Settled back in 1614, New York State's Capital of Albany is the definition of a historic gem and thanks to the Discover Albany Visitors Center, you can explore this city in a unique way.

Teaming up with the Capital District Transportation Authority, the visitors center is offering one more date during the 2019 season for their historic trolley tours.

On September 20th, beginning at 11 a.m. passengers will make their way around the city of Albany in a charming trolley.

Throughout the duration of your ride you’ll get to enjoy intriguing storytelling, all while learning about the history and architecture of New York State’s capital.

While you're enjoying the hour and a half long trip, you'll sit back as the trolley takes you to areas like Albany’s Warehouse District, Ten Broeck Triangle, Downtown Albany, Capitol Hill, Center Square, and Washington Park.

Exploring more than 400-years of history, the historic narrated tour gives both locals and out-of-town New Yorkers a chance to learn more about one of the state's most historic cities.

If you can’t happen to make it to the final historic tour but you’re looking to board the trolley, you’ll have plenty of other opportunities to catch a ride like on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights between 5 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., when the trolley runs for free around Albany - stopping near restaurants, attractions, hotels, and parking garages in Downtown and along Lark Street.

CDTA is proud to connect our communities with trolley service throughout the Capitol Region. Scroll down to see our offerings and plan your next trolley trip today. 

The Lake George Trolley will begin operating weekend service on Friday, May 24, 2024. Trolleys will run from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., running every 20 to 30 minutes. CDTA will operate the trolley seven days a week through Columbus/Indigenous Peoples’ Day weekend. The Lake George Trolley routes are the Glens Falls-Lake George Trolley ( #876 ) which covers Glens Falls, Lake George RV Park and Lake George Village including the shopping outlets and the Great Escape. The Lake George-Bolton Trolley ( #877 ) which covers Lake George Village, Hearthstone Campground and Bolton Landing, including Diamond Point.

The fare for the Lake George Trolley is $1, and it is free for children 5 and younger. For more information about CDTA services and the Lake George Trolley schedules, please visit  https://www.cdta.org .

Service Updates (August 29, 2024):   The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) will make changes to trolley service in Lake George beginning Tuesday, September 3, 2024. 

Route #876  (Glens Falls-Lake George Trolley): Monday through Thursday the trolley will run every 45 mins from Ridge Street Terminal in Glens Falls to Beach Road Terminal in Lake George. Trips will serve Lake George RV Park every 45-90 minutes.

Route #877  (Lake George-Bolton Trolley): Monday through Thursday the trolley will run every 80 minutes from Beach Road Terminal to Bolton Landing via Hearthstone Campground and Diamond Point.

Lake George Trolley will provide easy access to:

All Over Albany

Riding the trolley -- everywhere.

There's something about trolleys that lights people up -- even though a lot of people weren't even alive the last time a trolley rolled through Albany. It's been almost 70 years since the lines stopped.

We were thinking about trolleys again this week after seeing this photo from the College of St. Rose Archives . It's Madison Ave at Partridge, facing west, sometime in the 1940s, right about the time the trolleys stopped. We love the way the tracks lead away covered by the canopy of trees.

That photo prompted us to dig through some of the history of trolleys in Albany -- which is like looking through some alternate transit universe.

The trolley had a pretty good run in the Capital Region. The first tracks in Albany were laid in 1862 for horse-drawn trolleys, which were replaced not long after that with with electric trolleys. And after a few decades the region had a rich system of intra- and inter-urban rail. [ A History of Local Rail Transit in the City of Albany (1862-1946) , via Albany County, via the Wayback Machine]

Check out this excellent Schenectady Railway map from around 1910 . At the time a person could ride trolleys between Albany Schenectady, Troy, and Saratoga -- and then in those cities, take trolleys around the town. Here's a section of the map:

The train and trolley system was so robust in this part of the country that there were guidebooks -- such as Trolley Trips Through New England 1915 -- for people looking to take trips that way. The wider system stretched from Fulton and Warren counties through the core of the Capital District, into Columbia County, Western Mass, and into Vermont. Here's a regional map from that book, as well as a trolley map of Troy:

For a while, the trolleys were a main part of the city of Albany's transportation system. The trolleys and tracks are easy to spot in this postcard and photo from the area around what is now the SUNY administration building. The trolley cars themselves were rather handsome from the outside.

And popular, apparently. From a poem titled "The Commuter's Eight-Fifteen" in a 1928 edition of the St. Rose publication The Rambler :

Did you ever board a trolley car To make an eight-fifteen? Get a seat? Oh, what a joke! Why, a strap can't even be seen. "Move up in front! There's lots of room!" --The conductor's favorite cry-- But with ten on your back, you just can't budge, No matter how hard you try. The end of the line,--the transfer point; Then one grand dash for the bus. There is certainly joy in commuting from Troy, But,--who'd want to change places with us?

The rails in the Madison Ave photo at the very top were part of the Pine Hills line, which ran from Pearl Street, up Hamilton to Lark, and then up Madison, eventually with an extension all the way to Manning Blvd (which, at the time, was the suburbs). Other lines ran along Clinton Ave, Quail, Broadway, South Pearl, and Delaware. Here's a map:

After a run of about 80 years, the trolleys were overtaken by buses and cars. They were discontinued in 1946.

You can see still evidence of the trolley system if you know where to look. There's an old trolley pole on Hamilton Ave in Albany. And that old building that seems totally out of place in Colonie at 1830 Central Ave is a former power station for the Schenectady Railway. And every now and then old tracks are found while digging for some other project.

Great piece. My parents both grew up in the "Tri-Cities" (a moniker widely used before "Capital Region" became the go-to term, a function of suburban sprawl?) in the 1930s and 1940s and fondly recall the excitement of riding the trolleys when they were small. And just yesterday I noted the visible tracks on lower Hamilton Street in Albany, between Phillip and Grand Streets. I wish more residential side streets retained trolley tracks as a hat tip to the city's history. Much more effective and less annoying than the historic cobblestone intersections throughout parts of town.

What I wouldn't give to have those trolleys back. People love nostalgia and I believe a trolley system would definitely generate economic activity. Just Imagine one of those trolley lines running from the D & H Railroad Building up State and connecting to uptown. Could anyone really argue that would be a bad thing?

I remember the last trolley to go was the So. Pearl line that ran to Kenwood. we lived on Broad St. on the third floor and the house would rattle when the trolley went by. It ran every 20 minutes.We would transfer at State and Pearl to other lines. It was noisy but convenient.

Excellent! Damn, now I've gotta go digging through Fordham's archives, too?

One of the early inducements to buying a home in Pine Hills was that it was a quick streetcar ride from downtown . . . a businessman could go home for lunch (after all, the wife was there to prepare it) and get back downtown in just minutes. Faster, I'll wager, than it can be done today by car.

Not sure if its true but I heard they destroyed all the old cars for scrap where the VA is now on Holland. Amazing how short-sighted people are sometime. They though "why would any future generations want to see these cars? Let's destroy them for a couple bucks." Mayor Jennings says the same thing today about all the 18th and 19th century buildings he's demolished for important things like....parking lots.

Bringing back trolleys even just say Broadway up State to Washington to Colvin would be the same as asking our politicians to build a couple pyramids. It ain't gonna happen. Only way that happens if private citizens organize it and get corporate sponsors. Then it has a chance. Imagine getting on one at Colvin or Quail to Lark for a couple pops then down to Wolff's.

Fascinating piece-especially for someone who did not grow up in the Capital Region/Tri-Cities. I love learning about the history. My grandmother grew up in Schenectady during the 1920s & 30s. They regularly took the trolley to Albany and never needed to own a car. Wouldn't that be nice?

Lived in Albany - 1935-1953. Rode the trolley's by myself and with boyhood friend Roger Nieman from about 1947 to 1950, I believe. Used to catch one at Delaware Avenue and Morton Avenue area - ride to Second Avenue, down Second Avenue to Pearl Street, head North to downtown. Took other trips as well, mostly over the whole system. Great way to travel, still love trolley cars today, ride them in San Francisco when I get up there......

Whenever you bring up the possibility of light rail in the capital region, the objection is raised that we don't have the population density and size to support it. The history of trolley lines in Albany, Schenectady, and Troy casts some doubt on that claim.

Toronto is one of the few North American cities that retained their trolley lines, and updated them for the modern era. Today the 504 King street line alone books 72, 000 trips per day. Electric trolleys (or streetcars and they're called in Toronto) are a lovely way to travel.

You’ll take a 12 mile round trip steeped in history, where the lush woods of Clay County are reflected in the crystal clear water of Buffalo Creek. Pedal past a wrecked train car, waterfalls, and high cliffs before reaching the creekside turnaround picnic area.

The breathtaking Amador Central Railroad traces the contours of rolling hills revealing panoramic views from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains all the way to the Coastal Ranges. Just 45 minutes south of Sacramento, surrounded by gold rush towns steeped in history, wineries, and warmed by the northern California sun. This is Gold Country - the Heart of the Mother Lode.

Cooperstown, NY

Cooperstown, featuring the world famous Baseball Hall of Fame is also home to the Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad. Ride "The Home Run" - a 12 mile round trip through the farm lands and forests alongside of the Susquehanna River. Or choose the 'Southpaw Slider' an 8 mile round trip to the Forest Glen Turnaround and back again.

Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Division operates along the Old Colony Railroad, built in 1862. The rails meander alongside spectacular Narragansett Bay offering riders unique views that include Jamestown, the Mount Hope Bridge, Hog Island Lighthouse, and coastal woodlands. Riders on the Southern Circuit are invited to bring a picnic to enjoy at Bayside Station during the 20 minute turnaround.

The Catskills, NY

Experience the magic of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad as you travel alongside the Esopus Creek through the beautiful woods of the Catskill Mountains. Under a canopy of maple and birch, with the river rushing by and the mountains in the distance, this tour is an unforgettable experience. Bring a drink and a snack to enjoy at the turnaround.

Bluegrass, KY

Rail Explorers is in the horse capital of the world (& we are in the heart of Bourbon country too!) Just 15 minutes from Lexington, Rail Explorers operate with the Bluegrass Scenic Railroad & Museum in Versailles, KY. On this 10 mile round trip ride you’ll travel through thoroughbred horse farms & deep limestone cuts to the turnaround on the cliffs above the Kentucky River. Enjoy the view of the Wild Turkey Distillery and Young's High Bridge built in 1889.

Rail Explorers have partnered with the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad to bring the first Rail Explorers Experience to the Midwest. Everyone can enjoy this activity: couples young and old, groups of friends, and families of all ages and abilities. The pedal powered Explorers provide a smooth and comfortable adventure suitable for all.

Guided but Solitary

At Rail Explorers safety is our first priority, so all tours have a trained guide at the front and in the last Explorer. Tours depart on a set schedule, but all riders are spread out, with up to 500ft between you and those in front and behind. The front and rear guides ensure that everyone arrives safely, but the distance between the bikes allows everyone to go at their own pace and enjoy the magic of riding the rails in solitude.

Blake Shelton’s “Friends & Heroes” 2025 Tour Coming to Albany March 8

Country superstar Blake Shelton is bringing his 2025 “Friends & Heroes” Tour to the MVP Arena in Albany March 8, with appearances by Craig Morgan, Deana Carter, and Trace Adkins in addition to special guest Emily Ann Roberts.

American singer-songwriter, television personality, and country music star, Blake Shelton is a household name for fans of today’s country scene. Whether it’s from his 12 albums, his countless singles- 28 of which charted number one, his appearances as a coach on NBC’s T he Voice , or his marriage to Gwen Stefani, most are familiar with Blake Shelton’s name. 

Born and raised in Oklahoma, Shelton has been pursuing music from the very beginning. Immediately after graduating high school, he moved to Nashville and worked his way up to a production contract with Sony Music. After a short period of work for the company and eventually signing as a singer-songwriter with Giant Records, Blake Shelton released his debut single “Austin”, landing him his first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks. Three months later, he released his debut studio album under Warner Bros. Records, and the rest is history.

Eleven albums, countless awards, and a long list of other accomplishments later, Blake Shelton is returning to the touring lifestyle just off the heels of his Las Vegas residency for his Friends & Heroes 2025 tour, which showcases just that- the musical works of his heroes and friends in the industry. 

Reviving the concept after the initial Friends & Heroes tour in 2019, the 2025 lineup will feature Grand Ole Opry member and Army veteran Craig Morgan, singer-songwriter and active voice for Artist & Creators with Advocacy in Washington D.C. Deana Carter, singer-songwriter, actor, and two-decade Grand Ole Opry member Trace Adkins , and previous member of Blake Shelton’s team on The Voice , rising country star Emily Ann Roberts.

Country music superstar Blake Shelton has announced his “Friends & Heroes Tour” for 2025, set to follow his Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in February.

The 12-date run will feature special guests Craig Morgan, Deana Carter, Trace Adkins and “The Voice” alum Emily Ann Roberts.

“The ‘Friends & Heroes Tour’ is one of my favorite tours because as a fan, I can’t think of a cooler concert to see,” Shelton said in a statement. “I get spoiled every night seeing these icons come out and do four or five of the biggest hits of their storied careers. And then get introduced to new talent like Emily Ann. I can’t wait.”

The tour will kick off on February 27 in Lexington, KY, and will include a stop in Upstate New York on March 8 at Albany’s MVP Arena before wrapping up on March 22 in State College, PA.

Ticket presale begins today (Sept. 10) at 10 a.m. ET. Fans must sign up for presale access.

General sale begins Friday, September 13, at 10 a.m. ET on Ticketmaster .
