Cheap Travel with the Junior Card on Swiss Trains, Buses & Boats

Families with children aged 6 to 16 save big with the Swiss Junior Card or the Children’s Co-Travelcard that allows free travel on almost all trains, buses, trams, boats, and cable cars in Switzerland.

Family Wagon on a Swiss TrainFamilies with children aged 6 to 16 save big with the Swiss Junior Card or the Children’s Co-Travelcard that allows free travel on almost all trains, buses, trams, boats, and cable cars in Switzerland.

The Junior Travel Card (Junior-Karte / Carte Junior) is a fantastic savings offer for children traveling with parents on trains, buses, trams, boats, and cable cars in Switzerland. It cost only CHF30 per year! The Children’s Co-travelcard is a similar travel deal allowing a child to travel for free with any registered adult. The Grandchild travel card is no longer sold. The Junior Card is mostly associated with Swiss Railways (CFF / SBB) but is valid on almost all forms of public transportation in Switzerland including most municipal buses and trams with savings particularly big on cable cars and mountain railways.

The Junior Card and Children’s Co-travelcard are valid wherever the Half-Fare card is accepted – PDF map . Both cards are available to non-residents as well but note that the Junior Card is included for free on most international Swiss travel cards available to non-resident visitors only. The Junior Card is then referred to as the Swiss Family Card .

Save with the Junior and Children’s Co Travel Cards on Swiss Transportation Costs

The Junior Card is one of the best bargains and biggest savings deals for families traveling in Switzerland. It allows children aged 6 to 16 unlimited travel on most forms of public transportation in Switzerland, as long as they travel with a parent (with a valid ticket) named on the Junior Card.

The Children’s Co-travelcard (Kinder-Mitfahrtkarte / Carte Enfant Accompagné) is similar in scope but available for a child traveling with any registered adult. Each child-adult combination requires a separate card but there is no limit on the number of combinations. This card replaced the previous Grandchild Card that is no longer sold.

The Junior Card costs CHF30 and is valid for a year. Large families receive the third and further Junior Cards for free when buying the cards at the same time. Each Children’s Co-travelcard is also CHF30 per year.

The Junior Card is a fantastic bargain that pays for itself very quickly – a return ticket for a child from Geneva Airport to Montreux is for example CHF36. The Junior Card is also valid on all buses and trams in Geneva and Lausanne and on lake boats cruising on Lac Léman.

Note: at some cable cars, free travel is only granted if the travelers arrive on public transportation.

Buying the Junior Card for Family Savings on Swiss Railways

In contrast to previous practice, the Junior Travel Card is no longer a paper card but is added to the child’s Swiss Pass — a plastic credit card size card. The Swiss Pass itself is free but requires a visit with passports, proof of family relationship, and a recent photo to a Swiss railway station. The actual card is then mailed and only available ten days later in Switzerland (probably longer to foreign addresses). For children, it is not possible to obtain the Swiss Pass online, or in advance of travel to Switzerland.

→ See  How to Get and Use the Swiss Pass Card  for more details.

A temporary travel pass is usually available that may be used for up to two weeks. For foreign tourists, a 30-day paper Junior Travelcard is sold at the same CHF30 cost (still a bargain), or a free Swiss Family Card may be issued in addition to most other international travel offers such as the Swiss Travel Pass.

From 2022, the Junior Travelcard and Children’s Co-Travel cards are added to the child’s Swiss Pass — no separate pass is issued to the parents (or added to the adult Swiss Pass). If the registered adult has a Swiss Pass (plastic card of mobile app), the child’s pass may also be controlled by inspectors via the adult card.

The adult must be in possession of a valid ticket (and the Junior Card must be shown to ticket inspectors) or expect a double fine.

Family-Travel on Swiss Public Transportation

Children aged 6 to 16 traveling without a Junior Card generally pay half the adult fare – select the ½ button on vending machines. Bearers of Swiss Half-Fare Cards may buy cheap day tickets when traveling with children without Junior Tickets but in many cases buying a Children’s Co-travelcard will be cheaper.

Some double-decker Inter-City trains have special play areas for children on the second level of the first or last carriage of the train. (The lower level on these carriages provides probably the worst seats on any train in Switzerland.)

Youths between 16 and 25 may buy the Seven25 ticket that offers unlimited travel between 7 pm and 5 am.

Arnold Man And Former Department Of Defense Deputy Chief Pleads Guilty To Conspiracy To Engage In Dogfighting And Interstate Travel In Aid Of Racketeering

Baltimore , Maryland – Frederick Douglass Moorefield, Jr., age 63, of Arnold, Maryland, pleaded guilty today to federal charges of conspiracy to engage in animal fighting, specifically the fighting of dogs, and interstate travel in aid of racketeering.

The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron; Special Agent in Charge David Geist of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Washington Field Office- Criminal and Cyber Division; Special Agent in Charge Charmeka Parker of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General; Special Agent in Charge Christopher Dillard of the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General; Defense Criminal Investigative Service – Mid-Atlantic Field Office; U.S. Marshal for Maryland Clinton Fuchs; and Anne Arundel County Police Chief Amal E. Awad.

According to the guilty plea, federal agents began investigating Moorefield’s connections to dogfighting after officers from Anne Arundel County Animal Control responded to a report of two dead dogs found in a plastic dog food bag in Annapolis, Maryland in November 2018.  Investigators found mail addressed to Moorefield inside the bag, and a necropsy determined that the dogs bore wounds and scarring patterns consistent with their having been used in dogfighting.

Moorefield was affiliated with a dogfighting enterprise known as the “DMV Board,” which operated in and around Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.  Numerous other members of the DMV Board have been convicted on dogfighting charges in the Eastern District of Virginia.  Moorefield operated under the kennel name “Geehad Kennels” and used his home in Arnold, Maryland to keep, train, and breed dogs for dogfighting for over 20 years.

A review of Moorefield’s phone and iCloud account showed numerous message exchanges regarding dogfighting with other members of the DMV Board.  In addition to arranging fights and wagers, Moorefield and other members of the DMV Board discussed the breeding and training of fighting dogs, procuring supplies for the maintenance and feeding of fighting dogs, and criminal investigations and prosecutions of dogfighters.  In some exchanges, Moorefield and others discussed the indictments of DMV Board members and speculated about the identity of a “snitch” in the group.

Moorefield’s messages also contained several exchanges arranging—or “hooking”—dogfights.  In these conversations, Moorefield would “call out a weight” by identifying the weight and sex of the dog he wanted to sponsor in a fight.  Other dogfighters would then propose a fight against their own dogs or match Moorefield with another of their contacts who had a dog in the same weight class.  The dogfighters would then agree on wagers and set a date for the fight, usually six to eight weeks after the match was made.  In addition to stating the amount to be paid to the winner of the fight, dogfighters agreed on forfeit—or “fit”—payments to be made in the event that a dogfighter backed out of the fight before it was scheduled to take place.

After hooking a fight, Moorefield trained his dogs in a process known as a “keep.”  Moorefield’s typical keep schedule for a dog involved physical training (using treadmills, weighted collars, and other accessories), a diet plan, and the use of steroids.  Moorefield obtained steroids and other veterinary drugs through various contacts in his dogfighting network, not through legitimate veterinary prescriptions.

When Moorefield sponsored a dog in a fight, the fight ended only when a dog died or when the owner forfeited the match—either through the dog “quitting” the fight or the owner “picking up” the dog.  In the event that one of Moorefield’s dogs lost a fight but did not die, Moorefield killed that dog.  One method of killing employed by Moorefield involved the use of a device consisting of jumper cables connected directly to an ordinary plug.  Moorefield plugged the device into a wall socket and attached the cables to the dog, electrocuting it.

Between January 2019 and October 2023, Moorefield sent and received monetary payments through CashApp related to his participation in dogfighting.  In some instances, transactions were given misleading labels in order to disguise the true nature of the transferred money, such as a transaction in which Moorefield received $1,000 labeled as a “housewarming gift” from a known dogfighter in 2022, even though Moorefield has lived at the same address for over two decades.

When agents searched Moorefield’s residence on September 6, 2023, they recovered five pitbull-type dogs from large metal cages in a windowless room of Moorefield’s basement.  Agents also found several containers of animal medication, dog food, and protein powder in the same room, as well as the jumper-cable device referenced above, which Moorefield used to kill dogs that were no longer fit for use in dogfighting.  Agents seized a large piece of folded-up carpet from a shed on the property, and this carpet appeared to be stained in several places with blood.  Moorefield used the carpet as the floor of an arena to stage dogfights or “rolls” (brief test fights between dogs to evaluate the dogs’ fighting ability).

When interviewed by agents, Moorefield stated that he had only recently obtained—within the past week—four of the five dogs found on the property.  The dog that Moorefield did not obtain recently was diagnosed as exhibiting calloused skin and an old injury, in addition to being infested with fleas.  That dog had to be humanely euthanized after exhibiting extreme aggression toward both human caretakers and other dogs.  Moorefield bred and/or trained all five dogs recovered from his property for the purposes of sponsoring them in dogfights.

At the time Moorefield was charged in this case, he was the Deputy Chief Information Officer for Command, Control, and Communications for the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Moorefield faces a maximum of five years in prison for conspiring to engage in an animal fighting conspiracy.  U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett has scheduled sentencing for December 2, 2024 at 2:30 p.m.

United States Attorney Erek L. Barron commended the FBI, the United States Department of Agriculture – Office of the Inspector General, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Anne Arundel County Police Department, Anne Arundel County Animal Control, and thanked the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia for their valuable assistance in the investigation.  Mr. Barron thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alexander Levin and Darryl Tarver, who are prosecuting the federal case.

Help with the Children’s Co-Travelcard.

Do you want to know how the Children’s Co-Travelcard on the SwissPass works? How can you buy it? And what happens during ticket inspection? Find answers to these and many other questions.

What is the Children’s Co-Travelcard?

The Children’s Co-Travelcard allows children aged at least 6 and under 16 to travel for free for a whole year throughout Switzerland when accompanied by a person aged 16 or over.

  • The companion must hold a valid ticket for 2nd or 1st class (e.g. a ticket, GA Travelcard, Point-to-Point Travelcard); the child can travel in either class for free.
  • The Children’s Co-Travelcard is issued on the SwissPass.
  • A companion can take a maximum of four children with them. Each child must have their own Children’s Co-Travelcard.

Where is the Children’s Co-Travelcard valid?

The Children’s Co-Travelcard has the same area of validity as the Half Fare Travelcard.

What about grandma and grandpa? Does a child then need two Children’s Co-Travelcards?

If a child travels together with their grandma or together with their grandpa, a separate Children’s Co-Travelcard is required for both their grandma and for their grandpa.

If a child travels with their grandma and their grandpa also comes along, then only one Children’s Co-Travelcard is required (for grandma and child).

The Children’s Co-Travelcard is always valid for the child and the stated companion.

For what age and how long is the Children’s Co-Travelcard valid?

The Children’s Co-Travelcard is valid for children aged 6 or over and under 16 for one year or until the day before their 16th birthday (at the latest).

How many children with a Co-Travelcard can a companion take with them?

  • A companion can take a maximum of four children with them. Each child must have a valid Children’s Co-Travelcard.
  • If you are travelling with more than four children (for example, on a school trip, for a child’s birthday, as part of a club, in a group, as a company or institution etc.), all children aged 6 or over must hold their own ticket.
  • For groups (of children) of 10 or more passengers, you can purchase group tickets.
  • Splitting up the group is not permitted, for example, travelling as several companions with four children each with a Children’s Co-Travelcard.

More about group tickets Help with group tickets

Can a child travel with the Children’s Co-Travelcard without being accompanied by an adult?

No. The Children’s Co-Travelcard is only valid for travel with a companion (aged 16 or over). The companion must have a valid ticket for 1st or 2nd class.

Will the child receive their own SwissPass card?

Yes. Every child who holds a public transport travelcard (e.g. Junior Travelcard, Children’s Co-Travelcard, Regional Travelcard) on the SwissPass has their own SwissPass card. All public transport travelcards are then stored on this card.

Why does the child receive their own SwissPass card?

  • The Children’s Co-Travelcard is a personal travelcard and is therefore only stored on the child’s own personal SwissPass.
  • Other travelcards: as the child grows older, it is increasingly likely that they will purchase other personal travelcards for travelling independently. A large number of children under 16 already have their own SwissPass card.
  • Additional advantages: the child will also be able to enjoy other advantages. For example, partner services such as ski passes or admission tickets that are deposited on the SwissPass card.
  • Sustainability: the card can be used for five years and can hold numerous different offers. This means that a new plastic card doesn’t need to be produced every year.

Who is the travelcard holder for the Children’s Co-Travelcard?

The holder of the travelcard is always the child.

Do I receive two copies of the Children’s Co-Travelcard on the SwissPass?

No. Each child receives their own SwissPass card.

The Junior Travelcard/Children’s Co-Travelcard can be checked both on the child’s personal SwissPass card/SwissPass Mobile and on the SwissPass card/SwissPass Mobile of the accompanying parent or companion. It is therefore enough simply to present the SwissPass/SwissPass Mobile belonging to the accompanying parent or companion when the Junior Travelcard/Children’s Co-Travelcard is checked.

To ensure ticket inspection is possible via the app, the child and/or the accompanying companion must have a SwissPass login and have linked it to the app. You will find instructions on how to do this on the general questions on logins page.

Important: Only the Junior Travelcard/Children’s Co-Travelcard can be checked via the SwissPass/SwissPass Mobile of the accompanying parent or companion. All other travelcards can still only be checked via the child’s personal SwissPass.

Can I buy a second SwissPass card?

No. Each person can hold only one active SwissPass card.

If for example the child loses their SwissPass card and a replacement SwissPass card was therefore issued, the first card is blocked and can no longer be used. That is how we prevent misuse of the first card.

Is the Children’s Co-Travelcard of the child linked to the SwissPass of their companion?

Yes. The Children’s Co-Travelcard is linked to the companion’s SwissPass. The child remains the holder of the travelcard.

What do I do if I don’t want the SwissPass card for my child?

The Children’s Co-Travelcard is now only available on the SwissPass. The standard range is available if you travel with children without the Children’s Co-Travelcard – for example, the Day Pass Children for CHF 19 (2nd class) or CHF 33 (1st class). The Day Pass Children is valid across the GA Travelcard area of validity.

Purchasing the travelcard for the first time at a staffed point of sale.

Please bring a recent analogue or digital passport photo to the counter.

Online renewal of a Children’s Co-Travelcard.

If the child already holds a SwissPass, the same photo will be used. Children and young people aged at least 6 and under 25 only need a new photo if the current photo was taken more than five years ago.

What do I need to do if I want to change the child’s photo on the SwissPass?

If you would like to change the child’s photo for the SwissPass before the end of the five-year period, please bring a recent (analogue or digital) passport photo to a public transport point of sale. You – or your child – will then receive a new SwissPass card with the new photo. This costs CHF 30.

What documents do I need to purchase the Children’s Co-Travelcard for the first time on the SwissPass?

For the initial purchase of a Children’s Co-Travelcard, please bring a valid official ID for both the child and the companion.

Does the child need their own login for swisspass.ch?

No. If you always just show the SwissPass card, a separate login is not needed. The child only needs a login if they want to show the Junior Travelcard in an app (e.g. SBB Mobile).

How can I set up a separate login for swisspass.ch for the child?

If you want to set up a separate customer account for the child, you need a separate e-mail address for the child. If you have your own customer account on swisspass.ch, you cannot use your e-mail address. Every person with a SwissPass needs their own e-mail address. You will find instructions on how to do this on the general questions on logins page.

However, you can give your e-mail address for correspondence so that you receive all the relevant information. Go to ‘Customer data’ on swisspass.ch using the child’s login and untick ‘Use login e-mail as contact address’ under ‘Correspondence’. Enter your email address instead.

Select ‘No’ under ‘Contact channel’ for the SwissPass newsletter so that you do not receive the newsletter twice (if you have a customer account yourself on swisspass.ch and you have entered your e-mail address as the correspondence address for the child).

In the profile on SBB.ch.

Untick the box about receiving information from SBB under ‘Notifications’ so that the SBB newsletter is not sent to your e-mail address twice (if your e-mail address is also given as the correspondence address for the child).

How long does it take for the child to receive the Children’s Co-Travelcard on the SwissPass?

Does your child already have a swisspass card.

The Children’s Co-Travelcard is integrated on the SwissPass from its first day of validity.

Is this your child’s first SwissPass card?

The Children’s Co-Travelcard on the SwissPass will be delivered within around ten days by post. If you need the Children’s Co-Travelcard before then, you can receive a temporary SwissPass from us.

Renewing the Children’s Co-Travelcard on the SwissPass.

The Children’s Co-Travelcard on the SwissPass is valid from the first day of validity.

Ticket inspection.

What happens during ticket inspection.

  • During the ticket inspection, either the child presents their own SwissPass card or you as the companion show your SwissPass card. The Children’s Co-Travelcard can be checked on both the child’s and the companion’s SwissPass.
  • The passenger attendant will check whether the right person is travelling with the child. The first names, surnames and photographs of the permitted companions or children are shown to the train crew via the ticket checking device. This information is then checked against the valid official ID or SwissPass presented.
  • You must also show your own ticket or travelcard (separate ticket, GA Travelcard etc.) at the same time.
  • If the child and/or the companion use SwissPass Mobile (e.g. in the SBB Mobile app), the Children’s Co-Travelcard can also be checked on a smartphone.

Can I show the Children’s Co-Travelcard on my smartphone via the SBB Mobile app?

Yes. To display the child’s SwissPass Card via the SwissPass Mobile function (e.g. in the SBB Mobile app), the child needs their own SwissPass login. The Children’s Co-Travelcard can also be inspected via the SwissPass Mobile function of the companion who is travelling with the child (e.g. in the SBB Mobile app). You will find instructions on how to do this on the general questions on logins page.

To ensure ticket inspection is possible via the app, the child and/or the companion must have a SwissPass login and have linked it to the app. You will find instructions on how to do this on the general questions on logins page.

Go to the SwissPass login More info about SwissPass Mobile

Refund and return.

Can i exchange the children’s co-travelcard or have it refunded.

No, exchanges and refunds are not possible for the Children’s Co-Travelcard.

Other questions.

What can i do if i have lost the children’s co-travelcard or forgotten to bring it with me, children’s co-travelcard on the swisspass..

  • Tip: The Children’s Co-Travelcard can also be checked via the SwissPass or SwissPass Mobile of the companion. (e.g. in the SBB Mobile app). To ensure ticket inspection is possible via the app, the accompanying person must have a SwissPass login and have linked it to the app. You will find instructions on how to do this on the general questions on logins page.
  • If your SwissPass card is lost or stolen, you can order a new one. This costs CHF 30.

No. If you always just show the SwissPass card, a separate login is not needed. The child only needs a login if they want to show the Children’s Co-Travelcard in an app (e.g. SBB Mobile).

Ticket for children under 6

Hi, I am travelling to Interlaken from Milan. While trying to buy tickets on SBB app, it does not exclude my 4 years’ old son from the total invoice. I have added my son as co-passenger while booking the tickets. But my recollection from various forum is children below 6 travel free in Switzerland. Could anyone can help in this? Best, Zariab

Seat Reservation for Under 6

I am trying to reserve seats on sbb.ch, but when I add our daughter (who is under 6), the option to make a seat reservation disappears - is this a bug with the website, or am I doing something incorrect? If I ‘adjust’ her age to over 6 then the option to reserve appears… I see that I can make reservations with the app, but the app doesn’t appear to have the functionality to select the type of carriage you wish to book (e.g. family compartment). Thanks

children with Swiss family card from Zermatt to Domodossola

We’ll take train from Zermatt to Domodossola. Our children are with Swiss family card. Can they be free charge till Domodossola? Or, they must buy ticket from Simplontunnel to Domodossola in Italy? Thanks!

Published: 25.06.2024 06:39

Hello Gopoacha25 Link opens in new window. No, they are free. Domodossola is the commercial Swiss/Italian border station; thus the Family Card & Junior Card are valid as far as Domodossola, or Domo, as we locals call it. Kind regards, Roland

Airlines are making it harder to reach elite status, but my travel credit card made it easy

  • As a frequent traveler, I get a lot of value out of reaching elite status with Delta.
  • I found a great way to get the most out of my travel budget by booking my vacation with Delta Vacations.
  • Maximizing my points and miles with my travel credit card means I can travel more.

Insider Today

Loyalty to one airline can pay off in spades. As a Delta frequent flyer, I value the extra special perks I get as I accumulate Delta miles , from upgrades to checked bags to same-day changes. After all, who doesn't love freebies while traveling?

However, it's getting harder to re-earn airline elite status . Late last year, Delta increased the elite status requirements for its popular Medallion program. To give you a quick picture, earning top-tier Diamond status requires spending $28,000 with the airline in a calendar year.

While I fly over 100,000 miles every year, I don't always book flights with Delta, so meeting this goal would be unrealistic for me. Fortunately, I found a way to qualify for elite status easier — and much cheaper. Here's how I did it.

My boyfriend and I love earning rewards while traveling

My boyfriend and I share the same birth week — we're both Virgos. Rather than exchanging gifts, we love experiencing new places together, so we set our sights on visiting Tulum. We wanted to go somewhere we could get away from work and relax, but we're also aviation nerds, so we wanted to fly into Tulum's brand-new airport , which just opened this spring.

While we love to use credit card rewards to offset the costs of our flights and hotels, our stash is low as we recently redeemed points for a trip to New Zealand next year. However, we found an even better way to book our birthday trip: Delta Vacations. Not only did we bundle flights, hotels, airport transfers, and activities for one price, but we earned a ton of elite status points and SkyMiles.

We get great rewards by booking a vacation with Delta Vacations

There are four levels of Delta Medallion elite status, requiring anywhere from $5,000 Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQD) for Silver status to $28,000 MQD for Diamond status. You can earn $1 MQD per $1 spent on Delta flights, but you can earn more with a Delta credit card .

I already have airport lounge access with The Platinum Card® from American Express , which includes same-day Delta Sky Club access , so I opted not to apply for the more premium Delta Reserve card .

Instead, I recently applied for the mid-tier Delta Platinum card with a $350 annual fee. You can earn MQDs by spending on the card, but at a measly $1 MQD per $20 rate, so I don't count on that to rack up elite status quickly.

I've had Delta Platinum status for three years, and I plan on qualifying again for 2025. My favorite benefit is easily the regional upgrade certificates, which I used to upgrade my family's flight from New York to Hawaii to lie-flat seats.

I discovered that you can also earn $1 MQD per dollar spent on Delta Vacations packages. Earning elite status points at that rate on the whole travel package — not just the flights — is a major win.

What I earned

Our Delta Vacations package includes two round-trip tickets to Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport (TQO) in Tulum, airport transfers, four nights at a luxury all-inclusive resort, and even an action-packed ATV adventure tour around the Yucatan Peninsula that we're looking forward to when we're not relaxing by the beach. In total, my partner and I spent around $7,500 on the trip.

I paid for the package with the Delta Platinum card, which offers a 50,000-mile welcome offer after spending $3,000 in the first six months. By paying for it with my card, I easily cleared the minimum spend requirement for the bonus. Not only that, but all Delta purchases on the card also accrue 3x miles, so I racked up an additional 22,000 SkyMiles from this single expense.

This was my first time booking a vacation package, and I was surprised that it was not only seamless to put my trip together online but that I could earn a ton of rewards along the way. We're over halfway through the elite qualification year, and I've scored 6,000 MQDs and over 70,000 SkyMiles from this one purchase.

Combined with my everyday card spending and the rest of my flights I've got for this year, I've already secured Delta Platinum status for 2025.
