WATCH: Biden and King Charles meet for climate discussion during London visit

WINDSOR, England (AP) — President Joe Biden and King Charles III, aging leaders who’ve waited decades to reach the pinnacle of their careers, used their first meeting in their respective roles Monday to highlight the generational issue of climate change as they prod private companies to do more to bolster clean energy in developing countries.

The meticulously choreographed gathering at Windsor Castle injected substance into the type of encounter between president and monarch that historically has been more about the pomp and circumstance. After the arrival formalities, Biden and Charles participated in a climate-focused roundtable with officials from the financial and philanthropic sectors. John Kerry, the U.S. envoy on climate, attended.

The 74-year-old Charles, who was crowned in May , has already made the environment a significant part of his policy legacy and has long fought to protect wildlife and battle climate change. Biden, for his part, identified climate change as one of the four crises he was determined to confront as president. He signed a sweeping legislative package last year that includes nearly $375 billion in climate-related incentives.

Biden, 80, last had formal talks with Charles, then prince, at the COP26 U.N. climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, in November 2021. The U.S. president also attended the state funeral of Charles’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September as well as a reception for heads of state at Buckingham Palace the night before the service. Biden did not attend Charles’s coronation, sending first lady Jill Biden instead.

Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, said the president has “huge respect” for the king’s commitment on the climate issue in particular. He said Charles has been a “clarion voice” on climate and “someone who’s mobilized action and effort.”

“So the president comes at this with enormous goodwill,” Sullivan told reporters Sunday as Biden flew to London.

Biden and Charles made sure to show off their still-developing friendship and warmth during the ceremonial arrival at Windsor Castle, outside London. After they shook hands, Biden put his hand on Charles’s arm, then on the king’s back as they approached a viewing platform to inspect an honor guard. They appeared relaxed and cordial — a contrast to more formal encounters between past U.S. presidents and British royalty.

The views of the late Queen Elizabeth II on politics and political issues were a closely guarded secret, and her meetings with world leaders were almost entirely ceremonial. Charles spent his decades as heir to the throne expressing opinions on issues from architecture to the environment, and has continued to take a keen interest in climate change now that he is king. However, neither he nor Biden spoke publicly at Windsor Castle.

Biden’s royal visit was paired with his sixth meeting with the British prime minister since Rishi Sunak took office, The two discussed a range of global issues, including the war in Ukraine. Both nations are among the most stalwart defenders of Kyiv, and the United Kingdom has pushed the White House to take more aggressive steps in providing military aid to Ukraine.

Their talks were meant to highlight the so-called enduring “special relationship” between the U.S. and the U.K. When Biden declined to attend Charles’s coronation, he promised the king in a phone call that he would visit soon.

Before arriving at Windsor Castle, Biden sat down with Sunak at the prime minister’s residence at 10 Downing St. in London to discuss Ukraine and other matters, including the U.S. president’s decision this week to provide Ukraine with cluster munitions , a weapon that more than two-thirds of the members of the NATO military alliance have barred for their potential threat to civilian life.

Biden has said that providing the bombs — which open mid-air and release smaller “bomblets” across a broad swath of land — was a “difficult decision” but he noted that the Ukrainians are running out of ammunition and that the weapons were necessary for them to continue to fight Russian forces.

“It took me a while to be convinced to do it,” Biden said in a CNN interview broadcast as he flew to London. “But the main thing is, they either have the weapons to stop the Russians … from stopping the Ukrainian offensive through these areas, or they don’t. And I think they needed them.”

Sunak, for his part, has distanced himself from the U.S. decision. The prime minister’s spokesman said the leaders spoke Monday about Britain’s opposition to the use of cluster munitions.

“The first thing to say is this was a difficult choice for the U.S. that has been forced on them by Russia’s war of aggression,” said Sunak’s spokesman, Max Blain. “As the prime minister said over the weekend, the U.K. is a state party to the convention on cluster munitions. They discussed the commitments the U.K. has under that convention both not to produce or use cluster munitions and to discourage their use.”

The U.S. is not a party to that agreement. Sunak stressed over the weekend that Britain will “continue to do our part to support Ukraine against Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion, but we’ve done that by providing heavy battle tanks and most recently long-range weapons, and hopefully all countries can continue to support Ukraine.”

WATCH: Biden announces $600M in climate investments as 2024 campaign revs up

Sullivan also downplayed the disagreement over cluster munitions, saying, “I think you will find Prime Minister Sunak and President Biden on the same page strategically on Ukraine, in lockstep on the bigger picture of what we’re trying to accomplish and as united as ever — both in this conflict and writ large.”

And as the leaders met over tea in the 10 Downing St. garden on Monday, they continued to project that face of unity.

“We’ve only been meeting once a month,” Biden joked as he declared the relationship between the U.S. and U.K. was “rock solid.” Sunak added that their countries are “two of the firmest allies in that alliance.”

The prime minister’s office said the meeting offered a chance to monitor progress on measures and initiatives under the Atlantic Declaration, which the two leaders signed when Sunak visited the White House last month . The declaration includes negotiations over an agreement on critical minerals to support shared U.S. and U.K. leadership in green technology, the statement said.

Prince William and Kate's Royal Visit to Boston: Here's Everything We Know

The prince and princess of wales will arrive in the city on wednesday and depart on friday, by marc fortier • published november 29, 2022 • updated on november 29, 2022 at 11:49 pm.

Prince William and the Princess of Wales will be looking to focus attention on their Earthshot Prize for environmental innovators when they make their first visit to the United States in eight years this week , a trip clouded by tensions with William’s brother, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan, who have criticized Britain’s royal family in the American media.

William and his wife, Kate Middleton, will travel to Boston on Wednesday for three days of public engagements before announcing the prize winners on Friday in a ceremony headlined by pop star Billie Eilish.

STAY IN THE KNOW

Boston, birthplace of John F. Kennedy, was chosen to host the second annual prize ceremony because the late president’s 1962 “moonshot” speech inspired the prince and his partners to set a similar goal for finding solutions to climate change and other environmental problems by 2030. The first Earthshot Prizes were awarded last year in London just before the U.K. hosted the COP26 climate conference.

Here's everything you need to know about this week's royal visit:

What Is the Earthshot Prize?

The Earthshot prize was founded by Prince William and The Royal Foundation in 2020. It was inspired by and with a name echoing President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge to America to land a man on the moon by that decade’s end, and aims to “discover and scale the best solutions to help repair our planet within the next decade,” according to a release.

Earthshot offers 1 million pounds ($1.2 million) in prize money to the winners of five separate categories: nature protection, clean air, ocean revival, waste elimination and climate change. The winners and all 15 finalists also receive help in expanding their projects to meet global demand.

Among the finalists is a startup from Kenya that aims to provide cleaner-burning stoves to make cooking safer and reduce indoor air pollution. It was the brainchild of Charlot Magayi, who grew up in one of Nairobi’s largest slums and sold charcoal for fuel.

When her daughter was severely burned by a charcoal-fired stove in 2012, she developed a stove that uses a safer fuel made from a combination of charcoal, wood and sugarcane. The stoves cut costs for users, reduce toxic emissions and lower the risk of burns, Magayi says.

Other finalists include Fleather, a project in India that creates an alternative to leather out of floral waste; Hutan, an effort to protect orangutans in Malaysia; and SeaForester, which seeks to restore kelp forests that capture carbon and promote biodiversity.

The winners will be announced Friday at Boston’s MGM Music Hall as part of a glitzy show headlined by numerous celebrities. The ceremony will be broadcast Sunday on the BBC in the U.K., PBS in the U.S. and Multichoice across Africa.

Hollywood Descends on Boston

Numerous A-list celebrities are headed to Boston this week to join the Prince and Princess of Wales at the Earthshot Prize Awards.

Billie Eilish is among the singers who will take the stage at the MGM Music Hall in Fenway on Friday for the awards show, at which five people will receive $1 million for their environmental projects. Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek will be presenting one of the awards, along with Princess Catherine and other stars.

The awards show will be co-hosted by actor Daniel Dae Kim and British TV presenter Clara Amfo, which won't air in the U.S. until Monday.

Performing along with Eilish and her brother, Finneas, will be Annie Lennox, Chloe x Halle and Ellie Goulding, according to a news release. Other celebrities presenting awards include actors Catherine O’Hara and Shailene Woodley.

Sir David Attenborough, the naturalist and documentary filmmaker behind shows like "Planet Earth," will appear in the ceremony, and Prince William will give a speech closing out the show.

Royal Drama?

As much as the royals try to focus on the prize, William is likely to face questions about Harry and Meghan, who have criticized the royal family for racism and insensitive treatment in interviews with Oprah Winfrey and other U.S. media. The Netflix series “The Crown” has also resurrected some of the more troubled times of the House of Windsor just as the royal family tries to show that it remains relevant in modern, multicultural Britain following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“You could say that the royal family, particularly as far as America is concerned, have had a bit of a bumpy ride of late,” said Joe Little, the managing editor of Majesty Magazine. “They’ve come in for huge amounts of criticism on the back of ‘The Crown’ and also the Oprah Winfrey interview, which has not particularly reflected well on the House of Windsor, so I think it’s a good opportunity whilst they’re in the U.S. … to sort of redress the balance if at all possible.’’

What Do the Royals Have Planned While in Boston?

Whatever those efforts are, they will take place in and around Boston, where William and Kate will remain for their entire visit.

The royal couple will keep the focus on environmental issues, meeting with local organizations responding to rising sea levels in Boston and visiting Greentown Labs in Somerville, an incubator hub where local entrepreneurs are working on projects to combat climate change.

But they will also address broader issues, using their star power to highlight the work of Chelsea's Roca Inc., which tries to improve the lives of young people by addressing issues such as racism, poverty and incarceration. They will also visit Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child, a leader on research into the long-term impact of early childhood experiences. The Harvard Center has a long relationship with The Royal Foundation and The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.

William and Kate will also meet with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu at an event that is open to the public at City Hall Plaza and visit the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library and Museum with the late president’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy.

“The prince and princess are looking forward to spending time in Boston, and to learning more about the issues that are affecting local people, as well as to celebrating the incredible climate solutions that will be spotlighted through the Earthshot Prize,” their Kensington Palace office said in a statement.

LIVE: King Charles and Camilla visit Greater Manchester - latest updates

The monarch is celebrating bolton town hall's 150th anniversary as he visits greater manchester.

King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort, held a series of royal engagements in Greater Manchester today. The royal couple visited Stretford, Wythenshawe, and Bolton to celebrate 150 years of the borough's town hall.

Their Majesties were greeted at the town hall by a civic line up including Mayor Coun Akhtar Zaman, leading councillors and local MPs. The King's visit to the borough marked the first time a reigning monarch has visited Bolton since 1988.

During their visit to the town, the King and Queen Consort were treated to a performance from the Polonez folk dance group. The pair then entered the town hall via the Hall of Memories, pausing to look at LS Lowry’s famous painting Going to the Match, which was inspired by Bolton Wanderers’ old Burnden Park ground.

Afterwards, they joined a reception in the main hall to meet representatives from several community groups including Bolton Asian Elders, Bolton Holiday Activities and Food Programme and Fortalice.

This was Charles' first visit to the region as King, but he held several notable engagements in Greater Manchester while he was still the Prince of Wales. On one occasion in 1997 he met up with the Spice Girls, while in December 2000 he attended the legendary set of Coronation Street.

Today's royal visit to Greater Manchester was be the King's second public engagement since the release of the Duke of Sussex’s controversial memoir Spare, containing a series of revelations about royal life, including the allegation that he and William told their father they would welcome Camilla into the family on the condition he did not marry her. Harry claims the brothers “begged” him not to do so but his father did not respond to their pleas. Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on any of the allegations made in the book.

The Palace says today's meeting with the King is because Southgate is a 'Prince’s Trust ambassador', and the pair will 'watch young people doing sport activities in the hall', and then 'meet a group of young people who are regular users of the centre'.

Perhaps His Majesty will also suggest some tactics for Euro 2024, too...

Princess Kate’s video revealed big news — and a very different style of royal communication

LONDON — The world’s focus was on the news — that Kate, the Princess of Wales, had completed her chemotherapy treatment . But the video used to share that message was far from a typical piece of royal messaging.

The video itself has made headlines , with royal watchers wondering what its sepia-toned production value signals for the institution, and whether its emotive content indicates a new approach for a family that has long struggled to balance a fierce desire for privacy with public demands for transparency.

Kate, 42, announced Monday that she had finished her treatment and would step up her return to public duties. But rather than a traditional text statement or a pared-back piece to camera like the video used to announce her cancer diagnosis , the news was shared in a three-minute video that broke with royal tradition.

Kate Princess Of Wales Video

It features images of Kate, Prince William and their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, having a family picnic in the woods and playing on the beach — sharing hugs and laughs in home-video style. It’s accompanied by mellow music, cinematic angles, slow-motion effects and Kate’s voiceover detailing her cancer journey.

There are also shots showing Kate placing her head on William’s shoulder, as well as the couple hugging and kissing — a level of intimacy rarely displayed by the royals in public.

And it left some royal observers stunned.

“In more than a decade of covering the royal family, I’ve never seen a video like this,” said NBC News royal contributor Emily Nash.

“It’s the most intimate we have ever seen the Wales family,” she added. “And what really stood out was the public displays of affection, which William and Kate are not particularly well known for.”

That intimacy may have been carefully curated, if not choreographed, royal historian Sarah Gristwood told NBC News. “But it’s not the direction the royal family has taken before,” Gristwood said.

The video montage was recorded earlier and released by the princess as she gave an update on her treatment.

While the royal family has always sought to present itself as a champion of family values, it hasn’t done so in quite this way, she said. “The stylistic choices made — it is a bit of a shock to see coming from that source in this country.”

During the reign of late Queen Elizabeth II , the public saw pictures of her family that were quite carefully posed and formal, Gristwood said. A famous and controversial documentary, aired in 1969, attempted to show an intimate portrait of the royal family’s daily life, but lacked open portrayals of affection.

“So now, not much more than half a century on, this is a world away,” Gristwood said.

And while King Charles has chosen to be more revelatory and informal in his communications style after ascending the throne, the video released by Kate and William, the future king and queen, is “a huge leap forward into a new media age,” she added.

Kate and William have been militant about guarding their privacy, an approach that critics say helped fuel widespread speculation about Kate’s well-being earlier this year. The saga stirred rare criticism of the royals, who have long clashed with demands for accountability despite their public profile and taxpayer-funded millions.

Now Kate and William seem to have embraced that which they railed against.

“They wanted to leave nothing to chance this time,” Nash said.

“I think that with the difficulties of the past year, William and Kate have understood that they do need to control the narrative to a degree,” she added. “This was a really stylish and beautiful way of doing this.”

The Princess of Wales describes her 'scary' health journey in a new video message on Sept. 9, 2024.

But not everyone agreed.

Marine Hyde, a columnist for The Guardian newspaper, asked “who could possibly feel it was anything but sad that a recovering post-chemo mother should feel that this is her best option for keeping ‘well-wishers’ at bay a little longer.”

It also remains to be seen whether the public will embrace this new approach, Gristwood said.

“The British tend, of course, to be traditionally a bit cautious about open displays of feeling and about anything which is almost too professional, if you like, too perfectly styled,” she said. But that may be different, she said, with the video’s likely target audience: “The younger half of Prince William’s future subjects, who, at the moment, have been less committed to the royal family than their elders.”
