“This Is Not A Drill is a groundbreaking new rock and roll/cinematic extravaganza, performed in the round, it is a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to Love, Protect and Share our precious and precarious planet home.  The show includes a dozen great songs from Pink Floyd’s Golden Era alongside several new ones, words and music, same writer, same heart, same soul, the same man. Could be his last hurrah. Wow! My first farewell tour! Don’t miss it”.  Love R.

“Concertgoers on their way out could be heard debating whether or not this is the best tour they’ve seen from Waters. One thing’s for certain, it’s not to be missed – and a show which will leave you deep in thought about both the world and yourself." ~ Ultimate Classic Rock

“Waters succeeded two-fold. First, by plastering awareness on the atrocities that the human race has continued to endure – most of which could be avoided without greed, gluttony and warmongering. And secondly with a well-curated display of his, often-dubbed, musical genius...One can never be disappointed by a Roger Waters production and this show was no exception." ~ Glide Magazine

Roger Waters at AO Arena

roger waters tour manchester

Roger Waters at Manchester Arena , Manchester 10 June 2023 Tickets from £98.50 — Book now

Pink Floyd legend Roger Waters continues his This Is Not A Drill tour at Manchester’s AO Arena , bringing both solo and Pink Floyd material to the city for the first time in five years.

Following Syd Barrett’s 1968 departure from Pink Floyd, Roger Waters quickly emerged as the band’s grand conceptualist, and the driving force behind blockbuster albums like Dark Side of the Moon , Wish You Were Here and The Wall . A formidable songwriter with a sober morality and sardonic sense of humour, Waters, via his band, is responsible for some of the most iconic songs in rock music, from ‘Us & Them’ to ‘Comfortably Numb’ to ‘Wish You Were Here’.

Leaving Pink Floyd after 1983’s The Final Cut , Waters continued to put out brilliant work as a solo artist, recording an acclaimed triptych of concept albums between 1984 and 1992: The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking , Radio K.A.O.S. and Amused to Death . All of these wedded musical genius to pressing political struggles – something, it seems, will always be a marker of Waters’ art.

After a long period spent composing classical music, engaging in activism and reviving his classic Pink Floyd albums in the form of increasingly grandiose live spectacles, Waters teamed up with producer Nigel Godrich (most famously the cornerstone of Radiohead ) to record Is This the Life We Really Want? in 2018. The album featured some of Waters’ best solo writing to date, imbued with the then-75-year-old’s pleasingly weathered, gracefully gruff voice. Not quite late-era Johnny Cash but getting there.

A plea for sanity in a world whose moral compass broke some time ago, tunes like ‘The Last Refugee’ showed us Waters the poet, weaving lines that stand up to anything he’s written – “While bathing belles soft/ Beneath hard bitten shells/ Punch their iPhones/erasing the numbers of redundant lovers.” And even casual fans could spot his characteristic way with melody and harmony, evoking the jagged parts of Wish You Were Here and Animals , when his melodic instinct was arguably at its best.

Waters’ This Is Not A Drill tour, originally planned for 2020, draws from that last album and other solo efforts (including brand new songs like ‘The Bar’), but more heavily from Pink Floyd’s golden era. In terms of production, it is, by all accounts, incredibly ambitious. Centred around the most pressing social issues of our day, from permanent war to police violence, it’s a show that harks back to an era when artists’ moral authority was not compromised by commercial interests; Waters is and always will be fierce against the forces of oppression.

The man himself describes the show as “a groundbreaking new rock and roll/cinematic extravaganza, performed in the round” and “a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to Love, Protect and Share our precious and precarious planet home.”

Now pushing 80, the whisperers are wondering whether this will be Waters’ last tour. As he says above the archetypal ticking clocks and beating hears of ‘When We Were Young’, the opener of Is This the Life We Really Want? , “Who gives a fuck, it’s never really over”. Echoing that sentiment in typically sardonic fashion, he recently referred to the This Is Not A Drill his “first farewell tour”. And yes, while there might be another opportunity to catch the genius that is Roger Waters live, there might not be. Why not take the opportunity now.

Roger Waters: AO Arena, Manchester – Live Review

roger waters tour manchester

Roger Waters AO Arena, Manchester 10th June 2023

Roger Waters at Manchester Arena. Some gigs just have everything; great music, empathetic, stunning visuals complementing lyrical intensity and outstanding musicianship. Add to this political controversy, a celebratory atmosphere tinged with sadness and raw emotion, and you have something very special .

Outside the gig there are conflicting protests. Those who want to ban the gig and those who oppose them. Inside, as the lights dim, there’s an uncompromising message. It’s delivered audibly and flashed across giant screens. “If you’re one of those, ‘I love Pink Floyd but can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people, you might want to fuck off to the bar right now.” Surely there’s a contradiction here. A bedrock of politics underlies much of Pink Floyd’s classic work. Animals (a homage to George Orwell) and The Wall are awash with political opinion. Dark Side Of The Moon too has its moments. Money is an outright attack on capitalist greed, while Us And Them speaks for itself. If you deny politics or it simply passes you by, you’re only getting half the picture when it comes to Pink Floyd.

For the record, I do like Pink Floyd’s music. I do sympathise with some of Roger Water’s politics and find other aspects of his views troubling. But no, I don’t choose to fuck off to the bar. I choose to stay, engage or challenge if necessary. Water’s message may be uncompromising but at least he’s offering us choice.

Local MP Christian Wakeford has been trying to ban the gig. He’s supported by Labour Party leader, Sir Kier Starmer who’s stated that Roger Waters shouldn’t be given a platform to express his views. Starmer and the Cancel Culture movement epitomise C21 fascism; their attitude little different to Nazi’s in the 1930’s burning books in their intolerance of alternate opinions.

But enough of politics . . . for now. What of the music?

We begin with Comfortably Numb. Sombre, dimly lit, and brooding with visuals depicting faceless masses – the comfortably numb. Another Brick In The Wall brings some light, visually if not lyrically. It sees the animated Waters playing air guitar, and even dancing. It’s not such an edifying sight at his age. We’re soon back in much darker territory though. The Powers That Be combines a chugging rock riff with visuals juxtaposing faceless authoritarian forces inflicting violence on equally faceless victims. Above, there’s a role call of victim’s names.

The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range slows things with Roger at the piano and some great gospel inspired harmonies from his backing singers. Visually, we’re presented with a gallery of “War Criminals”; US Presidents and their supposed crimes. For me, some are far more contentious than others but he’s putting opinion out there, provoking discussion and debate. I could say the same a little later in relation Water’s thoughts on Julian Assange. Open political debate is a theme that new song The Bar continues; the bar or pub being an age old venue for political discourse. It’s melodic and lyrically moving; a reminder that his musical talent still burns brightly.

Things get nostalgic with Wish You Were Here and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Pink Floyd’s love letter to Syd Barrett is accompanied by evocative vintage video clips. Crazy Diamond is particularly emotional and it’s clear that Waters still misses his old school friend. During Jon Carin’s elongated, gradually building slide guitar intro and ethereal sax I find myself drifting back in time. The last time I saw these songs performed live was a long, long time ago: In July 1975 at Knebworth House. For me, they’ve lost none of their emotive power in the passing decades.

Jazz tinged piano and baaing signal the arrival of Sheep. We’re being lulled into a sense of complacency before Pink Floyd’s punk inspired ode to Orwell menacingly erupts into life. Meanwhile, a giant ruminant floats around the arena. It’s a warning to complacent sheep the world over who believe politics is irrelevant to them. It has never been more relevant.

There’s a quick break for beer before we’re into The Wall. In The Flesh rails against racism, antisemitism, and homophobia, while Run Like Hell sees the arrival (as it has for 40 years) of Waters as faux Nazi in leather greatcoat. It’s a character designed to inspire hostility. Those who label this as antisemitic are either ignorant or incapable of appreciating the material within the context of the album’s themes. The Wall is undoubtedly a deeply political work. It’s lyrically powerful but for me, the only point tonight where the energy and quality of the music dips.

Money heralds the arrival of more upbeat sounds with a spotlight on saxophonist Seamus Blake. He’s not the only one to shine. Guitarists Dave Kilminster and Jonathan Wilson are stunning throughout as they alternate leads.

Us And Them, always poignant, is beautifully enhanced by visuals. An extended instrumental coda brings a moving collage of wide ranging, thought provoking images. There are videos of Trumpian and Israeli walls, Black Lives Matter protesters juxtaposed with images of police brutality, and scenes of third world poverty alongside anti-immigration protesters. The closing moments bring a notion of coming together with unifying scenes of smiling faces dancing regardless of geography or culture. There are no words; none are necessary.

As Brain Damage and Eclipse bring Dark Side to a close, we’re presented with an ever expanding collage. Faces of the departed; executed or murdered at the hands of authoritarian regimes around the world. Through the growing sea of faces cuts a C21 version of the famous Dark Side prism. With the adapted lyric, “The lunatic is on the grass” ringing in my head as I watch, I can’t help wondering who it is? There are certainly plenty of contenders.

Before the close, Roger pauses to thank us for attending. He’s clearly emotional. Pre-gig, I’ve mixed with crew members who speak of a pervading aura of sadness in the performer and those around him. There are dates in South America this Autumn, but tonight is the final night of his UK tour. There’s a strong feeling that this will be his farewell. Tonight, his last ever UK gig. As the tour title says, This Is Not A Drill. It’s a poignant moment. Waters tells us he’s grateful that he’s managed to play, to overcome the cancel culture fascists – my words not his. He has a different word for Christian Wakeford MP.

Roger Waters: AO Arena, Manchester – Live Review

Tonight has been a very special gig. We’ve experienced some great music enhanced by stunning visuals. We’ve almost certainly said a sad farewell to a musical icon with something to say, while also witnessing a small victory for free speech. It’s a night I feel privileged to have been part of.

ROGER WATERS AN INCREDIBLE MUSICAL TALENT AND AN INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE AT AO ARENA MANCHESTER 10TH JUNE 2023

  • June 12, 2023
  • International Concert Reviews , UK Concert Reviews
  • by Desh Kapur UK-Editor/Photographer

WORDS AND IMAGES RHYS GROVER

As Manchester baked in the sun on what was one of the busiest days on the calendar for the city, Roger Waters wrapped up his US & UK tour at the AO Arena , bringing the incredible ‘ This Is Not A Drill’ tour to a close, in what was likely to be the last time we see Waters performing on UK soil. In recent times, Roger hasn’t been without controversy and complaint, and this gig was no exception. A local MP had called for the show to be banned, due to certain parts of the show, however fans had rallied in support and there was a gathering outside the arena as doors open in support of Roger and protesting against the statement that the MP had made.

The doors to Manchester’s biggest venue swung open around 6.30, and people soon took their seats, greeted by a cross shaped stage planted bang in the centre of the arena, covered by digital screens which were in darkness till the last minutes. As Waters and his incredible band take to the stage, a series of messages are displayed on the screens, including a statement from Roger himself regarding the recent controversy surrounding his Berlin performance. The final statement before ‘ Comfortably Numb ’ tore through the speakers was the two rules for the show. Phones on silent, and if you can’t separate the artists from the music, then it was probably a good time to ‘Fuck Off to the bar’.

‘Comfortably Numb’ opened the night, but Waters wasn’t anywhere to be seen, the screens covered the stage, with each corner being taken by a member of the band, as the digital screens covered the main cross section of the stage, displaying various eye catching visuals, something which has become a key part of Waters’ live performances. The lack of the main man didn’t stop the crowd from embracing the moment, and the chorus was belted out from the surrounding seats, as myself and the two other photographers were cowering to the corner of the stage, waiting for Roger to show.

The lights fell, the screens lifted and Roger and a hefty entourage took their places on the stage. Waling around as ‘ The Happiest Days of Our Lives ’ merges into ‘ Another Brick in The Wall Pt 2 ’ . From the moment he appeared, you just knew this was going to be something special. The visuals danced around above him, displaying various cinematic pieces along with messages and phrases. ‘Free Julian Assange’ was a common reoccurrence throughout the night. We only got 90 seconds to photograph the Pink Floyd bassist and ideas man, before it was exit through the car park. Camera gear stowed away, it was time to head back into the arena.

1-roger-waters-3-of-12

Taking may seat, we were now on song six, ‘ The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range ’ , a track from Roger’s 1992 album Amused To Death . This was the beauty of this setlist, there were the big hits from his Floyd days, intertwined in the most perfect manner with a varied selection of solo hits.

‘The Bar’ followed, and Roger took his time whilst introducing this one to tell some tales, express his views and really get the crowd going, ready for the onslaught of incredible tracks that were to follow. After three Solo tracks, it was back to Floyd, as ‘ Have A Cigar ’ , ‘ Wish You Were Here ’, ‘ Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX) and ‘ Sheep ’ closed out the first half of the performance. The phone torches lit up the arena for ‘ Wish You Were Here ’ as a story of the songs background and Roger’s days with Syd Barrett played on the enormous screens that hung above the stage. It’s not a Waters show without an inflatable animal of some sort, and the first of two to make an appearance was a drone controlled sheep which swirled its way around the arena before the band headed off for their interval.

Set 2 was where things really kicked up a gear. Banners were draped from the ceiling, a sheep emblazoned with ‘Screw The Poor’ was flown around the stadium, Roger came onto the stage dressed in an outfit which resembled, and took the piss out of, an SS guard, as he fires a fake machine gun into the crowd during his performances of ‘In The Flesh’ and ‘Run Like Hell’ . This is the part of the show that has raised questions and sparked the comments surrounding controversy. Those who don’t understand the message which Roger is portraying have taken offence, those who understand it have gotten fully behind it.

Again, the second half was equal parts solo career with that sprinkling of some immense Floyd tracks. ‘ Money’, ‘Brain Damage ’ and ‘ Two Suns in the Sunset ’ just a few of the songs to make an appearance in the second half of this fantastic show, which spanned nearly 3 hours including the interval of about 20 minutes or so. This was a show I knew I couldn’t miss, and having missed out last time Roger stopped off in Manchester, there was no chance I was missing it this time around, especially considering it had been labelled as his farewell tour. Whether it was or not, only time will tell, but whether Roger never performs again, or he announces a world tour tomorrow, he will always go down in history as one of the greatest live acts of all time, with an incredible musical talent.

Roger Waters

After planned concerts in Poland were cancelled amid outrage at his stance on Ukraine, the iconic founding member, lyricist, composer and creative force behind Pink Floyd returns to the UK with powerful music which highlights its message of human rights, liberty and love.

His “This Is Not A Drill" show is a groundbreaking new rock and roll/cinematic extravaganza, performed in the round; a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to love, protect and share our precious and precarious planet home. It includes a dozen great songs from Pink Floyd’s Golden Era alongside several new ones, words and music.

Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is to play across the UK next year - including Manchester Arena.

He will also play arenas in Glasgow, Liverpool and Birmingham, as well as Barclaycard presents British Summertime Hyde Park in London.

The critically acclaimed show will see the singer-songwriter, 74, bring Us + Them to Manchester Arena on July 3, 2018.

Us + Them, which is currently touring North America has garnered rave reviews – with the setlist called “spectacular” and the production referred to as “eye-popping.”

It will showcase highlights from Waters's body of work, with songs from Pink Floyd's greatest albums (Wish You Were Here, The Wall, Animals and Dark Side Of The Moon), along with tracks from his critically acclaimed new album Is This The Life We Really Want?

ON STAGE: Roger Waters

The tour title is derived from the 1974 track Us And Them, from the multi-million selling album The Dark Side Of The Moon.

It will be the first time Waters has toured Europe since The Wall Live (2010-2013).

AEG Live senior vice president James King said: "Roger Waters consistently delivers the most exciting live experience I've ever seen.

"His legendary set from Desert Trip set new standards in production that to this day stand unsurpassed."

Tickets for the UK go on sale on Friday, October 6 at 9am from Ticketmaster .

Roger Waters plays in Manchester tonight despite calls for gig to be cancelled

The rockstar lashed out at 'some f***ing Labour MP in Manchester'

Daisy Jackson

Roger Waters will perform a huge show at the AO Arena in Manchester tonight – despite repeated calls for his show to be cancelled.

The Pink Floyd founder has drawn criticism and caused outrage over claims he has been sharing anti-semitic views at his shows on the tour so far.

Even politicians have voiced their opinions on the rockstar, with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer saying he ‘fully condemns’ Waters for having ‘clearly espoused antisemitic views’.

Christian Wakeford, who serves as MP for Bury South, said he was ‘concerned’ that Roger Waters was still set to perform at Manchester’s AO Arena.

Waters himself lashed back at the labour MP, saying in a YouTube video that it was ‘insane’ that Mr Wakeford was ‘trying to get him banned from performing in Manchester’.

The musician said: “Some f***ing Labour MP in Manchester, Christian Wakeford…you are trying to get me banned from performing in Manchester. Me, the [bloke who] wrote Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here and Animals and the Wall and the Final Cut.

“And I’m really proud of it and it’s a huge body of work. And he wants to cancel my rock and roll show for my bothers and sisters in Manchester, it’s insane.

“If we shout the lie loud enough ‘Roger Waters is an antisemite’, we’ll be all right, we’ll get people to believe it, we can vilify him, we can probably destroy him and we will get him in the end.

“Well, no you won’t because it is a lie. You can gather as many f***ing morons as you want to repeat you lie, but it remains a vicious lie.”

It was in response to comments Christian Wakeford made in the House of Commons, when he said: “The city of Manchester has a rich and vibrant history in which those of different faiths and backgrounds have lived together as well as stood together through difficult times and times of division.

“So I am concerned to note Roger Waters is due to play at the AO Arena in Manchester.”

Roger Waters is best-known for being – as he would put it – the creative genius behind Pink Floyd, but 57 years after the band’s formation, he’ll be back in Manchester with his ‘This Is Not A Drill Tour’.

A brand-new rom-com set in Manchester has begun filming in the heart of the city centre and there are some recognisable names attached to it.

Manchester is no stranger to a movie set or bit of filming, with the Castlefield canals and viaduct having featured in Peaky Blinders and numerous ad campaigns, not to mention Northern Quarter doubling as New York on numerous occasions, but the latest project looks set to be based all over the city.

Film crews have been spotted along those very same canals we just mentioned, outside the likes of Evuna tapas restaurant in NQ , staging queues outside Band on the Wall, walking down Canal Street in the Gay Village and more.

Seemingly set and filmed almost entirely within the heart of various Manchester districts, the film is called CC: Emily and stars young duo Angourie Rice and Spike Fearn.

📹 | Spike Fearn and Angourie Rice filming scenes for “CC: Emily” in Manchester Gay Village, England — via Celeb Media on TikTok. pic.twitter.com/bBvmzYP7wz — Spike Fearn News (@SpikeFearnNews) September 22, 2024

Principal photography is said to have started back in August but more and more shoots have been spotted popping up at various different recognisable locations.

Rice, 23, is an Australian actor who is best known for roles in the Mean Girls remake, action comedy The Nice Guys and the new Spider-Man movies, whereas English talent Fearn (24) has most recently appeared in the Amy Winehouse biopic, Aftersun with Paul Mescal and the latest Alien film, Romulus .

As for the plot itself, the IMDb listing explains that a “lovesick musician teams up with a psychology student to find his dream girl, sparking a hilarious campus-wide frenzy that tests their hearts and ambitions.”

The conceit comes from Fearn’s character – all character names are still unknown – being given the wrong number and, as we’re sure any regular cinephile can guess already, the love story takes an unintended even if albeit predictable turn.

Not everyone is exactly happy about the space the Manchester-based rom-com is taking up though.

If it's anything like that 'CC:Emily' romcom @Working_Title are currently filming in Manchester, I'll give it a miss thank you! https://t.co/uQNtolhtHn pic.twitter.com/iAOztVcKbV — Tony 'Sunshine' Filer (@FabFiler) September 25, 2024
  • Cultplex’s annual horror film festival returns to GRUB next month for spooky season
  • The Book of Mormon at Palace Theatre – the outrageous musical that will make your jaw drop
  • Legendary composer Hans Zimmer is coming to Manchester for his Co-op Live debut in 2025

Similar complaints came from several locals when Manchester was famously taken over by the Chanel Métiers d’art show last year, though that was on a much bigger scale and did see many residents compensated for the inconvenience.

CC: Emily is being directed by Alicia MacDonald, the woman behind recent TV favourites like Stephen Merchant’s The Outlaws and will be distributed by Focus and Universal – two studios behind the likes of Shaun of the Dead and the Bridget Jones films – though there’s still no release date as yet.

This being her feature film debut after and only one of a few movie outings by writer Rachel Hirons, the equally young and still relatively unproven cast makes this an exciting original that we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on – especially since it’s filming around our way.

Along with the 90s aesthetic, the rom-com era looks to be back in full effect as another iconic franchise is also returning very soon.

A new Bridget Jones film is on the way – but a key actor won’t be returning for the fourth instalment
