At my dk45se 50 hr service, I used Traveller Premium Universal Tractor Trans/Hydraulic Fluid. Lots of opinions on oils out there, so I thought I could add to the conversation my oil sample analysis from my 400hr service. Those numbers are great. In almost all cases well inside the average or expected. I had Blackstone run tests on my car's oil when it went out of warranty. First upped it from 5K miles to 7.5K. No problems. Then to 10K, oops, waited too long it was 11K. They said I could run to 14K. I stick with 10K though and I always use Mobil-1.

I agree with the others: Thanks for posting this! Travelers Premium Hydraulic Fluid is what I've been using in my Kioti, so it's good to know that it performed well in your tractor. I'm due for a hydraulic oil change this winter, and that's what I'll use.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES IN GEAR OIL SPECS

GL-4, GL-5, FD1, TO-4. You’ve probably seen these gear oil specifications in equipment maintenance and lubrication manuals for years, but do you know what they all mean? All of these letters and numbers can get confusing. Is it really necessary to know what each of these specifications means? And can’t you just use any of them in a gear set? They’re all gear oils, right?

Well, yes, they are all gear lubricants, but no, you can’t just use them interchangeably. Axles, differentials, final drives and other gear sets used in mobile equipment applications all require specific lubricants designed for the heavy loads and the sliding and rolling forces associated with the operation of gears.

All gear lubricants are definitely not the same. There are differences in the additive technology used for lubricants for each specification, and just because one type of gear oil works well for one type of gear application, that doesn’t mean it will work well for all.

Different industry associations and different equipment manufacturers issue unique specifications. Most of the time, these specifications are not interchangeable. Substitutions of one type of gear oil for another can sometimes be done, but these substitutions can be tricky and you should use the guidance of a lubrication specialist to help you make the right decision.

For these reasons, it is important for equipment owners, operators and lubrication technicians to identify which specification is recommended by the equipment manufacturer for each machine and each gear set to ensure that the correct lubricant is being used.

The following are some of the most common gear lubricant specifications and their intended applications:

API GL-4 – Intended for gear sets with light to heavy load and sliding forces. GL-4 lubricants are often used in syncromesh manual shift on-road and off-road truck transmissions.

API GL-5 – Intended for heavily loaded gear sets with high sliding forces such as hypoid differentials. GL-5 lubricants contain high levels of extreme-pressure additives to provide protection under boundary lubrication conditions. Common heavy duty applications include differentials in on-road and off-road trucks, differentials, final drives in Caterpillar scrapers, and differentials and planetaries in Euclid haul trucks. Some manual-shift transmissions can use GL-5, but typically should not be used in synchromesh-type transmissions, as the EP additives can be corrosive to yellow metals found in those transmission types. Limited-slip differentials also typically require a specific lubricant with a limited-slip additive.

Cat FD-1 – Intended for final drives and axles in Caterpillar equipment types that do not contain friction materials (i.e. wet brakes). A Cat FD-1 SAE 50 or SAE 60 mineral oil-based product permits a 4,000-hour drain interval and an 80W-140 multigrade synthetic or part-synthetic product permits up to a 6,000-hour drain interval – if the operator is utilizing a used oil analysis program, such as Castrol Labcheck. Common applications include final drives in crawler dozers, as well as differentials, final drives and front wheel bearings in Cat off-road haul trucks.

Cat TO-4 – The SAE 50 and SAE 60 grades can be used in final drives and axles with a 2,000-hour drain interval. Common applications are differentials, final drives and planetaries in Caterpillar wheel loaders, wheel dozers, excavators, and landfill compactors.  TO-4 fluids are also used in transmissions and hydraulics in some machines in lower-viscosity grades.

Universal Tractor Fluids – This category goes by many specifications, such as John Deere J20C, Volvo WB-101, Case (IH) Hy-tran, Ford M2C-134A  (and others), and is intended for axles and differentials in certain equipment that contain wet brakes. These fluids contain friction modifiers to reduce chatter in wet brakes, but should not be used in equipment that is designed for TO-4 fluids, as the friction modifiers that are used may negatively affect braking performance. Universal Tractor Fluids are also used in transmissions and hydraulics in many brands of equipment.

SAE 50 Engine Oil – While not strictly a “gear oil,” this type of lubricant is often the recommended lubricant for some manual-shift truck transmissions.

This article is not intended to provide a complete recommendation of all possible applications for these fluids or for all gear sets. It does provide a quick guide to help clarify the differences in these fluid types and to make users aware that these products are not interchangeable. Please be aware that using the wrong product type can result in poor performance and accelerated wear, as there are no universal fluids that are applicable to all mobile equipment gear sets.

Who makes Traveller oil (sold at Tractor Supply). I did some searching, but couldn't find a definite answer. I heard shell, which i doubted, and then I heard Old World Industries, who also make peak anti-freeze. Traveller Premium 15w40 is rated up to CI-4. I've also read that CI-4 is better for pre-'07 trucks than CJ-4. This being due to CJ-4 lacking additives that don't play well with new emissions equipment. I think it's priced the same as Shell Rotella T, which I currently use, but I'm just curious. Any thoughts?

As long as it meets CI-4 or CJ-4 it should be fie for using in your Cummins.  

found it , A: According to the API service classification, these products meet or exceed the performance requirements for API Service CI-4/SL. The "SL" classification indicates these engine oils can be used in gasoline engines. But remember: Always refer to the automobile's Owner's Manual for the preferred SAE grade.  

ive thought about using travelers but never have... a lot of people on here say the Valvoline is the best... idk i always figured oil was oil  

I use Valvoline blue conventional and it seems fine. I have used Rotella and Delo before and they presented no problems either. The oil distributor who came by my old job told me that Delo had the highest zinc content, but that was several years ago, and formulations can change. I think that any of the name brand oils are a fine bet. As for Travellers, I am currently running their UTF in my old Case backhoe, but i haven't had it all that long, so I cant comment on its overall longevity, and I have not tried their engine oil. We generally get supplied with Warren oils at work, and all I can tell you is that they work ok for fleet service, but I'm sure its the cheapest they can get, as vehicle service isn't the biggest concern for the higher ups.  

Lets face it fellas, these 5.9 engines are *tough*. To think they really care much about the oil in the crankcase is probably just bench-racing. Is it slippery? Is it clean? Okay, we're good. As long as it's diesel rated (so it captures the soot), I really don't care what brand/type/weight you put in it. Chances are, it'll run a half million miles or more without issues. And when it does have issues, it's not going to be because of an oiling issue (unless you run the crankcase dry - but that's your fault). I run expensive Mobil 1 5w-40 in mine. I'm a Mobil 1 guy, and I like to go 15,000-20,000 between oil changes. Mobil 1 does that just fine. But to really think that Delo, or Rotella, or Warren, or TSC oils is gonna make a difference - - well, I think the millions of these engines in fleet service where minimum attention and the cheapest possible would indicate they really don't care.  

What about the Super Tech walmart brand 15w-40? That stuff is cheap and so are the filters. Wouldn't be a bad thing to flush the engine out with a couple gallons.  

As far as I know it was PennzOil last time I checked and don't see any problem with that.  

These engine's are tuff the first Cummins I owned was a 95 12 v bought from a buddy of mine. I went to pick it up about three hours from my house and the guy said it was all good to go so I just hopped in and left. I drove ut home and atound town and stuff then I took it too a mechanic to have it looked out, the front cover was cracked and there was bo oil in the motor. Traveller's oil from TSC

How many if any use Traveller oil form TSC ? Anyone know who make's it ? They have "30w Diesel" and "Heavy Duty 30w" whats the differents ? With all these small engine's it would be easy to just buy a 2 gal jug, if it's any good.  

I've used traveller gear oil in the past with no problems at all in the axles of my 4x4 trucks.  

I use the 15W40 in everything. Cummins, Powerstroke, Kohler, Wisconsin and Tecumseh. They all seem to like it and I like the $35 price tag for 5 gallons.  

Rodney, How long have you been using it? The $35.00 price tag could change a few people over if it meets the engine mfgs requirements. PJ

Rotella T here goes for 11+ bucks PER gallon,if Walmart sells 5 gallons for that,I'm on my way to clean out the shelves!...I do see 2 gallon jugs of 15W-40 and SAE 30 "Tech 2000" oil for about 15-18 bucks there sometimes--it used to be 8 bucks till a year or two ago!.. I have to change the oil in my diesel pickup,been thinking about going for a 5 gallon pail instead of gallons or quarts--I can get Wolf Head semi-synthetic 15W-40 for about 38 bucks at a local trucking supply parts store...sometimes they have Amalie regular 15W-40 for 30 bucks per 5 gallon pail on sale too.. Small Fry,"Diesel" rated oil with a "CC-CD" rating has more detergent than regular oil,to keep soot particles in suspention in the oil and keep the "dirtier" diesel engine cleaner..its excellent for all gas engines too,providing they aren't sludged up old ones that had non detergent 30W used in them forever,the diesel oil will loosen the sludge up and cause headaches..  

I have used it for six years no problems,i worked at a small eng shop for two years and thats all he used good oil and good price.

anyone know who's oil that actually is?

Friend on mine was picking up a tractor trailer load of oil at a packaging facility one time and said they were bottling rotella, and then walmart tech 2000 jugs started coming down the line and got filled with the exact same oil.

That sort of thing is always a big secret, I have been told who makes it, gotta double check on that, but I knew at one point.... I guess this was a useless post sorry.

Just because the oil comes down the same line does not mean it is the same oil. Each type of oil starts with the same basic oil stock. What makes the brands different is the additives that are used.

Just like gas that gets put in tankers and sent to your local gas station. They don't have separate pipelines for everybody's different gas...but the fuel is different when it comes out of the pump and into your car.

I know I'm going to open up a big can of worms here....I have been told by a reliable source about Rotella oil that is sold at Walmart is a different formula then sold at other places

OT, but A LOT of beers are the same brew with different labels.

I worked at at a pasta plant years ago and it was very common for us to run out of boxes for the high dollar name brand packaging and just switch over to the generic brands or vice versa. THe actual mix for the pasta never changed being from start to finish once the pasta left the presses it could take 4 - 12+ hours to reach the other end of the dryers where it went into the packaging which in itself could change a dozen times a day. .

I worked for a canning company during the summers while I was in college. Once when i was in the labeling warehouse they were busy opening cases of cans of corn, removing the labels and running the cans back through the labeling line to get different labels. They had sold a few semi loads to a different company and had run out of unlabeled case of cans.

From what I've been told about other things WM sells from people I have complete trust in, I don't doubt that one bit.

My wife was a factory Rep. for a mattress manufactor for many years and she always told me of the de-spec's for major box stores and the like just to achieve their private co-label & cheaper prices.

I have purchased farm chemicals that were craftly de-spec'ed for cheaper prices and said to be identical but they were not. WE did plots and proved it not to be.

this is a very good point. home depot power tools are NOT the same as you get at your local lumber yard or quality tool supplier. i cant imagine why oil, filters, mattresses, lawn tractors whatever would be any different. and as Tony says, you get what you pay for.

Maybe Walmart would sell a lesser grade. But would seem strange if the Rotella brand would put a different oil in a Rotella branded container. They should know that sooner or later somebody would test the oils and if one was a lesser grade that would be a black eye in the news for the rotella brand. Dave

Maybe the Wal-mart branded Diesel oil, is made by Shell, and the Shell branded Rotella T, is genuine Shell Rotella T.

I do know that when I worked in the Shell refinery at Wood River, IL, in 1986-87, I saw the line where Shell filled its own containers, from one-quart cans, to 55 gallon drums.

did they fill containers for other companies Art? I met a guy who worked for a refinery in nw pa, he could not say who they were packaging for, but did say if you were up there you could see a lot of different brands leaving that one plant.

I cannot say for certain, the drums may have had the labels added later, and the cans were moving by so fast (that is what impressed me), that you could not read the lables.

However, I would imagine that they would do different runs, if they had contracts with different OEM companies, like IH, JD, TSC, and the like.

What I have observed however, is that the company I have worked for, has never put any emphasis, on what brand of oils they use. Even different camps within a division would have different brands of oil. The yard here in Brighton, and undoubtedly those in the US and Canada, now use contractors for oil and fluid changes on the equipment. The Light duty vehicles are taken either to a dealer, or Grease Monkey (which I avoid as they even try to 'upsell' on us), and the service manager at the Ford dealership that does most of the PM and repair on our Ford vehicles says that the fuel and air filters they use, are of a lesser quality than genuine Ford.
