Our chiang mai school and university tours, an introduction to our thailand educational tours.

Green Trails is a specialist in Thailand Educational Tours . In this article, we elaborate on our tours and present sample programs on this website. We customize our Chiang Mai School and University study tours to the specific requirements of each school or university. We are very open to suggestions and feedback.

Our tours always abide by our mission statement and are a mutually beneficial experience. We strive to offer a life-changing experience to young people, visitors, and hosts.

Our partners in educational tours

Over the years we have organized many trips for schools and universities and for companies that offer trips for high school and university students. I will mention a few of them. Since 2018 we have organized trips for University Studies Abroad Consortium ( USAC ), a not-for-profit organization that provides students with life-changing opportunities to live and learn in Thailand.

We have organized a trip for the HeadStart International School from Phuket, for GEMS World Academy (Dubai), GEMS Dubai American Academy , and Raha International School and Gardens Campus from the United Arab Emirates. Furthermore, we added these high schools to our experience portfolio before the pandemic: Duncraig Senior High School (Australia), Moreau Catholic High School, (USA), Sweet Water High School, (USA), and Fort Worth Christian School (USA).

For the Canadian company Insight Global Education , we organized two trips for the Sage Hill School from the US. In 2023 we took care of the Community-based Tourism Minor for Stenden University and organized a trip for the Shenzen International school from China.

A bit of history of our school and university tours

Over the years, Green Trails has gained a lot of experience with school and university tours. It started in 1998 when we began organizing tours for Tanglin Trust School from Singapore. That tour included an elephant experience, a visit to the buffalo training center, an educational bicycle ride, and trekking and bamboo rafting on the Pai River.

We also spent two days doing activities and interacting with students in a Karenni refugee camp on the Thailand-Myanmar border near Mae Hong Son . We organized these tours from 1998 until 2003. The tours for Tanglin Trust were our first steps on the path of educational experiences for schools and universities. For both Karenni and Tanglin Trust students, these trips were life-changing experiences.

Our Chiang Mai School tours

We have organized Chiang Mai school and university tours for several years, primarily for tour operators from Europe, the United States, Singapore, and Australia. We have organized Chiang Mai University Tours for universities from the UK and Australia. Requirements for high school or university students are slightly different.

We have cooperated with USAC, the United States Abroad Consortium, for a couple of years. USAC is a non-profit organization that offers study abroad programs for university students, mainly from the US. We have been responsible for the hill tribe field study, a more academic program focusing on anthropology . For USAC students, we also take care of a three-day/two-night trek in the Mae Wang area.

Ethnic Minorities of North Thailand

Visits to communities of ethnic minorities or hill tribes of North Thailand are essential components of our tours. We are dedicated to the preservation of the culture and languages of these groups. During our tours, we pay a lot of attention to the extraordinary traditions and lifestyles of the Akha , Hmong , Lisu, and other groups.

Many of our tours include at least one overnight in a tribal community. I have made a page where you can find a lot of information on the ethnic minorities of North Thailand. We also have pages about each specific group. We are adding content to these pages regularly.

Chiang Mai Tribal Textile tours

Over the years, we have organized several tours focusing on tribal textiles. Seeing people in traditional dress was one of the reasons tourists went on multiple-day trekkings in the North of Thailand. Photographs taken in the 1970s still show most of the people in tribal villages wearing beautiful, colorful traditional dresses. People wore the clothes they or someone in the village had handcrafted.

For students of textiles, we can organize tribal textile tours to villages of the Hmong, Palong, Lisu, Akha, Yao, and Karen people. You will learn traditional weaving and embroidery techniques, batik, natural dying, etc. We love the traditional dress! Through our tours, we hope to contribute to the preservation of the work of traditional textile artisans.

Teambuilding community service

We offer Chiang Mai university tours that include team-building community service activities in ethnic minority villages. These tours usually take four or five days. In consultation with the community, we select a suitable project. After that, we will make a plan and buy construction materials. Part of the tour costs will fund the project, which could be a public utility project, a school playground, and so on. For Moondance Adventures we have done Community Service trips since 2014.

During their stay in the village, students will learn about the villagers’ customs, religion, traditions, language, and way of living. We have been working with a small number of communities for many years, and our guides know the local people very well. We have made many successful Chiang Mai school trips to Karen communities near Doi Inthanon , Thailand’s highest mountain. Our Community Immersion trip is a good example.

Evaluation and Impact

There is a constant evaluation of our tours and our impact on the community. We try to keep our impact as low as possible and maximize the benefits for all involved. Quite often, this kind of tour turns into a one-sided experience from which only the visiting students benefit. Our Thailand Educational tours are designed so that local students will also benefit and be involved in the experience. We realize that this is not an easy task. Before we organize a tour, there is a process of a lengthy discussion with representatives of the community.

The holistic approach of our Chiang Mai university tours

We will teach students about different ways of life, unknown religions, and other interesting aspects of the host community.  We will pay attention to the history of communities and issues concerning ethnic and indigenous groups, such as land ownership, education, healthcare, discrimination, and legal status.

Some villages, such as the Dara-ang ( Palong or Palaung) and the Hmong , offer opportunities to learn traditional weaving or batik techniques. Check out our Dara-ang trip .

The beauty of languages

We love languages, and they play an essential part in our tours. The Hmong, Karen, Dara-ang (Palong or Palaung), Lisu, Lahu, Akha, and Yao people each have their language. Most of these languages belong to different language groups and are often mutually unintelligible. We value this fascinating diversity and will do our best to help in its preservation. Please look in our hill tribe section for more information about these languages.

Disappearing minority languages

Ethnic minority groups have become increasingly integrated into the Thai school system over the past fifty years. Hill tribe students now learn to read, write and speak Thai at school. At home, they talk about the language of their ethnic group. These languages are spoken less and less, eventually leading to the disappearance of many of these languages.

We will teach students some words in the host community’s language and explain the source. This is a lot of fun, but it is also a great way to interact with the local people. In the below video Ong of the Dara-ang village, Mae Chon, counts from one to ten in her language. These languages are fascinating and worth keeping alive.

Thailand’s national animal

The elephant is the official national animal of Thailand. The species prevalent in Thailand is the Indian elephant, which is a subspecies of the Asian elephant . Allegedly there were about 100,000 elephants in Thailand about one hundred years ago. Currently, there are between 3,500 and 4,000 wild and domesticated elephants in the country. The World Conservation Union has listed the Asian Elephant as an endangered species.

We want to keep encounters with animals during our Chiang Mai school tours to a minimum for ethical and health reasons. Upon request, we will make an exception for elephants. Up to now, we have organized Chiang Mai University tours to a limited number of venues, of which we are sure the animals are treated very well. We realize that visiting elephant “sanctuaries” can be a sensitive issue. In all cases, we will ensure that your visit will positively impact the conservation of these magnificent animals. We work with Elephant Nature Park and with the Maesa Elephant Conservation Park .

Chiang Mai International School Tours

We have organized several Chiang Mai International school tours that combine experiences in communities with educational tours in Chiang Mai itself. Green Trails has good relations with Buddhist learning centers in Chiang Mai such as the Buddhist University at Wat Suan Dok . An introduction to Buddhism is always good to include in any visit to Thailand. Short meditation courses  or even an hour-long meeting with a monk are worthwhile experiences.

People eating at a table

The religions of Chiang Mai

We can include a half-day walk during which you will pass or visit different places of worship. Students will pass the First Christian Church, a Sikh Gurdwara , a Chinese pagoda, a Buddhist temple and the biggest mosque of Chiang Mai. People of different religions live close to each other peacefully. That is one of the things that make Chiang Mai such a special place. This educational walk is great for Chiang Mai school tours.

Markets and cooking courses

Healthy food and agriculture play an essential part in our Thailand educational tours. Fresh markets are learning centers, and Chiang Mai has plenty of them. On the Warorot Market , you can wander for hours, learning about herbs, delicacies, cooking ingredients, curry pastes, and many other things you probably have never seen before. Each product has its own story. You will find Vietnamese pancakes, Indian curries, Burmese cakes, Chinese dumplings, and so on. The Thai kitchen is one of the most famous in the world. Undoubtedly, Chiang Mai is the best place in Thailand for a cooking course. We included market visits in our Chiang Mai Educational Tour .

Chiang Mai’s History

History is an important component of our Thailand Educational Tours. Chiang Mai’s History is not only about visiting Buddhist temples. For centuries the city was part of a Burmese kingdom. The Burmese influences are still visible but are a bit under the surface. In the early 19th century, Chiang Mai was virtually depopulated after decades of war and unrest. Its ancient temples were in ruins. Under King Kawila , Chiang Mai rose from the ashes: the city was “repopulated,” and temples were reconstructed. It is an interesting story that you will not find in guidebooks.

McKean Senior Center

In the 19th century, Christian missionaries and other westerners arrived in Chiang Mai, leaving a legacy such as the McKean Senior Center . This beautiful property on the Ping River should be on the list of Chiang Mai heritage sites. We take students on a bicycle ride through this former leprosy colony. The ride ends in Wiang Kum Kam , a ruined city that predates Chiang Mai. In short, we will show aspects of Chiang Mai’s history that most visitors miss out on simply because no one takes them there.

About the Program

This course satisfies the cultural literacy requirement.

The Thailand Summer Study Tour ( INTL360) will be led by Professors John Schroeder and Bradley Park from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and includes 5 pre-departure course meetings on Buddhist philosophy, Thai culture, Thai language, and social norms in Thailand. A detailed itinerary will be distributed to students during our pre-departure meetings in March, but here’s a prelude of our adventures:

We’ll begin in Bangkok, spending two days exploring and learning about the vibrant hub of of SE Asia. We will then travel to Nakhom Pathom to visit with the first fully ordained woman monastic in Thai Buddhism (Dhammananda) and participate in a series of seminars and workshops on women and gender in Buddhism. After our brief monastic experience, we will travel by train to Northern Thailand and spend time in Chiang Mai meeting with Burmese monks, visiting refugee camps, meeting with professors and students from Chiang Mai University, participating in a day-long retreat, and going on an elephant trek. After our time in Chiang Mai, we will travel South to Pattaya–a town renowned for its sex tourism–to meet with organizations that work with sex-workers, HIV, and LGBTI life in Thailand.

We’ll spend the final days of our time in Thailand on the beautiful island of Ko Samet–an ideal place for reflection and critical discussion as we play in the Gulf of Siam.

The Thailand Study Tour counts as an upper division course in philosophy and religious studies, is cross-listed with Asian Studies, and also fulfills the cultural literacy requirement (previously ELAW). The class will explore traditional and contemporary Buddhist views on the relationships between Buddhist wisdom and social justice. An important goal of the course is to connect the intellectual and scholarly knowledge that you will learn about Buddhism with the concrete experience of being in a Buddhist culture, meeting important Buddhist leaders, and learning first-hand what Engaged Buddhism and Thailand is all about. Thus, you will not only learn about the philosophical and historical roots of of Buddhism–as you would in any academic course on Buddhism–but you will have the opportunity to step outside the classroom and see how Buddhism is actually lived and incorporated into the everyday lives of people throughout Thailand.

Learning about Engaged Buddhism in Thailand is invaluable because we’ll learn from people who apply Buddhist teachings in their efforts to solve pressing issues relating to poverty, environmental destruction, prostitution, war, and violence on local and global scales. We will have the opportunity to meet with a number of leaders of the Engaged Buddhist movement in Thailand and learn first-hand how they apply traditional Buddhist principles to contemporary problems.

Program Description

Thailand is full of beautiful landscapes, architecture, culture, and natives that will keep you entertained and always wondering what will be discovered next. It is truly a land of excitement and adventure! The town of Hua Hin is located approximately 200 kilometers south of Bangkok on the west coast of the Gulf of Thailand. It is the oldest, and most traditional, resort destination in Thailand with the attractions of a modern holiday destination mixed with the charms of an older fishing village from which it draws its roots. The King and Queen of Thailand call Hua Hin home, and it's no wonder why!

Webster University Thailand is a small, closely-knit family of students, faculty and staff occupying a delightful rural campus, situated close to the resort towns of Cha-am and Hua Hin and boasts a beautiful 40-acre campus. The campus has excellent facilities to support your educational experience: computer labs, library, cafeteria, recreational and exercise facilities, media lab, Internet access, and offices. Some of Thailand´s most beautiful beaches are just a 15 minute drive from the campus gates!

Webster University-Thailand also hosts a number of major social events during the year, including holiday parties, ice breaker for new students, and talent shows. The Student Services team at Webster Thailand can help you make the most of being in Cha-Am with information on the local area, activities and events across the city.

Webster University Thailand is located a short 30 minute drive from the Gulf of Thailand in a relaxed and stunning natural environment which gives students space to learn together and develop individually. The student community is dynamic, active and engaged providing various extra-curricular opportunities for students. Students can easily explore Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries during their study abroad experience.

Located on 60 beautiful acres in Cha-am, the Webster-Thailand campus provides modern facilities as well as student services, advising, recreational activities, housing, and study options. The campus offers a library and computer center, media lab, gym/sports center, fitness center, tennis courts, volleyball court, cafeteria and more.

Student Housing is located in Hua Hin, a popular beach destination for both locals and tourists. Restaurants and recreational facilities are available near each student housing complex. The housing also has a swimming pool and shuttle service between housing, campus, and Hua-Hin for shopping and recreation.

Attend Webster Thailand and you’ll find the entire country is your classroom. Study abroad students benefit from the cultural diversity and dynamic international environment that is created by joining classmates from over 60 countries in the classroom. Classes are small and highly interactive, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and encouraging of individual talents. All courses are taught in English by highly qualified faculty. The Student's Travel Guide to Thailand

thailand university tour

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

Thailand is one of the destinations we always recommend to student travelers -- it's beautiful, cheap, and sunny, with mountains to climb, beaches to sunbathe on, jungle to trek, and world-class cities to explore.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Language spoken: Thai . Don't worry about not being able to communicate with locals! You'll always be able to find someone who speaks English in any destination that has tourists. Even if you find yourself in the countryside where nobody speaks English, you'll be able to mime in order to find food, accommodation, and transport.
  • Currency used: Thai Baht
  • Capital city: Bangkok
  • Religion:  Mostly Buddhism, with some worshipping Islam and Christianity

Here are our recommendations for where to visit in Thailand.

The capital, Bangkok, is probably where you'll start and end your Thailand adventure. It's also somewhere where you'll end up spending quite a bit of time, even if you don't plan on doing so. It's the main transport hub for Thailand and much of Southeast Asia, so most flights, buses, and trains pass through here.

While in Bangkok, aim to spend at least a few nights partying on  Khao San Road , a true haven for backpackers. You won't experience anything like authentic Thai culture on this infamous street, but it's a rite of passage for any new backpacker and worth checking out for the people watching opportunities alone.

Bangkok isn't just about partying, however. While you're there, be sure to check out some of the floating markets -- the most popular one is Amphawa and for good reason -- it's a fascinating insight into Thai culture. You'll also want to check out the Grand Palace , Wat Pho, and Wat Arun to get an introduction to Thailand's beautiful temples.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a must-see city in Thailand. Our number one tip is the Elephant Nature Park -- a wonderful sanctuary dedicated to rescuing tortured elephants from across Southeast Asia and beyond. You'll be able to spend a day learning about elephants, bathing, and feeding them. You'll also learn why you should never ride elephants, so please don't take one of the elephant treks that are advertised in the city, as these are extremely cruel.

Chiang Mai is full of temples and you won't be able to walk for more than 50 meters without coming across a gleaming wat. While temple fatigue will inevitably soon set in, be sure to explore a few of the temples while you're there -- our favorite is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep , located on the mountain overlooking the city.

Visit Chiang Mai gate (the south gate of the moat) on any evening and search for Mrs. Pa's food cart -- it's the one with the enormous queue. There, you'll be able to buy the best smoothie of your life! Definitely a Chiang Mai highlight.

Chiang Rai makes for a fun weekend getaway from Chiang Mai and hosts two of Thailand's oddest temples.

The White Temple glistens and dazzles from a distance but as you get closer you'll see that the white and silver statues are actually odd depictions of hell. Hands reach up towards you from below as you cross a bridge, demons glare down at you from above. Step inside the temple and you'll find an unconventional mix of traditional Buddhist artwork combined with depictions of 9-11, Neo from the Matrix, and various different Star Wars scenes. The Black Temple is even stranger than the White, with animals skins and skeletons hanging from every wall.

If you like to get your hippie on when you travel, look no further than Pai , just a few hours away from Chiang Mai. It's a beautiful spot, full of laidback backpackers and relaxing guesthouses, all surrounded by some of the prettiest scenery in all of Southeast Asia. Come here if you're looking to get away from the Thai cities and spend your time relaxing in a hammock.

Chiang Dao is another destination that makes for a great weekend away from Chiang Mai. It's a quiet, secluded mountain town with only a few accommodation options. While you're there you can simply relax in a hammock, hike the nearby mountains or explore some of the nearby caves. Chiang Dao is where to head when you're looking to disconnect from the outside world for a few days.

Koh Chang is an island paradise for backpackers. It has an extremely relaxed vibe and is the type of place where you can live in a shack by the ocean for around $3. If you decide to visit Koh Chang, then we can recommend staying on Lonely Beach, where most of the backpackers stay. There, you can sunbathe among palm trees and turquoise waters during the day and dance the night away to Bob Marley tunes at night.

Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi has a reputation as a party island but it's also one of the most beautiful. Here, you can visit Maya Bay, the stunning island where the movie The Beach was filmed, take boat trips to nearby islands where you'll find far fewer people, and hike to the lookout for a stunning view across the entire island.

Koh Lanta is where you should head to when you need a break from all that partying. It's a chilled out island that's perfectly set up for a week of doing nothing but sunbathing on a beach and swimming in the ocean. While you're there, be sure to check out Koh Lanta National Park.

Koh Yao Noi

Want to see what the Thai islands were like before the backpackers turned up? Head to Koh Yao Noi, which is quiet, secluded, and void of tourists. While you're there, you can take a trip to Phang Nga National Park to check out beautiful Koh Hong, take a kayak out for a paddle to Koh Nok, eat spicy local food, or simply hire a scooter and ride around the island.

Launch of Thailand Smart Tour (TST): Elevating Thai Tourism with Digital Technology

Launch of Thailand Smart Tour (TST): Elevating Thai Tourism with Digital Technology

The Thailand Smart Tour (TST) digital platform was launched via Zoom Meeting and Facebook Live. The purpose of this platform is to enhance the convenience of tour management and to connect tour companies with guides more efficiently, as well as to provide knowledge and guidance on how to use the platform in preparation for the enforcement of regulations.

Thailand Smart Tour (TST) aims to improve tour management by incorporating technology for faster and more modern operations and facilitating convenient and safe coordination between tour companies and guides. This platform seeks to eliminate illegal tour companies and guides, which will help enhance the image of the Thai tourism industry while protecting the rights of tourists by providing services only from licensed tour companies and guides.

The Tourism Department invites tour companies and guides to register and start using Thailand Smart Tour (TST). To ensure a smooth transition, the issuance of tour guide assignments must be done exclusively through this platform starting from October 1, 2024.

For more information, please contact the Business Registration and Tour Guide Division at  Tel. 0 2401 1111 or 09 6012 4513.
