Sugar, spice and all things rice

Spicy. Sweet. Salty. Sour. The four ‘S’s of Thailand’s cuisine. We’d also add Sticky (mango rice), Sizzling (your tongue after a green Thai curry) and Scaly (fried crickets – sorry Jiminy). Dig into Thai street food on our included Phuket tour feat. fresh-off-the-grill chicken skewers and coconut cake that’s legit fluffier than a cloud. Mmm... And opt for a traditional Thai cooking class to flex those mad chef skills (or just learn to fry a chili – you got this).

Your Thailand Qs answered

What’s thailand’s local currency.

Thai baht (THB).

How much does a Thailand trip cost?

It depends! You’ll need to budget for spending money, meals (only the ones which aren’t included, obvs) and those immense optional activities. Go through your itinerary and think about the optionals you’re keen to experience – it’s all part of the fun!

Is there easy ATM access in Thailand?

ATMs are common in Thai cities, but less so in rural areas. Remember to let your bank know you’re travelling!

What’s the climate like in Thailand?

Thailand has a tropical climate. Its three seasons include a wet season (May to October), a cool season (November to February) and a hot season (March to May).

Why is Thailand called the ‘Land of Smiles’?

Thailand is known as the ‘Land of Smiles’ due to the warm, friendly hospitality of the locals.

Bonus questions...

From November to March temperatures are cooler and more comfortable, and landscapes are lush following the wet season. July to October is the best time to go for smaller crowds and lower prices.

Likewise, Wi-Fi in Thailand is widely available in urban areas but likely to be patchier in more remote places.

What do I need to charge my devices in Thailand?

Thailand uses Type C and Type O plugs (230 volts). Type A and Type B plugs can also be used.

We recommend you bring a universal plug adapter – airports usually sell them, but it’s cheaper to buy one before you go.

How much? = Tao rai (tow-rye)?

Where is the bathroom? = Haawng naam yuu thee nai (hong-nam-you-tee-nye)?

Songkran (13-15 April) brings in the Thai New Year – prepare to get WET as water fights break out across the country! During Loy Krathong (November), the ‘festival of light’, locals pay their respects to the Goddess of Water by releasing candle-lit rafts onto lakes, rivers and canals. Birthdays of the monarchy are also celebrated throughout the year.

Land of Smiles

There is certainly a lot to smile about when you vacation in Thailand. Here, the Old World meets something entirely new. From temples to markets to food to waterways to beaches to nightlife, there is something to please everyone. As Thailand – a constitutional monarchy – is the only country in Southeast Asia to not have been colonized by Europeans, its cultural identity remains largely intact. And the Thai people, among the friendliest in the world, love to share their country with visitors. The only question is what not to see!

Destination Must-See's

Thailand ms1

Bangkok, or the City of Angels, was founded in 1782 by King Rama I – first king of the present Chakri dynasty. It has come a long way in 235 years. It is the political, economic, cultural, culinary, and spiritual capital of Thailand, and one of the world’s most visited cities. With so much to offer, how does one prioritize? Start with its temples, such as Wat Pho, Wat Phra Kaew, and Wat Arun. For more culture, visit the Grand Palace and the National Museum.

Thailand ms2

Buddhist Temples:

Buddhist temples in Thailand are known as wats. There are more than 30,000 temples in Thailand – 400 functioning temples in Bangkok alone. Wat Pho in Bangkok is Thailand’s most sacred site, and home to the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. This golden Buddha is 151 feet long and the largest in Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew, also in Bangkok, is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s most sacred Buddha sculpture carved out of green jade. Bangkok’s Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, has the tallest prang (tower) in Thailand – 220 feet high – decorated with bits of porcelain and seashells.

Thailand ms3

The Grand Palace:

The Grand Palace, located in Bangkok, is actually many buildings. King Rama I, founder of the Chakri dynasty, began construction of his royal palace in 1782, and it was used as a royal residence until 1925. Surrounded by four walls, it has a total area of 2,351,000 square feet. There are three main zones: the Outer Court (royal offices, public buildings, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha); the Middle Court (important residential and state buildings); and the Inner Court (exclusive to the King, Queen, and consorts). It is a must-see in Bangkok.

Thailand ms4

Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai:

In the north of Thailand there are two cities definitely worth a visit. Chiang Rai is the northernmost large city in Thailand. It was founded in 1262 as the second capital of the Lanna kingdom, after Chiang Saen. Some notable sites are temples such as the Wat Rong Khun Temple (the white temple); the Saturday Walking Street market and the Night Bazaar; and the Hill-Tribes Museum and Education Centre. Chiang Mai, or the “Rose of the North,” is Thailand’s northern capital. It succeeded Chiang Rai as the capital of the Lanna kingdom in 1296. Some notable sites here are Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, the most famous of the city’s 300 temples; and the Sunday Evening Walking Street market.

Destination Must-Do's

Thailand md1

Markets are a way of life for the Thai people, and they are popular with visitors as well. The Chatuchak Market in Bangkok has more than 8,000 shops on weekends. Vendors sell fruits and vegetables, clothes, pottery and ceramics, basketry, accessories, flowers, and even pets, among other things. The Silom district of Bangkok has all manner of shopping, from a mall to markets, including a night market. Night markets have a lively atmosphere. You can find local items here, along with food, drink and live music. They can get quite crowded. Floating markets emerged as a result of daily commerce being done along rivers and klongs (canals). Damnoen Saduak, outside Bangkok, is the most famous.

Thailand md2

Thai Cuisine:

Thai cuisine is a balance of five flavors: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and spicy. Most people know of pad Thai, or fried noodles, but there are many other dishes to try. Tom Yam Goong is a spicy shrimp soup made with a broth of lemongrass, chillies, lime leaves and juice, and fish sauce. Tom Kha Kai is a spicy chicken soup with chillies and lemongrass in a coconut milk broth. Som Tam, or spicy green papaya salad, perfectly represents all five flavors. Kao Pad is fried rice with egg, onion, and herbs. Gaeng Keow Wan Kai is chicken in green curry – green curry paste stirred into hot coconut milk. And there is so much more! Most dishes are served with rice, a Thai staple. If you prefer to not have your mouth on fire, ask for “mai phed,” or not spicy.

Thailand md3

The waterways in Thailand have long been an integral part of life here. Bangkok was once called the “Venice of the East” because of its klongs, or canals. Many have been filled in, but there are still some that are used for floating markets. A long-tail boat, a lightweight vessel with narrow beams, high-pointed bows and a canopy, is used as a floating market “stand,” but visitors can take rides in these boats as well. Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River – “the River of Kings” – is the dividing line between the east and west of the city. And in the north of Thailand, the mighty Mekong River forms a border between Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, known as the Golden Triangle.

Thailand md4

Kanchanaburi:

The bridge that spans the River Kwai, subject of a famous book and 1957 film, is part of the infamous Death Railway in the Kanchanaburi province in western Thailand. The 258-mile railway, built by Allied prisoners of war and native laborers, served to connect Thailand and Myanmar by land so that the Imperial Japanese Army didn’t have to transport their supplies by sea. It is estimated that more than 100,000 POWs and laborers died during construction, hence the Death Railway name. Today, both the bridge and railway are symbols of peace. There are also two museums and a war memorial.

Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Top 10 iconic Thai landscapes

Whether you're traveling by tuk-tuk through the crazy streets, cycling along backroads, or taking a longtail through the khlongs, the journey in Bangkok is definitely half the fun. Drop into the stunning Grand Palace, see the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, and wind your way through floating markets.

2. Chiang Mai

This northern capital is overflowing with experiences. Temple-hop through some - or all - of its 300 temples, take a cooking class to learn the secrets of Thai cuisine, and explore the Night Bazaar for delicious food, designer goods, and a foot massage to die for.

If you ever wondered what was below Thailand's turquoise waters, this is the place to look. Learn to dive or pull on snorkeling gear to discover the fish and reefs that call this coastline home. Shark Island is close by for adrenaline seekers.

4. Hilltribe Country

Thailand's north is home to many of the country's minority groups. A hike along buffalo tracks will take you through colorful H'mong, Karen, and Lisu villages. Spend a night as their guest for a unique insight into their life.

5. Ayuthaya

Modern meets ancient in Ayuthaya. The current city intertwines itself with the remnants of what was once one of Asia's great capitals. Walk the streets in search of clues to its imperial past and hire a bike to ride through the countryside, exploring the area's ruins.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

8. Golden Triangle

The area where the Thai, Laotian, and Burmese borders meet has long been associated with colorful cultures and illicit opium trade. The opium may have gone but the color hasn't and the markets offer all sorts of amazing local handicrafts.

9. Khao Sok National Park

For a real jungle experience, spend a couple of days in Khao Sok National Park. Thick rainforests, limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and mountains make a wild playground.

10. Kanchanaburi

This tranquil town is the jumping-off point for visits to the infamous Hell Fire Pass and River Kwai. Be sure to take a ride along the tracks of the Death Railway and reflect on the atrocities of war at the Jeath War Museum.

Top places to visit in Thailand

1. chiang mai.

Visit a park that provides a sanctuary for elephants – many of which have been rescued from the cruel practices of the elephant riding industry.

Spot schools of colorful tropical fish as you snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Ao Nang.

Dive into the warm waters of Phuket and experience a little bit of paradise.

4. Erawan National Park

Cool off in the waters of Erawan National Park or simply stand back and watch the idyllic waterfalls.

Follow the scent of chilli and lemongrass to one of Bangkok’s many delicious food markets.

Pedal around ancient temples and ruins built as early as the 13th century at the World Heritage-listed Sukhothai Historic Park.

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay, is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognisable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

  • Makha Bucha Day

Songkran Festival (Thai New Year)

H.M. King's Coronation

Visakha Bucha Day

Queen Suthida's Birthday

King Vajiralongkorn's Birthday

Buddhist Lent Day

Queen’s Birthday

Anniversary of the Death of King Bhumibol

Chulalongkorn Day

King’s Birthday

Constitution Day

Please note dates of  Thai public holidays may vary.

Is tipping customary in Thailand?

Tipping isn’t customary in Thailand, but feel free to leave restaurants, drivers or service workers a small tip if the service has been particularly good. It’s always appreciated.

What is internet access like in Thailand?

The Internet can be accessed at hotels and internet cafes in large cities and tourist areas but is limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Thailand?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Thailand’s urban areas, but may not be available on some of the islands and in more remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Thailand?

Squat toilets are most common in Thailand, although western-style flushable toilets can be found in larger hotels and some tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided.

Can I drink the tap water in Thailand?

Drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Thailand. Avoid drinks with ice and make sure to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Thailand?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors and family-run restaurants in rural areas. Market stalls and street vendors will not accept credit cards. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Thailand?

ATMs are widely available in larger cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Thailand?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Thailand but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partners, EcoThailand Foundation and World Animal Protection.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

EcoThailand Foundation

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Thailand Vacations

For many people, thailand is their introduction to southeast asia — and for good reason. this welcoming and beautiful country, often chosen for vacations, encompasses much of what makes the continent so special, without the headaches that so often come with straying from the beaten path..

While its neighbors have been variously dominated by Dutch, Portuguese, French and British powers, the Kingdom of Thailand has remained defiantly and resolutely independent, with a much-loved monarchy and a history quite distinct from any other country in the region. What’s more, with its huge, hectic cities and laid-back towns, its prehistoric rainforests and its picture-perfect tropical islands, it has all the makings of an unforgettable Southeast Asian vacation.

Thailand first began welcoming tourists back in the 1970s, long before its neighbors, and while this means it’s by no means untouched (in fact, it’s one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world) it does means that this is one of the most well-connected, well-developed, and all-round delightful places to travel in the whole of Asia.

Getting around is a breeze, accommodation is outstanding at all budgets, and the national cuisine is unbeatable, from the lowliest beach shack curry to the most lauded Michelin-starred restaurant. It’s also friendly to a fault, so expect smiles and good humor everywhere you go. We are the winners of specialist luxury operator of the year 2024 . Custom Asia Travel Experience

We had a great day in Ninh Binh! The customer service rep (Molly) was very helpful organising a custom tour so we could see the major sights. Our guide, Thu, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We saw Bai Dinh temple, Hoa Lu ancient city, Bich Dong pagoda, and Tam Coc boat tour. We would recommend this company to others!

Trip of a lifetime!

I cannot say enough positives about Custom Asia Travel! We visited Vietnam in December/January 2023 and had an amazing trip with our 3 teens. The itinerary exceeded our expectations! We travelled to Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Nha Trang. We had no issues with any of our transportation around the country - our drivers and guides were always there on time (early, actually), friendly and helpful. The accommodations were excellent and our guides were fantastic (Tanh, Tanh, and Viet - they were awesome!). Every place we stayed put our rooms right next to each other, often adjoining, and the kids’ room always had two twin beds and a cot, while my husband and I had a king bed. This was perfect as our teenagers did not want to share beds, lol! The activities were super fun and appealed to all of us. So many highlights - the kids loved the rice farm tour (riding the water Buffalo elicited the biggest smile we’ve ever seen from our 16 year old!), seeing the caves in Ninh Binh, the cooking class in Hoi An, and Ha Long Bay. I really appreciated that some of our itinerary was focused on less crowded activities - a couple of the temples we saw were practically empty, allowing us to enjoy and experience these beautiful sites on our own. We did a couple of bike rides which were also highlights, such a great way to explore and see the area! Minh was available and responsive while planning the trip and while we were there. I agree with others reviews about whether she ever sleeps! She was able to coordinate our luggage getting dropped off as it did not arrive with us, and contacted one of the hotels about a ring that had been left, and arranged for us to pick it up. She was warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and so helpful. We truly had a relaxing and stress free trip because of the excellent customer service from Minh and our guides. With only having 12 days to visit we were so grateful to be able to enjoy the travel and know that Minh and her team were there if and when needed. I highly recommend using this company, you will not regret it! Now I am dreaming of how quickly we can make it back!! Thank you thank you to Minh and the team, our trip was unforgettable!

Thailand Attractions & Landmarks Guide

  • Waterfall Abseiling: This gorgeous national park is not just attractive to those wanting a pleasant walk through beautiful nature. Hard-core adrenaline seekers such as rock climbers flock here for waterfall abseiling. They get to apply their skills to an entirely new and more challenging environment. Feeling the spray and mist as adrenaline kicks in, leaning over the beautiful Doi Inthanon waterfall while rappelling down the 35-foot drop to the pool at the bottom.
  • Jungle Trekking: Feel like a true explorer as you venture into the jungle on an unforgettable trek, getting up close and personal with the natural animal and plant life of Thailand. The humidity, lush canopy, and constant buzzing sounds of the rainforest add to the experience.
  • Zipline: Chiang Mai's jungles are for more than just trekking. While you walk on the forest floor, you may hear another sound not traditionally of the jungle: thrill seekers above you soaring through the canopy on zip lines. This popular activity is exciting and a way to get a unique view of the jungle, eye level with what the monkeys and birds see.
  • Elephant Sanctuary: Many travel to Thailand for the country's diverse wildlife, namely elephants. Thailand has been in the hot seat regarding tigers and elephants due to many opinions surrounding the ethics of wildlife tourist experiences.
  • Ko Lanta Island: It's a great place to visit, but it's pretty large — technically a district containing two main islands — so plan to stay a few days to explore it fully. The national park offers a lush rainforest atmosphere and wildlife sightings. You can take a classic motorbike tour of the island and lounge on its many, widely dispersed beaches — Long Beach is one of the best for escaping crowds.
  • Ko-Kraden Island: It takes around three hours to kayak around the entire island, which is the perfect tropical beach getaway. There's only one resort, but the beach is public and offers spectacular views of the mainland and an ocean dotted with other islands and rock formations. It's a great destination for snorkeling in the shallow waters. The island's small size and safe shallow waters make it the perfect day excursion for families.
  • Railway Beach, Krabi Island: Railway Beach is compact but usually relatively quiet. Limestone rock formations burst out of the sea, making for an otherworldly view while you sunbathe on the idyllic soft sand. Bring a pair of binoculars and observe rock climbers in the distance!
  • Koh Kood Island: The least populated island off the eastern coast of Thailand, Koh Kood is perfect for nature lovers looking for a quiet getaway. It's not a place for nightlife, so you'll be there for the ocean and the beach. Kayaking is one of the most popular activities, or take a short walk inland to the Klong Chao waterfall with its beautiful, calm pools, perfect for swimming.
  • Koh Samui: Not as less visited as the ones above, Koh Samui is known for its palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves, and luxury resorts. With its vibrant nightlife, pristine beaches like Chaweng, and cultural attractions like Wat Phra Yai Temple, which has a 12-meter-tall Big Buddha statue, Koh Samui offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
  • Phi Phi Island: Made famous by the movie "The Beach," Phi Phi Island is a tropical paradise with turquoise waters, stunning limestone cliffs, and vibrant coral reefs. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling, diving, and beach hopping on the idyllic shores of Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, and Bamboo Island.
  • Go where the lines are. This is usually a good sign of deliciousness, but also repeat visitors and locals, so the odds of getting ill are minimal.
  • Look for items made to order.
  • Do a quick scan of the stall for indications of general cleanliness, and follow your instincts.
  • Join a Thailand food tour and let your guide take you to the tastiest and the safest stalls and local eateries.

Travel Tips for Your Thailand Trip

When is the best time to visit thailand.

With two distinct seasons, the dry and rainy seasons, the best time to visit Thailand is during the cooler dry season between November and March.

The dry season is the least humid time in Thailand, and with plenty of days of sunshine, you can cruise around the islands and enjoy outdoor activities in comfortable conditions. From visiting famous Thai temples to snorkeling and scuba diving, island-hopping to chasing waterfalls, expect many pleasant days when traveling between November and March.

The temperatures rise from March to July during the early months of the rainy season but rainfall is still relatively infrequent. The heart of the monsoon season arrives in July and lasts until October, though rainfall is inconsistent and showers only last a few hours. You can plan your experiences around these expected conditions.

Thailand Trips in 2024 & 2025

Thailand has long lured travellers with its laid-back beaches, glittering Buddhist shrines and historic cities. North of the frenetic capital, Bangkok, hill tribes, temples and mountains await. In the south, there are countless paradise isles with water so clear you’ll simply have to dive in to believe it. Wherever you end up, be sure to eat up: Thailand’s complex, tastebud-tingling cuisine offers one of the easiest – and most enjoyable – ways to immerse yourself in local culture.

Our Thailand tour reviews

Thailand tour photos from our travellers, thailand travel faqs, do i need a visa to visit thailand.

Visa requirements may change, for the most up-to-date information we recommend using our Entry Requirements tool . Alternatively, check the Thai embassy website in your country of departure.

What vaccinations do I need to visit Thailand?

Proof of a yellow fever vaccination will be required upon entry to Thailand if you’re travelling from these countries in Africa and Latin America.

Other recommended vaccinations include diphtheria, hepatitis a, hepatitis b, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, and tetanus.

As advice can often change, you can check out our Entry Requirements tool for the most up-to-date details on vaccination requirements.

When’s the best time to visit Thailand?

If you’re looking for the best weather, then head to Thailand during the cool, dry season, which runs from November to early April. Temperatures range from 28.5 to 36°C (84°F to 97°F). The exception here is the Lower Gulf of Thailand, which includes the islands of Koh Samui, Ko Pha-ngan, and Koh Tao. These islands see the most rainfall from September through December.

If you travel to Thailand during the shoulder season (late April to early June and October), you’ll miss the swell of high-season crowds and dodge much of the monsoon or low season (July to September). In terms of festivals, Songkran takes place on April 13. Loi Krathong is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the lunar calendar — usually November.

What’s the weather like in Thailand?

Thailand’s climate is defined by the rainy and dry seasons, which change depending on where you are within the country. Northern Thailand tends to have its dry season during the months of November to May, while June to October is the rainy season.

Southern Thailand can be split into two — the west sees the heaviest rainfall between the months of April to October, whereas the east coast sees the most rain from September to December. The rest of the year sees warm, dry weather.

Throughout the year, temperatures across Thailand range from 25°C to 34°C (77-93°F), with April through May being the hottest months and January the coldest.

Is there tipping in Thailand?

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service. Tipping is expected, though not compulsory, and shows an expression of satisfaction with the people helping you on your tour.

There are several times during the trip where there's an opportunity to tip the local guides or drivers we use. You may do this individually, or your CEO will offer to collect the money and tip as a group. Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from USD $1.50-3.50 per person, per day depending on the quality and length of the service.

Tipping your G Adventures CEO is also very much appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however, as a guideline, USD$ 20-25 per person, per week is our recommendation in the region. However, if you felt your CEO did an especially outstanding job, any additional amount is always welcome.

What’s internet access like in Thailand?

Internet access in Thailand tends to be excellent if you’re in towns or cities — even better than in the western world. However, be prepared if you’re in rural or remote areas for it to be limited.

Are there ATMs in Thailand?

There are ATMs widely available within towns and cities, which tend to accept VISA and Mastercard. Expect a rather hefty transaction fee.

In more rural areas or in local villages, you might not be able to pay via credit or debit card, so make sure you bring enough cash with you. Bring USD (post-2003) as a backup in case you want to exchange currency.

As currency exchange rates can fluctuate often we ask that you refer to www.xe.com for daily exchange rates.

Is Thailand LGBTQ+-friendly?

In a word — yes! Thailand is one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly countries in Asia, if not the world. It has a thriving transgender community, and in March 2024, Thailand’s lower house passed a bill giving legal recognition to same-sex marriage.

However, it should be noted that public displays of affection aren’t common in Thailand, so use discretion.

As part of their commitment, all CEOs receive LGBTQ+ inclusion training so every traveller feels respected and welcomed on all of our tours. We commit to making our tours a safe and inclusive place for people to express their authentic selves without judgment, free from any discriminatory language or harassment.

While travelling with G Adventures, all travellers must treat each other with dignity and respect to create an environment that is positive, safe, and where everyone feels welcome. You can find out more via our LGBTQ+ travel page .

What language is spoken in Thailand?

The national language of Thailand is Thai, spoken by about 53% of the population. Other languages spoken here include Lao, Chinese, Malay, and Khmer.

Is tap water in Thailand safe to drink?

While opinions vary in cities like Bangkok, the general rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t drink the tap water in Thailand as a traveller. Stick to bottled water, which costs a mere 10฿ per 500ml.

Please note however that all drinks provided on our tours are safe to drink (including drinks with ice), as well as the water in most hotels and restaurants visited on tour. If in doubt, please ask your CEO for further info.

Is Thailand safe?

‘The Land of Smiles’ is generally considered to be incredibly safe, though as with anywhere in the world, there are occasional things to be wary of.

Political tensions can sometimes arise in the capital Bangkok, which can cause protests. Keep your wits about you when it comes to swimming in the sea, as currents can be strong, and be careful when riding a moped or motorbike. It’s the leading cause of accidents for travellers in Thailand.

G Adventures takes all reasonable measures to ensure your safety and enjoyment while travelling with us. All of the included activities are properly vetted and regularly checked by us, and we take great care in choosing the right transportation, stays throughout your trip, and guides to lead your tour. However, there are always inherent risks when travelling — you can find out more via our travel safety page .

Tour Pacing

This is a very fast-paced tour. Tour pacing considers how often you’ll switch hotels, what you’ll do each day, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:One 1-night stay

  • Most transportation by private motor coach
  • Some transportation by boat and commercial flight
  • Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy

Walking, Terrain & Physical Considerations

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles per day on city streets, cobblestones, and uneven stone and dirt paths.
  • Stone pathways and archaeological sights can become slick when wet.
  • To get in and out of the canal boats in Bangkok, travelers should be prepared to crouch down and slide through tight quarters.
  • Travelers can expect a minimum 2 mile hike over dirt paths, including steep inclines and declines, when visiting the elephant sanctuary.
  • Travelers can expect to walk 2 miles over uneven paths, cobblestones, and steep stairs when visiting Angkor Wat on the extension to Cambodia.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.

Climate Considerations

  • Temperatures are consistent year round, often in the high 90 F.
  • In the wet season (July-October), travelers can expect high levels of humidity and short, intense bursts of rainfall.

Physical Activity & Tour Pacing Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage-handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the whole group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team.
  • Private motor coaches use steps for boarding, and often don’t provide ramps or lifts.
  • This tour utilizes various modes of transportation, including private motor coach, plane, long-boat, covered pick-up truck, cable-car, speed boat, and canoe. To board some of them, you may have to climb raised platforms or steps.

  • You must be able to manage your own luggage while on tour, as porterage isn’t guaranteed. This includes when arriving at hotels or airports and boarding trains or ferries.
  • Luggage storage on trains is extremely limited, and often requires travelers to lift their suitcases onto racks—sometimes located above their seats.
  • You should be prepared to manage your bags during ferry transfers. This includes carrying them up and down boarding ramps, lifting them onto racks, and navigating spaces crowded with other people and motor vehicles.
  • Elevators in hotels aren’t guaranteed.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets, so our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and included flights.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights. Please note that your included on-tour flights may have more restrictive baggage limits.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotel and airports.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • Please note that you will be required to remove your shoes at all Buddhist religious sites.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit temples or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • Waterproof shoes or sandals, a swimsuit, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended for outdoor activities.
  • Binoculars are handy for a closer look at local wildlife and scenery.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • In case of emergencies, we also recommend packing your medical insurance card in your carry-on.
  • Please note: Porterage isn’t included on train transfers, and storage space is extremely limited. You should feel comfortable lifting and carrying your bags over steps, onto platforms, and into storage. To make things easier, we recommend traveling with one suitcase and personal item (e.g. a backpack or purse) per person.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three-to-four-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
  • Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets; as such, our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please be advised that the air conditioning in Asian hotels and buildings is often not as strong or cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
  • Thailand (plus Cambodia on the tour extension) operates on 230 volts.
  • Thailand uses Types A, B, C, or O plugs with two flat pins, two flat and one rounded pin, or two or three rounded pins, respectively.
  • Cambodia uses Types A, C, or G plugs with two flat pins, two rounded pins, or three flat pins, respectively.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour and any possible delays encountered.
  • Please be sure to take proper care with sun exposure as the sun can be especially strong in some of the areas you are visiting.
  • Drink bottled water only. Refrain from drinking tap water, including when brushing your teeth.
  • Avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they are cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.
  • Bring a small first aid kit, including antacids, anti-diarrhea medication, motion sickness medication, and any prescription medications in your carry-on bag.
  • This tour includes four lunches and four dinners: They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, or a soft drink, as well as water, coffee, and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • The lunch at the elephant sanctuary is typically a vegetarian buffet, including water, coffee, and tea.
  • At the Thai Cooking Class & Dinner, some dishes may include sour and spicy prawn soup, Thai green curry with chicken, mango sweet sticky rice and stri fried chicken with cashew (seasonal and subject to change).
  • Traditional Thai cooking uses market-fresh ingredients seasoned with a mix of herbs, spices, and condiments such as chili peppers and fish sauce. The main staple is rice. Most meals include a soup, a curry, a steamed or fried dish, and a salad.
  • On the tour extension, international influence is evident in the Khmer cuisine of Cambodia, where full flavor is created through the mix of herbs and spices such as sweet basil, Asian coriander, mint, lemongrass, and pepper. The base of almost all Cambodian dishes is rice or noodles, served with a curry, soup, or vegetable stir-fry. Grilled freshwater fish is popular, and the fermented fish paste known as prahok is a traditional seasoning.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the Thai baht in Thailand (plus the Cambodian riel on the tour extension).
  • On the tour extension in Cambodia, U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere, though change may be given in riel. Most hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, buses, and airlines list their prices in U.S. dollars, but small transactions (less than a dollar) are usually conducted in riel. Always carry small amounts of riel for motorcycle taxis, snacks, and other small purchases.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers.
  • To help you feel prepared before going on tour, we strongly recommend downloading the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. It’s free and provides information about important deadlines and entry requirements, as well as your detailed itinerary, packing tips, and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the app’s chat feature.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There’s no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will lead your group. Their role is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each day’s activities, and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and can’t provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • You’ll have two different Tour Directors: one in Thailand on the main itinerary and one in Cambodia on the extension.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is having access to our 24/7 Emergency Support Team.
  • Our extensive network of global offices and our integration of ISO 31000 Risk Management Guidelines help this dedicated team anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible, iterative way.
  • Using a combination of extensive training, thorough incident response planning, and decades of experience, this team assists travelers and Tour Directors in case of emergencies—stepping in for everything from personal health concerns and injuries to major world events.
  • Our On-Tour Support team can also provide additional help to travelers on tour, arranging assistance from outside specialists and liaising with local and international authorities as needed. And if there’s an emergency on the road or at home, the team will facilitate and support communication between travelers and their families.
  • Thailand (and Cambodia on the tour extension) is 11 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 11pm on tour.
  • When you travel with Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • Go Ahead Tours encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
  • When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don’t touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
  • Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from tortoiseshell or meals such as shark fin soup.
  • If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.

The Taj Mahal in Agra, India

A timeless monument to love in agra.

You could say that India's Taj Mahal is so famous that it needs no introduction… but it's so compelling a destination that it's hard not to talk about it. Considered the greatest achievement of Indo-Islamic architecture, this exquisite, domed, white marble mausoleum complex in Agra was commissioned in 1632 and completed two decades later as the tomb and memorial of Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Constructed at a cost that would be upwards of USD $825 million today, it ranks among history's most expensive declarations of love. Along with touring it with a local guide, you'll also see it from your hotel room!

Chiang Mai's hill tribe villages

Meet the hill tribe villagers of chiang mai in thailand.

Outside Thailand's city of Chiang Mai, the people of the region's remote, rural hill tribes farm and observe traditional ways of life. Each tribe has its own language, beliefs, customs and crafts... and its people are happy to share them with visitors to their colorful villages. Meet members of the Palong, Padong and the "long-necked" Karen tribes, whose women are known for the distinctive, traditional brass rings worn around their necks – which you can try on yourself.
