodate the tourists without bothering the wildlife.

Going on an open jeep safari or an elephant ride through the dense forest. Spotting the wildlife roam around freely. Making their way to the small rivulets flowing from the lofty peaks. Deep gorges and ravines, all of it show that they’ve managed to accommodate this beautifully in Pachmarhi.

Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or not, this park’s got activities and views that’d keep you engaged and not give space for even one dull moment for the day.

15. Bison Lodge

Distance: 1.9 km

Opening Hours: 8 am – 7 pm

Bringing the ending note to a trip has always been a difficult task, especially when it’s a place that’s so rich in every aspect of life. From culture, traditions, wildlife, architecture and so on.

Housing every bit of it is the oldest known house in Pachmarhi, the Bison Lodge. What makes this humble museum a must-visit is the priceless belongings from the forests covering the hills.

Curating graphs, maps, pictures of the Pachmarhi wildlife and floral species , stuffed animals and so much more. It becomes one of the most visited tourist attraction around here, driving for both information and interest.

A garden sits outside the lodge with a serenity and beauty similar to that of the entire hill station. Earlier it was the residence of the British Captain Forsyth, and so the house has an old-school British vibe to it, which would also fascinate you.

How to reach here

The only hill station of Madhya Pradesh.

One of the highest points around the state.

Part of the infamous Biosphere reserve at the Hoshangabad district.

All these factors make it one of the most visited tourist places around the state and a well-connected one as well.

While there’s no direct air or rail connectivity to Pachmarhi, there’s plenty of local transport available including the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation.

The nearest airport is at a 5-hour drive from Pachmarhi. The Raja Bhoj Airport at Bhopal, located at a distance of 216 km has direct flights coming in from Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Raipur, Hyderabad, etc.

The next airport at close proximity would be the Jabalpur airport that lies 256 km from the hill station.

The Pipariya Railway Station is at the closest proximity from Pachmarhi. Located not farther than 55 km from the hills, the place can be reached within an hour or so.

Pipariya station has many connecting trains from Jabalpur, Bhopal, Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Howrah, Agra, Gwalior, Ahmedabad, Nagpur and so on.

The Pipariya line remains on the Itarsi-Jabalpur rail line, which brings in the second rail option. The Itarsi railway station which is around 3 hours drive from Pachmarhi is usually preferred due to the frequency of buses and other public transport from there.

There’s an array of public transport options, which can be availed either by booking it beforehand or by arranging for one when you reach the airport or railway station. The Army Cantonment area is located quite nearby, due to which the roads are maintained well and good.

In case you’re driving down on your own, a bunch of milestones along with a proper route map would facilitate your journey.

Distance from Itarsi – 120 km (3-hour drive)

Distance from Bhopal – 206 (5-hour drive)

Distance from Nagpur – 227 km (5 and half hour drive)

Distance from Jabalpur – 250 km (6 hours 20 min drive)

Distance from Indore – 340 km (8 and half hour drive)

Best time to visit

It’s one of the surprising elements in a place which otherwise experiences a subtropical climate. Pachmarhi can be visited throughout the year based on your preference.

The ideal time to enjoy its beauty without missing out on much would be during the months between October to February. The climate is perfect, the waterfalls cascade with the post-monsoon pours, and the hills are covered with dewy greens.

Summertime is usually opted by those who would love to avoid the touristy crowd and would want to stick to a budget. This is the time the hotels do not peak their prices as there aren’t many visitors. You could also peacefully enjoy the hills taking your own sweet time, with the heat of the day and the chilling nights.

The monsoon season can be a little tricky as the place receives heavy rainfall. It’s a soothing climate complimented by the freshness of the rains. Trekking through the rain-soaked terrains and finding the trails through the blanket of mist is thrilling at the same time risky if you don’t have a guide or prior experience.
