3 Day San Juan Island Camping Kayak Tours

Explore the san juan islands.

Price: $925 / Person

I had dreamt of this trip for years. My very high expectations were easily surpassed. The trip was tailored perfectly to our group, from routes, to itineraries, to campsite, to (very very delicious) food. Haven’t stopped smiling since. (Review 2023)

Our 3-Day San Juan Island Kayak Camping Tour is pretty hard to match. So it is easy to see why this is the most popular overnight kayak tour option we offer, a perfect blend of expedition-style camping and relaxing vacation.

Paddle between islands and reconnect to the outdoors. Overnight kayak tours are the best way to step away from the day-to-day grind and listen to the water pass along the hull of your kayak. A diversity of wildlife resides in the San Juans. Seals, Sea Lions, Porpoises, and Whales all share the various waterways we travel.

On evenings that present the proper conditions, we will head back out into the darkness to observe the sparkling Bioluminescence.

What sets us apart? Keep on reading.

August Specials

Looks like we have some spaces we can fill on our amazing 3-Day Kayak Adventures. See our calendar of dates and reserve online. Use Promo Code AUG24 and Save 10% Off.

We offer a limited amount of 3 Day Kayak Tours every season. We do so to ensure we have a complete focus on the quality of the kayak tours. We do a lot of planning and customized menus for each tour and we do not want to rush any of the processes. For this reason, we do sell out of space and recommend booking well in advance.

Is the date you want sold out or not listed? Complete the Kayak Tour Request Form and we will get back to you if we are able to accommodate your request.

Gourmet Camp Cusine

One of the many reasons guests come back for another 3-day kayak adventure is our food. Guides custom design meal plans for each tour. We source as much as we can from our organic garden and the rest from local farmers when possible. Each day, guides will prepare healthy and fresh meals. Please do not hesitate to ask for the recipes!

Day 1: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 3: Breakfast and Lunch

Quality Equipment

We go the extra mile when it comes to the equipment we use. All camping equipment is in excellent condition. Tents are spacious with plenty of room to stretch out in the evenings. Warm Marmot sleepings bags paired with comfortable Therm-A-Rest sleeping pads and camp pillows make for a great nights rest.  Enjoy traveling in fiberglass kayaks with lightweight Werner Paddles. Provided Seal Line dry bags will keep all of your belongings nice and dry. We select our equipment with care and put it to the test. Only the best is selected for our tours.

The campsites we utilize on the three-day kayak tour are all typically equipped with water, picnic tables, composting toilets, comfortable flat ground for tents, and a variety of trails to explore. All island campsites visited are maintained by Washington State Parks. Camps do NOT have showers or electricity.

Each island we camp on has its own charm and character. Jones Island offers some of the most beautiful campsites with amazing sunsets and great hiking. Stuart Island campsites are tucked away and protected in a deep bay that provides great opportunities to see feeding Osprey and Harbor Seals patrolling the area in search of fish. Enjoy a hike through the countryside to one of the best sunset spots in the San Juan Islands.

Kayak Guides

Discovery kayak guides are highly skilled kayakers with strong naturalist (wildlife education) and history backgrounds. Not only are they skilled on the water, they take care of you at camp. All of our guides go through an extensive training period that requires a high level of dedication to complete. We spend long days on the water training to gain all the skills necessary to be a professional kayak guide. Off the water, we spend a lot of time in a classroom setting learning all the details of expedition planning, island history, the dynamics of the ocean waterways, and the animals and organisms that make up the complex island ecosystem. Multiday guides are also responsible for planning, prepping, and cooking each gourmet meal in the field. From freshly brewed coffee with a hearty breakfast in the morning, to delicious and filling dinners, rest assured your guide has thought of it all.

3 Day San Juan Island Camping Kayak Tours Testimonial

Venus M. - Review (2023)

Route & Itinerary

We use our extensive experience of the San Juan Islands to custom plan each route. Guides will factor in wind, tides, and currents to determine the  safest and best route . We balance all factors to provide the best camping and whale watching opportunities.

  • Check-in Time: 7:45 AM
  • Location: Discovery Sea Kayaks shop, 260 Spring St. Friday Harbor, Washington.
  • Pack Dry Bags (if dry bags were not picked up the night before)
  • Meet and Greet with kayak guide and guests.
  • The guide will cover trip and travel plan.
  • Depart for launch location

Once at the beach, your guide will instruct the group on proper packing and kayaking techniques. There will be time for a restroom break just before launching. The rest of the day will be on the water kayaking to the first-night camping location. Lunch break will take place mid-day. Dinner will be prepared early evening prior to or after a short hike. Before everyone slips away to their tents your guide will cover the next day’s plan.

The second day of the tour is the most flexible. We tend to travel to another campsite on day two but base camping is an option, as will be covered during the shop meet and greet on day one. Day 2 starts with fresh coffee and breakfast. Soon after breakfast, it will be time to break camp and head out for another day of kayak exploration of the San Juan Islands. Mid-day there will be another break for a beach lunch and opportunity to stretch legs before getting back into the boats. Once at camp, kayaks are unloaded its time to relax. Dinner will be prepared early evening and your guide will cover the final day’s trip plan.

On the the third and final day of the kayak tour we will make our way back to San Juan Island. The morning will start again with fresh coffee and breakfast. Following breakfast, everyone will break camp and pack kayaks. Day three is rarely spent back-tracking our first day’s route. This means the last day is just as exciting and unforgettable as the first. Again, there will be a short break part-way through the day as well as a lunch break. At the final beach location, everyone will unpack kayaks and load up for town.  We arrive back in downtown Friday Harbor at an estimated time of 2:30 PM .

Please note the itinerary is a rough outline of travel. We can encounter delays that will affect our departure time and arrival back at the shop. Each day may be altered at the guide’s discretion.

Wildlife & Weather

San Juan Island is home to a wide variety of amazing wildlife:

  • Southern Resident Killer Whales: Salmon-eating whales commonly seen June through mid-October.
  • Transient Killer Whales: Marine mammal-eating whales may be seen throughout the year.
  • Baleen Whales: Humpback Whales and Minke Whales.
  • Porpoise: Harbor and Dalls porpoise are encountered year round.
  • Harbor Seals, California Sea Lions, and Stellar Sea Lions: Fairly Common in these areas.
  • River Otters: More elusive but seen any time of year. Most sightings are early morning or late afternoon.
  • Bald Eagles: San Juan hosts a healthy population of Bald Eagles with many nesting sites.

Every day is different and we can encounter other species of whales, seals, porpoise, and birds not listed above.

Early Season: Spring weather on San Juan is typically cool with daytime temperatures ranging from the low 50’s F to the mid 60’s F. Expect partly cloudy skies with light breezes to windy conditions.

Summer Season: San Juan Island can have some of the most pleasant summer weather. With half the annual rainfall of the Seattle area, San Juan is typically dry all summer. Temperatures range from upper 60’s F to the mid 80’s F. Skies are usually blue and clear, great for evening star gazing.

Late Season: Fall can be one of the best times to visit San Juan. The days become cooler, ranging from the low 50’s F to the mid 60’s F. Winds can be light to moderate depending on the current weather systems.

The OO crew couldn't have been more professional and prepared from the moment they picked us up at Friday Harbor through the launch and landing. It was beyond expectations and worth every penny.

If you’re looking for a fun and unforgettable kayak trip in the San Juan Islands, I highly recommend Outdoor Odyssey. Our 3-day trip was superb.

I am not usually someone to pay for a guided tour, but this was absolutely worth it and a huge highlight during our time in the San Juan Islands. Our guide was awesome. We were a group kids, teens and adults (two families). We learned a lot about the island, and had a ball along the coast for our 7 mile day trip.

The food was excellent. Organic as much as possible, fresh as much as possible, well prepared, and plenty of it.

This trip was one I will never forget. Outdoor Odysseys does such a great job on these kayak trips. Our guides were wonderful. The food was beyond belief...for anywhere, not just a kayaking trip.

This company has been around for a long time. They know how to treat people.

Mount Desert Island Kayak and E-bike Locations

West-side kayak tours meeting in bar harbor-, west-side kayak tours meeting in southwest harbor, maine state e-bike and acadia youth kayaking, about maine state sea kayak.

Hello, My name is Brad Jordan, and I am the owner/operator of Maine State Sea Kayak! This is my life’s dream, and I welcome you to Mount Desert Island (MDI).

Since 1990, Maine State Sea Kayak has been delighting adventurers with specialized kayak tours in Acadia National Park and along the coastlines of MDI. Our excursions primarily utilize tandem sea kayaks made here in Maine. This allows us an opportunity to cover larger distances in a safe and comfortable manner.

Our guide team works diligently to choose the best routes for our participants, highlighting natural, historic, and cultural wonders of the Acadia region. Our routes allow us to respectfully paddle through wildlife habitat, to feel solitude on our excursions, and to focus on providing more purposeful paddling opportunities!

Core values: We are driven by six core values: Build The Team, Be Safe, Share The Passion, Respect Wildlife, Promote Youth Paddling and Be Environmental Stewards.

Why Choose Us?

  • Closest to Nature  – This is our promise to you! If you wish to paddle the quiet-side, we are the only sea kayak company regularly paddling the western shores.
  • Aqua-Safari’s – The name says it all! Our guide’s are master interpreters of their environment. They work diligently while with you to interpret the routes we paddle, to share knowledge of our surroundings, and foster love for nature and all that inhabits it. There is a reason Jeff Corwin chose us when he visited Acadia.
  • Commitment to the Environment – We believe we are extremely blessed to have the opportunity to operate on Acadia’s quiet-side! We strive to give back, to reduce our footprint, to engage locals and visitors in beach clean-ups and initiatives aimed at preserving this beautiful island habitat. We are also Maine’s highest-rated sea kayak outfitter! We thank our team for this!
  • Perfect safety record
  • All guide’s required to demonstrate/maintain rescue and paddle skills beyond holding guide license
  • Fresh, yet experienced ownership- A fresh set of eyes goes a long ways in terms of safety, program planning, and marketing. Procedures should continuously be reviewed/improved upon. It is difficult to do so without seeing the entire operation- Brad is actively involved on every level, seeking feedback from his peers and reaching out to industry leaders- because he is aware that stagnation is risky to business. He focuses on building teams, and allows the rest to occur naturally.

TESTIMONIALS

My husband and I just got back from our anniversary trip. Everything was stellar. Neal was fantastic at the beginning of our reservation and the trip was totally customized for us. We had a three day two night trip that covered four islands . Britta and Kiah were our guides. Britta is like a ball of sunshine and Kiah was super knowledgeable. Food was outstanding and the scenery can’t be beat. Equipment was well-used but reliable and functional. I would go again.

Lake Superior said no to kayaking the Apostle Islands sea caves, so we headed to Washburn

Portrait of Keith Uhlig

There was a sign at the top of the steps leading down to Meyers Beach explicitly warning everyone that there was a small-craft weather advisory in place. The more important message was implied: Kayaking to the sea caves in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore would have to wait.

This was disappointing, but not unexpected. Meyers Beach, which is west of Bayfield, is the prime launching point for visiting the lakeshore's sea caves. My friend and comrade-in-paddles David Paulsen and I had been planning this quick kayaking getaway for months. But we also had been monitoring the U.S. Weather Service's Marine Zone Forecast for weeks, and meteorologists warned of turbulent waters.

The trip, which called for an overnight stay on Aug. 9 and paddling on Aug. 10, coincided with several fronts moving in and out of the area. No big storms, but whitecaps caused by brisk winds from the west were frothing Lake Superior as far as the eye could see. (I can only presume the winds were worsened by all the hot air coming out of Minnesotans as they yammered on about how "this is the year" for the Vikings, like they do every August.)

Instead of the iconic Apostle Islands paddle, we shifted our goals, taking two kayaking trips on the calmer Chequamegon Bay. Earlier in the day, we paddled north of Ashland. There were waves, but no whitecaps. The bay was protected by northern Wisconsin mainland to the west. We noodled around a wetland area and Fish Creek west of Ashland. While not the Lake Superior sea caves, it was grand fun and worth a trip north on its own.

And after our Apostle Islands paddle was fully thwarted on Saturday afternoon, we gave the bay another shot, this time north of Washburn.

Finding a Lake Superior paddling partner

When I first paddled to the Apostle Islands sea caves on a guided tour in 2017, the experience so resonated with me that I can only describe it as a natural high. One hit, and I became a sea-cave junkie, man.

The tour, through Bayfield kayaking outfitter Trek & Trail , was outstanding. But like an addict, I wanted more. I yearned to paddle to the caves in my own boat, not tied to a group. But there was a problem with that notion. Her name is Kris and she is my wife of 33 years.

Kris has a lot more backcountry experience than I have. Her rule for any kind of dangerous endeavor that involves going into wild, unpredictable areas is that you must do it with a partner. I tried to argue that paddling to the sea caves isn't really a "wilderness" experience, but even I know that argument rings hollow.

Lake Superior is alluring, but It's cold and volatile. Thanks a lot, Gordon Lightfoot, for making Superior's temper famous and giving my wife a solid backing for her argument. A kayaker who isn't prepared, even on a short trip along the shore, can quickly be overcome by hypothermia . You really should partner up for any significant paddling voyage.

"I don't care who you go with," Kris has said, "but you've got to go with somebody."

Enter Paulsen. We've been friends for decades now, and we have taken several trips together up to the Bayfield area. When Paulsen purchased a couple of quality used 14-foot kayaks, I celebrated.

I found my somebody.

Washburn is steeped in the spirit of surfing innovator Tom Blake

Paulsen and I constructed this trip around paddling to the sea caves. We agreed it would be an overnighter, because Paulsen lives in the Milwaukee area. He would pick me up in Wausau on his way north, and we would complete the drive late Friday afternoon/early evening.

The marine weather reports indicated the winds might calm down later in the day on Saturday, so we decided to paddle the relatively calm waters around Ashland in the morning. If you've ever driven through Ashland on U.S. Highway 2, you've likely noticed Maslowski Beach . It's perfect for launching kayaks.

From the beach, we paddled parallel to U.S. 2 to the west, then crossed under it to explore the wetland area on the road's south side. It's a reedy, primal area, and as we crossed under the road and into the tall grasses, we saw a bunch of birds, ducks and long-legged, long-billed wading species. Egrets, I think, but I can't say with authority because I am only a half-assed birder .

Even as we explored those areas, we hoped the conditions farther north at Meyers Beach would temper as forecasts predicted. When we arrived at Meyers Beach, it was obvious that Superior had dashed our hopes. I wondered why forecasts that thwart my plans are always right, but the ones that are encouraging for my outings tend to be wrong. Oh well, that's Wisconsin.

We shrugged off our disappointment and drove back down to Chequamegon Bay.

We found a great launching point in Washburn, near the end of Central Avenue, across from the Washburn Marina. This was a popular place, with plenty of other kayakers coming and going. There were guided groups learning to paddle coming in and out. Not too many that we had to wait to launch, but enough to give us some comfort that our decision to paddle here instead of the northern shore was the right one.

Washburn is the hometown of Tom Blake, a legend among surfers as an innovator who developed a hollow, lighter surfboard . Decades ago, Blake carved the words "Nature=God" into the rock of the shoreline north of Washburn. I found the carving once, near Houghton Falls State Natural Area . I aimed to find it again.

We paddled along, into various notches and shallow caves. I found Blake's carving once before, but I hiked in from land and blundered upon the sport. This time, searching from the water, we had no such luck.

There were people along the shore almost the entire route we took, nearly six miles out and back. They were swimming, jumping off rocks, sitting on platforms built into the rocks. Paulsen and I noodled along, stopped and listened to waves lapping against sandstone. We took photos. Paddled through tunnel like gaps.

On the surface, the whole overnight trip was a flop. We wanted to get to the sea caves. We didn't. As a consolation prize, we wanted to see Blake's carving. We didn't.

But as we paddled back to the Washburn beach, we certainly didn't feel like we failed. I would argue that we felt the spirit of Tom Blake. We certainly melded with nature. God was there, too, I contend.

I think Paulsen agreed. "This is transcendent!" he said at one point.

We'll be back.
