14 Epic Rome Night Tours for 2024
Rome, Italy is a magnificent capital city- it is full of history, amazing food, and beautiful views. We have spent weeks exploring Rome and still discover new favorite places beyond the most famous iconic sights. Rome is especially beautiful at night when the monuments light up, and the crowds have diminished. A Rome night tour is a fantastic way to see another side of this stunning city.
We spent six weeks in Italy during our Family Year Out, when our kids were 5 and 7. We loved exploring Rome, from touring the Colosseum to eating as much pizza and pasta as possible. As full-time travelers, we have returned several times, including to check out the Christmas markets and festive lights.
Rome has a lovely temperate climate- which makes visiting any time of year a great idea. However, in the summer, it can be quite hot, and taking advantage of the cool evenings to tour Rome at night is a great way to explore the Eternal City. During the cooler Fall and Winter months, the sun sets earlier and an evening tour of Rome is a great activity before dinner.
A night tour of Rome also provides peace of mind when venturing out after dark. While Rome is a very safe city, many people feel more comfortable being out late with a group than on their own.
In this post, we’ll cover the best night tours of Rome- from night walking tours to Vespa tours, tours of the Vatican, and other specialized tours. There’s sure to be a night tour of Rome that will be the highlight of your next trip to Rome!

Why Take a Tour of Rome at Night?
We love night tours of Rome as an easy way to see some much of Rome. Here are a few of the top reasons to take a tour of Rome at night!
Rome can get hot. In the evenings, you’ll watch the sky fade to a beautiful sunset, and then the city will light up around you and you’ll enjoy cool evening breezes. And winter, when the sun sets earlier, even families with young kids can take a night tour to experience the magic of Rome at night and still not be out too late.
Fewer Crowds
In every season, the evening and night hours are less crowded than the daytime. Don’t worry though, Rome is still a lively place at night! Take advantage of after-hours to see major sites like the Colosseum, or enjoy a delicious food tour of Rome.
Making Friends
There are private tours available if you’d like to customize your night tour of Rome, but we always enjoy meeting new people on small group tours.
Expertise of a Local Guide
All of these tours provide background on Rome and the history of the city so you’ll learn something and get context for what you are seeing. In such a large city, it’s tempting to DIY your visit, but with a local guide, you’ll really appreciate the history of Rome, and know that you aren’t missing any details!
Safety at Night
Rome is a very safe city, and you should be safe walking around at night in the tourist districts. However, we always appreciate the added safety that numbers bring, and being on a tour means you don’t have to worry about where you are, or how you are getting home (and whether your cell phone is charged).
Exteriors Only
Most night tours of Rome will take you to see the outside of churches and monuments, as well as to viewpoints around the city. While many tours stop at the Colosseum for photos and to talk about the UNESCO World Heritage Site, most tours do not enter the Colosseum. The same holds true for the Roman Forum and other major sites.
Rome is magical, lit up at night- the monuments that Rome is famous for, from the Pantheon to the Trevi Fountain, all look different at night. Evening is also a great time to take a walking tour focused on the darker side of the city, or to explore the Roman catacombs and learn about hidden religious practices.
Even in the colder months, the cafes still put tables out on the sidewalks, with the addition of heat lamps and blankets in case you need them. We loved wandering around in the evenings when we visited in December. With twinkling lights and cozy cafes, this is a city that embraces the evenings all year round.

Visiting the Vatican by day means huge crowds, even with skip-the-line tickets, so visiting at night is the best way to avoid queues.
During the three-hour evening tour, your guide will show you the amazing artefacts on display at the Vatican Museums.
These include the stunning Gallery of the Candelabra, the intriguing Gallery of Maps, the Gallery of Tapestries and the (rightly) world-famous Raphael Rooms and their incredible frescoes.
Speaking of frescoes, it’s then time to step inside the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel to gaze at Michelangelo’s masterpieces in their full glory.
It’s not hard to be impressed with the sights on offer during this night-time Roman excursion.

Rome Colosseum Night Tour
- Great for balmy Roman summer nights as it’s mainly outside
- Walk around the arena floor where the gladiators actually stepped
- Spot graffiti from the middle ages
- See the once bustling market place around Trajan’s Column
- Learn about the religious and official structures at the Roman Forum
In the daytime, the Colosseum is a spectacular structure but come night, this ancient Roman ruin becomes a magical sight to behold, as it’s illuminated dramatically.
The tour actually doesn’t start at the Colosseum, but instead at the Colonna Traiana (aka Trajan’s Column), which overlooks the Roman Forum.
This tour is a great choice for those who only have one day in Rome , as it allows you to see one of the main attractions in Rome without wasting time in a queue.
The Colosseum in Rome at sunset
You’ll then move on to the Roman Forum itself – free of its usual crowds in the daytime, it’s somehow easier to imagine how it might have been in its heyday.
Then this Rome Colosseum night tour comes into its own as your guide whisks you to the main event itself. Entering the Colosseum, the illuminations highlight the grand stadium.
You’ll be able to see details like historic graffiti, imagine what it must have been like for gladiators back in the day, and snap pictures of the whole thing without tourist crowds getting in your shots.
If you can, I would pair this tour with a hotel near the Colosseum . That way you can relax in your apartment during the day, overlooking this iconic Roman sight, and then head out to explore it once the tourist crowds leave.

It’s your chance to explore the Italian capital in style on a vintage Vespa, it’s a bit on the higher end price wise, but if your Italy trip budget allows for it, this experience will be well worth it!
When I first moved to Rome by then boyfriend took me on a scooter tour of Rome at night . I can confidently say it was one of the best evenings we spent in Rome, and it made me fall in love with the city.

Rome’s Trastevere district is where it’s at for nighttime fun. Packed full of bars and restaurants, this is a local hotspot once the sun sets.
The best way to get to know this traditionally working-class neighbourhood is through its food and wine. Luckily for you, this Rome evening tour allows you to dig deep into the foodie credentials of this district.
Your knowledgeable guide will first take you to a new street food hotspot: Trapizzino (a twist on pizza and traditional triangular sandwiches served at bars).
Then it’s on to Essenza Wine Bar for cheeses, cured meats and – of course – some wine.
Passing by Santa Maria in Trastevere, you’ll head off for some wood-fired pizza (and some more wine), before finishing off the night with some artisanal gelato. It doesn’t get much better than this!

10 Best Rome Night Tours
This post covers some of the Rome night tours you can take, giving you the opportunity to learn about the city as you see it illuminated.
If you’re looking for even more to do in the evening, please read our post about things to do in Rome at night for even more ideas.
1. Self-Guided & Audio Tours
The nice thing about both self-guided and audio tours is that you can take them anytime you want, including after dark.
As a matter of fact, some of these may even be better at night!
Here are a few of our favorite self-guided options:
- Ancient Rome (with audio option)
- Rome City Centre (with audio option)
- Old Jewish Ghetto Audio Tour
- Trastevere Audio Tour
Discover the city at your own pace and avoid most of the crowds by heading out in the evening instead of during the day.
2. Free & Paid Guided Walking Tours
If you’d rather have the help of a professional guide, there are a variety of guided walking tours you can take which are offered at night.
Some of these outings are even pay-what-you-wish, allowing you to decide how much they are worth.
Consider one of the following options if you’re looking for a guided walking tour after dark:
- Central Rome Free Tour | 16:50 (4:50 pm)
- Rome at Dusk Free Tours | 20:20 (8:30pm)
- Dark Heart of Rome Tour | 21:15 (9:15 pm)
- Small-Group Night Tour of Rome | 20:30 (8:30 pm)
For even more options, make sure to check this list of guided walking tours in Rome at night .
3. Guided Bus Tours
Most of the major bus tour companies in Rome offer a separate service after dark.
These aren’t hop-on hop-off bus tours, so you won’t have an opportunity to jump off and explore at your own pace.
That said, you will have the chance to see the most notable landmarks in the city at night, and you’ll usually be given at least a few opportunities to stop and take photos.
For more details, please read our post detailing night bus tours in Rome .
4. Colosseum Night Tours
Believe it or not, you can actually visit the Colosseum after dark.
In addition to experiencing this famous landmark in the evening, most night tours also include access to the underground area that few get the opportunity to see.
There are a few different companies offering this service.
You can learn more about the guided tours they offer on our post detailing Colosseum night tours .
Alternatively, you’ll also find several additional options on this list of night tours at the Colosseum .
5. Vatican Night Tours
There are a few companies offering a tour of the Vatican after hours.
These outings will allow you to visit the Vatican Museums after closing at 19:30 (7:30 pm) and see some of the most important attractions without crowds.
While we recommend the highly-rated service offered by Take Walks , tickets are limited, so you might need to consider another alternative.
Check this list of Vatican Museums night tours for additional options.
6. Ghost Tours of Rome
If you’re interested in learning about the more disturbing aspects of Roman history, there are at least a handful of ghost tours you can take.
Most of these services are after dark, but all depends on the time of year.
Here are a few options you might want to consider:
- Haunted Ghost Walking Tour | 20:00 (8 pm)
- Haunted Rome Walking Tour | 18:00 (6 pm)
- Ghosts of Rome | 20:00 (8 pm)
7. Night Bike Tours
While most bike tours take place during the day, there are a few services that offer outings after dark.
These tours typically begin at 7 pm and last for at least 2-3 hours.
Some night bike tours also include a free meal, allowing you to enjoy a light dinner while cycling around the city and discovering all the major sites after the sun goes down.
For more details, please read our post covering night bike tours in Rome .
8. Segway Night Tours
If you’d rather not pedal your way around the city at night, you might find Segways a bit more entertaining.
Most segway tour companies offer at least one tour after dark.
A majority of segway night tours start at either 19:00 (7 pm) or 19:30 (7:30 pm), and each company offers a short demonstration to help familiarize you with the vehicle.
For more information about this option, check our post covering Rome segway tours .
9. Dinner Cruises
Enjoy some sightseeing in Rome while drifting along the river and eating a nice meal.
While this is a very comfortable service, it’s worth noting that it’s not a traditional tour, so you probably won’t learn much about the city.
In addition to a meal, you can also usually expect some romantic music, making this the perfect opportunity for a date night.
Check this list of dinner cruises in Rome to find one that fits your schedule.
10. Catacomb Tours
While there are some catacomb tours that take place during the day, it’s much creepier and eerie to experience this part of Rome after dark.
Most catacomb tours visit the famed Capuchin Crypt, with a special visit to its disturbing Bone Chapel.
If you’re interested in a ghost tour, this might be a fun alternative that covers some of the more disturbing sites in the city.
Take a look at this list of Rome catacombs night tours to find one you’ll enjoy.

YOUR FULL TOUR
Description.
Whether you are visiting Roma for the first time or coming back for your annual visit, this ‘Best of Rome’ small group tour is perfect for everyone.
It includes the absolute ‘musts’ of what to see in Rome and serves as a great starting point for any holiday. If you’re a first-timer it will help you orientate yourself with the city and get a well-rounded introduction with ample great photo opportunities!
For the old-timers this guided tour of the Historic Centre of Rome is filled with quirky details and fun facts known only to locals and it may just open your eyes to another side of Rome! So whichever category you fit into, don’t miss this unique, fun tour of Rome!
So if you are wondering what to see in Rome’s Historic Centre, this tour covers it all and leaves you in the best part of the city to enjoy the famous relaxing Roman summer nights!
Your evening tour of the best of Rome will start off with a visit to the famous Spanish Steps and Bernini’s Barcaccia Fountain. Continue your walk to the stunning Trevi Fountain, which is the largest baroque fountain in Rome.
Legend has it that if you toss a coin over your left shoulder into the Fountain you’ll return to Rome one day.
Next, you’ll walk to the Piazza della Rotonda and visit the historic Pantheon. Your local tour guide will fill you in on all the details of when it was built, its history and other interesting facts.
You will be able to enjoy some authentic Roman gelato or a delicious coffee as you admire the beautiful architecture and watch the world go by.
No best of Rome tour would be complete without a visit to the Largo di Torre Argentina – aka Area Sacra, aka the Saced Area, aka the Cat Sanctuary!
A fascinating archaeological site in a vibrant part of the city – complete with 1st-Century ruins, reckless Roman drivers and an abundance of stray cats!
The next part of your tour of Rome includes a walk up the steps to admire the views from Campidoglio, the piazza designed by Michelangelo. The structure itself is as remarkable as the views – Ancient Rome to the rear and the historic centre at its face.
This famous piazza has several secrets to reveal, book your tour today to find them all out!
Your Rome tour guide will also take you through the Jewish Ghetto, where you will see the Portico d’Ottavia, the Synagogue and the remains of the Teatro Marcello – an ancient theatre similar in design to the Colosseum, which you will see has been marvellously integrated into the modern city.
We continue our evening walk to Campo de’ Fiori, a site that at one time was noted for exciting races and public executions. In the centre of the square you’ll see the statue of philosopher and cosmological theorist Giordano Bruno.
Today Campo de’ Fiori is a busy marketplace in the morning and a centre of nightlife after the sun goes down. It’s the perfect place to conclude your evening in the Eternal City after your guided tour.
We make one final stop, however, before leaving you to continue your evening. At Piazza Navona, your guide will take you to admire Bernini’s magnificent Four Rivers Fountain in the centre of this iconic piazza, which you will note takes an unusual shape – for good reason!
This piazza was built atop an ancient Roman circus – a track used in Rome for Greek-style track and field sports. This makes it the iconic symbol of Rome today, perfectly highlighting how the modern city embraces and incorporates its ancient, medieval, Renaissance and Baroque histories, into a beautiful blend that cannot be rivalled.
The square also features other important sculptural and architectural creations, including the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone by Borromini, Palazzo Pamphili, the Neptune Fountain at the northern end and the Moor Fountain at the southern end.

Tour description, tour the colosseum at night after the gates have officially closed for the day..
A Colosseum night tour is one of the most exclusive and enjoyable ways to visit Rome's most famous ruin. The crowds are smaller, the views are better, and the experience is much more intimate. You'll experience the arena in all its glory as you explore the nearly empty arena with your expert guide telling hair-raising tales of its bloody past. Your experience won't just be more intimate, it will be much more comfortable now that the sun has gone down.
You'll start your Colosseum night tour in the historic Jewish Quarter. Take a look at the Teatro di Marcello—an ancient amphitheater that looks like a miniature Colosseum—before making your way towards the main event. Along the way, you'll pass by Piazza Venezia, seeing the monument that represents new Rome and new Italy—and by far one of the most beautiful buildings in Rome to be seen at night. Once you arrive at a scenic vantage point overlooking the Roman Forum, your guide will tell you tales from the empire, whose reach you won't believe.
Trace the story of gladiators underneath the Colosseum and out on the arena floor.
Just as the last of the daytime crowds empty out, you'll step into the magnificent Colosseum itself. You'll head up into the stands first for an introductory stroll around Rome's most iconic monument, hearing stories of its origin and initial purpose. Without the hustle and bustle of the daytime crowds, you'll experience the Colosseum at its most serene, and get a sense of what the atmosphere was like nearly 2,000 years ago—an experience few visitors can claim to have had.
The next stop on the Colosseum night tour is a true VIP experience. You'll head down into the underground area below the Colosseum, where animals and gladiators awaited their turn to fight. The underground may only be visited on pre-booked tours with a limited number of participants, so this is a rare opportunity! Combined with the later entrance time, this makes our Colosseum night tour the most exclusive Colosseum visit available—as well as the most enjoyable.
Finally, you’ll experience your own "Gladiator" moment on the arena floor. Make your way there alongside an official Colosseum guard who will unlock a special gate, swinging it open to reveal that iconic walkway onto the floor. Walk in the footsteps of gladiators as you step out on to the arena floor and scream “Are you not entertained?” into the empty amphitheater (if you so please). This is the most incredible vantage point in the Colosseum, so take your time to soak it up.
Journey through Ancient Rome in a small group of 24 people or fewer.
Seeing the Colosseum in general may be an opportunity that only comes once in a lifetime—and having it all to yourself at night definitely is! Perfect for families, for those who don't like the heat of day, and for visitors who want a different experience, our VIP Colosseum Night Tour is one of our most atmospheric experiences. High demand and limited availability often mean that this tour sells out months in advance, so book now to secure your place! Trust us when we say that this is an experience you'll cherish for decades to come.
Please note: Due to high demand and restricted access, the entrance time at the Colosseum may be granted between 7:15pm and 10:30pm the day of your tour. We will confirm the start time of your tour about 30 days prior to the tour date.

Last year I was in Rome and did a Coliseum tour in the day . . . I didn’t want to go again after that experience but my family wanted to. I am so glad I did! The night tour was a completely different experience and 100% worth it! Going at night without the intense crowds and not in the heat of the day made it so much easier to immerse yourself into the experience and enjoy the information received. You could actually start to think of what it was like so long ago. Book this tour well in advance, you won’t be sorry!
