Nothing else compares to the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT). Held annually on the picturesque Isle of Man, a small island situated in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, the TT races attract the bravest and most skilled riders, as well as a legion of fervent fans, all drawn by the promise of speed, excitement and danger.

The origins of these races can be traced back to 1907, which makes the Isle of Man TT one of the oldest motorsport events still being contested today.

What sets the TT apart from other motorsport events is where the racing takes place.

The 37.73-mile (60.72km) Snaefell Mountain Course weaves through the island’s villages, countryside, and mountain roads, offering a unique blend of straightaways and sharp turns on public roads closed for the event.

This year, fans lined the banks in big numbers. In fact, the 2024 event – held from late May till early June – had the most spectators since the 2007 centenary TT, with nearly 70,000 people arriving by sea or air to this tiny island nation, almost doubling its population for the fortnight of racing.

The event is so physically large that 2,000 race marshals are positioned around the course.

Unlike the controlled environment of a traditional racetrack, the Mountain Course presents natural hazards: stone walls, lampposts, and even the occasional wayward animal. All these elements amplify the risk, demanding not just technical prowess from the riders but also nerves of steel.

Speed is the essence of Tourist Trophy races. The fastest riders average more than 136mph (218km/h) over a single lap, with top speeds exceeding 200mph (321km/h) along some straights.

Even shooting the TT is on another level. Take this shot from the approach to Hillberry, located on the 36th mile of the circuit. The spectator-filled grass bank exists just metres from where riders blitz past at upwards of 170mph (270km/h), kicking up dust and grass and leaving a body-shaking wake of wind and noise. It’s intoxicating.

There are no barriers or massive catch fencing here, not even safety tape. Common sense rules apply. Want to have a race bike pass by at full noise within a metre or two of your face? Hillberry is the place for you.

This year’s TT had its challenges, inclement weather being the biggest. For all the joy of sitting on a bank watching the racing, it’s less fun when delay after delay halts the action. On a few occasions, the rain caused races to be cancelled outright. As frustrating as that was, it is understandable as rider safety is paramount, and the TT course is challenging enough in the best of conditions.

Even with all the disruption the weather threw at the organisers, nine of the 10 scheduled races were completed, although some at revised (shortened) distances.

The bright side of all the weather stoppages was the opportunity to nose around the paddock.

Here, the big teams are based in large tents kitted out with full workshops’ worth of gear.

Further down the field, things get a little more modest, with some riders doubling as the mechanic. Whatever it takes to be here.

Away from the glare of the television cameras and the masses of spectators, crews rushed around their bikes, preparing them for the next race, be it a simple fluids change or an engine rebuild.

The grid area sits right in the heart of the paddock, and as soon as the PA system fired into life, a sense of excitement always filled the air. In the unmistakable voice of Clerk of the Course Gary Thompson MBE: “Attention paddock, attention paddock, this is race control…” Everyone hopes it’s a call that racing is on.

Once the signal is given, riders quickly assemble. The larger teams retreat to their remote grid boxes while competitors further down the field grab space in the open. Bikes fire into life to begin their warm-up sequences; blankets shroud tyres that will soon meet the Mountain Course.

Watching how each rider counted down the minutes was a real eye-opener. Some were relaxed and chatty, while others were focused on the task ahead.

Every rider who pushes their machine under the start line arch knows the risks that lie ahead. Despite the obvious dangers, more and more riders are signing up to compete. While many chase podium glory, for the majority, simply becoming a TT rider is all that matters.

The focus will always be on the winners and big stars, though.

Davey Todd is the new rockstar of road racing. He’s the king of swag with an Aussie-style mullet and a beaming smile that excludes a no-fear attitude to lapping the Mountain Course. Having moved to the Milwaukee BMW team this year, things have clicked for him.

The opening, and sadly only, Super Stock race went Davey’s way, however, the crowning glory was his win in the Senior TT – the blue-riband finale to this year’s Tourist Trophy.

Just over an hour earlier, my local star Mike Browne claimed a TT podium by finishing third in the Super Twin race, making it onto the rostrum for the second year straight. When I covered a season of  Irish road racing in 2019 , I marked Mike as a star in the making. To be there and see him claim another TT podium was special.

Local brothers Ryan and Calum Crowe took out both Sidecar races. Meanwhile, Peter Hickman had a lucky win in the Superbike opener.

The greatest of all time – ‘G.O.A.T.’ is an acronym often thrown about, sometimes resulting in passionate debate. Here, there is none: Michael Dunlop is the greatest road racer of all time, and this year he rewrote the Tourist Trophy record books.

Arriving on the Isle of Man just one win short of his legendary uncle Joey Dunlop’s record for most TT victories, it only took the opening Supersport race for Michael to equal the tally. A few days later he eclipsed it after winning the first Super Twin race.

Many thought Joey’s tally of 26 wins, having stood since 2000, may never be beaten, so it seemed fitting that it would be the final member of the legendary Dunlop dynasty who would ultimately break the record.

Although a loose helmet visor likely denied Michael the Superbike victory, and a clutch issue prematurely ended his TT Senior chances, more first-place finishes in the second Supersport and Super Twin races of the 2024 event ultimately took his race win tally to 29 – an astonishing feat for the quiet Ballymoney star.

While others celebrated victory with sponsors and friends, with Michael it was nearly always the same routine. Head down, shorts on, and straight into prep for the next race.

For me, the TT is the world’s greatest motorsport event. For two weeks each year, a nation stops, schools close, and public holidays are declared ahead of professional and amateur racers alike attacking the high streets and open roads of the island at wide-open throttle.

It’s impossible not to love the brilliance of it, accept the risks involved, and leave feeling energised knowing that everyone you meet, be they racers, marshals or spectators, is there living their passion. It’s both mad and brilliant. If you haven’t witnessed the Isle of Man TT in person, you really are missing out.

Isle of Man will never EVER fail to impress me with the quality of the participants. It's a wonder how their riding suits could cover their huge cojones so well.

I would absolutely love to attend the Isle of Man TT as it is such an amazing, and unique event that regardless of whether I like motorcycle racing, I MUST acknowledge that it is the apex of moto racing. Cian, your photos are stunning. ESPECIALLY the panning shots at the corners! All I feel is motion when I look at them.

Hi David, The Senior TT is the blue riband race, with £25,000 going to the winner from an overall pot of £84,500. The Superbike TT is next best, with £20,000 for the winner, followed by the Supersport (£10,000 to the winner), Sidecar and Superstock (both £8,000) and finally the Supertwin (£6,000). While it may sound big, don't forget that competitors compete in multiple classes, meaning building and running numerous machines. Michael Dunlop had 6 bikes at the TT this year (2x Honda Superbikes, a Honda Superstock, Triumph Daytona 765 Supersport, a Yamaha R6 Supersport and the Paton for the Supertwin)

Cian, this is definitely some of your best work my friend. The jump shots are so clear, it's crazy. Glad everything went great and you made it back home. From what you told me when Sasha and I were with you in 2022, there are a lot of risks for spectactors and photographer, too. Have a good one, Cian.

Official 2024 Practice & Qualifying Schedule

The official qualifying and race week TT dates and times have now been released.

The three Pre-TT Southern 100 race days have also been officially announced (more on those at the bottom of this page).

Day 1 Practice & Qualifying: Monday 27th May 2024

Day 2 qualifying: tuesday 28th may 2024, day 3 qualifying: wednesday 29th may 2024, day 4 qualifying: thursday 30th may 2024, day 5 qualifying: friday 31st may 2024, official 2024 race schedule.

The dates and times of the races have now been released.

You may need to look at the below schedule sideways if using a mobile because of all the information.

Day 1 Racing: Saturday 1st June 2024

Day 2 racing: sunday 2nd june 2024, monday 3rd june 2024, day 3 racing: tuesday 4th june 2024, day 4 racing: wednesday 5th june 2024, thursday 6th june 2024, day 5 racing: friday 7th june 2024 (bank holiday), day 6 racing: saturday 8th june 2024.

Although these dates are official, they will be subject to change at short notice due to external elements such as the weather.

Two choices - you can either book the Steam Packet ferry or fly.

When can I Book a Ferry?

There is always huge demand for the ferries and if this is your travel choice then you need to book this as soon as they are available. This is particularly so for the main race week.

When will the 2024 Ferry Tickets be Available?

The 2024 tickets went on sale on Monday 22 May 2023 at 0830 hours local time. More information is available here

Flights are normally much easier to book and direct flights are generally available from:

• Belfast (City & International)
• London City, Gatwick, Heathrow & Luton

What about Transport from the Airport?

Public transport or a taxi are your main options.

The airport has its own page devoted to this.

If you plan to use a bus then take a look at this website which shows the location of all the buses on the island and is updated every 10 seconds. You can see where your bus is.

Accommodation

With over 45,000 people flocking to the island for the TT, accommodation becomes tricky and potentially very expensive. Hotels and B&Bs are always in very short supply (often booked a year in advance).

A significant alternative is camping if you want to bring your own gear and there are a number of campsites available.

Also available, and becoming much more popular, is pre-erected camping and glamping where companies provide everything for you.

There's actually racing other than on the TT Circuit.

There are also the Southern 100 Races immediately before and one possibly after the TT.

The races will take place on the three days just prior to the TT qualifying starting.

There may also be a race on the day after the Senior TT race.

Welcome to the official Isle of Man TT booking site for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company ferry. 

Tt 2025 deposit bookings.

Deposit Bookings for TT 2025 will be available to book from 8.30am on Monday 20th May 2024. You can learn how to book your provisional ferry crossing for the event on this page.   Please read all of this information before proceeding with your provisional deposit-only booking. Once you have read this information you will be able to book from our homepage. We release provisional sailing details and take deposit only bookings for the following year’s TT races so we are able to gauge demand and so you are able to secure your place.

The TT Deposit Booking Scheme is designed to assist genuine TT fans by holding space on our sailings 12 months in advance.  A deposit of £80/€96 for any vehicle type and £40/€48 for a foot passenger will be charged at the time of booking. The deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable.  You will be notified of your total fare by the end of January in the year of travel. You should contact us if you have not received your final booking confirmation by mid-February.

As a guide 2025 standard fares will be based on 2024 published standard fares + Inflation plus the cost of any fuel surcharge increases. BOOK NOW

If payment is not received, then your booking will be cancelled and you will lose your non-refundable and non-transferable deposit. WHEN MAKING YOUR TT BOOKING:

Please ensure that if booking a vehicle that the dimensions you provide are accurate, vehicle dimensions include any attachments which alter the size of the vehicle such as trailers, roof boxes, luggage on roof racks, antennae, aerials and bike carriers, etc. Vans cannot be booked online, please contact our Reservations Team with vehicle dimensions. If ‘Motorcycle’ is selected from the dropdown under ‘Vehicle/Passenger’ you will be given the option to book a number of vehicles (motorcycles) by selecting a number up to a maximum of 8. This will be limited to the number of Adult Passengers you have selected.

Please then follow the booking process. During the booking process you can add extras to your trip. As the TT period will be busy you may want to reserve seats in advance in the Niarbyl Lounge or treat yourself to an upgrade in one of premium lounges. Please note that some of these facilities may not be available once your booking is confirmed. If this is the case you will be refunded in full for any extras we cannot provide. As with all bookings, we ask for the below information for every passenger to adhere to maritime legislation:

During the booking process you will be given the option to ‘Log In’ or ‘Register’.  If you have not already registered with us we strongly recommend that you do  as this will enable you to log in and pay your remaining balance online. Once you have registered you will be sent an email and once you have clicked on the link to activate your account your TT Deposit Booking will be linked to your account and can be reviewed when you are logged in. Once you have finished the booking process you will be emailed confirmation of your non-refundable and non-transferable Deposit booking. Confirmed dates for the isle of man 2025 are monday 26 may to saturday 07 june.

The IoM TT usually runs over two weeks, the last week of May to the first week of June every year.

 The first week will be practice and qualifying for all classes and riders, the second, race week.

Race week will be 31 May to the 7 June 2025. The final day is historically the 6 lap Senior Race for the Marquis de Mouzilly St. Mars trophy.

The IoM TT is due to start soon, see above, so here is the PistonClick guide to what you can expect to see if you are going in 2024, what is racing and a few top tips.

Established in 1907, the Isle of Man TT (originally Tourist Trophy – a test for “touring” motorcycles) runs on the unique 37.73 mile Mountain Course. The course consists of public roads specially closed for the event. The TT is always held in the last week of May and the first week of June.

Qualifying starts on the 27th May 2024 with the first race day on the first Saturday of June the 1st. Six Race days are scheduled for the race week with rest days on Monday the 3rd and Thursday the 6th June.

IoM TT Places to visit - Paddock

Location: TT Grandstand, Glencrutchery Road, Douglas, Isle of Man, IM2 6DA

Entrance is free and loads of official parking.

Your first port of call when Im visiting the IoM TT races is the paddock (Noble's Park) this is where all of the racers are located, the start finish line, the main grandstand with a capacity of 1,050 spectators and the score board. There are loads of food and drink outlets and well as official TT and biking gear, get your camera ready as this is the best place for those selfies with the stars.

During qualifying week the racers won't be out on the course until the early evening so arriving in the morning to watch the bikes being prepared is well worth your time.

Where to watch the TT races

Most parts of the TT circuit allows spectators to watch the racing free of charge, if you are driving or riding you can usually find parking close by on the course, usually in a field for a small fee. The locals will help you out as well, some will let you stand in their front gardens and at Kirk Michael, a fast part of the course you can rent a chair for the session from the Women’s Institute.

As the course is over 37 miles long there are loads of great locations and regular visitors will have a favourite, my advice if you are new to the TT is chat to the regular fans and find out where they are going. Your location depends on what you want to see, bikes flying past at 200mph or banked over in the corners. Just make sure you get to where you want to be before the roads close! 

As you would expect there are a lot of areas you can not watch the racing from on the course as it would be dangerous, a full list can be downloaded here . Just follow the guidance of the Marshall's and remember when you are in place and the roads are closed you are not permitted to cross the road, you will be fined but more importantly you are putting your self and the riders in danger of death! 

Probably the easiest place to get to outside of the capital with plenty of room to spectate and facilities with a cafe and toilets, is the Bungalow. No transport no problem, the electric tram which you can catch in Douglas will take you right up to the track.

With a bridge to cross the road you can view from either side and visit Joey Dunlop’s memorial next to the cafe, and there is plenty of free parking for bikes and cars if you want to make your own way there.

What's racing - Superbike

Standard production models  - 1000cc engines 200bhp.

In general the bikes must maintain the same profile as their road going counterparts, with the same overall appearance as seen from the front, rear and sides.

Teams are allowed to improve the performance of the standard bike however with the rules allowing for various levels of engine tuning and aftermarket chassis improvements.

Number Boards - White backgrounds with black numbers

The Supersport class features machines that are lighter and less powerful than the Superbike and sees a mix of 600cc four-cylinder and 675cc three-cylinder sports based motorcycles.

The machines are allowed to be extensively modified over the production machines and can generate as much as 130bhp and require a high corner speed riding style by the competitors.

1000cc production sports motorcycles and the technical regulations are restricted to keep the machines close to the bikes you can buy in the showroom today.

Limited modifications are permitted for safety reasons but the engine, frame, and electronics remain as standard.

Considered the ultimate proving ground for the production machines, the Superstock class is one that is very important for motorcycle manufacturers.

Twin-cylinder 700cc machines derived from middleweight road going motorcycles turned into racing machines by tuners and engineers with extensive performance adaptations for the challenges of the TT Mountain Course.

The Supertwin machines are the newest addition at the TT, with the best machines making around 90bhp.

This class of racing requires pinpoint accuracy for a fast lap.

If you are looking at traveling to the TT next year by you have two options Fly in or if you are brining your own transport you will need to use the ferry. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company sails from Liverpool and Heysham in England and Dublin and Belfast in Ireland.

I would recommend booking the ferry early, a lot of the TT visitors will book on the island when they are at the TT for the following year. A small deposit is required with the full amount being paid in February this is when the unpaid deposit bookings will go on resale so you could get a second chance. Bookings (deposits only) for 2024 are sale on now. 

Accommodation - Updated February 2024

If you want to be at the center of the action and don’t have wheels Douglas is the place to be. The capital of the Isle of Man and is the home of the TT Grandstand, Start line and Paddock. Most hotels are located in Douglas but rooms tend to expensive and book up quickly.

Homestay is a cheaper alternative to a hotel room, locals will open up their homes for the TT. Homestay can range from just a room, BnB or a whole house, it's like Air BnB but for the Isle of Mann. Island-based MiQuando used to run the scheme but didn't put in a tender for 2024. Homestay IOM Limited have been awarded the contract for three year with the site now live and taking bookings.

There are loads of campsites ranging from basic to glamping which is an option if you don’t want to bring loads of camping gear on your motorcycle. The main camp sites are generally located close to the course and have the usual amenities, showers, power hookups and some have a club house where you can charge your phone.

Healthcare in The Isle of Man

The Isle of Man and the UK have a reciprocal agreement in place where Isle of Man residents visiting the UK, and UK residents visiting the Isle of Man have the assurance of receiving free emergency healthcare.

Although treatment is free, repatriation (return travel to someone's home country) has never been included as part of the reciprocal agreement, and this remains the case today.

Because of this, all UK residents who travel to the Isle of Man (including on business) should ensure that they have adequate insurance in place in the event of repatriation being required, as this can be a considerable expense ranging from the cost of a ferry ticket, to the hire of a private Air Ambulance which can cost as much as £20,000.

Mobile Roaming costs in The Isle of Man

Some mobile operators will not charge you for using data or making a call in the IoM others will. I would recommend you check with your provider as costs can get quite high if the IoM in not included in your plan. Example costs from Virgin in 2023 are 30p per minute for calls and 50p per megabyte for data.

Sure a Jersey, Guernsey and IoM telecom compony will sell you a pre-paid sim card with unlimited text, £10 of phone calls and data. I found this to be more than enough for 10 days on the Island and Im a heavy data user. They also had offers of unlimited data if you download their app and spend £5 online.

Obviously you will get a new telephone number but all of your social media, WhatsApp and the like will be unaffected. Sure have shops in Douglas and were located in the information centre at the back of the grandstand in 2023. 

Transport on The Isle of Man

Taxis can be found in the majority of the main towns and villages in the Island.

Or if you’d rather explore on your own accord, there’s an extensive bus network -  Bus Vannin  – that serves the whole Island on a regular basis including  Ronaldsway Airport  and the  Sea Terminal  in Douglas.

The best way to get around the Isle of Man is to purchase a  Go Explore card  which allows you to travel seamlessly across all Isle of Man Transport scheduled bus and rail services.

Go Explore card holders can experience unlimited travel on scheduled services of the Steam Railway, Manx Electric Railway, Snaefell Mountain Railway, Douglas Horse Trams and buses.

You can get a Go Explore card online or in person from the Welcome Centre in Douglas Sea Terminal, the airport information desk, main stations and the House of Manannan in Peel.

‘Tourist Trophy’, the feature-length documentary film covering the 2022 Isle of Man TT Races, is out now and available to stream for FREE on TT+

Directed by accomplished documentary maker, Adam Kaleta, the film is an authentic, true-to-life portrayal of the 2022 TT Races, following several of the event’s leading competitors as they navigate the highs and lows of racing on the Mountain Course.

The film follows several of the leading protagonists who competed at the 2022 event and allows us to better rationalise the TT mind-set through the authentic portrayal of each rider’s TT story.

There’s the determination of Mike Russell as he strives to compete in every race; the highly-anticipated newcomer, Glenn Irwin, who finds his meticulous preparation is challenged by the two-week emotional rollercoaster; and his legendary team-mate, John McGuinness MBE, whose 100th TT race start leads to some searching questions for the 50-year-old. We also follow the journey of the record-breaking sidecar constructors, Tom and Ben Birchall, while no film about today’s TT would be complete without Peter Hickman, the fastest rider ever around the TT Mountain Course – and arguably the man of the moment.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race today: Alappuzha reverberates with ‘vallamkali’ vibe; know details

Seventy-four boats will compete across nine categories today, vying for supremacy on the exhilarating waters of Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, from 11 am as the 70th Nehru Trophy Boat Race finally becomes a reality. The event will be inaugurated by Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas at 2 pm, though the heats will begin at 11 am. With just a few hours left for the regatta, the district is already decked up and reverberates with the ‘vallamkali’ rhythms. Here’s what you should know on the day: The order of events The heats will begin at 11 a.m. with the smaller boats, such as the vepp A grade, iruttukuthi C grade, and iruttukuthi B grade, followed by the chundan, aka snakeboats. The churulan, iruttukuthi A grade, vepp B grade, thekkanodi kettu, and thekkanodi thara will only have final rounds.

Starting and finishing points The starting point of the event is a boat jetty named  Punnamada starting point. The finishing point is where the seating arrangements are set up. There is also an LED Display Wall at the finishing point for the audience to know exact finishing time of the boats, with clarity. Traffic restrictions The restrictions are on from 9 am today. No parking will be allowed from 6 am onwards at the roadside, in the stretch between the General Hospital junction (south side)  to Kaichoondi Junction and Kommadi Junction. Between 7 am and 7 pm, vehicles won’t be allowed between the south side junction of the district court to the Thathampilly Kaayal Kurisadi Junction. Only KSRTC will be allowed between YMCA Junction and the Fire and Safety Office area. Those coming via the Thanneermukkam Road to watch the event should park their vehicles at the SDV School Ground. Those reaching from the Ernakulam side via the National Highway should also do the same, taking the Kommadi - Savakottappalam - Vadakke Junction route. Those coming from Changanassery side should park at the Carmel School ground.

26 buses to serve spectators Around 26 buses will be available from the KSRTC depot of Alappuzha for spectators heading to Ernakulam, Changanassery, Kayamkulam, Kottayam, Chengannur, and Kottarakkara. If required, extra services will also be in place, said KSRTC. The Alappuzha depot will also provide ticket facilities for those who want to book boat race tickets.
