Best Time To Travel To Belize

The best time to visit Belize may depend on what you want to do. For example if you are an avid SCUBA diver , the best time may be when the waters are generally calm and this is in summer which is the off season for tourism. The tourism high season in Belize coincides with the cool and dry seasons – December to April. Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday in November, is when overnight tourists start to travel to Belize.

The Tourism High Season

There are a few scattered rains in December when cold fronts start to arrive in Belize but this is tempered by the cooler temperatures and is well received by visitors and residents alike. Hotels and tourism resorts have high rack rates during this season as that is when demand is highest. Budget travelers need to take this into account. Traveling to Belize outside the high season can make for lodging discounts of 25% or more. The same applies to airline ticket prices. The single biggest wave of tourists is between December 15 and January 15, and during the weeks around the Easter season in April. Many visitors are fleeing the frost and snow in their home countries at this time and looking to spend their holidays in the tropics.

Tourism lodges charge top dollar during these peak tourism periods. Experts recommend avoiding the high season if you are looking to save money . Some resorts offer discounts in the high season provided that you book well in advance and make a deposit but you need to hunt around for those unadvertised specials

Easter in Belize includes the longest single holiday on the Belize calendar,  four consecutive public and bank holidays starting from Holy Friday and including Easter Monday. The international Cross Country Cycle Race is a highlight of this holiday. The weather tends to be dry and warm at this time and most Belizeans and visitors, including an increasing influx from the elite in Guatemala and El Salvador, make for the beaches and rivers to cool off and enjoy the sun, swimming, fishing and other recreational water sports .

The rainy season runs from June to November when annual Belize rainfall is highest. The early months of May and June when rainfall is just getting underway, are a good time to travel to Belize as you can  escape the tourist rush and hotel rates tend to be lower.

The downside is that some dirt roads get muddy and this may curtail visits to remote areas. When there is heavy rainfall, floods in the south, portions of some public highways are temporarily closed. Some caves, especially those used for cave tubing may not be not safe and are sometimes closed by the authorities during these conditions. While ground travel may be impeded in times of high rainfall, air transportation is readily available throughout the year.

Summer In Belize

Summer is the traditional “low season” for tourism in this country, and some resorts actually close down for a couple of months due to slow business. But Belize can be attractive for those seeking a summer break. During the summer months Belize receives less visitors giving tourists the opportunity to find more privacy in areas such as the beaches, caves and Maya Ruins. High traffic areas such as Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker get crowded to saturation level with locals during vacations such as Easter but outside this time frame you will see less tourists. The upside of the dry weather in summer is that river levels are low and safer for canoe and cave archaeology adventure tours such as the Belize ATM Cave .

Summer is when the local lobster season opens and the country hosts its signature seafood event Belize Lobster Fest .

In the rainy season, rain showers can be heavy so make your vacation plans accordingly. Ambergris Caye and the islands are generally avoided by tourists in the rainy season. Belize’s water temperature ranges between 79 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Recent developments in the tourism transport niche include scheduled  helicopter tours and rentals to the more natural and historic landmarks including the Great Blue Hole .

One of the best features about spending a summer vacation in Belize of course are the summer savings. Rates start falling from around May 1st. and remain relatively low until November.

Best Times To Visit Belize

The best time to visit Belize is from late November to mid-May, during the country's dry season. Although this peak season draws thousands of tourists, dealing with crowds is an easy sacrifice to make for warm temperatures, clear skies and easy access to the country's  top attractions . You'll probably want to pass on visiting during June and July, when humidity mists the tropical landscape and temps reach triple digits. Expect showers from June to mid-November and strong winds. If you want to beat the rush of tourists and don't mind packing an umbrella, come during the rainy season in September and October. But keep in mind that some establishments shut down during the offseason.

Best and Worst Times to Visit Belize

The best times to visit Belize are February through April when rainfall reaches the lowest point of the year. But some months are better than others.

Belize is mainly a cruise destination with more than 600,000 visitors arriving by ship and nearly 300,000 arriving by air for hotel stays every year, according to the Belize Tourism Board .

The main port for cruise arrivals is Belize City. It’s a common stop on some western Caribbean cruises because of the country’s natural attractions and friendly, English-speaking population. It also has one of the best shore excursions in the entire Caribbean: cave tubing down Caves Branch River.

But anyone who goes there should prepare for rain during most months of the year. We went during the “dry season” and watched gigantic black clouds roll over our heads. Luckily, it didn’t rain during our cave tubing shore excusion .

3 Best Times to Visit

Out of any month of the year, one of the best times to visit Belize is March. Cruise and airport arrivals jump because of spring break for families with children and because total rainfall is the second lowest of the year.

March temperatures are comfortably warm with an average high of 85 degrees Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius in Belize City, according to the National Meteorological Service of Belize. The average low is mostly at night at 71 degrees Fahrenheit or about 22 Celsius. Rainfall has averaged about 2.4 inches in March over a 30-year history.

Another best time to go to Belize is April. It is warmer with an average high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit or 31 Celsius. The average low is 74 degrees Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius.

Historically, the total rainfall in April is slightly lower at two inches a month. Despite the better weather, April is less popular than March, January and February, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

The next best month to visit is February. Rainfall is slightly higher at nearly 3 inches and temperatures reach an average of 83 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 68 Fahrenheit during the night.

These three months represent the Belize dry season. Rain is much heavier during the rest of the year.

May is a possible time to visit because of even warmer temperatures. But the risk of rain is higher, especially late in the month.

Worst Time to Visit: Belize Hurricane Season

The Belize hurricane season from June through November is the worst time to visit because the average rainfall jumps to one of the highest levels of any destination in the Caribbean.

The hurricane season in Belize is similar to the one for the entire Caribbean, which begins in June and runs through November. For Belize, this rainy season also goes into December.

Anyone who loves plenty of rain should visit Belize in September, when the average rainfall for the month is more than 11 inches or five times higher than April. As a result, it is no surprise that cruise and airport arrivals reach the lowest point of the year during September.

Not far behind September in total rainfall are June and October with 10 inches apiece. July, August and November also are not far behind with an average eight to nine inches. These months of June through November are the same months as the Caribbean hurricane season.

Other Times to Visit

January and May are transition months between the dry and hurricane seasons. They fall between the two extremes with about four to five inches of rain each month.

But temperatures for those two months are much different with an average high of 82 degrees Fahrenheit in January and 89 in May.

Anyone who likes the beach and ocean swimming—although Belize isn’t known for it—should go in May and not January if they have a choice in when to go. They will have more comfortable conditions in May.

The other reason May is better is that it has slightly lower total rainfall than January.

That leaves December. It is the most popular month to visit Belize for cruise passengers, but it also has higher average rainfall at more than seven inches during the month.

Temperatures are lowest of the year with an average high of 82 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 67.

Average Monthly Weather

The average monthly weather for Belize has temperatures in the low to upper 80s Fahrenheit or the upper 20s to low 30s Celsius. Rainfall ranges from a low point of two inches in March and April to more than 11 inches in September.

January has the coolest weather of the year along with December. The average high temperature is 82 Fahrenheit or about 28 Celsius. Rainfall is moderate for Belize but high for other Caribbean destinations at five inches. Tourism is the second highest of the year.

Rainfall drops to three inches while the average high temperature edges up to 83 Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius. Tourism drops slightly. It’s a better month to visit than January.

Tourism reaches the highest point of the year thanks to spring break. Rainfall reaches the lowest point of the year at two inches. The average high makes a bigger climb to 85 Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius.

Belize weather in April is the best of the year. Like March, it has only two inches of rain historically during the month. But tourism drops—prices may drop as well—and the average highs move up to 87 Fahrenheit or 31 Celsius.

Tourism drops quite a bit in May. Rainfall edges up to four inches. The average high jumps to the highest point of the year to 89 Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius. This is the month to go for people who like it warm and humid. But go early in the month because hurricane season is getting close.

The high-risk weather arrives in June. The average rainfall skyrockets to 10 inches. It’s a good month to go only for people who like a lot of rain.

July weather in Belize is not much different from June. It’s warm, humid and wet. Like June, it averages 10 inches of rain.

August oddly takes a small break from the 10 inches of rain in June and July and the 10 to 11 inches in September and October. It averages only seven inches during the month. But like June and July, visitors should plan on a high risk of rain.

The prize for the worst month of the year goes to September with average rainfall of 11 inches. Temperatures maintain an average high in the upper 80s Fahrenheit that began in April.

Second place for worst month to visit Belize goes to October along with June and July. It also averages 10 inches of rain. The heat starts to ease with an average high of 86 Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius.

Cruise tourism begins to pick up in November as the hurricane season winds down. The average high temperature drops another two degrees. Rainfall historically is seven inches like August and December.

December is the most popular month of the year to visit Belize for cruise visitors. Temperatures drop to the lowest point of the year at 82 Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius. Rainfall at seven inches is higher than the coming dry season months but lower than the rest of the hurricane season.

Belize Weather & Climate

Belize has a comfortable subtropical climate that is suitable for travel year-round. The average yearly temperature is about 80 degrees F with humidity hovering about 85%. The coolest winter temperatures can reach the low 60’s. During the hottest parts of summer, it can reach the mid 90’s on the mainland.

Trade winds blow along the coast, cayes (pronounced keys) and reef most of the year, keeping temperatures pleasant. Rainfall is heaviest in the south and in the lowland jungle areas. It is lightest in the north and on the cayes. Climate can be determined by altitude, with evenings at higher elevations pleasantly cool while the lowland jungle is often muggy and humid. Belize has two distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season typically occurs December through May and the wet season June through November. In the tropics, rain can occur any time of year, but during the dry season rain falls in brief bursts. Some locals recognize a third transition season during the winter. Belize City

Belize Dry Season – High Season for Travel

The Belize dry season occurs from December through May and is high season for travel and cruising. Climate is characterized by warm to hot temperatures, sunny days, cooling trade winds and little rain.

From December through February, strong northerly winds called “nortes” can blow (see norte season below). March and April are idyllic with little rain, pleasant temperatures and calm, clear water. When rain does fall during the dry season, it typically falls in moderate short spurts resulting in a pleasant cooling effect.

During the high season, especially around the Christmas and Easter holidays, prices are higher. Hotels and attractions are more crowded. Belize small ship cruises sell out fast. We recommend booking early if you plan to travel during the dry season in Belize.  

Some Belizeans will recognize a third season, when the rainy season transitions to dry. The norte season occurs from November through February and is characterized by occasional strong northerly winds or “nortes” coming from the U.S. and Mexico. Nortes can bring thick clouds and cool nights, causing some of the lowest temperatures of the year in the low 60’s.

December in Belize usually begins wet and ends drier as the dry season begins. Weather is cooler and winter rains are dissipating. Waters become calm and clear, marking the beginning of the best months for scuba diving and snorkeling. December holidays are the busiest time for travel and should be booked well in advance.

January in Belize is a transition between the wet and dry seasons. As such, it receives varying amounts of rainfall with mild temperatures. In February Belize has transitioned into the dry season with considerably less rain. Days are mild and nights are cooler, making February a pleasant time of year. Nortes can occur but less frequently. Many people feel that February is the best month to visit Belize, with warm tropical weather and sunny skies.

In May temperatures remain hot, especially inland. Rain increases, usually falling as light showers in the morning with occasional thunderstorms at night. The end of dry season in Belize can mean fewer travelers and less expensive prices on accommodations and tours.

Belize Rainy Season – Low Season for Travel

June through November marks the rainy season in Belize. The rainy season, also known as green season or Belize low season, is characterized by warm temperatures and brief but sometimes intense rain. The rainforest and wildlife come to life with trees and flowers in bloom. This in turn makes birds and wildlife more accessible to travelers. 

Tropical rainfall occurs in June or early July and is punctuated by a reprieve in late July and August known as the “mauger” or “little dry season.” The wettest months occur in September and October. Unless there is a tropical storm, rain showers typically arrive in showers lasting one to two hours. 

The amount of rain can vary considerably by region. For instance, southern Belize can receive more than 150 inches per year while the north rarely receives more than 50 inches per year.

Belize hurricane season formally coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 until November 30 each year. Historically, the most active period for tropical storms is the end of August through mid-October.  Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Belize but can be serious when they do. If you plan to travel this time of year, keep an eye on weather reports and purchase travel insurance at the time of booking.

June marks the start of the Belize rainy season. Temperatures remain high, but fresh breezes off the Caribbean Sea and more frequent but brief afternoon showers keep things moderate and pleasant. Lobster season begins and is available in restaurants across the country. Atlantic hurricane season begins, but statistically not an active month for tropical storms here.

July is statistically the wettest month of the year in Belize. Storms do occur and can last several days, but most rain occurs in predictable morning showers and frequent thunderstorms overnight. Easterly breezes provide relief from the heat inland.

August in Belize offers a brief respite from the rainy season. Known locally as “little dry,” there is slight break from summer rains. Inland winds from the west replace the easterly sea breezes to dry things out a bit. Higher possibility of tropical storms and hurricanes.

Belize in September

September marks the height of the rainy season and the Belize hurricane season. There is increasing rainfall in the early mornings and overnight. But days are often sunny with warm temperatures. This is the low season for tourism. Many Belize catamaran charter boats are out of the water for yearly maintenance. Rainforest wildlife can be viewed year-round in Belize. Monkeys, coatimundi, iguanas, scarlet macaws and blue morpho butterflies are just some of the amazing creatures you may encounter. Food is abundant during the wet season, so wildlife can be most active during this time—especially in June and July as the rains arrive and hungry animals gorge on the blooming trees and flowers. 

The best time of day to view wildlife in the rainforest is early in the morning. Get up before sunrise to experience the most wildlife activity and perhaps a beautiful dawn. Night walks are also a great time to view wildlife. A good guide will help you find all sorts of critters after dark. Most Belize lodges will offer morning and night wildlife walks. 

Best Time for Birding in Belize

Belize is a bird-watching paradise. With over 570 bird species and diverse neotropical landscapes, Belize is a favorite spot among birders and nature travelers. Birding in Belize is excellent year-round.

The best time to travel to Belize for birding is December through April. During the dry season, resident birds are joined by migratory birds from North America. During Belize summer (rainy season), migratory birds arrive from South America. Most organized bird tours operate from January through April.

Best Time to Take a Cruise in Belize

Large cruise ships will call in Belize at any time of year. Belize small ship cruises operate from October through April each year. Belize catamaran charter cruises are available year-round with a short break in September and October.

The best time for sailing in Belize is between June and November. With southeast trade winds averaging 10-13 knots, Belize has great sailing conditions.

Inside the barrier reef, waters are protected from Caribbean Ocean swells but sailing vessels can encounter wind chop. Outside the reef, boats can encounter ocean swells. The best time for sailing and visiting Belize’s outer atolls such as Turneffe Atoll, Lighthouse Reef or Glovers Reef is November through February.

Best Time to Snorkel & Scuba Dive in Belize

Snorkeling and diving are terrific year-round in Belize. Water temperature averages 84 degrees F. Visibility is outstanding and ranges from 60-100 feet. Belize is one of the premiere snorkeling and scuba diving destinations in the world.

The best time to travel to Belize for snorkeling and scuba diving in Belize is between April and June. This time of year, there is increased visibility because winds are calm and the water is clear.

Rains falling July through October do not affect visibility at offshore reef sites, although Caribbean surface conditions can be choppy. 

November through April bring marginally cooler temperatures above and below the water’s surface. During this time most divers are comfortable in a shorty wetsuit.

Best Time to See Whale Sharks in Belize

April and May are the best months to view whale sharks in Belize, although they may also be found in March and June. Whale shark viewing can be dependent on lunar cycles with the best time to snorkel or dive with whale sharks being about two days before the full moon through ten days after the full moon.  

Best Time to Fish in Belize

Belize offers world-class sport fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon. The best time to fish in Belize is May through August when all three species are available. This time of year is known as the grand slam fishing season.  

Bone fish are available year-round, with no clear season. Permit are also found throughout the year but are best when trade winds are consistent mid-winter through early summer. Tarpon are migratory and best fished in June through August. Fishing is encouraged on all Belize catamaran cruises , which often troll while underway, catching whatever nature provides. 

Lobster Season in Belize

The Caribbean spiney lobster is a delicious delicacy. Sometimes referred to locally as crayfish, the scientific name is Panulirus argus . It’s also known as rock lobster or Caribbean lobster.

To preserve the species and maintain a sustainable fishery, the lobster season in Belize is limited to June through February each year. A license is required and there are size limits and restrictions, so check with your guide before going lobster hunting. Exact dates can vary year to year, so check in advance if your plans are hungry for lobster. Catching and eating fresh lobster is a highlight of any Belize charter cruise . 

Belize Conch Season

The Belize conch fishing season typically opens in October and runs through June or until the national catch quota is reached. Queen conch (pronounced conk) is a staple seafood in Belize and the Caribbean. Conch is normally marinated in citrus or pounded thin and sautéed to tenderize the meat. Belizean favorites include conch soup or chowder, conch fritters, conch ceviche and conch stew. The beautiful hard shell is used to make souvenirs, decorations and jewelry.

The Best Times to Visit Belize for the Ultimate Tropical Vacation

Tucked under Mexico’s Quintana Roo state on the east coast of Central America, Belize is a nature lover’s paradise. The tiny nation punches above its weight when it comes to all the tropical adventures found along its roughly 240 miles of Caribbean coastline and within its jungle interior. 

Belize has 400 islands and cays, including Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye, and Half Moon Caye. The country’s vast stretches of protected barrier reef are part of the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, making the country a must-visit destination for scuba divers and snorkelers. Diverse animal species — including jaguars, pumas, and ocelots – dwell in the country’s wildlands and national reserves, including the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Plus, Mayan ruins offer a fascinating look into the area’s ancient history.

These are the best times to go to Belize for beautiful weather, fewer crowds, and more. 

Best Times to Visit Belize for Smaller Crowds 

Belize is busiest around the holiday season from late December to early January and during March and April. “November and May are great times to avoid crowds as most families are preparing for the holidays or back in school from breaks,” says Janet Woollam, managing director at Victoria House Resort & Spa , a 42-key property on Ambergris Caye with a private beachfront. “During these months, travelers can have a more relaxed experience visiting low-trafficked sites like ancient Mayan temples, joining rainforest expeditions, or zip-lining over jungle canopies teeming with adorable black howler monkeys,” she says. 

Best Times to Visit Belize for Good Weather 

While “good weather” can be subjective, it’s safe to say most travelers want to enjoy sunny skies and moderate temperatures and avoid tropical thunderstorms and stifling humidity. 

“January to March are the driest months to visit Belize, with prolonged periods of warm sunshine particularly in the north and central regions,” says William Allison, senior Belize specialist at Audley Travel . Woollam suggests February as a pleasant month to visit, too – but you won’t be the only one with Belize on your radar at this time of year when the temperatures are at their all-around nicest for spending time outside.

Best Times to Visit Belize for Lower Prices 

As long as you don’t mind the rain, June and July can be a good time to take advantage of discounted travel, Allison says. 

“The rainy season (in Belize) begins in June, and with it comes lower prices at hotels,” he says. “June and July are still rewarding times to visit, and the rain is rarely the persistent rainfall that is experienced later in the season, with sharp showers predominantly falling in the afternoon and at night.” 

Another perk of visiting Belize at this time of year, he says, is the start of Caribbean Spiny Lobster season, which kicks off in mid-June and runs through Feb. 15. “Placencia and Ambergris Caye are great places to try some tasty lobster dishes,” he suggests. 

Woollam points to September and October as the traditional sweet spot in Belize for landing lower prices outside of the hotter summer months but warns, “This can be somewhat skewed, as interest in travel is at a high since many would-be travelers weren’t able to go on holiday for the past few years.”

Best Times to Visit Belize for Scuba Diving and Snorkeling 

With waters so blue and brilliant, almost everyone who visits Belize wants to spend some time splashing in the Caribbean Sea. You can snorkel and scuba dive year round in Belize with an average water temperature of around 80 degrees, depending on the season. Water and air temperatures are slightly cooler in Belize during the dry season, which starts in November and runs to July. 

To find diving and snorkeling tour operators, head to spots like Placencia, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker. “Ambergris Caye also serves as a base to plan your offshore dive trips to the world-renowned Blue Hole dive site at Lighthouse Reef Atoll or the less-recognized but equally impressive Turneffe Atoll,” says Woollam, whose hotel arranges local scuba and snorkel tours as well as excursions further afield. 

For a truly special marine encounter, Allison recommends traveling offshore from Placencia to Gladden Spit. “It’s one of the few places in the world that snorkelers and divers can encounter the magnificent whale sharks,” he says, referring to the world’s largest (and very docile, filter-feeding) fish. “They commonly visit during the full moon periods of April and May.”

Worst Times to Visit Belize 

There really isn’t a terrible time to visit Belize, as long as you can handle some inclement weather. Belize does not have the four distinct temperate seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter that can be found in many other places. There is just the “dry season” and the “rainy season”, which is also known as the “wet season”. Belizeans do celebrate summer, which is the period of time when school children are on a 3-month break from classes: June, July and August.

Belize’s dry season runs from December to May. During the months of December, January and February, the temperature drops a bit leading to cool breezy days with lots of sunshine. in this sense, the word “season” doesn’t refer to any natural phenomenon in particular, if not simply the period of time where travel to Belize is more frequent. Belize’s high season extends from roughly mid-November and thins out approaching the end of May and is when Belize is truly a bustling little center of people and activity. In these months in North America and Europe, leaves have fallen, winds get stronger, temperatures plummet and it eventually starts to snow which are strong indicators that it is time to migrate south for the winter, or at least a small part of it.

High season weather is the perfect spring break weather in Belize, travelers flocking south will find that our “winter” climate is quite a bit more docile and prone to more sunny warm days than not. Traveling here anywhere between mid-February to the mid-April will find you in the most agreeable, outdoor friendly tropical weather one can imagine.

The Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge (Ruta Maya for short) is a 4-day long time trial endurance canoe race from the scenic Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio down the Belize river to the old capital. Teams of two or three may enter under different categories, including pleasure craft (just for fun) to paddle down the river to the different stations over the long holiday. Participation is not exclusive to locals, travelers, and foreign teams can enter at their discretion or you can follow along and camp out (and party!) at the different checkpoints as the race goes on.

Rounding out the high season big events roster is Easter. As mentioned before, due to Belize’s large Christian population Easter is also quite the festival to behold. Due to the fasting restrictions, the food cooked on these days by the locals is decidedly themed and centers around non-meat dishes, save for fish.

The church groups organize large elaborate processions depicting the stations of the cross while the locals make beautiful colored sawdust carpet art on the roadways that the procession will pass along. At each pre-determined “station” the procession stops and acts out a different scene of the passion of christ on his walk to crucifixion. It is a little macabre to think about, but it’s an elaborate festival with a lot of thought put into it and is a spectacle to behold.

An added benefit to all the festivities in the months of the high season is a boost to the amount and options for accommodations, some resorts close during the low season slightly limiting your options. Airfare is also more competitive during these times, especially with the newest introduction of Jet Blue’s new route to Belize that starts in October making it easier than ever to get to Belize from wherever you are.

Some seafood also has controlled seasons such as conch and lobster in Belize of which conch is in season during high season and lobster is not.

Belize’s “Low Season”

Belize’s low season extends from the start of June until mid-November when the aforementioned high season kicks off. The low or slow season as we sometimes call it is punctuated by better deals across the board from properties and attractions.

Our summer low season sees more private vacations for travelers who choose to go on holiday during this time and the summer months do not hinder adventures as a majority percentage of our attractions and tours do not close when the season is off. Coming to Belize during our summer and early fall months also gives the opportunity to have a more authentic Belize experience, the higher local to traveler ratio ensures a better chance to see Belizeans in a more relaxed, natural state of being than they would be during busy times.

The low season begins in what we mostly consider the peak of our Caribbean summer, May and June are probably our hottest months. While that prospect may not sound ideal we assure you it is; being a small nation on the edge of the Caribbean sea and dotted with white sand islands makes water sports one of the most enjoyable things here.

Departing from the heat, July onward starts cooling down with the arrival of the rains which come and go at their pleasing throughout August, September, and October. However frequent our rainstorms may be they are always short lived, rarely ever raining constantly for more than an hour before moving on to somewhere else in Belize.

June 15th is the kick off for Lobster season in Belize and in ceremonial fashion the kick off for the real Belizean summer and all the fun associated with it.

To commemorate the opening of the season for lobster the country hosts the annual Lobster fest which is a two-week long party that is spread out between San Pedro town, Caye Caulker, and Placencia village.

Lobsterfest is exactly what it sounds like and just what one would think; a large party in which one eats all things lobster. The locals get creative with their servings of the dish, grilling it, baking it making it into fritters, ceviche, and stews. over these two weeks and three weekends, if you choose to follow it you can partake in all the merriment locals do having your favorite cocktails the Belizean way and a variety of lobster however you may like it. If seafood is your thing, Lobsterfest is definitely the best time to visit Belize.

If lobster isn’t much to your fancy then how about whale sharks? No, we don’t eat whale sharks in Belize, but we do dive with them. Whale sharks are quite literally the biggest fish in the sea measuring up to 40 feet in length which is about three and a half building levels high (for some perspective). The beginning of our balmy summers see’s the annual drive-by of migrating whale sharks to our warm waters in order to spawn. A few choice days in the end of April and the end of May are the best to come see these gargantuan creatures glide through the water feeding on jack and snapper near the Gladden Split.

Snorkel and Scuba expeditions are available for travelers who would like to experience swimming with these submarine sized fish in our clear blue waters, and for those wondering, whale sharks are very tolerant of divers and haven’t been known for liking humans as snacks!

Next up, Belize in September , our month of patriotic celebrations. On the 10th day, Battle of St. Georges cay day commemorates the only major armed conflict to ever occur here. Marching bands and parades take to the streets of the towns and cities on this public and bank holiday and can be considered a spectator sport for travelers as most locals will be parading instead of being at work for the day.

The real big one in September, however, is the 21st, our Independence day. The festivities such as carnivals happen to surround the date, usually, a week before save for the Orange Walk carnival which takes place on an actual day. The carnivals are large scale parades similar to the ones held in other Caribbean nations with big trucks blasting music and costumed dancers making their way behind them, these are quite the spectacle to behold and participation is encouraged so don’t feel afraid to jump right in!

In addition to our patriotic nature, the low season is also the best time to visit if you are more interested in some of our customs that receive less fanfare. When most of you will be celebrating Halloween and trick or treating, locals will be celebrating  Finados .

Finados is a set of days from October 31st to November 2nd in which the dead are honored with prayers and offerings of food much like Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico. Local celebrators construct altars in their homes with pictures of loved ones that have passed on and light candles near the tombs to honor and comfort them.

Edging toward the re-start of high season is the “final” calendar event. Garifuna settlement day in Belize is the day in which we collectively honor the day in which the Garifuna officially came here to live.

The day is festive with Garifuna parades showcasing their flag, traditional dress, their famous drum music and their dances. Aside from all the kinetic energy flowing through on that day, Garifuna settlement day also sees their traditional cooking and dishes on sale for all to enjoy, Garifuna people and even non-Garifuna try their hand at dishes like Sere and Hudut and Boil Up to fuel all the lively celebrations taking place.

The dry season, which lasts from January to May, is the ideal time to travel to Belize. The type of weather you get will vary by region even though you can experience warm temperatures all over the country. In the Cayo District and on the Cayes, expect clear, sunny days. Best Times to Visit Belize

Belize Seasons

There are two distinct wet and dry seasons in Belize. December through May is typically the dry season, and June through November is the wet season. Rainfall can happen at any time of year in the tropics, but it tends to come in short bursts during the dry season. A third transition season is acknowledged by some locals during the winter. Here, we dive deeper to explain Belize travel seasons and suggest the ideal times of year to visit.

Belize Dry Season – High Season for Travel

High season for travel and cruising is the Belize dry season, which lasts from December to May. Temperatures that range from warm to hot, sunny days, calming trade winds, and little rain are characteristics of the climate.

From December through February, strong northerly winds called “nortes” can blow (see norte season below). With little rain, pleasant temperatures, and calm, clear water, March and April are picture-perfect. When rain does occur during the dry season, it usually does so in moderate, brief spurts that have a pleasant cooling effect.

Prices rise during the peak season, especially around the holidays of Christmas and Easter. There is more crowding at hotels and attractions. Small-ship cruises to Belize sell out quickly. If you want to visit Belize while it’s dry, we advise making your reservations as soon as possible.

Belize Rainy Season – Low Season for Travel

In Belize, the rainy season lasts from June to November. The rainy season, also known as the green season or Belize’s low season, is characterized by warm temperatures and brief but occasionally intense rain. Flowers and trees in bloom bring the rainforest and its wildlife to life. Travelers can then see birds and other wildlife more easily as a result.

Tropical rainfall occurs in June or early July and is punctuated by a reprieve in late July and August known as the “mauger” or “little dry season.” September and October are when it rains the most. Unless there is a tropical storm, rain showers usually last one to two hours.

Each region has a different average annual rainfall. For instance, the north of Belize rarely receives more than 50 inches of precipitation annually while the south of Belize can receive more than 150 inches.

Belize Norte Season

When the rainy season turns into the dry season, some Belizeans will recognize a third season. The norte season occurs from November through February and is characterized by occasional strong northerly winds or “nortes” coming from the Nortes from the U.S. and Mexico can bring heavy clouds and chilly nights, resulting in some of the lowest temperatures of the year in the low 60s.

Belize Hurricane Season

The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 every year, officially overlaps with Belize hurricane season. When to Visit Belize

The high season in Belize parallels the dry season, which runs from late November to early May. If you want to soak up sun on the beach and enjoy the country’s best weather , then this is the time to come. It’s also perfect for travelers wanting to escape the cold winter months of North America. During this season, temperatures average around 80°F (27°C). The early dry season can sometimes see bursts of wind (known as “northers”), while the late dry season—around March and April—tends to be calm and clear. This is a great time of the year to go scuba diving and snorkeling.

Coming to Belize during the high season means that hotels and attractions will be more crowded. Accordingly, prices are higher and reservations must be made early. Tourists typically start coming to Belize in larger numbers after Thanksgiving, with the largest wave of visitors arriving between mid-December and mid-January.

If you’re looking to save money, come to Belize during the rainy season, which runs from June through November. Early on in this season—around May and June—is actually a good time to visit, as it isn’t super rainy and there tend to be fewer tourists than during the high season. The same goes for September and October, the later months of the rainy season. Visiting later in the rainy season also means that you’re more likely to have privacy on beaches and islands .

The main drawback of visiting during the rainy season is that dirt roads may become quite muddy, which can limit access in remote areas. Floods can occur in southern Belize and temporarily shut down portions of highways. Though, even during inclement weather, it's still possible to enjoy the shore and islands of Belize , so you can expect to pack for an amazing snorkeling or diving adventure anytime of year.

16 things to know before traveling to Belize

It may be the second-smallest country in Central America but Belize delivers across the board .

Eco-adventures by the score, cultural heritage as diverse as the landscape, Maya temples that tower over modern human-made structures, hundreds of islands with talcum-white sands , the world’s second-largest barrier reef, made for diving ... you get the idea .

On the mainland, overgrown rainforests reveal hiking trails to double waterfalls. Complex cave systems run underground, while winding rivers are best enjoyed by inner tube. Then there’s the food: aromatic, franchise-free bites can be found on every other street corner, as is the inviting Belizean spirit.

But where to start? Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Belize before you even set off.

1. You’ll need at least seven days in Belize

Belize can feel like both the Caribbean and Central America all at once – and you can experience it all in a single vacation, as it’s easy to cross the entire country in a one-day road trip . Still, it’s better to do things the Belizean way: unhurried.

Aim to spend at least a week here. Split your itinerary between Northern, Central and Southern Belize , and plan to stay at least three nights in each area. This will allow you enough time to enjoy your accommodation, visit the top-rated sights and recover in between.

2. You probably won’t need a visa

A select few countries do, however. Verify whether you need an entry visa to Belize on the Immigration Department’s website . But note that all visitors — even visa-free entrants — will need to apply for an extension to stay in the country for more than 30 days, depending on your citizenship.

3. Drive during the day

With rental cars costing as little as US$50 per day, it’s a doddle navigating the five major highways of Belize.

However, they’re dimly lit and the single-lane roads are often lined with “sleeping policemen,” a colloquial nickname for speed bumps. They’re often unpainted too, so it’s best to stick to driving in the daylight hours.

4. Watch out for wildlife on the roads

Green signs are directional, while yellow signs warn that wildlife could be crossing. Look out for tapir on the John Smith Airport Link Rd and coatimundis on the scenic Hummingbird Highway.

5. Try the street food

Scooped from deep pots of fragrant stews, coconut milk-infused rice and beans are often served with caramelized fried plantain. A quasi-religious meal, everything is homemade and some may take offense if you don’t attempt to finish your plate.

Street food is relatively cheap here . Don't miss the gravy-filled meat pies that fog clear-plastic containers balancing on the bicycle handlebars of mobile vendors, or the “johnny cakes,” coconut-based baked biscuits sliced and stuffed for long journeys.

Other staples include masa (a dough of ground corn) that is transformed into deep-fried favorites like panades (crispy crescents of beans, cheese, or hashed fish) and salbutes (open-faced rounds piled with shredded chicken and cabbage).

Late-night grub is often meat-heavy street tacos, pupusas (a cornmeal cake stuffed with beans, cheese and fried pork), burritos, or a not-so-humble hotdog with bacon and caramelized onions. Any griddle on wheels will fill your stomach for BZ$10.

6. It’s OK to drink tap water in Belize but filtered water is the norm

While it’s OK to drink tap water in Belize, filtered water is the norm. It usually comes in small bottles or from a five-gallon water dispenser.

Since Belize’s single-use plastic ban took effect in April 2019 (albeit excluding disposable water bottles), carrying a reusable water bottle is applauded. Hotels and resorts will often have large dispensers available near the front desk and most restaurants will refill your bottle for free.

7. Time feels more like a suggestion in Belize

Belize offers a very slow, laid-back pace of life. That goes for everything from government offices (including immigration) to public transportation. Be flexible with your plans and be patient, even on the mainland.

Public transportation overland and on water is less than a third of the cost of domestic airlines such as  Maya Island Air and Tropic Air  but, unsurprisingly, it will take you much longer to go the scenic route. Both the water taxis and bus routes are unlikely to leave on time, so account for 15 minutes of wiggle room.

To avoid stopping for every roadside hitchhiker along the way when using the bus system , always choose the “Express” option if your final destination is advertised on the windshield.

8. Be polite if you want to impress the locals

Locals will greet one another and reciprocity is expected. Bidding a general “good morning” as you enter a room goes a long way, and a simple nod of acknowledgment is returned with a smile. Belizeans like to chat, so expect to make small talk while waiting in a queue.

9. Petty crime is your main safety concern in Belize

Like any destination, it’s best not to make yourself a target for crimes of opportunity. Avoid isolated areas, don’t be flashy with money or jewelry, and don’t take public transport alone at night.

Taxis are pricier but safer and easily recognizable with green license plates. Hotels will also usually have their own list of trusted drivers.

In tourist zones, some vendors may be persistent, but a polite “no, thank you” should do the trick. Crime in Belize is largely drug- or gang-related, more notably in select pockets of Belize City.

Unless actively seeking them out, the average traveler naturally bypasses infamous hotspots entirely by sticking to designated tourism zones. Beyond signage, Tourism Police are omnipresent on foot, bicycle and ground patrols, but there’s still no better indicator of safety than your own gut.

10. Don’t forget to tip

Tourism has helped to instill a tipping culture in Belize, but it’s not an outright requirement. Some restaurants auto-charge up to a 20% sit-down service charge, so double-check receipts before (unnecessarily) adding more.

A gratuity is expected in cash for servers, appreciated for tours and goes a long way for housekeeping, but it’s totally discretionary based on the service you experience. You can skip tipping elsewhere but taxis sometimes round up a fare as Belize has no fixed tariffs.

If you’ve received great service, you can match the 12.5% General Sales Tax on the receipt. For an exceptional tour, a 20% tip is recommended.

11. Pack some US dollars

You won’t need to carry loads of cash, as there are plenty of point-of-sale machines and ATMs in the more popular destinations.

US dollars are accepted across the country at a rate of two-to-one, though try to carry US$10 and US$20 notes as they are easier to make change. You’ll likely get smaller bills in Belize dollars back.

12. Don’t fear the rainy season

Belize’s rainy season (June to November) coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season. This means cheaper hotel rates, lower room occupancy, and better deals.

Major attractions – like Maya sites, archaeological reserves, hiking trails and waterfalls – will all stay open during this period unless nature decides otherwise. All in all, it can be a good time to visit.

Flooding risks tend to subside within 48 hours and the high winds are more of a risk to your driving than the downpours. Some hotels and restaurants will close during their slowest months, such as October, so check ahead.

13. Buy travel insurance

This is always recommended but especially so if you decide to visit during the rainy season. Buy travel insurance to protect your trip should a hurricane cut it short.

14. Belize has decriminalized weed, but that does not mean it’s legal

In November 2017, Belize amended its Misuse of Drugs Act to decriminalize marijuana use on private property for adults in possession of up to 10g.

However, be warned: selling, growing, or smoking weed on public property remains a federal offense. Despite the impression given by some, it’s best not to buy or sell marijuana.

15. The LGBTIQ+ community is generally accepted

Although homosexuality wasn’t formally legalized in Belize until 2016, it was the first former British colony in the Caribbean to overturn its anti-sodomy laws. Still, public displays of affection between same-sex couples may solicit stares here. The main tourism zones, such as Ambergris Caye , are the most gay friendly.

16. Solo women travelers are welcomed

No stranger to solo travelers or backpackers on a budget, Belize is also fairly safe for women traveling alone. Harassment will often come in the form of cat-calling, but nuisances tend to back off once if you stand your ground or ignore them outright. “No” is largely respected here, but sometimes you may have to say it loudly.

Weather in Belize: Climate, Seasons, and Average Monthly Temperature

Located along the Caribbean Coast of Central America, Belize is a warm, tropical destination all year long with an average temperature of 84 degrees F (29 degrees C). The temperature rarely dips below 60 degrees F (16 degrees C) even overnight, and humidity levels are typically around 83 percent. This consistency in the weather is quite helpful when considering your travel plans for when you should go and what you should bring with you.

That said, Belize does have two distinct seasons that can have a direct impact on any travel plans. The dry season brings less rainfall and slightly cooler temperatures, while the rainy season increases the chances for storms, with higher temperatures and humidity to go along with it. Both seasons occur at distinct times of the year, making them very easy to predict.

Hurricane Season in Belize

As with any country that borders the Caribbean, Belize has the potential to fall in the path of a hurricane. Generally speaking, hurricane season in the Atlantic runs from June until mid-November, with the potential for dangerous, destructive, and potentially life-threatening storms to arise during that time. In Belize, the highest probability for these storms comes between August and October, with the occasional outlier occurring from time to time.

If you're making long-term plans to visit Belize, it is difficult to tell if the country will get hit by a tropical storm or full-fledged hurricane while you're there. If you will be visiting during hurricane season, however, it is a good idea to check the forecasts before your departure. If significant storms are in the area and could potentially make landfall, it could disrupt travel, close resorts, and attractions, and even cause you to cancel altogether.

While destructive hurricanes have hit Belize in the past, chances are, you'll be completely safe throughout your journey. This is particularly true if you're planning to stay further inland, as the coastal regions, along with Belize's reefs and cays, usually taking the brunt of the storm. Still, it never hurts to be as prepared as possible when visiting a destination where a hurricane remains a possibility.

Dry Season in Belize

The dry season in Belize runs December through May, which also coincides with the high season in terms of travelers. During these months, temperatures tend to be a bit cooler, and conditions are generally drier, with less rainfall and lower humidity. That doesn't necessarily mean that it is always sunny; however, as northerly winds can sometimes result in cloud cover as well.

The coolest months of the year are typically December, January, and February. During this period, the average daily temperatures are in the mid to upper 70 degrees F, with slightly warmer conditions in the southern regions of the country. These are also the months when the overnight lows are at their coldest as well, hovering in the upper 60 degrees F. Bringing a light jacket will help to keep you comfortable during those times.

March, April, and May tend to be a bit warmer and drier, with daytime highs climbing to as much as 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) at times. The least amount of rainfall occurs from February to April, with May seeing slightly more precipitation as the start of the wet season draws near. Those storms tend to be brief and gentle, with the weather soon clearing up.

Because the climate and weather conditions in Belize are relatively stable during the dry season, the conditions shouldn't have much impact on most travelers' plans . Even during the colder periods of the year, the waters off the country's east coast are warm and inviting, while the rainforest is less oppressive and intimidating. Take advantage of those conditions to make the most of your visit.

What to pack: Belize is a tropical environment, so be sure to bring light, comfortable, and breathable clothes. Shorts and t-shirts will be perfectly fine for most outings, although a light jacket may be for early mornings and after dark. This being the Caribbean, flip-flops and a swimsuit are an excellent choice for the beach, while hiking shoes or sneakers will work well in the jungle.

Wet Season in Belize

Belize's Wet Season runs from June through November, bringing warmer temperatures, higher humidity, and generally steamier conditions along with it. The storms usually tend to form in the afternoon, with heavy rainfall occurring for an hour or two before ending again by evening. This means that even on rainy days during the wettest time of the year, the sun still manages to poke out for awhile.

Generally speaking, September and October are the rainiest months of the year, with Belize City receiving, on average, 9.6 inches (24.5 cm) and 12 inches (30.5 cm), respectively.   Southern Belize is the rainiest region of the country, with precipitation amounts dropping off slightly the further north you travel.

Average high temperatures during the wet season will hover around 88 to 90 degrees F (31 to 32 degrees C), which, when mixed with the higher humidity rates can cause things to get a bit steamy at times. This is especially true in the dense jungles that are further inland, while on the coast, the ocean breezes help mitigate the hotter conditions.

Unsurprisingly, the Wet Season concedes with the low travel season in Belize, which means fewer people at most of the attractions. That can also result in better prices on airfare, hotels, and amenities, although keep in mind that some popular tourist destinations could be closed. For example, the heavy rains can make visiting Barton Creek Cave or Actun Tunichil Muknal dangerous, so those places could be completely shut down to visitors. Be sure to plan and check with tour operators to see what options are available to avoid getting turned away from an activity or destination that you wanted to explore.

What to pack: In addition to packing much of the same clothing and footwear as you would for the dry season, you'll naturally want to bring a rain jacket as well. If your goal is to go hiking in the jungle, rain pants might be in order too. Apparel that uses lightweight, fast-drying fabrics will likely prove useful as well, as there is a good chance that you'll find yourself caught in a rainstorm at some point during your visit.

Overall, the weather in Belize is fairly predictable at all times of the year. If you're looking for less rain and more stability, go during the dry season, but expect the country to be busier and more expensive. If you want to save some cash and avoid the crowds, choose the rainy season instead. Just be prepared to deal with the potential for weather delays and cancellations.
