Canada Cruises

If you’ve been looking for your next adventure, Canada should definitely be on your “to-do” list. Although it isn’t the tropical paradise that many look for in a vacation destination, it boasts a number of fun attractions.

You can walk the historic neighborhood of Old Quebec in downtown Quebec City or take a tour closer to home with Niagara Falls Canada. We also recommend a tour of the Great Lakes with our Splendor of the Great Lakes cruise.

Sticky-Sweet Fun

Whatever you decide to explore, we recommend at the very least picking up some delicious maple syrup! Canada has the perfect combination of cold spring nights and warm daytime temperatures to produce the beautiful golden syrup that we all know and love. Due to these ideal conditions, the country produces 85 percent of the world’s maple syrup .

If you’re looking to make maple syrup a part of your trip, make sure to stop by one of the many maple syrup-producing regions, Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.

Maple syrup is more than just a tasty treat, it’s an integral part of Canadian culture. During early exploration and settlement, the Aboriginal peoples of Canada taught early settlers how to harvest and produce the syrup. It was the first sugar product that was produced in eastern North America and was the sweetener of choice until cane sugar became available in 1875.

Luxury river cruising is what you make of it, so it doesn’t have to be full of adventure and syrup. We offer a number of Canada/New England cruises that leisurely sail underneath the beautiful fall foliage of the northeast. All you have to do is sit back and relax.

Canadian Cruises and COVID-19: What you need to know

If you are thinking about going on a Canadian cruise, it’s important that you first note the current COVID-19 restrictions and regulations, especially when at ports of call. For a complete list of Canada’s current marine transport COVID-19 measures, click here .

On February 15th, 2022, the Canadian Government eased the entry requirements for fully vaccinated individuals . Now, if you are a fully-vaccinated individual entering Canada, you are not required to get a COVID-19 test on arrival. Instead, you may be randomly selected to take a test. Additionally, the Government of Canada has adjusted its Travel Health Notice from a Level 3 to a Level 2.

If you would like to verify that you meet all of the entry requirements, the Canadian Government has a helpful online tool .

Fun Facts About Canada

Reader’s Digest Canada offered these interesting facts about our northern neighbors:

  • Canada is actually bigger than the European Union. That means that there is a number of sights to see.
  • Their lowest-recorded temperature was as cold as the surface of Mars. A temperature of minus 81.4 Fahrenheit was recorded in the town of Snag, Yukon, in 1947. Although you’re unlikely to experience this level of extreme cold, make sure to bring a good jacket if you’re cruising to Canada in the winter.
  • Canada boasts 10% of the world’s forests.
  • There are more lakes in Canada than any other location in the world, and with USA River Cruises, you can explore some of them.
  • Canada’s national parks are larger than some countries. Nahanni National Park Reserve in the Northwest Territories is 18,672 square miles, which makes it bigger than both Albania and Israel.

A view of a lighthouse along the Port Lawrence River

Saint Lawrence River Cruising

The nearly 1,200-kilometer (750-mile) stretch of the St. Lawrence River is a lighthouse lover’s paradise, with more than 40 of them lining the Québec portion alone. Quixotic weather and sudden choppy waters account for the building of these historic monuments, such as the one built in 1830 at Pointe-des-Monts and the Phare de Matane, both of which are now small museums.

Centuries-old fishing villages line the mighty waterway that alternates between imposing cliffs and plateaus and broad estuaries filled with fertile islets. Humans have fished the rich river and hunted its tributary lands for some 10,000 years. Much is still not known about the two dozen St. Lawrence Iroquoian tribes that had vanished by the time Québec City founder Samuel de Champlain arrived in the early 17th century. The river was a major entry point for exploring North America, and during the Seven Years' War the British navigated to Québec City to defeat the French at the Plains of Abraham. Today, some 200 miles of the river are called the whale route, along which some 13 resident species thrive, including blue, beluga and right whales.

Saint Lawrence River Cruising

The majestic Saint Lawrence River drains the entire Great Lakes Basin from its outflow at Lake Ontario, and remains tidal as far inland as Quebec City. Where it narrows, the banks are decorated with charming villages, which from the ship appear reminiscent of towns along the Seine or the Loire in France. In autumn, the hardwood forests on either shore ignite in extravagant displays of red, gold and orange fall foliage that draws visitors from around the world. In short, the Saint Lawrence has interest and beauty enough to rival any river cruising experience anywhere.

OUR CRUISES

river cruise in canada

August 26, 2024

The  Kawartha Voyageur  is currently cruising the Trent-Severn Waterway.  We still have space on our October 14-19 colour cruise from Trenton to Rosedale with parking in Peterborough.  We are currently  30%  booked for 2025.

While all remaining 2024 cruises except for our October 14-19 cruise are fully booked, we do get 2 or 3 cancellations per cruise and  there is no obligation  to place your name on the wait list for as many cruise dates as you like. There is a separate wait list set up for each cruise date that is full.  If your name comes up on a given cruise date, we will give you a call.  If the date doesn't suit when we call, we simply call the next person on the wait list for that particular cruise.

Ontario Waterway Cruises Inc. remains committed to the health, safety, comfort and enjoyment of our passengers and crew aboard the  Kawartha Voyageur.    Ontario Waterway Cruises Inc. is subject to federal transportation regulations. Transport Canada no longer requires all passengers and crew to be "fully vaccinated" against COVID-19.  We most certainly encourage our passengers to follow the guidance of our Ontario government health authorities who continue to recommend that people maintain their COVID-19 protection by taking the relative "booster shots".

The US/CDN exchange rate continues to be very favourable for our friends from the United States. The present cost of our  2024  cruises including tax is $US 2,219. (subject to change according to the exchange rate when your final balance is paid).

You may view our 2024 or 2025 cruise schedule by clicking Cruise Dates on the menu at the top of this page.  For specific information and rates on our Rideau, Quinte or Kawartha cruises, please click  CRUISES  on the menu above then select one of the three cruise routes.  Please click on the blue button labelled RATES to see the pricing.  All cruises in any given year are the same price.

2024 is our 42nd season cruising the historic waterways of Ontario.  The Trent-Severn Waterway and the World Heritage Rideau Canal have been operating since 1833.  The Trent-Severn Waterway was not fully open to thru navigation until 1920. Both waterways are part of Canada's National Parks and are open from mid-May to mid-October.

Thank you for your continued interest in our cruises here in Ontario.  Whether it be your first or a return, we look forward to welcoming you aboard the  Kawartha Voyageur  for a refreshing and memorable voyage.

As Passengers and Crew aboard the Kawartha Voyageur your comfort, health and safety are our top priority. The “Safe Travels” program allows travellers to recognize tourism businesses around the world, which have adopted a global standard of health and hygiene protocols. Classic Overnight Canada River Boat Cruising on the Canadian Empress

Classic Overnight Canada River Boat Cruising on the Canadian Empress

River Boat Cruising on Canadian Empress

The Canadian travel industry opened its doors this spring to welcome double-vaccinated travelers from Canada and abroad, as pandemic numbers decline and health and safety restrictions continue to be relaxed in Ontario and around the world.

Canada-based St. Lawrence Cruise Lines is thrilled that so many folks are ready and eager to travel again, with their 2022 season aboard the 66-passenger Canadian Empress completely sold out.

In fact, the 2023 calendar is filling up fast too. For the best choice of cabins, book your 2023 Canadian Empress cruise now .

Remember, there are only 32 cabins on Canadian Empress, with a limited number of the Ottawa staterooms (second deck), Sterling rooms (corner rooms with five windows), and Premier rooms (double bed instead of twin beds).

Why St. Lawrence Cruise Lines?

This Kingston, Ontario-owned tour operator was founded by local business owner Robert Clark in 1981.

St. Lawrence Cruise Lines continues to be family-owned and operated, offering travelers their expertise in overnight calm water Canada river boat cruising on the St. Lawrence River and adjacent inland waterways.

“The river is our home. We have known it and loved it for more than 40 years and we want to share it,” says President Jason Clark.

Small Ship Cruise Lines Leading the Way

While it was especially challenging for the large international cruise companies to operate their megaships in 2020 and 2021, small-ship cruise lines led the way throughout the pandemic.

In Canada, small ships carrying less than 100 passengers were able to remain active due to their size and their ability to implement strict and effective health and safety regulations in line with federal and provincial standards.

With an experienced all-Canadian crew and routes that stay in Canadian waters, St. Lawrence Cruise Lines successfully operated for one month in 2020 and four months in 2021 with robust health and safety standards.

For 2022, the full season — May through October — is operating.

“We are excited to offer travellers a small-ship cruising alternative in beautiful Canada. And we’re proud that our COVID-19 Health and Safety program has been recognized for its high standards, including being awarded the Safe Travels Stamp by the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO) for adherence to global standards of health and safety,” says Clark.

Relax & Rejuvenate Aboard the Canadian Empress

With the comfortable and cozy 66-passenger Canadian Empress as your home base, explore the passages and channels of the Thousand Islands. Or follow the majestic St. Lawrence Seaway into the heart of Montreal and Quebec City, passing through seven seaway locks.

A selection of 4- to 7-night cruises depart from Kingston, Ottawa, and Quebec City, and travel exclusively in domestic Canadian waters, stopping at ports such as Brockville, Prescott, and Morrisburg in Ontario, and Montebello, Montréal and Trois Riviéres in Quebec.

While cruising between ports, relax on deck to soak up the natural and urban landscape along the way, while observing the fascinating life on the water, from pleasure boats to freighters.

RELATED: A new 7-night “Seaway Discovery Cruise” is on the schedule for August 19-26 (2023) between Kingston and Montreal, with a focus on the shared history and economic significance of the St. Lawrence Seaway for Canada and the United States.

The atmosphere aboard the classic riverboat is warm and friendly and the crew is well-trained to deliver top notch service while keeping passengers comfortable and safe.

All Canadian Empress staterooms have access to fresh air, climate controls, and an intimate view of the river.

To get a first-hand account, read writer Judi Cohen’s review of her Canadian Empress cruise last summer, when she sampled this very special small-ship cruise for the first time.
