Pennsylvania is home to some of the nation’s most iconic sites (the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall in Philadelphia, to name a few), but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. America’s fifth-most populous state covers around 46,000 square miles and is chock-full of must-visit destinations — all of which make for ideal weekend trips. From an all-inclusive spa resort tucked in the Pocono Mountains to a trendy boutique hotel surrounded by farmland to one of the best hotels in metropolitan Philadelphia , here are the best weekend getaways in Pennsylvania for all types of travelers, be it wellness-seeking couples, adventure-loving families, and more.

The Wilbur Lititz

“I recently visited Lititz, Pennsylvania, and was so impressed with this little gem of a town,” says Pennsylvania-based travel advisor Alli Kozloff . When it comes to accommodations, Kozloff recommends reserving a room at The Wilbur , which serves as a hip home base for exploring the charming small town in the heart of Lancaster County. She goes on to describe the hotel — a former chocolate factory — as a “noteworthy attraction” in and of itself since it “showcas[es] its rich history through intricate details and decor.” Industrial-chic rooms have exposed brick and expansive windows to provide plenty of natural light. A handful of noteworthy mom-and-pop restaurants, including Tomato Pie Cafe and Bulls Head Public House , are within walking distance.

River House at Odette’s, New Hope

Courtesy of River House at Odette's

Located along the Delaware River, the aptly named River House at Odette’s offers cozy vibes all year long. Guest rooms and suites — many with private balconies — are outfitted with plush linens and fluffy duvets ideal for snuggling up, while bold murals, tufted leather headboards, and jewel-toned accents add a chic touch. The common areas, including an elegant eatery, swanky piano lounge, and buzzy rooftop bar, are equally stylish. Be sure to carve out enough time to explore New Hope 's budding arts and culture scene. Don’t miss the New Hope Arts Center , where you’ll find several outdoor sculptures and indoor exhibitions showcasing an array of modern works. The picturesque town also boasts an abundance of boutiques, antique shops, and restaurants, including The Salt House, which serves pub fare inside a fairy-tale-worthy stone building from 1751. Meanwhile, outdoor enthusiasts can spend their days hiking or biking (the hotel has its own fleet of custom bikes).

The Lodge at Glendorn, Bradford

Courtesy of The Lodge at Glendorn

“I'm enamored with The Lodge at Glendorn ,” says Kozloff, who spent some time there this summer. According to her, the 1,500-acre property feels “like a step back in time with all the comforts of modern luxury.” Expect a wide variety of activities, including fly fishing, cross-country skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, and off-roading. Alternatively, sign up for a cooking class or hit the spa for a well-deserved massage. All of the accommodations here exude rustic charm, and a majority take the form of stand-alone cabins, which, per Kozloff, “are equipped to accommodate large families or couples seeking privacy.” (Tip: Spring for one with an en-suite fireplace to make your stay all the more special.) Guests also enjoy amenities like chef-prepared breakfasts, 18 miles of trails, and fun events such as yoga classes and bonfires with s’mores and microbrews. While the expansive property is a destination in and of itself, Kozloff notes that the town of Bradford is rich in history as well. Must-visit attractions include Thunder Rocks and Kinzua Bridge State Park .

The Industrialist Hotel, Autograph Collection, Pittsburgh

Azeez Bakare Studios

Known for its sports teams, steel bridges, and burgeoning food scene, Pittsburgh makes for a great weekend getaway . Next time you find yourself in Pennsylvania’s second-largest city, consider a stay at The Industrialist Hotel, Autograph Collection . The property opened in 2021 and occupies a historic 18-story building in the city’s Central Business District. As an homage to the city’s history, the entire hotel is outfitted with industrial-inspired decor (arched windows, metal chandeliers) as well as striking elements that feel reminiscent of a bygone era (marble walls, black-and-white tiled floors, elaborate gold railings). Accommodations are sleek, with a monochrome color palette, leather accents, and abstract art. Guests and locals alike can be found noshing at the buzzy all-day bar and restaurant, Rebel Room, while the lobby bar and fireplace-equipped lounge is a popular spot for people-watching while sipping cocktails.

Seven Springs Mountain Resort, Seven Springs

Courtesy of Seven Springs Mountain Resort

“ Seven Springs Mountain Resort is a ski lover's paradise,” says Pennsylvania-based travel advisor Christina O'Toole of Travel in Luxury , an affiliate of Avenue Two Travel (a Virtuoso agency). However, it offers plenty to do year-round, too — zipping down the alpine slide, horseback riding, or scaling the 24-foot-tall rock wall. After a day of adventure, retreat to the Trillium Spa, where treatments range from hot stone massages to caviar facials. Then, head to one of the resort restaurants, including Helen's, which comes highly recommended by O'Toole for its “lively atmosphere.” It’s also worth noting that Seven Springs is just 60 miles from Pittsburgh.

Glasbern, Fogelsville

The quaint village of Fogelsville — a suburb of Allentown — puts you within close proximity of the region’s best wineries, antique shops, and historic attractions. You’ll also find the Glasbern hotel, a former working farm, here. A stay at this 150-acre adults-only hotel — which spans pristine ponds, rolling hills, restored cottages, and converted barns — feels like a trip back in time. Accommodations are packed with historic charm thanks to rustic plank flooring, exposed beams, and cathedral-style ceilings. For a splurge, opt for a suite with a whirlpool tub, fireplace, or private outdoor patio where you can bask in the postcard-worthy surroundings. Before heading off to explore, enjoy a made-to-order breakfast featuring locally grown and sourced ingredients; otherwise, stick around to enjoy a rejuvenating spa treatment (lemongrass massages, anyone?).

The Lodge at Woodloch, Hawley

Courtesy of Lodge at Woodloch

“Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, The Lodge at Woodloch is one of Pennsylvania's best spa destinations,” says Kozloff. O’Toole echoes this sentiment, describing the adults-only all-inclusive resort as a “stylish retreat [that] will delight your senses.” The property is spread across 500-plus acres of pristine woodland and offers gourmet cuisine, workshops, cooking classes, and dozens of health- and wellness-centric activities (hiking, yoga, meditation, pickleball, journaling, farm tours, and so much more). Out-of-the-box offerings include fire making, sound baths, and fly casting. However, the true star of the show is, of course, the award-winning spa facilities, which are free to all guests and feature several serene lounges, pools (including an outdoor infinity-edge whirlpool overlooking the towering trees), a snow room, and a Himalayan salt sauna. Last but not least are the recently renovated rooms and suites with private balconies facing the lake or rock garden, oversized marble showers, and contemporary decor.

Woodloch Resort, Hawley

Just down the road from The Lodge at Woodloch is its family-friendly sibling property, which is also all-inclusive. This year-round resort is home to more than 160 rooms and suites with rustic sleepaway camp vibes (light wooden furnishings, plaid curtains) plus private balconies or patios. Additionally, there are more than 30 activities to choose from, including archery, bumper cars, a climbing wall, disc golf, ice skating, and tennis. Meanwhile, meals are served in one of three dining rooms and offer something for both kids and adults (think: cider-braised pork with sweet potato mash for mom and dad and chicken tenders for little ones). Although you may be tempted to stay on property for the duration of your trip, Kozloff recommends taking some time to explore the nearby art galleries and boutiques for a “taste of local culture and craftsmanship.” Similarly, while the food here is delicious, Kozloff suggests having at least one meal at the historic, locally loved Settlers Inn or The Dock on Wallenpaupack , which offers picturesque lake views.

Cork Factory Hotel, Lancaster

“Most people associate Lancaster with Amish country, and horses and buggies are a common sight. However, Lancaster has undergone a bit of a resurgence in the last few years,” says Philadelphia-based travel advisor Jennifer Schwartz , who notes the Cork Factory Hotel as an excellent example of this. The 19th-century buildings that now make up this contemporary hotel once housed the Armstrong Cork Company. In addition to “minimalist decor contrasted with the punchy red brick walls,” design touches include original brick interiors and exposed wood ceilings. Don’t miss Cork & Cap, the dinner-only restaurant with plush leather banquettes, a rustic bar, a seasonal outdoor patio, and brick and stone walls for a rural, old-timey feel. The food and drink scene is strong off property, too: “Don’t miss Luca and Bar 1888 ,” says Schwartz. According to her, Lancaster is also home to one of the nation's oldest indoor farmers markets, Lancaster Central Market. Meanwhile, beer aficionados can sample some of the region’s best brews via the Lancaster Ale Trail .

Nemacolin, Farmington

Courtesy of Nemacolin

“For a resort-style getaway just 90 minutes from Pittsburgh, Nemacolin takes the cake,” says Schwartz, who also calls out the property’s “choose-your-own-adventure vibe and notable spa and wellness program.” She adds, “The activities are endless, and what makes Nemacolin so unique is the variety of options.” This includes a private ski slope, a bowling alley, a field club for hunting, fly fishing, clay shooting, archery, an equestrian facility, and two golf courses. Additionally, as part of the Wildlife Adventures program, visitors can see sheep, tigers, lions, wolves, and more. And when it comes to accommodations, keep in mind that Nemacolin is comprised of five distinct hotels, including the all-suite Grand Lodge (set to open in November). While you may be tempted to spend all your time on property, Holmes recommends venturing 20 minutes north to visit Fallingwater , a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home that’s now a National Historic Landmark.

The Hotel Hershey, Hershey

Courtesy of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts

Hershey is best known as the home of Hersheypark , which attracts families from all over the country in search of a sweet time. O’Toole recommends staying at The Hotel Hershey . The 276-room property — the city’s most luxurious — offers elegant accommodations and activities ranging from hiking to chocolate bingo. After visiting the bustling theme park, unwind with a stroll through the 23-acre Hershey Gardens. Alternatively, head to the Chocolate Spa, where treatments include a whipped cocoa bath, chocolate bean polish, or cocoa facial. Should you need a break from all that chocolatey goodness, head to one of the on-site restaurants, including Trevi 5 (for modern Italian cuisine) or Harvest (for mouthwatering American fare). End the night at Iberian Lounge , where you'll have access to an extensive menu of chocolate cocktails and 100-plus whiskeys from around the world.

Omni Bedford Springs Resort, Bedford

Omni Hotels & Resorts

About 110 miles from Pittsburgh lies the beloved spa town of Bedford, home to the sprawling Omni Bedford Springs Resort . According to Kozloff, the historic hotel has “been a favored destination” among travelers since its inception in 1806. (Fun fact: it has hosted 13 U.S. presidents.) O’Toole also loves this resort, telling T+L, “You can hear the history in the walls and rooms.” Both advisors are quick to call out the award-winning spa, famous for its mineral pools. Beyond that, O’Toole says, “Families will love the outdoor fire pits and lawn activities.” Golfers, meanwhile, can tee off at one of the country’s first courses before retreating to their lavish room or suite, which features a private balcony for taking in the serene surroundings. The town of Bedford itself is also rich in history: Visit the Fort Bedford Museum , check out one of the region’s 14 covered bridges, or indulge in the local food scene at restaurants like Horn O Plenty and Jean Bonnet Tavern — both come highly recommended by Kozloff.

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia, Philadelphia

Courtesy of Four Seasons Resorts

Schwartz describes this luxury property as “Philadelphia's crown jewel” thanks to its rooftop infinity pool, gorgeous rooms, and swanky bar, SkyHigh, which she calls “the hottest bar in the city.” The property is located on the top floors of the iconic Comcast Center, so you can expect postcard-worthy city vistas from all angles. Even better, you don't have to get out of bed to bask in the views as rooms and suites offer floor-to-ceiling windows. The centrally located property is also near some of the city’s best museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Rodin Museum . As for the city’s dining scene , Schwartz says it's “endless and ever-changing. “The hot spots are Zahav , Irwin’s , Pizzeria Beddia , Via Locusta , and The Love .” Can’t snag a reservation? Take it easy at the hotel and dine at one of the two on-site restaurants: Jean-Georges Philadelphia or Vernick Fish .

Hotel Rock Lititz, Lititz

Courtesy of Hotel Rock Lititz

Hotel Rock Lititz is a favorite of Philadelphia-based travel advisor Allison Holmes , who says the property “tends to fly more under the radar.” It’s located on the campus of Rock Lititz , a major rehearsal and entertainment production facility. (Some of the biggest names in music — Taylor Swift, U2, Ariana Grande, and Aerosmith — have all visited and worked with the crew here.) The hotel is noteworthy in its own right, too, with effortlessly cool interiors (including an indoor-outdoor lounge with a fireplace, a pool table, and comfy couches), a sleek indoor pool area, and a buzzy all-day eatery. For a fun excursion, Holmes recommends renting a bike from Lititz Bikeworks and visiting Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery , the country’s oldest pretzel bakery. Finally, retreat to your room or suite, all with farm views and some with bonus features like kitchenettes and handmade coffee tables.

Hotel Fauchère, Milford

Courtesy of Hotel Fauchere

The splendid small town of Milford is perched along the Delaware River in the Pocono Mountains, near the borders of New Jersey and New York. It’s also home to famous attractions like the Grey Towers National Historic Site and The Columns Museum of the Pike County Historical Society , which is where you’ll find the American flag used to cushion Lincoln’s head after he was shot. Stay in the heart of town at the historic 1852-era Hotel Fauchère , situated inside a three-story Italianate-style building with 16 rooms and suites. Grab a drink or meal out on the expansive covered porch where prime people-watching opportunities abound. Just a few steps away, you’ll find a handful of eclectic shops, including BetterWorld , Willow , and Broad Street Trading Post .

There are plenty of amazing weekend getaways in Pennsylvania to explore.

Here are 19 weekend getaways in PA that we know you and your crew will adore.

WHEN YOU’RE ESCAPING TO EXPLORE

19 AMAZING WEEKEND GETAWAYS IN PA YOU'LL LOVE

Known for its idyllic pastures, Southern Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County is easy to fall in love with, especially if you’re craving a change of pace. Lancaster is the heart of Amish Country, preserving timeless tradition, simpler ways of life and the history of a community with deep ties to the region.

Surrounded by Amish homesteads and historic sites, the town of Lancaster is your headquarters for exploring the region; contemporary eateries, museums and quaint shops buzz with life, while venturing just a few minutes outside of town transports you back in time.

The Lancaster Science Factory, Lancaster Museum of Art and the Amish Village are not to be missed; put the nearby town of Strasburg on your list as well, especially if you love railroad history and strolling down a good old Main Street. Philadelphia, Baltimore and Wilmington all make an easy day trip from the Lancaster area.

Nothing brings out the child in you better than a visit to the Sweetest Place on Earth, especially when combined with the craft breweries, local eats and history lessons the town of Hershey has to offer.

Hersheypark is undoubtedly the area’s biggest draw, upholding Milton S. Hershey’s 1906 vision of an ultimate leisure park serving generations of Americans. These days, “leisure” translates to candy-themed roller coasters, water rides, and the opportunity to make your own chocolate concoctions, at least in this beloved pocket of southeastern Pennsylvania.

Staying in town doesn’t have to be entirely about the rides, either; the Hershey Trolley Works, Hershey Story Museum and the Hershey Theater introduce visitors to a trove of town history that made it the iconic destination it is today. Nearby Harrisburg, Lancaster and Reading are within easy reach from Hershey, and Philadelphia is less than two hours away.

Watching over Pennsylvania’s sliver of Great Lakes waterfront, Erie is a Pennsylvania favorite with a unique history that sets it apart from the state’s other industrial-era boomtowns. Encompassing a peninsula jutting out into Lake Erie, Presque Isle State Park is the city’s defining natural element, featuring lakeside beaches and a historic lighthouse.

Downtown Erie, which sits just across Presque Isle Bay, is home to the Erie Art Museum, a Children’s Museum, and historic sites like Fort Presque Isle. Amateur historians will appreciate the city’s Maritime Museum and the US Brig Niagara, re-constructed in homage to a crucial War of 1812 flagship. In the evening, head to Presque Isle to take in the sunset, or wind down by enjoying Downtown Erie’s nightlife, bars and restaurants.

BUCKS COUNTY

Sitting comfortably between Philadelphia and Trenton, Pennsylvania’s Bucks County is a history hub steeped in small town charm.

Overlooking the Delaware River, the county’s southern edge played a crucial role during the American Revolution; Washington Crossing Historic Park memorializes the general’s famed river crossing and ensuing battle just south of New Hope. Other notable sites in the area include Fonthill Castle, a mansion-turned-museum, and Peddler’s Village, a complex featuring specialty shopping, eateries, a vintage carousel, and old-fashioned buildings, all connected within a network of walking paths.

If you are visiting Philadelphia and want to spend a day or two outside of the city, creating your own itinerary throughout Bucks County is part of the fun. Doylestown, Bristol, New Hope and Newtown are all within easy driving distance of one another, and each community has something to bring to the table.

Main Street charm, local businesses and seasonal events are a given, especially if you visit on a busy weekend. While it’s possible to tour the best of the county in one day, planning a Bucks County overnight gives you enough time to take advantage of its attractions at a pace fit for the countryside.

THE POCONOS

A little under two hours from both New York City and Philadelphia, The Pocono Mountains , or the Poconos, are a well known respite, popular with urban dwellers who are just plain tired of it all. While not as towering as the Adirondacks or as iconic as the Appalachians, the Poconos are a beloved local destination with plenty of natural wonder to offer.

Running along the Delaware Water Gap to the east and bordering towns like Stroudsburg and Mt. Pocono to the west, the Poconos are an all year destination, with winter sports taking over the schedule once the weather turns. Camelback Mountain, Big Boulder and Blue Mountain Resort are just a few of the region’s ski areas, drawing visitors from around the Northeast.

In the spring and summer, the range offers summit hikes with expansive views of the Delaware River, forested trails and plenty of lake access. Local Lake Wallenpaupack is one of Pennsylvania’s largest lakes and one of the Poconos’ most worthwhile swimming destinations. Once summer comes to a close, fall foliage brightens up the slopes, making even a short drive through the mountains a scenic byway.

Whether you rent a cozy waterfront cabin, stay at a top-tier ski resort or spend the night under the stars, the Poconos are not to be missed, especially if you’re looking for an alternative to city streets.

PHILADELPHIA

Undoubtedly one of the most vibrant cities on the Eastern seaboard, Philadelphia is the kind of urban destination you can get to know over a long weekend — or spend weeks delving into.

The city’s wealth of colonial history is a bucket list must-see, starting with the Liberty Bell. While many of us have a basic understanding of the bell’s significance thanks to history class, seeing the artifact and its iconic crack in person is a lasting experience. Philadelphia’s Old City is also home to Independence Hall, the grave of Benjamin Franklin, the Museum of the American Revolution, and centuries of governing history.

From the Old City district, it’s an easy walk to some of Philly’s quintessential attractions. Don’t miss the city’s Magic Gardens, a whimsical gallery and sculptural showcase turning ordinary building walls into works of art. Counting over 100 years of buying, selling and trading ,the Reading Terminal Market is another necessary stop, especially if you’re a fan of specialty groceries and local wares.

Heading west from Central City, you’ll find a number of museums lining the banks of the Schuylkill River, including the world famous Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Rodin Museum. If you have time for an additional day of museum-hopping, the Mutter Museum of medical history and the archaeology-focused Penn Museum are exceptional as well.

Philadelphia is the perfect headquarters for exploring nearby cities like Wilmington, Delaware or venturing out as far as Valley Forge Historical Park, or even the Jersey Shore. If you’re craving nature but have limited time, there are plenty of green oases in town as well, including the Morris Arboretum and Fairmount Park.

Philly’s nightlife and restaurant scene makes it easy to spend an entire day immersing yourself in museum galleries, colonial architecture and quaint neighborhoods, before letting loose downtown as the sun goes down.

Located clear on the other side of the state, Pittsburgh is Philadelphia’s somewhat calmer counterpart, boasting a long industrial history, and plenty of contemporary attractions that cement its place on any Pennsylvania itinerary.

Overlooking not one, but three major rivers, the city’s walkable downtown district makes it easy to walk along the water, grab lunch locally and peruse the art collection at the Andy Warhol Museum. The Pittsburgh Children’s Museum, Allegheny Commons Park, and the impressive National Aviary are just north of the city’s portion of the Allegheny River.

West of the city’s center, explore the Carnegie Museum of Art’s vast collection of creative work before taking an afternoon stroll to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Along with the rest of Schenley Park, the museum and gardens are an all-day activity best paired with dinner and a drink downtown.

Blending new initiatives and a significant industrial-era legacy, Pittsburgh offers a warm welcome to anyone looking to experience Pennsylvania in a new light. The city is actually closer to Cleveland than it is to Philadelphia, meaning you can easily plan a getaway incorporating both Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

If you’re looking for the ultimate historic destination, Gettysburg is your gateway to all things Civil War, including lesser known stories from the turbulent period in the nation’s history.

Gettysburg National Military Park is the town’s first and foremost attraction, offering tours and visitor access to battle lands, monuments and a museum dedicated to preserving the pivotal site. The park is best explored over the course of two days to allow ample time for taking in all of its elements.

Back in town, take a day or two to visit smaller, more focused museums like the Jennie Wade House and Shriver House Museum, both of which shine a light on civilian life during the war. Artifacts, displays and the historic homes themselves put visitors in the shoes of those who attempted to lead normal lives while the war was underway.

While in Gettysburg, don’t miss your chance to learn about local lore through a paranormal lens. Taking a ghost tour through town reminds you of forgotten sites, stories and secrets, all under the watchful eye of an expert guide. Equal parts truth, theater and thrill, a Gettysburg ghost tour is a memorable way to take in the atmosphere as night falls and traditional museums close their doors. A number of local companies offer unique spins on this tiny town’s huge history.

Best combined with a weekend in nearby Hershey, Harrisburg is a memorable stop thanks to its treasure trove of state history.

As Pennsylvania’s state capital, the city has a number of museums, making it a perfect destination for both art and history lovers. Notable institutions include the Susquehanna Art Museum, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum, all within easy walking distance of one another.

Like many of Pennsylvania’s busier cities, Harrisburg is perched over a picturesque river and has a walkable waterfront. Departing from City Island, the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat invites visitors for old-fashioned cruises on the river, an idyllic way to spend a slow afternoon in a city that feels more like a small town.

Located just under an hour from Allentown, and an hour and a half from Philadelphia, the small town of Jim Thorpe is an unassuming destination with plenty to offer, including cultural sites and nearby hiking trails.

Named after an accomplished Native American athlete, and boasting a rich history dating back to the heyday of Pennsylvania’s coal mining industry, the town is a museum lover’s dream. The Mauch Chunk Museum & Cultural Center, Old Jail Museum, Asa Packer Mansion and Stabin Museum of art are all located along West Broadway, the town’s main drag.

When you’ve had enough walking for one day, take a seat in a vintage car on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, which dates back to the early 20th century. The loop ride takes you through Eastern Pennsylvania’s rolling hills and woodlands in a diesel-powered train right out of another era. A local winery, bars and plenty of creative eats keep you in town long after the day’s attractions; stay overnight to make sure you have enough time to take in the charm.

Located in a corner of northeastern Pennsylvania that runs along the borders of both New York and New Jersey, the tiny town of Milford is an easy drive headed north from Philadelphia or New York City.

Overlooking a bend in the Delaware River, the town has become well known among spontaneous getaway seekers in recent years. Local dining, craft beverages and plenty of spots to take a seat and soak in the atmosphere have put Milford on the map as a quieter, closer alternative to New York’s Hudson Valley.

Laid out in a grid, the town is easy to walk, with most small businesses located along Hartford and Broad Streets. With a county museum, local hotels, gift shops and plenty of hiking minutes away, Milford is perfect for weekenders hoping to tune out.

Exploring Downtown York: A Weekend Itinerary (Brought to You by Downtown Inc)

Itinerary for York, Pennsylvania

This article is brought to you by Downtown Inc .

York County, Pennsylvania, is known as the Factory Tour Capital of the World, and visitors can tour everything from a Harley-Davidson factory to several snack food factories and even a violin workshop . However, for those that dig a little deeper, there’s a lot to explore.

One of the biggest surprises for me in the area was how much there is to do in Downtown York. While it’s often overlooked, the city offers fascinating history, great shopping, delicious restaurants, and half-a-dozen tasty breweries.

To assist you in exploring this overlooked city, I’ve put together a two-day itinerary that’s perfect for those looking to explore the best things to do in Downtown York.

Things to do in downtown York, Pennsylvania

(Note: While this itinerary might not work on every day of the week or during the colder months, it’s been designed to work for the majority of the year with an eye towards being done on a Saturday and Sunday. Check operating hours for the places listed prior to visiting.)

Agricultural and Industrial Museum

Start your visit off at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum in Downtown York. As the name implies, the museum covers the working history of the region.

The museum’s two floors feature nearly two dozen different displays on York County’s agricultural, industrial, and transportation history. Visitors can step inside a historic trolley, check out a working grist mill, and take a turn milking a pretend cow.

The ticket to the Agricultural and Industrial Museum is also good for access to the Historical Complex Tour and the York Historical Center which you’ll do later in the day.

Lunch: Central Market

Central Market in York, PA

York’s Central Market dates back 125 years and is filled with fantastic places to eat, grab a cup of coffee, or browse the crops and wares available for sale.

The variety of food available in the market makes it a perfect spot for lunch as the whole family can try something different. Food options include barbecue, fried chicken, and pretzels to more exotic fare like Korean, Mexican, and Greek.

York Colonial Complex

York County Courthouse in York PA

After lunch, head over to the York Colonial Complex for a tour. This guided tour offers a fascinating look into York’s nine-month stint as the capital of the United States. In fact, some consider York to be the country’s first capital.

Tours start with a look inside the Golden Plough Tavern. One of the first buildings built in the city, the tavern offers a glimpse into what life was like in mid-18th century York.

Inside the York County Courthouse in York, PA

Adjacent to the tavern is the General Horatio Gates House. Gates was one of the top commanders of the Continental Army and spent the winter of 1777-1778 in York. Visitors can tour the home that he lived in while in the area and learn more about his story. It is said that in this home, the Marquis de Lafayette saved George Washington’s role as the commander of the Continental Army during a party.

The tour also takes visitors into the recreated York County Courthouse that served as the meeting place for the Continental Congress from September 1777 to June 1778.

While the original courthouse, which sat in the middle of the town square, was torn down in the 1860s, it has been recreated for visitors to see and learn about the important events that happened in York.

York History Center

Downtown York Itinerary: York History Center

Next finish your historic tour of York with a visit to the Historical Society Museum . Operated by the York County History Center, the museum highlights the history of the city and county.

This is a great place to explore as it will give you a great appreciation for the region’s history. The museum’s two floors of exhibits cover the industries that thrived in York County, its Civil War history, and aspects of life in the region.

Also of interest is the recreated storefronts inside the museum. This is neat to see and contrast how things used to look like with what the streets of the city look like today.

Dinner: Tutoni’s

Tutoni's is great if you are looking for where to eat in York, PA

If you love Italian food, you won’t want to miss Tutoni’s . Tutoni’s prides themselves on making scratch Italian food, and they even make their own noodles and utilize many local farms in the creation of their delicious Italian dishes.

In addition to great pasta, Tutoni’s also features amazing cocktails inspired by Italian tastes. While not inexpensive, these cocktails are quite delicious and unique.

As for their deserts, Tutoni’s offers miniature desserts that are homemade daily and insanely delicious. While it’s the perfect size for an end-of-meal treat, you’ll definitely wish it was larger.

After Dinner

Capitol Theater in York, PA

If you are looking for a little entertainment after dinner, there are some great options in Downtown York.

During the summer months, head over to PeoplesBank Park, which is home to the York Revolution . A professional baseball team in the independent Atlantic League, the Revolution’s season lasts from late April through early September.

Another option is to catch a show at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts . This state-of-the-art venue hosts concerts, plays, and other performances from well-known artists and national touring acts.

Lastly, there are several great breweries in York, PA . While a few are on the itinerary for day two, other options worth checking out are Liquid Hero Brewery and Gift Horse Brewing .

Where to Stay in Downtown York

Currently, Downtown York’s historic hotel, The Yorktowne Hotel, is closed for renovations.

While that limits lodging options in Downtown York, one highly-recommended choice is Grace Manor Bed and Breakfast . While I haven’t personally had a chance to stay here yet, the reviews are quite complementary, and the rooms look very inviting.

The four rooms at the B&B are themed after a different culture and offer a unique lodging option within walking distance of the places listed in this itinerary.

Take a Ride on the Heritage Rail Trail

Start your day off with a bike ride or walk along the  York County Heritage Rail Trail . This 21-mile trail runs from downtown York to the Maryland border. Along the way, it passes through some of the area’s most beautiful spots.

If you have a bike, this is a great way to explore the city and a bit of the countryside. However, even if you don’t, the trail is perfect for a morning walk along the Codorus Creek.

Green Bean Roasting Company

After a little morning exercise, pop into Green Bean Roasting Company on South Beaver Street. Green Bean Roasting Company offers freshly roasted coffees in a great setting in the heart of downtown. If you don’t like coffee, they also offer a selection of teas, espresso drinks, and other specialties.

Lunch: Mudhook Brewing Company

Flight of beer at Mudhook Brewing Company in York, Pennsylvania

For lunch, head over to Mudhook Brewing Company . Even if you aren’t in the mood for an early drink, Mudhook is known for its delicious food and is a great place to grab a bite to eat.

It’s the perfect way to fuel up before a fun afternoon in Downtown York

Sunrise Soap Company

York, PA Itinerary: Sunrise Soaps Factory Tour

Sunrise Soap Company is a shop along North Beaver Street that produces some of the finest soaps in Pennsylvania. All of their soaps are made in-house, and visitors can even get an impromptu tour of their factory and facilities. Or, if you’re planning ahead, you can even sign up for one of their classes and make your own soap.

Either way, take some time to learn how soap is made at Sunrise Soap and then browse for a few gifts for your family (or for yourself).

York City Pretzel Company

Next, head over to the York City Pretzel Company to try a delicious homemade soft pretzel. This makes a great afternoon snack or after-lunch dessert. Their pretzels are hand twisted and made in small batches with simple ingredients. *Note: Please confirm before going as they may be closed to the public due to high commercial production.

Don’t forget to get some house-made beer cheese or mustard to go with your pretzel.

Redeux in York, PA

Redeux is part vintage shop and part art store and located in the heart of York’s artistic Royal Square District. It features an incredible collection of vintage items that are perfect for almost any collection or for your vintage-inspired decor. There are also many pieces of art that have been designed with the same trends in mind and offer a great addition to almost any space.

Take a bit of time to browse this great shop, and you’re sure to find something great to take home with you.

While The Parliament and many of the other art galleries in the Royal Square District near Redeux are closed on Sundays, they are definitely worth a look if you are completing this itinerary on another day of the week.

Drinks at Collusion Tap Works

Collusion Tape Works in downtown York, PA

Walk across the Royal Square District for a late afternoon drink at Collusion Tap Works . Opened in September 2016, Collusion Tap Works offers a rotating list of inventive and delicious beers in their taproom.

Prior to opening Collusion, their head brewer won awards at the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup for other beers he made, so you know the quality of the beers here are tasty.

Collusion’s large draft list changes regularly, but features a wide variety of beer styles. Their current line up can be found on their website.

Dinner: Taste Test

Taco at Taste Test in Downtown York, Pennsylvania

Taste Test is an audition kitchen that allows aspiring restauranteurs to try out their concepts before launching a full scale restaurant.

The space consists of a short term audition space and a full restaurant and bar. While both spaces are on rotation, the audition space turns over much more quickly, and what’s available on one trip likely won’t be there on the next.

During a recent visit, I had a chance to sample Paco’s Tacos, which was located in the restaurant and bar. For being a newer concept, I was impressed at the quality of the menu, and the taco that I tried was incredibly good. I also greatly enjoyed the cocktail that I had a chance to sample.

*Note: Taste Test kitchen is no longer at this location but the space has been replaced by other restaurants to try.

Timeline Arcade

Timeline Arcade in downtown York, Pennsylvania

End your time in downtown York at Timeline Arcade . A single hourly rate will give you access to dozens of their historic arcade games. No matter how far back your love of video games go, they will have something for you as Timeline has games dating back to the earliest days of arcades and even offer a few more modern games.

Whether you like strategy games, racing games, shooting games, or pinball, there are many great ways to spend a few hours in this great spot.

Even better, you can curl up on the couch and pop in a game on anything from an Atari to a Nintendo 64.

New Hope is one of the most romantic getaways in Pennsylvania.

Couples seeking a romantic getaway in Pennsylvania will find a unique array of options that span beyond (but still include) the Poconos, Philadelphia and Hershey. For instance, did you know you can have dinner by candlelight in a cave, or that you can spend the night in an International Dark Sky Park? You can also roam through a castle or two, sip craft beer in a church, and see a show at "America's Summer Theater."

You might be surprised to learn Pennsylvania has a few all-inclusive resorts, too, in addition to historic hotels, spa retreats and adults-only options (and sometimes, a combination of all of the above). There's no shortage of quaint bed-and-breakfasts, either, if you and your partner prefer something a bit more intimate. Read on to discover the most romantic getaways in Pennsylvania.

While Hershey is a popular family vacation destination , there are plenty of ways to find romance in "The Sweetest Place on Earth." Perhaps the best place to find it is The Hotel Hershey , the first hotel to open in the town Milton S. Hershey built around his namesake chocolate factory.

The Forbes Four Star and AAA Four Diamond award-winning resort is widely known for The Spa at The Hotel Hershey, where you can indulge in a chocolate-infused (or chocolate-less) spa treatment and a variety of spa amenities including indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas, and gourmet lunch and/or cocktails at The Oasis restaurant and lounge. After the spa, freshen up in your luxury guest room, suite or cottage before dinner at one of the on-site restaurants. End the evening with a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup martini by the fireplace at the cozy Iberian Lounge.

Guests of The Hotel Hershey enjoy complimentary access to Hershey Gardens (just steps from the hotel) and other exclusive perks. The hotel is also just a few minutes from top Hershey attractions including Hersheypark and Tröegs Independent Brewing, nationally known for its Mad Elf holiday ale.

The Inn at Westwynd Farm: Hummelstown

Just outside of Hershey is another romantic option: The Inn at Westwynd Farm. Located on a 32-acre equestrian farm, this quaint B&B offers rooms with fireplaces, jetted spa tubs, private balconies and private patios. Turn up the romance with the For My Special Love package, which includes sparkling wine, chocolate-covered strawberries, a dozen roses and a bed strewn with silk rose petals, or the Anniversary Celebration package with a personalized cake for you and your partner.

If you can bring yourself to leave the comfort of your room, you'll be treated to a hearty breakfast in the inn's restaurant, where the menu changes with the seasons. Outside, views of uninterrupted countryside will make you swoon. You can spend the day biking, hiking, horseback riding or simply strolling hand in hand. Previous guests praise everything about The Inn at Westwynd Farm, from the owners to the food.

Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa: Sharon

weekend trips from york pa

Courtesy of Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa

You don't have to fly to Europe to experience an overnight stay in a castle. Book a stay fit for royalty at the Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa instead. Frank Buhl, founder of the Sharon Steel Corporation (which he later sold to the United States Steel Corporation) had the castle built for his bride, Julia Forker, with construction finalized in 1896. After they both passed, ownership changed hands several times before the castle was ultimately abandoned. In 1996, it was purchased and restored to most of its original grandeur, reopening its doors the following year.

Today, all rooms offer fireplaces, Jacuzzi tubs, plush bathrobes and slippers, and minifridges for chilling wine and other treats. Each room also has its own story – you can stay in the late Mr. Buhl's room or the room that was often reserved for guests. Packages can include a welcome tray of goodies, breakfast, afternoon tea and Champagne receptions on Friday and Saturday evenings. Guests are encouraged to indulge in the on-site, full-service spa, where there's a sauna, a steam room and monsoon showers.

Address: 422 E. State St., Sharon, PA 16146

Omni Bedford Springs Resort: Bedford

weekend trips from york pa

The Omni Bedford Springs Resort has been attracting travelers – including famous clientele such as Presidents James Buchanan and Thomas Jefferson – for centuries, first to its healing mineral springs and later to its full-service hotel.

An award-winning property, The Omni Bedford Springs Resort maintains its reputation as a healing destination with the Springs Eternal Spa, where you can start with the Bedford Bath Ritual – a seven-step process including an aromatic steam and mineral deluge – before a spa treatment, such as a HydraFacial or a Himalayan salt stone massage. Afterward, cozy up in the lounge with fruit-infused water and tea or go for a swim in the indoor or outdoor pools. The outdoor pool, open seasonally, offers private cabanas for an additional fee.

Accommodations, which include guest rooms and four suites, are beautifully appointed. Some are also pet-friendly. Choose a room with a balcony and rocking chairs to take in the history and surroundings of the hotel.

When you get hungry, there are several on-site dining options available, with more to be found in the tiny town of Bedford. While you're in the area, make the roughly 25 mile drive to the Flight 93 Memorial National Park. This memorial honors the bravery of those who were killed when their plane was crashed during the Sept. 11 attacks.

Address: 2138 Business 220, Bedford, PA 15522

Annville Inn Bed & Breakfast: Annville

Though it's less than 10 miles from Hershey, the Annville Inn is a romantic destination on its own. Here, couples retreat to comfy guest rooms with fireplaces and countryside views, plus two-person Jacuzzi tubs in the English Manor Suite and Great Southwest Room. Mornings are extra special thanks to a sumptuous farm-to-table breakfast served by candlelight. Later in the day lovebirds can relax with a swim in the outdoor pool, soak in the hot tub, enjoy a therapeutic massage or stroll through the property's beautifully manicured gardens. Two-person hammocks are also available for quality time relaxing together, and several recent guests say this is the best B&B they've ever visited.

Address: 4515 Hill Church Road, Annville, PA 17003

You might be surprised to learn one of the best places to snuggle under a blanket and watch shooting stars is in Potter County, Pennsylvania. An International Dark Sky Park , Cherry Springs State Park offers a rare glimpse of constellations, meteor showers, occasionally the northern lights and more. Previous visitors say the views are surreal.

Cherry Springs State Park is perfect for couples who enjoy camping (or are willing to try it), with on-site accommodations limited to 30 non-electric campsites. While there are cabin rentals available nearby, camping is the best way to take in this essential Pennsylvania experience .

If you and your significant other are interested in Civil War history – and the spookiness that surrounds it – visit the Gettysburg National Military Park, Museum and Visitor Center (where you'll find the impressive Gettysburg Cyclorama) as well as the Shriver House Museum and the Jennie Wade House. Ghost tours and hunts of the battlefields and town are a popular activity in Gettysburg, with previous visitors reporting legitimate paranormal activity. The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest conflict of the Civil War, after all.

Even if you and your sweetheart don't consider yourselves history buffs, you'll find plenty of other reasons to visit Gettysburg . An array of cozy restaurants, boutique shops and historic B&Bs make Gettysburg one of the most romantic getaways in Pennsylvania. There are also several wineries and tasting rooms within easy reach, such as Mount Hope Estate & Winery's downtown Gettysburg tasting room, Buddy Boy Winery, and Reid's Winery Tasting Room and Cider House on Baltimore Street, all of which make for a lovely date night. If you like craft beer, head to Fourscore Beer Co., one of the top-rated breweries in Pennsylvania. And if you're willing to drive out of town, you may also want to check out Halbrendt Vineyard and Winery for its stunning vistas of the grapevines and the rolling hills beyond.

Where to stay: Opt for a stay at the Inn at Herr Ridge for an elegant fine dining experience and the option to add a date night basket full of goodies like wine, cheese and chocolate-covered strawberries to your stay. For views of the Gettysburg battlefields and Hunter Lake, cozy up in one of the rustic cabins at The Lodges at Gettysburg, which are adorned with antique furniture and feature down bedding, electric fireplaces and kitchenettes. This is a great option if you're traveling with several couples and want to explore the countryside. For more accommodation options, check out the best hotels in Gettysburg .

The European-style architecture and surrounding mountain peaks have led people to call Jim Thorpe the "Little Switzerland of Pennsylvania," and there's no shortage of charm in this small town nestled within the Pocono Mountains. Explore the Asa Packer Mansion – the Victorian home where Asa Packer, philanthropist and founder of Lehigh University, once lived – and have cocktails on the porch of the Harry Packer Mansion (owned by one of Asa's late sons), said to be the inspiration for Disney World's "Haunted Mansion." You can also catch a show at the Mauch Chunk Opera House or take a ride on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, where you can rent a private caboose for you and your loved one. The railway also operates bike trains for cyclists heading to Lehigh Gorge Rail-Trail, another popular activity here.

Where to stay: The accommodation options in Jim Thorpe are just as delightful as the town itself. The Inn at Jim Thorpe is a popular choice as it offers historic charm near the many shops and restaurants in the downtown area. Couples can enjoy meals at the cozy on-site Broadway Grille, as well as spa services.

Another popular inn is the Dolon House Bed & Breakfast, which is housed within a mansion from the 1800s. Stained-glass windows and mosaic floors entice visitors to stay, and the cozy guest rooms, which feature fireplaces and antique furniture, make it hard for them to leave. The small lodge also offers a dining room where you and your partner can mingle with other guests over dinner. What's more, the bed-and-breakfast earns rave reviews from frequent travelers for its attentive staff and impeccable decor.

If you and your beau like craft beer, it's time to go to Pittsburgh. The Steel City is home to some of Pennsylvania's top-rated breweries, including Dancing Gnome, Old Thunder Brewing and Brew Gentleman in nearby Braddock. Church Brew Works, which is – you guessed it – a brewery housed in a former church, is also a must-visit.

Aside from beer, Pittsburgh features one-of-a-kind attractions , from the Carnegie Museums (Natural History, Science and Art) to the Andy Warhol Museum and Randyland, which pay homage to the colorful art by the late Andy Warhol and Randy Gilson, respectively.. For panoramic views of the city, hike to the Mount Washington Overlook or, for a unique experience, ride the famous Duquesne Incline to the top. You can also take in your surroundings via a bike tour.

Where to stay: When it comes to lodging, Pittsburgh offers everything from luxury hotels like the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh – which offers free bicycle rentals and a nightly wine reception – to unique spots with historic charm like the Mansions on Fifth Hotel , where guests are treated to butler service and views of "Millionaires' Row." Check out the best hotels in Pittsburgh for more accommodation options.

Nemacolin: Farmington

Romantic weekend getaway at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania

Possibly the best-known romantic lodging option in Pennsylvania is Nemacolin . The Chateau at Nemacolin holds the main accommodations, and its elegant marble accents and crystal chandeliers are reminiscent of palatial royal hideaways. In addition to the main lodge, the property is home to the boutique Falling Rock hotel as well as an array of private home rentals on the premises. Couples staying at this famous resort can splurge on a memorable meal at the AAA Five Diamond Award-winning restaurant Lautrec, browse the on-site art gallery, tour the resort's wine cellar and meet the sommelier, indulge in luxury treatments at the spa, and even try their luck at the on-site casino.

If you can bring yourself to leave the resort, drive about 11 miles to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. One of the late architect's most celebrated creations, Fallingwater is a stunning home built partly over a waterfall. This lakeside city in Pennsylvania is full of outdoor adventures. As its name suggests, the city sits on the banks of Lake Erie, offering twosomes a beachlike getaway without traveling all the way to the coast.

The city is home to Presque Isle State Park, which encompasses 3,200 acres of shoreline and offers all the fun that comes with a beach vacation , including water sports rentals, fishing and picnic areas. Some tour boat companies, like Victorian Princess Cruise Line, offer sunset cruise options for another way to experience this Great Lake. You’ll also find lots of (mostly flat) hiking trails, but if you're looking for a more challenging trek, venture to spots like Devils Backbone, Dowd Hill, Mount Pleasant and Bicentennial Tower, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Erie and snap some unforgettable selfies.

There are quaint, casual restaurants scattered around the lakefront area in Erie. Some date night favorites include the classic Italian restaurant Mi Scuzi and Bayfront Grille for sunset views. The latter is connected to the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel , a great lodging option.

Where to stay: Aside from the Sheraton, you'll find other chain hotels, a few B&Bs and a variety of vacation rentals. Many couples also choose a romantic getaway in Ohio , where Lake Erie destinations include Sandusky, Put-in-Bay, Port Clinton and Kelleys Island.

weekend trips from york pa

Roughly 40 miles north of Philadelphia, couples can enjoy a getaway full of history amid bucolic scenery – including a castle – in Doylestown. Built in the 20th century, Fonthill Castle was designed by archaeologist and scholar Henry Chapman Mercer, who used it as both a residence and a place to showcase his valuable art collection, including his unique handcrafted tiles. The massive castle boasts 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces and more than 200 windows. While it's worth going inside the building on a guided tour, you can also admire some of the best views from the grounds, which include manicured gardens, ponds and mosaic bridges.

If you and your partner are intrigued by the history of the castle, venture into the on-site Moravian Pottery & Tile Works Museum, where handmade tiles are still produced (and available for purchase) using a similar method to the one Chapman used. More of Mercer's whimsical art collection is on display at the Mercer Museum downtown, across the street from another must-visit museum: the James Michener Art Museum.

You'll also find unique shops, art galleries, a preserved 20th-century movie theater and a diverse array of dining options downtown. Especially romantic is Honey, which serves tapas-style plates in a cozy atmosphere. Just outside of downtown, you can pick your own lavender (seasonally) and buy lavender soaps, candles and more at Peace Valley Lavender Farm. The farm overlooks Lake Galena, another lovely place to spend a morning or afternoon, whether you decide to get out on the water or just stroll by.

Where to stay: When you get tired, turn in at one of the area's romantic accommodation options. The Doylestown Inn offers jetted tubs and fireplaces in select rooms and is attached to the Hattery Stove & Still, which serves lunch, dinner and brunch in a setting that honors its former life as a hat factory, speakeasy and more.

About 75 miles southwest of the Big Apple, New Hope is a popular weekend getaway from New York City . This Delaware River town has long been a hub for artists, with quirky galleries, shops and the storied Bucks County Playhouse, nicknamed "America's Summer Theater," dotting its Main Street. As a diverse community, it's also a celebrated LGBTQ town, with LGBTQ-owned hotels, regular drag brunches at local restaurants and fun Pride Month events.

New Hope has experienced a renaissance in recent years, with romantic, riverfront additions including the boutique Ghost Light Inn and its farm-to-table restaurant, Stella, owned by Iron Chef and James Beard Award winner, Jose Garces; The River House at Odette's, with upscale dining and accommodations; and Ferry Market, featuring a variety of food vendors plus a tap room and wine bar. For more romantic rendezvous, head to Nektar Wine Bar for a glass of vino then to The Salt House for a meal illuminated mostly by candlelight and a log-burning fire.

Peddler's Village (in nearby Lahaska) is excellent for shopping and seasonal events, and Lambertville, reachable from New Hope via a pedestrian-friendly bridge, is one of the top romantic getaways in New Jersey . Courtesy of Discover Lancaster

The landscape and history of Amish Country draws visitors to the area, but there's more to love about Lancaster County – particularly for couples. Highlights include hot air balloon rides over the countryside; Lancaster Central Market, the country's oldest continually operating farmers market; Gallery Row, featuring local and national art; and pretzel making at the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery. An especially unique experience is historic Bube's Brewery in Mount Joy, where you can both imbibe and dine by candlelight underground.

Where to stay: For overnight accommodations in Lancaster , consider a stay at The Inn at Leola Village , an Amish tobacco farm-turned-luxury hotel featuring romantic packages and guest rooms with exposed wood beams and whirlpool tubs. There's also an on-site spa. Previous guests rave about the hotel and its proximity to downtown Lancaster.
