Royal Caribbean shuts down trips to Haiti. Here’s where its cruise ships are going instead.

R oyal Caribbean announced suspensions of planned stops to Labadee, the cruise line’s private resort on Haiti’s northern shore, in the wake of continued violence and lawlessness in the island nation.

The announcement on Thursday came a day after Royal Caribbean said it would continue stopping at its private resort while “monitoring” for safety threats.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority. Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee,” the cruise line announced.

So far, the suspension is in effect until March 22, the cruise line said. Plans beyond that date will be announced as decisions are made.

“We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly,” the statement said.

The U.S. State Department has maintained a “Do Not Travel” advisory for Haiti since July 27, 2023, due to kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor health care infrastructure. “Kidnapping is widespread and victims regularly include U.S. citizens,” the alert states.

The situation took a turn for the worse in early March as gangs attacked government buildings and the National Penitentiary, releasing an estimated 4,000 inmates. This week, Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation.

Labadee is an enclosed resort, built on a peninsula accessible only to Royal Caribbean guests and employees, that the cruise line has leased since the 1980s. The 260-acre property is located about 130 miles north of Port-au-Prince, where most of the violence is taking place. Travel by car from the capital to the resort takes six to eight hours.

The resort features a roller coaster, fishing and jet-ski areas, cabanas and beach access. Private security protects cruise ship customers when Royal Caribbean’s ships stop there.

Itineraries of six ships that sail from Florida ports will be affected by the suspension, which is scheduled to last through March 22.

Symphony of the Seas , departing Port Everglades on March 18. Labadee stop replaced by a sea day. Falmouth, Jamaica call time adjusted to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Explorer of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 17. Labadee stop replaced by Perfect Day at Coco Cay with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oasis of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 17. Labadee stop replaced by Falmouth, Jamaica, with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grandeur of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 18. Labadee stop replaced by Perfect Day at CocoCay with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Adventure of the Seas , departing Port Canaveral on March 15. Labadee stop replaced by Grand Turk with a call time of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mariner of the Seas , departing Port Canaveral on March 16. Labadee stop replaced by Nassau, Bahamas with a call time of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This is not the first time Royal Caribbean has suspended stops to Labadee because of unrest in Haiti.

In 2016, the cruise line canceled three stops  after encountering local residents in small boats staging a protest.

Port Labadee Haiti cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Labadee Haiti, Royal Caribbean private island. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Labadee is an exclusive (privately-owned) Caribbean island port and resort destination located on Haiti's northern coast. This "private island" (area sized 260 acres/105 hectares) is leased until 2050 to the company RCCL-Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (now RCG-Royal Caribbean Group). Since 1986, RCCL has contributed the biggest proportion of tourist revenue to Haiti, employing 300 locals, allowing another 200 to sell wares on the premises for a fee, and also paying the government of Haiti USD 12 per ship tourist.

As an exclusive destination, at Labadee can dock and disembark passengers/crew only liners from the fleets of RCI-Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises . The first liner that visited Labadee since the COVID crisis started (March 2020) was Harmony OTS - on January 27, 2022.

The resort is entirely tourism-oriented and guarded by a private security force. Cruisers are not allowed to leave the property - the site is fenced off from the surrounding area and food available to travelers is brought from the ships. Controlled Haitian merchants are given the sole rights to sell merchandise and establish businesses in the resort. Though sometimes described in advertisements as an island, Labadee is actually a peninsula contiguous with Hispaniola Island. The cruise ships moor to the pier at Labadee which was completed in late 2009 and is capable of servicing Oasis-class ships.

Labadee attractions include beaches, watersports, a water-oriented playground, an alpine coaster, a zip line, and a Haitian flea market.

Royal Caribbean ships arrive in Labadee at ~8 am. Disembarkation is after breakfast on the ship. Lunch is Labadee BBQ (including veggie burgers) starting at 11 am. Dining options also include salads, fast food (burgers, hot dogs), chicken, fresh-made food.

Purchases can be made via SeaPass (boarding cards), except craft markets selling locally-made merchandise for cash. Shopping on Labadee is available at Artisan Market (fixed prices store for handmade goods) and Artisan Village (outdoor market with negotiable prices). Both are cash-only shopping options.

  • Labadee's most popular attraction is the zip-line Dragon's Breath Flight Line. It starts from the mountain-top launch platform and allows speeds up to 50 mph (80 kph). Nature trails are also among the most common activities, along with parasailing, jet skiing, deep-sea fishing, alpine coaster riding, DreamWorks Safari. All these shore excursions can be booked prior the voyage (via RCI's Cruise Planner).
  • Renting private cabanas or beach bungalows is also very popular among tourists. These beachside accommodations provide privacy and can be booked either online (before the voyage, via RCI's Cruise Planner) or while on the ship. Beach beds and loungers are the other local rental options.
  • Columbus Cove Beach is the least crowded. Due to the large walking distance from the docking pier, tourists often use the quick and complimentary ferry ride to Columbus Cove.
  • Barefoot Beach is an exclusive beach (reserved for Grand Suite and above cruise ship passengers) served by its own lunch buffet restaurant.
  • At Adrenaline Beach there is a swim-up bar.
  • Adventure Ocean Oasis (at Adrenaline Beach) is a kids splash area equipped with water toys, fountains and geysers. The facility is part of RCI's onboard kids program "Adventure Ocean" for supervised children's activities. Other kids' playgrounds are the Arawak Aqua Park (at Columbus Cove, with water slides, floating trampolines and pyramids) and Dragon's Splash Waterslide (Columbus Cove, featuring a 300 ft / 90 m long water slide ending into a splash zone.

Just like shipboard, Royal Caribbean beverage packages  are all valid on Labadee too.

For touring Labadee, RCI provides complimentary shuttles all along the resort island. Tram stops are clearly marked.

In 2017 (August through October), Royal Caribbean made enhancements to Labadee's Adrenaline Beach. Works started on August 14 and included adding new reef balls to restore ailing coral reefs and create new scuba diving and snorkeling paths for cruise ship tourists. There were no works during all scheduled ship visits to the island. During the Adrenaline Beach redevelopment were also added cabanas.

Curiously, on Labadee there is a crew-only beach (located south of Columbus Cove Beach). Named "Belly Beach", it can be accessed only by boat (leaving from the jet-ski landing) and is exclusive to cruise ship crew members. Belly Beach is private (not owned by Royal Caribbean) so food and beverages there cost extra and are provided from an a la carte-priced menu at an open-air restaurant.

Barefoot Beach cabanas

Barefoot Beach on Labadee is an RCCL private beach property with exclusive access for Suite passengers and Pinnacle members of the company's "Crown & Anchor Society" loyalty program.

The beach offers a variety of private cabanas available for rent (at additional cost, on a first-come-first-served basis). These cabanas can be reserved via the ship's Concierge or the onboard Shore Excursions desk.

Follows the list of cabanas as types and rental prices (per cabana) at the Barefoot Beach: Standard (USD 295), Beachfront and Hilltop (USD 395), Over Water (USD 495). Reservations are full-day.

Each cabana has max capacity 6 people, 2 lounge chairs, a large indoor seating area. The list of price-inclusive amenities includes assigned attendant, complimentary amenities (towels, bottled water in cooler, snorkeling gear, 2 floating mats, hammocks, golf cart), private BBQ buffet exclusive access.

  • Standard cabanas are also wheelchair accessible (with 2 steps only).
  • Hilltop cabanas are the most private, featuring great panoramic views from above.
  • Over Water cabanas have direct access to the sea and the beach.
  • Beachfront cabanas are on the waterfront.

Nellie's Beach cabanas

Nellie's Beach is another RCCL private beach property with free access for all cabin types of passengers. The beach offers a variety of private cabanas available for rent (at additional cost, on a first-come-first-served basis).

These cabanas can be reserved via Cruise Planner (at RCI's website) and are 2 types - "Beach" and "Over-Water". Rent prices are USD 395 (Beach Cabana) and USD 495 (Over Water Cabana). Over-Water cabanas are built on rock groupings and have walkways down to the sea.

All rental details and price-included amenities are the same as for the suite-only Barefoot Beach.

At Columbus Beach, there are new bungalows (similar to the cabanas). Bungalow's rental price is USD 225 per day.

Labadee Haiti cruise terminal

Labadee is most popular with its beaches and active fun. Among the most popular attractions and activities are:

  • Dragon's Breath Zip-Line is the longest built over water - length 2600 ft (792 m), 500 ft (152 m) above the beach, zip-lining speed is 40-50 mph (65-80 kph).
  • Arawak Aqua Park - among its best features are floating trampolines, inflatable pyramids, water slides, kids splash areas.
  • Alpine Coaster (roller coaster) is located approx 700 ft (213 m) up on Santa Maria mountain. A single car vehicle races down at speeds of 30 mph (50 kph) with numerous turns, dips and waves.
  • Parasailing - height is approx 400 ft (122 m) in the air.
  • 3-hour Deep sea fishing tour is offered off the Labadee's coast on a private boat (26 ft / 8 m long), where you can catch large fish (like tuna, marlin, wahoo).

Next is the new map isssued after the 2017 refurbishment.

Labadee vs. CocoCay: Which Royal Caribbean beach is right for you?

Erica Silverstein

It must be nice to have two private islands at your disposal for beachy vacation fun. Set sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise, and you, too, can enjoy the exclusive island life on one or both of the line's private beaches, Labadee and Perfect Day at CocoCay.

I visited both ports on a Caribbean cruise aboard Wonder of the Seas and was surprised at how different the two destinations are. If you're choosy about your beach day experience, you'll want to do your homework and choose an itinerary featuring Labadee versus CocoCay based on the location and type of attractions, activities and setting you prefer.

Or, do like I did, and find an itinerary that includes both of Royal Caribbean's private islands .

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Where are Labadee and CocoCay located?

royal caribbean cruise to haiti

You might find Labadee and CocoCay on the same itinerary, but geographically, they are very different.

CocoCay is a tiny island in the Bahamas , which is technically in the Atlantic Ocean not the Caribbean Sea. Royal Caribbean leases the entire island from the Bahamian government. The island, previously known as Little Stirrup Cay, is found in the Berry Islands archipelago within sight of Norwegian Cruise Line 's private island, Great Stirrup Cay. CocoCay is southeast of Freeport and northwest of Nassau.

CocoCay is just a flat, sandy strip, dotted with trees.

Related: 9 things I learned after cruising to Royal Caribbean's new private island getaway

royal caribbean cruise to haiti

Labadee is located along the north coast of Haiti, near Cap-Haitien, in the Caribbean. While Royal Caribbean leases and controls the small peninsula where the beach is located, Labadee is not an island and is connected by road to the rest of Haiti. However, the area is fenced off and secured; passengers cannot travel into Haiti proper, and only select Haitians can come to Labadee to perform or sell crafts to cruise visitors.

Unfortunately, due to political instability in Haiti and other issues, calls on Labadee are less frequent and get canceled more often than calls on CocoCay.

Haiti looks nothing like the Bahamas. Cruise visitors might be surprised to wake up to lush, green, rolling hills and a line of sandy coves as far as the eye can see. The rolling terrain is what allows for the Dragon's Tail Coaster ride at the far end of the beach.

What do both private beaches have in common? Piers. Ships can dock at either port and passengers can walk right off, with no need to take a small boat (called a tender) between ship and shore.

Labadee vs. CocoCay beaches

royal caribbean cruise to haiti

As different as these islands look, they're both centered around a day at the beach. Labadee and CocoCay each offer guests numerous beach options with distinct vibes. All offer free lounge chairs for Royal Caribbean guests and tram service to the various beaches.

Labadee offers five different beaches on either side of the peninsula. The three southern beaches, on the pier side, are located within a sheltered cove, with calm waters (though the sand can be a bit rocky underwater). These include the exclusive Barefoot Beach Club (reserved for suite and Pinnacle guests); the quiet, cabana-lined Nellie's Beach; and Columbus Cove, the site of the Aqua Park and water sports rentals.

The far, or northern, side of the peninsula fronts the open sea. If you want crashing waves and real surf, stop at Dragon's Beach, the first beach you find when walking from the ship. It's next to Adrenaline Beach, where a seawall reins in some of the rougher water and a floating bar lures visitors to take a break from beach volleyball and mountain coaster rides.

Labadee's beaches are beautiful but feel more real than the overly manicured beaches you find on some private islands. You'll also find local Haitians waiting to escort you to a lounge chair in exchange for a tip. It's a fairly long walk from the ship to the far end of Columbus Cove; hop one of the open-sided trams or take a shuttle boat from the ship straight to Columbus Cove.

CocoCay's beaches are laid out in a circle, and most are a five to 10-minute walk from the Arrivals Plaza (where the pier meets the island). The postcard-perfect stretches of white sand feel manicured and resort-like.

The main oceanfront beaches are Chill Island, Breezy Bay Island and — the farthest — South Beach, near the sports courts and swim-up bar. The closest beach, Harbor Beach, is situated on an inlet that almost seems like a pond. It's a great choice for families as the waters are calm, and it's located next to the little kid splash area and the Skipper's Grill barbecue.

If you want to enjoy the VIP lifestyle on your day off, you can purchase a day pass to the exclusive Coco Beach Club. You'll get access to a private beach, upscale restaurant and infinity pool. Alternatively, you can book an overwater cabana or beachside bungalow for a private retreat, in addition to all the beach club amenities.

Things to do in Labadee vs. CocoCay

royal caribbean cruise to haiti

The attractions and activities are really what differentiate Labadee and Perfect Day at CocoCay.

CocoCay is an amusement park with a side of beach. Its hot pink Daredevil's Tower, "the tallest waterslide in North America" according to the line, is a standout feature that can be seen for miles. The tower marks the sprawling, pay-to-play Thrill Waterpark with its eight waterslides and two pools.

Other extra-fee, adrenaline-rush attractions include a rainbow-striped hot air balloon ride and zip line. Little kids can enjoy the Captain Jill's Galleon play area and Splashaway Bay mini-water park for free.

Related: How to visit Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay on zero dollars

Not a fan of ocean waves and sandy bottoms? The Oasis Lagoon is a giant pool in the center of the island. It offers something for everything with a swim-up bar for adults and a sloped-entry section with fountains for the littlest cruisers.

Labadee's extra-fee attractions blend into the landscape more. Its zip line is arguably more epic, starting in the forested hills and sailing across both Adrenaline and Dragon's beaches. The Dragon's Tail Coaster ride twists and turns through the hills; you can barely see the course from the beach. The Aqua Park is a floating obstacle course that's much harder than it looks. A free, very basic splash area in the center of the peninsula is great for little kids to play in.

Labadee also has some walking paths throughout the peninsula that are hidden gems.

Both CocoCay and Labadee offer sports courts, kayaks and floating mat rentals. Both islands provide shopping opportunities; CocoCay has a logo store and a Bahamian straw market, while Labadee offers an extensive artisans' village and market.

Labadee offers the more authentic shopping experience, where you can haggle with the Haitian shop owners to purchase locally made crafts. Note that you will get aggressive sales pitches, even when simply walking through the market from Town Square to Columbus Cove. Just say "no thanks" and keep going if you're not interested in taking a look in the shops.

Shore excursions from the two islands

royal caribbean cruise to haiti

You can book plenty of "shore excursions" on both Labadee and CocoCay, but the tour offerings fall into two categories.

The first is simply booking the aforementioned attractions or renting snorkel equipment and floating mats on the islands. On both islands, you can rent cabanas, bungalows and day beds to have a bit of privacy and shade, as well as VIP amenities. Though pricey, cabanas often sell out, so book online as early as you can before your sailing for the most options and the best prices.

The second are actual tours and activities you'd find in any port. In this department, Labadee has many more options, with a variety of tours. You can go by boat to even more private islands, go sport fishing or parasailing, or learn about Haitian culture in nearby areas. From this beach destination, you can book a snorkel, kayak or jet ski tour, too.

Related: What new cruisers should know about shore excursions

Labadee's more unusual offerings include Royal Caribbean's version of "paint night," where you learn about (and taste) a tropical cocktail then paint a handcrafted local souvenir, and a walking tour of the island to learn about local history and geography.

On CocoCay, you can book a scuba dive trip or kayak tour, or boat off to a nearby island to swim with pigs or stingrays. The options are limited, likely because Royal Caribbean would rather you spend money on the island's cruise line-operated attractions, such as the water park.

Food and drink on Royal Caribbean's beaches

royal caribbean cruise to haiti

Lunch is complimentary on both of Royal Caribbean's private island beaches, and wherever you choose to play, food is never far away.

Labadee has three main barbecue venues: Dragon's Café close to the pier, Café Labadee by Adrenaline Beach and Town Square, and Columbus Cove Café. All three serve up the typical burgers, hot dogs and barbecue chicken lunches you expect from a cruise line private island. Guests with access to Barefoot Beach Club can eat a more refined barbecue lunch there.

CocoCay has two main barbecue venues, Chill Grill by Chill Island and Skipper's Grill by Harbor Beach. These serve burgers and dogs, plus tacos, sandwiches and salads, soft-serve ice cream and even self-serve beer (the latter for a fee). It also has three Snack Shack outposts that serve up comfort food such as mozzarella sticks, cheeseburgers, crispy chicken sandwiches, and even funnel cake. All these venues are included in your cruise fare.

Coco Beach Club has its own exclusive restaurant, and the Captain Jack's bar serves up extra-fee bar food, such as chicken wings.

In general, you'll find a slightly better food experience on CocoCay than on Labadee.

Both islands have plenty of bars, including floating bars, and each island has a signature drink (The Coco Loco and the Labadoozie). If you purchased a beverage package on the ship, it will also cover drinks on both islands – which is not always the case on other cruise lines' private islands.

Bottom line

royal caribbean cruise to haiti

You can easily enjoy a relaxing day at the beach with free lunch and easily accessible drinks, plus activity and shopping options, on either of Royal Caribbean's private island beaches.

You'll prefer CocoCay if you're willing to shell out for its amazing water park, want more lunch variety and desire a pristine, resort-like beach experience.

Labadee will be your favorite if you like a more natural setting, wish to learn more about local culture from the people who live nearby and want a simple beach day without feeling the need to spend money on thrill rides.
