What is the best time to visit Wayanad?

The best time to visit Wayanad is in the winter months between November and February . This is peak tourist season in the region, with temperatures dipping to 20°C. Mist surrounds the verdant hills and the pleasantly cool weather is perfect for outdoor adventures. Enjoy early morning boat rides of Pookode Lake, hike to the striking Edakkal Caves or trek up to viewpoints like Lakkidi and Neelimala to take in some mesmerising landscapes.

Summers are fairly hot and humid in Wayanad and not an ideal time to visit. However, if you enjoy the rains, the best time to visit Wayanad is in the monsoon season. The hill station receives heavy rainfall between June and September and this brings thunderstorms and grey skies. Clouds hang low in the hill station at this time, engulfing the hills as the surroundings turn lush green. Every outdoor activity is a touch more adventurous because of the weather, but don’t miss visiting waterfalls like Meenmutty during this time. The three-tiered waterfall comes alive with the rains, as do the Soochipara and Thusharagiri Falls. Thanks Ann. There are many treasures of India that people are unaware of. Nothing to be ashamed of. As far as I know the best quality tea and coffee produced in India are exported to the West because they are way too expensive for Indian markets.

India is really starting to grow on me, I am getting more and more intrigued. And to be honest, if I could afford one more, longer trip in 2020, it would probobly be to India 🙂

Wayanad is a lush green district nestled in the state of Kerala , marking the southern tip of the Deccan Plateau. With its green tree covers and waterfalls, Wildlife Sanctuary and old caves, Wayanad becomes one of the most coveted holiday destinations down south. The best time to visit Wayanad is between October and May, even though the weather in Wayanad is pleasant all year round. The temperatures are regulated due to the town's relative height. 

Summer (March-May)

Imagine the doldrums of Indian summer, and then put it aside. Wayanad summers are nothing like that. No scorching heat, no sweating all day round, no toasting under the sun's angry glare. The temperature in Wayanad is anywhere between 20-30°C in summer, with cool breezes sweeping the district because of the evergreen forest cover. Like all Indian towns, Wayanad experiences summer in months from March to May. This time is good to visit, but is slightly warmer than the breezier winter months. Even so, it doesn't succeed in stealing much fun from your trip.

Monsoon (June-October)

Wayanad is not exceedingly wet, considering it receives around 300 mm rainfall annually with monsoon temperatures varying from 15-25°C. The landscape changes and becomes greener than you ever thought possible. A heavy mist hangs in the air, engulfing Wayanad in a mystical charm. 

However, monsoon may not be the best season to visit Wayanad as outdoor activities can be restricted, especially the Wildlife Sanctuary Safari tour, which is one of the top most attractions here.

Winter (October- February)

Winters make the peak of tourist season in Wayanad and the temperatures fall to anywhere between 10-25°C. It is not too cold, neither warm. Wayanad – an introduction

The largest plateau region of Kerala, the one where the mighty eastern and western ghats guarding the peninsular India meet is what best describes Wayanad. It is a large district in Kerala, landlocked and covered in dense green forests, wildlife sanctuaries, tea gardens spanning miles and miles, lush green paddy fields, beautiful hills and waterfalls and natural lakes. So, in short, Wayanad is natural beauty at it’s best!!

Top regions of Wayanad

Wayanad district is broadly divided in 3 major regions :

• Sulthan Bathery in the east
• Kalpetta in the south west
• Manthanvaadi in the west and north west

Each of these regions is beautiful by all means, has several comfortable homestays, hotels and luxurious resorts. But, if you want to explore all the places to see in Wayanad in one trip, you will need to stay a few nights in each of the three regions and then explore around. We are sharing in a later section below a sample day by day itinerary to explore all the top places to see in Wayanad along with recommendation on where to stay in each region.

As for us, since we live in Bangalore which is not very far from Wayanad. So, Wayanad makes for a perfect weekend getaway from Bangalore for us. As a result, we are exploring Wayanad region by region over different trips. And for the same reasons, we didn’t include Wayanad in our week long trip exploring Kerala . Years back, on our first trip to Wayanad we stayed in a resort in north west of Wayanad. And on our way back to Bangalore from there, we visited Edakkal caves – the most famous of the places to see in Wayanad. But located in South east Wayanad district!! So, I must say, I had no understanding of the whole geography of the region at that time.

In April 2023 , we did our second trip to Wayanad and our first staycation trip to Wayanad. This time, we stayed for one night in the Manthanvaadi region , in Thirunelli Village at the Mayookham Resort. And visited the nearby Thirunelli Temple , one of the top places to see in Wayanad. And for the second night we stayed at Raindrops Resort in Sulthan Bathery . While returning from here to Bangalore, we crossed the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and spotted some animals there.

Sulthan Bathery is closed to Bangalore and thus attracts the most number of tourists. However, this area has a main town that has developed fast over the last few years. So, I will encourage my readers to explore further in the south, north and west of Wayanad. As these areas are still unexploited, full of dense greenery and solitude. Also, The Banasura Hills and Banasura Sagar Reserve are two very stunning regions in the west of Wayanad, located in Manthanvaadi region . So, these are the next top places to see in Wayanad in our bucket list. And then comes the Vayithri village in Kalpetta region . Full of forests and beautiful waterfalls, the Vayithri region is also home to several top resorts in Wayanad.

Best places to see in Wayanad

Having set the context on different regions of Wayanad, now lets get started with the top places to see in Wayanad.

Bamboo Forest Park – a one of a kind among places to see in Wayanad

Wayand tops the bamboo growing regions of Kerala. And as such, there are several grooves or rather forests of bamboo in Wayanad. But the one near Sulthan Bathery is very famous among tourists. And this bamboo forest is developed like a park. Which is perfect for a slow walk in the middle of the nature, with tall bamboo trees from either side making an arch. The pathway runs along a narrow stream leading all the way to the kabini river and the Kuruva Island.

Kuruvadweep – a unique one among places to see in Wayanad

The Kuruvadweep or Kuruva Island is another beautiful place to visit in Wayand. Actually, it is a natural island formed by the looping stream of Kabini river. And one can reach here through a small ferry ride of some 5 minutes. Also, the Kuruva Island is famous habitat for many species of flora and fauna found in this region of India. Overall,. it makes for a relaxed picnic getaway from the hustle and bustle of the cities.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary – one of the many places to see in Wayanad for wildlife

Wayanad region is abundant in several wildlife sanctuaries. Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is one of them. This wildlife sanctuary is located on the Kodagu road, 20km from Manthanvady. A safari is offered in this wildlife sanctuary in a jeep. Wherein you have the opportunity to site several animals including tiger, panther and elephants.

Thirunelli Temple – a historical site among places to see in Wayanad

Thirunelli Temple is one of the oldest temples of Kerala and India. It is said that the God Brahma created this temple and dedicated it to lord Vishnu. The outer structure of the temple is almost in ruins now but the main shrine is intact. And the reconstruction is planned soon. The temple is located in a very scenic location with dramatic backdrops of mountains. Visiting here on my trip to Wayanad reminded me of my visit to temples located in similar backdrop on my trip to Bhutan and also in Palampur .

Vilangad Water Falls – one of the places to see in Wayanad for that music of water

A beautiful waterfall located on the border of Kozhikod and Wayanad districts of Kerala, the Vilangad Water Falls is a must visit among places to see in Wayanad, particularly if you are in this region. If you want to visit here, or any other waterfalls in Wayanad, the best time to visit will be post monsoons in October or November when the water volume is at its best. We followed the same strategy when we visited the majestic Athirapally waterfalls on our week long trip to Kerala .

Mudikkal waterfalls

Yet another beautiful and unexplored waterfall of Kerala, the Mudikkal Waterfall is located in Ernakulam District, on the border of Wayanad. If you are in this region, do visit this waterfall in Wayanad.

Pakranthalam Churam View Point

The Pakranthalam Churam is a stunning view point located almost on the border of Wayanad and Calicut district of Kerala. One can get spectacular views of the surrounding dense forests, lush green mountains and some beautiful valleys on the plateau of Wayanad from this view point. And that is what makes it a must visit among the places to see in Wayanad.

Banasura Dam view point

If you ever searched on the internet for Wayanad, there is a 100% chance you have seen this drone shot of the beautiful Banasura Reserve in Wayanad from the Banasura Dam View Point. It is almost like the signature of Wayanad. And why not! The views of the region are so stunning from this view point, unlike any other place in Wayanad or in India that I have seen. Reminds me of the emerald lake in Ooty that we witnessed while staying at Destiny Farmstay in Ooty .

Banasura Lake – the best of the places to see in Wayanad

After viewing the Banasura Reserve from the Banasura View Point, I am sure no one can resist going down to the Banasura Lake. The Banasura Lake is one of the biggest lakes in Wayanad. A pristine lake with several small islands in between. Once again, I couldn’t help but draw comparison to the boating that we did in Rangnathittu Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka. There also, there were several islands in the river. And boating in such a setting is a different kind of experience altogether.

Wayanad tea museum

The tea of Wayanad is very famous. You will see a lot of lush green tea gardens just like how you see in Munnar, particularly in the south and west regions of Wayanad. So, it only makes sense to have a tea museum on the list of places to visit in Wayanad. The Wayanad Tea Museum south of Banasura region is a perfect place to learn the history of tea cultivation in Wayanad, along with a knowledge of the different tea species grown here. And take a virtual trip about how the tea cultivation has evolved in this region over a period of time.

Lakkidi view point – a must among places to see in Wayanad

Yet another beautiful view point located atop a plateau hill in the Lakkidi district is the Lakkidi view point in Wayanad. It gives a stunning view of the plateau far and wide. And one can see as far as across the border of the Wayanad district from here. As you move from Wayanad tea museum to Chembra Peak, you can stop at Lakkidi view point on the way. So, add it to your list of places to see in Wayanad.

Chembra Peak

The Chembra Peak is the highest peak of the Wayanad district. It is located at an elevation of 2100 meters above the sea level. It is also one of the most popular trekking areas in Wayanad. But if you want to go up there in a vehicle, you must have a jeep like vehicle as the path is not very even and well laid out. However, you reach the Chembra Peak, once there, you will be stunned by the mesmerizing views all around it.

Glass Bridge 900

Located in the Vayithri village of Wayanad, the glass bridge 900 is a glass bottom bridge as the name implies. And is a famous spot if you are looking at that little rush of adrenalin walking on a glass bottom bridge which feels like walking in the air.

Soochipara Waterfalls

The next stop on your list of places to see in Wayand is Soochipara Waterfalls. It is the only three tire waterfall in Wayanad district. I had visited a similar waterfall near Bangkok on my trip to Thailand . And one near Munnar in Kerala. Post monsoons when the volume of water is highest in the waterfalls, it makes for the best time to visit here. The waterfall is located in the middle of dense forests!!

Meenmutty water falls

Perhaps the most visited waterfall in the Wayanad district, the Banasuramala Meenmutty waterfalls is located very near to the Banasura Dam in the Banasura Reserve of Wayanad. Trekking through stone steps one can get upclose to this watefall. And post monsoons, the waterfalls assume enormous volume. so, undoubtably, that is the best time to visit here.

Edakkal caves – one of the best places to see in Wayanad

One of the many natural caves that you will find around Wayanad is Edakkal Caves. But what sets them apart is several carvings on the stones here and some paintings that are from the pre historic era. You can take several steps up to the caves to see the center of the cave. A complete Wayanad trip itinerary to explore the Wayanad district

Here’s a 6 days itinerary for Wayanad covering all the above mentioned places to visit in Wayanad. The itinerary can be broken into smaller ones, one for each region of Wayanad. And explored over 2-3 different weekends.

Day 1 : Exploring the Sulthan Bathery region

Start your trip by entering into Wayanad from Sulthan Bathery.  And continue north. Stop to visit the Bamboo Forest Park on the way. Then visit the Kuruvadweep next. Stay overnight near Kuruvadweep at Kuruva Island Resort or other nearby resort.

Day 2 : Exploring Manthanvaadi region

After breakfast, checkout from your resort in Kuruva Island region. On your way, your first stop is one of the wild life sanctuaries of North Wayanad. Stop for a safari in Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary or Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary . And then visit Thirunelli Temple next. After visiting the temple, stay overnight in a resort near the temple like Mayookham Resort .

Day 3 : Move towards west – central Wayanad in Manthanvaadi region

Post breakfast, checkout from the resort and continue towards  west – central Wayanad. Places to explore today include : Vilangad Water Falls, Mudikkal waterfalls and Pakranthalam Churam View Point in the same order. Stay overnight in the region in a resort like Wayanad Village Resort . You can either first go to the resort, dump your luggage and then go sightseeing. Or, you can first do the sightseeing and then finally reach the resort to stay overnight.

Day 4 : Move to Banasura Reserve – the most beautiful water reserve in Wayanad

Checkout from resort and visit the Banasura Dam area today. Top places to see  in this region include Banasuramala Waterfalls , Banasura Dam view point and Banasura Lake . After exploring these places, stay overnight in a resort that gives excellent views of the reservior. The whole reservior region is surrounded by luxury resorts. Banasura Hill Resort , Contour Island Resort or Mountain shadows resort and even Taj Wayanad are some famous names. Enjoy a beautiful and pampering stay in one of these resorts overnight.

Day 5: Move to Kalpetta, exploring further places to see in Wayanad on the way

Checkout from the resort post breakfast and proceed to Vayithri resort i n Kalpetta region, or, any other resort in the region. On the way today, you can stop at the Wayanad tea museum and Lakkidi view point – two of the top places to see in wayanad.

Day 6 : Kalpetta to Sulthan Bathery via several places to see in Wayanad

Today, post breakfast, checkout from your resort towards Sulthan Bathery. On the way visit Chembra Peak , Glass Bridge 900 , Soochipara Waterfalls , Meenmutty water falls and Edakkal caves . Stay overnight in Sultan Bathery in a humble homestay.

Day 7: Checkout from your accommodation and continue your journey back home.

Today will be the last day of your Wayanad trip itinerary. Post breakfast, you can checkout from your accommodation and drive home. You can stop for some shopping on the way back home from Sulthan Bathery. And carry some souveirs, and a lot of everlasting memories with you back home from your Wayanad trip.

Or, you could explore each of the above map areas on a separate trip if you live at a 5-6 hours driving distance from Wayanad like we do. Also, do note that the above only covers the top and famous places to see in Wayanad. General tips on visiting Wayanad

• Best time to visit Wayanad is from October – May . June – September are heavy rain months and hence it becomes difficult to reach several tourist spots in Wayanad around this time.
• There are 3 main regions of Wayanad, each one can be separately visited on micro weekend getaways from Bangalore.

Thinking how the words tree and chain came together and became a tourist attraction? Well, it is a magnificent fig tree tied by a long chain. The story of the place goes back to the 18th century. The then Viceroy announced a prize for a person who could find a way from Calicut to Wayanad through the Adivaram forest range. Kindly note Wayanad is a district where the entire tourist destinations are spread throughout its area, and, one would need proper planning and understanding of destinations in Wayanad to have a smooth sightseeing trip. At a distance of 5 km from After the Rains resort ,the Kanthanpara water falls is scenic and naturally blessed with a surrounding of evergreen forests. Best Places to Visit in Wayanad for 2 Days Trip

Wayanad is a special place in Kerala, known for its beautiful hills and lakes. It’s in the northeastern part of Kerala, which people often call “God’s Own Country.” Wayanad sits on top of the Deccan Plateau, making it even more scenic. This place has a lot of natural beauty that hasn’t been touched much by people. When you visit Wayanad, you’ll find many cool spots to see and enjoy, mixing both culture and nature.

Lakkidi View Point:

Lakkidi View Point is a famous spot for tourists, known as the “Gateway of Wayanad.” It’s up high and gives you a great view of the city. From there, you can see lovely hills, green valleys, and winding roads. You can enjoy the amazing sights all around Wayanad. Driving up to the viewpoint is fun. It’s best to visit Lakkidi View Point at sunrise or sunset for the most beautiful views.

Lakkidi view point timings and entry fee:   

You can visit Lakkidi View Point anytime during the day, but it’s suggested to go between 5 AM to 7 PM, especially in the winter months from November to February for the best views. It’s recommended to spend about half an hour there, and mornings and evenings are the most comfortable times. The best part is, there’s no entry fee, so everyone can visit for free whenever they like.

Pookode Lake:

Pookode Lake, also called Pookot Lake, is a pretty lake in Wayanad. It’s surrounded by green forests and the Western Ghats, making it a lovely place for anyone visiting Wayanad. Families often go there for a fun day out, to go boating, and to enjoy the calm atmosphere. You can relax and watch animals and birds from the nearby forests. The lake has lotus flowers and water lilies, and there’s also a freshwater aquarium, a park for kids, and a shop selling handmade crafts.

Pookode Lake Timings and Entry Fee:

Pookode Lake is open every day from 9 AM to 5 PM. Boating is also available during these hours, but the last entry for boating is at 4:30 PM. If you plan to go boating at Pookode Lake, it’s a good idea to arrive early. The lake welcomes visitors throughout the year.

Edakkal caves:

Visiting Edakkal Caves is like taking a trip back in time. They’re about 10 kilometers away from Sulthan Bathery. Legend says these caves were made when two brothers, Luv and Kush, shot arrows that split a big rock. The carvings inside are really old, from about 6000 BCE to 1000 BCE. They were discovered in the 1800s by a police officer named Fred Fawcett. There are lots of different carvings, showing that people lived there at different times. Some of the symbols haven’t been figured out yet. Around 400 carvings have been found, and some of them are connected to the Indus Valley civilization.

Eddakal caves timings and entry fees:

Edakkal Caves in Wayanad are open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM, except on Mondays and public holidays. They stay open all year, but might close during heavy rains, especially in the monsoon, for safety reasons. The entry fee is ₹50 per person, with extra charges for cameras and parking. If you prefer, there’s a jeep shuttle service available from the parking area to the ticket counter near the steps, costing ₹70 per person.

Phantom Rock:

Phantom Rock, also called Cheengeri Mala, is a rare sight in the world. It naturally looks like a skull, which is why it’s named Phantom Rock. Standing at 2600 meters above sea level, it’s surrounded by lush greenery. When you reach the top, you’ll see a beautiful view of the city blending into the colorful scenery of nature.

Phantom Rock timings and entry fees:

The place can be reached easily through well-kept roads, and the last 500 meters require a walk through a narrow lane, adding to the adventure for trekkers and hikers. It’s open from 9 AM to 5 PM, and there’s no charge for entry.

Neelima view point: 

Neelimala View Point is a popular place in Wayanad. It’s known for its amazing view of the Meenmutty Waterfalls and the beautiful mountains and valleys. You can easily reach there by road from Kalpetta Town on Ambalavayal Road. The hike to the viewpoint is just as lovely as the view. You’ll see lots of different plants and flowers, and you’ll smell the nice scent of coffee as you walk. Birds chirp happily and guide you along the way.

 Neelima view point timings and entry fee:

 Neelimala View Point is open from 9 AM to 5 PM. You can visit any time, but it’s most enjoyable during winter (from November to February) when the weather is pleasant. It’s best to plan for about 1-2 hours at the viewpoint. However, you must get permission from the forest department before your visit.

There’s no entry fee for Neelimala View Point, but you’ll need to pay ₹500 for a jeep ride. The jeep can accommodate 6-7 people at a time.

Kurumbala Kotta:

Kurumbalakotta is one of the prettiest spots in Kerala. It’s a big rock hill in Wayanad, standing at 3,220 feet above sea level. What makes it special is the amazing view it offers all around. From up there, you can see the whole of Wayanad, with misty mountains and valleys. People have been visiting Kurumbalakotta Hill as tourists since 2015. At first, it was mostly local people, but by 2018, visitors were coming from other parts of Kerala, from other states in India, and even from other countries around the world.

Kurumbala Kotta timings and entry fees:

Kurumbala Kotta welcomes visitors from 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM, with the ideal time to explore being from September to March. While trekking is enjoyable throughout the day, the cool weather in the early morning is preferred. There’s no entry fee, but amenities like tent stays are available from private vendors for a fee. Parking fees are ₹10 for two-wheelers and ₹30 for autos, cars, and jeeps.

Meenmutty Falls:

Meenmutty Waterfalls is a big and beautiful waterfall close to Banasura Sagar Dam in Kerala’s Wayanad district. It falls from a height of 950 feet and has three levels. You can stroll around 500 meters from the parking area or main entrance to reach the first level. This part is smaller and has a shallow pool perfect for swimming. To get to the second level, you’ll have to walk approximately 500 meters on steps built over large rocks. The pathway runs along the river, offering views of the flowing water and plenty of greenery. The third level is the most challenging, requiring some walking through the stream on slippery rocks with the assistance of ropes.

Meenmutty Waterfalls Timings and Entry Fee:

Meenmutty Waterfalls is open every day of the week from 9 AM to 5 PM. The entry fee for Indian visitors is Rs. 30 for adults and Rs. 15 for children. If you bring a camera, it’s an extra Rs. 75. For foreigners, the entry fee is Rs. 60 for adults, and there’s also a Rs. 75 camera fee.

Banasura Sagar Dam:

One of the most beautiful things you can see here is the group of islands in the reservoir behind the dam. These islands were made when the reservoir flooded the area around it during the rainy season. Seeing these islands with the Banasura hills in the background is a real treat for anyone who comes to visit the dam and the area around it.

Banasura Sagar Dam Timings and Entry Fee:

The dam is open every day, all year round, from 9 AM to 5 PM. Speed boating stops at 4 PM. For entry to Banasura Sagar Dam, adults pay ₹40 and kids pay ₹20. A shuttle ride to the top of the dam and back costs ₹15 for one way or ₹25 for both ways. There are additional charges for cameras and parking.

Speed boating costs ₹1000 for a ride with 5 people, while coracle riding costs ₹450 for a couple. Ziplining at Banasura Sagar Dam costs ₹300 per person.

Honey Museum:

The Honey Museum in Wayanad isn’t just any museum; it’s also a honey farm and a science museum that tourists love. Here, you can learn all about honey: its types, uses, benefits, and how bees make it. You will get to taste different kinds of honey and see how it’s processed. Then, you explore the museum where they explain the history of honey in detail with pictures and models. They also talk about the science behind it. You can buy various types of honey and honey products, all of excellent quality. It’s a must-visit place for anyone in the area.

Honey Museum timings and entry fees:

The Honey Museum in Wayanad charges a fee of Rs. 20 for adults. It’s open every day from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM, although public holidays could affect the schedule.

Wayanad tourism: Only a tip of the district was landslide-hit, but entire tourism industry affected

Kalpetta: Abandoned destinations, deadly silent resorts and homestays, hassle-free roads sans the usual hustle and bustle of vehicles and closed-down business establishments - the horror of the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslide still haunts the tourism industry of Kerala's Wayanad, which left thousands jobless. Though the direct impact of the disaster was limited to two tiny hamlets on the Western tip of Wayanad, the images of the horrific catastrophe that washed out parts of two villages along with 450 of its inhabitants still linger in the minds of people across geographical boundaries.  

Countless families living around the tourism destinations of Wayanad earn a living through allied tourism activities, such as trading indigenous food items and farm produce like spices and honey, selling curios, tourist guides, cleaning staff at tourism spots, local tour operators, and drivers of tourist taxis. While the state government hesitates to declare Wayanad a safe spot for tourists and travel operators and tourists are hesitant to embrace Wayanad post-landslide, the tourism industry continues to be a forsaken sector. Though the Onam season is around the corner, there is no euphoria anywhere, and a pall of gloom still rules at large.  

Major destinations still closed Only a few destinations have opened, and even in those, there is negligible footfall. The major destinations, Soochipara Waterfalls, Kuruva Islands, and Kanthanpara Waterfalls, and the wildlife safaris at Muthanga and Tholppetti, are still closed. The Edakkal Caves opened only on Friday. Only one or two tourists’ vehicles were seen, and a handful of tourists were found roaming. Among the odd 60-plus shops, only three were opened. “If things continue to be the same, we will be forced to take the extreme step as this is the only job we know”, said Rabiya, a native of Edakkal who is employed in a curio shop. Rabiya told Onmanorama that being a single mother with three children, they struggled to make two ends meet the last month. “Majority of the staff in the shops here are women who are not at all qualified for any other jobs”, she said.  

 “I am clueless about what to do”, said Vinod E P, who owns two curio shops at Edakkal Caves which have been closed since the landslide. “There are more than a hundred business establishments around the destination including farm stays, tiny juice shops, and plant nurseries, all of them are closed now”, he said. Though the number of tourists allowed into the cave was limited to just over 1900, during the season, more than 4000 tourists would reach the spot, and most of them would return without visiting the cave. Still, they would purchase curios and taste unique food varieties, and many used to have food from the ubiquitous women-run homely food courts attached to houses. The destination alone used to help up to 300 families eke out a living but now poses an abandoned look. 

On the way to Edakkal Caves, Santha and her daughter-in-law Sindhu, both members of a Kudumbasree unit, dust their restaurant and serve homely food to the tourists. “We used to serve sadya (traditional Kerala lunch) for the tourists”, Santha said.  Around ten women were engaged in running the hotel, which ensured them an additional income other than their routine agrarian jobs. “We hope by Onam things would change, and people would realize that the catastrophe had affected only the tip of Wayanad, and the rest of the Wayanad is still safe”, she added.

Hardly any tourists According to the data of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), at Pookkode Lake, the prime tourist destination that is still open, the average number of tourists has nosedived to an all-time low of 300 persons per day. During the peak of the season, up to 4000 tourists used to jostle each other at Pookkode.   More than 1000 taxi jeeps, cars, and auto-rickshaws were operating in the district, catering to the tourism industry, according to leaders of driver's unions.  More than 100 tourist taxis are enlisted at the ‘Spot Taxi Call Centre’ alone, catering exclusively to the tourism industry at Sulthan Bathery alone.  

Secretary of the ‘Call Taxi Center’ N Sajeev told Onmanorama that most of the vehicles are parked in the shed for the entire month as they are not getting even the diesel cost to take them to the taxi stand and back. “Till the disaster, though it was monsoon, we were comfortable as we had a money flow to make our two ends meet,” he added. Apart from this, in remote villages, at least two vehicles are attached to a tourism property, whether it is a resort, homestay, or serviced villa. These properties depend on the local vehicles as it would be tough for them to access taxis when they are in need.

Wayanad Tourism Organization (WTO) secretary CP Sailesh told Onmanorama that most resorts affiliated with the organisation are partially closed down as the post-landslide cancellations were almost cent per cent. “Most of them are struggling to meet the huge maintenance cost of the tourism properties”, he said, adding that the disaster with such a magnitude was a bolt from the blue for the industry, just climbing up from the abyss it had fallen during the Corona period.   “Most of us were forced to cut down the staff to reduce the operational costs”, he said.   Unlike in the past, when the top-notch properties were safe with sufficient guests, the current trend has a sweeping impact as all tourism properties are affected alike.  

“Even during the Corona days, we were in a better position”, said Roy Chacko, the marketing head of Vythiri Resort, the pioneers in the hospitality industry in Wayanad. “We have no other choice but to reach out to the travel buffs across the world with the message that Wayanad is safe and the disaster had struck only at a small part of the vast district”, he added. Last month, despite the heavy monsoon we managed to give the salary for the staff and also to meet the other expenses. “This month, there is no way out but to source a loan to meet the expenses”, said a resort owner who preferred anonymity. “Though I had told my staff that they are free to take leave, none of them are leaving as we ensure daily food for them here”, he added. “Taking leave means he has to meet the cost of his daily bread”, he pointed out.

However, the industry players are still hopeful that by Onam, they can come up, and the tourists would help them regain the lost glory of Wayanad. An array of promotional programmes has also been planned with the tagline ‘Wayanad is Safe’. Moves are also afoot to rope in the help of celebrities from film and sports to create awareness among tourists across borders that the entire Wayanad is not a trouble spot.

Those who lived to tell the tale recount watching friends and family members being swept away, the fury of the water and of their lives becoming a memory..

At the Meppadi relief camp in Kerala’s Wayanad, a 65-year-old man examined the basic mobile phone that had been handed to him by a rescue volunteer. “Muthachan [grandpa], are you happy?” asked the volunteer, hugging the man’s shoulders. “Got a new phone?”

“Five of my family members have disappeared. I don’t have my home anymore,” said the elderly man, too drained to show emotion. “Where should I go? What should I do now? I don’t know. What will this phone do for me?”

Shivan, a resident of Chooralmala, is among the 2,500 survivors of landslides that struck Wayand district. A downpour triggered landslides in the villages of Punchiri Mattom, Mundakkai, Chooralmala and Attamala on July 30, wreaking devastation in the region. Rainfall of up to 372 mm was recorded in Puthumala nearby on July 30.

At least 420 people were killed, with 118 missing – presumed dead now. According to Kerala’s State Emergency Operational Centre, 231 bodies and 212 body parts were recovered.

Five neighbouring families were swept away in the muddy torrent before Shivan’s eyes. “Our house’s foundation isn’t even visible anymore,” said Sasi. The house where his family of three had built a life, celebrated birthdays, laughed and cried was now just a memory.

A month since the disaster, the Kerala government is looking to build community townships close by for the survivors. Social workers and psychiatrists are working with survivors to heal the psychological scars of the incident.

But as this account of the first few days of the devastation shows, there is a calamitous toll in surviving a calamity and that some wounds may never heal.

An explosion

In the houses around Mundakkai and Chooralmala, filled with muddy debris, wall clocks are frozen between 1.45 am and 2.40 am – they are static witnesses to the devastation of that night.

Vijayan knew what a cloudburst sounded like: a bomb exploding and then the howl of a jet taking off faraway. He had heard it during the 2019 floods in Kerala when there had been a cloudburst near Puthumala, just 5 kilometres from his home Chooralmala.

On July 30, it was the same sound that woke him up. He heard the first cloudburst at around 1.30 am and stepped outside – a muffled whisper faraway was audible. Something was terribly wrong and he began shouting: “Run”.

Vijayan alerted the three neighbouring houses in Chooralmala. They knew that the first floods must have already affected houses downstream.

As ground-level houses began flooding, Vijayan and three others directed 18 of their family members, including Vijayan’s parents and sister, to the safety of his neighbour Ouseph Chettan’s house. Twenty two-people were sheltering in that one-storey home. By then the sound had gotten even more shrill, like an approaching aircraft.

In an instant, a surge of water hit the foundation of Chettan’s house, sloshing against the walls of the house. Children asleep were thrown against the walls before they could even open their eyes.

A bridge of saris

The torrential rainfall and the landslide higher up had hurled down mud and boulders, changing the course of the Iruvanjippuzha river . Chettan’s house was one of the few solid structures in Chooralmala that had so far withstood the two channels of the river in spate.

It was between 3.30 am and 4 am and it was pitch dark. The power had been cut and batteries had run out. The roof of Chettan’s was unstable, made up of asbestos sheets, leaving no place to climb to for safety. The group knew they had to escape before the next downpour or the water raging around them rose further.

Vijayan and a few friends tied together as many saris as they could gather from the local women. Twisting them into a strong rope, Vijayan waded into the slush, his feet sinking into the mud below.

He tied the makeshift rope to the pillar of Sudarshan’s home 100 metres away and returned. Then, he began to help people across, at times even carrying them, through chest-high muddy slush.

Three people crossed the water clinging to Vijayan’s shoulders, their eyes closed as they screamed in horror. Vijayan got 16 people to the safety of the neighbour’s house where they climbed up to the solid concrete roof.

Vijayan went back and forth like this until 5 am. Five others were left, including his mother, sister and the house owner.

But the neck-level muddy water was now carrying with it boulders and rocks and he could not return to Chettan’s home. Vijayan said his mother clung to a metal rod from the ceiling for at least an hour-and-a-half until she disappeared.

Two days later, Vijayan returned to the spot with rescuers and dug through the mud with bare hands, looking for his mother’s remains.

“We have experienced heavy rains throughout our lives and have faced every challenge they brought,” said Vijayan. “We fought and survived for generations. But this time, we couldn’t.”

Staring at the damaged house where 22 people lived just a day before, Vijayan clenched his teeth and fell silent. His mother’s bed was still in front of what used to be their house. Vijayan is convinced that she was buried in the house and not washed away. She was there till the very end calling for help, he said.

Two bodies, including that of his sister, were recovered a day later on July 31. The house owner’s body was found near Pothukal village in Nilambur, 30 km downstream from Chooralmala. In Nilambur, along the Chaliyar river, more than 95 bodies or body parts were found on the first day of the floods. The bodies of the remaining three, including Vijayan’s mother, sheltering in Chettan’s house were never found.

Reliving a disaster

Like Vijayan, for those who survived the 2019 Puthumala floods, the landslide in July felt like they were reliving the disaster. In Mundakkai village, many fled their homes, leaving everything behind, as soon as they heard the cloudburst.

“We know the sound of a cloud burst – a bomb explosion,” said Nooruddin, a panchayat member of Meppadi and a survivor of the Puthumala landslide in 2019. Nooruddin had shifted to Mundakkai village after losing his house in Puthumala.

Many made frantic calls to relatives and friends living in Chooralmala, downstream. “We all started running uphill and my son-in-law in Chooralmala picked up the call by the third ring,” said Nooruddin. “I spoke to him, hardly for 10 seconds, and he went to open the door by which time water was reaching his waist.”

As the rainfall and landslides altered the course of the river, worsening the situation, the residents of Mundakkai ran as high as possible on the hill where they lived. They watched as their homes were engulfed by water and battered by rocks. The rocks, dislodged by the landslide and rain, had rolled down as far as 8km, some the size of two-storey buildings.

Nooruddin and his family and neighbours in Mundakkai survived. His timely phone call to relatives in Chooralmala saved them too.

Natives and migrants

Chooralmala and Mundakkai no longer exist as they did – they are altered forever. But they were popular and busy tourist destinations, drawing visitors and workers from various states. Chooralmala was a medley of diverse linguistic backgrounds.

The devastation that locals and the migrant workers suffered varied depending on where they lived. The locals who lived closer to the centre of Chooralmala and Mundakkai, bore the brunt of landslides.

The managers and labourers who worked on the tea estates in the region lived on the fringes of these farms in makeshift houses, locally known as “paady”, made of mud walls and local roof tiles or asbestos. They were affected more by the floodwater than landslides. Two migrant workers were killed and three others were missing. But more than 300 workers have been displaced , according to a nonprofit that works for the benefit of migrant workers.

Migrant workers may return once again. But many residents of Punchiri Mattam, Mundakkai, Attamala and Chooralmala have lost entire families – and everything. Those luckier may have had one or two family members survive to share their sorrows for the rest of their lives.

“I lost my house, car, shop and everything we owned,” said a resident of Chooralmala, who is sheltering at a government school relief camp in Meppadi with his wife and daughter. His parents, who were wounded by flowing rocks, have been hospitalised. “We have nothing left except the clothes on our bodies.”

Some narrowly escaped with their lives, like Arun, who was found half a kilometre downstream from his house, near the Vellarmala School ground, frantically waving his hands from neck-deep mud. He was rescued nine hours after the landslides struck.

Smoke and clouds

While walking in Meppadi on August 2, three days after the disaster, ambulance after ambulance drove by carrying the deceased wrapped in plastic and white cloth from government hospitals and crematorium. By evening, the pungent smell of burning flesh mixed with coconut oil filled the air. It took a few seconds to separate the moving clouds in the hills from the smoke of burning bodies. The bodies that had been identified, and in some cases, just the body parts, were being cremated.

An elderly man, who worked as a shopkeeper in Chooralmala for most of his life and moved down to Meppadi five years ago, said five neighbouring families were killed. “Today, my friends and neighbours from Chooralmala are among the 30 bodies being cremated,” he said.

Floating clouds bring down rain every 10 minutes, drenching the tea gardens in a fine mist. It is a mesmerising sight, a picture-perfect holiday. The lush green Western Ghats are beautiful as they are devastating.

In Wayanad, the hills will come down the river again – like they have in the past – erasing everything in their path. As survivors, we must decide whether to persist in our destructive ways or heed nature’s warnings and learn to coexist harmoniously.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, on Sunday made an appeal for Wayanad, which recently witnessed massive landslides that killed over 400 people . The Congress leader emphasised that the tragedy affected only a part of the district and that Wayanad remains a beautiful tourist destination, encouraging people to visit.

Rahul Gandhi represented Wayanad in the Lok Sabha from 2019 to 2024. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress leader again won from the Wayanad constituency but chose to retain his alternative seat, Rae Bareli .

He made the appeal during a virtual meeting with some Congress leaders from Kerala and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who is set to contest the bypoll from the constituency .

In a social media post sharing a video of the meeting, Rahul Gandhi said it is imperative to make a concerted effort to revitalise tourism in Wayanad.

“It is important to note that the landslide was localised to a specific area in Wayanad, not the entire region. Wayanad remains a stunning destination and will soon be ready to welcome tourists from across India and the world with all its natural charm,” he said.

The Congress MP noted that the tourism sector is a key area that would be pivotal in rebuilding the lives of people in the northern Kerala district.

In the meeting, Rahul Gandhi enquired the Congress leaders about the status of relief and rehabilitation work in Wayanad, and they informed him about various necessities, including housing, jobs, livelihood options, and mental support, among others.

After listening to the leaders, he said, "There are four-five things we need to put pressure on - inter-departmental coordination on relief and rehabilitation, inadequate compensation, rent issue that I have raised, many people have lost livelihood, and finally the impact on tourism.

"While there is still much to be done, it is heartening to witness people from all communities and organisations coming together in relief efforts," he wrote on X.

Gandhi stressed, "As we have done in the past, let us come together once again to support our brothers and sisters in beautiful Wayanad”.

Three Tourist Places In Wayanad Reopened With Restrictions

If you're making travel plans, there's good reason to put Wayanad back in your bucket list. After being off the tourist's radar due to the massive landslides, the state govt. is putting effort into reviving the sought-after destination by reopening the earlier-shut spots. The most recent ones that have been made accessible to tourists are Mananthavady Pazhassi Park, the Edakkal Caves, and Pancharakolli Priyadarshini. These spots were earlier shut for tourists due to dangers posed by heavy rainfall. Other attractions in Wayanad that were reopened in August include Pookode Lake, Karalad Lake, Pazhassi Memorial at Pulpalli Mavilamthod, Bathery Town Square and Ambalavayal Heritage Museum.

Restrictions In Place

These tourist attractions in Wayanad have been made accessible after seeking permission from the disaster management committee to ensure tourists' safety. Other top attractions in Wayanad that are yet to be opened are the Kuruva Islands and Cheengeri Mountains.

While these top tourist attractions in Wayanad are accessible again, the authorities have put restrictions in place to ensure tourists remain safe. These measures include capping the number of visitors allowed to these tourist sites. For instance, only up to 1,920 visitors would be allowed entry into the Edakkal Caves, which have been flagged safe for visitors to enjoy.

Other Tourist Attractions Await Decision

The locals and tourist operators are hoping that other popular tourist attractions in Wayanad will also be reopened soon, ahead of Onam. These tourist attractions include eco-tourism centres, such as Tholpetti Wildlife Sanctuary, Brahmagiri Trekking Centre, Soochipara Waterfalls, Meenmutti Waterfalls, Chembra Peak, Muneeshwaran Hills and the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. The shutdown of these tourist attractions has severely affected footfall in the region, causing operators, taxi stand owners and guides dismay.

Two locations finalised to construct township for Wayanad landslides survivors: Kerala minister

Three villages – punchirimattam, chooralmala and mundakkai – of the scenic tourist destination district were completely wiped out in the massive disaster that took place on july 30, claiming more than 200 lives..

The Kerala government has finalised two locations to construct a ‘community living’ style township for the victims of the Wayanad landslides disaster , minister K Rajan said on Friday.

Three villages – Punchirimattam, Chooralmala and Mundakkai – of the scenic tourist destination district were completely wiped out in the massive disaster that took place on July 30, claiming more than 200 lives. “We have identified Kottappadi and Kalpetta as the two sites where those affected by the landslides will be completely rehabilitated in a community living-style township,” Rajan told PTI during an interview here.

We are not just looking at rehabilitating the survivors by providing them homes but also aim to ensure a “holistic” life for them with jobs and education, he said at his office in the Kerala Secretariat. Kottappadi is about 11 kilometres from the disaster site, while Kalpetta – the district headquarters of Wayanad – is about 35 kilometres away.

The minister said the townships will be developed with the idea that these will not just be houses but complete amenity areas, including a hospital, public facilities, community centre, primary schools, etc. According to official data, a total of 448 bodies and body parts have been recovered so far, of which 178 have been identified. No one has survived in 17 families comprising 58 persons in total.

The Kerala government has housed all the survivors in state-run hostels and buildings and for those living in alternate private accommodations, it is paying the rent. Some people are staying with their kin, officials said. “I have never seen such a tragedy in my 50 years of life. I cannot fathom the pain that the people of Wayanad have gone through,” the minister said. He added that experts have informed him that the two deadly landslides were triggered at a height of 1,782 feet on the fateful day, leading to a heavy flow of water gushing down the Gayathri river, carrying large stones, tree trunks and gravel downstream into the affected villages.

Rajan was among the four cabinet ministers’ sub-committee that mobilised as soon as the tragedy struck, initiating relief and rescue operations. The minister camped at the incident area for 24 days beginning July 30.

The minister said that the government has also “decided” to continue paying the rent for those living in private accommodations, while jobs will be ensured for the affected locals of these three villages and adjoining areas who have been displaced from their homes and livelihoods due to the landslides. “This support will continue for a long time and we are determined to do that,” he said.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has told an all-party meeting on Thursday about his government’s plan to construct 1,000 square feet single-storey houses, with the option to expand to two storeys, for the affected families.

Asked about the rescue operations, Rajan said the teams were operating in a three-stage structured format where the “first priority” of the rescuers was to evacuate the people who were alive at the landslides-hit site, followed by rushing them to the hospitals and after all this they were directed to look for the dead.

“Necessity is the mother of invention. The Army had erected the Bailey bridge over the Gayathri river and that gave great speed to rescue operations. Till that time, a temporary bridge of wood tied with coir ropes was installed by us leading to the rescue of 500 persons,” he said.

Referring to the notings he made during the ground operations, the minister said 500 ambulances were lined up at Wayanad, with 200 in active duty to rush the injured, while 300 were kept on standby. The ambulances were pooled in from neighbouring districts of Kozhikode and Malappuram and even from Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad apart from those sent in by voluntary organisations, Rajan said.

“We rescued all the survivors within 24 hours of the tragedy. The operations to find the mortal remains never stopped, even in the night, as we brought in 30 floodlights and restored electricity in the area within 20 hours,” he said.

A total of 1,472 rescuers from the Army, NDRF, SOG of Kerala, local police, fire and rescue and civil defence were divided into 18 teams that scoured a radius of 50-60 kilometres region apart from eight other teams that scanned the Chaliyar river bank for 45 kilometres under eight police station areas, he said.

The river search teams comprised rescuers from the Navy, Coast Guard, state forest department, local police and volunteers, the minister added. Each of the 40 teams, the minister said, was led by a group leader, armed with a common group calling mobile phone, three earth movers, a set of heavy metal cutting machines, three stretchers and 20 volunteers.

About 5,000 meal packets were prepared thrice each day for the rescuers, survivors and other administrative staff engaged in the rescue works, Rajan said.
